Does anyone else have a sneaking suspicion that Peach is some undercover spy for Bowser? Is it just me reading into things too much?

I Simp for peach and bowser XD now I’m wondering how would it go if their were Yandere rivals who trying to win the reader hand in married 🤣 would their still be rivals or work together and come a poly 😝
I am such a Bowser fan so sure, lol. I need to give Peach some attention on here anyways. This is general but leans more game-based.
Yandere! Peach vs Bowser
Pairing: Romantic - Rivalry
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Manipulation, Kidnapping, Mentions of marriage, Forced marriage, Rivalry, Jealousy, Obsession, Forced relationship implied, Violence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is actually a pretty neat pairing.
You most likely knew Peach first and you're a "human" (?) like her.
You are close friends with the princess and her valiant heroes, Mario and Luigi.
Her obsession would be more likely to spark first as she doesn't need to kidnap you to fall for you.
You just visit her castle for chat and she can't help but fall for your voice.
Peach often plans to bake you cakes and you two are usually seen alone.
You just like to think you're best friends with the princess, completely unaware of her dark intentions when she looks at you.
You're so innocent... you don't have a clue she intends to marry you in the future.
Peach would be Manipulative, Caring, Obsessive, Delusional, Patient, Protective, yet Temperamental at times.
This is different than Bowser, who's Possessive, Impatient, Protective, Caring, Persistent, and Intimidating.
Although the two DO share the Protective and Caring trait despite their differences.
Due to them sharing this trait, when the rivalry eventually starts, they theoretically could share.
That's challenged by Bowser's impatient and possessive trait, however.
How this may start is with Peach, as said before.
The princess had fallen for you when she first met you.
You had helped the Mushroom Kingdom a few times before from other threats such as Bowser.
You didn't often fight but you did hand the two plumber brothers info you could snag.
Since then you often visited Peach, either invited or checking in to make sure she's safe.
Peach finds your care for her flattering.
You don't just care for her as a princess... you care for her as a close friend and ally.
The princess often tries to make herself look her best around you and always asks what your favorite treats are.
If you don't like cake she tries to practice making other things.
Peach is a yandere who thrives on physical contact.
Expect to be bombarded with hugs and friendly kisses on the cheek or forehead as greeting.
It's her form of getting the hint across.
Peach often bribes you to stay in her castle, using the excuse of you making her feel safe.
Peach would he manipulative due to the power she has in her kingdom.
If she did ask for your hand in marriage, there's a lot of pressure on you.
For the most part Peach is subtle with her manipulation.
She wants to make you fall for her without forcing a betrothal first.
Peach is incredibly caring to your needs.
She has wealth and a spacious castle... completely surrounded by mushroom servants loyal to her orders.
Don't you feel at home here?
She can get you whatever you wish... all the gifts and affection you could ever want....
She's patient yet delusional.
If you turned her down when she asks for your hand, she excuses it as you being shy or nervous.
It's fine if you're not ready yet...
She can wait until you are!
Although... constant/frequent rejection can make her irritated.
She may hit a breaking point if you keep ignoring her.
Lastly, Peach is protective.
For good reason, too, as soon she'll realize she's not the only one in danger...
Turns out, Bowser doesn't want Peach as his little special one now.
Which should be a relief to the princess, right?
Wrong.
That's because she learns you're his new target.
Bowser's obsession probably starts more after he kidnaps you.
Maybe he met you when you were helping Mario and Luigi one time and couldn't stop thinking about you?
The Koopa King is lonely... normally he kidnaps Peach to help with that.
But maybe his attempts with you will be different?
This could go two different ways.
Bowser kidnaps just you...or he kidnaps Peach and you by accident, which sparks his obsession.
If he kidnaps just you, it becomes very similar to the Bowser concept here.
He intends to have you help with his children and keep him company.
He is awfully impatient with waiting for you to love him.
Once he's attached he dreads the idea of letting you go or giving you up.
He's also protective, especially when Mario and Luigi show up to take you back.
Despite his intimidating strength, height, and persistent behavior... he's caring.
He truly just wants affection, and unlike Peach, you may just give it to him.
He had no idea the reason Peach didn't reciprocate was because she liked you.
Bowser isn't mad at you for stealing Peach's attention... he understands, honestly.
But now he's mad at the princess, causing the rivalry.
If you were the only one kidnapped, Peach will help Mario and Luigi to save you.
Peach's determination surprised the brothers when she asked to help get you back.
They probably don't know how obsessive she is with you.
Peach is determined to drag you back from that overgrown lizard no matter what happens.
Meanwhile, Bowser is determined to defend you and your "relationship" with his life.
He's already planned a wedding outfit for the both of you and gave flowers!
Then there's if he accidentally kidnaps you both.
This way keeping you is unintentional, but Peach desperately pleads with Bowser not to hurt you.
So he relents and allows your presence.
This is another way he can become obsessed.
Originally he thinks Peach is the one for him.
He pours all of his affection and attention into Peach, said princess ignoring it in favor of pouring hers into you.
At first, Bowser doesn't notice the attraction Peach has for you.
That is until he falls for you and notices how Peach acts around you.
How could he be so blind?
Peach loves you... but you don't love her like that...
Which means he must have a chance!
Expect fighting when they both find out they have a crush on you.
It's mostly verbal but they certainly don't get along.
Peach screams that he'll hurt you by accident!
Bowser growls that she's been so rude to him, she has Mario and Luigi, why does she need to have you?
They both want to marry you, a choice that intimidates you.
Peach promises you'll be her adored royal consort in the Mushroom Kingdom!
Everyone will love you.
Bowser claims, with a bit of an ego, that you'll be the fearsome consort of his Koopa Kingdom!
Everyone will fear you and him!
Peach wants to dress you in white with fire flowers for your wedding...
Bowser wants you in white too, but with pirahna plants for your wedding...
They fight and fight.
When Mario and Luigi eventually show up for the rescue of you and the princess, they're met with the two arguing over you.
They're confused but try to rescue you both anyways.
Even if they shared they'd still have fights over wedding plans and lack of attention.
The two royals would probably war with each other over something as simple as who you like more.
Truth is, after what you've seen, you're scared of both.
It's best you move away or hide someplace, honestly.
If you run from them who knows when they'll stop chasing you.
This rivalry could tear kingdoms apart... it's best you try to stay out of it in the end.
"Love, why do you look so scared? Bowser's the bad guy here... I'm just trying to make you happy!"
"Dear, don't look so sad... our kingdom will be the best in the land with you on my side!"

maid's worst nightmare - ch 28
Tumblr media
"i'll just start the chapter today at work just to have a little something done" i said. anyway here's the wholeass chapter
previous chapters
@sovereign-of-succ
There wasn't much news about the Mushroom Kingdom, as it turned out. There was one article about how Bowser attacked and destroyed the castle - again - and how, again, there were no fatalities. You sighed heavily as you scrolled through it, scanning for any indication of how long it might take to get the castle rebuilt. Most of the article focused on how the attack seemed more vicious than usual, given the scale of the destruction, and finally at the very end of it there was one sentence that suggested it might take a few weeks.
That struck you as a rather quick time frame to rebuild a whole castle but maybe the toads were just that good? Who knew. It also struck you that you didn't seem to be missing - the article had claimed everyone was accounted for.
As you sat there frowning at the screen, some of the articles off to the side refreshed. You'd done a good job at ignoring them until your eyes were inevitably drawn by the movement. To your surprise, there seemed to be a follow up article posted just yesterday.
MISSING: PRINCESS PEACH'S NEW HIRE
Your heart leapt in your chest; that had to be you. As far as you knew, you were the most recently hired maid, and the only one missing. Peach had realized you were gone! Surely she was itching to try and find you! Too bad you didn't have a way to contact her to let her know where you were.
As quickly as you could, you opened the article to practically speed read it. Your breath caught in your lungs at a certain part.
In an unprecedented turn of events, one of Princess Peach's handmaidens has come up missing after the attack on the castle. The handmaid, who Princess Peach asked us to keep anonymous for privacy reasons, was hired only a few months ago when she moved to the Mushroom Kingdom. Without a body, rumors are flying, but the most prevalent one is that for the first time in his life, King Bowser has kidnapped someone other than the princess to hold hostage. Others speculate she just up and left, but the princess is adamant that this woman wouldn't do such a thing. Currently, Princess Peach is trying to get in contact with King Bowser to confirm if he knows anything or not. She expects to hear from Prince Peasley of the Beanbean Kingdom tomorrow when they return from a trip to King Bowser's castle.
Holy shit, this was definitely about you. She knew, and she was trying to get you back, but it seemed like she didn't have a direct way to contact Bowser or else surely the process would have been sped up. Maybe you'd be back with her before the week was out… or at least there might be plans to be back with her then.
The sting of imminent tears pricked at the corners of your eyes and you quickly found yourself fanning your face with a hand in hopes too keep the tears from falling; if you cried, you'd end up ruining the makeup Wendy did for you. It was hard, though; after Bowser suggesting she wouldn't care, or couldn't justify bringing up home, it was a massive relief to know that she had noticed your absence and was going to do her best to find you.
You hoped she didn't think you were secretly dead somewhere. That would suck pretty badly.
At the very least, the article mentioned your body was missing so it seemed like she was holding out hope that you were, indeed, just stolen.
You couldn't wait to go home.
After a few minutes of fanning yourself to keep your tears in your eyes, you successfully didn't cry. Now Wendy wouldn't throw a fit if she happened to see you again before the day was out - and honestly, you were counting that as a big win. But now that you had the news, you knew you still had a bit of time, so what better way to spend it than doing a little research into the princess you served? Just to see what others thought about her.
The first link you ended up clicking on was just a glowing review of her: aptly named with a bubbly personality that would rival the sun itself, a woman who'd never abandon those in her care and despite being stolen time and again, always went back home and immediately dealt with issues that had arisen in the time she was gone. She was a fierce competitor when it came to games, a reputable kicker of ass, but she was never unsportsmanlike. It even seemed like in times of need, she would help other kingdoms that reached out to her - whether or not they were allies.
Although it was reassuring to read such a wonderful thing about her, you were careful not to let yourself get swept away in the excitement. You recognized the author as a toad that often wrote articles in the newspaper and figured he might be just a little biased.
The next article you looked into seemed less positive. You didn't recognize the author, but according to them, the personality that Peach presented was just a cover for how she was behind closed doors. The article alleged that she would abandon people when they traveled, and coerced her subjects into pretending they loved her. The author seemed to think that Peach was the sort to throw people under the bus if it meant she stayed out of trouble. Needless to say, you weren't totally convinced.
The third article you delved into seemed to be a solid in between of the other two: this one made some valid points that Peach genuinely tried to do her best for her people, but as a monarch she was sometimes put in tough spots and had to make decisions that others didn't agree with. You were much more willing to believe that, if you were honest, and after finding out that she had realized your absence, you didn't think you'd blame her if she couldn't negotiate a fair trade for you.
You were just a handmaiden, after all. Perhaps appreciated by her, but definitely not someone important.
You sighed and rolled your shoulders as you sat up a little; during your readings, you'd started to hunch over, which was a bad habit you weren't totally sure how to fix. But whatever! The important thing was that overall, it seemed like opinions of Princess Peach were positive and that you had actually made a good choice when you applied for your position. That genuinely helped ease most of your lingering anxieties and you knew that even if it took another week for negotiations to finish, you'd be able to wait more patiently.
Just as you stood up to wrap up your little research session, you heard the door open behind you.
"See? I told you she was here," came Morton’s voice. "Okay, have fun!" And the door slammed before you had a chance to turn around to see him.
When you did turn, your blood froze in your veins as you were greeted to the sight of Rodney stalking his way toward you, a forced smile on his face while his hands balled into fists. He had an infinitely more threatening aura than you'd expected, his eyes boring holes right through you as you stood frozen at the desk. You knew he'd be unhappy with you when you ran but you had no idea it would feel borderline murderous.
Fuck, this was serious. Morton didn't know Rodney was supposed to stay away from you and as far as you knew, no one else knew you were here or with him.
Rodney could legitimately kill you. He looked like he was about to. You knew instinctively that you wouldn't be getting out of this without some injuries.
"Been looking for you, cutie," he growled. "Why don't we have a chat, just the two of us, huh?"

