Chris talking about his synaesthesia and seeing the colour of music
a snippet of an interview Chris did with a German ESC channel about a month ago, translated from German into English (because I thought it was pretty fascinating what Chris had to say, and hoped you all would enjoy reading about it as well)
Benny: Chris, you are a synaesthete. What does Blood and Glitter look like to you? And is there a Eurovision song that looks particularly noticable?
Chris: So, you know … Synaesthesia is the connection of senses that normally do not belong together, right? Someone who can taste colours, for example. So they are seeing a colour and are having a certain taste in their mouth. In my case it's the ear that is connected to the eye, and it only works in this direction. So when I'm hearing a certain note, I see a specific colour.
You can picture it like an instagram filter, when everything gets colourised in a certain way, and all contours seem to be glowing in that colour. A little bit like a real-time light show. I'm pretty good at repressing it, though, and it also doesn't happen when I'm tired and the brain is trying to save resources. But when I allow it to happen then I'm seeing this aura. It has nothing to do with how a song feels to me, though, so the colour is not determined by the feeling that I have. It's really just a physical thing. Sounds are wave lengths. So you have twelve semitones, and then everything repeats itself, twice as high, twice as deep, and so on. So these wave lengths are all connected to a certain colour. C, for example, always has a blue shade to me, and when it goes deeper, to an A, it becomes purple. So, Blood and Glitter is written in A minor, and especially with the guitar riff in the beginning, everything gets stained in a purple tone. So it's not blood and gold at all, if we would consider gold to be a proper colour.
Now the thing is, it's important to me that our lightshow matches the colours that I'm seeing, and I can work quite well with red and purple. If it's too complementary, like red and green for example, that doesn't work well for me. Or if a song goes too far into the direction of green, then I'm having trouble handling it, unless the song symbolises a certain inner conflict, because I simply don't like green as a light colour. Even though I quite like it as the colour of the forest, where it is more muted.
It's getting pretty nerdy here, as you may notice. So the thing is that the clearer the information is, the more distinct will be the colour that I'm seeing. When I'm hearing simply a pure sinusoidal tone, then the colour is very clear. When more harmonies come together, everything will get muddier. Like when you mix all colours together and it becomes brown – or white when you're mixing light. That's also one of the reasons why I rarely like jazz when it becomes too atonal. Because with all those different sevenths and ninths in jazz chords you have a lot of friction, and then it just becomes very muddy and cold colour-wise, like there's no clear colour information anymore, and it's all just grey. So I cannot really feel jazz emotionally. Or when you have a song with a lot of harmonies and transpositions, then it can also change during one song.
But with the other Eurovision songs I haven't really paid any attention to their colours yet, because it is something that is so normal to me that I'm not analysing it really. I won't be thinking: Oh, it's getting blue now! It's just as normal to me as when you open your mouth and there is sound coming out of it, I also wouldn't be paying any attention to that.
Peter: What about classical music?
Chris: Well, when you're talking about the proper classical period here – also including the Romantic, the neoclassical or the baroque era, so everything that is harmoniously precise, and which works diatonically in major and minor keys – here it is quite similar to pop music, it's very comprehensible. When it gets too modern however, like the Schoenberg school, twelve-tone technique, all that, or the whole expressionism, then it's just like jazz with classical instruments, so that also doesn't work for me. Because then the colours are just jarring, you know? It's not only weird for the ear, it's also hurting the eye. But I do love classical music. I listen to a lot of classical music, I love movie scores, the cello was my first instrument, and I'm still playing it. I have basically made classical music before I even knew that something like pop music existed.
Benny: What a fascinating topic, really! We could probably fill a whole show with that if we wanted. Thank you for the answer.
Chris: Oh, sorry, if I may nerd around some more, just one thing. When I'm listening to a certain symphony or whatever, and I feel like the colour-mood does not match what I'm hearing, then I have this here in the whole house [takes a remote control] … all the light bulbs are connected with this Philips hue system, so whatever lamp I need to change, I can adjust it, until I feel like this matches the music that I'm currently listening to better.
