Funny that we shot at the back of this somewhat famous property on Lake Minnetonka. Right now there's a big struggle to chop this old estate into pieces so that two McMansions can be built on it instead of one. // This property is in Orono, Minnesota where there has been a lot of public land going to special interests. What does that mean? It means that the public is losing their land or use of their land. It means individuals and organizations are gaining assets in their private portfolios and use of public land without the public even knowing about it. // So I started a nonprofit to help public awareness of this trend. Mustangs and…Burning Man?

A new herd of wild horses is descending on the Black Rock Desert for 2022’s Burning Man festival.

The Wild Horses of the American West project is rounding up more than a dozen life-size sculptures from local and international artists to bring awareness to environmental concerns surrounding the West’s wild horses.

“Everyone loves horses. Wild horses are beautiful,” said organizer Adrian Landon. “But the bottom line is they need to be managed.”

Landon stated, "the complexity and diversity of this project metaphorically reflects the many facets of the issue itself, and emphasizes the natural beauty, grace and majesty of horses. Stetson said, "the sculptures materialize the importance for us to find swift and proactive common ground and solutions that will keep sustainable numbers of healthy wild horses on the range and in balance with the ecosystem."

[One of the artists,] a 34-year Air Force veteran and Reno native uses art as a form of therapy. He compiled his piece from all found materials, either from the desert or dumpster diving in Reno.

“I really discovered making things helps my demons inside,” he said. “I enjoy going and finding: the hunt for the scrap metal, then the build.”

He describes his horse as hungry, pregnant and kind of skeletal. He worries that too many horses in the desert will lead to real-life versions of his sculpture.

“They’re everywhere now. It used to be a rare treat and rarity to see them. Now, you drive around every day and see them,” he said. “I love them, but it’s a lot.”

Not all of this damage was from the rain and snow... These atmospheric rivers brought an unusual amount of precipitation to the Eastern Sierra. We welcome this as it will help fill reservoirs and nourish vegetation. Unfortunately, many roads, especially non-paved surfaces, have seen extensive damage from flooding and washouts. There is resource damage in the Tablelands from drivers creating their own paths to avoid driving over these rutted and flooded areas. In the Eastern Sierra, sagebrush, grasses, and other native plants can take years, sometimes decades, to grow to a small height. We need your help in caring for these areas. If a road looks too damaged to drive on, it is best to go back and recreate elsewhere. Do not create new roads or expand current ones. Pic 1: Notice the deep washouts right of the red line. Everything to the left of the line is a recently formed impact. Multiple drivers have driven over vegetation in order to avoid the ruts. Pic 2: In order to access dispersed camping in the Tablelands, multiple drivers avoided the flooded road and created their own. Vehicle tracks are well over 100 meters in length, and many plants and vegetation were squashed.