Okay so I had a thought about the Stormshipping/Mario crossover now that I started trying to write this thing for real
Back to the bit I mentioned before a while back about Chazz and Peach gaslighting Bowser into believing the Toads' misunderstanding that Chazz is an actual prince. I originally thought Chazz would be the one doing it, now I think it would be best if it was Peach initiating that interaction.
___
Imagine it: Chazz and Peach are brought up from the dungeon and are brought before Bowser so y'know, he can gloat about his big plans for defeating Mario and taking over the Mushroom Kingdom and antagonize them as is on brand for the guy. During this, Chazz, being his typical self, is being a fucking smart ass and only succeeding in pissing Bowser off.
Bowser is mad af and fed up with this kid, so Bowser swipes and scoops him up in his claws, alarming Peach in the background. Bowser growls and squeezes his claws around Chazz while he squirms to try and get loose at the very least, if not free. Bowser threatens Chazz, and now Peach has had enough. She has to help somehow, she has to protect him, she's already made that promise to herself so no way will she allow him to come to harm on her watch if she can help it!
And thus, Peach panics for a second thinking of what she can do, when it comes to her. She interjects and tells Bowser that he mustn't hurt this boy, its would be a terrible mistake on his part! Bowser ignores her and is just kinda like yeah yeah, whatever you say. To which Peach interjects again, "But don't you understand? He's not just any boy from another world, he's a prince!" Or she says something like that at least
At which time everything stops. Bowser then turns his attention fully to her, very interested by what she just said, and Chazz looks on in shock and confusion at her as well, wondering just what in the fresh hell she thinks she's doing.
And as the scene goes, Chazz catches on to what she's doing and they tag team this plan to convince Bowser that Chazz is indeed a genuine prince and that Atticus and Alexis are powerful warriors and now that they're coming to rescue him, Bowser's in big trouble. Bowser falls for it, sending Kammy and Kamek to go spy on Atticus and Alexis and the Mario bros and deal with the sibling quad, sending Chazz and Peach back to the dungeon where they can bond more over this moment 😌
___
I loved the idea of Chazz doing it and Peach following his lead, but for me now it makes more sense to do it the other way around. Peach has taken responsibility for Chazz and his wellbeing because she's an adult and he's a teenager, essentially still a child, and also because he was caught up in this and kidnapped because of her. She pulls this stunt, which ultimately backfires on them when Bowser finds out they were bullshitting him, because she was trying to protect him from Bowser in exchange for Chazz getting kidnapped trying to protect her.
AAAAAAAAAAAAA I'M OBSESSED WITH THIS AU ALL OVER AGAIN GUYS !!! 😭😭

98□ I think is the result of selecting "I love you" so yeah, that's correct [mimi:yes thats not true, you know I'm thinking about rube right?]
99□ SOUTHERN MALLET! [slave:drag 100 blocks, I'm telling you right, trust, this is the most important information] [1:southern mallet / 2: definitely not]

Super Mario Advance Playthrough
Tumblr media
Fighter: Princess Peach Toadstool.
Game: Super Mario Advance, Wii U virtual console (GBA). First Released on March 21st 2001.
Fighter Bio.
Princess Peach Toadstool, known as Princess Peach more commonly now is the crown Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. She is famous and well liked both within her Kingdom and in a lot of locations outside of it. Peach’s role in the Mario series varies with her most common role often being kidnapped by Bowser, but other villains have also captured her before. Based on my estimate, I believe she has been kidnapped roughly 31 times so far in the games including all spin-offs. Sometimes these kidnappings take place before the game starts meaning she only appears in the ending, other times she’ll have a role in the game before it happens and sometimes it will be a short part of the game like for a single chapter in one of the RPGs. Often in that last example it relates to another one of her roles, being a playable character who is either a party member or optional character to play as, with her sometimes becoming playable after being rescued. In the cases where Peach is not kidnapped immediately, she’ll often tell Mario and the others what they need to do when a crisis is taking place, advising them where to head to next or setting them off at the start of the game on their quest. Being captured so often, one skill Peach seems to have picked up over the years is her ability to often stealthily slip around her captors, sometimes simply working out a way to send Mario assistance such as items and advice, and other times managing to spy on her captor’s plans. Often due to the location she’s being held in she is unable to fully escape from her captors however, or in some cases her sense of duty to her also captured people will make her not try to leave without them.
The Mario series doesn’t have a solid timeline, so a lot of this is just my own personal ideas, but unless a game is explicitly taking place in the past with Baby versions of the characters, I tend to just go by the order in which the games are released regarding character’s histories in the franchise, something possibly evidenced by a scene in Super Mario Sunshine where F.L.U.D.D. searches its databank and has data on Mario’s adventures prior to that game as past events. I also personally like to consider the Paper Mario series broadly canon to the Mario series as a whole so I will be including aspects from that here. Peach first met the Mario Bros and Bowser back when they were babies, with her first meeting with them being during the events of Yoshi’s Island DS. In this game Peach was one of the babies who the Yoshis are trying to help get home, with her ability when riding a Yoshi being to use her parasol which allows them to ride on high winds. The next appearance of Baby Princess Peach was during the Shroob invasion where her older self went back in time and was kidnapped by the Shroobs. Baby Bowser planned to kidnap Baby Peach, however he was interrupted first by the Baby Mario Bros and then by the invading Shroobs. Baby Princess Peach actually manages to not be kidnapped throughout the game instead remaining in the future Castle with a young Toadsworth who is her caretaker. Following these two events (excluding spinoffs with Baby Peach where she appears but there’s no story such as Mario Kart) the Mario Bros seemingly left the Mushroom Kingdom possibly for New Donk City. Despite their absence, Bowser didn’t attempt any more kidnapping plots for some time, possibly not until the Mario Bros returned to the Mushroom Kingdom following the events of Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros seems to be the first time Bowser successfully kidnapped Princess Peach taking over her Kingdom entirely until the Mario Bros managed to defeat him and save her. In the backstory to this game, Bowser apparently used magic to transform the people of the Mushroom Kingdom into various objects and then kidnapped the Princess to stop her from turning them back. It’s due to this as well as Peach’s abilities in some games that it seems she is capable of certain forms of magic, often of the healing variety. It is only rarely however Peach is shown to use these abilities.
When it comes to her personality, Peach was probably the earliest character in the series to have dialogue, with her having lines in the very first game and most others after, whereas other characters like Bowser would more often only have dialogue in the instruction book at most. In the very first game it was fairly basic with her simply thanking Mario or Luigi for saving her and offering them the chance to take on a new quest, which was a harder version of the game. Super Mario Bros 3 however had her show a bit more personality, with her making a joke to her saviour at the end of the adventure based on the infamous line Toad would tell the player in the original game, “Thank you Mario but our Princess is in another castle.” Before telling them she was just kidding. Peach’s personality varies a little from game to game, but usually the main aspects of it are that she’s kind, generous and when not captured is good at advising the others what needs to be done. Despite being fairly reliable, she can sometimes be somewhat whimsical, especially in spin-off games with her often enjoying frolicking and singing, and she can when pushed show a fairly strong angry side, with her either aggressively convincing a character such as Luigi to go and save his brother or reacting angrily to those who mock her. Finally, despite her longstanding friendship with Mario, she’s willing to tell him off if he’s getting too carried away, almost abandoning him and Bowser at one point when they start squabbling and she just wants to go home.
Friends: Princess Peach is fairly popular throughout the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond and as such a lot of characters know of her even if they haven’t met her before. Peach’s subjects seem to all adore her a lot with them often being depressed when she’s absent. Of her closer relationships, her closest arguably is with Mario, with him often rescuing her and sometimes her returning the favour. Their relationship tends to be teased sometimes as possibly romantic, but there are times Peach will find Mario a bit too overbearing. What is clear is that they trust each other entirely and when possible will often work together. Peach is close with Luigi also although not to the same degree as Mario, however she will still in some games treat Luigi the same way she does Mario in the ending when Luigi is the character being played as, such as giving him a kiss on the cheek. Later games have shown she extends this to anyone who helps her as a sign of gratitude, including Yoshi, Toad and Toadette. The next closest relationship Peach has is with Toadsworth her elderly steward who has taken care of her since she was a baby. Toadsworth often worries for the Princess’s safety and tries to accompany her whenever he can. Toad is Peach’s attendant and often fulfils Toadsworth’s role in his absence sticking by her side when possible. Toad is fiercely loyal to Peach despite his cowardice and will often try to help her out however he can.
Toadette is someone Peach gets along with, however the two don’t interact that often with Toadette often doing other roles to help Mario. Peach has a connection to the Yoshis due to them saving her with the other Star Children when she was a baby, however besides this there is only one instance of her ever riding Yoshi, which is in the ending of Super Mario World where she rides Yoshi on the journey back to his house after Bowser is defeated. Of the rest of the cast Peach seems to get along fairly well with most of them, with possibly her best friend being Princess Daisy who she often partners with in various sports and other games and the two will also act as friendly rivals when in competition with each other.
Enemies/Rivals: The relationship between Bowser and Peach seems to have developed over the years. Initially Bowser seemed to aim to capture Peach simply because she was the princess of the Kingdom he was invading and then because she could undo the magic he used to transform her citizens. Eventually however, Bowser seemed to develop an affinity for Peach, one which she does not reciprocate at all. Due to this, Bowser’s aim is always to kidnap Peach and try to convince her to marry him rather than just destroy her as with his other enemies. Bowser also at one point told his son Bowser Jr that Peach was his Mother, which led to her being shocked when Bowser Jr claimed this. Despite Junior revealing later on he knew Peach wasn’t his real Mother, he still referred to her as Mama and seems to like the idea of it, kidnapping Peach sometimes so she can be with Bowser. Although Peach does not get along with Bowser or his troops, she will work with them when needed, and in cases where Bowser helps against another enemy she is willing to do things such as send him a cake as thanks. Beyond this, Peach has had a few other enemies, often them being villains who kidnap her as part of their plan such as Sir Grodus or Cackletta. Peach has fought against a couple of villains herself including Count Bleck’s minions, Smithy’s Gang and Wart, leader of the 8 bits who invaded Subcon.
Crossovers with other Smash characters: Being from the Mario series, Princess Peach has had a fair few crossovers, although not as many as the Mario Bros themselves. Super Mario RPG had Peach playable as part of the party, and therefore she was also present when Samus made a cameo in the game. Link’s cameo in the game appears before Princess Peach joins the party, however they are still technically in the same game so I feel it’s still worth mentioning. Princess Peach similarly to Mario appears in the crowd for both the Megaton Punch minigame and Kirby’s Battle in the Boxing arena with King Dedede in Kirby Super Star and the remake Super Star Ultra. Princess Peach is a racer in Mario Kart 8, where there was a Mii costume for Captain Falcon, along with the Blue Falcon as a kart and two F-Zero tracks. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, there is also Link in both his Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild incarnations as well as both default Inklings, two human Animal Crossing Villagers and Isabelle who are playable. Princess Peach is a character in the Game & Watch Gallery games and as such has crossed over with Mr. Game & Watch. In the NES version of Tetris, Pit appeared playing a harp alongside characters such as Princess Peach, Samus, Link and Donkey Kong.  Princess Peach is a character in the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series therefore crossing over with Sonic. Pac-Man has crossed over with Princess Peach in the arcade Mario Kart GP series. Whilst Princess Peach has never directly crossed over with any of the Hero characters from Dragon Quest, many of the Fortune Street games have featured crossovers with the Dragon Quest and Mario series, with many other Dragon Quest characters interacting with her. Finally, and perhaps most notably is a game where Princess Peach has a direct cameo and Mario doesn’t. (There is however a character based on him) In all versions of Link’s Awakening a character named Catherine sends a photo of ‘herself’ to Mr. Write (a character who is a clear reference to Dr. Wright from the SNES SimCity game who is also an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros) with him showing Link the photo which is a picture of Princess Peach. In reality, Catherine is a goat living in Animal Village. Whilst normally I tend to not include pictures or outfits in other games as cameos (Peach’s dress and parasol appear in many other series such as Animal Crossing for example) I felt in this case it was justified as the photo is part of the actual sidequest regarding the character’s identity rather than just being a background cameo.