Benny: So today the mood goes more into the direction of pink?
Chris: For me it's red, maybe the screen messes it up. But that was really just because of Blood and Glitter, that made me go: Let's do a red light show today.

Some more MMM Trio Facts! :33
__________________________
Mello:
Mello was the one who taught Matt how to play the guitar, and then later Matt did the rest
Listens to Malice Mizer, P!ATD, PTV and MCR because of Matt, Jazz/Classical Music, The All-American Rejects, and Lady Gaga (don’t ask.)
(Obviously) has a really bad addiction to eating chocolate. Give him any sort of chocolate, this guy will CHOW IT DOWN 🔥
Miyu paints his nails black whenever he’s to lazy to do it (Sometimes asks matt to do it— but.. rarely, since Matt’s hands are really shakey)
Learned how to style and braid hair from miyu, so Miyu frequently asks for help whenever she needs a extra hand
This guys has his moments, but he is real cold. Even around Matt and Miyu, but even so— he ends up participating in whatever they do outside the Kira case, just a small… small soft spot for these two (Mostly Matt)
Mello normally tries ways to calm his anger down. Ever since he found out Miyu has been afraid of him at times from Matt— with just a few pushes, he slowly attempts to learn how to manage his anger
He is a massive older brother model for Miyu. (She never told him, but if she did. He would honestly freeze for a second to process— he would be warmed, but he doesn’t show it)
Forces Matt sometimes to wear actual fitting clothes whenever they go out (he thinks his style sucks, Miyu helps out aswell)
Learned how to cook so he could feed two big backs in the apartment
The guy who kept track of the chores and responsibilities equally between the trio.
He’s smart, and in a way— good with his words. So he’s the go to guy to listen to your problems when he’s not in a bad mood himself. Good, but really blunt— If you’re in the wrong, he won’t hesitate to point it out
Absolutely loves hot tea or coffee in the morning
Before, he hated his burnt scar so much he would hide it— but once he got used to it, he realized how badass it looked
Speaks German and Dutch
Matt:
Definitely listen to vocaloid
Had a lot of time on his hands before he worked with mello. And the result of that is he would watch different kinds of anime whenever he’s bored
Knows the lyrics and correct pronunciation to certain anime OP’s (he won’t stop singing JJBA openings)
Would sometimes do air guitar gestures whenever he’s listening to something
The guy who comforted mello and stuff about his scar
Would sometimes mix up his and Mello’s clothes (somehow)
Give this guy a dress, he would wear it no problem. He got used to it after Miyu forced him couple of times
Has the most contagious laugh (along with Miyu). Make him laugh, mello and or Miyu would let out a few chuckles and maybe even laugh alongside him
Has the worst but best humor ever
Says the most diabolical, jaw dropping jokes ever
He knows how to adapt into social situations despite his shit social life
The type of guy to avoid conflict
Whenever he takes his goggles off his vision gets woozy for a minute before he’s good
Matt was the guy who tried to ease the conflict between mello and near (didn’t exactly work)
‘Cigarettes >>>> Vapes’ guy
Speaks German, Spanish, and French
Miyu:
listens to the millionaires, Ayesha erotica, lady Gaga, ke$ha, etc.
Goes crazy for leopard, cheetah, and zebra print clothing
Sassy, really sassy.
