I enjoyed so much writing this gruff, older guy who falls into a lot of masculinity tropes but then subverts so many at the same time (especially for an alpha).

I love how receptive he is to Aodhan, and how much he cares about Braden having access to support and friends. You know that Coll would run a solid pack, just through the way he cares about everyone. But also, I do think he thinks the nails are genuinely cute and he's not just saying it to be nice.

I don't think anything intimidates him aesthetically no matter how femme it looks. He's a dude who would be all kinds of impressed if Braden was in a dress or in jeans, because clothes are clothes, accessories are accessories, and while he has his own personal taste, he's open to admiring everyone else's too :D

Patch Cipriano (Friend): Patch was the first to invite him out socially when he got to Chicago. He was also really welcoming to Ada and organized a night out when she first joined as well.

Darren Shaw (Acquaintance): Darren has been in charge of a few scenes that Monty has worked as a beat cop. They haven’t spoken much outside of that, but they are friendly.

Churchill Darling (Ada’s friend): Church is more of Ada’s friend than his own, but he’s grateful that he has become close to her. A part of him worried that Ada would want to leave when she first got here, but the pack has made huge strides in helping her feel accepted.

Judson Cleirigh (Customer of his shop): Monty purchased some potions from Judson when he first got into Chicago to impress Roland. He still has them laying around in his room.

Simon Brodeur (Victim’s Family): Monty was one of the first people of the scene of Lilah Reddy. It was truly a disgusting crime scene, but Simon’s reaction to his death made a lasting impact on Monty. He has since made an effort to keep the nimble updated when he can on the case.

Douglas Gish (Boss): Douglas is his boss at the station, but has been a friend outside of work. He was the first person to invite Monty out for a drink and he felt immediately welcomed by him.

Winston Abioye (Coworker): Winston is the homicide detective attached to Lilah’s case. He has been very willing to allow Monty into the investigation, and his work and dedication to the case has inspired Monty to continue to rise in the ranks.

Greta Bow (Friend): Ada met Greta while working as a crime scene technician. They get along really well, and Monty finds the slightly awkward human shifter very endearing.

Hostile Connections:

Roland Blanchett (Hates): Roland made him trudge around the world and back again on a meaningless, unending scavenger hunt. He is slowly realizing that he will never have Roland’s approval and it’s up to him and Ada to create their own happiness away from Australia.

Imani Colt (Former customer of hers): Monty bought a wolf shifter pelt in New York from her. There is no way she could know the faces he uses primarily in Chicago, but he has made a habit of avoiding her and other Andersons to be on the safe side.

Angel Landyn (Dislikes): Angel repeatedly hit on Ada after she had told him to stop. He’s not sure why he’s doing it, whether it’s to get attention or a rise out of either of them. The minute he does it in front of Monty, he’ll see who he’s really playing with, that is unless Ada hits him first.

→ History Monty thinks his life didn’t really begin until he met the Blanchett’s and their clan. His parents were travelers, scavengers who didn’t care much about their status in the Human Shifter world. He joined the Melbourne pack to get ahead in life and wound up with something else entirely. During his second week there Monty fell hard for Adelaide Blanchett. She was brilliant, kind, and would talk to anyone, including him. They clicked and Ada began teaching him other ways to create and build faces. They fell in love over the span of a few years, until Roland Blanchett found out about them.

He said Monty needed to prove his worth to the clan before he could be with Ada. Monty was to bring back something worthy of Adelaide’s hand in marriage, and something Roland would be impressed by. On his first trip he went to Sydney and brought back gold for him. Roland scoffed and asked if that was what he thought Ada was worth. Monty was at a loss and left again that night for Perth. He brought back suitcases of money after stealing a face and robbing a bank. Again he was laughed out of the room. This went on for 20 years. He’d come back with jewels, wine, food, and art from all across Europe, Asia and Africa. Nothing was ever enough for the pack. It took him two decades before he realized he needed something more, something that a human couldn't bring to him. So he set off to the US. He knew the biggest hubs were in New York and LA and that the most notable witches and warlock had ditched the old country centuries ago.