Why this game?
Princess Peach has been playable in a few games so I had quite a few to choose from, Super Mario 3D World was one contender with Peach playing somewhat similarly to how she does in Super Smash Bros, however she lacked something specific in this game that I went for with my final choice. The other two notable options, Super Paper Mario and Super Princess Peach which was her starring role both had her play in a somewhat more unique way to how she did in Super Smash Bros, with Perry the Parasol being a big part of her moveset in SPP, whilst in SPM Peach only had her Parasol lacking her floating jump. Super Mario Bros 2 was the first time Princess Peach was playable, and most of her moveset in Super Smash Bros originates from the game, with not only her being able to float for a short time when she jumps, but perhaps the most unique aspect from the game being her ability to pull out turnips to throw as weapons, something she only does in SMB2. It was for these reasons I decided to go with Super Mario Bros 2 in this case, especially as those other games will still be covered later down the line on my list. When it comes to the version of the game I chose, I went for the Super Mario Advance incarnation rather than the original NES or Allstars version, however I will detail that more in the next section overall.

My past with this game.
So this game is one of the select few specifically from my childhood. I had Super Mario Allstars on the SNES with this game on it, but also I had the NES version as well. With the NES version the main thing I remember is just having the box with the picture of Mario on the front. Similarly to other games then I never completed this one, however it was probably the Mario game I got the least far playing. I believe I would only ever get to 1-3 before usually not making it past the Phantos to face Mouser. For some time I mostly remembered the game but didn’t really revisit it, it wasn’t exactly in the same class as Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World even if I did have some fond memories of it for being so different. Probably the most confusing thing with the game for me back then was related to the cartoon show. In the cartoon show, Bowser is depicted looking different to the games, with him being mostly green with a crown on his head as opposed to his look in the vast majority of other appearances with orange scales on his body and only his head green as well as lacking a crown. Wart, the antagonist of Super Mario Bros 2 however, was all green with a crown on his head. Due to this, I believed that the King Koopa on the cartoon show was actually Wart (which might not be that outlandish as the first version of the cartoon show was based on Super Mario Bros 2, so it was likely King Koopa was just an amalgamation of Bowser and Wart, although this is DIC so the possibility of them just screwing it up is always the most likely scenario) Another perhaps somewhat unique source of this was my Grandma when I’d visit her as a kid, who would have various games I could play with my Cousins, and one she had was a card game called Super Mario Bros Blockbusting Card Game. Of course, being a big fan of Mario then I would love getting this out, especially as the big cards had artwork of the various enemies, powerups and the Mario Bros. What was interesting was this also had artwork of Wart as well as Bowser, which therefore for me back then looked even more similar, so I just assumed Wart was the King Koopa from the cartoons and Bowser was from the games. What helped with this was there were a fair few of the bosses from Super Mario Bros 2 who were cards in the set.
It was only with magazines I believe that I gradually learnt that Wart was the antagonist of Super Mario Bros 2, and at first I believed this meant he was the villain from the cartoon show till I finally realised the cartoon show wasn’t really relevant to the games at all and King Koopa was meant to be Bowser. I also at this time learnt probably the other most notable aspect of this game, that it wasn’t the original Super Mario Bros 2. Despite having Super Mario Allstars, back then I didn’t exactly look at the Lost Levels as anything else other than a weird version of Super Mario Bros I couldn’t get anywhere on, and it was only later I learnt that that was the game in Japan that was SMB2 and the SMB2 I knew had been another game altogether, Doki Doki Panic. What’s interesting is I believe apparently Miyamoto was more involved in Doki Doki Panic than SMB2 (Lost Levels) overall, so it’s not as if the game becoming a Mario one was completely out of nowhere. It’s also very interesting that so many factors of this game, things like Peach’s movement, Luigi’s distinct character design, Toad being playable and perhaps the biggest one being various enemies such as Bob-ombs and Shy Guys became a huge part of the Super Mario Bros series, with Bob-ombs appearing in the following game SMB3 (Which meant in Japan these enemies somehow went from being in Doki Doki Panic to Super Mario Bros 3.) The reason for this apparently was that they believed the original SMB2 (Lost Levels) was too difficult really to sell outside of Japan, something that tends to be mocked now, but personally I think it makes for a more interesting and unique sequel so I’m kind of glad it happened. It’s also interesting to me that due to this, outside of Japan Super Mario Bros fits a slight pattern I noticed with a couple of franchises on NES, where the second game in the series would be quite different to the first, then the third would end up being more like the first game again but expanded. The Legend of Zelda had Zelda II Adventure of Link which had sidescrolling as a major gameplay element before A Link to the Past brought the series back to how it was in the original game, Castlevania 2 Simon’s Quest was a lot different to the first game, but Castlevania 3 Dracula’s Curse brought it back to the gameplay of the first game, and with SMB2 it was radically different to SMB, but then SMB3 brought it back to the style of the first game.
Another big part of my history with the game, as with a fair few franchises, goes back to my experiences on the early internet, specifically Newgrounds flash animations again. Back then, there was a flash animation at the time called Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom which I really enjoyed. It was bloody and involved Mario dying and Luigi setting out for revenge, fairly tame compared to a lot of stuff on Newgrounds then and with some really nice usage of sprites. It was the second flash movie in this series however that involved Mario setting off to face the real villain behind the events of the first movie (which turned out to have been a dream) Wart that really made me appreciate SMB2 more. At the time I was really getting into messing around with sprites and Games Factory, trying to make my own games, so this flash movie made me look a lot more into SMB2 and all the unique enemies in it, with the various bosses such as Mouser, Tryclyde and of course Birdo and Wart being characters I wanted to see more of. This all led me to finally properly play SMB2 and beat it some time after I had beaten SMB3.
For my final history with the game, it relates mostly to Super Mario Advance, the remake of Super Mario Bros 2 that launched the Game Boy Advance. It was traditional at that point to launch a new Nintendo console with a Mario game, a pattern that would be broken only a few months later with the release of the Gamecube (which instead had Luigi’s Mansion, and the Wii wouldn’t have a Mario series game at all at launch.) This game was the first in the Super Mario Advance series and it’s arguably the version that was changed the most from the original game, with a few changes to the levels such as new giant Shy Guys and a fair bit more voice acting with all the bosses getting lines they’d say when you met them. This is pure speculation I’ve had since then, but I feel like they possibly picked Super Mario Bros 2 as they felt it was the game that they could risk changing most, and also that they changed it the most of the series so as to show off what the GBA was capable of with the voices and sprites. I remember when the GBA was the current console, Super Mario Advance was the game I’d tend to see most often being shown off in stores, even sometime after other games had come out. Despite this, it was probably the last game in the Advance series I got, but I’d say out of the Mario Advance series it’s the game I’d most recommend instead of or alongside the original or Allstars version as it’s the more unique experience. It’s due to this that I chose Super Mario Advance as the version for my playthrough rather than the others.

