It had been a long time since you had needed comfort in the middle of the night like this, normally you could make it through without having to seek comfort from your best friend. You had bolted upright mere seconds ago, breath racing and heart pounding at some stupid nightmare that had changed from watching people in your own squadron pass away, unable to save them to those people, those faces now being that of your best friend and new boyfriend, Schneider. You reached out for your phone and flicked a quick message to him, an SOS, knowing that he would be here for you in a matter of minutes, especially as you felt the silent tears fall down your cheeks. Schneider had been staying over more frequently lately but on the nights when you had an early shift at the clinic he wouldn’t so that you didn’t have to drag yourself away from your comfort. There’s a gentle knock on your door and you whisper “Come in” before you see the tall frame of your comfort and solitary make his way through the door and over to you on the bed. As the bed dips, you crawl over to his lap and his arms immediately wrap themselves around you, gentle, soothing.

“My sweet Pen” he breathes against your forehead as he presses a kiss to your forehead and you can’t help but run your hands along every available inch of his body that you can reach, remembering the nightmare that you’d woken from. He stills your hands, gently holding them in his grip and placing a gentle kiss on each of them as he looks down at your face and asks

“Nightmare?” a strangled sob escaping from your lips as you manage to nod your head in agreement.

“What was it Pen? Was it your mum? The kids?” he asks and you shake your head finally looking up to meet his gaze as you whisper

“You” and you feel him pull you closer to him, a gentle kiss placed on the top of your head as he begins to lay down, and you snuggle even closer. Not wanting to let him escape you for even the slightest amount of time.

“It’s okay Pen, I’m right here” he whispers to reassure you finally kissing you on the lips, a kiss you gladly accept and hum into. Eventually you manage to fall asleep in his arms safe and content knowing that he’s got you.

You had just made your way out to the kitchen, it was the first night in weeks that you had spent alone after you and Schneider had gotten together, you spent most nights up in the loft in his very comfortable bed, wrapped up in his very comforting embrace. But when the two of you had got in to a small little fight earlier this morning about financials and how you were going to be able to afford to help support your daughter whilst she went to Yale and support your son with his baseball now that he was in the a-league team and from their it managed to snowball out of control. You had left the loft and gone to work, returning to the apartment only to find Schneider talking to your mother.

“Schneider what are you doing here?” you ask your boyfriend hesitantly and you can see your mother is about to stand up for the man but he holds up his hand and says

“I wanted to apologise to you, you didn’t deserve any of this and I felt horrible all day” he says as he makes his way over to you, holding out a small bouquet of flowers in front of you and you give him a small smile as you say

“I felt horrible all day too, I shouldn’t of reacted the way I did Schneider, you were only trying to help. Do more of what you’ve been doing for years. I guess I was just so hesitant to accept the help” you admit as you step into his waiting arms

“It’s okay Pen, I can stay the night y’know, if that’d make you feel better” he says cheekily and you chuckle before you place a kiss on his cheek

“I would like that very much Schneider” you whisper.
