“Do you want to feel more loved by God in your day to day life?

This might be mushy for some of us, but let us never forget that God is multifaceted in his nature and character. This is but one side of him, an often unknown side.

Implications of His care: We are told in scripture many times that we are held by God. There is a peace that comes when we are reminded, I am in God's hands. He is wise and He is loving and He is perfectly on time. He is not indifferent about the anxieties I carry. He cares. He's going to take care of me.

He’s going to plan my life and guide me. And that guidance is informed by his love, planned in his wisdom, and timed in his sovereignty. God does not comfort us from afar, but nearness.

Psalm 27:10 Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close.

Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Isaiah 41:13 For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

Psalm 63:8 My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

Where is my glasses?!

We have all heard the saying before. Someone cannot find their glasses only to realize they were on their head the whole time. Sometimes we do this with God. We are looking for him everywhere and not realizing he is closer than we think.

Lesson 040: Dealing with Disappointment

Genesis 40:23 - Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Joseph had dealt with so many trials and troubles in his young life. He was abandoned by his brothers and sold into slavery. He tried to make the best of his situation and live honorably for God. Yet he was falsely accused of a crime and thrown into prison.

Despite all this, Joseph was still faithful to God and believed he would be delivered. Joseph must have been excited to hear the chief butler was restored to his former position.

Let’s read together Genesis 40:1-13.

The chief butler did not put in a good word to Pharaoh for Joseph. The chief butler actually forgot about Joseph for two years.

Joseph must have been very discouraged during that time. Perhaps he thought God was going to deliver him using the chief butler, but nothing happened for two years.

Let’s read together Proverbs 3:5; Psalm 42:11; and Colossians 3:23-24.

Despite this setback, Joseph still believed in God. Joseph knew God did not forsake him. God blessed Joseph when he was in Potiphar’s household. God even blessed Joseph in prison.

Let’s read together Psalm 27:14 and Galatians 6:9.

Just like Joseph, we need to learn how to wait on the Lord.

“God is good. But what does that mean—that God is good? The more I studied this word in the Bible, the more one central concept seemed to jump out: God’s goodness conveys His generosity. His goodness means far more than His generosity, but it certainly includes His infinitely generous attitude toward us. By nature, He longs to bring joy and blessing to all His creatures. The Bible repeatedly presents goodness as a core quality of our Lord, and I wanted to share just 23 of those occasions. Every September, my friend Marc Hong, a professor at Louisville Seminary, hosts Psalmtember. He invites you to join in, too!

Think "Inktober," but in September and with a spiritual focus — and with any art form welcome, from drawing to poetry to photography and beyond. There's also no pressure to create something for every day — do as many or as few as you like.

Here's Marc's description of this artistic event:

Each year, I love to spend a month making art inspired by the Psalms. There are 30 days in September, meaning that I can evenly divide up the 150 Psalms into 5 sets of 30. So, if I do this for 5 years, I will have made art with all of the Psalms. Join me! The prompt list is in the image [as well as below the readmore]. But other words may stand out to you! Or you may try to make art that represents the wholeness of the Psalm. I encourage you to read the text of the whole Psalm each day, consider what emotions it stirs up in you, choose a medium that speaks to you, and make some art! Folks have painted, used ink, drawn with colored pencils, taken photographs, written haikus, and much more. Choose what stirs delight in you!

1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, But the mouth of fools gush out folly. 3 The LORD's eyes are everywhere, Keeping watch on the evil and the good. 4 A gentle tongue is a tree of life, But deceit in it crushes the spirit. 5 A fool despises his father's correction, But he who heeds reproof shows prudence. 6 In the house of the righteous is much treasure, But the income of the wicked brings trouble. 7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge; Not so with the heart of fools. 8 The sacrifice made by the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But the prayer of the upright is his delight. 9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But he loves him who follows after righteousness. 10 There is stern discipline for one who forsakes the way: Whoever hates reproof shall die. 11 She'ol and Avaddon are before the LORD -- How much more then the hearts of the children of men!