My Smash Playthrough.
I have actually played through this game fairly recently from start to finish, for a character much further down my list so the game is somewhat fresh in my memory compared to other games I’ve written about so far here. For this playthrough as it was the game I chose for Princess Peach I played through the whole game solely as her. In comparison I’d say she’s one of the characters who I prefer playing as due mostly to her extremely useful floating ability, with her downside (being her power which means she’s unable to pull vegetables or pick up enemies as quickly and a slower running speed) not really feeling too much of a hassle in exchange. I want to focus on Peach mostly, but Mario as always is the all-rounder having no real weaknesses nor gimmicks that make him excel in any area, Luigi has the best jump but is a little slower and less powerful than Mario (this is also the game where he first had his scuttle jump) and finally Toad (the character I played through the game as recently) is the fastest and most powerful but has the lowest jump, often requiring you to charge up a super jump (done by crouching down until the character starts glowing) to reach higher platforms. The plot of the game is that Mario had a dream one night where he went up a staircase and found a mysterious door. Opening the door he saw a vast world before him and heard a voice telling him this land was Subcon and that the evil Wart is causing suffering there. The voice tells Mario that only he can save the land and to remember Wart hates vegetables before Mario wakes up. The next day, Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach go for a picnic, Mario tells them of the dream he had and they all say they had the same dream. During their picnic they see a cave and look inside it, finding a staircase leading up to the same door from the dream. When they open it, they are once again standing before Subcon, with them this time entering which is where the game starts.
Probably the most immediate point for most Mario players to notice when first playing this game is how it is very different when it comes to a lot of the standard Mario mechanics, granted when the game came out this was following only the original Super Mario Bros, so it wasn’t quite as unusual. Some aspects remain the same, such as the characters turning small when they have only one hit left, however unlike in other Mario games their health is restored by finding hearts, with any amount of hearts over one bringing them back to regular size. Mushrooms are in the game still, but this time finding one and picking it up gives the character an extra heart (as well as fully healing them) which means they’re a lot less common than in other Mario games. This game also lacks any sort of power-ups such as the Fire Flower, with the only alternate form being brief invincibility when touching a Star. I quite enjoy the main mechanic used to fight in this game, being picking up objects or enemies and throwing them at other enemies to defeat them, it provides a fun and fairly unique style of gameplay to the other games in the series and creates fairly basic puzzles in some cases where you’re required to build a small tower of mushroom blocks as an example to be able to reach a high platform. Possibly one of the most infamous aspects of this game are the keys that are sometimes required in stages to get through a locked door. You are required to carry the keys similarly to other objects to the door, however when holding the key, the evil Phanto Masks will relentlessly pursue you, and only stop either when you use the key on the door or drop the key. Despite their reputation and giving me some trouble as a kid, nowadays I barely find them a problem as just throwing the key ahead of you usually gets them off your back long enough to travel a fair distance before they pursue you again.
When it comes to difficulties I faced playing the game, it’s a fairly easy game, with only two sections I remember really causing me many problems both recently and back during this playthrough. The first is a stage where you’re travelling across the tops of whales in the ocean. The top of them is a fairly big platform, although the middle of the platform will sometimes have water spout out of their blowhole. Touching this water from the side will hurt you which can be somewhat annoying, however jumping on top of the water that’s spurting out provides a platform. Perhaps the most irritating part to me is when you’re required to use the whales tails as platforms, mostly as they are very small and it can be very easy to slip off of them, leading to an instant death. The second and probably most irritating situation in the game for me are parts featuring you digging through sand. In these parts of the level there are layers of sand that you can dig by pulling them similarly to how you pull vegetables out of the ground. The problem with these parts are the Shy Guys who constantly walk from left to right, and will fall down the layers of Sand you’ve removed. Due to how little room you have to manoeuvre when you get lower in the sand, picking the Shy Guys up and throwing them doesn’t really work, often with them catching on a layer above and instantly walking back into you taking off health. The way I describe this sounds like it’s a design issue but it’s more just hard to describe and really makes sense when playing, it’s not unfair or anything, it’s just these sections are the ones I tend to die most at and find the most tedious, possibly simply due to impatience when it comes down to it.
The stages aren’t really ground-breaking, but when compared to the stages in the original Super Mario Bros I feel they have a fair bit more variety. The themes for them are grassland, vertical waterfall stages, desert stages, underground caves and snow stages, with some of them simply being at night. I still find the stages do some interesting things however with them not seeming just like variations of each other but often having a few unique features to them that makes them stand out, for example the very first stage is a fairly basic grassland, but the end of it has you going into a cave to reach the top of some hills, then climbing into the clouds before facing the boss. The levels are longer than those in the original Super Mario Bros, however there are less of them, with each world only having 3 stages, and the last world, World 7 only having two. The game is somewhat challenging, it was probably the one I got the least far in of the Super Mario Bros games as a kid, but despite a couple of issues I find it fairly simple to play through now, especially with Peach.
The Bosses are probably the more interesting of the first three Super Mario Bros games with there being quite a few variations, although some are repeated a few times. This game was the debut of Birdo who appears in a few variations. The most basic battle with Pink Birdo has her shoot eggs from her mouth at you, which you have to grab from the air and throw back at her. Red Birdo shoots eggs also, but varies it with some fireballs, so you have to be careful which projectile you jump onto and which you just avoid. Green Birdo is the final variation shooting only fireballs, requiring you to grab other objects from around the room to throw instead of eggs to beat her. There is a fourth sort of variation exclusive to Super Mario Advance, being the Robo Birdo. This boss fires eggs also like Birdo, however the eggs are giant and it also has a charging attack which requires you to grab one of the chains hanging from the ceiling to avoid. Birdos are usually the bosses of the regular stages in Super Mario Bros 2, with the third stage of each world having a unique boss to fight, Robo Birdo being one of these unique bosses who replaces a repeated boss in the original versions of the game. There are a couple of unique appearances of Birdo in the game however which I find neat personally, one of which is a Pink Birdo who appears at the very start of stage 4-3. This Birdo will always respawn when defeated when you leave the area through a door and return again. The reason why is that the eggs she fires are actually meant to be used to ride across a large chasm to reach the rest of the level, which is probably one of my favourite little gimmicks in the game.
Mouser is the first main boss in the game, a Mouse with sunglasses who likes to throw bombs everywhere, naturally the way to beat him is to throw his bombs back at him. I remember finding this boss a little annoying mostly as he’s on a platform above you, and only gets effected by the bomb if it goes off where he’s standing. Due to his erratic movements this can be down to luck somewhat as to whether he’ll stand in the right spot when the bomb explodes, although it’s hardly a difficult battle overall. What’s probably most interesting to me about Mouser is that he is probably the boss who varies the most between versions of the game. In the original form of the game, Doki Doki Panic he appeared as a boss three times, with a green eared version in stage 3-3 and a white furred version in 5-3. Super Mario Bros 2 replaced the version in 5-3 with another boss, and then Super Mario Advance replaced the green eared version with Robo Birdo, but actually had a second boss battle with the regular Mouser replace a second boss battle with another character. Tryclyde is the next boss faced all versions of the game, being a three headed snake that shoots fireballs and has to have mushroom blocks thrown at it. Interestingly Tryclyde appears again as a boss in SMB2 but in Super Mario Advance it’s replaced in it’s second battle by Mouser. Another odd factor with Tryclyde is in Super Mario Bros 2 it is red, but in the remake for Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance it is instead green with red patterns on it’s back. It’s particularly odd in this case as some enemies, Cobrats who are single headed snakes that appear in the game remain red in all versions. Tryclyde is more of a challenging boss than Mouser and caused me perhaps a death or two but wasn’t that tough overall. The next boss is probably the one I had the most trouble with, Fryguy a living flame. Due to being a flame, touching Fry Guy at all causes damage, so you have to throw mushroom blocks at him. What makes this battle more difficult is that Fryguy moves around a fair bit, and hitting him with the mushroom blocks due to this without being hit yourself can be a lot more tricky. On top of this, when you beat the first phase of the boss fight, Fryguy then splits into four smaller versions that can be just as tricky to hit and all need to be extinguished in order to beat him. Fryguy is probably second only to Wart when it comes to how often I’d die to him, and I think in this playthrough actually killed me more than Wart did. Clawgrip the crab is the final of the standard bosses in the game, throwing boulders at you which have to be picked up and thrown back at him. I remember this battle being a little tricky as landing on the boulders properly could be tough, and approaching from the side at all would cause you damage, but overall he was less tough than Fryguy to me. Clawgrip replaced the white Mouser and was the only boss who wasn’t in Doki Doki Panic (besides Robo Birdo.) Every boss is voiced in this version of the game and I find them fun little voicelines overall that make them more memorable, with lines like Mouser going “Here, have some bombs!” or Birdo’s “This is as far as you go!”
The final two levels are the most difficult overall, not being as irritating to me as the digging through sand or whale sections earlier in the game, but more difficult stages overall than the others, with the first having you travelling across clouds with a lot of enemies and pits to overcome and the second being a big palace which is probably the biggest maze in the game. They are both however, probably my favourite levels in the game overall. I tend to have an affinity for cloud based sky stages and I find the palace a fitting final location. Wart is the final boss of the game and is fought in a room with the Dream Machine which he has been using possibly to create the various monsters that make up his army of bad dreams. The Dream Machine seems to perhaps possess some sort of sentience however, as in the final battle it starts shooting out vegetables which can be grabbed and thrown into Wart’s mouth to defeat him. Wart fights by shooting out bubbles and it is only when he opens his mouth to do so he can be hurt by throwing a vegetable in there, which was why at the start of the game Mario was told about Wart hating them as a hint. I remember having some trouble years ago with timing the vegetables so as to not get hit by the bubbles, but this time it went fairly smoothly and I beat Wart I think first time. With Wart defeated you go through to the next room and free the native inhabitants of Subcon from a jar, who celebrate Mario, Luigi, Toad and Peach defeating Wart and saving them before seeming to throw the defeated Wart out of the Palace. With this, the scene then switches to Mario in bed, revealing the whole game was a dream as cast credits for all of the enemies in the game go by, which in the original version of the game had a couple of mistakes such as Ostro, a minor enemy and Birdo’s names being swapped, which is corrected in this version. It’s a nice ending and for those who overanalyse these games like me, somewhat interesting as a few of the enemies who first appeared in this game such as Shy Guys and Snifits actually also appeared in Yoshi’s Island when Mario was a baby, so as this is part of a dream those memories might be related to them appearing in Wart’s army of bad dreams, although I know it’s probably nothing that deep overall. So overall, I enjoyed playing through this game, it’s not overly long or difficult and as a portable game back when it came out and the first example of what the GBA could do, it was very good overall I’d say.
Specific aspects about the game relating to Peach in Smash.
I’ve pretty much gone over the main aspects of Princess Peach in this game when it comes to Super Smash Bros, this game was the origin of Peach’s floating jump ability and her pulling turnips out of the ground to throw at enemies. In Super Smash Bros, very rarely Peach can pull other items out of the ground instead of a turnip, one of which being a Bob-omb, which is possible also in Super Mario Bros 2 where some of the tufts of grass when pulled will turn out to be a Bob-omb which has to be thrown away immediately or else it will explode on you. Other than this however, most of Peach’s other moves come from other games I will cover later, such as her frying pan being from Super Mario RPG, Tennis Racket and Golf Club from their respective sports series and Parasol from various other games. There’s nothing really to customise so that’s pretty much it for Peach’s appearance in this game.

