this fic is my baby that i expect mmm maybe 3 people to read, but it is gonna be my next longfic after WINRN! Zhuzhi-lang finds Luo Binghe as a child and watches over him in secret. when Luo Binghe leaves for Cang Qiong, Zhuzhi-lang finds a way to assume a human shape and follow him so that he can continue to protect his cousin--only to end up accepted onto the mountain under Yue Qingyuan, the man who defeated and sealed his uncle. thus proceeds many shenanigans, disciple!Shen Yuan, Qijiu reconciliation, and Qiong Ding Peak slowly acclimated to their new martial brother who keeps unhinging his jaw to eat rats.

It is on one of these ventures, letting himself drift, half-asleep, along the silty bottom of the Luo River, that Zhuzhi-lang finds a new purpose in his life.  He finds it when it crashes into him, in fact. A little body drops like a stone into the water, a tiny dark mass that Zhuzhi-lang thinks at first to be a large fish or a stray dog. Then the little body starts to flail in the water, dark hair fanning out and short limbs waving. A child.  Zhuzhi-lang is not a creature often moved to kindness. He saves his empathy sparingly, for the person who most deserves it in the world. But he is heartsick and monstrous in the river, and this creature is so small. He cannot free Junshang from his bindings, but he can save the life of this little thing.  He catches them around the chest, secures a grip with slick-scaled hands, and tosses them from the water onto the shore. They roll and curl up into a tiny dark lump, coughing up river water. There are more human children on the bank. Scruffy and scrawny but bigger than the one Zhuzhi-lang has fished out of the river. They are holding sticks, and there are thin lash marks on the pale arms of the child.  Seeing the child miraculously returned to the river bank, now pushing themselves onto hands and knees, one of the others with a stick scowls and approaches. “Hey, the dog’s been washed up. Push him again and maybe—”  Zhuzhi-lang pulls himself up onto the riverbank behind the child. He uses his arms to heave up his tail, a sheet of dark hair turned lank curtain by the water. The child he fished from the river is too busy coughing and sputtering on the ground to look around for its saviour.  The children in front of him, though, get the full view of this form. One of them whimpers. Zhuzhi-lang catches the sudden scent of urine on the wind.  He hisses, baring sharp fangs, and the children flee with shrill screams.  The half-drowned child finishes expelling water from their lungs and rolls over. Zhuzhi-lang lowers himself back down to lay flat on the ground when the other children run away, but he knows how he looks. Without Junshang’s blood keeping him stabilized and humanoid, he is a monstrosity. He expects this child, too, to scream demon and run when they realize what, exactly, has saved them from the icy Luo river.  Then large, dark eyes blink up at him. Painfully familiar eyes, in a painfully familiar small face.  The child freezes. Zhuzhi-lang freezes right back, as much from the shock of that face in miniature as for the child’s comfort. They both lay there, on the banks of the river, for a long minute, watching each other.  The child with Junshang’s eyes and Young Mistress Su’s face gingerly pulls themselves off of the ground. They kneel in the dirt in front of him. “A river monster…?” The child asks.

An au where everything is the same, but SQQ is a vampire

An mpreg fic where the demons are the ones pregnant for once (I have scenes for this already written). Contains a sequel idea where Bingqiu’s daughter ends up meeting Bingge

It turns out that all of the Shen siblings are anime-esque protagonists and the three left in his old world realize SY transmigrated and use magic to track him down and reunite

SY gets sent back to his old world and LBH comes to get him, hilarity and angst ensue.

Og!MBJ swaps places with the svsss version and is very confused. Leads into a sequel where pre-transmigration versions of SQQ and SQH are kidnapped and effectively seduced by the PIDW boys

My take on an A/B/O au

LBH tries to become Bingpup to get closer to SQQ post abyss, becomes a giant wolf instead. He still gets adopted and an identity reveal ensues

for the fan fic trope thing- how do you feel about body swap or transmigration aus??

Body swap: I’m going to say C. I think it’s a funny plot device for comedy (or the occasional angst!), but I can’t see myself getting invested in longform bodyswap shenanigans. I’ve recently translated an angsty xiyao comic about exactly this though, so it can definitely be compelling! But I guess I wouldn’t go looking for it.

Transmigration AU: depends. If you mean specifically a reader ending up in the novel a la Shen Yuan? Definitely a D, because the reader would be effectively an OC and I have no interest in them. However, I’ve read several excellent svsss qijiu fics in which one of the characters transmigrates into a past or alternate version of themselves and those are always really good!? I’m not sure if I’ve read any xiyao ones… I suppose it’s not my favorite plot device in a mdzs context because it feels so eminently svsss (which is not a bad thing! But the vibes are different) So, overall, I guess that makes it a C!

