Unpopular opinion but......

Am I the only one who misses the og marauders? The marauders fandom isn't even about the marauders now, 99% of their canon personality traits hv been replaced with cliqued behaviour. For some reason there's a massive obsession with their sexuality and I just don't get it? Lyk can't u have a character with any sexual orientation with personality traits outside it anymore? Does there really need to be a complete erasure of their most defining traits? I just wish we could get the actual marauders era characters back

James Potter: Pureblood, rich, intelligent, arrogant, a bully, but extremely loyal; took Sirius in and turned into an animagus for his werewolf bestie when the whole world would have shunned him; he could have led a life of utmost comfort but chose to risk his life and fight for those he loved in a war that didn't even concern him personally. His last words were asking his wife and child to escape while he tried to hold voldy off without a wand

Sirius Black: Haughty, a bully, extremely good looking, cool, rich, blood traitor by 16, comes from a family of literal death eaters, very intelligent, loyal, will do anything for those he loves( especially james and later Harry), thick as hell (my boy really survived in a depression prison for 12yrs, tht too after all the horror he'd seen before that), dark, very traumatized and broken

Remus Lupin: Gentle (yup u read that right), kind, mischievous (ppl really overlook this), very insecure, let james and Sirius bully Snape coz he was too thankful for their acceptance and affection to tell them off, considered himself undeserving of love, his self loathing prevents him from being a responsible adult/ parent for Harry, lowkey manipulative. Very compassionate and empathetic even after everything he's been thru tho

Peter Pettigrew: Considered slow and stupid, insecure, tags along with the others for protection, but obviously cunning and manipulative, a disgusting rat tho

Regulus Black: Teenage Reggie worshipped death eaters, he had newspaper clippings of them on his wall, completely believed in those racist ideologies until he realised what the reality of being a death eater was. He tried to bring voldy down but there's no evidence of him completely changing his beliefs about everything else like muggle borns, muggles, werewolves etc. Very cunning and intelligent tho, he discovered voldemort's secret before Dumbledore did. Liked kreacher but kreacher was also brainwashed with pureblood ideology, so I ll only give him half the credit. Bravely sacrificed his life in the end, but he still chose to protect his racist family.

Lily Evans: muggleborn, good at portions, described as popular and vivacious, pretty, the favourite sibling, isn't afraid of standing up to ppl (tht smirk in swm tho?), very brave, and most importantly (ppl really choose to forget this nowadays) a mother who stood in front of her baby boy in hopes of saving him from the darkest wizard alive even tho she herself was only 21 at the time, tht too right after losing her husband. Tho I'd still say that lily is a badly written character

It's fun to explore characters but not one of these core characteristics r even present. They're turned into one dimensional social justice warriors who r always right in everything they do

Now I get it, ppl want them to fit with current day ideals, but y not just create different/new characters then? What's the point of holding on to that nostalgia if most of their character isn't even there anymore? Where's all the toxicity coming from? And anyone who doesn't agree is homophobic and whatever other -phobic u choose to employ in the most irrelevant context ever. It's all so stupid smh🙄

You know what's the age old misogynistic moment in fandom that I always hated? Blaming Lily and demonizing her for what happened in SWM. Which is wild cause she's the only decent blameless person in that scene.

Historically it used to be just Snape fans.

But recently the New Marauders fans have joined them, who are washing them of all complexity and flaws that made them interesting and gave them character arcs, and turning them into uwu boring one-note amoeba characters. They don't like that bad Lily is mean to uwu James. This has been going on for a while now, but I just saw a new post criticizing jily fics for giving James the change and growth arc that starts out with him being annoying and for having Lily dislike him at first and then changing her mind, as if she forced him to change for her, and I know I can never trust male character fans with female characters, especially when they're shippers and ship the ship that shall not be named.

I kinda get the feeling that dumbledor choose James Potter as head boy because he wanted Lily Evans and dint want him keep undermining her authority in public . That was serious shit , if he put a head girl mugle born and gryphondor in that role and then she was treated like nice pice of ass evrytime she tried to use her power on a gryphondor , the males in other houses would have followed suite (especially those that already had a problem with her blood line ) . That and he wanted to curry favour with Potter , again , they were close to graduation and needed his choosen soldier well in his pocket with the money and prestige that bought to his side , after all he never made them cover their faces in battle .

Hii 💖🫶🏻 I have a question. Who’s worse, Draco Malfoy, James Potter or Sirius Black?

Hi :)

I love this question, because those 3 characters are very significant to me.

Back when I couldn't accept the gospel of Drarry, I settled for Wolfstar and took Sirius as my blorbo. He is just like me fr in that he has an aggressively abusive racist family; he did destructive, impulsive things; and he has the conflict of wanting to reject his family but having to wonder if he is just like them. So Sirius's violent streak is very much relatable.

Draco was always my #1 blorbo since I first read the books (it just sucked that I didn't like any of the popular ships with him). He is also just like me fr in that he's an attention whore and a spiteful little bitch when he doesn't get attention and praise, especially if someone else steals the spotlight. Plus, now that I do like Drarry, and even see one-sided Drarry as one possible version of canon, there is also the relatability of being toxic as hell to your crush because you want to interact with them but they don't like you back and you don't know how/hate to be vulnerable. Plus, I find his whole dramatic and self-centered privileged boi personality both hilarious and endearing.

