Welcome back to my series discussing the real-life inspirations for all legendary and mythical Pokémon. Today I’ll be covering gen II. For previous entries see gen I, all starters, all fish, and all non-fish aquatics.
The legendary beasts were a first in in the series for being legendary Pokémon that are actually the subject of legend. They were three Pokémon who were killed in the brass tower burned down, but were then resurrected by Ho-Oh. Each one represents one of the events involved in the burning of the tower. I personally like the theory that they were the gen I eeveeloutions before being revived. While the beasts are very cool, I don’t know if I can forgive them for introducing the roaming legendaries mechanic to the game. I’m going to hold off on covering the paradox beasts for now because I haven’t decided if I’m going to cover the paradox Pokémon at all and we haven’t seen paradox Entei yet.
Raikou is electric type and represents the lightning that struck the brass tower and started the fire. It’s also definitely the least utilized of the beasts. Entei gets a movie and Suicune gets to be a cover legendary but poor Raikou gets left behind. Anyway, it’s based on the raijū, a creature from Shinto mythology. The Raijū is the companion of Raijin, the god of thunderstorms. It is normally calm and peaceful, but during storms it will fly around as a ball of lightning and its roars sound like thunder. It is normally depicted as a dog or wolf, but can also be depicted as a huge variety of animals and mythical creatures. That’s pretty much a dead ringer for Raikou, but there’s still more. Raikou may also draw form the Nue, a chimera from Japanese mythology that is usually described as at least part tiger and can transform into a cloud and go flying around. In terms of real-life inspirations, Raikou is also based on Smilodon, the most famous genus of saber-toothed cats. These are commonly called saber-toothed tigers, which fits with Raikou being yellow (which is kind of like orange) with black stripes. Raikou’s shiny also makes it look more tiger-like.

(image: a depiction of a raijū as an abstract beast not clearly resembling any real animal. The source given fro this image was Ban Koko's Kanda-Jihitsu but when I looked that up the only references I could find to that work were the citations attached to this image)
Tumblr media
(image: paleoart of a Smilodon depicting it as a large, thick-bodied cat with a short tail, brownish coat covered in spots, and protruding fangs from its mouth. Source)
Entei is fire type and represents the fire that burned down the brass tower. It looks like a combination short-muzzled dog and big cat and is based heavily on Barong, a heroic panther spirit from Balinese mythology. Barong is the leader of the forces of good who battles the demon queen Rangda in a struggle between good and evil. Entei’s shagginess around the head and neck resembles a lion’s mane and lions are associated with strength in many cultures. There is also a connection between lions and fire as in alchemy, a lion is used as a symbol representing the sun. Dogs also feature in Entei’s character design, especially saint bernards, who are large, strong, and shaggy dogs with shorter muzzles. Entei’s design is meant to look like an erupting volcano, with its fur being the base of the volcano, the plates on its back being rock broken open, the smoke emerging from its back being smoke, and its red and yellow facial markings being lava.
Tumblr media
(image: a Balinese statue or effigy of Barong, depicting it as a large quadruped covered in shaggy fur with a cat-like face and decorated with a crown and jewlery)
Suicune is water type and represents the rain that extinguished the brass tower’s fire. It’s the hardest one to pin down a relationship to a real animal, but the designer said it was designed with leopards in mind. The leopard design plus Suicune’s connection to the north wind references Fūjin, the Shinto god of the wind, who wears a leopard skin. Fūjin and Raijin are commonly seen together, giving a close relationship between Suicune and Raikou. Suicune’s mane looks like an aurora and its ribbon-like tails move in a way that seems like waves or gusts of wind. Mythologically, Suicune draws from the qilin, a mythical Chinese creature. Descriptions of the qilin vary, but they are always depicted as ungulates (hooved animals) and in many stories can walk on top of water like Suicune. Chinese qilins are usually depicted as draconic and may have one or two horns. Suicune splits the difference by having two horns that fuse together. The Japanese version of the qilin, the kirin, is usually depicted as more deer-like, which more closely fits the clearly mammalian Suicune.

(image: a stature of a qilin at the Summer Palace in Beijing. It depicted as a quadruped with a horde-like body plan and hooves, but reptilian scales. its head looks cat-like, with a beard, long barbels from the snout, and small antlers)
The tower duo started the trend of having version-exclusive legendaries on the box art of the games. Despite this, legendarries being important to the plot wasn’t a thing until gen III, therefore the tower duo don’t have as much attention and lore as the box art legendaries that would follow. In theory they are both birds and their name comes from how they used to roost on top of the bell tower and brass tower until the brass tower burned down, causing them to leave. They are also both related to a legendary trio, with Ho-Oh being the creator of the legendary beasts and Lugia being made into a mediator for the legendary birds by the 2nd movie.
