Why do you even bother reblogging whitewashed art?

Directly from the FAQ! The second bullet isn't Quite what you're asking, but it gets the basic point across - an archive is not an archive if it only conveys the most positive aspects of its source; racism and uncomfortable tropes and intracommunity disagreements are all an important part of the history of anything, including fandom. There are some rare ships which only have content wherein a character is whitewashed; removing whitewashed content is erasing the entire presence thereof.

Short of things that actively trigger me and things which may get my account suspended, I think that it's an important part of preservation to show that these issues have always been here - how they have been presented previously - in what ways they have manifested - what this means for how they will manifest in the future. I find this particularly important in Danganronpa, a series which centers on propaganda, the effects of desensitization, and cyclical structural violence. There are ships and pieces that I'm personally uncomfortable with but keep on the blog despite that, because I think it's important on a larger level as an archival project. Those who do not know history, etc etc.

And also. I truly am just godawful at seeing colors. I'm very much not a visual person. It removes a lot of my anxiety to at least have a tag I can slap on it so that, even if I'm under or overestimating, people have a warning.

So basically I got mad that @top-fictional-psychotic-woman was an "evil fictional woman bracket", but instead of annoying the mod, I went "huh, mentally ill characters sounds like a good first tournament".

The rules of the tournament goes as follows:

The character must be mentally ill in some way, be it personality disorder, psychotic disorder, depression, anxiety, really bad trauma, etc.

Headcanons and word-of-author are 100% allowed (rarely characters admit being mentally ill on screen so...)

The character can be villainous, but I would prefer if they weren't.

If the character is a villain, you have to explain why they're mentally ill besides "they're a villain" or "they look crazy". Example: Most versions of Joker wouldn't be allowed since he isn't mentally ill in them as far as I know, but the 2019 movie version would because his mental illness isn't his violence and murders, is his hallucinations that he's dating that neighbor that takes the elevator with him.

You can submit multiple characters as a group if they're already a group in the source. Example: the Literature Club from Doki Doki Literature Club or Doctor Palomero's patients from the Spanish movie Toc Toc (watch Toc Toc, it's such a funny movie).

There's no restrictions on what fandom the character is from. You can submit characters from MCYT, Attack On Titan, hell even Adam Sandler movies if you want to, despite how much I don't like those movies.

No real people please, unless it's a fictionalized version of that person. Example: real life Van Gogh wouldn't be allowed, but Van Gogh from that Doctor Who episode would.

Feel free to send propaganda as asks or reblogs (though send it in the post instead of the tags), but I will only reblog propaganda uplifting a character, not bad mouthing other characters. If you're consistently negative about any character in the bracket, you will be blocked.

Please don't bring up discourse like "that character is actually really problematic". Do you know how short this bracket would be if there was only clean, advertiser-friendly depictions of mental illness here?

If you could explain, I'm only learning this now! What's going on with Gato? I've only seen vague posts but I know all social media is gone (because by god fucking twitter apparently) I've seen from the fake gatobob account post about recent events and I'm soo confused. I'll try to be brief? please don't take me as the authority on this, I just happened to get into the tags while it was unfolding earlier today. still going under a read more though. i suppose a tw for mentions of racism and xenophobia are warranted. And please do not interact if you are a minor or have no age listed on your blog, I will block you.

Gato deleted her social media accounts this morning (tumblr, twitter, pillowfort) and explained on patreon it was for her mental health and safety (which... safety? hm) and someone here immediately claimed the gatobob url. which happens, it's tumblr. but this person is using it basically as a callout center.

the callout seems to be about an incident that happened in the patreon exclusive discord server before it got shut down a couple months ago. tldr according to this person, someone (a mod?) made a racist comment towards someone, and gato apparently handled the situation poorly and neither her or the mods apology were really that great. I was in the server as a lurker more than anything, but I don't remember being there when this happened.

other people sending in asks to this new gatobob account have also been calling her out for xenophobia, but I have a feeling that's looking a little bit too much into statements she's made about her games being redistributed in Russia and Spain specifically if i recall correctly.

this new blog is demanding gato and the aforementioned mod properly apologize for their behaviour, but in my opinion, this is a really weird and bad way to go about it. Smart to use her url as a way to boost the problem, but... I haven't seen any solid evidence besides some very vague screenshots, none of them including the racist remarks (the screenshots they've posted so far definitely aren't good responses or apologies if they ARE linked to this incident, and it should have been taken seriously) And the victim from the racism incident is NOT the person running the new gatobob account, so it feels very weird to me that this person is taking it upon themselves to stir everyone up and demand things from gato and the mod.

as far as I can tell, gato hasn't said anything about this on patreon, although she's likely taking her separation from social media very seriously. If she is aware (and I'm sure she's getting plenty of DMs about this on patreon), she'll likely make a post there addressing it in the next couple days, but that's just speculation.

