Blacktober 2023 Medusa and Eshu (World of Relics)

When one dies, the other follows. When one lives, the other follows. Tethered together by a curse forced upon them by a jaded angry being, Medusa and Eshu are forever bonded in a cycle of life and death. Yet despite this, through their undying loyalty they will always find each other. Still working on Eightenate! Got the first of her poses cleaned up, next is expressions!

Some rough lore stuff below

Might do corrections on her arms tomorrow. It's fine her arms change their length between poses here. I like the idea that whatever a living object is doing, their limbs will shift their mass for that purpose.

An ability called Ichormancy.

I.e: jumping from a high place onto the ground requires the limbs (Eightenate's arms in this case) to thicken to absorb the shock when landing. If climbing, they lengthen. If fighting (which happens very often for earthkind like Eightenate), their limbs form thicker skin/scales for protection. And so on.

Advanced Ichormancy may allow an object to shift their limbs to extreme forms or disconnect them, allowing the limbs to float and have a wider range of movement. Example: Swords and their floating hands.

Eightenate's eye is a rare form of natural Ichormancy where she had gravely injured her core but her strong will prevented her ichor structure from retreating into a kernel. This forms a germ at the site where her core was injured. As with some partially revived objects with this rare condition, eventually, this germ may need to be extracted to prevent further injury as it will absorb any material surrounding it to create a new curio.

Eightenate is lucky that this germ is dormant...for now. It occasionally throbs, but it's nothing that a sip of mercury can't soothe. As long as she does not need to be revived again, Eightenate needs not worry about it.

Oh, and the die in her eye is mostly for cosmetic purposes. She can't see out of it, but she likes the way it looks.

Autosexual | Autospec Pride colors with Amasui colors!

Explanation: My objectoc, Menathrenna, with a new addition to my labels: Autosexual and Autospec. Autospec is a spectrum of self-attraction, which includes autosexuality, autoromatic, autoplatonic, self-partnering, and autoflux. It is part of the ace spectrum.

Amasui (the colors on the little card Mirror!Menathrenna is holding) is not a sexuality or (xeno)gender identity, but more or less the concept of self-love via alt versions, doubles, copies, or clones of a single character. It is an alternative term to replace selfc#st, of which its suffix is often associated with a problematic fetish of related members. Amasui was created to explore a character's self-attraction without problematic baggage. Ama from amatio in Latin means "love" and sui in Latin means "self".

Menathrenna (she/they) in this version is paired with mirror!self, Mirror!Menathrenna. Inspired by an interesting experience of my autosexuality some time ago, Mirror!Mena represents seeing myself at that moment, the awareness of "me". Mirror!Mena grips Menathrenna with one hand, and in the other, holds the Amasui colors. Unlike the original 2023 pride art, Menathrenna looks at Mirror!Mena, her reflection tucking her head under Menathrenna. Symbolically, Menathrenna looks inwards toward her inner self as the object of her attraction. Mirror!Mena's face is hidden and Menathrenna's eyes are just under the shadows of her hood-head, representing the private feelings I have only for myself.

To elaborate on object xenoficton a bit, I also use it to describe how I worldbuild my object characters and the universe they are in. I focus on how their anatomy functions such as the ichor structure, and the core (object body they are in), and how different conditions such as wear and tear, durability, and magic have an effect on their overall existence. There are revival methods explored in my worldbuilding on how objects treat death and revival. With the Revival Ritual (or the Ritual of Convalescence), anyone can come back as long materials and donated ichor are provided to fulfill a requirement for a revival - with some limitations on age, damage, and permanent injury states on the object's core and body. The history and timeline for WOR are still being developed, but they explore the implications of the Inversion Event that created objectkind from the remains of gods and mortals.

Oh, noble Blade, what do you see when you look into their eyes?

Do you not see yourself, a form long forgotten?

Or do you see the meek who complained too loudly of their struggles?

What entrapped you, your eyes locked by the gaze of something you thought was long dead.

A being of flesh with a small body so fragile you can easily crush it.

