The Blazing Champion - Flammagentius
With her Beloved, Queen Nike
I had so much fun working on this design back in June! Now that Altostratus is complete, here they are, the Blazing Champion!
Now the notes on this text under the read more:
Flammin (she/they, paintbrush, 10 years before refitting)
- before the relic wars, they were a master muralist
- 40 years old when her home was destroyed by Apollyon and was later found by Queen Nike
- although the trauma of their past gravely hunts them, they still find purpose within the Jazeran havens as a tunnels scout, using their skills to make maps on the walls of Nike's hidden haven. When Queen Nike recruited aid among the survivors of Apollyon's rampage, Flammin volunteered as a representative of objectkind.
Flammagentius the Blazing Champion
Throughout the pain of refitting, Flammin was cared for by Nike, who provided the future champion with quicksilver to calm her sore ichor and some needed company in her isolated construction scaffolding that supported her massive frame. With Nike as their mentor, Flammagentius became a proficient fighter trained in flight, combat, and flame. While objectkind looks up to their savior with brimming hope, Flammagentius feels burdened by her role in the relic wars. Yet, with each of Apollyon's relics destroyed and the fallen cities he conquered restored to their former glory, Flammagentius' hope for a future grows ever brighter.

Whooa it's been a bit! World of Relics editing stuff yeah!
So today, I returned to my WOR worldbuilding project, reading over my past notes, character sheets, and chapters for Rise of Relics. There was a lot of things that needed to be straightened up (especially the magic system), but at the most, it felt tight, tho, just needed some polishing up. Also, the WorldAnvil wiki for WOR needs updating badly.
Final edits for Altostratus are complete! I just set up my accounts for Wattpad, Writersky, Royal Road, and Scribble Hub. You can find me there as "Penwrythe". Altostratus will still be posted here as its own post with a link to Google Docs. The uploads of this story will be online sometime this week.
Going to finish up on editing where I left off from RFR's third draft. I was on chapter 3, page 87. I got stuck on an upcoming scene within this chapter where Nikey and Nicodemus had a fight about briefly separating after finally seeing each other again. Nikey was concerned about Nicodemus' safety after the Inversion Event destroyed everything, but Nicodemus was not sure if Nikey would put herself in danger due to her reckless behavior in the past.
...
You know what? Here you go!!! Big spoiler warning in the doc!
Here's RFR chp 3, Draft 1. It's a bit old, but the scene is pretty much the same as Draft 2 (currently editing Draft 3). It's around pg 86-90 (referring to the comic pages, the actual pages of the scene in the doc above are 92-96).
Anyway, for this scene, I wanted Nikey and Nicodemus to confront an unresolved conflict between themselves. Nikey just returned home after she was banished from Antiqua for five years for stealing from other gods. Nicodemus was reminded of her past actions and only wanted to keep her safe, while still processing his pained memories of her banishment.
I did get some feedback on this scene that a confrontation like this should happen later in the story after the characters go through more development, not in the beginning where we're just introduced to the characters. I'm unsure if I can post the feedback here, tho (it was from the World Anvil discord).
Anyway, for some context of this draft:
On pages 67-79, this flashback takes place centuries before the Inversion Event of the story. Nicodemus and Metatron (name change pending) are demi-gods, while Ferrous is a fully-fledged god. At the end of the flashback (page 79), we see the Nicodemus in the present. He's a crystal orb and Nikey is a trident, the weapons they had before they died during the Inversion Event.

Hi! Sorry for the major slow down on art as of late, but I'm getting back up to speed!
Working on Broken Mirror for World of Relics (Goddess-form Nikey's side). I made some changes to Nikey's armor, making it closer to hoplite armor used by ancient Greeks. I originally wanted to change her chest armor to a linothorax (cloth armor) but I just liked the simplicity of the bronze breastplate. This style depicted here was inspired by this recreation of the hoplite style! Nikey's armor is not historically accurate, but that's fine!
My worldbuilding has talking object people in it, so it's no problem!
Left is the old version and the right is the new version!