In New York, Monty bought a wolf shifter skin from Imani Colt. Ada’s dad had trouble with the local pack of wolf shifters and he knew Roland would find it a good decorative piece. Instead, he turned his nose up, saying anyone with a sharp knife could drop a dead animal at his feet. He went back to the US and traveled along the West coast, but what he found was nearly every city’s supernatural population shriveled up or gone. He was able to purchase a few centuries old books to give to Roland, but realized they wouldn't impress. Which is when he started towards Chicago. The Cleirigh family were well known for the best potions and charms that money could buy. He figured he’d work and try to purchase as many unique and useful potions over a year that he could and bring them back.

When Monty arrived in Chicago he was surprised by the heavily established pack. They were organized, social with many of the fellow species and were even trusted as the law enforcers. He had never seen such trust towards human shifters in all of his travels and experiences. He kept his head low, but Vincent approached him before the end of his first week. Monty kept up the facade he’d carefully crafted around the Blanchett pack, waiting for them to test him the way he was with his pack. But it never came. Monty began to loosen up around them, and eventually even admitted to Sirius why he was there. Chicago was good, the people in his pack were actually kind and Monty found the only thing missing was Adelaide.

Somehow fate, or Ada technically, agreed and she showed up in the Windy City a few months later. Monty thought he was in a dream the first month she was here, but when he was sure he wasn’t dreaming he began settling down. He applied to the Police Academy while Ada got a job working as a crime scene tech. They finally got what they had been working towards for over 20 years.

→ The Present Monty is worried about Roland coming to find Ada. Though he never stated where he was going next, he knows Roland’s reach and how angry he must be at Adelaide for leaving. He has been increasingly suspicious of new coming supernatural creatures, fearing they are spies. This has become challenging with his day job, and he is aware Vincent is keeping a close eye on him again. He really likes it in Chicago and is worried they’ll have to run sooner rather than later. He’s worried about bringing this to Sirius, as he knows it looks like he doesn’t trust him or the strength of the Chicago pack.

Outside of his own personal drama, Monty has gotten very dedicated to a case. Lilah Reddy’s murder has now but all faded into the background for most people, but it has preoccupied Monty’s mind since that very night. He’s hired hunters and paid for skins, but this is the first time he’s seeing the repercussions to it. Monty is hoping to help solve this in an effort to right his past wrongs. He has been trying to keep Lilah’s fiance in the know and updated on the little he and Winston have found. Monty is also considering using on of his burned faces to talk to Imani Colt again and see if she has any information on it.

Dreamwidth update: The Gentle Wolf

So, disclaimer: not only did I read this book for free but I'm dating the author. BUT I CAN OBJECTIVELY SAY IT'S REALLY GOOD AND YOU SHOULD BUY IT My reaction to Pia while reading was "these two traumatised repressed self sacrificing workaholics are trying so hard and they need to kiss" And then they did and it was amazing :D It's a m/m romance, set in an alternate Perth where a small proportion of the population are 'shifters': able to turn into wolves, with omegaverse-y biology where asides from regular gender there's also being alpha, omega or beta. I'm usually not super into omegaverse, but Pia writes it in a really interesting way, with believable worldbuilding(*), and they complicate biological imperatives without undermining the things that make the tropes fun. The other thing this story explores thoughtfully is trauma, I can't think of a hurt-comforty romance about two people helping each other through their respective traumas that I've connected with more. But also it's just a really nice romance about two really likeable but complex characters who I ended up shipping SUPER hard by the end: demisexual omega chocolatier Aodhan, and his quiet regular customer, the beta Thomas, who RUNS A LITTLE MUSEUM :D As a former museum science communicator, those parts were super cute and believable. The parts about being from a family of fucked up activists was believable and wrenching. And while I can't judge the chocolatier parts from personal experience, they certainly made me hungry, and Pia's love for Perth's bush shines through just as much as in the previous book. (This is a sequel to the previous Perth Shifters book, Blackwood, but you don't need to read that to understand this one, and the dynamics are pretty different) SO YEAH. GO PRE-ORDER IT. Hi Pia! I just reread The Gentle Wolf and was reminded how much I love that universe and how interesting Hunter's story was to me. I know you were really disappointed with how it performed which means the odds of getting another book in that format are slim to none, but is there a chance we might get it in a patreon serial one day? I would love to see what Hunter's happy ending is like! 🥰

Okay but! I'm so so glad you enjoyed the universe, and tbh, I haven't abandoned Hunter's story, it's more like on very long hiatus. I always wanted to write Hunter's story most of all, so he's definitely not forgotten!

