⛧Chapter 1: Rye Whiskey The door slams shut behind you and you let out a sigh of relief, another show is finally over. After taking a seat in front of your vanity, you turn on the small television in your dressing room. You’ve been on tour for the past year and a half, playing at different venues, private events, and more. Today was the final show and you gave it all you had, the crowd seemed pleased. Even though you almost collapsed at the end of the performance, everything worked out in your favor. It's getting late so you pour yourself a glass of whiskey and take a sip. Being a Jazz singer isn't all it's cracked up to be. Sure the fame and free drinks are nice, but the men are pigs. Just because you dance around in skimpy clothes and sing love songs doesn't mean you’re going to go home with whoever flashes a stack of cash your way. Suddenly a familiar voice shakes you from your thoughts. An odd commercial plays on the TV and you almost spit out your drink. Your soft ears perk up and twitch and your tail flicks from side to side. “Do you like blood, violence, and depravity of a sexual nature? Of course, you do! That's why you’re in hell! But what would you say if I told you there was a place to stay that had none of that? Welcome to the Hazbin Hotel, a misguided path to redemption! Founded five days ago by Lucifer’s delusional daughter, Charlotte Morningstar. Come place your fate in her inexperienced hands as she tries to work through her daddy issues by fixing you! Here we offer fun things such as…Somewhat functional staff and 24-hour pest control! Custom rooms and just look at this parlor! Enjoy a Riveting conversation with our singular resident! Wow! All this and more at the Hazbin Hotel! Your last desperate attempt at salvation starts here!” That voice is unmistakable, but part of you can’t believe it’s true. Has Alastor really come back? Is he staying at this strange hotel? So many unanswered questions. You had a history with the infamous Radio Demon. A past you thought would never see the light of day. It was long before you found your passion for music, in a time when you thought nothing would make you happy.
Alastor used to be your beau once upon a time. You both used to be so undoubtedly in love with each other. He used to sweep you off your feet and make you feel like the most beautiful thing in all of Hell. But that was a long time ago, and Alastor might not be the same guy you used to know, seven years is enough time to change a person. He was the one who broke it off, stating that he had some business to deal with. He was vague and aloof, he said he couldn’t stick around and keep you, that it would be unfair of him to make you wait. You told him it didn't matter to you, that you would wait for his return. He told you that he might not return at all, kissed your hand, and left you there in the rain.
You finished off the last of your drink, there was no way you could stay in the dressing room tonight. If there was even the slightest chance that you could see Alastor again you had to go. So you changed out of your stage clothes into a black dress, one that hugs your curves rather nicely. You put on a pair of knee high boots and your black lapel. After deciding to keep the pearl necklace and earrings on, you check your makeup in the mirror and grab your duffle bag before leaving your dressing room. The streets of Pentagram City were alive with debauchery and sin. Sinners were partying, gambling, and fucking their cares away. With a lit cigarette between your lips you walk for a while, heels clacking against the sidewalk. Your eyes scan the billboards, hoping to find any sign of the hotel. A few ads pop up for a porn studio where your dear friend works. She used to sing with you until she decided to get into the adult entertainment business. You don’t mind, as long as she's happy, then so are you.
Your train of thought is derailed when the image changes on the billboard. It now shows the Hazbin Hotel with a very familiar face standing outside, holding a sign and smiling brightly. Your eyes widen and you feel a tightening sensation in your chest, that smile. You had seen it countless times in the past, that charming, dashing smile.
The billboard changes once again and a phone number flashes on the screen. You reach into your pocket and grab your cell phone. Dialing the number, you take a drag from your cigarette and hold the phone to your ear. After a few rings, a woman picks up and greets you. “Hello! Hazbin Hotel, How can I help you?” She is so cheerful it's almost disgusting. “Hi there. I was wondering if you had rooms available?” There's a short pause and some shuffling on the other line, the woman speaks again. "Oh my goodness! Yes, we have plenty of rooms available!"
You take another drag from your cigarette and speak again, "Can I check-in tonight? I'm actually in the city and-"
"Oh my, yes of course! Let me get you the address.”
"Great, thank you." You reply. The cheerful woman gives you the address and you end the call. You take one last puff off your cigarette and stomp it out. With the location committed to memory, you make your way to the hotel.
The hotel is quite large, standing out against the dim and drab streets. A smile spreads across your face and you walk up the steps. The moment you open the door a small woman dressed in a maids uniform greets you.
"Welcome to the Hazbin Hotel! I'm Nifty! And you must be a new guest!" She looks a bit disheveled and her eyes are wide. “Hello there Nifty,” You bend down and get on her level and smile at her. “My name is Violet. It's a pleasure to meet you, dear.” She squeals and grabs your hand, practically dragging you inside. Nifty points to the bar and introduces Husker the bartender as a “grumpy kitty”. You nod your head in agreement and follow her through the lobby. You walk up to the bar and give Husker a big smile. He grunts at you but returns your smile nonetheless. Nifty pulls out a stool and you set your bag down and take a seat.  “I’m going to go find Charlie for you, I’ll be right back!” Nifty exclaims as she runs off towards the elevator. You watch as the elevator doors close behind her. “What'll it be, Miss?” Husker asks in a gruff voice. He notices you have the same kind of features as Alastor, fluffy deer ears, a tail, and a toothy grin. “Rye whiskey, on the rocks if you have it.” You ask and Husker turns around to make it for you. Oddly enough you drink the same kind of Liquor as Alastor too. Just as Husker slides the drink over to you, the sound of heels clicking against the marble floor catches your attention. You glance up and there she is—Charlie. The woman who now owns and runs this peculiar establishment. Her smile is warm and welcoming as she approaches you, her red curls bouncing with every step. “Violet, I presume?” she says, extending a hand towards you. You take it, feeling a sense of relief wash over you. “That's me,” you reply with a soft smile. “It's quite a place you have here.” Charlie's eyes twinkle with pride as she looks around the bustling lobby. “Thank you! We do our best to make everyone feel welcome and offer a chance at redemption.” You can't help but admire her determination and genuine desire to help others. “You mentioned having a room available?” You ask and take a sip of your drink. “Oh yes! Here, take this.” She says and hands you a key. “You’re on the third floor, room 103. We can talk more tomorrow, it's getting late and I’m sure you would like to turn in for the night.” You thank Charlie, Nifty and Husk before making your way to the elevator. The ride up to the third floor is smooth, and as the doors open, you're greeted by a quiet hallway lined with ornate wallpaper and dimly lit lamps. Room 103 is at the end of the hallway, and you feel a mix of nerves and excitement as you approach the door. The key slides in easily, and with a click, the door opens to reveal a cozy room with a large bed, plush armchair, and a window overlooking the city below. Dropping your coat and duffle bag on a nearby chair, you take in the room's atmosphere before sitting down on the edge of the bed.
The events of the evening whirl through your mind - Alastor's unexpected return, the allure of the Hazbin Hotel, and now being here in this room that feels both familiar and new. But for now, all you can think about is going to bed. You put on a pair of small black shorts and a large t-shirt. After you hit the lights and crawl under the covers, it doesn't take long for you to drift off to sleep.
While you sleep, a shadow appears in the room, a silhouette of a man with a sinister smile spreading across his face. The shadow moves closer to the bed, the figure illuminated by the dim moon light filtering in from the window. A shiver runs down your spine as you sense a presence in the room, causing you to slowly awaken from your slumber. Your eyes flutter open and the shadow flees, you only catch a glimpse of it out of the corner of your eye. You look around the room and you feel like someone is watching you, but there is no one here but you. You let out a sigh and try to go back to sleep, you must be seeing things.
