Animal Justice Project claims that far from roaming freely, “these hens were trapped within overcrowded sheds with their basic needs neglected”. The rules also state that farms can house up to 2,500 birds per hectare. But the organisation says that in reality, that means up to 16,000 hens can be crammed into a shed.
That equates to nine hens per square metre – or the equivalent of putting 14 people in a one-bedroom flat. As a result of the Animal Justice Project probe, the RSPCA suspended the three farms from its assurance scheme, pending an investigation, saying it was “extremely concerned” by the “upsetting” footage.
Since I can't be bothered to say the whole lgbtqia+ acronym and also can't remember the word gay or queer sometimes, I am going to just say the first acronym that I can think of and call it a day
Unfortunately the RSPCA as an organisation are really interested in the welfare of companion animals. They have a vested interest in animal agriculture through the funding they receive from animal exploiting corporations, and can’t be trusted to look after the interests of the animals whose exploitation they profit from. They do great work for companion animals, but not for anyone else. I’ve a separate article on that here.
As for vegan organisations, there is no one doing precisely the same thing for all animals, though there are plenty of animal sanctuaries engaged in the rescue and care of farmed animals. My advice is always to get involved locally and support local charities if you can.