Lugia is one of the most iconic legendary Pokémon as well as one of the weirdest. It is really hard to pin down what this thing is supposed to be. Lugia is the guardian of the sea and is associated with storms and the color silver. While it normally lives underwater, Lugia can breathe air as and fly. It is notoriously classified as a flying type and not a water type. Lugia really should be water/flying instead of psychic/flying. Lugia was designed for the 2nd movie and the designer was surprised to find out it got added to the games as well. What exactly Lugia is is a hard question to answer. It looks a bit like a short-necked plesiosaur or a penguin, which fits it being aquatic. Its name and color might come from beluga whales. Another possible source is Bahamut, a gigantic, monstrous fish from pre-Islamic Arabian mythology that was one of multiple creatures that carried around the world. An older name for Bahamut is Lutīyā, which certainly sounds like Lugia. Lugia looks vaguely draconic and may be based on Ryūjin, the Shinto sea god who was a dragon that lived at the bottom of the sea.
Tumblr media
(image: the painting Princess Tamatori Steals Ryujin's Jewels by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Ryujin is depicted as a serpentine, wingless dragon emerging from a wave)
Together with Ho-Oh, Lugia represent duality, which is frequently symbolized as a dragon and a phoenix. The dragon represents masculinity and yang while the phoenix represents femininity and yin.
As mentioned above, the theme of duality represented by the dragon and the phoenix inspired the tower duo. Lugia is the dragon while Ho-Oh is the phoenix. Or rather, it is the fenghuang, the immortal bird of Chinese legend that often gets translated to English as “phoenix”. The Japanese name for the fenghuang is hōō, which is pronounced the same as Ho-Oh. Both are said to have many colored feathers like Ho-Oh. While the fenghuang is sometimes associated with fire, the fire and immortality aspect of Ho-Oh seem to come from the western phoenix, famous for rising from its own ashes after death. Ho-Oh likely does this too as the Sacred Ashes item is apparently Ho-Oh’s ashes and can restore your party members from fainting. Pheonixes are often used to symbolize immortality and rebirth, which fits with Ho-Oh raising the legendary beasts from the dead. Other possible inspirations include the Slavic firebird or the three-legged crow.

If Celebi had debuted after gen 6, it definitely would have been a fairy type because it is heavily based on fairies, nature spirits, and other mythical creatures. Celebi is based on nature spirits like the Greek dryads and Japanese kodama, but primarily the idea of kami. In the Japanese religion of Shinto, every object has an associated spirit or god called a kami that embodies that object. Celebi being a forest spirit and being found in a Shinto shrine clearly indicates that it is a kami if the forest, presumably Ilex Forest as that’s where its shrine is found. Celebi’s time traveling ability is likely a refence to fairy stores where someone will visit the land of the fairies for a little while, only to find out that years if not decades or centuries have passed in the brief time they were there. Or they may spend years there to find only minutes have passed back on Earth. Celebi’s physical appearance is a fairy mixed with a plant bulb. It’s worth noting that Celebi’s beta design clearly drew form Kokopelli,a god of trickery, fertility, and music worshipped amongst some Native American tribes of the southwest US. A depiction of Kokopelli has become a common symbol in the southwest US.

all multiples of 6 for the pokemon ask o:
alright, here we go!
6. least favorite trainer if "trainer" here is referring to the player character, i feel like i can only really go off design, since no trainer really has a discernable personality (unless you count the trainers that become your rival if you don't choose them, like brendan/may or serena/callum). i don't think any of them are bad per se, but i'll go with ethan (gold/silver/crystal protag) rather arbitrarily.
12. least favorite trial (sun & moon) sun and moon are some of the only games i've never played, but i think i'd dislike the electric trial the most. i'm atrocious at puzzles.
18. 3 least favorite pokémon this is one i've answered before: wobbuffet, flamigo, and klefki.
24. your favorite team of pokemon you’ve ever had i've also talked about this one in a previous ask. it's gotta be my scarlet team: skeledirge, great tusk, glimora, rabsca, kilowattrel, and toedscruel. i grew really attached to them during my playthrough and i still use them whenever i play.
30. least favorite normal type it's gotta be gumshoos. it's just ugly and gross. not to mention it looks like you-know-who.
36. least favorite water type inteleon. it's uncanny and weird, and i hate how skinny it is.
42. least favorite poison type golbat, due to personal experiences with it. it is a constant reminder of my young stupidity.
48. least favorite rock type man, so many multiples of 6 are negative, huh? well, for me it's rhyperior. i like rhyhorn, and i love rhydon, but this thing is completely unnecessary.
54. least favorite dragon type looking through the dex, i'm realising that i don't really dislike any dragon types. the exception to this is origin forme palkia. i saw a lot of folks making cool art of their ideas of origin formes for the diamond and pearl legendaries. and then we got... this. a horse. and not even a cool one. why.
60. least favorite psychic type bruxish. it's a horrid design, and i don't know anyone who likes it.
66. least favorite pokémon movie confession: i've never seen a pokémon movie. it'd have to be detective pikachu by default, if that counts, but i love that movie.
72. favorite pokémon plushie sitting cuties venusaur! i own one, and he's very friend shaped.
78. least favorite eeveelution i've answered this one at least twice: glaceon. it's not bad, by any means, but the other eeveeloution are far better imo.

HELP ME HOW DID YOU BEAT THE 12 V 6 IN GLASS WORKSTATION IT'S HELL
i'm playing with the gen 8 + eeveeloution mod so cain's marowak is an obstagoon if that helps
I haven't played the gen 8 + eeveelution mod to that part yet, but I'll see what I can do! I hope this helps!