Finally writing again, oh my god.
Working on editing and revising chp 3!
Nikey is a trident and Nicodemus is a crystal orb, both were gods before the Inversion Event killed them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Went back and reread the pages that I was having trouble with. Just needed to tone down the initial confrontation between Nikey and Nicodemus and save the big moment for later (either at some later chp in #1 or in another issue).
Tumblr media
Have Nikey break down in this scene as a reaction to the confrontation (ashamed about her past, angry at herself, regret).
I copied and pasted the script sections in the Alt Text if you use screen readers. Not sure how the script formatting works in the alt text, tho.
Just six pages left to edit in chp 3 lol!

I'm back working on Altostratus' cover with Queen Nike (she/her) and Flammagenitus (she/they)! The thumbnail sketch for the cover is on the right, and on the left are quick anatomy sketches of a pterosaur, wyvern, and modern dredge war-torch.
Long lore post, more notes below!
So, initially, I wanted Flammagenitus to have large feathered wings made of metal. But I had no idea how to translate "feathered wings" to "armored wings" in her visual design. There's, like, a lot of stuff I need yet to figure out about the design of my WOR objectocs in Rise of Relics and The Mundane Realm settings: what era their forms would be the most common, how contflict, resources, and other factors affect the how living objects develop their civilian, worker, and war object groups, and so on. Then there are the cultures that inspired these elements and how to best represent them, even as inspiration for fantasy worldbuilding about talking object people. Something I really need to take time to sit down and think about before going deeper into writing.
I mean, I'm already knee-deep in it, but I'm welcome to rewrite stuff.
Anyway, I do know from my worldbuilding that the first living objects had cores that looked close to their original non-living forms before the Inversion Event. So, Nikey in RFR is just a trident with some mild modifications to allow ichor to create her face and wings, or at least the ichor structure to support her cloth wings. In centuries after the Inversion Event, objects and relics developed modifications to customize their cores, thus the Refitting Process was born.
Without going on too long, the Refitting Process was popular among the relics during the Age of Relics (0-500 AFR). The Hidden Age (500-1800 THA) was when the Refitting Process peaked during the Relic Wars, a time in which relickind fought amongst themselves over the fate of objectkind. The relics used refitting to make themselves more powerful, massive, and greater than their smaller forms. Led by the Great Spear Apollyon, some relics believed their lost divinity could be remade through this process. However, not all relics desired this and rather want to put an end to this war. Queen Nike worked with objectkind to build a powerful weapon to destroy the enemy relics. That weapon was Flammagentius, the first war-torch refitted from a living paintbrush.
:D Lore dumping yay! (Date format might change later, tho)
Anyway, so about Flammagenitus' design: well they are huge, I think I have their current size to be around 2080.2cm/68 feet…might update it later but yeah she's big. Since they were designed by Queen Nike and her relics, along with objectkind, there might be possible influence from Nike's culture prior to the Inversion Event.
Nike, or originally NIkey, was an Antiquan goddess. Her home, Antiqua, was inspired by Ancient Greece (around the Hellenistic period maybe need to look at my notes later ahhh). You can see her goddess form here! She was based on the Greek goddess Nike, the Goddess of Victory, and her goddess design was based on the Greek Hoplite.
So, for ideas of Flammagenitus' and future war-torch design:
Influence will be heavily Ancient Greece due to Queen Nike, but might borrow a few things from Ancient Rome since Flammagentius is a future ruler of Jazera (Rome inspired) which later splintered into smaller kingdoms after her death.
Greek helmets such as the Attic, Corinthian, or Chalcidian styles for her head design. Needs to allow some room for her jaw to move for her devastating killer bite.
Pterosaur-inspired wing design with a little bit of dragon in it. Also, using the pterosaur anatomy with the arms for greater support for Flammagenitus' heavy fuselage(?) and the ichor engine within it. Modern dredge war-torches have lighter construction but still have a heavy ichor engine.
Sidenote: Ichor engines are powered by unfettered ichor harvested from the ichor wells, deep pits in the earth full of ichor. It's the same thing that living objects have for limbs, but it contains enormous amounts of energy trapped within it. Can't be consumed or else it will cause Burnout (a condition that kills a living object with uncontrolled magic)
The modern dredge war-torch mentioned earlier in this post will come about two thousand years later, its role is to cause as much damage to castles and fortresses or to fight other dredge war-torches as an anti-air defense. They, and their monolith counterparts, are smaller than Flammagentius. This is due to the relic technological magic that was used to refit Flammagentius was lost during The Relic Wars. A refitted core that Flammagentius had would put far too much stress on a dredge's ichor structure, increasing the chance of internal damage.
Here are some war-torch designs with more bird-like anatomy from last year. These I might use for smaller war-torches for aerial attacks in battle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Might do more research on the wing thing or I can just default to ichor limbs shifting into wing appendages. We'll see.