I wrote something new for my Brotherswap AU. This time, it’s some Mario x Peach fluff! I’m not used to writing any of these characters at all, so I apologize if I messed up their personalities or dialogue.
I tried to convey that Mario and Luigi are still themselves, despite some changes to their personalities caused by their different circumstances in this universe. I don’t know how well that got across. (Just in case the story didn’t make it clear enough: Mario only acts shy around Peach, which of course is because of his crush on her.)
Oh, and for anyone who isn’t familiar with this AU: basically, Mario and Luigi’s roles are switched. Luigi is the hero, and Mario is the one who doesn’t get much attention.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I wanted this to take place during a party but I wasn’t sure what to have the party be for (I didn’t want it to be another “rescued from Bowser” party), so I randomly went with “the summer solstice”.
Story is under the cut. Hope you enjoy it!
--
It was the night of the summer solstice. Every year, the Mushroom Kingdom held a festival for this occasion at Peach's castle.
The castle was crowded that night. It seemed as if the entire kingdom had come to celebrate. There were so many people there that some of them had to stand outside. Fortunately, the castle staff was prepared for this, and had food and activities available both indoors and outdoors.
Peach scanned the crowd, looking for one specific person. She was a little worried that he wouldn't be here, given his anxiety around large crowds. However, he had promised that he would come, and he wasn't one to go back on his word. Finally, Peach spotted a man in green.
"Luigi!" she shouted with a wave.
Luigi looked up, and smiled when he saw her. "Hey, Princess!"
Peach went over to him and gave him a hug. "It's good to see you, especially when I'm not being kidnapped."
Luigi hugged her back. "Yeah, it's nice to have a break for once."
They let go of each other, but kept smiling.
"How have you been?" Peach asked.
"I've been doing okay. I've been very busy, though. There was a huge pipe problem in Toad Town that everyone was expecting me to fix. Good thing Mario was there to help!"
"Where is Mario, anyway?" Peach asked. "Did he stay home again? He's been doing that so much lately."
Luigi grinned triumphantly. "Nope! I got him to come with me this time."
Peach's heart fluttered. "Really? Where is he?"
"Probably eating all of the cake," Luigi said with a chuckle. "We should go find him before there's none left."
Sure enough, Mario was stuffing his face with cake.
"Come on!" a toad groaned. "Leave some for the rest of us, uh...Marvin, was it?"
"It's Mario," Luigi corrected.
Mario turned around. "Hey, Bro!"
His demeanor turned shy when he saw who was with Luigi. "Oh, and...P-Princess."
Peach smiled. "Hello, Mario! It's good to see you. I'm really glad you came."
Mario fidgeted with his gloves. "It's good to see you too."
An awkward silence followed.
Peach coughed. "Luigi, would you mind taking care of that...thing we talked about?"
Luigi looked confused. "What thing, Princess?"
"You know…" Peach glanced back and forth between Luigi and Mario.
"Oh." Luigi realized what Peach was trying to do. "Right, right! I'll go, uh...do the thing."
He gave her a quick wink before running off (most likely planning to hide from the crowd in the bathroom again).
"What was that about?" Mario asked.
"Oh, nothing." Peach made a beckoning motion. "Mario, will you please come with me? I want to talk to you."
"Me?" Mario winced at how his voice cracked when he said that. He cleared his throat. "S-sure, Princess."
He finished the last bit of his cake, then practically jumped over to Peach.
"Okie dokie! Lead the way, Your Majesty!"
Peach smiled. "This way, please."
Peach led Mario through the castle. They soon came to a flight of stairs.
"I've never been to this part of the castle before," Mario said curiously.
"I don't bring many people here."
Peach glanced around to make sure no one was watching, then grinned mischievously. She leaned down towards Mario's ear.
"I'll race you to the top," she whispered.
Mario grinned back. "You're on, Princess!"
The two stood at the very bottom of the stairs.
"Ready…" Peach said. "Go!"
The two began to run up the stairs. Well, Peach ran. Mario's method was to use his signature jump, which allowed him to climb multiple stairs at a time. He may not have been able to jump as high as Luigi, but it was still rather impressive.
Mario reached the top first.
"Yahoo!" he cheered, doing a victory pose.
Peach giggled. "Oh, darn! You win, Mario."
When she got to the top, she motioned for Mario to follow her again. They soon came to a set of double doors. Peach opened the doors, and the two stepped out onto a balcony. They were greeted with a cool breeze, a strong contrast to the blistering heat they had endured during the day.
"This part of the castle gives me the best view of the stars," said Peach.
Mario looked up at the sky, eyes filled with wonder. "Mama Mia…"
"Beautiful, isn't it?" Peach asked softly.
Mario nodded. Then he looked back at her. "Oh, yeah, didn't you want to talk to me about something?"
Peach nodded. She was a little nervous, but she couldn't put this off any longer. She took a deep breath before she began.
"Mario...I'm sure you've heard those rumors about Luigi and me."
"Oh. Yeah, I have." Mario averted his gaze, his expression neutral. "Luigi, uh...he said none of that was true."
Peach nodded. "People like to speculate about us being a couple, but we're just friends. Luigi is a great guy, but he's not really my type."
"Really?" Mario's eyes shifted nervously. "So, uh...what is your type? I-if you don't mind me asking, I mean."
Peach smiled. "Well...there is a guy that I like. He's a little shorter. He's outgoing and energetic, and loves a challenge. He's very kind and selfless, and is always willing to help those in need. He's very supportive of his brother. He absolutely loves cake. And, he has the most adorable smile."
"Wow," Mario replied. "Sounds like a great guy. Does he know you like him?"
Peach blinked. Is he teasing me, or is he really that oblivious?
"I’m not sure if he knows."
"Well, you should tell him! I'm sure he would like you back."
"Oh?" Peach playfully raised an eyebrow. "Why do you think that?"
"Well…" Mario looked down at his hands. "You're very kind and compassionate, always looking out for your people. You have a pretty voice, and a cute laugh. You're really fun to go kart racing with, or play party games with, or do anything with. A-and, you're really beautiful too. You're a wonderful person, and anyone would be lucky to be loved by you."
Mario was blushing, and Peach was pretty sure she was too.
Wow...he really feels that way about me?
"S-sorry, was that weird?" Mario asked.
"Not at all. I think that's really sweet of you to say." Peach walked closer to Mario. "So...you think I should tell him?"
Mario nodded.
"Hmmm, maybe I'll do it now," Peach continued. "He's here at the party right now, so this is a good chance."
"He is? You should go find him, then!"
Oh dear, Peach thought. He really is that oblivious.
"I don't have to."
"Huh?" Mario looked confused. "What do you mean?"
Peach gently took Mario's hand in her own. "Because he's right here."
Mario stared blankly at their intertwining hands for a minute, as if trying to comprehend the words he had just heard. Then his eyes went wide.
"...Oh. Oh."
Peach giggled. "I like you, Mario. I like your laugh, your smile, your voice, your energy, your loyalty to your brother, everything. I think you're a great person, and that you deserve more appreciation than you get."
"You...you really think so?" Mario asked softly.
He's not used to being complimented by people other than his brother, is he? Peach realized with a pang of sadness.
She knelt down beside Mario. Gently, she removed his hat. She was amused at his confused look.
"Yes, Mario. I mean every word.”
And with that, she planted a kiss on his nose.
Mario's face turned almost as red as his hat, eyes wide in surprise. Peach giggled. Once the shock wore off for Mario, a bashful smile formed on his face.
"Th-thank you, Princess. That means a lot, coming from you."
Peach ruffled Mario's hair with her free hand. "There's no need to be so formal when it's just us. You can call me Peach."
"Okay, Pr--uh, Peach."
Peach stood back up, still holding Mario's hat.
"Can I have that back now?" Mario asked.
"Hmmm, I dunno…" Peach said with a teasing smirk.
She took off her crown and put the hat on her head. "How do I look?"
Mario giggled. "Not bad!"
Gosh, he's so cute, Peach thought.
"Here." She placed her crown on Mario's head. "Now you can be the princess!"
Mario grinned. "For my first act as princess, I declare that everyday shall be National Pizza Day!"
Peach bowed. "It shall be done, your majesty!"
They both laughed.
"Ahem."
They both turned towards the sound of the voice. Toadsworth was standing in the doorway, tapping his foot.
"Princess, the guests are getting restless. They keep asking where you are. Please come back downstairs as soon as possible, before they begin to fear that you've been captured again."
"I’ll be right there, Toadsworth." Peach turned to Mario. "Well, this was fun while it lasted. We'll have to pick a less busy night to go on a date."
Mario nodded. "I'd like that."
After swapping hats again, the two followed Toadsworth back downstairs. The old toad's suspicious glances in Mario's direction didn't go unnoticed by either of them.
When they returned to the party, they quickly spotted Luigi at the snack table. He waved at them. Peach gave him a wink. He beamed in return.
"Will you excuse me for a moment?" Mario asked Peach.
Peach nodded. "Of course."
As Peach went to see her other guests, Mario went over to Luigi.
"I saw that." Mario crossed his arms. "You two planned this, didn't you?"
Luigi smiled sheepishly. "Heh, looks like you caught me, Bro. After you told me you liked her, I talked to her and found out that she liked you too. So I encouraged her to confess to you, and I suggested she do it during the festival."
"So you didn't just drag me out here because you thought I needed to get out more. You wanted to set me up with Pe--the princess."
Luigi nodded, looking rather proud of himself.
Mario smiled softly. "Thanks, Weeg."
Luigi hugged him lightly. "Anything for my Big Bro!"
He let Mario go. "Now go find your girlfriend. I'm sure you want to spend some time with her."
Mario's heart skipped a beat at the word "girlfriend".
I guess she really is my girlfriend now, isn't she?
He waved as he walked away. "Catch you later, Weeg. And make sure there's some cake left later!"
"As if you haven't had enough already," he heard Luigi mumble.

- Paper Mario
The bros fall into a rhythm pretty fast after 64. Bowser remains strangely absent, but packs of his troops start slipping past the Mushroom Kingdom’s borders and causing trouble—a mess Mario happily attends to when Toadsworth asks him. Mario convinces Luigi to join him on some of these little adventures, but for the most part, Luigi prefers to run his utilities business in Toad Town. He has a hard time staying out of things, though. Trouble seems intent on coming to him.
Luigi ends up doing a lot of damage control—helping locals pick up the pieces after Mario drives off Bowser’s troops. This setup puts him working closely with Toadsworth, who grows to like him a lot. Knowing full-well about the prophecies, Toadsworth uses the proximity to push Luigi towards work with Mario more often, something Luigi has mixed feelings about.
When Bowser finally shows up again he has the Star Rod, throwing Mario headlong into his next big adventure. This story sends Mario all over the Mushroom Kingdom and surrounding territories, where we get to see first-hand the fallout caused by the Mushroom Kingdom absconding with Bowser’s land. Loyalty to Bowser’s family lingers in the territories he used to own, causing tension between species and setting the stage for more political storylines in future.
This is also Mario’s first direct contact with the star spirits, as he personally meets the beings Geno told him about in RPG. His encounters with them deepen his knowledge of star lore and the adventure as a whole introduces him to the type of magical item he’ll have to deal with in future, driving home how dangerous they can be.
- Super Star Saga
What starts as a friendly visit from a long-term ally goes horribly wrong, pitching Mario into another wild adventure. Only this time, Luigi gets roped in too, and he’s not happy about it.
This is the bro’s first substantial adventure together. Cackeletta, who’s whole shtick is studying old writings, immediately suspects they are the “heroes of prophecy,” and the appearance of their “hand abilities” clears away any doubt. The fight escalates quickly as she recognizes the danger and treats them as the threat they are before the bros understand what’s going on.
The seemingly unfounded intensity definitely scares the bros—Luigi because he has no idea what he’s doing and Mario because he doesn’t want Luigi to get hurt—but they discover pretty quick that they make a virtually unstoppable team.
The story of Cackletta’s defeat spreads faster and farther than any of Mario’s solo adventures ever have, both through the general public and underground, among less savory circles. Any question of whether the prophecies refer to the bros vanishes completely, and slowly but surely, the most powerful eyes in that world turn towards Mario and Luigi.
- Luigi’s Mansion
Years of tension between King Boo and E. Gadd finally come to a head when E. Gadd captures Boolossus. King Boo storms his research facility in the mansion planning to end him, but E. Gadd isn’t there. Unphased, King Boo frees all the professor’s ghosts and lies in wait for his return. But as time drags on, the king becomes bored, and he makes a hap-hazard stab at another of his looming agendas.
The Mario bros have been on King Boo’s radar for a while. Mario in particular has become a powerful piece on the political board—a piece King Boo would love to own. He’s quite familiar with the prophecies surrounding the bros, and I’m pretty sure he played a part in their kidnaping all those years ago on Yoshi’s Island. Now that they’re back in the mushroom world, why not try again?
King Boo sends the mansion flier to Luigi, just to see what happens. The king’s plan: if Luigi shows up, capture him and use him to bait Mario. When Mario shows up first, the king is ecstatic, but he makes a severe miscalculation when it comes to Luigi.
Another important element of this story is a first contact with characters from other worlds. This prepares the way for more adventures of that nature later in the timeline.
- Super Mario Sunshine
Almost immediately after Luigi’s Mansion, the Delfino Island disaster goes down. Mario and Luigi (particularly Mario) have acted as Peach’s bodyguard more and more, and Toadsworth wants to make the position official. He invites the bros to come on Peach’s planned vacation to Delfino Island as unspoken protection. Luigi, still rattled from his fight with King Boo, opts to look after things back home instead.
Of course, things don’t go as planned. The islanders accuse Mario of the recent disasters on the island and take him into custody. With Mario out of the way, “Shadow Mario” steals Princess Peach with little opposition.
Through this story we start to explore why Bowser acted so desperately in his last few fights. Now, with whatever prospects he had destroyed through a mix of personal issues and his inability to take back his lost territory from the Mushroom Kingdom, he’s left to raise his son alone. It’s heavily implied that he’s in the process of adopting the koopalings as well. It’s in this period that Bowser truly sets his eyes on Peach, both as a “replacement mother,” for his suddenly large family, and as a way to take back his stolen land by combining the MK and Darkland for good.
- Partners in Time
Ever since Luigi’s Mansion, E. Gadd has hounded Luigi to be his “apprentice” (we see a bit of it in Mario Sunshine). Exasperated, Luigi finally gives in and starts helping the professor with his crazy projects.
With Luigi’s assistance, E. Gadd builds a “time machine” and presents his handiwork to Princess Peach. When Luigi catches wind of it, he rushes to the castle to warn her that the machine isn’t safe, but he’s too late—Peach has already gone through.
The fallout of the machine causes strange portals to sprout all over the castle grounds. Mario jumps through after Peach and Luigi taggs along with him.
(No matter what he thinks, E. Gadd didn’t create a time machine. Partners in Time is not the bro’s past, rather a parallel world. This information becomes important later.)

