It's no longer Halloween where I live, but anyway: Dictionary.com (of all places) had a contest guest-judged by my childhood hero, R.L. Stine. It was to write the first 50 words of a story involving a haunted house.

Sadly, neither of my entries won, but I thought I'd post them here just for fun.

Entry #1:

"Those who enter Strongmore Manor will haunt its halls forever."

I can vouch for that. I sneaked in for a dare in 1986, becoming the lucky thirteenth victim of Gregor Strongmore's curse.

I watch as another group of kids creep through the door. As if this place wasn't crowded enough.

Entry #2:

Steven could tolerate his roommates at first. The piercing screams, slamming doors and visions of hanged bodies were a small price to pay for buying a Victorian mansion so cheaply.

Then they took his cookies.

The cookies CLEARLY labeled with HIS name.

"That's it!" he screamed. "I'm calling an exorcist!"

When I was a kid I won second prize in a “Goosebumps” writing contest! #(There was one “grand prize” winner + 25 “first prize” winners + 50 “second prize” winners. So I was in the top 76.) #It was actually kind of the opposite of this. They gave you the opening (plus some prompts to include) and you had to write the rest. #Anyway that's how I got a signed copy of R.L. Stine's autobiography and it's still one of my prized possessions.

The Asker’s Studio™️ is in session!

The other day, we were discussing that the latest batch of prompts that took up residence in my head did not pan out (after I passed them on to you)

It got me to thinking about the whole concept of prompts in general.

As one of the laziest writers on this platform, I will offer that without prompts, my time is whiled away making up prompts for others, rather than trying to conjure original ideas for myself. I require them to produce content (I actually have an active WIP for the first time in 5 months)

Writers are constantly soliciting for prompts and successfully bringing them to fruition.

Does this need/desire for prompts translate the same way for an artist? Do they offer a inspiration or do they create restraints?

When I offer a prompt to a fellow writer, there is usually the open-ended stipulation that the prompt is merely an idea. I like the author to keep in mind that this is a very general concept, they are free to run with it in any direction. Do you feel this freedom as an artist?

First of all, thank you so much @beebee-76, that once again I am the subject of The Asker’s Studio™️ 🥰

I was so happy to read that you have a wip again and you are writing something! 

So about your question:

Do they (prompts) offer a inspiration or do they create restraints?

Well... for me, they are restraints, but in a good way! 

Nowadays, I often have minimal time to draw. And sometimes I have this... IDK what to call, but with me, the case is this nowadays: as my free time is limited, when I have one or two hours just for myself (I mean to create anything), sometimes I'm unable to do anything because I can't decide what I want to do! (does this makes any sense?...)

And if a prompt came to me in a situation like that, suddenly, I don't need to think about what I should do. I know that there is somebody out there with an idea, and the best thing I can do to make them happy is to work on that - so that makes me happy after all.

But there is the bad part - sometimes I can't make it happen. I'm a human, after all. In most cases, my skills are not good enough to create the requested image. I usually recognize that after twenty minutes, and then I stop working on them. 

Maybe that's selfish. But I don't want to make a half job or do work I'm not proud of. And now, I recognize where I fail, and I don't go there. 

And again. because I don't have that much free time, sadly I must select as well. I would love to make everybody idea's, but I can't. 

The request poll I make on my discord is a fun way to select and reduce those ideas - so I don't drown in them 🤭 I got too many ideas myself 🤭 

(BTW, if I knew English better... I would love to write and take prompts as a writer. But it's so hard for me to write a story in English, and I need someone else who put hard work into my stuff to be readable to others, so... that's a bummer. But if it would be my mother language... I would be unstoppable 🤭 Thankfully, everybody speaks in the language of art 🤭🥰)

Or rather, one who was never meant to be someone worth calling?

There is something... moving, about other bugs finding their purpose. Something that made their strokes deliberate.

Your movements are not random either, but what is it that moves you?

Perhaps it's wanting to get that small creature out of your path, swinging your nail at it. And once you've wandered enough, what moves you is the need to rest, to sit, recover.

You get up, you're moved somewhere, but you'll only find out once you get there.

Overwatch + Marvel/Ghost Rider writing prompt

Jack Morrison becomes Ghost Rider.

What happens is that the Swiss HQ explodes like canon.

The difference?

Gabriel Reyes actually dies. Jack ends up finding his body and is devastated. But who else shows up but Mephisto in the guise of a ‘familiar face’ (whose face? Who knows. Jack just knows it’s not actually them). And so, a deal is struck: Jack becomes the spirit of vengeance in exchange for Gabriel’s life. The catch? Gabriel’s ‘condition’ via Moira becomes even worse, as well as making him more easily angered and sadistic (can also cause him to hate Jack, just for the angst).

Meanwhile, Jack becomes Ghost Rider for a bit. He only stops when he realizes what his deal has actually done to Gabe. So while saving the day as Soldier 76, he is also looking for a way to help Gabe and potentially reverse the deal he made with Mephisto to get his soul back (although he is less inclined to do that, seeing it as ‘punishment’)

This is also why he always wears his visor, to stop himself from transforming into Ghost Rider via eye contact with ‘evil’. Still doesn’t stop Zarathos (aka, the demon that is tied to the Ghost Rider) from speaking to Jack and trying to convince him to return to being Ghost Rider. It’s also why he tries to stay away from the other Overwatch operatives when the group reforms, as he doesn’t want to risk having the Ghost Rider come out while near them.
