2023 International Rural Women's Day Commemoration Seminar.
Tumblr media
According to the latest FAO report, women play a crucial role in agricultural and non-agricultural activities, which emerge as agrifood systems develop and economies change. There, women work as farmers, retailers, wage laborers, entrepreneurs, among other tasks. However, gender inequalities in agrifood systems cause women to be disproportionately affected by food and nutritional insecurity, monetary and time poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In view of this situation, the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, in the framework of the Commemoration of the International Day of Rural Women and the strengthening of its program for the economic empowerment of this group, invites counterparts from government, civil society, academia, private sector and UN agencies to discuss and propose strategies for closing gender gaps in agrifood systems, during a seminar to be held in hybrid format on October 10, 2023, in Santiago, Chile.
Objectives
The seminar will seek to provide a regional overview of the advances and challenges that promote or obstruct the economic empowerment of rural women in all their diversity, and will make recommendations to strengthen the economic empowerment program for rural women and generate inputs for the FAO Regional Conference -LARC 38, the Regional Conference of ECLAC-UNWomen, among other initiatives within the framework of the rural women's agenda in the region.
During the seminar, examples of legislation, policies and programs will be presented with a focus on what has worked and specific recommendations will be shared on how to make more and better interventions with and for rural women. From a vision of collective action, the seminar will seek to generate alliances and identify strategies and interventions with scalability potential, based on the agenda of rural women in the region, to accelerate their economic, social and political empowerment.
Methodology
The Seminar will begin with welcoming remarks by FAO, followed by thematic talks that will delve into the central aspects of sustainable rural development from a transformative gender equality approach, followed by a space for guided reflection, and ending with a session of agreements and closing. The interventions will incorporate success stories and review the strategies mobilized to bring about the necessary change towards an egalitarian welfare state.
The seminar will be simultaneously interpreted from Spanish into English and Portuguese.

Best Practices for Rural Women Empowermen
Rural women face distinct problems and hurdles to empowerment all across the world. There are, nevertheless, a number of best practices that may be put in place to support their rights, well-being, and socioeconomic growth. Here are a few major tactics and efforts that have proven to be successful:
Access to Education and Skill Training: It is critical to provide excellent education and skill training options for rural women in order to empower them. Establishing schools and vocational training facilities in rural areas, as well as guaranteeing gender-sensitive curricula and addressing cultural barriers, can assist women in acquiring knowledge and developing skills that improve their economic prospects and decision-making capacities.
Economic Empowerment through Livelihood initiatives: Putting in place income-generating initiatives that are tailored to the requirements of rural women can have a substantial impact on their economic empowerment. Microfinance, entrepreneurial training, cooperative farming, and access to capital and markets all help women start and sustain their own companies, boosting their financial independence and general well-being.
Leadership and Participation: It is critical to promote women's leadership and participation in decision-making processes at all levels. Encouragement of women's participation in local government, community organizations, and cooperatives allows them to express their concerns, influence policies, and contribute to the development of their communities. Leadership and advocacy training programs can also help them gain confidence and capacity.
Access to Healthcare and Reproductive Rights: It is critical for rural women's empowerment to ensure that healthcare services, especially reproductive health, are accessible and affordable. Creating clinics, deploying mobile healthcare units, and educating community health workers can enhance women's health outcomes, lower maternal mortality, and empower women to make educated decisions about their reproductive rights and family planning.
We can build an enabling climate that empowers rural women, promotes gender equality, and unlocks their full potential as change agents in their communities and beyond by implementing these best practices. Empowering rural women benefits not only their lives but also the broader development and prosperity of societies.
At Geetanjali Care we go above and beyond to help rural women and make this world a better place for them by providing opportunities and skills.

Highlight the importance of women in the sustainability of mountain areas.
Tumblr media
Every year, International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8 March.
The theme for International Women’s Day on 2022 (IWD 2022) is, “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, recognising the contribution of women and girls, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all.
This coincides with the fact that the United Nations General Assembly has designated 2022 as the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development. In addition, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations will dedicate the next International Mountain Day, on 11 December 2022, to the theme of Women move mountains. This year the focus is on the key role that women play in environmental protection and social and economic development in mountain areas.
In line with all this, MOVING (Mountain Valorisation through Interconnectedness and Green growth) is a Horizon 2020 project (2020-2024) that aims to build capacities and co-develop policy frameworks across Europe for the establishment of new or improved Value Chains (VCs), contributing to resilience and sustainability of mountain areas, valorising local assets, and delivering private and public goods.
For MOVING, gender equality is a key element in its research and innovation activities. The project aims to ensure and promote gender equality in different aspects related to research and management. Gender and age dimensions are key components of the human and social capital of mountain areas, these are therefore used as main parameters in the vulnerability assessment of the 23 VCs of the Reference Regions.
Young people and women are considered drivers of change in the mountain framework, specific actions have been defined to guarantee their active engagement in the co-design of potential measures and to enhance their role in the mountain regions. The research questions for the 23 case studies, and for cross-case comparisons, will address specifically the issues of barriers faced by young people and women in the access to markets and resources.
Gender has also been taken into account on the constitution of the MOVING Community of Practice (CoP). The MOVING CoP is an European-wide Science-Society-Policy interface built upon:
23 regional Multi-Actor Platforms (MAPs) established in the 23 Reference Regions
1 European-level Multi-Actor Platform (EU MAP)
External actors
The CoP has set itself the target that at least 25% of the members of the CoP will be women. As of today, putting together the number of members of the regional MAPs, MOVING has 524 stakeholders of which 69% are men and 31% are women. As regards the EU MAP, there are a total of 44 members, of which 55% are women and 45% are men.
The project will keep working on the identification and involvement of women in all its activities.