Has to read a Misa Amane magazine atleast every single week or day, even if she has to go through the same one
The type of girl to crush on another girl immediately if they are attractive
Goes out partying whenever she’s not busy with the kira case
She sort of decreased in IQ, given how long it’s been since she last focused on her studies and focused on her modeling career
Not really amazing with words, but good with comforting touch
Has the most loudest laugh ever
The one who forced Matt and mello to do a ‘girls sleepover’ and wear hello kitty pajamas one night (they won’t admit that it was fun)
Whenever there’s a conflict between the trio, she locks herself in the bathroom and cuddles her knees against her chest on-top of the toilet
Oftenly visits her adopted family without mello and Matt knowing, she uses the ‘model career things’ as a decoy
(IN A AU WHERE THE MMM TRIO LIVES) she eventually introduces her family to mello and Matt, they are iffy but eventually warm up
sleeps on the couch in the apartment
The helping hand whenever they need to spy on someone (Like how Matt goes out to spy on Mogi and Misa)
Speaks Spanish, Japanese, German, and French (she forgot how to speak a few phrases in German and French)
ADDITIONAL FACTS:
Miyu and Matt will literally yell/sing whenever a song they both know goes on
They sometimes have karaoke night. (One time mello sang, it was pretty good tbh— Matt never forgot it, and Miyu secretly recorded it and has it saved in her phone)
While watching horror movies, Miyu has to sit in the middle so she could have something to hug when she’s scared. (Also prevents mellodramattic make out sessions😔😔😔)
Miyu and Matt compete a lot in video games
Mello sits there confused on how to play the game, so sometimes he wins unintentionally whenever they play smash bros
They played roblox together. Accessed to voice chat, and the result: mello has 12 banned accounts, Miyu tries to keep it to a minimum so she doesn’t get banned, Matt just says the most diabolical things and somehow manages to not get banned
They did the ‘Blind, Dead, Mute’ cooking challenge because Miyu forced them too one time. It was the first time in forever since they heard mello laugh loudly one time (they want to do it again sometime to make that happen again)
Whenever mello and Matt have their moments, Miyu sits there, looking at a imaginable camera or someone around them and says: “these*****’s gay.”
Another roblox moment. Whenever they play a horror game— it’s always: Matt is the one who gets scared sometimes but is the one who does all the work, Miyu is the gal who hides or scream really loud whenever they get chased, mello somehow never gets scared and tries to help Matt out with the tasks/objectives in the game (he lets out a few chuckles in amusement at Matt and Miyu’s fear)
Whenever they go out to a grocery store, something always has to go bad

A5/02 Philips – Twen: Realism is the Score
Between 1961 and 1968, the magazine Twen produced a series of LP recordings in collaboration with the Philips record label. During this period, all editions of Twen were accompanied by LPs drawn from the realms of jazz, classical music, radio plays, world music, or pop. For the designs of his record covers, art director Willy Fleckhaus used Concrete Art by Karl Gerstner, Max Bill, and other dedicated graphic designers such as Heinz Edelmann and Günther Kieser. This now-forgotten series, comprising around 70 discs, is a masterful instance of the conjunction of music and graphic design. In collaboration with music archives and private collections, this rare series is reunited in its entirety and documented in this publication.
This volume is part of the Lars Müller A5 series, intended as a growing archive of graphic design. Each volume introduces outstanding personalities and important themes from the history of international graphic design, with numerous illustrations, essays, and interviews. A5 is a cooperation between the labor visuell in the design department at the Fachhochschule Düsseldorf and Lars Müller Publishers.

Sleeping Beauty Spring: "La Bella Dormente nel Bosco" ("The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood") (1922 Italian opera by Ottorino Respighi)
Tumblr media
Name any famous story, and it's almost certain to have been adapted as an opera, whether or not that opera is often performed. Here we find an Italian operatic Sleeping Beauty, with a libretto by Gian Bistolfi, and music by the renowned composer Ottorino Respighi, best known for his tone poems Fountains of Rome, Pines of Rome, and Roman Festivals. It was originally conceived and performed as a marionette opera, with the story enacted by puppets while the singers sang from offstage. While rarely performed today, it does have occasional revivals, some with singing actors performing the roles onstage as in any other opera, and others with marionettes. One complete sound recording is also commercially available, as is a filmed performance from the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari.