As you try to shake off the eerie feeling, you hear a faint whisper in the darkness. Your heart races as you strain to make out the words being murmured. "Violet..." The voice is deep and sends a chill down your spine. You sit up in bed, your eyes wide with fear. "Who's there?" you manage to croak out, your voice barely above a whisper. There is no response, only the sound of your own ragged breathing filling the room. The voice sounded just like an old radio, you know he is calling you. But you’re not going to chase him, if he wants to talk to you, he knows exactly where to find you. So with that, you roll over and try your best to go back to sleep, despite the fact that you are being watched.

There's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it section of the Rebellion opening where bells flash across the screen and once I paused it, my brain screamed "Utena reference!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: The Rebellion Story (2013). Right: The Adolescence of Utena (1999).
Rebellion is to the original Madoka Magica TV series as Adolescence is to Revolutionary Girl Utena, to the point where I jokingly refer to it as "The Adolescence of Homura". The primary difference is that while Rebellion eventually makes it clear that it is a continuation, not a retelling of the original, the relationship between the Utena movie and its predecessor remains open to interpretation. (To make up for it, Adolescence has a gorgeously animated and romantic dance sequence and ends with the two female leads cuddling naked and kissing, while Rebellion... doesn't.) Most of the parallels are subtextual rather than overt, but every now and then the animators give us a shot that makes it clear that Utena was indeed a direct influence.
This whole section is difficult to see because it flashes by so fast, but it also includes another shot that takes my breath away:
Tumblr media
The windows of the castle in the fantasy theme park open up to reveal the clockwork powering it; the cogs and gears float in the celestial void, the "engine" of reality as we know it. The entire theme park is a Potemkin facade meant to disguise and distract us from the truth... essentially giving away one of the movie's main twists before it's even gotten started. This is also hinted at in earlier shots of the desert "blooming" as it is covered by an illusion, which is eventually rescinded in the final moments of the credits, but goes further by indirectly pointing to Homura as its source.
Tumblr media
This is also Homura's hand, but it's not as immediately obvious, just like the hands puppeting the Nightmares are also hers, but with a bandage to hide the soul gem mark on her fingernail. I don't know if we ever see that bracelet again, though.
Note that although opening windows are a major recurring visual motif in this movie--the symbol of the Law of Cycles' salvation--this is different, as evidenced by the stained glass design on the panes. Here we are "looking under the hood," so to speak, in a manner evocative of Princess Tutu, one of the other influences on Madoka Magica and Rebellion in particular, in which "reality" is ultimately revealed to be controlled by a narrative represented as mechanical clockwork. I can't help noticing the stained glass in the window is round with a purple cross--reminiscent of Homura's shield and her diamond-shaped soul gem.
Tumblr media
We also get a glimpse of the clock face, which is not the weirdest clock in this series by a wide margin, but does combine the shield/gears/time motifs nicely.
In case it's not clear, I love it when opening credits contained major spoilers hidden in plain sight and I cannot wait to see what they do with Walpurgis no Kaiten.

Mainly my strange idea of what the songs in the Hazbin Hotel series represent. I don't know how much of this can be called a theory, but there were a few things that caught my attention. Apart from the wonderful performance of the songs, I feel they are very important to the storyline itself.
There are also some thoughts on Charlie <3
Episode 1 "Overture" - do songs have power?
During the story at the beginning of the episode, specifically the bit about Lucifer, I got the impression that Charlie greatly admires his father for being a dreamer and imaginative. Probably because they both share these qualities. Charlie is also a dreamer as evidenced by the very idea of running a hotel for sinners.
The very portrayal of Lilith and the pointing out that she motivated the demons with her voice and songs, making them grow stronger. I think the songs play a bigger part in the storyline than you might initially recognise.
The songs in the series are sung consciously, everyone around is also aware that someone is singing a song. It is not portrayed as in other TV series or musicals that someone's song is natural to those around them and invisible as, for example, in High School Musical, where the characters sang and it was part of their world. In Hazbin Hotel, when the characters sing, everyone around them knows it and may wonder why someone is singing at that particular moment. The characters sing because it is important in some way - you can see this with Charlie. The song 'Happy Day in Hell' gives her strength when she has to go to meet the angels. She is motivated and full of energy. And before the song she was quite worried about the meeting or even nervous. The same is true in other episodes when the characters sing. The songs allow them to open up to others in some way ('Loser,Baby'), to reveal their fears ('Poison'), to seek motivation ('Happy Day in Hell' or 'Whatever it takes'), to show their strength ('Stayed Gone'). The songs carry a message and are not just embellishment or variety to the episode.
Lilith also sang, and Hell grew. That's my theory on the songs in the series.
Something that puzzles is Lilith's disappearance itself. What could have prompted the queen of Hell who made the place flourish to leave? To abandon her beloved daughter and the sinners she cared for? Something serious. Maybe Lilith herself wanted to stop the extermination somehow and that's why she disappeared to somehow solve it. Another theory is that maybe she disappeared for 7 years because she is trapped somewhere? Maybe the angels, knowing that it was thanks to Lilith that Hell was growing stronger decided to capture her?
We also clearly see Charlie's problems with the persia she has put on herself. It seems to me that in the story itself at the beginning she portrays herself as a saviour on whom there is great responsibility. She feels that she has to do something great to match her mother, particularly as she is not with her now. It seems to me that Charlie greatly admires both his parents and puts them on a pedestal by which he tries to meet the impossible - the salvation of sinners.
Charlie tries very hard to be good. She doesn't offend anyone and chooses her words to praise people, but also to point out faults. She's not naive, but maybe she's trying too hard to be good? Something to the effect that she tries to be as good as possible, but in a way it holds her back? Somewhat related to this pressure she puts on herself to match her parents because she admires them so much. It's as if Charlie thinks that being good to others and passing on that goodness will fix everything, but it's as if she doesn't take action to stop the evil. It's as if she thinks that any use of her position as princess of Hell or her powers involves doing something evil. This was the conclusion I came to in the episode 'Masquerade' when Charlie saw how Angel was treated by Valentino. It was a moment where I thought Charlie would snap and use her power to actually improve Angel's situation, e.g. freeing him from Valentino's hands by taking away his contract, or forcing Valentino to treat Angel better. After all, Charlie is Lucifer's daughter? She probably has the power to do it herself, but Angel's objections were enough to make her stop. I think this shows that Charlie is afraid to stand her ground and fight back when she sees opposition from those she cares about even if she sees them getting hurt. It's just my opinion, but Charlie kind of chickened out at that point. It makes me wonder what needs to happen for Charlie to finally have the courage to stand firmly on her own.

Mishapocalypse: what the-
Hey, former redditors! Welcome to the hellsite, we're all glad that you're here (especially you 196 folk you warm my dead, frozen heart). While on the whole you seem to be adapting AMAZINGLY fast to site culture, if any of you are confused over one of our founding myths this may help.
(or if you're a veteran tumblrina and just want to read an essay that's fine too)
(others key parts of our national identity to learn about if you're curious include Goncharov, I Love You, Color of the Sky, My Three Girlfriends, and many more)
also if you don't want to read my entire fucking essay take this and run
Tumblr media
but if you want to know the deal with this man, read on!
Mishorigins
Supernatural is a 2000s-ass TV series that ran on the CW from 2005 to 2020. It's about two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, who are "hunters" that protect people from various supernatural entities. The show was originally planned to last five seasons, with an angel character named Castiel (this is important) slated to be revealed as God in the finale. Castiel (nicknamed Cass by the CW and Cas by objectively correct people) was introduced in S4.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
left: Castiel, the gay angel of our collective dreams. right: Misha Collins.