Shen Jiu needs to be possessive about Yue Qingyuan. After they are no longer children, if he even gets a whiff of how it feels like to be with Yue Qingyuan, I bet my life on it that he will NEVER LET HIM GO. He would rather suffocate himself and his qi-ge than tolerate anyone else even seemingly wishing to break them apart. He will destroy those people who try to do so. Pretty sure he would have wanted to raze CQMS to the ground if he found out what it did to his beloved Yue Qi. Remember his thoughts when he found out that YQY was alive. He thought to himself that he would have preferred him dead than deciding to abandon him. While I don't believe that's what he wants truly coz he did try to push YQY away in PIDW in order to save him, SJ definitely would be very protective and possessive of him. He would be drinking vinegar in gallons every time he perceives someone getting too close to the sect leader.

what would your qijiu baby shen yuan omegaverse au look like in a world where YQY came back for sj in time/already told him the truth about Xuan Su years ago? Im so sorry but the concept of qijiu baby sy just has its hooks deep in my heart...

So I’ve already started writing a version of this where they reunite at the IAC but SJ assumes yqy was kept at CQMS because of his omega status (not completely wrong but one of the factors) and is more understanding of it. Their teen romance is met with the barrier of everyone around them caring too much about impropriety so they sneak around and eventully get together organically. It helps that they are immediately marked down as each others heat/rut partners. Originally they planned on marrying right before their peak lord ascension but the sect pushes it until afterwards for the optics of two peak lords being this united blah blah blah

In this version, I’m certain SY would be raised to be a QDP disciple because SQQ is going to make sure his spawn inherits the most power possible. Also he can be as terrible to his own disciples without SY’s soft heart getting in the way. However, being the nerd he is, SY spends as much times on QJP as he can get away with, rifling through the bestiaries that just can’t be found on CQMS. It becomes clear to QiJiu that this kid is Not gonna wanna be sect leader and it's a well worn argument between them.

(alternatively in the world of the father oh father fic he'd joing QJP because SJ is trying very hard to impress him and worm his way into his affections without having QDP poison SY against him.)

Binghe still joins under QJP and everything goes like it normally would until SY realizes he missed the protagonist joining the sect and suddenly pivots to spending 75% of his time there. SQQ is pleased and suspicious of this in turn until he realizes SY has taken LBH on as a pet project.

(there's a furtive discussion between qijiu that they should have let SY keep at least one of the injured monsters he's brought over the years 'this is your fault qi-ge' 'xiao jiu i'm allergic-' 'then die!')

meanwhile binghe is on his very best behavior trying to win over his in-laws. I haven't decided, but there's no abyss arc here some other shenanigans happen as a result of SY and SQH figuring each other out years before.

About that “shen yuan transmigrates into lbh’s body”

(the comic that started it)

Shen yuan transmigrates into pidw, but into luo binghe instead of shen qingqiu

Ofc the system forces him to go through the torment which was canonically put on lbh. But he’s very bitchy about it

He also Observes the sect and his shizun more closely and starts to figure some things out. He sets a few things off, e.g. liu qingge doesn’t die, sqq isn’t accused of making a move on ning yingying, lbh doesn’t get as bad the treatment as he would in canon etc.

But all in all, he’s still put through a lot of stress and struggle, and can’t avoid being thrown into the abyss :’) At some point he snaps and charges at some random demon he got into a fight with, yelling “YOU CAN’T KILL ME I’M THE PROTAGONIST” with bloodshot eyes and a mad smile, while his opponent can only go “What the FUCK are you talking about” and retreat to reevaluate if it’s worth messing with that obviously insane but strong weirdo

Anyway there’s a plot twist

Was it the error in the system? Or is it that the protagonist halo doesn’t encompass just lbh’s body but also his soul?

Turns out that real luo binghe is still there

When sy was yeeted into his body, lbh just got pushed to the back instead of disappearing or getting transmigrated somewhere else. Firstly he was very hateful towards yet another person who seemed to appear only to torment him (he was already in the sect and suffered a bit from sqq’s treatment when the transmigration happened). But after a while of observing shen yuan he got curious, the guy didn’t seem like a bad person even though lbh didn’t understand a lot of what he talked about. He also seemed to stand up for him? And for some unknown reason knew about him? Although lbh was still suspicious, it did make him feel warm inside sometimes

Anyway the dream demon was the first to discover lbh. They talked without shen yuan knowing and the demon offered to teach lbh in private. Sy didn’t understand why the plot with the dream demon didn’t happen and the system was ok with it but oh well whatever. Maybe it was for the better, maybe that meant that he could avoid even more plot points? Like the abyss??? 