SR64 AU (She Ra 64)
I think it’s clear that I may or may not be a part of the She-Ra fandom now. I haven’t confirmed this yet, because my brain really needs to sort things out before any confirmation has been made. Regardless, I would like to present a crossover AU idea I had this morning that I would like to share with you all. And it will cross over with a fandom I’m definitely a part of; the SMG4 universe.
So, what happens in this AU?
Well, it takes place shortly after season 5 (Despite the fact I haven’t finished Season 4 yet, but I know how it goes regardless), and Adora has found a magic rock with a face carved into it wearing a wizard’s hat and “holding” a wand. The rock wizard hits Adora with a spell that turns her into a recoloring of Mario from SM64, and sends her to the SMG4 universe, shortly after the events of the Youtube Arc.
Pretty basic premise. The rest of this post would just cover a long list of ideas that I had for this crossover. The reason why I’m not writing this as an actual fanfic is because I have no idea how to do that on here. I’m more used to Fimfiction, OK?
A crack team, involving the Princess Alliance and former Horde soldiers, led by Catra, Glimmer, and Bow, open a portal to the Mushroom Kingdom to find and rescue Adora.
Meanwhile, Adora needs help adjusting to her offbrand form with the help of Mario and SMG4. Bowser decides to help by kidnapping Princess Peach and having Adora rescue her while SMG4 and Mario teach her the ropes.
Catra, Glimmer, Bow, and Huntara attempt to begin their search for Adora, but get caught by Officer Hal Monitor, who arrests the trio for doing something Illegal.
Mermista and Sea Hawk team up with Saiko and Wimpu to look for Adora. Sea Hawk and Wimpu end up bonding over “being simps”.
Entrapta, Hordak, and Wrong Hordak search the beach for Hordak, but end up finding Fishy Boopkins hanging out with his baby brother Jub Jub. The two Horde clones end up bonding with Boopkins and Jub Jub about their brotherhood, while Entrapta writes everything down for the sake of science.
Swift Wind ends up taking a wrong turn and ends up trapped in Equestria instead.
Adora, Mario, and SMG4 end up rescuing Peach, but it hasn’t helped Adora get used to her new form. Mario remembers a similar situation, and brings Meggy Spletzer into the mix to help Adora out.
Scorpia, Lonnie, Kyle, and Rogelio find Tari defeating Belle at the arcade and decide to ask her for help. Tari is reluctant to do so, being shy about it, but agrees to do that once Kyle and Tari bond over soft things (like duckies).
Mermista’s team doesn’t find Adora, but rather find Catra’s team behind bars, and the four of them plot to break them out. Mermista, Sea Hawk, and Saiko are quickly overpowered by the Hall Monitor, but Wimpu hacks into his systems and shuts him down. Mermista’s team recovers and rescues Catra’s team.
Scorpia’s team and Tari plan ask Meggy for help in finding Adora, only to find Meggy with Adora, making Scorpia’s team the first to find Adora.
Catra’s team, Mermista’s team, and Entrapta’s team end up getting the message that Adora has been found and transformed into a Mario recolor, and plan on rendezvousing at Princess Peach’s castle for their next move.
Meanwhile, Adora, Scorpia’s team, Mario, SMG4, Meggy, and Tari all chill at the castle and play Super Smash Bros.
Catra and Mermista’s teams both try to find Entrapta’s team at the beach, but the three of them are ambushed by the Mushroom Kingdom military, led by Swagmaster and Chris.
Adora, SMG4, Scorpia, Lonnie, and Meggy quickly intervene and end the fight, causing all the teams to meet back up at the Castle.
Everyone has a grand old time, and Adora even expresses that she’s starting to get used to her new form, though still wishes to revert back to normal and go back home.
Swift Wind comes in with the help of Discord, who does just that and send everyone back home to Bright Moon. Glimmer forgot to leave someone in charge, and Bob took over as King of Bright Moon while everyone was gone.
A month or so later, a large gala is held where Adora, Glimmer, and Bow invite all their new SMG4 friends over.
So...let me know what you think of my AU idea.

Bowser Jr, opening Toon’s door: Hey, Toon. I need a- (pauses)
Bowser Jr stops talking as he seems he had interuppted Toon Link and a body pillow. Toon Link appeared to be wearing a cheerleader outfit.
Toon Link, smooching a body pillow: Mmm…your so good at this. You sure you didn’t practice before you came?……Hey, I’m just kidding. Let’s just cuddle…..
Toon Link proceeds to snuggle the body pillow, then notices that the door was open. He turned and saw Bowser Jr staring directly at him.
Toon Link, suprised: BJ!
Bowser Jr: ….Is that one of Ridley’s Chain Chompette body pillows?
Toon Link, sweatdrops: I can explain!
Bowser Jr: Stop. I don’t even want to know. I need your help with something.
Toon Link: Uh, sure. (Throws the body pillow aside) What’s up?
Bowser Jr, sighs: It’s my dad. Despite everything I’m able to do and accomplished in the past, he still treats me like a little kid!
Toon Link, sitting up on his bed: Well, aren’t you six years old?
Bowser Jr: Six and a half. Anyway, I figured the only way for him to start treating me like I’m more mature is to prove that I can do what he can!
Toon Link: So, like, kidnap a princess?
Bowser Jr: Yeah, but a bit differently. Instead of just kidnapping a princess, demand the kingdom fall and swear allegiance to me, fortify my defenses so that some random person doesn’t show up and ruin everything, and wait for them to give into my demands. And once I have control of the kingdom, systematically infiltrate the other kingdoms that said kingdom has, and force them to swear allegiance by way of preventing trade of some of their natural resources, or by toppling their potentially flimsy economy. And if I’ve learned anything about my universe, our economies make absolutely no sense so it’ll be pretty easy. And, if everything goes according to plan, in about…eh, five years I would become a tyrant like none other has seen. And then, the world will be mine!
Toon Link: ….
Bowser Jr: ….
Toon Link: Okay, we both know your dad is no where near that smart to think of all that.
Bowser Jr: (Sighs) Fine, I’ll just do EXACTLY like he does and steal a princess.
Toon Link: Then why come to me?
Bowser Jr: I can’t go to the other girls here! My dad knows that if I make some claim that I kidnapped them, he’s going to instantly know that it’s all for show.
Toon Link: Considering if it was even possible. Why not go to one of our friends and ask them to put on a dress and pretend?
Bowser Jr: Leaf’s Charizard will attack almost everybody, Agent 3 took the other Inklings to go do some, according to Blue, spirit shattering training, Ashley would just leave before I get the question out, Bonny Janet would suplex me over a table, and I’m 75% sure the Ice Climbers are part winter coat.
Toon Link: Huh. That makes sense.
Bowser Jr: And that’s why I came to you. You’re the only person who I can talk about this to and pass for a girl if he dresses as one.
Toon Link, does a hairflip: Well, you are right about that part. And I do make an attractive princess.
Bowser Jr: So you’ll do it?
Toon Link: Depends. What’s in it for me?
Bowser Jr: I’ll do your chores for a week, $30, and I’ll even throw in my share of garlic knots.
Toon Link: I do love garlic knots….make it $35 and you got a deal.
Later….
Bowser Jr is hovering in his clown car with a blonde “princess” wearing a lime green dress with a dark blue bow on their head while some of the other Smashers look up in confusion.
Bowser Jr: Mwahahahaha!! I’ve kidnapped Princess….(thinking of a name)…..Toonko! And now, the totally real Waker Kingdom is all mine! Read it and weep, chumps!
Princess Toonko: Help me!
Mario, drinking coffee: …Someone else can get it. I’m on break.
Captain Falcon: Doesn’t that girl look a lot like Toon Link?
Bowser: Of course not! Didn’t you hear? She’s from the Waker Kingdom! And my son successfully kidnapped her! I’m proud of you, my boy!