Divided into three acts, but fairly short at an hour and forty minutes long, this opera follows the familiar plot of the fairy tale, yet with interesting creative embellishments. Act I opens with an atmospheric nature scene where a nightingale, a cuckoo, and a chorus of frogs sing their evening songs, before the King and Queen's ambassador arrives in search of fairies to attend the newborn Princess's christening, and seven fairies heed his call. At the christening, the villainous Green Fairy curses the Princess to prick her finger at age twenty rather than fifteen or sixteen (some productions of Tchaikovky's ballet make the same change), and not to die, but to sleep forever. Twenty years later, in the old spinning woman's tower, the spindle itself is sentient and sings, as does a cat: the Princess dances a cheerful dance with the two of them, but when she pricks her finger, the spindle gloatingly reveals itself as an agent of the Green Fairy. The following scene begins comically, with pompous doctors trying to diagnose the sleeping Princess's "illness," but then gives way to lamentations by the King, the Queen, and their court. That is, until the kindly Blue Fairy arrives to put them all to sleep as well, and only now does she alter the curse so that it will break when the Princess receives "the kiss of love." In place of the traditional briars or thick forest surrounding the castle, giant spiders weave an enormous web around the castle to protect it.
Act III reveals an especially unusual and quirky change from traditional versions of the story. The Princess and her court have slept for three hundred years rather than just one century, and the action now takes place in the 1920s of the opera's premiere. The entourage of Prince Aprile (yes, his name means "April" – the libretto is full of springtime imagery) includes a club of rich Americans led by the comical "Mr. Dollar Cheque," who resolves to buy the sleeping Princess after they learn her story from a woodcutter. But Prince Aprile takes a more romantic approach and battles the last of the monstrous spiders, causing the web to fall away, and then wakes the Princess with a kiss. After the lovers sing a romantic duet, the newly awakened court joins the modern world in a playful dance finale, which starts as a minuet and ends as a foxtrot.
Respighi's music lacks any particularly "hummable" melodies, but its beauty stands out all the same, with a tone of shimmering fairy-tale Romanticism balanced here and there with moments of humor. The influence of many great Classical and Romantic composers can be heard, particularly from Wagner, but with a welcome lighter touch than the famous German composer brought to his operas. The "modern day" final act also includes passages of ragtime and jazz, which somehow never clash with the rest of the score's Romanticism.
Ultimately, this opera's blend of gossamer beauty and quirky playfulness give it a unique charm. Whether or not it's anyone's favorite opera, or anyone's definitive version of Sleeping Beauty, it most definitely deserves to be performed more often. At any rate, as both an opera lover and a fairy tale lover, I'm glad to have discovered it, and I plan to listen to it again before long.

KERRANG! - Review of the concert at the Velodrome, Berlin, 19.05.2001
Sunken below ground level, the only giveaway sign that something is rumbling underground is the venue’s corrugated iron roof that appears on the edge of Berlin like a frozen pond and the faint doof, doof of an industrial beat somewhere deep below. We’re not in Kansas anymore Toto. A 10,000-capacity racetrack arena, Rammstein couldn’t have chosen a more perfect venue to play two nights in their hometown to illustrate exactly why they’re undoubtedly the most important rock band ever to have come out of Germany. And no, The Scorpions don’t count because they were horseshit.
It begins — as all good metal shows rightfully should — with a spectacular entrance as a large pulsing red womb hovers above the stage before giving birth to each band member who then takes his position for the opening attack of ‘Mein Herz Brennt’. Utterly ludicrous of course, but totally appreciated. A few songs in, you can see why knee-jerk reactionaries have accused Rammstein of flirting with Nazism.Their entire aesthetic pilfers from Hitler’s most effective performance and propagandist techniques — grand, theatrical displays of power, hard-hitting marching rhythms, simple sloganeering, the ability to whip followers up into a frenzy and an over-rising sense of male superiority. It is, however, just harmless flirtation and politically Rammstein actually stand at the other end of the spectrum, ensuring they have more in common with the colorful, part-choreographed nihilism of Marilyn Manson or Slipknot, than any misguided knuckleheads with hidden agendas. ‘Links 2 3 4’, with its jack-boot stomping intro and war-like chorus is written directly for those who can’t get past the Übermensch imagery and who clearly have a problem with Germans displaying some rare humour. It’s a massive song in defense of the band and it works.