The Man Behind the Mish
Misha Collins is a straight man who was forced by a cruel and uncaring god to play a heavily queer coded angel on a TV series intended for any demographic BUT gay teens (which is what it became). His performance as Castiel, and the large queer teen fanbase he drew, were a driving force behind a show would ultimately continue for three times longer its original plan.
I don't have anywhere else to put these facts so they go here
he was an intern in the Clinton administration during the Lewinsky scandal
he knows Tibetan throat singing
he was arrested for climbing onto a bank roof (he was trying to... read a book? 👀👀👀)
he probably made Jensen Ackles (the guy who played Dean less homophobic? Maybe?
he held a scavenger hunt called GISHWHES several times for his charity, Random Acts
cool guy
he later played Harvey Dent on Gotham Knights this very year (2023)
there's icebergs of this shit
he farted on an airplane once
Mishion: Impossible
April 1st, 2013 is a date that will live in mishinfamy. Tumblr a main hub of the SuperWhoLock fandom (a mega-fandom amalgamating Supernatural, Sherlock BBC, and Doctor Who), was the only place the Mishapocalypse could happen.
For boring deets I'll redirect you to the KnowYourMeme page but these images should sum it up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
left: a list of Tumblr users, circa 2013. right: a fine example of Misha culture
There are two takeaways here:
You cannot outrun Misha.
You will become him.
On April 1, 2013, a significant portion of Tumblr changed their avatar to the now-iconic Mishapocalypse photo and their handle to "Misha Collins", followed by similar waves of Mish across other social media sites.
Tumblr media
above: the modern Prometheus
This beautiful event was emblematic of pre-Dashcon Tumblr, an era as far away from us now as 1200 AD was from 1208 AD. You'll be pleased to know that the Mishapocalypse returns every April 1st to grace these ancient halls, a small group of pilgrims tracing new paths on the well-worn floor of the Church of Misha.
(this isn't to say the Supernatural fandom is dead, it's just somewhat diminished from it's glory days.
Thanks for reading! Reblog if you liked. I'll leave you with a bunch of Mishimages of my own that I posted for Mishapocalypse 23 (the 10th anniversary). Shameless self-promotion!!!

Happy Mishing!

"Have you never wanted to be free? To live? To do something other than consume and feed?"
"The stranger on the train does not want. It only feeds. It exists because its God exists."
"Gods are not permanent. Anyone can want."
"I am not anyone."
Or: The Stranger!Pete learns how to be someone.
a quick tma guide if u haven't listened to the podcast but still wanna read the fic is under the cut!
quick guide to relevant tma facts
the universe:
the magnus archives universe is the same as ours except fear entities exist in the world. they exist because fear exists and fear feeds them.
the fear entities:
there are 14 of them, feel free to read up on them here
the only relevant ones for this fic are
the stranger: the fear of the unknown, the uncanny, the unfamiliar, the creeping sense that something is not right
the desolation (also called the lightless flame): the fear of pain, loss, burning, and destruction, especially with a senseless cause
the eye (also called the beholding, the ceaseless watcher): the fear of being watched, exposed, followed, having secrets exposed // important context: in the fic pete references being looked at by the eye which is a reference to the main character of tma killing an avatar of the stranger by making the eye look at it – which kills them because the stranger is about anonymity etc
the buried: referenced in the fic by their alias "forever deep below creation"
the vast: referenced in the fic as "the awful deep"
fear avatars:
the fears cannot affect the world directly, so they have avatars to do it for them.
avatars are manifestations of the fears, kind of like servants, which spread terror and feed their fear entity. they also have special powers depending on their entity.
there are avatars who were previously humans who decided to worship a fear entity (or were simply chosen to). and there are avatars which were always avatars (which is what pete is in this fic).
agnes montague:
vegas is inspired by a character named agnes montague.
agnes was the messiah of the desolation – born by burning the mother. throughout her life she was subject of many odd stories and encounters; her special powers include just being really hot to the touch like if u touch her as a human that's a third degree burn.
agnes loved being human and living as a human; there is an arc in the podcast where she has a cute, short little romance with a human man by just sitting in a coffeeshop together (which the setting of the fic references) and then going on one date where at the end agnes kisses him (and yes she does burn him pretty badly) and then is led to her death by the followers of the desolation. rip agnes.
all the lore about turning human is made up by me <3 the podcast is a tragedy nobody's turning human and having a good time </3
anyway i think that's all u need to know!
if u are unsure abt anything feel free to send me an ask!

Of Crossbows and Lawyers
@jilymicrofics February Prompt List | No. 8: Uncertainty
Words: 1.6k
First time writing in English, so I really hope it's decent! Inspired by one of my favourite scenes of one of my favourite tv series, Fleabag 💕
Lily Evans never had problems with the law during the first twenty-eight years of her life.
On the contrary, everyone who knew her would describe her as the model citizen. No speed tickets, no minor thefts, not even a single fine for a book returned late to the local library.
Nothing.
Even her appearance was one of a sensible, intelligent young woman, polite and well-mannered, with that kind of innate beauty that made people in the streets turn around to look at her.
She was, in her words, completely and utterly ordinary.
So, it was with a little bit of a shock that she found herself – at the ripe age of twenty-eight and two days – walking down the corridor of a posh London law firm, in her best suit, desperately trying to keep up with the marching pace of her sister, and just a few moments away from meeting her brand-new solicitor for the first time.
It was even more shocking that Petunia, of all people, was the one helping her out of the legal mess she found herself in, but life had taken a very unexpected turn just a few days before, so Lily had wisely decided to accept any given hand and not to question her neurotic older sister.
Besides, it wasn’t as if Petunia had decided to help her out of pure goodness of heart, or in the name of sisterly affection. When she had found out that Lily had been arrested during a peaceful march for women’s rights, which had unfortunately turned into an out-of-control riot, she had been positively horrified.
«Just think of what this could mean for Vernon’s imminent promotion!» she had hissed on the phone when Lily had called her, as if her precious’ husband’s boss could care less about his sister-in-law’s misdeeds. «We have to clean up your reputation quickly, before anyone else comes to know about this. You need the best defence attorney we can get»
She hadn’t even wanted to listen to Lily’s explanation.
«I don’t care if you were wrongly mistaken for the person who actually broke that window with a homemade crossbow» she had said, almost growling. «I just want to fucking erase your criminal record and be done with this nonsense»
Petunia had probably cursed only three other times in her entire life. Lily had been so stunned that she forgot how to speak for a good twenty minutes.
Therefore, Lily found herself in a truly surreal situation, but maybe this time her sister’s love for order and propriety was going to be her salvation, instead of a constant pain in the ass.
As they were approaching the attorney’s office, Petunia started to rattle off a long and interminable list of dos and don’ts and basic rules of what she defined as “civil interaction”, adding here and there sparse information about the man who was going to represent her.
«He’s on top of his game» she said, stiffly, marching with unexpected sureness down the corridor. «Maybe a bit too young, but he managed to pull Dave Thomas out of a very, very tight corner last year»
«Wasn’t Dave Thomas the one who broke into his ex-wife’s house to steal her –»
«Yes, Lily, and we don’t talk about this in public, please. He was Vernon’s groomsman at our wedding» Petunia levelled her with an icy stare and then went on. «Now, I hear this lawyer has the best success rate of his firm and he agreed to take your case because he’s apparently a feminist» Her mouth twisted in a strange grimace as she said the word. «Or something like that»
«It appears he still has a little bit of integrity left after defending Dave Thomas» muttered Lily. «Good for him»
«I’ve already filled him with the basics» Petunia ploughed on, ignoring her comment. «Just be serious, will you?»