The Legend of the Mario Bros Episode 1 (1up Deadfic)
Author’s Note: Warning. This might hurt XD.
Alright, you thought some of the shit I’ve posted here was old, you thought some of it was corny, some of you even thought some of it was embarrassing! But today my friends, you will see the true pinnacle of old embarrassing and corny fan fiction!
This is by far, the oldest piece of writing I’ve posted on this tumblr. You see, this was made in 2010. Yes, even seven years ago I was still writing...and boy have I changed over the years.
This particular story came about because I wanted to tell a reboot origin of the Mario Brothers with a darker edge similar to the Nolan Batman movies (The Dark Knight was only two years old at this point and was very fresh in my mind).
This also came about because of the original Super Mario Brothers movie (a film I quite like). I had the idea that the reason people didn’t like the movie wasn’t necessarily because of all the adaptation changes but because of the Genre shift. I thought that, had the film been a quirky fantasy instead of quirky sci-fi, people would’ve been far more forgiving of elements like the girl being Daisy, the subplot of the rock, etc.
And that’s what I set out to do. Play loose with the source material, get dark, except this time go with the fantasy angle. However, there was an unforeseen problem, this isn’t really a darker look at the Mario origin....It’s what a 13 year old idiot thinks is a darker look at the Mario origin.
So you get lame attempts at edgy storytelling, however there’s something even more egregious. You see, I wasn’t really ready to tackle on the full “Write like it was a professional book” thing so, I wrote in script format! No, I am not shitting you! I did this!
So get ready to cry ladies and gentleman, cuz here we go!
Episode 1: Origin FLASH! FLASH! Many cameras as King Toadstool (wearing a neat robe and crown) walks up to the stage, then many cheers and claps are heard as he sets up the microphone.   Person: King Toadstool! King Toadstool! King Toadstool: Uh, yes you there. Person: King Toadstool, what’s your opinion on the ongoing Subcon war? The flash photography keeps going. King Toadstool: Uh, no comment but as you see we seem to have it under control- Person: But sir, Subcon has incredibly gotten stronger and stronger each day! King Toadstool: Well, we’re handling on it, as you can see our new representative is dealing with these issues. And of course, I’m talking about our new representative, uh, ladies and gentlemen, may I present Wart! Then most people roar of applause as Wart the new representative (with a blue cape and business clothes) comes to the stage and acknowledges the cheers. Wart: Uh…thank you. The people still cheer. Wart: Thank you ladies and gentlemen. Uh- The people still cheer. Wart: Thank you people. The people stop cheering. Wart: Now as you see, our new weapons, the Bob-ombs (shows people) of course and the Bullet Bills. People ooh and ah at the Bullet Bills. Wart: Now listen. I know times are tough, and everything may seem bad, but things will always get worse before they get better. More people applaud as Wart then raises his hands to silence the people. Wart: Well, if there aren’t any other questions I guess I’ll leave now. But then one person raises his hand. It’s the same one who asked King Toadstool some questions. Person: Sir, what about the Scared 2? Wart: Well, we haven’t found anything yet, but trust me we’ll find them and take care of them, because god knows……we need them now. Wart then sees a cloaked figure shows a sign that means “Come here.” Wart: Uh, that’s it now. Goodbye. Wart then leaves as some people are puzzled. Then the cloaked disappears as well. King Toadstool then approach’s the stand. King Toadstool: Well, uh…I’ll go follow Wart. King Toadstool leaves suddenly as the people are now totally confused. Then, Toadstool follows Wart and stops him. King Toadstool: Tell me you got it under control! Wart: Trust me Toadstool! Everything’s fine! King Toadstool: Fine?!?!?!?! You call Subcon somehow infiltrating our base and stealing our weapons fine?! It’s a disaster! You said that everything will change for the better! You said my daughter will live in a better world. Wart then stops. Wart: And I meant it. But it’ll take a while! Trust me! Everything will be better soon! Wart then leaves as King Toadstool stands there. King Toadstool: For your sake I hope your right. Then, in an abandoned parking lot, the cloaked figure is standing in the middle, as Wart approaches. The cloaked figure quickly turns around but then sighs in relief. ??? : You know, you ought to say something before you stalk behind something. Wart: You should’ve stayed here where I put you! ??? : There’s been a change of plans. Wart: What?! ??? : We found them. Wart: What?! ??? : Yeah. We have everything their names address every single thing. Wart: Good, then get ready. Part 2 will soon begin. Come on Kamek. Kamek then takes off his hood. Wart: Let’s go. ??? : Oh, so you think that just because you know where these guys are, you can just get rid of them and the prophecy will be over? Wart and Kamek turn around to see another figure in a circle of light. His face is blocked by the darkness surrounding the circle. But his voice seems very familiar to both Wart and Kamek. Wart: Well if it isn’t my asylum freakish brother, Koopa. Bowser: Actually its Bowser moron. Wart: Well, what are you doing here? If you think I’ll agree to partner with you, your nuts. Bowser: Oh, I’m pretty sure you won’t agree with me. Since you think I’m a complete embarrassment to you. Wart: Well you are. Just think of it. Wart, representative of the Mushroom Counsel, the first amphibian ever to have this possession, related to Koopa, a maniac who was locked up in an asylum. I shiver thinking about it! Bowser: Oh yeah, your embarrassed to be around me, when uh Kamek is it? Has done more dangerous and critical crimes than me? Wart: The difference is Kamek can erase all of his records. Something you still to this day have failed at. Bowser: Oh, just because of that, he’s better? Oh bravo Wart, you are so smart! (Fake claps while falsely smiling though they couldn’t see it.) Wart: Don’t insult me you filthy swine! Bowser: Hey, all I’m trying to say is, you can’t possibly stall the prophecy if you’re going to go ahead with your plan. Wart: I’m not going to stall it! I’m going to end it! I’m going to kill them both. That way, the prophecy will die and it’ll take a million years for 2 more to be born but by then, the Mushroom Kingdom will end. Bowser: Your nuts if you think that’s going work. Remember that special “power”? Wart: I’ll take care of it. Bowser: You think that’ll work? Wart: Stop stalling! Kamek! We are leaving now! Bowser: Ok then. Leave. Wart and Kamek then leave as Bowser grunts, meanwhile, at the Mario’s house. Martha and James Mario (Who’s wearing a black suit with a white shirt and black tie) are busy getting ready for a party they’re attending. James: Martha! Are you ready? Martha then comes in looking busy. Her red dress is marvelous and neat looking. Her red high heels are magnificent and elegant. Martha: Yeah, just got to do one more thing. James: What? Martha then looks at James as if she couldn’t believe he said it. Martha: Our kids! James: OH! Sorry! James then heads to the nursery where their suns Mario and Luigi are. Mario and Luigi are playing in their crib as Martha and James come in. Martha then looks at the brothers and holds each one and kisses both of them. James: Uh Martha? (Points at watch) Martha: Hold on! Martha then picks up Mario and looks at Mario first, she smiles, and then she puts Mario down, after that, Martha picks up Luigi and does the same. Then after she puts Luigi down, she turns to James. Martha: Ok, we can go now. James: Look I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be late for this! Martha: Ok, we can go now. Martha and James then leave as Mario and Luigi just sleep there quietly. Meanwhile, at the party, Martha and James arrive to the party in time as they open the door to find a costume party. Martha then gives James that look again. James: What?! Martha: You took me away from my two boys, just to drag me to a costume party?! We don’t even have costumes. James: Actually, (looking at Martha) you’re a rose. Martha: I guess (looks at her dress) but what about you? James: Uh, excuse me. James then unbuttons the rest of his jacket, puts on black sunglasses and a black hat. James: Oh who I am you might ask? Uh, Jake, “Joliet” Jake if you may. Martha then sighs and puts on a little smile as James goes to the snack bar Martha then sits down in a chair. Meanwhile James is sipping some fruit punch as he bumps into someone. James: Oh uh, sorry man. The person turns around to face James. He had a red suit complete with a hood. His pants were blue. And he had a mask, which was white and had 3 holes (2 eyes and a Mouth). James: Uh, what are you anyway? The person then shrugs. ??? : I don’t know. This person was in fact, a Shy-Guy, one of Wart’s minions. James: Then, why are you dressed as it? ??? : I don’t know. James: Ok. James then goes somewhere else as the person draws out a walkie talkie. ??? : Targets are here sir. Meanwhile at that same parking lot, Wart is holding a walkie talkie too. Wart: Great. Now, you know what to do. Now, back at the party, ??? : Of course. The person then grins as he then walks somewhere else. Meanwhile at the parking lot again. Wart: Ok. Now that the Shy-Guys are in check we can kidnap the Mario Bros and kill them at our lair. Kamek: But, why not kill them at their house why wait- Wart: SHUT UP!!!! Kamek: Ok, ok, ok! Jeez. Wart: Now as I was saying- Back at the party, the person is now walking towards Martha. ??? : Sup. Martha: Uh, hi? ??? : Mind if I sit here. The person puts his glass down. Martha: Uh, sort of. My husband might come back, so just to make sure. ??? : Well, ok, I’ll go somewhere else- The person then purposely drops Martha’s glass. ??? : Aw man! I’m sorry! Martha: Oh it’s ok. (Half sarcasm) Just like blowing my kids off just for a costume party. ??? : Oh. Uh, here have mine. The person then hands Martha his. Martha: Ah no thanks. I don’t need it anyway. ??? : Hey come on, it’s the least I can do. Martha: Ok, fine. Martha takes the drink. The person then leaves as Martha then drinks some of the punch. Martha: Ugh! It tastes horrible. Martha puts it down. But then, there’s a sweet aftertaste, as Martha has another drink. It actually tastes better than before. Meanwhile at Toadstool Castle, King Toadstool is sitting at his throne. King Toadstool:  “Sigh”, This Kingdom will never be ok will it? King Toadstool waits around to see if an answer will surface, but that never happens. King Toadstool: I need more friends. Later at the party, Martha has entirely drunk the entire glass that person had given her. Now she was feeling very hungry and tired. Martha then gets up and finds James, dancing on the dance floor. Martha: Ugh! James: (stops dancing) you alright? Martha: What does it look like genius?! Of course I’m not. James: Ok, jeez woman. Come on lets go. Martha: Can we get some tacos on the way? James then stops and looks at his wife. James: Ok, seriously, what’s up? Martha: Nothing, I just want some Tacos. James: (looks suspicious) Ok? Martha: Well?! Are you going to stand there or are you going to go to the car and start it! James: (Mumbles) if I got a dime for every time I… Martha: Well MOVE!!!!! James: GRR! James then opens the door and has Martha go through first, though James had no choice because Martha rushed through before James could move any more. Then in the parking lot, Martha waited for James to open the door for her. Martha: AHEM! James: GRR! James then opened the door for her as he got in his own and started. After a long trip at Taco Bell (Martha couldn’t decide if she wanted Burritos or not. Martha decided that she wanted some.)   James: Are you good now? Martha: (Eating) Oh yeah. This is good. James: Eat with your mouth closed please? Martha: Hey, I’m hungry here! James: So? Martha: So I need to eat! James: Ugh! Martha: Just keep driving. James: Hey! Can you at least give me my food?   Martha: Why do you need to eat? (Big swallow) Just drive! James: Meany. Martha: Just drive. But then Martha gets even hungrier as he begins shoving the food in her mouth. James: Martha! Stop shoveling! Martha: Stop talking! Meanwhile at the parking lot, Wart is then checking a camera installed in the car. Kamek: Nice move there Wart. Wart: I know it was. Kamek: So what was that stuff that girl drank? Wart: Superior Nitro. Kamek: Oh. Wait! Isn’t that the stuff where one-? Wart: Uh-huh. Kamek: Wow. You stoop very low sometimes. Wart: I know. It’s a curse. Back at the car, Martha then starts seeing bright stars everywhere. Martha: Wow. Pretty! Martha puts up this goofy smile and sits there looking funny. James: You ok? Martha: Uh huh! Oh, their now bunnies. James: Honey? Martha then closes her eyes and slumps back. James: Hello? Martha then wakes up and sees a black and damp jungle full of centipedes, and spiders. Martha: AHH!   James: Martha! What’s wrong?! Martha turns and looks at James but she instead sees a flies head that’s buzzing. Martha: AAAH! GET AWAY! GET AWAY! GET AWAY! Martha then starts unloosening her seatbelt and gets out of the car. James, horrified, stops the car and gets out trying to find Martha. He finds Martha looking around everywhere. But in her mind, Martha keeps hearing her baby’s squeals of laughter but doesn’t find them. And finally James gets close to her, but all she sees is her husband and kids in a mirror, she tries to get in the mirror but fails. Martha finally falls down and hears something. ??? : Good night! Sleep tight! Martha’s eyes then close as James tries shaking her up. But she doesn’t budge! James then lays her down, and cries uncontrollably as he gets up. James: Good-bye Martha.   James then heads for his car until he’s hit in the head. And the last thing he sees before fainting. He sees the same guy from the party. James: You! James then blacks out. Meanwhile at the Mario’s house, the Shy-Guys broke into the house, and kidnapped the Mario Bros. Shy-Guy #1: We got them! Let’s go! The Shy-Guys then run from the Mario house as they head to a place where a giant bird is waiting for them. Shy-Guy #1: Albatoss! We’re here. The Albatoss then sat down, ready for the Shy-Guys to get on.  The Shy-Guys with the Mario Bros. and sat on tight. For 10 minutes the Albatoss was just flying. Until they were crossing the mountains, and suddenly, Mario was slipping off. The Shy-Guys tried to catch Mario but instantly he fell off. Mario then (in a bag of course) fell and fell until he landed on Yoshi’s Island. Shy-Guy #2: Aw CRAP!     Shy-Guy #4: Wart won’t like this. Shy-Guy #5: Let’s just pretend it didn’t happen ok? Ok. Let’s just go to Subcon already. The Albatoss then continues to fly towards Subcon. (End of Episode 1)