(For one of my attempts for this battle I just spammed wish and calm mind for mega audino)
Either have really bulky pokemon or fast hard hitting ones
I always made sure to take out Shelly's Ribombee first so my pokemon don't become slower (Unless you're using a trick room team).
I recommend taking out all of Shelly's pokemon first since they usually go out in one hit. Use moves like rock slide and heat wave.
After defeating her you can focus on Cain's pokemon.
I don't know if you defeated them at all but there is a battle right after where you can't save in between so here is my advice for that (spoilers, possibly) :
Her Weavile has a focus sash so make sure you have a pokemon with a priority move so it can't do to much damage to you.
Her Mismagius WILL go for nasty plot if you have a fairy or normal type at full health is out (unless they're weak to electric or fairy) so make sure one of those is out when fighting that.)
Her Honckrow has sucker punch so try and stall that out.
The rest is pretty easy to take out.
Make sure NONE of your pokemon faint during this battle.
Then the third battle where you don't get healed, so you'll go in with the unfainted pokemon with full health, but lowered pp.
Once again, heat wave and rock slide is useful here since it's another double/6 v 12
Make sure you have a pokemon to get rid of hail/aurora veil.
Except the Glaceon and Brongzong none of the pokemon are really bulky so you can easily take them out.

Please rate the eeveelutions, they're my favs I wanna know what you think about them
Okay now that I’m at my computer and not my phone let’s get cracking!!
First and foremost, Eevee! #133
not my favorite │ average │ cute │ adorable │ best │ ultimate fave
Eevee is adorable, dependable, versatile (obviously), like its a 1st stage pokemon that can be added to your group and then evolved into such a VARIETY of types to offset whatever thing you’re lacking in your team like, loveability aside that’s straight up useful. The swiss army knife of pokemon. And you can plan for the future like, okay I don’t need an electric cause by the time i get to X gym i’ll have a jolteon. Eevee is freaking adorable and amazing, I have Let’s Go Eevee and his name is Copper and I love him.
Vaporeon #134. Water.
not my favorite │ average │ cute │ adorable │ best │ ultimate fave
Vaporeon is elegant. Like I know Espeon is the fancy one? But you can’t ignore that Vaporeon is right up there with it for like dismissive bitch at the party. They can be the intelligent reserved one AND the fancy one, 10/10
Jolteon #135. Electric.
not my favorite │ average │ cute │ adorable │ best │ ultimate fave
You ever bought a pair of vans? chances are you’re into Jolteon. Jolteon is the androgynous fav, the punk girl and the rock dude, the agreeable middle ground of the Eevee gang. Jolteon is just cool, and fast as FUCK, you need a speed boost?? Get yourself a Jolteon
Flareon #136. Fire.
not my favorite │ average │ cute │ adorable │ best │ ultimate fave
Got to admit, not my fav. A somewhat uninspired design, I understand that the fluff looks like fire but what if the fluff WAS fire? I’m talking Ponyta dude, What if it was white hot fire and the red fur had a gradient down to the paws where the part closest to the white hot fire was paler, and the paws were a deep dark red and it’s eyes looked like smoldering coals. Now THATS a fire-type Eevee, but by no means to be ignored, Just not my fav
Umbreon #197. Dark.
not my favorite │ average │ cute │ adorable │ best │ ultimate fave
You ever bought a slap bracelet at hot topic? You’ve heard of Umbreon, and he’s been in your main team since you were 11. Now this is not to generalize this badass, cause theres a REASON everyone loves it. People go apeshit over anything moon oriented, you telling me this pitch black dope-ass fox has glowing rings of gold and blood red eyes? Only appears if it trusts you with its entire soul under the cover of darkness?? Will fight for you and guard your grave for millenia? Hell yeah dude, of COURSE people love this guy
Glaceon #471. Ice.
not my favorite │ average │ cute │ adorable │ best │ ultimate fave
I like glaceon, glaceon is cool, but suffered for being paired with Leafeon because its not as cool as Leafeon. Now this is 100% my personal bias for all things forest related and I admit that, because at its base the ice design is very smooth and cool and I love the whole head design of the creature. Would have liked to have seen more fluff and like ice shards sticking off the body in my person opinion. Glassy ice coated or even milky white eyes would have been a dope bonus.
Leafeon #470. Grass.
not my favorite │ average │ cute │ adorable │ best │ ultimate fave
Fuck yeah dude. I love Leafeon. I love all things nature related and its got a GREAT design! It’s 3D models kind of suck but its 2D art is amazing! With the gradient of the Leaf ears and tail and the great un-symmetrical detail on the leaves! The colors overall and the eyes! Love this little forest spirit, I trust this creature. 10/10 would follow it into the fae realm
Espeon #196. Psychic.
not my favorite │ average │ cute │ adorable │ best │ ultimate fave
Espeon is cool but again suffered for me with who it was paired with because Umbreon was CLEARLY my pick and I never gave Espeon much of a shake unless my goal was to get all the eeveeloutions. Espeons presence in Pokemon Colosseum is what made me like them way more, as starting with them both was extremely cool. very smooth elegant lady who absolutely absorbs all the details around her but doesnt do anything with the information unless it suits her purposes. Be careful with what you share with her, she aient gonna gossip but it WILL hurt you if she desires so.