Flammagenitus, why I made you so complicated akhahahahhah (so glad I’m going 3D for RFR’s comic cause there’s so many characters that are basically like this)
So, first image on the top left is of Flammin as a “human-ish” creature with dragon-like traits. Having no familarity with designing robots or mechs, I usually fall back on organic shapes from animal and human anatomy. Basically a good starting point if I have no idea where to go.
Next three images are just variations of the “armor” overlayed on the “human-ish” design, using the Greek Corinthian helmet as a reference (see notes here). I didn’t like these designs for Flammin mostly because they just look too dragon like. I wanted something that still looks like a helmet, with a large jaw.
The two images in the final row are when I realized I lost the ancient Greece aesthic for Flammin’s design. I discussed a little about this aesthic here in Altostratus cover’s initial sketches post. Nikey (or Queen Nike in Flammin’s time period) was from Antiqua, a land inspired by Ancient Greece. Queen Nike helped in Flammagentius’ construction during the events of the Relic War, so much of Nike’s Antiquan influence had affected Flammagentius’ design.
Last image, Flammagentius with revised helmet shape, keeping the Greek Corinthian helmet design with modifications on it for her eyes, jaw, crest, and horn. The remaining design is almost finished, just need a separate ref page for Flammin’s body, head, and colors. Then Altostratus’ cover will be next!
Also, here’s a size comparison model between Flammin (68ft currently, big dragon look thing) and a human (5ft, smol box):

Feedback Needed on a thingy!
Hi everyone, this is Penwrythe and I would like to get some feedback on something!
Over the past three years, I have been working on my worldbuilding project, World of Relics! This setting has sub-worldbuilding projects: Rise of Relics and the Mundane Realm. World of Relics features living objects in a high fantasy setting. They are kind of like the classic fantasy mimics from RPG games and stories, just without the flesh-eating part, lol.

Update on Pyroblast the War-Torch (Paintbrush II fanart)
I sketched out their facial and head anatomy. I like a naturalistic style with my object characters, so I added a slight curve on Pyroblast's head. I also gave them a fuller pompadour bristle style, too! Details below!
Wing anatomy was something I was stuck on for a bit, mostly because I was bouncing between robotic wings vs a more naturalistic bird-like wing. While designing this, I realized that polearm war-objects like Pyroblast would need some protection on their wing joints and shoulder. So I added a pauldron over the should joint that overlaps with the start of the wing and a segmented couter(?) at the elbow. I also added segmented bands over the metal primary feathers of Pyroblast's wing.
As for the material makeup of a polearm's anatomy: Both flying and ground polearms are made of strong light metals and wood. The wings of a flying polearm are made up of aluminum/thin steel sheets (still researching this) enchanted with spells to strengthen them for combat, flight, and high temperatures. Pyroblast is a Heavy Class General Dread-torch, so their materials need to handle stress from high heat from their fire magic, extreme turbulence from the dynamic flight, and from any attacks from other Dread-torches.
Lower rank war-torches are mostly for aerial attacks on ground armies, while Dread-torches are castle destroyers. Castles would need defense against Dread-torches, either from using Dread-torches of their own (provided from their kingdom's capital, usually for heavily targeted castles) or using other means of anti-air defense.
I'm thinking about using this design for future flying polearms set in the Mundane Realm. For RFR, I might use a more simplified style to show how the first flying polearms still kept most of their original weapon shape before the Inversion Event.