«I’ll do my best»
«And do whatever he says»
«What if he asks me to –»
«And don’t flirt with him»
Lily was so taken aback that she almost burst out laughing. She rearranged her face in the most disbelieving expression she could manage, as if she were extremely offended by Petunia’s admonition, and scoffed: «I’m not going to f –»
Then the door of the office in front of them opened abruptly and the most gorgeous man Lily had ever seen appeared behind it.
«– fucking hell, okay» she concluded in a whisper.
He was tall, dark, handsome in a very effortless way, with warm hazel eyes behind stylish glasses and a stupid, infectious grin dancing on perfect full lips. He was wearing what was with all probability a tailored black suit, for it seemed almost stitched on his lean and athletic body, and he carried himself with that type of self-confidence that could only belong to a person who didn’t know the feeling of uncertainty.
Lily had always thought lawyers were kind of sexy, but she had never seen such a fine specimen and for a moment she almost felt grateful for the absurd situation that had led her to meet him.
Then she remembered she was going to be taken to trial for vandalism and private property damage and her enthusiasm dimmed a little bit.
«Right on time!» he said, almost jovially, as if he hadn’t just flipped Lily’s world upside down. «Miss and Mrs Dursley, I assume?»
«Miss Evans» Petunia hastily corrected him. «She’s my sister. I’ve taken my husband’s last name»
The exquisite man in front of them smiled kindly – Lily noted that a dimple appeared on his left cheek when he did that – and then hold out his hand to her.
She shook it weakly.
«I’m James Potter» he said.
Even his name was attractive, for fuck’s sake.
«And I suppose you are the dangerous criminal who smashed open a shop window during a very illegal and reprehensible revolt against the status quo» he continued. «How disappointing of you»
Lily blinked.
«I’m joking!» he exclaimed, after a beat. Then he smiled, almost in a mischievous way. «My mother was at the march, too, you know?»
«What?!» Lily and Petunia gasped, the former with incredulous surprise, the latter with clear distaste.
«Oh, yes» he confirmed to both, proudly, before turning again his attention back to Lily. «But I dare say she was a little bit more fortunate than you, since she managed to hail a taxi and come home before everything went south»
«Lucky her» mumbled Lily.
«I must say, though, I’m very curious about the whole homemade crossbow affair» he went on. His eyes, which were sparkling with mirth, searched her in a way that made her feel strangely seen. «I know you don’t just judge a book from its cover, but you don’t seem the type to assemble Medieval weapons in her basement as a hobby»
«Usually I prefer something more traditional as reading a book on a park bench, but sometimes I like to change, you know, to liven up my life» Lily immediately said, forgetting everything about her predicament and her sister’s rules and not flirting with one’s lawyer.
«I think it’s a wonderful way to do so» James agreed. «Even if it occasionally lands you in the local prison»
«It was just a police station»
«My bad, miss Evans» he said, before smiling again. «Apologies»
«So» Petunia interjected, stiffly, before Lily could open her mouth, interrupting their conversation with the timing of a huge pimple on the day of an important date. «I see you hit it off wonderfully»
If James heard the razor-sharp quality of her voice, he didn’t seem to be put off by it.
«I think we’ll get along fine» he commented.
She really needed to stop thinking about him in very different and spicier scenarios.
«Yeah» she said weakly, trying to ignore the “don’t fuck your lawyer” look that Petunia was furiously sending her. As if she could afford to risk her dignity and pristine criminal record just for the thrill to sleep with her attorney. Even if he was something akin to a model. «You can go, Petunia. I’ll manage on my own from here»
Petunia scrunched her nose in a very irritated way, but didn’t dare to argue with her in front of a relative stranger. So, after giving her a stern and reproachful look, she hitched her bag to her shoulder and said a polite and detached goodbye to James.
«I’ll see you later» she said to her and, with a last warning stare, she went off in the opposite direction, disappearing down the long corridor and finally leaving them alone.
For a moment, they both remained silent.
Then James chuckled, almost to himself, and took a step back into his office.
«Shall we get started?» he said, beckoning her to follow him inside. «I’d hate for you to go to prison, miss Evans»
«I really hope you’re good at what you do, because I have no plans to do so in the immediate future» she replied, honestly, and then, feeling strangely bold now that her sister wasn’t there, she added: «You can call me Lily, by the way»
«I don’t think it’s proper for me to be on a first-name basis with my clients» James argued, but his voice was teasing. He sat behind a large mahogany desk that probably was worth a small fortune and invited her to take a seat in front of him. «But maybe I can make an exception for you. Lily»
Lily laughed and shook her head.
When she woke up that morning, she didn’t think that at the end of the day she would find herself in much more trouble than she already was, but it seemed like it was totally going in that direction.
And she certainly wasn’t going to complain about it.

Still Searching for Salvation (Don't Know Much Series)
Tumblr media
TRIGGER WARNINGS: Spoilers for The Last of Us TV Show. Dark subject, character death, grief, suicide, gunshot, mentions of blood.
Previous Part
“Joel,” Y/N cried as she held onto him. They had been sitting for an hour next to Sarah’s grave and Joel had yet to say a word. “Honey, talk to me.” She begged as she held his face in her hands.
His eye stared at her, but she could tell he wasn’t actually looking at her, he was staring through her. The pain and hurt in his eyes was so soul crushing it made her sob even harder.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” She cried as she crumpled into the dirt. She didn’t know how to help him. She didn’t know what she could say or how she could bring him any semblance of comfort. In her head all she could think about was how she wished it had been her that had died instead of Sarah. And she couldn’t help but wonder if Joel was thinking the same thing.
“Guys,” Tommy said from behind them his voice still raw with emotion. Every part of Tommy was as broken as Y/N, but he feel it was his job to stand guard, it was his job to be the strong one so that Joel and Y/N could grieve. It was also his job to keep Joel and Y/N alive. “We need to go, we have been here for too long.”
“No, Tommy we can’t leave her we…” Y/N sobbed as she reached over laying her hands on the freshly dug dirt. “I can’t leave her…”
In a swift motion Joel suddenly turned and grabbed Y/N’s shoulders so she was facing him. His eyes were still full of tears but they looked almost calm. Somehow this just made Y/N cry harder. “Joel I…” She started as he pulled her into his arms. That’s when she really lost it. “It should have been me Joel, I should have moved in front of you, I should have shielded her from the bullets. I’m so sorry.”
“Y/N,” Tommy gasped, but still Joel said nothing instead he just kissed the side of Y/N’s head and silently walked towards the car, leaving Y/N on the ground. “Joel I…” Tommy tried to say but Joel said nothing just grabbed his shoulder giving him a sad look as he continued to make his way back.
Tommy watched him walk for just a moment before he turned his attention back to Y/N.
“Y/N, you can’t have meant that, what happened to Sarah wasn’t your fault.” Tommy tried to sooth as he walked toward Y/N.
“How do we survive this Tommy.” She gasped. Not that she would say anything about this, especially now, but her ribs felt as though they were on fire. And the crying and wailing certainly weren’t helping. “I don’t know how to comfort him, and he’s… he’s so broken Tommy. Sarah was his everything. I just don’t know how we continue on after this.”
Tommy knelt down and grabbed her shoulder. “You have to be strong, you both have to be strong for each other. The world has gone to shit, but as long as you too have each other, there is something worth fighting for.”
Y/N wrapped her arms around Tommy holding onto him tightly. “I know you are hurting too Tommy. Thank you for watching out for me and Joel.”
He broke slightly and cried, not loudly and not for very long but silent tears for the lose of his niece.