Sylveon #700. Fairy.
not my favorite │ average │ cute │ adorable │ best │ ultimate fave
Everyone loves Sylveon, a really great fairy type that came with no partner when announced but stood out all on its own. Would have liked to see it counterbalanced with a Dragon type eevee but we can’t have everything. Colors were absolutely amazing and I am in love with the dynamic ribbons that flow all around it, makes it appears very mystical while still being inviting! (Like a fairy!) Great color choice for everything including the eyes and one was really important to a lot of people. I too really enjoy Sylveon.

It’s The Road You Choose (Nothing But My Friends Besides Me: TSS Pokemon AU)
The second in a series of related one-shots taking place in my Pokemon AU, Nothing But My Friends Besides Me, or NBMFBM! You can read the first part here! (Also, I messed around with how you get the Eeveeloutions for the sake of this story. You get all of them from stones now, like with the Gen1 Eeveeloutions.) Summary: The second semester at the Trainer’s School is finally over. Now it’s time for Virgil and his classmates Patton, Logan, Roman, Dee, Thomas and Remy to choose what their Eevees will evolve into. Of course, things are never that simple. Virgil POV, angst with a happy ending. Pairings: None yet, they’re still just kids :)
Warnings: Dee tells lies and is a jerk in a petty childish way, anxious thoughts/anxiety attacks, references to being orphaned/familial death, self-deprecation, sensory onslaught, Roman calls Virgil a name, Virgil hates Dee’s guts, food/drink mention, Virgil breaks down crying at one point Word Count: 2, 932 ~
“Congratulations, you seven! I’m pleased to announce that all of you have passed your second semester.” Professor Picani clapped his hands together. “The graduation ceremony will be on Thursday, as you know, so make sure you have all of your bags packed by then. It also means you all have a few days to consider, if you have not already, which form you will be evolving your Eevee into.”
Roman, Patton and Thomas burst into excited chatter the moment Picani stopped talking. The professor wisely let them have a moment before he clapped for their attention and they fell silent.
(Well, Roman nearly didn’t stop talking, but Logan kicked his chair and shot him a glare that could curdle Moo-Moo Milk, so he shut up.)
“One thing I should clarify is that, according to the school’s tradition, only one of you may pick a particular form.”
The class is suddenly completely silent.
“There will only be one of each evolution stone at the graduation. Your order will be randomly chosen, just like when you first choose your partners. Once one of the stones is gone, it is gone. However, since there is nine stones, even the trainer who goes last will have a choice of at least three different forms.”
Virgil sucked in a ragged breath as the classroom erupted into chaos around him. Roman was shouting. Patton was talking to Thomas. Logan was asking Picani if he could see who had placed in the top three spots in the course. Remy was complaining about something. At least two of the Eevees were barking.
Warm fur rubbed against Virgil’s leg as Stormy peered up at him with big, dark eyes, ears pricked forwards with worry. Letting out a shaky exhale, he let Stormy jump into his lap and curl up against him, sinking his fingers into soft grey fur as he counted out his breathing pattern under his breath. Somehow, Stormy always knew when his trainer was getting anxious and had swiftly settled into the additional role of an emotional support Pokemon not long after first bonding with Virgil.
“Good job, Virgil!” Patton sat on Virgil’s desk with enough force to make it rock a bit, making the emo’s head jerk up with shock.
“W-What?” He stutters, leaning away from Patton in an attempt at recovering his personal space.
“You placed third in the class, after me and Logan.” Thomas informed him with a small smile.
“Logan and I.” Logan corrected Thomas’ grammar from over his shoulder, still staring at the board where their final results were displayed.
Virgil blew his bangs out of his face (he didn’t like paying for haircuts often, they were too expensive) and scanned the board himself. Sure enough, he’d placed in the top half of the class, just below Thomas. Suck it, Roman.
“Cool.” He shifted his attention back to Stormy, who was pawing at his chest in an attempt to get more affection.
“So, what stone are you thinking of picking?” Thomas asks Patton, who perked up with a grin.
“The Shiny Stone! I really want a Sylveon.”
“You wanted Sylveon too? My dear Patton, you have good taste! I daresay it would suit you wonderfully.” Roman announced, standing on a chair. His own Eevee was perched on his outstretched arm, chirping excitedly.
“Oh, but Roman, if you want it I can pick something else-” Patton, bless his soft heart, tried to protest. Roman doesn’t let him get that far.
“Nonsense! Patton, should I have anything to say about it, that Shiny Stone is yours. I shall be equally content with the Fire Stone, to match my blazing passion!”
“The flamboyant and aggressive nature of a Fire type would suit you well, Roman.” Logan intoned, folding his hands behind his back.
“Ooh, Logan! What stone are you looking at picking?” Patton grinned, (finally!) hopping off of Virgil’s desk. The emo breathed a sigh of relief at the return of his personal bubble.