Might start on Blacktober next week
Time-related issues are still a bit finicky right now, but it's not bad, so...I might be good this month, idk??
Anyway, here's a list of Black characters I want to draw for Blacktober this year. It needs some narrowing down, but so far, I'm thinking about:
My own characters:
Nikey (RFR), Nicodemus (RFR), Medusa (TMR), Flammin as human (TMR), Beatrix from Iohnovia (old project).
Other media:
Books
Damaya/Essun/Syenite or Alabaster from The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin
Tau, Jabari, or Zuri from The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter
Bree Matthews, Vera, or Valec from Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn
Zeilie, Amari, -as much as I hate don't like him- Inan from Children of Blood and Bone
Films, Series, Webcomic and Podcast
Prince Ezran (with Azymondias), Aditi, Janai from the Dragon Prince series
Hobe, Miles, Jessica from Into the Spider-Verse
Qebrus and Crjth from Rising Sand by Ty Dunitz and Jenn Lee
Juno Steel from Juno Steel series | The Penumbra podcast
Depending on how this month goes, I might either do a mix of full body or portraits, or just portraits. Some of these characters I might need a refresher on, so that means some reading or watching some of their source material again.
I'll return to this list tomorrow to shorten it a bit because it's a lot...........

Just got done editing chapter 2 revisions for RFR draft 3!
Got stuck on a very important magic system thingy but hopefully it's understandable! I'll send it tomorrow to my writing group and World Anvil's server for critique.
The remaining chapters are not that intense for revision notes, but I might want to consider hiring an editor who can help me spot errors and plot holes.
Also while editing, I need to look into getting sensitivity reader for some of my disabled characters. Both Nikey and Tariote has my anxiety and autism, but Tariote has different coping mechanisms than Nikey and masks his stems less than Nikey. Also, Nicodemus is somewhat based on my dad and his disabilities as an elderly adult.
These characters do have powers as gods....former gods, but their powers don't make up for their disability. Example: Nicodemus the Wise (God of Spellweaving/now crystal benitoite orb) is a powerful magic god, but his casting abilities, along with offense and defense abilities, are limited to one hand. He can only conjure either a shield or sword at a time, but if he has to perform non-combative magic, he vulnerable to almost all attacks. Defense is his strong suit, but offensive attacks are his greatest disadvantage. Teleportation is very very weak, and has a chance to cause magical exhaustion for him. So, it's only used for emergencies. Any magically created weapon is easy to disarm with a strong strike, except shields which stay up longer until it breaks. Basically, combat sucks for Nick! But Nick is good at magical engineering! Makes him think! Just without the fighting!
Moar lore ohhhhh
Anyway, just one more spell check then onwards to chapter 3 revisions!