Nevertheless, taken at face value seeing Rammstein in front of 10-thousand drunk Germans, each with a fist raised and many a bad ape drape in close proximity, is a slightly disturbing and definitely uplifting experience, such is the devotion to this band.
As with new album ‘Mutter’, musically Rammstein aren’t doing anything that the likes of Depeche Mode, Laibach, ‘The Wall’-era Pink Floyd, early Ministry and Kraftwerk haven’t already covered, but the one thing that the critics seems to have missed is the irony and the gloriously gratuitous theatrics involved. While the flying jazz and pendulous prosthetic penises are a thing of the past, tonight there are enough pyrotechnics and moments of Phineas Barnum-style rabble-rousing to send Kiss to their long over-due retirement. And what a refreshing change it is to not have to deal with some pious American big-leaguer telling us that we’re the greatest before directing us to the merchandise stall on the way out.
Singer Till Lindemann, possessed with a voice perfect for B-movie voiceovers, is far too cool for banter when he could be strapping Roman candles to his feet, setting fire to himself and then singing an entire f**king song as his coat goes up in smoke. Which he does. More than once. Old favorite ‘Du hast’ and the more recent ‘Sonne’ (that’ll be the one that saw Rammstein dressed somewhat amusingly as pick axe-toting miner’s on Kerrang!’s video giveaway) are stripped of unnecessary fat to leave big, meaty foot-stompers with all the subtlety of a punch in the face — surely their desired effect — which they then char-grill with vast walls of flames and explosions that seemingly appear at eyebrow-threatening closeness to the band members.
Bizarrely, Rammstein choose to end it all with a roomy run through The Ramones ‘Pet Cemetery’, the one time that they truly stray away from the classically Teutonic rhythms that ensure the show stomps along in a hypnotic haze. They may be as German as two pounds of Bratwurst squeezed into a pair of Lederhosen but that’s where Rammstein’s real appeal lies — the cold, blunt tones of their mother tongue couldn’t have found a more suitable soundtrack in their sublime and regimented sound. Most of all though, they might just currently have the best stage show in the metal world. And that alone is reason enough to get into this unique band.

What head-cannons do you have for your ships? :3
Tumblr media
Count Dooku/Obi-Wan: I headcanon Dooku speaking German, it's his native tongue anyone who lives on Serreno speaks it. Yes, Obi-Wan knows it kind of...
Cad Bane/Padme Amidala: They both consider each other friends but Cad is hardly going to say that out loud, he's grateful for her trust as it's a rare gift to give him.
Vlad Masters/Danny Phantom: Vlad grew up speaking three languages Georgian, Russian, and English his mother was Georgian and his father was Russian and after they married they went to America where Vlad was born. Danny likes to hear Vlad speak other languages.
Hiei/Kuwabara: Hiei secretly likes to cuddle Eikichi Kuwabara's cat and Kuwabara pretends to not notice lol
Raphael/Oroku Saki: Saki won't admit that he is a lightweight when it comes to drinking- when Raph finds out he valiantly tries to not laugh but fails when drunken/cuddly Saki tells him he's not drunk.
Gabriel/ Marinette: Gabriel is self-aware he knows he's a mental wreck of a man on top of being an asshole but he's also somewhat aware of his wife playing him. Marinette knows for a fact his wife played with his feelings and isn't sure she should tell him that.
Wenreesa/Quenchy/Augustine: Augustine is a dom 100% and any partner he plays with (and boy does he have a long list lol) he takes care of. This is normal for him, and he is very against Doms who don't follow this, their jerks and he will kick them in the jewels.