“The Dawn Stone. Espeon are graceful, calm and highly intelligent.” Logan explained. At his feet, Logan's own Eevee trilled happily, oversized ears twitching.
“What about you, Thomas?”
“I’m actually looking at the Everstone.” Thomas rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “I just love my little guy so much and neither of us really want him to evolve.”
“Awww, that’s so cute, Thomas!” Patton squealed.
“And you, Remy?” Roman asked.
“I don’t know, gurl. Haven’t really thought about it, ya’know?”
“Oh! What about you, Virgil?” Patton asked.
Virgil bit his lip. None of the others had said they wanted the same Stone as him, so it should be fine, right?
“I want an Umbreon, so the Dusk Stone.”
“Of course you would want a Dark type, Para-morose.”
“Now Roman, be nice.” Patton chided gently.
“Did you know that a shiny Umbreon’s rings are blue instead of yellow?” Logan ignored them to address Virgil.
“Yeah, actually. I think it’s pretty cool.”
“Well then!” Roman pouted, turning the conversation away from Virgil. “What about you, Dee?”
“Oh, I’m not quite sure which stone I want just yet.” Dee told them. Something in Virgil’s gut felt cold as he listened to the other boy talk. “Now that I know which stones you all want, though, I’ll make sure to adjust my choices accordingly.”
Virgil shuffled further down into his seat, pulling Stormy closer to him. If there was one classmate he never wanted to see again after graduation, it was Dee. He was even worse than Roman. Knowing his luck, though, he'd encounter the filthy liar in every Pokémon Center he visited on his journey.
The day of graduation dawned bright and clear, a sharp contrast to the day they had picked their Pokemon partners. Virgil had spent days packing and unpacking his travel bags, doing his best to decide what he could afford to carry with him. He’d already sold off most of his books and school supplies, and he’d sell off more when he made it to a bigger city. Renting a storage space would be too expensive on his meager budget, so he would be carrying his life on his back.
Stormy pranced around his feet, enjoying the warm sunshine, nearly tripping Virgil several times as he made his way to the graduation ceremony. The weather was shaping up nicely this spring. Virgil prayed to every deity he could think of that the good weather would hold for his first seasons as a trainer. He liked the rain a lot better from inside.
The ceremony is only about an hour in all, but to Virgil it feels as though it should be dark outside by the time he escapes the stuffy heat and stares. The precious papers of certification are tucked safely into his bag, his only formal insurance against whatever the future might throw at him.
(He spends most of that hour trying to ignore the fact that nobody in the audience is there for him. He ignores the fact that the only camera flashing when he walks up to accept his diploma in the hired photographer for the event. He pretends it doesn’t hurt like an icy blade through his heart when the others all gleefully run off the stage into the waiting arms of parents and family and each other and he slips silently off into the background, all alone save for Stormy trotting at his heels and a lone tear on his cheek.)
And then it was time for them to pick their Evolution Stones.
Virgil shows up early, already fully packed and too nervous to linger over his last school-provided meal. He watches the others trail in, Remy clutching an iced coffee, Dee’s face carefully neutral and composed, Patton bouncing with barely contained anticipation. Professor Picani makes a brief speech explaining how the selection process works, but Virgil swears he can only hear buzzing in his ears. They all know the selection of evolution stones and their respective outcomes by heart by now, even Remy who barely scraped together a passing grade to graduate. Picani briefly chokes back some tears and says some cheesy lines about he thinks they’re one of the most memorable classes he’s ever taught (Virgil doubts Picani will remember his name in five months) but finally, finally, the time comes for the names to be picked, all seven boys leaning forwards in their seats like racehorses awaiting the start of a race.
“Thomas!” Picani announces, and the boy jumps out of his seat with an excited shout. He makes a dash for the door at the end of the hall, nearly tripping over his Eevee’s tail as he tosses an excited wave over his shoulder at the others.
“C’mon, buddy! I’ll see you guys later at the party!” And just like that, he’s gone.
Virgil doesn’t truly relax, per se, but he settles in for a long wait as Picani disappears into the room after Thomas. Roman brushes his Eevee’ fur, paying special attention to the heart-shaped pattern on her tail. Patton badgers Logan with questions about things he’s read, but Logan seems more than happy to talk about the intricacies of why ailments like confusion aren’t true status conditions. Remy stirs the ice in his drink, looking bored.
Logan’s name is drawn next, only about ten minutes after Thomas. Virgil keeps his anxiety at bay by reminding himself that both Thomas and Logan were dead-set on their choices and by stroking Stormy’s fur as he dozes in Virgil’s lap.
Roman goes next, giving Patton a high-five and a smile on his way out. Virgil tries to estimate the time- Thomas only took about ten minutes, but Logan must have taken fifteen.
Roman, of course, takes twenty-five.
Remy goes next, complaining to Picani about how all of the ice in his drink has long since melted as he leaves, and Virgil tries his best not to fidget too badly as Remy’s turn drags them well over the hour mark. He takes some small comfort in the fact that Patton too, can barely stay in his seat.
Dee is smirking. Virgil tries not to stare. The other boy is too calm, too smug, his hands folded neatly into his lap, his Eevee tucked into her Pokeball. It’s getting on Virgil’s nerves.
