hello!! do you have any series, animes/mangas, movies you reccommend? i really adore your tastes in things and im curious to know where you take those impeccable tastes from!!
Doing this quickly to avoid putting every single thing I like in here for you like a crazy person, most of them will be things I ran into when I was younger and still really like- I find that those have shaped my taste a lot as I got older. There aren't that many mangas because I just wasn't in an area that was good for finding new releases + I can't remember the dumb little shoujos I read online by now. But I will say that I'm fairly picky when it comes to media in terms of having competent writing and engaging characters.
Also fair warning about some of the older shows- while I would rather be shot than watch 10 more seconds of a show with a panty shot there is nothing I can do about 2000s anime brand homophobia
Ghibli (meaningful look at the camera) just in general. Though my favorite things about Miyazaki's films come more from his social commentary and cosmologies rather than just how pretty the films are (but they are VERY pretty). Working class rights
Literally any 2000s pokemon movie I'm not kidding about this. The Lugia one IN PARTICULAR but seriously any of them I went crazy for pokemon
Inuyasha (2000 anime)
Dungeon Meshi (2014 manga. When this anime comes out I'm going to explode or something)
Blue Giant (2013 manga. This is also becoming an anime so I hope there's enough viscera left for me to explode a second time)
The Vision of Escaflowne (1996 anime + the movie too. It's silly and weird but still feels fine to watch)
Last Exile (2003 anime)
Stardust (2007 live-action film)
The Last Unicorn (1982 animated film)
DragonHeart (1996 live-action film)
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit (2007 anime)
X'amd: Lost Memories (2009 anime)
Fruits Basket (2001 anime, the new one is really good though)
Princess Jellyfish (2014 anime)
Princess Tutu (2002 anime)
Origin: Spirits of the past (2006 animated film)
Secret of Kells (2010 animted film)
Souleater, Naruto, Ouran Highschool Host club....
+ my friend got a Shonen Jump magazine in 2011 when he traveled out of state and it had like. One chapter of something called Tegami Bachi. I was obsessed with the character designs and didn't know literally anything about the story. I still don't. sorry Tegami Bachi fandom your little boy in a hat transfixed me. This is worth mentioning because I used to trace pictures of him on the windows in my room
This is an intensely truncated list but lmk if you end up watching even one. These dumb things made me so happy to be a kid

What if?? Review of 'Tokyo Tarareba Girls' Vol. 1
Overview: 'Tokyo Tarareba Musume', known in english as 'Tokyo Tarareba Girls' or 'Tokyo What If Girls', is a josei manga series by 'Princess Jellyfish' author Akiko Higashimura, and was published in Kodansha's 'Kiss' magazine from 2014-2017. The story follows single, middle-aged Rinko, a screenwriter, constantly in the shadow of regret for her actions in the past in terms of her relationship status. Rinko even made a goal to herself to get married by the time the Summer Olympics come to Tokyo in 2020. She spends most nights in the bar with her friends, drinking themselves silly while venting and complaining about their work and love lives, much to the annoyance of the other bar patrons. One patron, a young male model and actor named Key, even calls them out on this, titling Rinko and her friends the "What If" girls. The rest of the volume follows a comedic story of Rinko trying to find her power in the work-force, dealing with Key and his criticism over her behavior, and encountering a rather wild romantic experience at the end.
Review: I enjoy shoujo/josei titles a lot, it's even my favorite genre to read, and this one definitely scratched that itch. Being a fan of 'Princess Jellyfish', I was glad to see some of the artistic and narrative styles of Higashimura being present in 'Tokyo Tarareba Girls' while keeping this title it's own entity. The work touches on some cultural topics that are relevant in Japan, such as the struggle of being a woman in the workforce, and the social pressure to fit the norm of being a 'good house wife', as we see Rinko desperately trying to fit into that field. 'Tokyo Tarareba Girls' has a great art style, and you can see it throw in classic shoujo tropes from the layering whenever Rinko has a mental breakthrough or breakdown, the beautiful boys trope when it comes to the devilishly handsome Key, and a story filled with internal struggles of romance rather than action. I enjoyed the humor a lot in this as well, and found Rinko to be a very likeable, albeit naïve in a lovable way, protagonist. The pacing was also good, as Higashimura kept the story going fast in the right places, as well as slowing it down for readers to digest the more important moments. I would recommend volume one for anyone who is a fan of the shoujo/josei scene, especially if they want a story centered on working adults rather than the cliché (yet I still love) highschool romance setting, and I cant wait to read more of the story.

Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT

elianna’s best anime of the decade!
best of is here, under the cut is a lot of word vomit and honorable mentions and stuff
2010- princess jellyfish
2011- steins; gate
2012- tsuritama?? idk i didn’t really have a best for this year
2013- uchouten kazoku
2014- barakamon
2015- noragami (this only works bc im including aragoto, the first season was in 2014 but shhh)
2016- 3gatsu no lion
2017- made in abyss
2018- yuru camp (probably, i didn’t thoroughly go through my 2018s but)
2019- i’m still behind on this, but as of right now it’s vinland saga and i don’t see that changing tbh
spoilers to follow for steins;gate and made in abyss!
EDIT: i’m editing this like 2 weeks later bc i cant believe i forgot the promised neverland. i don’t have anything intelligent to say other than GOOD. the mystery was great, the suspense was great, the character animation was great. all good. i’m reading the manga so i’m excited to see what’s next!
ok so summer 2019- given. one of those shows so good that it got me to read the manga (only a handful of shows have gotten me to do that) so. its good yo. the character drama and the way characters interacted with each other was so much fun to watch, and also like. canon queer characters, so bonus points for that. but what really got me was towards the end, when mafuyu finally sang his song and it just destroyed me in the best way possible. the raw emotion (when he screams in the middle of the song, just *chef’s kiss*), the storytelling, i just! so good. i’m so excited for the movie but also terrified because 1) they could fuck it up so easily and 2) non-manga readers will inevatibly watch it and then say given is “cancelled” and . there’s already enough people reading the manga for the first time and doing that i really don’t want more of them
spring 2011- steins; gate! slow start, but absolutely worth it. i was hooked after the ending of episode 1, and it continued from there. but what really got me was towards the middle, when mayuri died, and then there was that episode after of just scene after scene after scene of okabe trying and failing to save her. it was so emotional and raw and GOOD, and it really raised the stakes for the following episodes. so good.
there are multiple seasons so im not giving this one a year but- natsume yuujinchou! one of the most soothing, but also emotional shows i’ve watched. the found family natsume finds with his friends but also his adopted parents after enduring abuse previously is just. ;_; all the youkai stories are done so well too, and it’s just. very good. my favorite seasons were san, shi, go, and roku (three, four, five, and six)! i still haven’t watched the movie yet tho bc i’m never in the right emotional state lol (in other words: i’m never ready to be depressed for a full day afterwards)
fall 2012- this boy caught a merman. no explanation here, i love soubi yamamoto. also assume everything she’s made 2010-2019 is on here save for meganebu and this boy suffers from crystallization
fall 2016- a silent voice. duh. have you SEEN this movie?
fall 2015- noragami! i’m completley biased but fuk u. i adore noragami and its world and its characters and its story and i. bones season 3 when
march 2016- kanojo to kanojo no neko: everything flows. this is 4 episodes, about 8 minutes each and i cried so
summer 2017- made in abyss. look i know this show is contreversial and rightly so. it’s got Issues, and i can’t reccomend it blindly like i can some of the others on this list but god if i didn’t love it. the music, the background art (animated by a former ghibli animator!), the story, the lore, the emotion (when reg and riko had to say goodbye to maruk...when reg finally killed mitty, and nanachi’s wails afterwards...) its Good, what do you want from me
summer 2011- no. 6. good and queer. also when am i getting my reunion. god
fall 2011- chihayafuru. hoooooo boy are my thoughts on this one Complicated. i adore chihayafuru, the sport of karuta is fascinating and thanks to this anime i learned how to play the game and joined a karuta club. even participated in an official comp in japan. .....also got my ass handed to me and was so discouraged that i quit the game So
summer 2013- uchouten kazoku. a hidden gem! i liked season 1 more than season 2, but it was such a fun show!
spring 2015- kekkai sensen. this show was so much fun! remember how the last episode got delayed for like a month+. that was fun. again i liked season 1 more than season 2, but whatever. black was my favorite! and black and white’s relationship was so sweet ;_;
winter 2015- assasination classroom. this was such a ridiculous show, but a lot of fun. karma was my fave! cheeky lil bastard
winter 2016- doukyuusei. it was queer and good
fall 2016- 3gatsu no lion. yet again i enjoyed the first season more than the second, but still an amazing show. rei was such a good main character, and his battles with depression and just his inner-mind in general were so interesting to watch.
winter 2017- miss kobayashi’s dragon maid. this was such a feel-good show. also involved found family and was also queer and good. like made in abyss it had Issues (and like made in abyss the issues were similar....sigh), but if you can ignore those, it was really good and wholesome.
spring 2018- liz and the blue bird. i went into this having not watched hibike (besides like 2 episodes back when the first season was airing), but naoko yamada is amazing so. the raw emotions were SO GOOD. also the fantasy scenes were so much fun to watch.
??? 2019- vinalnd saga. does this count? i mean it STARTED it 2019, even if it finished in 2020. anyway this was really good