Michelangelo/Tiger Claw: Mikey can actually drink like a boss, but he mostly keeps that hidden-surprising anyone who wants to drink him under the table which ends up in shenanigans lol
Alucard/Enrico Maxwell: Enrico and Alucard find a certain amount of solace in each other, Whatever scenario gets them together they realize very quickly that they don't want to let go selfishly wanting to spend more time knowing that eventually they will have to be enemies again eventually. They compromise and become frenemies with benefits lol
King Boo/Luigi: Boo just wants to cuddle his little green bean, but was too afraid to make a move so Luigi is forced to make the first move lol
Clockwork/Dan Phantom: Clockwork is still a little fucked up from his ex (Pariah Dark) but slowly Dan is healing those hurts. Clockwork is helping Dan bond with Jazz and Dani, giving them all a safe space in his tower to interact at first before they are all comfortable enough to hang out elsewhere.

Under the Radar: Jim Marks' Year-end List for 2023
Tumblr media
Samuel Leipold, Jürg Bucher, Lucca Lo Bianco
The stream of great new music is constant and impossible to keep up with. Inevitably, some of it goes largely unnoticed. My year-end list consists of releases that I really enjoyed but didn’t get around to writing about and haven’t seen reviewed elsewhere in English. They are presented in no particular order.
Samuel Leipold, Jürg Bucher, Lucca Lo Bianco — Ostro (Ezz-thetics)
This trio of clarinet, double bass, and guitar delivers atmospheric free jazz. Experimental without being confrontational (included is a choice Jimmy Giuffre cover), Ostro offers a rarely heard sound palette and consistently interesting arrangements.
Luis Ribeiro — A Invenção da Ficção (Porta Jazz)
The Porta Jazz label out of Portugal released fewer records than usual this year, perhaps a lagging effect of Covid. One standout is the debut by guitarist and composer Ribeiro, who leads a sextet with tenor and baritone saxophones in the front line. Love the eerie vocalization on the opening track. Space age and swinging.
Adrián Royo Trío — Pangea (Errabal Jazz)
youtube
This Spanish release initially caught my eye in the La Habitacion de Jazz blog because of the involvement of double bassist Manel Fortià. Strong original melodies and tight interplay make for a standout piano trio recording in a great year for piano trios.
Javier Burin — Escenarios (Los Años Luz Discos)
Another excellent but low-profile piano trio release this year. The assuredness and inventiveness of Argentinian Burin’s playing are the more remarkable given that he is only in his early twenties; check out especially the unlikely cover of “Tenor Madness.”
Marcus Eads — Pride of Ostego (self-released)
This Minnesotan has been putting out gentle Takoma-style guitar music for more than a decade. Strongly rooted in the rural midwestern landscape, his playing and homespun compositions call to mind back porches, canoe trips, and sitting by the fireside.
Scott Tuma — Nobody’s Music (Haha)
I was thrilled to stumble across this unheralded release recently by the Souled American alumnus and one of the architects of slowcore. Apparently first appearing last year on cassette, Nobody’s Music, coming six years after No Greener Grass, delivers more ambling and spindly acoustic guitar lines that seem to drip out of the instrument with the occasional accompaniment of what sounds like harmonica or accordion. Enchanting as always.
Mohamed Masmoudi — Villes Éternelles (Centre des Musiciens du Monde)
Canadian oud master Masmoudi creates a compelling blend of Arabic music and jazz in a percussion-less quartet also featuring clarinet, piano, and double bass. With top-notch musicianship and catchy tunes, the group shows how good world music fusion can sound.
Jorge Abadias — Camins (Underpool)
The Underpool label documents the lively Barcelona jazz scene. Its 2023 releases include this quartet date led by guitarist Abadias. His original post-bop (in the broad sense) compositions tend toward slower tempos, and fine soloing abounds.
Jakob Dreyer — Songs, Hymns, and Ballads Vol. 2 (self-released)
Another solid post-bop quartet recording featuring original compositions. Three U.S. musicians fill out German double bassist Dreyer’s quartet, and this second volume nicely complements Vol. 1 released last year.