That smirk fades as Patton is called next. Dee refuses to look at Virgil for the twenty minutes it takes for Picani to reappear, and Virgil picks at his nails and does his best to staunchly ignore both his anxiety and his remaining classmate.
“Dee!” Picani reads the slip of paper aloud and Virgil’s breath get caught in his throat. Because Dee is smirking again, right at him, and Virgil knows with a sudden and chilling certainty that there won’t be a Dusk Stone left for Stormy.
It’s gone.
Of course it is. He knew it would be. He’d spent the last half an hour convincing himself that maybe it still would be, that he was overreacting, that maybe for once everything would be okay but of course it wasn’t-
Stormy lets out a sad whine at the sight of the three remaining stones set out on the table, pressing close against Virgil’s ankle. The emo wastes no time scooping up his partner into his arms. A sob catches in his throat, a horrible sound. Stormy buries his face into Virgil’s hoodie and Virgil buries his in Stormy’s monochromatic fur, shame and guilt welling up inside him. It doesn’t make any sense, there was nothing he could have done to stop it- but he can’t help feeling as though he’s failed his little Stormcloud, somehow. Gosh, he was always destined to screw up sooner or later, wasn’t he?
“Would you like some time alone?” Professor Picani asks, soft and quiet. The door back to the hall clicks shut softly behind him. Virgil can’t bring himself to respond, choking on sobs trying to escape. He makes a silent nod instead, hoping Picani couldn’t see the tears already staining his face.
“I’m sorry, Virgil. Graduation day is supposed to be exciting, and happy... I know you had your heart set on the Dusk Stone, but I can’t change school rules.”
Virgil just sniffed and nodded before sinking to his knees, feeling Stormy hiccup against his chest. Footsteps left the room, leaving them in relative silence except for Virgil’s quiet sobs and sniffles accompanied by Stormy’s tiny, pathetic mewls and whimpers.
It’s not fair. It’s never fair. It wasn’t fair that Virgil’s parents died and then his grandpa did too, leaving him alone to fend for himself. It wasn’t fair that Virgil had to worry over how much money he spent while the other kids went out for ice cream. It wasn’t fair that he had to worry about having a roof over his head, about his entire future, while the other kids complained about homework and chores. It wasn’t fair, it wasn’t fair, it wasn’t fair and it hurt and for once Virgil just wanted things to go his way. It wasn’t fair that he was walking bad luck, and it definitely wasn’t fair that Stormy got caught up in that, too.
They sat there for a long time as Virgil cried and cried until Stormy tried to lick the tears off Virgil’s cheek, which startled a laugh out of him. He tries to wipe the tears off Stormy’s back with the sleeve of his hoodie, but he’s pretty sure he just makes his grey fur stick up funny.
“I guess we’d better pick something, huh?” He said quietly, opening his arms to allow Stormcloud to step out to the ground. The shiny Eevee only snuggled in closer. Virgil huffed out a half-laugh and stood up, clutching his only friend to his chest.
“So we’ve got...” He scanned over the remaining stones, careful not to hold Stormy too close to any of them. “The Leaf Stone, Water Stone and Thunder Stone.”
He paused, trying to recall all he could about those specific evolutions. Try as he might, he couldn’t imagine which one he could possibly pick. He couldn’t even remember what their shiny variants looked like.
“This one’s yours, Stormy.” He murmured. The grey Eevee trilled at him, lifting his head a little more to peek out of Virgil’s arms.
“I mean, it’s your choice, right? I know we both wanted Umbreon, but that’s not going to happen, so... Leafeons are pretty calm, I think? Would you like that?” Stormy shook his head like he was ridding it of water, making no move to leave Vigil’s arms.
“Okaaaaay...” Virgil changed tactics. “Jolteon, then? They have a lot more energy, normally, but then you could be a lightning Storm. What do you think?”
Stormy pinned his ears back, claws digging into Virgil’s sleeves.
“Okay, okay. Do you want to be a Vaporeon then? I don’t know what the shiny version looks like, but you could be a rain Storm instead of a lightning Storm? Since we both like your name as it is...”
Stormy paused for a long moment, then stretched out one paw to tap on the container holding the Water Stone.
“Okay, hang on.” Virgil set his Eevee down, then opened the case and set the Water stone on the ground in front of him. “Here you go, buddy. All yours. I love you.”
The words slip out without him meaning to- he hasn’t spoken them in a long time, not since he lost his family, but it feels like it’s long overdue. Stormy deserves to hear them said.
He sits back on his heels and watches Stormy purr cheerfully at him one last time as an Eevee.
(Last night, he’d carefully clipped off a piece of Stormy’s soft grey fluff and tucked it into the pages of his journal, knowing he’d miss the softness and colour of it one day.) He was ready.
Stormy clearly was too, as he pressed one paw firmly down onto the evolution stone. His big eyes stare into the stone like it holds secrets he wants to learn, and Virgil watches until the growing light is so blinding he can’t anymore.
When the brilliant glow finally dissipates and Virgil blinks the stars out of his eyes, he can’t hold back his delighted gasp.
Stormy was purple.
