For Christine: 2, 3, 6, 25!
THANK YOU for the Christine ask, I could write essays about her!!!
2. Favorite canon thing about the character!
This is a tough one because there is a lot I love about Christine, but I’m going to go with the fact that she is nearsighted in the novel!! It doesn’t say anything about her wearing glasses though, so I like to imagine that her getting Erik mixed up with the Angel of Music/the spirit of her dead dad is partly because her vision is too blurry to see him clearly. 😂 (Hmm, now I wanna write something about Christine getting glasses, because there’s not enough content about nearsighted!Christine out there… 🤔)
3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?
Probably the fact that she took off Erik’s mask without permission. Sure, he shouldn’t have reacted as viciously as he did, and he did lots of things to her over the course of the story that were worse than taking off a mask, but I just can’t figure out what Christine was thinking when she did that?? I understand that it was her curiosity getting the better of her, but I think she is smart enough to know that he would not like it if she took off his mask, after he explicitly warned her never to do so.
6. What’s something you have in common with this character?
I see a lot of myself in Christine, and I think of her as a role model of who I wish I could be. I think some of that stems from the fact that we are both seen as quiet or nice by the people around us, and so they assume that they can do/say anything they want and we will still be nice to them. Well sometimes it’s REALLY HARD to be nice, and it’s even harder to accept that it’s okay to not be nice to some people, especially those that hurt you. I see this as a simplified analogy of what happens to Christine during the story: she gets manipulated and tossed around by both Erik and Raoul, until eventually she reaches her breaking point.
But the beautiful thing about Christine is that her kindness is what saves the day; it’s what helps Erik finally see the wrongs that he’s done and convinces him to let her and Raoul go. And that’s what's so empowering to me, because so often in today’s world kindness and compassion are seen as weak traits, but Christine proves that they are strong.
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
My first impression of Christine came about from the prevalence of POTO in pop culture, which exposed me to an idea of who Christine was before I had ever seen or read anything about the actual story. Basically, I fell into the common belief that she is your typical ingenue or damsel-in-distress, and consequently she was another boring and static female lead. Oh, how little I knew…
Now, she might be my favorite character of all time, I love her THAT much. After watching versions of her on stage and screen and ESPECIALLY after reading the novel, I just fell in love with her compassion and her spunk. I adore how she’s allowed to be equal parts broken and strong, sexy and demure, fiery and gentle. She’s so much more than she is on the surface.