Various Artists — You Better Mind: Southeastern Songs to Stop Cop City (self-released)
This project, spearheaded by the Magic Tuber String Band (who also released the outstanding Tarantism in 2023), brings together a broad swath of musicians, including Joseph Allred, Shane Parish, Sally Anne Morgan, Nathan Bowles, the Tubers themselves, and some I was unfamiliar with. The music tends toward the rustic; much of it is excellent, and the cause is as noble as they come.

- Targeted a lot as a kid for getting sick from his unstable magic. He trained with SF! Alphys and studied how to stabilize his magic
- Very protective of Rus after an accident that occured in their childhoods that he sort of struggles with Rus’ boundaries. The accident also became the catalyst for Mal’s hardworking nature

- Food connoisseur but secretly loves greasy food. He loves good quality coffee.
- Secretly a fan of lame puns. A terrible pun will slip out every once in a while
- Very emotionally constipated
- Lieutenant of the Snowdin District. Is polite and respectful of others but hates faking it with those who gets on his nerves
- This man is so stressed and he keeps burdening himself with more higher expectations for himself so that he can keep protecting Rus
- Very distrustful of strangers and always tries to figure out what their true intentions are before he lets them get any closer to him. He prefers that people state what they need other than trying to pretend to be friendly with him

- He tries his best to understand others and wants to be helpful. He struggles with self-esteem
- Rus likes lollipops and sour candy. His favorite flavors are grape and orange
- Was given the nickname “Mutt” during his time underground due to his excellent eyesight and hearing and being by Mal’s side for almost the entire time. Rus grew to hate this nickname
- Got his scar from protecting Mal from other monsters as kids. The accident made Rus prone to run away from trouble rather than confronting it head on
- Built a lot of the puzzles in Snowdin Forest and set up protective gates in Snowdin
- Works as a software programmer. He kinda wants to make his own art program
- He loves drawing and video games. He actually has made several webcomics
- Rus is pretty critical of himself, especially after social interactions. He’s always thinking of things that he could improve on. This stems from the accident he had as a kid.
- He really wants to travel around the world to experience freedom and have his own adventures
- Will eat literally anything at any time. There’s no such thing as breakfast, lunch, and dinner food to him
- At times, he can be pretty smug. But this is a rare occurrence
- He values honesty as well as Mal and would rather have someone be honest to him than hurt him later
- Sometimes, Rus doesn’t think things through but it’s the thought that counts
- Rus has a collie named Bella, a gecko named Mumu and a frog named Pardner
- Loves listening to EDM, electro swing, and rock
- Has a German Shepherd named Bella and a Scottish Fold named Anya
- Love language: Quality time and physical touch
- Has a good sense of hearing and smell, but mostly smell.
Backstory under the cut!
- Mal, Rus, and their older brother Vise struggled to make ends meet when they became orphans at a young age. Vise took a lot of odd jobs while Mal and Rus stayed with each other, sometimes Rus having to take care of Mal due to his unstable magic
- Rus always stood up for Mal when Mal couldn’t do so. This changed when Rus nearly dusted from protecting Mal from other monsters who were targeting him.
- One day, the three of them went shopping. Vise went off somewhere to do a quick errand and told them to wait for him. Rus went ahead to buy some other things, unaware that Mal lagged a bit behind him. It wasn’t until Rus heard a struggle behind him. Mal was being attacked by several monsters. Rus quickly went to defend Mal from a fatal blow but almost dusted in the process.
- Vise finally came and quickly made the others run off. Mal was trying to heal Rus when Vise demanded to know what happened. After Rus told him, Vise berated him for leaving Mal behind and believes that Rus’ new scar should be a reminder of his mistake. Not Vise’s finest moment but that stuck with his two younger brothers for a long time.
- As a result of the accident, Rus withdrew himself and Mal trained to be stronger. Vise and Rus ended up getting jobs at the CORE, Vise being the Royal Scientist and Rus being an engineer
- Mal got into more arguments with Vise because of his new goal to join the Royal Guard. Vise didn’t believe that Mal wouldn’t get in because of his low HP and his unstable magic. This may have also fueled Mal’s “I do what I want” attitude
- After Vise fell into the CORE, Rus is the only one who remembers him while Mal had completely forgotten about him. Though Mal sometimes has this sense of wanting to one-up someone when he’s not feeling his strongest
- Alphys didn’t want to bring Mal onto the Guard, so Mal goes straight to the Queen herself to prove himself. He was put through a trial with the Queen and got his scar as a result. But he was recruited into the Guard.