Stormy pauses in inspecting the new webbing between his toes at the sound. He gives his new aquatic tail an experimental swish, and then launches himself at Virgil with a delighted cry.
The trainer lets out an OOF as his newly evolved Pokemon squashes the air out of his lungs. He’s not too much bigger yet, but he’s already heavier and stronger. Still, Virgil lets out a breathless chuckle as Stormcloud rubs his face against his trainer’s jaw. He runs his hands over Stormy’s back, scratching behind the ears, running his fingers along newly formed frills and fins.
“Look at how handsome you are.” Virgil would later never admit to cooing like an old lady with her Delcatty. “I’m so proud of you. You... you made a great choice.”
So maybe Vaporeon hadn’t been his first choice. So what? The universe seemed to like doing that to him. He didn’t want to be orphaned, or to have to pin all his hopes at a decent future on Trainer School, but he’d made it this far.
And sure, maybe soon he was going to shake Professor Picani’s hand and walk out into the dangerous world with no human soul to back him up-
But he’s always going to have Stormy by his side. And right now, he’s pretty sure he couldn’t ask for more.

3 of my favorite Pokemon (week 25)
1. Lycanroc
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Top to bottom: Midday, Dusk, Midnight
One of my favorite pokemon is Lycanroc. He is the evolved form of Rockruff and has three forms. These forms are Midnight, Midday, and Dusk. I love Lycanroc because he is so cute! He also is a rock type pokemon, go figure. Lycanroc/Rockruff was introduced in Generation VII (Sun and Moon - Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee)
2. Braixen
Tumblr media
My second favorite pokemon is a fire type fox named Braixen. It evolves from Fennikin at level 16 and evolves into Delphox at level 36. Braixen was introduced in Generation VI (Pokemon X and Y - Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire).
3. Eevee
Tumblr media
My third favorite is an adorable fluffball named Eevee. It has 8 "Eevee-loutions". There is Vaporeon (Water), Jolteon (Electric), Flareon (Fire), Espeon (Psychic), Umbreon (Dark), Leafeon (Grass), Glaceon (Ice), and Sylveon (Fairy). My two favorite eeveeloutions are... Jolteon and Flareon, since I love Fire and Electric type pokemon.

I made a fan Eeveeloution. It’s a ground type based on the red mud of Prince Edward Island. I call it Catlineon. It is obtained by levelling up an Eevee near a muddy rock.

Me and my friends were talking about the possibility of a Ghost-type Eeveeloution and we decided that it’s evolution stone would be a normal rock and it evolved by you bashing an Eevee over the head to kill it instantly

Okay, because @earthsong9405‘s blogging reminded me of it, my old list of MLP Teams needs updated, especially since it was made before Alola.
So, here’s the thing I always see with giving characters Pokemon Teams: they stick to one ‘type’. Now, who actually does that when they play? Nah, you get what you think is cool, and balance your teams if you’re smart.
So while I tried to keep to ‘types’, they also have some ‘themes’, or tossing out a theme altogether. And I sort of did the thing with their pets as well. But their ‘Companion Pokemon’ is something related to their Special Talent. I’ll list their team of 6, and some will get a ‘why they were chosen’ thing added. ·
Twilight’s Team- Some people make Spike as one of Twi’s Pokemon, but tbh he’s his own person with his own team. That said, her team is mostly Psychic Type, as it’s the closest to a ‘magic type’.
Espeon
Of course her Companion is a Psychic Type.
Rowlet
Newest member as  Owloysius
Lucario
Okay, Lucario really shoud be a Psychic/Fighting type. Like, Auras???? Using them to read minds???? Come on my dudes!!
Gardevoir
Probably a gift from Shining Armor, as it’s a Psychic Type and a protector
Alolan Raichu
Trevenant
Like, my guy, it’s a ghost tree. As soon as I found this I had to make a Golden Oaks reference.
Pinkie’s Team- Mostly Fairy Type, as they’re usually cute and pink. Pinkie would pick those ones, and I also associate her with Faerie things, so.....
Wigglytuff
It’s pink, likes singing, fluffy, and has an elastic-like body. It’s perfect for Pinkie. That, and she reminds me of Guildmaster Wigglytuff.
Croconaw
As Gummy, of course
Ninetails
As it’s based of Kitsune, which are trickster spirits, I feel it fits well.
Mimikyu
Fairy, Ghost, and in need of a smile!
Diance
Fairy and Rock, for the Rock Farm.
Primarina
Rarity’s Team- Her team is mostly pretty Pokemon, as she’s definitely a Coordinator.
Sableye
It’s a Gem Hunter Pokemon. Also, I love the idea of Rares having a ‘not traditionally pretty’ pokemon as her Companion, but she loves him all the same!
Purugly
Opal. Opal is very much a Purugly. Fat, angry, but very loved.
Minccino
Meowstic
So, personal headcanon is that Rares is actually a fairly powerful Unicorn, but she never had a reason to learn anything more advanced. So a powerful Psychic type is great for her.
Roserade
Aurorus
Applejack’s Team- Aj’s team is farm based. Like, farm animal Pokemon and the like.
