I enjoyed watching the Game and the Ark together because they stand in contrast to each other as the best and worst of Sheppard and McKay.

In the Game we see McKay's arrogance and Sheppard's aggression unmitigated by any of their other virtues spread through a whole culture. Both of them are plagued with stubbornness and unwillingness to see the other side of the picture. Sheppard and McKay have to work overtime to try and keep their worst sides from hurting each other. I think this is a major part of their friendship.

McKay has almost no friends because he's so hard to work with. It's shown in such a hysterical way when Nola refuses to believe that Baden's citrus fruit is anything but an insult.

Sheppard too struggles in the friend department because he's aggressive and doesn't follow the rules. Baden actually cheats at the game and orders the attack on Nola and her people. This shows Sheppard as a man who, mostly before the responsibilities of Atlantis settle on his shoulders, might have just been a bit too quick to pick a fight.

Oddly, McKay finds a friend in Sheppard, and Sheppard a friend in McKay. They are proof that Nola and Baden aren't one dimensional, and can not only get along but thrive together.

(Also, I will always love Sheppard beating McKay at chess at the end and I will always love LORNE! and Radak playing the game.)

The Ark stands in total contrast to the Game. It is Sheppard and McKay's qualities dialed up. It is Sheppard talking McKay down from panic, calming Ronon with a promised fight to the death, knowing Atlantis (LORNE!) will come for them, fighting to save his team, and then willingly sacrificing himself for Teyla. The look on his face when he's breaking through the door is gold. He is a determined man ready to kill if you touch his people, which you did, so prepare to die.

The episode ends with Sheppard reiterating yet again that he would willingly give his life for any of them, even McKay.

Rodney is also at his best. Excited to explore, quick on his feet, comes up with solutions, listens to Sheppard, tries to save everyone, and tries to talk Sheppard out of risking his life. I love the moment he tells Lorne he's not going back to the Jumper because they don't leave their people behind, and Lorne gently agrees and explains that he's not leaving anyone behind.

Rodney may be quick to panic and quick to tell you how you're going to die, but he too will do anything for his team.

Watching these two episodes back to back is great because of the contrast they provide. Sheppard and McKay at their worst and then Sheppard and McKay as they are, which are two men who have worked against their worst traits for the sake of others.

...and next is Sunday. Big, sad sigh.

Mercy is a John and Todd fic, set after Atlantis lands on Earth.

Todd is beginning to starve and he requests mercy from Sheppard. It examines their relationship as frenemies and looks at how they respect and think about each other. Despite my publishing order, it is actually the first SGA fic I wrote, I just haven't finished the editing.

Here's an excerpt from the draft:

Sheppard sat on the floor of his room, his head bowed, as he ran his fingers over the smooth contours of the general’s non existent gift. His mind was a million stars and three years away. He shivered on the cold floor of Kolya’s cell and every part of him hurt. He ached as if he’d run a triathlon and then gone a few rounds with Ronon and Teyla. Kolya had a wraith. And they were going to feed him to it, in excruciatingly slow increments. He thought he had seen some terrible things in Afghanistan, but Kolya was bringing things to a new low. He knew the man hated him and held him responsible for his loss of face with the rest of the genii. Where the hell had they gotten a wraith? Even with Atlantis’s level of technology capturing a wraith was difficult. And where were they keeping the damn thing? He suspected the answer almost as soon as the question popped into his head. ‘I made the mistake of being captured alive,’ the prisoner in the other cell had rasped. The one who hadn’t shown his face. Had his voice sounded raspy enough to be a wraith? He heard the rattle of chains on the other side of the wall. He had been fairly out of it when they had put him back in the cell, had they opened the other cell door as well? He supposed it didn’t matter if his cellmate was also the instrument of his torture. When it came down to it the choice was Kolya’s. “I heard them call you Sheppard,” his cellmate startled him, speaking from a place much closer than the last time. Well, that clinched it. They hadn’t said his name here. What could it possibly gain from talking to him? He might as well play dumb, as strategies went it often served him well. It led to his enemies often underestimating him. Now that he knew, he began to think Kolya had underestimated him again. Keeping his back to the wall he told the wraith what it already knew. “Do you blame the wraith,” it asked him. The question threw him. Why should it care? “No,” he told it slowly. “It’s just doing what wraith do.” He said the words because he could get information from the wraith, but as he said them he recognized the truth of them. How long had it been held captive down here? Getting fed only when Kolya needed to hurt someone, and God knew what else Kolya had done to it. Aside from isolating it. He drew in a breath as he got it. They were telepathic, and it was alone. It wanted him to figure it out. It wanted to be known, even if for only for the few hours he would live. It was used to being surrounded by hundreds of minds, and all it had were scraps of contact here and there. This was definitely something he could use. He pushed himself up to his feet and peered into its cell through the tiny opening. He would give it what it wanted.

Ooooooh thank you this is a favourite of mine! I decided I really wanted Sheppard and Rodney to do the 36 questions to fall in love but like we know how hard it is for Sheppard to talk about his feelings so I kind of had to get their jumper jammed in an unstable sinkhole, sorry boys. features of this one include Sheppard being gay and pining quite pathetically (affectionate), Rodney being clueless as always, and background lesbian scientists who are stranded separately on the planet's surface and very excited about the local flora.

snippet from this, formatted insanely because I often write dialogue first and I haven't filled the rest in, but I love this part so it's the one I'm including. It's quite deep into the list and into being stuck in a fucking hole so our boys have loosened up a little by this point

It's like you said, I don't tend to let a lot of people in, I… admire that you can be entirely yourself, let everyone see you. R: Oh. Well, thank you. I suppose that leads into another of yours then, I can trust you to say what you mean, when it counts. A lot of people use double-speak and backhanded compliments, and I don't always pick up on it. I can always trust that if it's important though, you'll tell me straight, eventually. You'll joke and you're a sarcastic ass but you won't outright lie and you won't let me go on believing something you've said is true if it wasn't.