When Y/N opened her eyes she felt as though the wind had been knocked out of her. As she stared over Tommy’s shoulder she could see the truck, but what she couldn’t see was Joel.
“Where did he go?”
“What?” Tommy asked as he whipped around. “Oh god,” Suddenly Tommy took off in a full sprint towards the truck.
“What is it? What’s wrong?” She followed after him.
Tommy looked into the passenger side of the car and Y/N watched in horror as he dropped the shot gun he was holding.
“Tommy, what.” She begged.
“We need to find Joel, we need to find him now.” Tommy snapped as he took off again this time towards the woods.
“Tommy please what is going on!”
“There was a gun in the glove compartment of that car and now it’s gone.”
Everything numbed and before she could even think about what she was doing, Y/N was suddenly screaming Joel’s name. Her vision had gone fuzzy and her head was spinning and she just kept screaming Joel’s name over and over again until she felt Tommy’s hand over her mouth.
“What the fuck are you doing?” He gasped.
“Tommy, we have to find him he is going to oh my god Tommy.” Y/N sobbed as she was about to scream out Joel’s name again Tommy threw his hand over her mouth.
“I know Y/N, I know. But you aren’t thinking rationally, you don’t know what might be out there right now, and screaming for Joel could bring those things right to us, or him. We are going to find him, just stick with me ok.”
Y/N just nodded as she gripped Tommy’s forearm tightly and ran with him. They had just cleared the treeline when a gunshot rang out, scaring all of the birds out of the trees. Y/N dropped her hand as her whole body went cold.
“No.” Tommy gasped as he took off running leaving Y/N behind.
Y/N collapsed to the ground as she grasped at her chest, she couldn’t breath, She opened her mouth to scream but no words come out. Instead she is silently sobbing, choking on her sobs. Her ribs burned but she didn’t care, all she could think about was Joel.
“Have I lost both of them?” She thought.
“Y/N!” She heard Tommy scream, but she couldn’t move she was frozen in place. “Y/N help me!”
Finally Y/N got the message from her brain to her limbs to move. “Tommy,” She whispered as she staggered her way through the forrest, trying to follow where she though his voice was coming from. “Tommy.”
“Over here,” He called again and Y/N turned to find a clearing with Tommy on the ground kneeling next to Joel who was unmoving with blood around his head.
“No, please no.” Y/N sobbed.
“He’s alive,” Tommy said as he struggled to lift. “The bullet grazed his head, we need to get him sewed up. He’s bleeding alot.”
Y/N gasped as she ran to Tommy quickly ripping a part of her shirt so she could hold it against Joel’s bleeding head.
“I need your help, I can’t carry him by myself, we need to get him back to the car.”
The two of them struggled to lift Joel off the ground, as Y/N still tried to apply pressure to stop the bleeding. It took them longer than they would have wanted before they finally reached the car and loaded Joel inside. Y/N sat in the back with Joel head in her lap. She felt nauseous as she could feel Joel’s blood sticking to her legs.
“We have to go back to the city,” She sobbed.
“Y/N we…”
“We don’t have a choice Tommy!” She screamed. “The military has to have set up some sort of camp, they will have a medic, they can help him.”
“Ok, ok.” Tommy said.
“Joel, baby, please wake up, I can’t lose you. I need you to be ok.” Y/N sobbed as she held onto Joel tightly.
****
The sound of Sarah’s scream echoes through his head as he woke with a start. His head was pounding, and the bright light of a flashlight in his eyes wasn’t helping.
“Joel.” A voice called, “Joel can you hear me.”
The ringing sound in his right ear made it sound as though the person was miles away.
“Baby,” Another voice called and Joel turned to look and saw Y/N sitting next to him, her face covered with dirt and blood and tears.
“Are you ok?” He grumbled his voice sounding foreign.
“Is she ok, Jesus fuck Joel.” Tommy responded as he ran his fingers through his hair.
“He should be fine, don’t let him rip his stitches open. Now get out of the tent.” A voice boomed.
“Oh my God Joel.” Y/N gasped as she wrapped her arms around him tightly.
Joel could see daylight streaming in through the tent and it took him a second to realize what had happened and where we were.
“You’re ok.” Y/N kept whispering over and over as she held onto Joel.
“Y/N we have to go.” Tommy insisted.
“We do not have to go anywhere, not until Joel feels ok enough to move.”
“Y/N I…” Joel started as he tried to move to stand up.
“That’s not really an option, you heard that asshole, we need to get out of the tent.”
“I don’t give a fuck what he said, Joel could have died Tommy, we can stay here a little while longer.”
“Goddamnit Y/N. If he comes back and we are still here, he won’t hesitate to through us into military prison or worse.” Tommy snapped.
“Guys it’s fine, I’m fine.” Joel finally said as he stood up, he swayed a little and Y/N reached out to steady him but he pushed past her and took off into the city. “Where is the truck?”
“Someone probably stole it by now.” Tommy huffed.
“Fuck,” Joel whispered under his breath. “And the guns?”
“Had to turn those into the military when we brought you in.”
“Why the hell did you come back!” Joel screamed and Y/N froze tears rolling down her cheeks again.
“Are you fucking kidding me Joel.” Tommy snapped. “Are you actually fucking kidding me.”
“We are probably stuck here now, you should have just kept moving, tried to find somewhere smaller without all these fucking people and the goddamn military.”
“No, you don’t get to sit here and lecture us, not after what we just went through. What you put us through!” Tommy balled up his hands into fists. “God if I wasn’t afraid it might kill you I would punch you right now.”
Joel didn’t say a word. He just stood there.
“Joel,” Y/N whimpered as she reached out for him but he quickly shrugged away from her grasp.
“We need to figure out how to get the fuck out of this city.” Joel groaned as he stormed away finding an empty tent and disappearing into.
“God I could just fuck! I don’t know how you can stand him Y/N.” Tommy snapped but Y/N could see the tears in his eyes starting to form.
“Tommy,” Y/N wiped her eyes quickly.
“How could he, I mean I know Sarah and…” Tommy said as he broke down completely.
“Oh Tommy,” Y/N pulled him into his arms.
“Thank God he missed,” Tommy sobbed. “I don’t know what I would do without him.”
“I know.” Y/N soothed as she held onto him trying to keep her own emotions in check.
They both stayed like this for a moment before Tommy backed away.
“I’m going to try to get some information, see what the military is wanting everyone to do, plus I’m going to try to get us some sort of weapon. Will you, can you try to talk to him?”
“Of course. And Tommy, stay safe.” She pleaded knowing that none of them could afford to lose anyone else.
Y/N sighed. She looked towards the tent where Joel had vanished into, her emotions felt like they were being pulled in a million different direction. But she had to stuff them all down, at least for a while. She needed to be strong for Joel.
“Knock knock,” She smiled as she walked into the tent. “Hey, um how’s your head?”
“Hurts like hell.” He snapped not turning to look at her
“Is there anything I can do, do you want want me to try to find something for you I…”
“Stop that.”
“Stop what Joel?” She said as she inched foward.
“Stop being nice to me. Yell at me, curse at me, just like Tommy did.”
“I’m not going to do that Joel.”
“Why!” He screamed as he stood up and charged at Y/N grabbing her by her shoulders. “You should be angry with me, you should hate me.”
“Joel,” She sighed as she reached up and carefully placed her hand on his cheek. “Baby I could never hate you.”
“But I tried to. I was trying to…” Tears were quickly filling Joel’s eyes.
“I know, I know baby. I understand.”
“What?”
“I understand, you couldn’t see the point anymore right? We lost Sarah.” She said her voice cracking.