I'm keeping a mostly neutral stance in this whole thing, but I'm encouraging people to not interact with this new gatobob account. There's nothing we can really do; they aren't impersonating her, posting anything against ToS as far as Im aware, and people have been hoarding urls for years. Just... listen and learn, I think is all I can suggest. Form your own opinions, but don't go on a witch hunt about it, if that makes any sense.

I'll try to answer other questions, but I'm just one guy on the internet who doesn't usually get tangled with things like this. Please be patient.

Do you know any herbology books that aren't. . .idk, mostly only theoretic?

I took a long time to answer this question for a couple reasons. First, I’m not fully sure what you mean by “theoretic,” but I’m assuming you mean you’re looking for herbology/herbalism books that are more practical and less “this herb heals depression because it elevates your kidney vibrations” type of stuff. Second, if that is what you’re looking for, there’s unfortunately not a ton of books that I’ve found like that.

The one herbalism book I keep on hand is Penelope Ody’s The Complete Medicinal Herbal. It does have a lot of the more “woo” stuff as well, but I like that it provides photos of the plants, lists the actual botanical and chemical compounds in each plant that does stuff, and points out when a plant might not be safe for certain people. The other book I keep on hand is Sharon M. Herr’s Herb-Drug Interaction Handbook, which tells you which herbs are safe and which are dangerous/deadly or could mess with dosages if you want to try herbal remedies while also taking other medications.

I have heard good things about Body Into Balance: An Herbal Guide to Holistic Self-Care by Maria Noel Groves, The Modern Herbal Dispensary: A Medicine-Making Guide by Thomas Easley and Steven Horne, and The Nature Cure: A Doctor’s Guide to the Science of Natural Medicine by Andreas Michalsen, MD. Since I haven’t personally read any of them, I can’t unreservedly recommend them, but they might be worth a look. I DO recommend “The Science of Integrative Medicine” from The Great Courses, which is a series of lectures from an MD with the Mayo Clinic discussing a variety of alternative medicine remedies (both herbal and other types) and the science behind them. It’s more from a patient perspective than from someone who actually wants to do some herbology, but I found it helpful. I listened to it for free through my local library.

Herbology/herbalism resources are pretty scattered and often in the realm of the less-than-scientific. Studying botany is a good foundation for herbology (and “pharmacology” is a good keyword for further information about a specific plant), and absolutely avoid anything that talks about “energetics.” An unfortunate fact of herbology is that a lot of these herbal remedies and cures just haven’t been studied. So it’s very possible that some of the remedies do actually work, but nobody has done the research to figure out how or why. It makes being interested in herbology but not interested in “clearing your liver energy” or whatnot very difficult.

I've been waiting for Baldur's Gate 3 with so much gotdang anticipation and now that it's finally here I'm reconsidering my plan to buy a PS5 to play it, because the console itself is $500 and I like to play old Windows games from the early 2000s that have become available on Steam again. I'm currently using an old Macbook Pro (2017) with a dead screen that still connects to external monitors and running bootcamp to run Windows, so I'm thinking of skipping the PS5 (I've had a 4 for a while) and getting a gaming PC instead. You've patiently answered countless questions about hardware for people and I'm hoping you can recommend a setup that I can use to play BG3 and Command & Conquer and Age of Empires II via Steam. Signed, someone who got trapped into the Apple ecosystem long ago and has now idea how much I should expect to spend for something like this or what kinds of components to look for and is ashamed because I used to mod my own PCs in the late 90's and is angry because I'm vaguely aware of what cryptominers are doing to the graphics card supply.

So my primary massive tech blindspot is that I don't know anything at all about video games, consoles, and graphics cards. I don't really do much with them for work and I don't play any games myself so it's just not my wheelhouse.

