Why does my dog lick me so much?

Being licked by your canine can be interpreted in a variety of ways, including as an expression of affection. What can you do if dog licking ever becomes an issue and why do dogs do it?

Why does my dog lick me so much?

For canines, licking comes naturally and instinctively. It serves as a means of self-expression, connecting, and grooming for them. Your dog may lick you to express their affection for you, to get your attention, to help them relax when they're stressed, to demonstrate empathy, or simply because they like the way you taste! It's possible that excessive licking is a symptom of anxiety, discomfort, or pain in your dog. Always seek guidance from a veterinarian or behaviorist if you are worried about your dog.

Dogs have an instinct to lick

Being a canine requires a lot of licking. It affects how they interact, groom, and display emotion. Mothers frequently lick their puppies to keep them clean, soothe them, and nudge them to use the bathroom. Puppies will groom themselves and their family, which is not only a good way to keep things clean but also a show of love, affection, and a wonderful way to strengthen family ties.

Why do dogs lick?

What do you usually do when you first greet a dog? Most likely, you stroked them. We naturally feel the need to touch their fur with our hands, which is a type of grooming. Dogs groom themselves with their tongues, so licking is a method for them to greet, connect with, and express affection. Dogs use their mouths and tongues to comprehend their environment and judge other people's moods, whereas humans use our hands to explore the world. Whether it be greeting you and gauging your attitude by licking your face, carrying objects in their mouths, or engaging in ball or toy play.

They’re showing affection

Dogs kiss each other to express their love. It's an innate behavior that's related to the security they experienced when their mother caressed them when they were puppies. They use licking to connect with others and release chemicals like dopamine and endorphins that make them feel content, at ease, and happy. Dogs undoubtedly enjoy stroking their loved ones, just as it feels good for us to do so.

They’re showing empathy

Licking is a calming behavior for canines. Your canine may attempt to lick you to comfort you and show that they care if they are worried about you. Researchers discovered that when owners pretended to cry in a 2012 study, their dogs were more likely to lick and pet them than when their owners were simply humming or conversing. Although it's possible that these dogs were just acting out a learned behavior, many of us believe that dogs can at least partially comprehend and share our emotions.

To get attention

A great method to get your attention is to lick. If your dog licks you, you presumably stroke, pet, talk to, or otherwise show your appreciation for them. This then motivates them to kiss you and increases their propensity to do so in the future.

We taste good

Have you ever observed that after exercising, your dog licks you more? especially on exposed skin that has been heavily perspired? When we perspire, salt and acidic chemicals are released, which our canines might find to be delectable. Never let your canine lick you after using certain medicines or lotions, such as psoriasis creams, as they can be extremely poisonous to dogs.

How good is a dog’s sense of taste?

How does a dog's sense of taste relate to ours given how well-known it is that their sense of smell is? Surprisingly, we have five times as many taste buds as a dog does, giving the impression that our perception of taste is superior. Dogs can taste things that are sweet, sour, salty, and bitter, just like humans can, but they are unable to perceive umami, a type of savory flavor that we can taste. Dogs can taste water, something we cannot, even though they cannot detect umami. Since our sense of smell accounts for about 80% of what we taste when we consume, it stands to reason that a dog's extraordinary sense of smell compensates for their lack of taste buds.

They’re hungry

When their mothers return from a search, young dogs in the wild may lick their lips to indicate that they are famished. Your canine may lick you to let you know they are feeling peckish because this instinct is hardwired into their behavior.

When is licking a problem?

Dogs use licking as a form of self-expression and because it comes naturally to them. Although some dogs may lick frequently while others may lick less, if your dog suddenly begins licking you frequently, it may indicate that something is wrong. If a dog is more anxious or has a health problem, such as an allergy, injury, or rheumatism, they may lick more frequently. Always call your veterinarian or a behaviorist if you have concerns about your canine or their behavior.

They’re anxious

Licking can be a calming behavior for dogs that makes them feel at ease, peaceful, and relaxed. Licking you or themselves may help them feel less stressed if they're feeling concerned or stressed, especially if they have separation anxiety.

Why do dogs eat poo?

Most dogs eat poo (also known as ‘coprophagia’) out of habit, hunger, stress, or boredom. Only a very small number do it because of illness or something lacking in their diet.

Habit - some dogs start eating poo at a young age, which then becomes a habit.

Hunger - some dogs eat poo when they are hungry. This could be because they’re not being fed enough, they have suddenly started doing more exercise, they have a health condition that’s making them extra hungry, or they’re on a medication that’s increasing their appetite.

Boredom, stress or anxiety - some dogs eat poo if they are bored, stressed, or anxious.

Attention - some dogs learn that eating poo gets them attention and if they are very bored, they might even think being told off is better than getting no attention at all.

Medical reasons - it’s rare for a dog to eat poo due to an illness or dietary deficiency. However, it’s best to contact your vet if you’re worried, especially if your dog has started eating poo very suddenly and it’s out of character for them. Make sure to tell your vet about any other symptoms you’ve noticed, such as weight loss, diarrhoea, vomiting, or a change in their coat. If your dog exclusively eats poo from one particular dog, it would be sensible to also have that dog checked to ensure nothing is wrong with them.

Mothers and puppies - it’s completely normal for a mother dog to eat their puppies’ poo so this should never be discouraged. Puppies will also sometimes eat their own poo, or their littermates’ poo out of curiosity, but this usually stops with age.

How to stop dogs eating poo

The best way to stop your dog eating poo is to distract them, take away the temptation, and give them something better to do. Don’t punish your dog or shout at them - this will be unsuccessful and confusing.

Steps to success:

Supervise - Monitor your dog’s outdoor time - even if they’re just going for a quick toilet in the garden.

Distract - As soon as your dog approaches a poo, use a friendly voice to enthusiastically call them back.

Reward Give them something more interesting to do – a treat, a game, lots of fuss, or all three. The distraction will need to be ‘high value’ i.e., yummy or special!

Remove temptation - If it’s a dog poo – pick it up, if it’s a livestock poo – walk away from it. If it’s everywhere – keep distracting your dog, or put them on the lead!

Repeat - As with any habit, it can take a while to break. You will need to repeat this routine every time your dog is near a poo - keep training and you will reap the rewards.

What not to do:

Don’t punish - If you shout at your dog they won’t understand why you are cross, and it might even make them eat the poo quicker (to stop you taking it away). If your dog manages to get hold of some poo while you are training them, just ignore them and continue as normal.

Don’t muzzle - Don’t use a muzzle to stop your dog eating poo – it doesn’t stop them wanting to eat it, and they’ll often still try– which can be very messy!

Don’t give up - It will take time and patience to get your dog out of the habit of eating poo. Eventually, though, your hard work will pay off and your dog will learn that it’s much more fun to play with you than to eat poo.

Does pineapple stop dogs eating their own poo?

Some people find that feeding their dog pineapple or courgette stops them from eating their own poo because it gives the poo a bitter taste. There is no evidence to suggest that this works but there is no harm in trying. It’s fine for dogs to eat pineapple and courgette, but introduce it to them slowly because any sudden changes in diet can cause a stomach upset.

How do I stop my dog eating cat poo?

If your dog eats cat poo out the litter tray, the best solution is to put the tray somewhere they can’t reach. Move it up high, into a room/cupboard only your cat can access (microchip cat flaps are great for this), or consider using the type of litter box that is only accessible from the top.

When to contact your vet/behaviourist

If your dog has suddenly started eating poo, and doesn’t seem right in themselves, call your vet for advice. It’s a good idea to have a vet check-up to look for any medical causes before starting any training.