It would definitely be a serial first, I think, and probably break a bit from the previous books tbh which were designed to be more broadly appealing (which I'm very bad at, because it's like a cardinal sin to dare and have ace representation in an MC in a romance, lol).

I have no actual plans in my schedule to write Hunter's story, but I wouldn't consider the story abandoned either. But it also means I can't give you any kind of ETA on when it would start, unfortunately. It doesn't help that I'm writing a more 'ideal' kind of omegaverse for me in the Underline series, which I enjoy more because it's more overtly darker and crunchier in its themes.

If I don't write Hunter in the Perth Shifters verse, I might drag him into the Underline universe one day. We'll see! :D

Worlds Intertwined

There are thousands of worlds throughout the universe. Fortunately, Tales of Mysdrym only deals with three of them.

Chaos The oldest world, it is a place of constant change and uncertainty, shirking off the laws that other worlds adhere to, including physics.

Order A place where everything must be balanced. If there is night, there is day. If there is light, there is darkness. Nothing can exist without a counter, and its inhabitants understand and respect this, revering their three gods who made them, ever in balance.

Originally, the World of Order was synonomous with Mysdrym. However, due to tragic events some four thousand years ago, the world has since split into three countries: Mysdrym in the northeast, Achieven to the west, and Kyvrell to the south.

Other-world In Mysdrian legends, this land is known only as a place of neutrality and science, a world where magick is nonexistent. We know this world as Earth.

The Races

Each world lays claim to its own sentient species. While not all of them appear in Tales of Mysdrym: Ancients Stir, here is a quick run down.

The Other-World Humans - quick learning creatures which have a decent aptitude for magick, able to tap into the surrounding pockets of the ethereal to use whatever is at hand.

The World of Order Drians - sharing many traits with humans, the one noticeable difference seems to be their connection to magick. They may only ever draw upon one element effectively. This is based upon the affinity they are born with and cannot be changed. Rhaek - a ratlike people, they appear to be made from the earth itself and have a deep connection with it. They rarely leave their mountain home. Demons - mysterious creatures who have an uncanny connection to the elements, they are dangerous monsters who nearly brought the World of Order to its destruction before disappearing just as abruptly as they'd appeared, almost four thousand years ago. They are rumored to have been similar to the daem.

The World of Chaos Daem - the oldest race of any of the worlds, the daem are said to be terribly powerful creatures, in tune with the elements on such a level that they can manipulate them as easily as they breathe. However, despite their power, they are very reclusive, rarely leaving their northern homes. Many drians consider them more the monsters of fairytales and bedtime stories than a real threat. Trey - the ancient guardians who watch over all the worlds, the trey are elemental spirits who are said to be more magick than actual living being. The fall into five sects: orr, emm, illur, syphon, and cahr. No trey of any type has been seen in the last thousand years. Fae - fairylike healers, the fae are rumored to consume souls to fuel their magick. Whatever their source, their ability to mend bones and other wounds is unprecedented. They have withdrawn from the World of Order, back into Chaos. Faedre - spiderlike creatures, they sometimes hoard souls of those who were moving on to their next life, in hopes of luring fae into their webs. Like the daem, they are very rarely seen in the World of Order. Graymists - batlike weavers of magick, they are rumored to be second only to the daem in magickal aptitude. However, while they once flew through the sky delivering messages and teaching drians of magick, they have not been seen in Order for almost four thousand years. Some wonder if they ever truly existed at all. Shifters - able to shift their form into anything of their choosing, the youngest race of Chaos is also the most volatile. They have plagued Order's southern border since the world's creation. Of all sentient species, they alone cannot weave even the simplest of spells.

The Characters

In Mysdrym's lore, people from a fabled Other-world appear in times of distaster and help to save the day through unconventional means. Past other-worlders in Mysdrym are rumored to have been architects and lawyers, among others.

Ella Wallen [x] A young woman who strives to keep her ambitions and expectations for her future practical, Ella cannot deny her secret love for magick. If only it were real. She has a fondness for fire and the imaginary, though she's ready to step up and be an adult as time marches her onward.

Nicole Hedgeway [x] Ever the dreamer, Nicole accepts magick's existence as a truth that doesn't need to be proved. To her, it's already echoed so strongly in her head that it might as well wind its way through the world she finds herself trapped in.

Samantha Hedgeway [x] Nicole's cousin, Samantha has a fiery temper and a strong desire to look after those she loves. She's content with her life, minus her increasingly frequent arguments with Nicole.

