Until this last trip to Africa I didn't realize the cheetah populations were dwindling so fast. It is increasingly hard for a cheetah cub to be raised to adulthood. The biggest reasons are habitat loss, human-wildlife conflicts and poaching. When we were there, cheetahs that had new cubs had a ranger who followed them and did their best to protect the cubs from other predators and to keep an eye on them. I thought this was pretty cool. We even saw one ranger run off a baboon that was heading in this family's direction. I thought it was important to bring awareness to the cheetah's vulnerable status.

El 4 de diciembre se celebra el Día Internacional del Guepardo, el animal terrestre más rápido del mundo, que ahora está librando una carrera contra su propia extinción. Quedan menos de 7.100 guepardos en la naturaleza, lo que convierte al guepardo en el felino más amenazado de África.

¿Por qué se celebra el Día del Guepardo?
El Día del Guepardo fue proclamado por la Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), y más concretamente por su fundadora, la Dra. Laurie Marker que designó esta celebración en homenaje a Khayam, un guepardo que ella misma crió desde cachorro en el en Wildlife Safari en Winston, Oregon.
Este guepardo sirvió como experimento para saber si a los guepardos criados en cautividad se les podía reintroducir en la naturaleza conservando su instinto cazador. El resultado fue positivo, pero la doctora fue testigo de cómo los granjeros africanos terminaban con los guepardos porque los veían como una amenaza.
Ella se trasladó a Namibia para trabajar por la causa y en 1990 fundó CCF y declaró el 4 de diciembre el Día internacional del Guepardo, coincidiendo con el cumpleaños de Khayam.
Curiosidades sobre los guepardos
El guepardo puede llegar a correr hasta 110 km. por hora. Y lo más extraordinario es que pueden alcanzar su velocidad máxima en solo 3 segundos.
La zancada del guepardo cuando corre es de 6 o 7 metros.
El pelo del guepardo está moteado con manchas negras, pero también su piel. Si le diéramos un buen corte de pelo, también veríamos las manchas.
El guepardo usa su cola como un timón de un barco, para dirigir la dirección de su carrera y para mantener el equilibrio cuando corren muy rápido.
Las marcas de lágrimas que el guepardo tiene en su cara les ayudan para cazar para que el sol no les ciegue, y también le sirven como mira para apuntar a su presa.
Las mamás guepardo tienen muchas crías, entre 2 y 8, aunque muchas de ellas no sobreviven al primer año porque son el objetivo de otros depredadores.
¿Qué puedes hacer para ayudar al guepardo?
Lo más importante es que aprendas sobre el guepardo, pero también puedes:
Visitar lugares donde haya guepardos en cautividad para aprender sobre ellos.
Comprar una camiseta de Save The Cheetah de la campaña de recaudación de fondos de CCF.

Was going to post a special dedication a few days ago, but life stuff was "faster" and it gave me a mental burnout. :'> Finishing this makes me wanna do more~ Getting out of comfort zone is super hard but worth it.

November 2018 - The Cheetah Mara Project
Last year in Kenya I had the privilege of watching two cheetahs hunt. It was exceptional. We followed the pair walking through the plains of the Mara searching for prey. After a couple of hours the duo came across a pack of zebras. It could have been seriously exciting. However instead, the cheetahs quickly changed their minds and suddenly scarpered off into the wild. We were told that they probably sensed something more dangerous hunting them. Even though we didn’t manage to see the cheetahs go in for the kill, it was pretty incredible following these two cats for so long.
Whilst following the duo, we learnt a lot about cheetahs and how they are seriously in danger and listed as ‘critically endangered’ on the IUCN Red List. Rhimani’s November 2018 ‘Chosen Charity’ is the Mara Cheetah Project, set up by the Kenya Wildlife Trust in June 2013. The global cheetah population is quickly “declining with less than 7000 individuals left in the wild”. The Mara Cheetah Project focuses on the population of cheetahs specifically found in the Mara ecosystem. The project uses “research-driven conservation approach through a combination of long-term population monitoring, ecological research and community-based conservation” to help save the Mara cheetahs!
If you have made a Rhimani purchase this month your donation has gone towards one of their current projects, such as ‘Cheetah monitoring’ and ‘Cheetah Identification’. Each cheetah has their own individual coat pattern. The Mara Cheetah Project examines pictures of cheetahs and compares the different coat patterns to monitor the “number of cheetahs in the Mara, population demographic, cub survivorship and ranging behaviour.” The project gives you the opportunity to ‘report a cheetah’ yourself. They have a section on the website where you can tell them about a cheetah spotting, a little something to support and help them monitor the cats.