So if anyone wants to drop into the comments with advice here, that would be fantastic!

Now, that being said, I've had to purchase something like 5 gaming computers for work in the past few years and the company we've worked with is a local shop called NZXT, who do customizable prebuilts and fully custom computers at what seem like decent prices with decent specs. Our customers have been very happy with the computers we've purchased through NZXT, so I feel pretty comfortable recommending them as a place to get a gaming computer. Their prices start at around $1000, which is what I understand is a common entry level price for gaming computers.

If you use their custom build tool it guides you based on price and the performance you can expect from different games on the system, which seems handy (but which I don't fully understand the import of).

To add to the pile of questionable tumblr behavior as of late, and as a psa at large:

I searched a mental health related tag last week and I got immediately a message from a bot called Koko. It intended to put me through to "people who are interested in mental health topics". In this tumblr message format, they didn't immediately facilitate hotlines, specific mental health care services or professional help, just "people".

I didn't respond to it. It's a bot. I didn't block it because I was interested to see where it would lead, but I didn't talk back. In the following days, it kept sending me messages, trying to get me to use their service.

Among the messages, they told me how it works, not that I had asked:

So, it sounds like a recipe for disaster in the making to me. My personal mental health information being passed through random tumblr users and getting a reply from someone who, not only isn't a professional or part of any sort of mental health care group I could get informed about, but they also will provide unsupervised answers to topics of great importance to someone who was looking into related tags.

But, tumblr user thewindandthewolves seems to endorse it, so let's check them out and see what they have to say.

Well. I'm posting the responses in chronological order, but I guess the raving review from a tumblr user was actually a kid who didn't give them consent to use their words as endorsement. Great look.

Today, I got a new message. Again, unprompted.

Second review person has apparently deleted their blog, so no background information on that one. If that's you, let us know.

I decided to look at their blog and read people's comments on their posts. The tumblr userbase came through with the receipts and linked this very detailed article about not only the bot and its founder but the sketchy study it uses as a foundation:

Here's an important quote from this article regarding the study in which Koko is founded as a clear notion of what consent means to them:

Morris [Koko's founder] declined to say whether he thought the subjects had meaningfully consented to the study. He told Motherboard that his goal was to establish a new best practice, where he would be able to transparently show his results to social media platforms. However, when asked if he felt that the experiment was transparent to the participants involved, he said he’d needed more time to think about it. 

It's not a tough one to respond to, Morris.

I suggest you to please read the whole article but the way in which these people perform verbal gymnastics to try to justify the lack of consent from people involved is alarming.

Stony Brook's IRB [Institutional Review Board] and multiple people tasked with overseeing the IRB did not respond to multiple emails from Motherboard about the study or the process. Facebook, Discord, and Tumblr responded to Motherboard’s initial emails but did not provide comment. Telegram did not respond to Motherboard’s request for comment. 

The article also read the fine print of the Terms of Service, the only thing they provide as any type of consent to users, and the previous situation of using tumblr user posts without them knowing is illuminated further:

The current dynamic between Koko and its users more closely parallels the relationship between most tech companies and their users than that between a mental health provider and patient. Its Terms of Service, for instance, state that, “You grant Koko a fully paid, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, transferable and fully sublicensable right (including any moral rights) and license to use, license, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt, prepare derivative works of, publicly perform, publicly display, and otherwise fully exploit Your Content.” 

As an editor, that sounds more like a US release agreement form for intellectual property, which should not be used as any form of mediation for personal data. It also alarms me to no end that the "Content" in question, in the example we have was, according to OP, a post they had made on their own blog about Kokobot and not a response or quote provided to Kokobot itself which, in tow, signifies that the data collected could come from anywhere and not only what you actively provide them. But what do I know.

I did more digging by myself and found even more articles denouncing the behavior of this bot and company, this being another interesting one:

This one included the following thing about the peer-counseling aspect of it and the use of AI to craft the supposed "people" responses:

During the AI experiment—which applied to about 30,000 messages, according to Morris—volunteers providing assistance to others had the option to use a response automatically generated by OpenAI's GPT-3 large language model instead of writing one themselves (GPT-3 is the technology behind the recently popular ChatGPT chatbot).