Zachary Hiyuzaki [x] Generally the buffer of the group, Zachary is an artist. While he's typically laid back, he won't hesitate to defend his loved ones. While he has always wanted some kind of adventure to inspire him, he's also happy enough with his life.

Weslyn Kagris [x] Rather than hailing from the Other-world, Weslyn is from Mysdrym's southern, hostile neighbor, Kyvrell. After throwing his lot in with the man who killed Mysdrym's ruler, he has found himself entrenched in Mysdrym's politics and is practically running the country himself.

Other Characters

Bhaevin [x] A noble from Mysdrym who seeks to unravel the mysteries behind what led to the coup of her country. 

Shai [x] The young grace’s older half-brother, a fiercely dedicated young man who wants to see his world restored to order, as it should be.

Lord Sehnswrift [x] The noble who staged a coup, killing the High Grace of Mysdrym and taking over the country, though his actions seem confusing at best. 

Ser Nadrynne [x] A fae who has come to assist in the fight against the demons. 

Jaq [x] A grave keeper who appears exactly as Mryskael should.

The Trey Orr of the Lovrei [x] An ancient guardian who lives in the caverns beneath a deep wood.

Vesper [x] The lord of the demons who rallied the monsters together to attack the World of Order 4000 years ago.

Kivane [x] One of the most brutal demons to ever walk the world, the Earth Demon is still greatly feared in Achieven and Kyvrell, even if Mysdrym has forgotten much of the horrors from the Demons’ War.

Marra [x] The Light Demon and demon lord’s mistress, she was another brutal beast who planned out some of the most deplorable attacks in Ordraic history.

The Cahrick [x] A cruel creature who worked under the demon lord during the Demons’ War, bastardizing a beloved and sacred system. 

The Time Demon [x] Little is known of this creature. Even its name is debated, as it showed up near the end of the Demons’ War only to be defeated and sealed away quickly. 

The Death Demon [x] Little is known of this demon, other than he assisted in some of the more horrific attacks during the Demons’ War. 

Hailel [x] A Life Demon who was loyal to Vesper during the Demons’ War.

Gryst [x] A lesser Earth Demon who followed Vesper.

Perth [x] A Wind Demon who followed Vesper.

Lithenial Wraithemn [x] An accomplished historian from Achieven, whose family has spent many, many years recording the events of the past so that the future might not make the same mistakes. 

Mysdrym Drabbles

Chocolate - Zach, Nik, and Sam all adjust to being heroes differently. The Beach - Nik’s had a weird childhood. Lie - Weslyn tries to reason with their resident fae. What Do You Fear? - Samantha Hedgeway is confronted with how much things will change for her and her group with high school ending.  A Moment of Weakness - lame title, Sam sees Weslyn crying and worries a bit.

Japanese Film Festival 2019 Program Lands Across Aus

“We can’t wait to see what next year has in store for Japanese cinema!”

The Japanese Film Festival, boasting one-off screenings and Festival showings throughout the country, will soon enjoy week-plus runs in Sydney and Melbourne. With the stretches boasting a wide selection of Japanese cinema, segments of which have already or will soon play in different cities including Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, the Festival’s Anna Lee sat down to chat the marquee program and all things JFF 2019.

“I believe there are a number of recent trends in Japanese cinema that you can see reflected in this year’s Festival program,” said Lee. “Female directors are gaining more and more visibility in Japan, and we have the honour of having ‘Blue Hour’ director Yuko Hakota as a guest in Sydney for a Q&A.”

“’Blue Hour’ is her first feature film, and Hakota has already won a number of awards, including Shanghai International Film Festival’s Asian New Talent Award for Best Director. Along with this, we’re also seeing stories that aren’t often given a chance in the spotlight taking centre stage in this year’s film selection, such as ‘My Father, the Bride’ (directed by Momoko Fukuda), which features a girl struggling with accepting the fact that her father wants to marry a man and become a bride.”

This year’s JFF features a mix of comedy, live-action, dramas and period films, including ‘Samurai Shifters’ where bookish Samurai Katagiri has to convince his entire town to Marie Kondo and relocate across the water on a very tight budget. #JFF2019 will also host a number of animations; long a staple of the Festival.

