ribosome fun fact #15
ribosomes are what differentiates the smooth endoplasmic reticulum with no ribosomes :( from the rough endoplasmic reticulum which has ribosomes :D

How to learn biology diagrams
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For example this is the diagram you have to learn so you can learn it like-
Each cell has a protective outer layer (plasma membrane) , so the cell only lets some certain things or nutrients into the system that it needs but keeps other things out (semipermeable).
Inside the animal cell there is the digestive system (cytoplasm), in the digestive system there is the working organs (organelles).
Tiny grains floating inside the system are called (ribosome) where protein is made.
The cell also has a DNA (nucleus) that contains all are genetic information the DNA is found on structures of the cell (nucleus) called chromosomes .
The nucleus is surrounded by a layer or cover (nuclear membrane) which controls what goes in and out.
Rough ER is a series of folded protective outer layer (membrane) rough ER is always spotted with the tiny grains floating around the system (ribosomes). Together the ribosomes and rough ER make new proteins and protective layer (membranes) that the system or cell needs.
While smooth ER is the opposite, it has vehicles which are used to move things around the digestive system (transport vesicles).
Now there is another working organ which helps in packaging up things, to be transported around cells or need to leave the cell like hormones (Golgi Apparatus).
Now comes lysosomes, lysosomes are both the vitamin c and the decomposer of the cell. It kills the bacteria that invades the body and it also break downs the THINGS that cell doesn 't need.
Vacuoles are large membranous sacs used to store things. While vesicles are smaller sacs.
Mitochondria is the powerhouse that breaks down sugar (ATP) which helps the cell get energy .

This classical distinction applies best to certain cell types, such as in floral glands producing nectar (see Figure 1.33), which, if secreting lipid, contain much smooth tubular ER and, if secreting protein, contain rough cisternal ER. (...) Leucoplasts in specialized secretory tissues, such as the nectary, make monoterpenoids (see Figure 1.33), volatile molecules (in essential oils) that often have a strong smell.
Tumblr media
The floral nectary of the Abutilon flower (see Figure 1.33A) has epidermal pavement cells and multicellular secretory trichomes (see Figure 1.33B), which end in a final hemispherical cap cell. Ultrastructurally, this cap cell is quite interesting (see Figure 1.33C), being connected to the underlying cells by many plasmodesmata (see Figure 1.33D and E) and containing considerable endoplasmic reticulum, both smooth ER in tubular form and rough ER in cisternal form. The smooth ER is probably involved in the synthesis of lipid included in the cap cell secretions (see Figure 1.33B), while the rough ER supports the synthesis of special proteins for the secretions. (...) The walls surrounding the trichome are cut off from the rest of the wall spaces, or apoplast, of the tissue by a thick ring cutin at the base of the trichome, thereby isolating the secretions from the apoplast of the rest of the tissue (see Figure 1.33F).

The distinction between rough and smooth ER is sometimes correlated with changes in the form of the ER, rough ER being cisternal, and smooth ER being tubular.

Lester headcanon time
You know how the average human body is Quite Strong? Like you have to hold back to do normal every day tasks. And it can do even more than what you'd think of as giving it your all, it's just prevented subconsciously because it causes damage?
I like to think that apollo got a lot of scars during his first few months as Lester, not from epic battles, but just sucking at gross motor control and common sense (so me fr) so here's some incidents:
Gripping a glass too hard
Picking up pieces of that glass with bare hands
Fiddling with an aluminium can
Putting his fingers too close to a Meg
Slashing his hands while pulling off the lid of a ring pull tin
Grabbing the lid of a tin to pick it up
I had more but I forgot bc I'm fucking exhausted I'll come back and do more another day

Hey everyone! I know I've been quiet for a while now, but since it's now December, I wanted to express how grateful I am for all the support I have been given this year. This year has been uniquely hard for me, recovering from poor surgery last Dec, finishing grad school (and student loan payments looming), moving to a new state, Fiddlesticks becoming sick and passing, having a revision surgery to try and fix the one from last year (and still recovering from the revision). I've felt like I've lost so much this year, and it's just been really rough. Still, I am so happy to still have the people I do here and the handful of good friends I have made through running this blog! It means more to me than I could ever say!
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart! 💜 I want nothing more than for everyone to have a better 2024, and we hear news about V10. ;)

i wish there was a workbook/zine/other resource for chronically suicidal ppl with advice about how to gauge what a "crisis" looks like *specifically* for chronically suicidal suicidal ppl. so many of the mental health resources i see use "crisis" almost interchangeably with suicidality, where suicidality always represents a crisis/tipping point/"the worst things can get." but suicidality alone is not a good gauge of crisis for chronically suicidal ppl! those of us surviving chronic suicidality might need to get more specific about what a crisis would look like for us, whether that's passive suicidality moving into active suicidality or it's certain levels of planning for death being done (ie, writing a note/buying a means of suicide/giving away belongings).
i am well-aware of the pitfalls of comparing physical illnesses to mental illnesses (and also aware of the false dichotomy between the two), but i often think of how ppl living with chronic physical pain talk about having a different "pain scale" compared to people who live without chronic pain — for chronically ill ppl, the level of pain that would drive them to go to the ER is much higher than someone who doesn't live with chronic pain, bc they're aware of the limitations of what the medical system can do for them and also how much medical trauma they risk by going. i think something similar occurs with chronically suicidal ppl, where a "crisis" that might drive someone who is not typically suicidal to the ER is for us just another day, or just a bad day. but then i think we are left without the tools to articulate what a crisis actually constitutes for us, and in what situations the potential psych trauma of presenting at a medical institution would outweigh the trauma of suffering another crisis alone. or in what situations it's worth it to reach out to friends/peers/other supports if you "know" you're able to weather this crisis the way you've weathered all the others, even though you're alone & in distress. when the baseline becomes just "staying alive," & you know you can achieve that, despite the immense amounts of pain it takes to do so, how do you convince yourself to reach out? when is the level of your pain worth "worrying others" over when you know you can stay alive through it?

The region of the ER that has many membrane-bound ribosomes is called rough ER because the bound ribosomes give the ER a rough appearance in electron micrographs (see Figure 1.13A and B). ER without bound ribosomes is called smooth ER (see Figure 1.13C).