- Rus quit working at the CORE and becomes a sentry in the Guard. Under the Queen’s watchful gaze, Mal was quickly promoted to Lieutenant of the Snowdin District (much to Alphys’ dismay) and Rus became a Judge due to his observant nature
- The two of them move into Snowdin and their reputations were quickly established, Mal’s being of the highest honor while Rus’ wasn’t… great
- While Mal seemed to gain more “allies”, Rus didn’t make a lot of friends. He occasionally keeps in contact with SF! Undyne to check in on her. Rus also starts spending time in Snowdin Forest and befriends SF! Asgore
- When SF! Chara fell to the underground, Asgore asked Rus if he could accompany the child to make sure they stay safe. Rus agrees too and decides to travel with Chara during their time in the underground. It took Mal some convincing, but Mal lets Chara and Rus through (though he kept tabs on them while they travel)

Fumio Itabashi / Henrik Schwarz / Kuniyuki - Watarase - if I have this right, this is Joe Claussell’s remix of both Schwarz & Kuniyuki’s respective mixes of Itabashi’s rerecording of his song “Watarase,” and it is amazing. With an orchestral/minyo performance on the B-side.
after great rework of jan jazz classic “watarase” by fumio itabashi, henrik schwarz, kuniyuki, joe claussell reconstructed “watarase”. it’s an epic cosmic jazz fusion.joe claussell meets kuniyuki are always best. on b side, it’s a rare minyo(japanese folk song) version of watarase. it’s a live version that fumio itabashi played with the local orchestra and minyo singer. a lot of diggers have been wishing to be released on vinyl. so this release is one of the most important catalogue on studio mule.
Here are the original mixes of Itabashi’s rerecording:

Flattered to say that both @roaringup and @chaumas-deactivated20230115 tagged me in this meme!
Last song I listened to: People in the City by Air has been stuck in my head all day, where I keep mistakenly rendering the lyrics as "B-I-G-G-I-R-L in the city". Lately I've been into ADULT. (Detroit electro) (have tickets to see them and MLWTTKK in October!), Client (London electro/synthpop), and De-Phazz (German trip-hop/jazz/DnB)
Last book I read: I've been stalled on The Secret Life of Groceries since May -- when I get stressed I have trouble prioritizing reading! Looking forward to getting back into it, though. It's about the dark underbelly of grocery store stocking and logistics. The last book I finished was Imagining Philadelphia: Travelers' Views of the City from 1800 to the Present by Philip Stevick, which collects letters and writings through the mentioned period. It's a bit dry and was part of my ongoing research about Philly to try to lend the setting of Latent Defects some credibility.
Last thing I watched: An episode of Dirty Jobs about cricket farming. It's the first episode I've seen where the host, Mike Rowe, has seemed truly irritated and unhappy with the job he signed up to do. He loves to complain (and I love to watch it), but he's never been so rude and grumpy on camera before.
KC and I have, of course, been watching Taskmaster. We're already nearly caught up. It's just very watchable.
Current obsession: Setting aside things like "a miniscule failure is evidence that I'm a horrible person and my life is on the brink of falling apart", uh: Wingspan, cooking with seasonal produce, and reading about fragrances online but rarely buying them.
For several months I tried making at least one new gluten-free baked good per week, which was lovely, but I had to stop because it got too hot. I am starting to accumulate recipes for the fall, though. (If you have them, send them to me. I have no other dietary restrictions and will try anything once)
Tag 8 people: Only if you choose, and regardless of how well I already know you: @dykespiegal, @tadpoleconspiracy, @melleonis, @definitionsfading, and @mossydecadence!