And then there's James, who is possibly my least favourite character in the entire series. It's surprising, because I usually like bullies and bad people in general in fiction — see how I like Draco — so why does James squick me? Well, now I feel like maybe writing a whole post about it someday when I can articulate it better, but for now:

I think it's the mix of his offences involving creepy male heterosexuality and him being portrayed and accepted by much of the fandom as a good person overall — there's much there to repel me and nothing for me to relate to or enjoy.

Misogynistic fictional fuckboy behaviour to me is like, I could actually be into him if he were portrayed and seen as a predator who harasses women because he's such a sick and twisted tortured soul (fic recs welcome); but he's potrayed and seen as a righteous wholesome hero who just made a few mistakes as a teen, and I really do not vibe with that, when the mistakes include being a sex creep to a woman.

I'm not shaming anyone for being James fans, people can be impacted differently or give different subjective weight to different traits of a fictional character (I literally just said my fave is the racist). It's just that to me personally James's flaws outweigh everything else about him, so I could only like him if he were a villain, but then I don't usually see him be framed that way.

Lily was Mean Girled

If you have watched the move Mean Girls, I feel like you'll understand exactly what I mean.

In Snape's Worst Memory, we see Lily half-heartedly attempt to defend him, hold back a smile and then after the 'Mudblood' incident proceed to sneer and tease along with the Mauraders. However, from Sev's previous memories of when they were younger Lily seemed the way McGonagall and others saw her as; kind, caring, gentle, ect.

From before she leaves to Hogwarts with Sev she remains this way all up until she is sorted into Gryffindor. Because that is where the change begins.

A common negative Gryffindor trait, I've seen is that they often judge a book by its cover. This is displayed by many of the Gryffindor students, past and present: Harry (against Snape, Slytherin), Ron (Slytherin, against the Snape and arguably werewolves and house-elves at one point) Mr and Mrs Weasley (Slytherin, arguably the Malfoy's), Hermione (Divination, Slytherin) even McGonagall at times.

Lily instantly displayed this trait, when Sev used accidentally magic (key word accidental) and hurt Petunia. She jumpes to conclusions based on judgements, and believes herself to be right in the moment. (A further display of Gryffindor arrogance, another 'negative' Gryffindor trait)

Because we don't know exactly how they made up and became friends, I feel like Lily had realized her mistake or curiosity overwhelmed her to seek Sev out.

Another point to note, is Lily takes Petunia's insults rather close to heart. She is genuinely hurt her sister sees her this way, calls her a freak, rips up her letters. I bet Lily did everything she could to bridge this gap. Talked about things Petunia liked, dressed a certain way acted a certain way, ect.

Anyways, let's jump to Hogwarts: this is were the mean girls thing really plays in. Lily in this case, represents Cady, the main character from Mean Girls. Regina George and her clique, the Gryffindors, represent her roommates and Gryffindor friends and the eventually the Mauraders.

Now they like Lily, but they don't like that she hangs around with Sev and doesn't have the same values as them. So even though they are not explicitly mean or cruel, they make her feel like a outsider, something which Lily is not used to and doesn't like (Petunia had made her feel the same way, and to Lily. Outsider meant freak, not worthly, not good enough) So, over time (as everyone has tried to do at some point) she tries to fit in. It's starts of small, the way she talks, the ways she dresses, the way she does her hair, the way she acts with her Gryffindor friends, compared to Sev. (who represents Janis, to an extent)

Now, its worth to note, the same thing is happening to Sev. However with one key difference: he's used to being the outsider. He's has the mentality of 'me vs the world', which doesn't really change. He adapts, he learns, however he still remains Sev. He becomes used to it, the slurs, the blood purists, but it hasn't become part of him. He doesn't have to unlearn it, like Draco and arguably Ron does. He makes friends, other than Lily for once and (this is a time of ongoing war with a notorious Slytherin/dark wizard) this protects him and others from attacks. War undoubtedly entered school, soiling Slytherin's name and turning the rest of the houses against them. Slytherin's protect their own, in whatever way they can. (And you just know Slughorn was not helpful)

Being friends with a Muggleborn was dangerous for Sev. But he didn't stop, he didn't treat her any diffrent. Slytherin's protect their own. He was a true friend.

However, they both sense a change. They become more distant, they disagree more and Lily starts to see what her friends tell her to see. Slytherin's are dark wizards and death eaters and blood purists, ect. Slytherin's are bad. Lily begins to enter the clique, like Cady entered Regina George's.

Snapes Worst Memory was the straw that broke the camels back. It was the final tether. The smile Lily had tried to hide, when she watched then Mauraders was a betrayal in its own. Mudblood may have cut the final string, but Lily wasn't the one hanging onto it.

Lily has officially entered the clique. This is even seen when she teases him about washing his pants. Afterwards, Sev realizes that thier friendship, one that he'd held onto for so long has died. It's a stab in the back, when she defends the Mauraders actions.

It's over.

I feel like when Lily truly realizes this, it's a massive wake up call. Like Cady she realizes she doesn't like the person she's becoming. However, she doesn't reach out to Snape. She's too ashamed, to prideful and in her mind, too late. But she does her best to become who she really is. She matures and grows up, but she never forgets what made her do so.

This is the Lily, the Mauraders and McGonagall talk about, this is the Lily Severus Snape became friends with. This is the Lily that James Potter falls in love with. This is the Lily that sacrifices herself for her son.