The minute Y/N said Sarah’s name Joel broke down sobbing.
“Sarah,” He broke as he collapsed into Y/N’s embrace. “I’m sorry, I… I wasn’t thinking I just, I can’t believe she’s gone.”
Y/N held on tightly, her own tears spilling.
“I’m so sorry Joel,” She sobbed and as the two held each other, they knew that the life they once shared together had been destroyed, and there was no fixing it. But even in their grief, they held onto the idea that a new life, whatever that meant in the terrifying world they now found themselves in, could still be had, as long as they had each other.

Introducing the world of TTTE: Sudrian Boys [TTTE: Sudrian Boys AU Worldbuilding, Pt. 1]
Now that I've worked out exactly what I want from my AU, I believe it is finally time to share the lore with all of you (one month after I initially promised it OOPS).
The lore of this world is a bit HEFTY to explain, so I'm breaking it into multiple parts. This part mainly goes over the history and background for my Humanized!TTTE AU, TTTE: Sudrian Boys. In later parts, I plan to cover things like Sudrian vs Non-Sudrian Engine culture, how the engines differ from humans, and more info about how the shapeshifting works in my AU, so stay tuned!
Also! Information regarding specific characters will be included in separate character sheets I will be posting at a later date. I'm also currently working on some fanfics that I hope will expand my AU further. But feel free to ask me any questions you may have!
This is going to be a VERY long post so read on under the cut!
Before we begin, some key things to keep in mind:
I am still actively catching up with the canon source material at this point in time! Thus, aspects of my AU are subject to change as I read/watch more of the source material and incorporate it into my AU.
This AU is primarily based on TV series canon (both model and CGI), as that is what I am primarily familiar with. Some aspects are also taken from the Railway Series to help estimate an approximate timeline of events.
At this current point in time, BWBA is NOT canon in my AU. This is mainly because I have not watched it yet and have no plans to watch it later (with the exception of the Michael White episodes that everyone says are good). The episode "A Shed for Edward" from Season 21 is also NOT canon in my AU. This is to say that in my AU, Edward and Henry still live in Tidmouth. It's my AU. I do what I want.
On that note, Thomas and the Magic Railroad is partially canon in my AU. I haven't gone back to re-watch the movie yet (I do plan to at a later date), so I'm going purely off of memory and what I hear other people say about it. Because of this, I've decided to basically just take parts that I like and leave behind parts that I don't. In regards to the canonicity of the film itself, I consider it as a dream Thomas had (that may or may not have actually happend. It'll all make sense later).
With the exception of Philip the Diesel Boxcab, ALL of the engines are adults in my AU. Yes, that includes Thomas and Percy.
With that out of the way, let's start at The Beginning:
A long time ago, when humans were designing the first steam engines, a young faerie fell in love with them. Her true name is beyond mortal comprehension, but engines of today refer to her as Lady (or alternatively, the Lady of Legend).
Though fae are usually associated with nature, this faerie in particular was fascinated by machines and the ingenuity of mankind. And so she used her magic gold dust to breathe life into the machines that she loved so much.
And thus she became Lady, Goddess of Steam Engines.
For many years, engines and humans lived together in harmony. The engines found purpose in being useful, and humans were able to travel longer distances and distribute supplies amongst each other. It was a mutually beneficial relationship.
But then, everything changed when the fire nation attacked dieselization happened.
Lady watched in horror as humanity turned their backs on the steam engines that worked so hard for them. In increasingly larger numbers, engines were getting scrapped for as petty reasons as "not being useful enough". In an effort to protect her beloved machines, Lady imbued them with more powerful magic.
As much as Lady wanted to, the Fae Court wouldn't allow creations of man to be taken in mass to the fae realm. So if she couldn't offer her engines salvation, Lady would at least give them a means of escape.
By around 1960, as steam was getting phased out, Lady blessed her beloved machines with the ability to shapeshift. If an engine ever had a desire to leave the rails, all they had to do was imagine themselves doing so and they could walk the Earth in a human-like form. This would allow them live lives completely independent from mankind. Being "really useful" was no longer a requirement to have a right to live, now they could simply exist and pursue goals of their own choosing just as any human could.
For steam engines all around the world, shapeshifting became a secret and closely guarded practice that they would only discuss amongst each other. Humans were not to be made aware of this under any circumstances.
Unfortunately, even after Lady bestowed the gift of shapeshifting upon her engines, hundreds of them were still killed under the cutter's torch. Steam engines are proud entities after all, and many of them preferred to die upon their rails than to live in hiding as something foreign. And since shapeshifting was such a closely guarded practice, not every engine who may have wanted a way out was able to be taught.
Even so, there were still reports circulating of engines vanishing from scrapyards without a trace, almost as if by magic. These were the engines that managed to escape and are now living secretly amongst humans to this day.
Fast Forward many, many decades later. We return to the Island of Sodor:
It is now the late 2010s to mid 2020s. The entire Island of Sodor basically runs as a giant heritage railway.
The NWR is currently run by Sir Topham Hat III, who is at the strapping young age of 83. (I saw this tweet from someone who asked Christopher Awdry if STH III is still running the railway and he said yes so we're going with that.) STH III loves his engines very much, which is why he has no plans on retiring any time soon. Still, he has STH IV shadow him closely in order to prepare him to take over the railway some day.
Because of the success of both The Railway Series books and the Thomas and Friends TV show, tourists flock from all over the world to get a look at the famous engines. Plus, being one of the few places to still have steam engines in operation (and so many of them in fact), you can count on many of the tourists being train enthusiasts too.
Basically, the engines of Sodor are all treated like celebrities. They are FAMOUS and are generally adored by the public. Whenever they go anywhere, you can count on someone knowing their names.
And because of just how many tourists come to Sodor every year, the economy is thriving and the engines are all very, very busy. Everything is pretty idyllic.
But sometimes, prosperity can get pretty boring.
And now, our story begins:
As with many Sudrian Shenanigans, everything starts with Thomas the Tank Engine.
One night, after Thomas delivers passengers to a carnival, he makes a wish to leave life on the rails, even if only for just one night.
As much as Thomas loves working on his branch line, delivering goods and passengers from place to place, and meeting tourists, doing the same routine for literal DECADES can get a little dull.
While waiting for his driver and fireman to return from a short break, Thomas let his mind wander. He imagined himself as a human person taking part in the festivities with the passengers he just delivered. In doing so, Thomas accidentally activated the dormant shapeshifting magic Lady had blessed him with many years ago.
When Thomas opened his eyes, he was literally much closer to his rails than he had ever been. The station platform was much higher up. And Annie and Clarabel were much bigger than he remembered. Thomas had accidentally turned himself into a small human man, just like he had seen in his imagination.
He freaked out a little at first. When they returned, his driver and fireman didn't recognize him. It was only after Thomas started going off about things that only he would know, details about events that happened decades ago, before they were born and had only heard about in stories, that they realized that this small human figure really was Thomas the Tank Engine.
They called Sir Topham Hatt III at once, explaining the situation. And while baffling and unbelievable, the truth was right before their eyes. They were at a loss for what to do, especially since Thomas didn't know how to turn back yet. They concluded to allow Thomas to enjoy the festival for now, let Edward take the passengers home that night, and have Thomas stay with STH's family until he could figure out how to return to normal.
While scary at first, Thomas did enjoy the festival that night. And he went home with STH in Annie and Clarabel. He got to see the island from a new perspective, and he very much enjoyed that.
