JP Morgan’s Private Pullman Railcar,

Almost a hundred years ago, there were those who could outfit a private railcar the same way some today outfit private jets.

This particular railcar, a 1925 Pullman, was the private car of financier J.P. Morgan Jr. Very few ever had the opportunity to travel like this, but you can see the obvious benefits it offered while avoiding the early roads or attempting to travel long distances in a Model T Ford.

This masterpiece of railcar craftsmanship was completed in May of 1925 and it was named ERIE 400. The elegant private car is 85’ long and boasts an open platform, an observation room, four large bedroom suites, private baths, a dining room, full kitchen and crew quarters.

hi do you take requests for id that arent actually posts? im watching the x files and i Think the train car that gets decoupled is from the pioneer zephyr family of trains, but im not sure.

My boy... that is a Budd Company - RDC-2

If I've ever seen one.

RDC stands for Rail Diesel Car. That means it can move around on its own. Presumably it's being used as a railcar here cause it looks like one and it can control itself for whatever tomfoolery happens in the show. Curiously the windows have been plated over. I guess they did that for the show. As for the Pioneer Zephyr connection... they were made by the same company! Everything Budd got their hands on was made of stainless steel though. I hesitate to call them related. Zephyrs have a dedicated power car and the earlier ones have semi-permanently coupled cars. The RDCs are easier to work with… every car is a power car so you can just slap more on if need be.

(Side tangent, The Pioneer Zephyr is just the first one made. Burlington Route named all their trainsets of that style the [X] Zephyr. Really the Zephyrs deserve their own post, they're great fun!)

Former home of railfan, photographer, and author, Lucius Beebe, the Amtrak certified luxurious private railcar, the Virginia City, is currently for sale (early 2024). Price comparable to a nice Bay Area home. If I don't win the Powerball this week, I hope that whoever purchases it keeps tagging the tail of Amtrak trains with it!

Serendipitously a few Sothern Pacific railfan videos have popped up on YT, featuring the Virginia City

GWR (Great Western Railway) UK - Diesel Railcar Unit in service from 1934 to 1962 fitted with an AEC 6-Cylinder Diesel Engine of 130Bhp provided a max speed of 80 Mph. 36 units were built and only 3 now survive. The lower image shows a preserved car at the York Railway Museum....