While sy was happily oblivious lbh learnt and gained strength, soon to be able to overpower sy and take his body back. But he didn’t do it quite yet

Until they’re thrown into the abyss and sy seems to be Not Taking It Very Well

Wait no, it’s the original lbh??? shit shit shit i’m fucked, i mean, i was already fucked by the novel but now i’m REALLY fucked shitshitshit

Anyway they work things out in order to survive, there are many shenanigans along the way and switching who’s in control which from a 3rd person’s pov looks like the guy is straight up nuts

At some point shen yuan is taken out from lbh’s body into another vessel, e.g. the plant one or something else later on, maybe some demon who was sentenced to death, idk possibilities man. More shenanigans and misunderstandings ensue inspired by the novel’s events

Happy end ofc, side couples like moshang or qijiu get together, no one dies because i say so (except maybe that one demon for his body, rip)

scum villain anon, if you're looking for anything where shen jiu and shen yuan are the same person, i'd totally recommend Third Time's the Charm by Divinely_Uninspired. it's bingjiu and bashes heavily on qijiu, but it's very satisfying. if you want something fluffier, Parenting Shenanigans ft. Shen Yuan by jayfeather63 is also good. pride is not the word I'm looking for by Tossawary and Bros before... well everything I guess by Icannotthinkofapenname are nice but more sqh centric tho. have fun!

Why do you ship liushen? Is that couple your favorite side couple (non-canon) from all of mxtx works? [Compare to, for example : beefleaf (shi qingxuan/ke xuan), xiyao (lan xichen/meng yao), fengqing (feng xin/mu qing), etc]

Oh, good questions. So, first: I haven't read TGCF (yet), so I can't comment on beefleaf and fengqing. It's on my list, and I do love a good examination of belief and godhood, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

Second: My favorite non-canon couple in an MXTX work is probably Qijiu, followed by that rarest of trios, Yue Qingyuan/Shen Qingqiu/Liu Qingge. Then Liushen, then 3zun, nielan and xiyao.

Part of the reason they're ordered this way is because I'm interpreting "favorite" in this case as "most likely to read and write fic for." As I am actively writing fic for the first two, they get ranked higher, but I do enjoy the others a lot!

Okay, on to the main question:

Liushen hits a few fun shipping buttons for me. A lot of my ships look something like: intelligent and unconventional wizard/engineer meets a steadfast paladin (who maybe has some issues with rigid thinking) and then they enable each other in both fantastic and terrible ways, probably while at least one of them is in denial about or suppressing their feelings.

You might notice that that describes pretty much every ship I listed, plus like. wangxian, stevetony, and a few other things you can find in my fandom history if you go back far enough. weilan shifts only slightly to the side, because Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan switch off which of them is playing which role based on their circumstances.

So, what makes Liushen stand out? Trope-wise, I love enemies to friends to lovers almost as much as I love friends to lovers. I'm a sucker for life debts changing a character's perspective. And a romance among peers? Comrades in arms? Sparring practice and mutual attempts to rescue each other???? Amazing, fantastic, give me more.

Plus, it's cute! The fan thing is cute. The way they're both effectively monster geeks is cute, and lends itself to some great teamwork potential. The mix of fighting styles is excellent. Shen Yuan going "wow, Liu Qingge is the most beautiful man in the world and possibly all of history, it's unbelievable how beautiful he is" and then "hm? My sexuality? Oh, I'm 100% straight" is hilarious to me. Liu Qingge's journey of self discovery and the idea that maybe he wants more in his life than constant training is something I find really personally fulfilling, too, and when they come together there's a lot of opportunity for shenanigans as well as the romance.

Some of it, too, is about unrealized potential: That is, after all, the main reason I will write fic of anything, but these two are especially good at that potential part. Shen Yuan doing his best to save Liu Qingge even though he has no idea what he's doing, just because he thinks Liu Qingge doesn't deserve to die for making the mistake of thinking he has to be alone. Liu Qingge's relentless attempts to reclaim SQQ's body so he can at least have a decent burial. That moment near the end when SQQ says, "I asked you because I trusted you."

It's a very good ship.