STH III made Thomas's driver and fireman promise to keep this a secret for now until they could figure out what happened. But that ultimately didn't matter because Thomas went to say "hello" to Edward that night. By the next sunrise, every engine on the island heard exactly what happened to Thomas. Some told their crew, but most weren't believed. Even some of the engines didn't believe each other. But at the very least, every engine on the island knew something strange was afoot.
The news eventually reached Donald and Douglas, who swiftly made their way to Tidmouth Sheds. Coincidentally, STH was bringing Human!Thomas to Tidmouth to inform the rest of the Steam Team about what had happened.
It is at this moment that Donald and Douglas reveal that they knew about shifting for decades. It was how they managed to get to the island under the guise that there would only be one of them. They would take turns, one traveling as an engine while the other hid in their cab. The reason they both appeared on the island as engines is because they hoped the controller would be kind enough to keep them both (and he was!). If it hadn't worked out, they would have run away together as humans. Since things worked out in their favor, they didn't see a point in shapeshifting again. But now that their secret was out, they needed to keep it safe.
Donald and Douglas taught the Steam Team how to shapeshift, and the engines continued to teach each other until basically every engine on the island knew how to switch between the two forms comfortably. In exchange, however, only a limited number of humans could know about engine shifting. These include STH III, STH IV, and the engines' drivers and firemen. Basically, only those who really needed to know.
Nowadays, STH gives the engines a little extra time off during the day to explore their new forms. The Steam Team also has an apartment where they can live together as humans if they choose. Within a few months, most of the engines have gotten in the habit of shifting back and forth, exploring their world and learning new things about themselves.
Now in a new perspective, the adventures continue. 😉

I had this draft for the 8 shows to get to know me meme that no one tagged me in, but then @batri-jopa tagged me for this other meme, so I'm doiing them as a mash-up.
10 comfort shows -
- that tell you more than you wanted to know about me. reasons below the cut, but the tl;dr is:
The Terror
Garrow's Law
Ripper Street
The X Files
Utopia
Interview with the Vampire
(BBC) Ghosts
Futurama
Avatar: the Last Airbender
Detectorists
Honourable mentions: Andor (will probably make the list once season 2 is out, but my trust of Disney Star Wars is *so* thin, I can't commit until then, no matter how excellent season 1 is); The Great (it's so good. The script is still one of the most astonishing works of art I have ever encountered. But comfort TV? hell no.); see also, Bojack Horseman (objectively great. Not comfort TV); Grease Monkeys (I've got to get hold of season 2, but I'm really fond of its coarseness, wish-fulfilment and sureallism).
Tagging 10 people if they wanna join in, but others feel free to say I tagged you! @stripedroseandsketchpads, @notfromcold, @notabuddhist, @donnaimmaculata, @erinaceina, @boogerwookiesugarcookie, @elwenyere, @kheldara, @bellaroles, @jimtheviking
List 10 comfort shows and then tag 10 people
The Terror: Like Ripper Street below, I feel this show deep in my bones and think I must be actually insane when I try to explain to people what I like about it (watching it literally made my husband's depression worse so I'm not allowed to talk about it. Jk. Sort of. About the last bit anyway). The sheer ridiculousness of that era of exploration has been a firm fave for years and I love how the show weaves horror and hubris together, how it's not a straightforward 'natives get vengeance on colonisers' story, but the colonisers ruin it for everyone, poison life for Silna, too (all without any threat of sexual violence towards her CAN YOU BELIEVE IT). I love all the attempts to impose 'civilisation' on the life the men try to live as they come to realise how doomed they are, how key the trappings of their life become - objects as tethers and talismans. I love how utterly futile it all is. How much they all care, and the audience cares despite that. Self-destruction and salvation all jumbled up together. Two full crews go into the ice and die. The end. They do everything they can not to die and it happens anyway, it's the ultimate 'the love was there and it didn't change anything'. And no one learns anything. Perfect TV.
Garrow's Law: Sometimes I do want my historical drama to be wish fulfillment actually, and this is the actual og fave. No, most of the cases weren't actually Garrow's, yes, it's a fluffy liberal take on things that played out in a more complex way, but the cast is so good, and Garrow is such a likeable guy, but then you see his flaws emerge in such a gentle way through the four series, and it really does case-of-the-week with characterisation so well, and it's got that amazing British TV character actor cast where there's always someone in the background you know, and the building romance between Garrow and Sarah, and the real repercussions of it for her are handled so sensitively, augh the culmination of the series with their own personal legal cases is so good.
Ripper Street: in my head this show was so much more than the sum of its parts. Season 1 was on the surface a fun BBC historical romp. Season 2 I had to watch through gritted teeth because Susan's situation quicked me out too much, among other reasons. Season 3 leaned into the more sinister side of the protagonist and came through as something weirder and darker, a vein which ran through Seasons 4 and 5, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I live for my alternative reading of the migration stories and nightmarish flipsides of people that we get running through the background of seasons [3/]4/5, but uh. the show's tumblr fandom is not a place for me. Reid is actually monstrous, and I like him despite/because of that. Oh man, I have so many feelings about this show, and I'd love to do a rewatch and blog about all my crazy theories but I'd probably have to go into witness protection afterwards. But rest assured, it isn't a show about the Ripper, and it's all the better for that. It does class and trauma so well, it also captures all the optimistic curiosity and the utter hypocrisy and hubris of the Victorian era so well.
The X Files: I mean, it's a formative influence, innit. Seasons 1 and 3 are the best, a lot of the 'classic' favourites are episodes I actually really disliked, even though the early seasons are the best a lot of my favourite episodes are from later...the beauty of TXF is that there's so much of it you can hold contradictory opinions about what makes it good, though, and my theory is that it's at its best when it's early and still being allowed to take its course, where even the mytharc hasn't tied itself in knots yet so every episode is of a higher standard, and then later, when the actors have wrested control of their characters from CC enough to play them like they want, but the good episodes are really just MotW ones because the mytharc has vanished up it's own fundament and I've lost track of whose turn it is to have a near-death season arc. Not technically the TV series, but still, Fight the Future is just so much of its time, watching it is like having a warm bubble bath in childhood nostalgia. Even the later series have things to recommend them - I always enjoy Doggett much more than I'm expecting to, and it's about bloody time Scully got a decent female friend in the form of Reyes...I haven't watched seasons 10 onwards though, I don't feel I'm missing much. Five fave episodes: 1.13 Beyond the Sea, 3.4 Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, 5.4 Detour, 7.17 all things, 6.19 The Unnatural.
Utopia: Tragically incomplete at 2 seasons, but what a pair of seasons they are. Brutal and uncompromising, horrible and compelling, but also frequently hilarious and full of the warmest, most fascinating characters who are all on a journey to Getting Much Worse. It's not something I've been able to watch since the pandemic *weak laugh* but I know when I do go back to it it will remain painfully prescient and uncomfortable. The longing for a 'balancing' and a righting of a historic wrong that drives it, and the desperate failures between people who are really just searching for love and don't know how to give/receive it...ugh so good.
Interview with the Vampire: Just rewatched season 1 and I'm just. No notes, five stars. The way Louis think he's a narrator in control, the way Daniel knows such a thing isn't possible, the way Louis does let himself get drawn on things, the way Armand sees the danger in this but it's not in his control any longer. Memory is a monster. The Odyssey of recollection. Fucking won my heart with those lines alone.
(BBC) Ghosts: Ok, I will say that I think the last season was actually a bit weak. They were in a hurry to finish, and they got away with wringing the feels from the important bits (The Captain's death was perfect and I will say this over and over again), but it felt like it was in a rush to come up with scenarios that would force admissions like The Captain's, whereas the show is at its best meandering around in a buffonish way that suddenly results in a Big Oof moment. Robin's arc in season 4 was a great example of this, as was Mary's. But basically it's still simply perfect comfort TV: silly but not malicious, unfair but kind to its characters. I'm going to miss them all so much, but I'm also going to rewatch so much.