“Japan is certainly known for its animated feature films, and for JFF we focus on selecting films that an Australian audience would likely not get a chance to see in cinemas otherwise,” said Lee. “The widespread success of the Japanese animated film ‘Your Name’ (2016) also increased interest in Japanese animation and film at an international level; boosting revenue for feature films in Japan in the years since.”

“’Ride Your Wave’ and ‘Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire’ are both related to films that screened as part of JFF 2018. ‘Ride Your Wave’ is ‘Night is Short, Walk on Girl’ Director Masaaki Yuasa’s latest film, while ‘Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire’ is the 23rd feature film in the Detective Conan series… it is the first Detective Conan film to be directed by a woman, Tomoka Nagaoka, and also the first in the series to be set outside of Japan, with Conan’s latest mystery taking him all the way to Singapore…‘Ride Your Wave’ features Masaaki Yuasa’s signature vivid animation style in a slightly less psychedelic narrative compared to his previous works; he’s known for never really doing the same thing twice.”

Okay let's talk omegaverse and dystopian tropes!

As for the justification: male omegas, because they can't get pregnant, are generally more useful as trophy husbands. Like alphas generally have a biological drive to mate with omegas, most will end up with one, so the idea is to make them as polite and sweet and passive as possible. Many already are those things, but omegas that have been abused can become repressed, or too scared, or 'abnormal' in other ways and in upper class society can end up in rehabilitation centres (most of which just break them so they're at least passive - Hillview aims for something a bit better than that).

In lower class society many male omegas end up working in prostitution, or just end up with an abusive husband and it doesn't matter what they're like or how they're treated. Most are claimed young and have no option to escape their relationship.

It's really common as a trope in a lot of omegaverse content that omegas are generally second-class citizens. They don't have the same rights to jobs, driver's licences, or universities sometimes. They're not allowed to become doctors or other high responsibility jobs. (This is often blamed on the fact that they go into heat on a semi-regular basis (which stereotypically causes them to lose the ability to consent, and they will be fucked by an alpha near them, because they're desperate to be knotted to calm the intensity of a heat - which makes them easy prey for alphas in this state), and a common trope in omegaverse stories is omegas who live on heat suppressants pretending to be betas or even alphas, so they can access the same rights as others, or just don't have to deal with bullshit. This is the premise of my published novel, Blackwood, in my Perth Shifters series).

Efnisien was raised with the hopes that he would 'become' an alpha, and be treated better if he could just be good enough at it - for him that justified the mutilation, the agony, the sexual assault, being beaten constantly by Gwyn, and more - to give you an idea of just how much omegas don't always want to be omegas. Finding out that Crielle has given up on her project and has abandoned him to a place dedicated to making him a soft, passive, complaint omega to be fucked by an alpha in a relationship he has no control over with a spouse he can't choose for himself (arranged marriages are common for omega, and the norm in high society) is pretty mind-shattering for him.

Even if Hillview does it differently, even if he's away from being literally tortured by his family and has people around him who care for him, it's still a pretty profound fall from grace that he's struggling with. And because he's been raised with the worst (but not inaccurate) picture of the worst of the rehabiltation facilities, he thinks he's about to be treated worse than he was growing up.

He's not. But he doesn't know that yet, and we - as the reader (well I suppose I'm the writer but go with me here) - are only learning that over time ourselves.

The fact is, most omegas that aren't Efnisien actually are a lot more placid, docile, gentle, or easily controlled. They are easily taken advantage of. There's less omegas and alphas in this world than betas (though it doesn't seem like it because of the setting, so I need to find a way to get that worldbuilding in there), so they're often left to their own devices, because betas be out here having mostly regular relationships with each other, and the world has generally internalised 'omegas are so helpless they need an alpha to look out for them, so it's better they're in a not great relationship that isn't ideal, than being gang-raped on the streets by random alphas who will take advantage of them' (and sadly, this is sometimes true).

Gary is pretty groundbreaking as an omega psychologist who simply believes in an omega's autonomy. While he's not doing a great job of that in a one-on-one situation, the fact that Hillview is the way that it is already makes it extremely challenging within this dystopian universe. But because he's been raised in a world that has these views about omegas, he has that clash of - this is what I philosophically believe and this is what this centre is for vs. what he's internalised alongside the fact that he's not actually attracted to omegas.

We'll get more into this psychology and the nature of this world as the story goes along! But this is the cliff notes version of where we're at.