What do you see, oh mighty Blade? What's is there in those eyes that sent a shudder down your pommel, keeping you frozen just for a brief moment before you tear them asunder?

It's weak. Pitiful thing, yet you fear them.

No weapon they make can harm you in any meaningful way, but by their gaze and voice alone is enough to stop you.

What happens if they all rise up together, oh wicked Blade? From your ichor, you felt the collective ever beating drums in their forms. A stirring to be free.

Who are you to deny their peoplehood?

Yet, the gaze grows weaker, it's owner weeping red.

And you find yourself regain control, heat blistering upon your sharpened metal core.

Sour Blade. Awful Blade.

Altostratus cover update!

To be unreachable...

Queen Nike's wings are a combination of linen cloth and ichor threading rooting from her ichor structure. Flammagentius' wings are all ichor, with the only non-ichor material supporting them being her bronze metal fingers.

Ichormancy is the practice of developing and improving a living object's ichor structure, increasing its strength, flexibility, durability, tension tolerance, and damage tolerance. Most objects hatched with the instinctual ability to do basic ichormancy (moving limbs and shifting them for better balance or tolerating pressure). This level of ichormancy demonstrated by Flammagentius takes years, along with refitting, to master. Don't want to drop straight out of the sky should it fail.

As a living object grows more powerful, their ichor limbs gain colorful gradients...

Altostratus story update!

Currently working on Draft 5 finally. I spent most of my time yesterday cleaning up each paragraph, adding a few extra details here and there, and improving a bit of the grammar in the story. Today, I combined the edited paragraphs together to read the new draft as a complete story. It reads better, especially for the small worldbuilding details describing living object anatomy.

But I'm currently stuck at pronoun usage. So Queen Nike uses she/her and Flammin/Flammagentius uses she/they, both are nonbinary. Both characters are living objects, with Nike as a living trident and Flammin as a wartorch. I wanted to try shifting Flammin's pronouns within the narrative of the story, so either per paragraph or so. The result of this became very clunky very quickly, either that I confuse Flammin with Nike, or Flammin with something that's a pair or group.

To illustrate this here's an example of pronoun shifting:

Excitedly flapping her long wings, Nike quickly glides over Flammin to her other side. Flammin turns her head to follow the trident, mildly jealous of Nike’s greater agility in flight. When they started their flying lessons a month ago, Nike flew circles around them. Those lessons were rough in the beginning due to Flammin still needed time to adapt to her new size, but Nike encouraged them to keep going. “Ah, at this point,” Nike said as she settles in her new position, “You’ll be a skilled flier in no time.” “And to think for the past three years, I was stuck in those damned scaffolds,” Flammin said through her closed heavy jaw, shuddering a little at the memory. She had to endure a decades-long refitting to become the form they are now.

So, I tried looking for advice and found this interesting, and frustrating, thread about interchangeable pronouns for non-binary characters. CW // mild transphobia, mostly from a few users who don't understand nonbinary people and alternative pronoun usage

Anyway, from the suggestions in the thread, it seems to be better to use either she/her, they/them, a neopronoun set, or use interchangeably between chapters or scenes.

So, comparing what I have above, here's what I'm thinking of writing about instead:

As She/Her

Also, there's a possible confusion between singular they and plural they.

Flammin remembers the first year of their refitting they spent training their ichor and consuming excessive amounts of material to strengthen their core in preparation for their role. Then the toolsmiths have begun their construction. The pain of Flammin’s core being drilled, wielded, and cut, and their ichor structure stretched by the toolsmiths bothered them so much that they drank tankers full of quicksilver to soothe their deepest aches. And the scaffolds. Flammin’s core itched as the damned scaffolds kept them off the ground while the toolsmiths installed new gears in their legs. This became easier to live with as the construction neared its completion, especially with a small refillable quicksilver pump installed inside them. Flammin breathes some steam, glad that it’s over, even with the occasional dull aches still lingering within their core’s new structure.

Anyway, I'll keep looking. I'll also look up books and stories by nonbinary and trans writers for a solution for this as well. Anyone with any advice is welcome to reblog or comment on this post. Thank you!