Mudsdale
Weird that a horse has a horse, but a Draft Horse Pokemon is great for Cider season. And considering AJ’s talent was appearently ‘being an apple horse’.....
Rockruff
Winona, of course.
Gogoat
Milktank
Mareep
Emboar
Rainbow’s Team- Flying and Electric types mostly, as a Weather Managing Pegasus.
Staraptor
A flying type just as ‘Fight me” as Dash.
Turtwig
Her newest member, Tank.
Toucannon
Luxray
Emolga
Plusle
So, I actually came up with a story for this. One time Flutters was taking care of a Minun that got hurt, but it’s Plusle sister was upset. So Rainbow decided to help out by keeping her occupied while Flutters worked. And the two ended up bonding so much that she didn’t want to go back to the forest, asking Rainbow to keep her.
Fluttershy’s Team - Mostly healer/nurse types, but also has a few of her Animal Friends.
Blissey
A healing Pokemon, of course.
Buneary
For Angel
Audino
Ursaring
Kangaskhan
Minun
The same Minun that was with Rainbow’s Plusle. He wanted to stay with his sister, and she refused to leave him behind, so Flutters took him in.
Okay, done with the Mane Six. Let’s add a few other teams. Spike, Sunset, the CMC and the Royals!
Spike’s Team- Good couple of dragons or dragon-related ones.
Dragonair
A dragon, of course.
Grovyle
Eevee
will evolve into either a Flareon, or a Dragon type, as soon as a dragon Eeveeloution exists.
Delibird
Charmander
Still think Charizard should be a dragon type but it’s twenty one years too late.
Kirlia
A gift from Shining, like Twi’s Gardevoir.
Sunset’s Team - Psychic for Magic, Fire because Sunset, Ghost because, well, you know.
Delphox
A Fire/Psychic type, starting her team.
Talonflame
I still headcanon Philomena is hers
Alolan Marowak
Incineroar
Rapidash
Missmagius
Celestia’s Team -Sun-related, some darkness
Solgaleo
She can have a Legendary because she’s an Immortal.
Sunflora
Weavile
Shaymin
Beartic
Garchomp
Luna’s Team- mostly Ghost and Dark types.
Lunala
She’s an Immortal, she’s allowed.
Musharna
Umbreon
Absol
Honchkrow
Dusknoir
Cadence’s Team - some love-themed ones, or ones known for couples.
Sylveon
The ‘Intertwining Pokemon’
Swoobat
Milotic
Togekiss
Pachirisu
Sawsbuck
Shining’s Team - definitly Guard related. Fighting/Steel types.
Gallade
Psychic/Fighting that’s a protector? Perfect.
Escavalier
Aegislash
Golurk
Pangoro
Alolan Sandslash
Discord - No real ‘theme’, but he loves them so much.
Giratina
Tbh Giratina’s Disortion World sounds like a Chaos Dimension to me. Also, despite Giratina’s size, he absolutely treats it like a small puppy, much to the confusion of everyone.
Gengar
Mawile
Mimikyu
Because it needs a friend and he relates!
Zoroark
Serperior
Applebloom’s Team - mostly Steel and ground types
Drilbur
Because I still think her talent should’ve been building.
Eevee
Will evolve into Leafeon
Phanpy
Mudkip
Klang
Togedemaru
Sweetie’s Team - Cute but kicks butt.
Chatot
Song buddies!
Eevee
will evolve into Vaporeon
Buizel
Cubchoo
Froslass
Ducklett
Scootaloo -likes flying and elecrics, like Dash, but has her own thing.
Pikipek
Starts small and cute, but will become a big fighter
Eevee
will evolve into a Jolteon
Natu
Aipom
Joltik
Pidove
Big Mac’s Team - A bit of farm-related, but a lot of big ones. All sweethearts though.
Torterra
Ground and grass and big.
Tauros
Bewear
Herdier
Grumpig
Diggersby
Diamond Tiara- pretty pokemon, as her mom wanted her to be a coordinator(she likes it, but she likes regular battling too!). Loves them a lot
Cleffa
Rare and cute, is a star
Glaceon
Swablu
Marill
Shiny Litwick
Oricorio

I’m normally not big on fakemon, but I kind of figure that more eeveeloutions will be inevitable in the future. So here’s my take on the missing types. I'd also like to see them have some more varied body types beyond "standard cat"
Enteon- Bug, inspired by the poodle moth (which in itself looks like a pokemon)
Phanteon- Ghost, loses it legs, but gains the ability to phase through solid objects
Aileron - Flying, play on words of real thing
Toxeon- Poison, I think this one is my least favorite…
Sandeon, Ground, lives in the desert. Spends most of it life digging complex tunnel systems
Draceon- Dragon, I originally went for more of a western dragon look, but pokemon seems to have a severe lack of eastern looking dragons (I can only think of 4 or 5 off the top of my head)
Litheon- Rock, heavy set, tends to rely on brute strength instead of strategy
Fisteon- Fighting, Has a long, afghan-like coat that resembles a karate uniform. Perhaps the tail changes color depending on level? (black being the strongest)
Ferreon- Steel, Has massive, beartrap-like jaws. Often used as guard dogs.