Futurama: bit basic maybe, but I have watched it so often and I can watch any episode (ok, except for Jurassic Bark) again and again and again. I don't think I've binged any TV show so often with so many different people. Not sure how I feel about the immanent revival, but this has always been my favourite Matt Groening product, so fingers crossed.
Avatar: the Last Airbender: without getting into like...fandom discourse, man, this is a really perfect show. No need to say 'ooh it gets good after--!', it's just good from the beginning. A really well fleshed-out world, great characters who grow through the series, enough self awareness that the 'clip-show' episode Ember Island Players actually builds on the characterisation and addresses ambiguities in its own plots. A show that sticks to its principles and doesn't fudge the ending and also consistently looks gorgeous.
Detectorists: I had to put it on because no other show has literally made me fall off my chair laughing. Are the main characters useless? Yes. Is it often perplexing that the women in their lives spend any time with them? Yes. But that's forgiveable, because it's ultimately so kind to its beleagured characters and things work out despite their stupid decisions. Also it just captures rural English eccentricity so well. They're all such freaks (affectionate).

George Villiers 1st Duke of Buckingham in Fiction - a partial summary
CW: discussions of biphobia and homophobia in historical fiction and current historiography.
Feeling both inspired and outraged in equal measure by the upcoming Mary&George series, and having been fascinated with this remarkable man since forever, I have decided to post this partial overview of portrayals of George in fiction. The ones in bold are the ones I have read. Feel free to add to the list.
The Three Musketeers, Alexandre Dumas
The Honey and The Sting, Elizabeth Freemantle
My Queen My Love, E.M Vidal
Cavalier Queen, Fiona Mountain
The Dangerous Kingdom Of Love, Neil Blackmore
The Fallen Angel, Tracy Borman
Wife Of Great Buckingham, Hilda Lewis
Darling Of Kings, P J Womack
The Queens Dwarf, Ella March Chase
The Smallest Man, Frances Owen
The Spanish Match, Brennan Purcell
Captain Alatriste, Arturo Pérez-Reverte
The Cardinal and The Queen, Evelyn Anthony
Earthly Joys, Philippa Gregory
Myself My Enemy, Jean Plaidy
Charles The King, Evelyn Anthony
The Young And Lonely King, Jane Lane
The Fortunes Of Nigel, Walter Scott
The Crowned Lovers, E Barrington
The Minion, Raphael Sabiniti
The Murder In The Tower, Jean Plaidy
A Net For Small Fishes, Lucy Jago
The Arm and the Darkness, Taylor Caldwell
Les Gloires et les perils (?), Robert Merle
And a few I’m not so sure about where George is mentioned in passing: .
Viper Wine, Hermionie Eyre
John Saturnalls Feast, Lawrence Norfolk
Rebels and traitors, Lindsay Davis
The Assassin, Ronald Blythe
Some observations, in no particular order:
Novels set mostly in James reign often have George as a rival to Robert Carr and will attempt to foreshadow how much worse he will be compared to Carr.
The ones that feature Henrietta Maria as Protagonist or at least POV character, where George is normally a baddie trying to sabotage HM and Charles I's relationship, and his death is often portrayed as some sort of salvation for HM. In these books George will often be lamed for things which were IRL Charles's fault such as the expulsion of HMs French household in 1626.
Three Musketeers is practically a category in its own right due to all the film/tv adaptions but has had relatively few clones or imitators in English which is something of a surprise
George is only a protagonist in one of these books (Darling of Kings, P J Womack) in the rest he's a cameo or a villain
Rumours that I suspect authors know is nonsense are repeated verbatim such as Tracy Borman's baseless speculation about G offing the Manners brothers, king James, and his rumoured involvement with the occult.
Georges relationships with James and Charles respectively are mentioned but not meaningfully explored. neither are any other personal relationships he had.
The insights and shifts in terms of post 1970s revisionist and post revisionist scholarship esp. Roger Lockyer's bio of George have not found their way into any fiction set in this era. Georges capability as an administrator and manager of patronage is more often than not totally absent.
the general view of George and why he's often shown in such a negative light is pretty much "well, he was willing to god knows what with that dirty old man James; who knows what other depravities he was capable of" and its female authors who really seem to lean into this, which I find fascinating and disturbing.
EDIT (can’t believe I forgot this) George’s murder in 1628 is always the result of some sort of aristocratic conspiracy rather than the act of terrorism it was IRL. I do get why authors do this - the amount of world building and foreshadowing needed to make it seem plausible rather than random in universe. However making it the result of personal grudge rather than ideological violence detracts from why it was so shocking and important.

I want to shed some light (heh) on the use of streetlight imagery in Rebellion, because it's another recurring visual theme (albeit more subtle than some of the others), starting with Homura's transformation sequence:
Tumblr media
It's difficult to convey in a still, and I have no idea if it is intentional, but the angle and the framing always gives me war flashbacks to that one iconic sequence in Revolutionary Girl Utena:
Tumblr media
(if you know, you know)
Although the background in the first photo is too blurry to make out, it looks like the lights of Mitakihara City in the background, as if we are viewing this from the park where Madoka and Homura have their heart-to-hearts. However, the lamp designs here are different, specifically lacking the old-fashioned wrought-iron filigree:
Tumblr media
(oh my god, I just noticed the labyrinth in the middle right, this whole garden is just one elaborate metaphor, isn't it, AAAAAAAAAAAA)
Here's a closer look at them--interestingly, they don't seem to have changed much as a result of Homura's takeover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We get a better look at the other lamps later on, illuminating a staircase as Homura monologues about witches. The symbolism here is obvious: Homura is descending into her psyche and these lamps are guiding the way.
Tumblr media
Gosh, that wrought-iron filigree sure looks like a stylized salamander, doesn't it?
The old-fashioned look is well in keeping with Homulilly's general Victorian aesthetic, as well as Homura's apartment building from the TV series, which has an old-world European look to it in contrast to the shiny modernism of the rest of the city's architecture.
Tumblr media
However, when Homura emerges back onto the city streets, the filigree has disappeared. This implies to me that it represents a part of her nature she is not yet consciously aware of, consistent with the other subtle uses of salamander imagery in the first half of the film.
Tumblr media
Here, the lights are old-fashioned, but not to the same extent. They fit right in with the dream-like blending of inside and outside in this scene (which Homura does not even appear to notice).
We see the wrought-iron lamps again in the other descent into Homura's psyche in what I call the "Tunnel of Love" sequence. Not only do we get the lamps again, we also get the windows representing salvation/connection to the Law of Cycles/Madoka, scissors, and keys in sealed glass jars.
Tumblr media
(As an aside, the blob in the middle sure looks a lot like the famous rabbit-duck illusion, which is an optical illusion famously used as an example of different modes of seeing --"seeing that" vs "seeing as"-- by the German philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, which is well in keeping with Rebellion's use of psychological imagery and German philosophy.)
As the original series takes pains to remind us, Homura's name is a homonym for "flame", so it makes sense to me that she would unconsciously gravitate towards flame imagery. These old-fashioned lamps are a more benign, focused version of the apocalyptic conflagration that destroys the city later on.
Tumblr media
Note how the streetlights now resemble sewing pins--the primary weapon of the Clara Dolls.
Streetlight imagery also appears in the original TV series, although the focus is less on the lamps themselves and more on all the insects attracted to it (an obvious metaphor for magical girls):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's fascinating how the same object can represent completely different things depending on context even within the same series.