This a short blurb from a TMR story I scrapped some time ago
This blurb is from a story that, honestly, needed a bit more time for the rest of The Mundane Realm to develop. I was not ready to write it. By that, I mean that the worldbuilding, history, and the broader concept of the lore of World of Relics need some fleshing out before writing this story. So for now, it will be on the back burner for a very long time.
However, I want to share this blurb because I still like it. I had written it during a rough time earlier this year (cough-prev post-cough). It was the first time I tried narratively writing my objectocs in this manner. It still needs more development and some major corrections on grammar, but it's still alright. Enjoy!
// major spoilers for RFR and TMR , feat. Nikey and Flammagenitus
~
~
The sky is a deep blue, weighted by heavy black clouds that block the sky. The lands below her are shrouded in a deep shadow, rolling hills under the billowing clouds. She never saw the sunrise but heard about it from the altrix who raised her. A great star, the sun was once driven by a being of fire before the rise of objectkind, now it roams the skies since the Event thousands of years ago. That fire being, along with many others like it, later became the progenitors of the relics that live today.
One of which flies by her. A trident with large red wings so long and slender, it still surprised her that they could support the weight of their owner’s long core that was far larger than her own. The trident’s name escapes her, they only met a few times in the past. She remembers the first meeting with her and how she towered over her. She is one the first and last of her generation of the First Relics.
“Keep your wings steady,” the trident said, ”You’re doing great! That new tail weight of yours is helping with your balance.”
Following the trident’s direction, she steadies her metal wings. How long did it take her to get here? Months of training her ichor and eating excessive amounts of material to strengthen her core. Then the long refitting process took another year. She just started flying and her leaders wanted her to be ready to fight in the war in a few months. So much change to become a monolithic flying torch. A future weapon to best any rouge relic.
Sudden turbulence disrupts her flight and she makes an attempt to correct herself. But she overdoes it and begins to spin out of control. She panics and flaps her wings uselessly. She screamed as both the sky and the ground became one ever-spinning black-and-gray gradient.
“Nike!,” she yelled. That's the trident's name.
Golden aura wraps around her wooden and metal frame and slows her descent. "It's alright, Flammin! I got you!"
Flammin turns to face Nike above her. Radiant the trident was, covered in gold and silver plating attached upon a dark walnut wooden pole. Red cloth wings stretched wide, which are attached to her chest with a decorative cloth knot. Just above it, supported by a bronze neck, is her head blade, cast in rusted bronze with the edges of her prongs shining gold.
Nike. The Queen of Relickind.
Effortlessly pulling her back up, Nike draws her aura close. With a gentle twist of her aura, she rights Flammin in the correct flight position.
“I’m about to release you. Be ready.”
Flammin opens her wings and tilts them slightly, expecting a sudden influx of air to take her again. But as the aura ebbs away and the gray sky becomes open to her once again, Flammin is able to hold herself steady. She hears Nike giggle a bit at her.
“What?” Flammin asked.
“You’re smiling!”
“Oh-!” Flammin shies away, allowing herself to lag behind. She wonders for a moment if Nike caught her blush upon her mahogany wooden face.
“Flammin, don’t be shy!” Nike laughs, “Want to see what’s above the clouds?”
She looks towards Nike, smiling, “Will the sun be there? Won’t we get in trouble?”
“Marathon is still on our side. They still guard the sun,” Nike said, mentioning another relic Flammin does not know, “And the insurgent relics are foolish to attack me. You are safe by my side.”
Nike flies higher and Flammin follows close behind her. They go through the dark clouds, using the faint light of the sun beyond to guide them through. They weave together in and out of the cloudscape. At one point, Flammin hears Nike laughing. And she joins her. After a short time, they break through the cloud top and beheld a sight before their eyes.
The sun shines brightly, bathing the cloudscape in its golden rays, and the sky surrounding it is a neverending blue. The clouds below shine a pearlescent white with occasional breaks in their formation showing the shadowed lands under them. Flammin looks at Nike and sees her shine more brightly under the rays of the sun. They fly side by side as the winds in this space gently push them forward.
Flammin sighs.
“Nikey?”
“Hm?”
“You’re beautiful.”
“You, too.”