Apparently, Koko has been around for a while, with articles discussing it as far as, at least, 2017. Still, I had never before received unprompted, unwanted, invasive messages from it on tumblr until now.

If you post or search tags related to mental health, it's very likely that you'll get this bot in your messages or you already have. There are many layers of breach of ethics in this situation, in my opinion, each one worse than the last one.

Before using it or sharing any information at all (with any bot ever), I'd advice you to look into it beforehand. I know we are the "trust no bots" website and the fake ladybots have taught us well on how to spot them and protect ourselves, but this one in particular seems very dangerous to me.

I can't talk about whether or not this has helped anybody, I'm not coming anywhere near it, but the sole concept of this sounds like a bad idea. The advice provided doesn't seem to come from selected professionals the platform is endorsing legally but by random people (and/or AI) who are not only not trained for it, they aren't being compensated for work made for a program, which is probably making good money out of all the social media platforms it's working with. It also allows them to not be responsible for the advice given, to some extent.

Even if people with mental health concerns can discuss things between them in very productive and helpful ways, there isn't genuinely transparent communication if it's anonymously mediated by a company and there isn't a proper professional care that can accompany them from someone who is trained to facilitate it. You can talk to a friend without having to provide data to a company that could identify you since, according to the first article:

There is, further, no easy way to wall the collection of such data off from actual subjects, as anonymized datasets can often still be traced back to specific individuals. (A 2019 study found that 99.98 percent of Americans could be correctly re-identified in any dataset using 15 demographic attributes.) This is why privacy experts have been vocal about the exploitation of data privacy and the unreliability of an anonymous dataset. 

I'm not here to tell anyone what to do or not to do but I'm here to share this because I know that I would appreciate the information if someone else had come across it instead. Make decisions with all the information you can get.

Throwing a wild idea for the hellsite but maybe staff and ceo should be a little less occupied in persecuting trans folk and more into reading the fine print of the unethical companies they're signing with, who are exploiting their userbase's mental health, especially that of literal children whose quotes are being used to endorse their business without any legal consent, aside from a terribly worded TOS. But what do I know.

Overview:

In the aftermath of the events of the Sumeru Archon quest, Epsilon is a Segment on the run from his creator, Dottore. Saved from being purged like the other Segments by only a bit of faulty programming, Epsilon is now forced to reckon with his creator's actions, his imperfections, and a newfound sense of individuality.

Rules:

Mod is a minor, so absolutely no NSFW is allowed. Any NSFW is an immediate block and blacklist. If this account interacts with you and you are not comfy with interaction with minors, mod apologizes, despite his efforts sometimes things slip through the cracks.

Mod likes morally corrupt characters. Yes, mod still has boundaries about how far he is willing to take them. Push these boundaries and you will be blocked.

This blog allows shipping so long as it is of age. That said, no relationship with Epsilon will ever be fully healthy or normal. He is highly likely to see the whole relationship as an ongoing experiment and it shows.

No shipping wars. I'll just block you. Also most of mod's personal ships are OC x canon, so please respect that he often has no opinion on most canon x canon ships. While he is happy to talk about his headcanons and OC x canon ships, harassment over it will lead to a block.

All ships will be a medium to slow burn. Epsilon takes awhile to actually trust people.

Personality:

Epsilon is an intelligent man with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, but he's also a coward at heart. He's arrogant and often too proud to ask for help - or too afraid to. Generally, he gives off the unsettling vibes of an unstable madman, which he is. However, he is also talkative and curious, and who's to say he can't occasionally rein himself in long enough to be 'normal'?

Appearance:

Epsilon is a tall and lanky individual with messy blue hair, red eyes, and a chemical burn scar over the upper left side of his face. He tends to wear all kinds of glowing vials of liquid, button-up shirts, an oversized labcoat, and a bright red bandana. His smile is filled with unnaturally sharp teeth. Pressing down too hard on the bridge of his nose will open his faceplate and reveal the mechanical workings beneath.

Other trivia:

This man is way more easily startled than he'd have you believe

Epsilon carries all of Dottore's memories, including any and all traumatic ones (being branded a heretic, facing continuous rejection from his own people, being an outcasted child prodigy...) and it heavily affects him

He doesn't really need to eat but he loves meat. Raw meat. Please don't let him prepare food for you