Preliminary sketches god form and relic form of Nicodemus and Tariote
Two characters from my story RFR! Rough character descriptions below the cut!
Character Description (rough):
Nicodemus (300yrs, He/Him, cis male) is a God of Spell Weaving and the mentor of two apprentices, Nikey and Tariote. Years before Nikey's banishment, Nicodemus helped Nikey earn the title, Goddess of Victory, after her ascension to godhood. His past relationship with Metatron was positive, he looked up to him as a loyal friend and find his leadership inspiring. They were friends who trained under their former mentor, Ferrous, the former God of Spell Weaving. When Ferrous went rogue and killed other gods for their power, both Nicodemus and Metatron sealed him away. Although they grew distant over the years, Nicodemus and Metatron still work together in their respective roles in the Great Temple of Antiqua. After the Inversion Event, Nicodemus is summoned by Metatron to help build an array to reverse the spell that trapped the souls of mortals and gods inside their relics.
Tariote (26yrs, He/Him, non-binary) is an apprentice of Nicodemus, training under his mentor to understand the mechanics of magic and alchemy. Due to a learning disability, Tariote has difficulty learning and remembering things at a young age, but Nicodemus helps him cope by aiding him in his education. Tariote eventually becomes skilled at both magic and alchemy with help from Nicodemus, Metatron, and Faith. Most gods don't take Tariote seriously and often deem his disability hinders his capabilities as a god. Tariote's sister, Nikey, is highly protective of him and sees him as a little brother.

Thumbnail style frames for RFR showing Nikey (top four sketches) and Nicodemus (bottom four sketches).
I want to show how powerful my relic characters are. So I am working on two possible compositions:
One composition is the character is in a pose and showing an example of their most prominent trait. Nikey is about to fly off with her long wings. Nicodemus is charging a spell.
The other composition is the character in action. I have Nikey mostly in flight, but in her fourth thumbnail, she is fighting against two stone alicorns with her bolts of light and fire. Nicodemus’ thumbnails are mostly of him using his spells to either shield himself or defend someone.

Thumbnail sketches for RFR Object Show comic cover. The title is missing here because I am still working on a style for it. All four images shows my character, Nikey, as both her goddess form and relic form. I wanted to show some form of representation of how the Inversion Event kills off all life in the setting of the world of RFR and how both Relickind and Objectkind become the new life after this mass extinction event.
Kind of grim of an Object Show, I know. I based this story on my experience during this era of Covid (and everything of this year), so uh yeah...its going to be a bit dark.
I’ll update the covers with some color so the symbolism is more clear.

I've been doing a little research trying see in what age category does my stories, RFR and the Mundane Realm, would fit in.
Long post, sorry!
I initially thought that Young Adult was meant for ages 18-25. Turns out it's actually 13-18.
So I looked up what would classify a story (information is usually for novels but still useful) as either Young Adult, New Adult, or Adult.
Usually, YA has a young voice (characters are late teens or adults in their early twenties), have first time experiences (love and romance), coming of age, etc. Topics maybe mature, but not explicit.
Adult has an older voice (characters are 18+ or above twenties), already have experiences with certain things in life, and certain topics (drugs, sex, violence) are more mature and more explicit.
New Adult is...weird. Like is supposed to be either a crossover type of category that bridges YA and Adult or a category for a story that appeals to a wide audience.
Unfortunately, these are all marketing terms not actual age ratings. There's a possibility that these terms are a little inconsistent, too. So uh, hmm.
I guess if I want to say what my stories are for...
Most of my characters are 20 or older and most of their experiences are either new careers, surviving wars, challenging status quo, and facing trauma etc. RFR is very heavily based on my anxieties throughout 2020 and 2021, with the main character, Nikey, reflecting most of my fears and worries about existentially threatening major events. This would mean that RFR is written from an adult pov with anxiety. Both stories handle mature topics but is not heavily explicit (there's no extreme gorey violence or any emphasis on sexual implications). At most, it's all PG-13.
So is it better to describe my stories as either New Adult (maybe) or Adult? Not all adult stories have to have heavily explicit stuff in it.
For a comparison to my stories, it's similar to The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Children of Blood and Bone, or Daughter of the Lilies. I consider these PG-13 (Children of Blood and Bone bordering on R or Adult*).**
*I just checked to see where CoBaB would be and it's YA. For the stuff that happened in it, I'm genuinely surprised.
**Quick search says all these are either YA or PG-13. Since I'm comparing my stories to them, is using YA to describe my stories fine??
I need to more research on this. I'm welcomed to any input on this, too.