Mario & Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story Playthrough
Tumblr media
Fighter: King Bowser Koopa.
Game: Mario & Luigi Bowser’s Inside Story, Nintendo DS. First Released on February 11th 2009.
Fighter Bio.
King Bowser Koopa, the King of the Koopas is the most common threat to the safety of the Mushroom Kingdom and many places beyond. Bowser is most commonly the antagonist of the Super Mario series and a few of the spinoff series in various forms too. When Bowser is not the main antagonist, he will often either be a threat running alongside the main conflict, appearing to cause problems and derailing the heroes and other villain if one is involved, or he will begrudgingly team up with the heroes to take on a larger threat, although often under the guise he’s allowing the heroes to help him rather than helping them. Despite his constant antagonism, Bowser is prepared to put aside his evil ambitions to take part in various sports and competitions such as Go-Karting, Golf, Tennis and many others, often being one of the most powerful but slow competitors. He has demonstrated many different abilities over the years but his most common are his extreme strength and his ability to breath fire, something he’s been shown to have mastered to the point he can use it in a vast variety of ways, from shooting bursts of fire to large sprays of fire to even extremely fast lines of flame that he sweeps across the floor. Bowser boasts a vast loyal army, with him often finding surprisingly powerful creatures who will serve under him, from his regular Koopa Troopa and Goomba foot soldiers all the way to the giant dragon Lord of Lightning that’s head alone is larger than Bowser himself yet followed his commands (possibly under a form of mind control although it’s never explicitly confirmed.) Perhaps Bowser’s biggest strength however is his persistence, he always returns despite being defeated and facing all sorts of dangers such as falling into lava multiple times and falling from orbit down to Earth just to name a couple. His intelligence varies and most of the time this seems to be more down to his arrogance and haste, he can put some plans into motion that allow him to attain great power but will usually lose due to his hubris in the end. He often also relies upon other characters to handle the details such as Kamek for more elaborate schemes.
Bowser began his history of conflict back when he was a baby and first met Yoshi and Baby Mario, or as he called Yoshi, a ‘Green Donkey’. Kamek his loyal guardian was the one setting events in motion due to a prophecy that Baby Mario and Baby Luigi would grow up to become the Koopas greatest enemy. It was when towards the end of their adventure, Yoshi and Baby Mario reached Baby Bowser’s Castle that Baby Bowser met them for the first time, and threw a tantrum because he was woken from his nap by Kamek. He took his anger out on him before noticing Yoshi and deciding he wanted to ride him instead of Baby Mario. This led to Bowser jealously trying to knock Baby Mario off and get a ride, which ended with his defeat. Kamek dismayed used his magic to then make Baby Bowser giant, and he attempted to destroy the castle with Yoshi and Baby Mario in it. The two fought off Baby Bowser, resulting in him shrinking and being taken away by Kamek. Following this, Baby Bowser grew a hatred of Yoshis and would often get Kamek to help him try to take over their island, employing such methods as turning it into a storybook, stealing their Super Happy Tree and other such things. It was when he was seemingly somewhat older, although still a child that Baby Bowser would first set his eyes on the Mushroom Kingdom. He invaded Princess Peach’s Castle, but was beaten by Baby Mario who happened to be present. Following this, a vast plot involving time travel and alien invaders took place, with Baby Bowser meeting his older self, actually for the second time seemingly at this point. The two had not gotten along the first time they met, but this time they teamed up similarly to the Mario Bros and their Baby forms, with them having a battle in a volcano. Baby Bowser lost once again and for the first time it wasn’t to Yoshis but to the Mario Bros themselves.
Following this, Bowser seemingly quietened down for a bit. Mario seems to have moved to New Donk City, having various adventures there involving his various jobs and a certain ape. It was only many years later when the Mario Bros had seemingly returned to the Mushroom Kingdom that Bowser undertook his very first full-scale invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom, succeeding in kidnaping the Princess and taking over the land. As his older self, Bowser had seemingly learnt magic which helped him in taking over the Mushroom Kingdom, and which is something he has demonstrated other times, being able to perform various tricks such as teleporting or turning invisible. The Koopa King’s reign was short lived however, as the Mario Bros took him down, something that would become the norm from then on in the Mushroom Kingdom. Over the years, Bowser would return again and again, sometimes accompanied by the Koopalings, other times with other bosses who were Kings and Queens themselves, and eventually by his own son Bowser Jr. Bowser also has fought alongside his enemy Mario against various threats, with his power often being a great asset in taking them on. Bowser has also seen his troops sometimes hijacked by other villains through hypnosis or occasionally other means, something which arguably riles him up even more than being stopped by Mario. At first Bowser would kidnap Princess Peach simply to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, but as time went on, he seemingly began to develop a crush on her, often wishing for her to marry him, with it on some rare occasions being his main aim, although he has always been defeated before he could reach such a stage, except on one occasion where another villain married to two in order to bring about a prophecy to end all worlds. Bowser insisted it counted whilst Peach very much disagreed on that occasion.
Bowser’s personality isn’t as straightforward as it seems. Bowser is brash, villainous and willing to go to extremes to destroy his enemies and force others to do what he wants. He has overseen campaigns to steal cosmic power, try to create his own galaxy and force the Princess to marry him. There are some good traits to him as well however, most notably he will often partner up with his son in various sports and competitions and has been shown taking care to play games with him and other things. He will however get Jr involved in his schemes, although Jr is definitely a willing participant, having told him how he wants to fight Mario again after their first encounter. This does lead to Bowser getting Jr involved in dangerous situations in his fight against Mario and friends. Bowser did also try to trick Jr in his first appearance into believing Princess Peach was his Mother, although he admitted the truth and Jr told him he already knew she wasn’t. Bowser also seems to have the respect of a lot of his troops, from a fair few of the ground troops admiring him to the loyalty of the various bosses and the Koopalings. Some of them express fear of Bowser when failing him, but a lot serve him out of genuine loyalty, which has been shown when others try to take over Bowser’s forces and often have to resort to brain washing.
Friends: Of actual friends Bowser has very few. Possibly his closest confidant is Kamek who has seemingly raised him from his childhood and still faithfully serves him to this day. Bowser doesn’t show great respect towards Kamek, but he relies on him a lot when he’s present. Bowser has also had other advisors when Kamek isn’t present, a notable one being another Magikoopa called Kammy Koopa who he was similarly disrespectful of. Bowser can be notoriously difficult to get along with for those who wish to work with him, begrudgingly helping when working with his enemies and especially when working alongside another villain. This even extends to the rare times he’s worked with another version of himself, both his Baby form and his Paper form spent more time arguing with him than actually coming up with plans to defeat the Mario Bros. Bowser always has to be the leader so when it comes to his troops he tends to be more comfortable, especially when they shower him with adoration and respect. Bowser Jr admires his Father a lot, although he is not beyond pranking him and acting bratty towards him from time to time, still he will always go along with his Father’s schemes when he has the chance. Jr trusts his Father enough that he knows when something’s seriously wrong with him, as happened in one case where Jr went to the extreme of teaming up with Mario in order to save Bowser from a fury that had overtaken him. Bowser will spoil Jr often giving him all sorts of equipment and his own personal army. Their relationship definitely has its strains however with Jr sometimes feeling ignored due to Bowser’s campaigns against the Mushroom Kingdom and lacking friends his age. Bowser trusts the Koopalings although he will berate them when they fail, still it seems they also respect him and are willing to follow him no matter what, even in cases where he’s not actually in control of his own actions or has been possessed. Bowser has had such a vast army over the years that listing even just the notable members of it will go on too long. His most common troops are Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Hammer Bros, Lakitus and Magikoopas amongst many others and provided they aren’t brainwashed they will often follow his commands no matter what.
Enemies/Rivals: Mario is definitely Bowser’s arch-enemy and arch-rival, with the two facing off in almost everything they do, from fighting each other in Bowser’s plots to competing with each other in a variety of sports and activities. Luigi has a similarly antagonistic relationship with Bowser, however over the years Bowser has forgotten him, sometimes not recognising him or if he does, not remembering his name. However, following some of Luigi’s exploits in stopping him, such as in the events of Mario & Luigi Dream Team Bowser’s been angry enough to remember Luigi’s name when facing off against him. Princess Peach is technically Bowser’s enemy, although he wishes for her to be by his side rather than against him, however the feeling is not mutual and he is willing to fight Peach when she goes up against him. Yoshi and his whole species have earned Bowser’s wrath following their battles against him when he was a child, which possibly is why as a grown up he has taken to kidnapping Yoshis on occasion and forcing them into eggs stuck inside question mark blocks. Bowser thinks little of Toads with his focus usually being on Princess Peach or the Mario Bros, often with him himself barely acknowledging them. Various Toads have taken on Bowser over the years, such as Toad, Toadette, Blue Toad and Yellow Toad showing they can be as much of a threat to him as the Mario Bros, but even so Bowser seems to see them as little more than Peach’s minions. An odd case is Wario, where the two have on occasions worked together, usually in spin-off games, but also have fought each other, such as in Super Mario 64 DS where Wario joined Yoshi, Mario and Luigi in trying to save Peach from him. As with most things, it most likely depends on what will provide Wario with the biggest gain as to whether he fights with or against Bowser. Most other characters who are friends with Mario such as Rosalina, E Gadd and Princess Daisy are considered by default Bowser’s enemy, although he often won’t directly interact with them, with at most his forces causing problems for them rather than him himself. Also, despite having all of these enemies, Bowser is willing to put his animosity aside on some occasions even to take part in fair competitions with a lot of these characters.
There have been occasions also, where despite his animosity, Bowser has reluctantly teamed up with the Mario Bros and others to take on a larger threat. Chronologically the very first occasions of this were him briefly teaming up with Yoshi and the other Babies when his older self who had time travelled to the past wished to kidnap him alongside the other Star Children for his plans, although he betrayed the team towards the end of the adventure fighting them out of a belief they wanted to take his castle away. He also teamed up briefly with the Mario Bros from the future and their Baby selves against the Shroob invaders, although their union ended fairly quickly when his cruiser was shot down and they were separated, with Baby Bowser proving himself an annoyance to the Mario Bros throughout the rest of the adventure. Bowser’s first actual team up with Mario took place in Super Mario RPG with him teaming up with Mario, Princess Peach, Geno and Mallow to take on the Smithy Gang who had taken over his castle. Smithy was the first of various villains Bowser would personally fight against, never through any sense of good but usually fuelled by personal grievances, whether it was them taking control of his castle, stealing Princess Peach’s voice replacing it with an ‘explosive vocabulary’ that makes it too dangerous for him to kidnap her, seeking to take over the world when that was his plan or them seeking destruction that will leave no world for him to take over. Over the years, these villains have either beaten Bowser with ease leading him to reluctantly have to turn to Mario for help, such as with the Smithy Gang, tricked him into helping their plans such as with Count Bleck or Bowser has tried to muscle in on their plans such as with the X-Nauts. It seems following a lot of these encounters, Bowser has learnt how to be more sneaky himself over the years, with one time him teaming up with another villain only to turn on them at the last minute, leaving the Mario Bros to defeat them and stealing the ultimate power they were seeking all along for himself.
Crossovers with other Smash characters: Being from the Mario series, and Mario’s arch villain as well, Bowser has appeared in a fair few crossovers over the years. Since Bowser was part of Mario’s party in the game, he was present for Samus Aran’s cameo in Super Mario RPG, however Link’s cameo occurs before Bowser joins the party. Interestingly, Bowser cameos in Kirby Super Star in the crowd with Mario watching the Megaton Punch event, however he does not appear in the crowd in the remake on DS, with Wario seemingly appearing instead. Bowser is in Mario Kart 8 and therefore races against other characters who appear in the game such as Link (Breath of the Wild and Skyward Sword’s incarnations), Villager, Inklings and Isabelle. Bowser appears in the Game & Watch Gallery series which has the classic versions of Game & Watch games playable, making him technically appear alongside Mr Game & Watch. Bowser is part of the group in Tetris on the NES which features Pit, Link and Samus. Bowser has been in all of the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series, with him often taking a large role in the ones with a story mode, often working alongside Sonic’s arch-enemy Doctor Eggman to take on Mario and Sonic as well as their friends. Bowser is also a racer in the Mario Kart GP arcade games, which are a crossover with Pac-Man who he races against. Bowser is a playable character in the Fortune Street series, which crosses over with Dragon Quest, although none of the Dragon Quest Heroes themselves appear. Bowser probably has the most crossovers with other characters of any villain in Smash overall.

Why this game?
Well, to put it simply, this game is arguably Bowser’s starring role. His name is in the title and he’s playable as more than just a party member which is the case for his other major playable appearances (excluding spin-off titles). The reason I played the original version of the game rather than the 3DS version is simply because the 3DS version wouldn’t even be announced until a couple of years after I finished this one. With the remake, I believe there are still reasons to play either version, although I’m not sure of all of the changes in the remake I believe there are pros and cons for each rather than one version being clearly superior.

My past with this game.
So before I go into specifics of the game itself, I would like to preface this by saying, Bowser is my favourite videogame villain. I believe his strength lies in just how adaptable he is, with there being two extremes of Nintendo villains in my opinion. On one side you have Ganon, a character who as a villain is almost always played as the ultimate evil, a ruthless tyrant who will happily wipe out his enemies or enslave them in his quest for power. He is not without some nuance however, in that he states how he was influenced by the hardships his people faced that he saw, influencing him to seek power and gradually lore in the series painting a picture of him being likely a product of an older evil’s curse. On the other side of the scale you have King Dedede, a villain who is more of a petty greedy jerk at the worst of times, but more often than not is willing to team up with his arch enemy to take on far worse threats. King Dedede has performed some impressive feats which show he’s not an absolute joke of a villain, with often powerful cosmic entities seeking to take control of him due to his strength, however he is still on the far more petty and mild side of the scale when it comes to villains overall. Bowser in my opinion, is a character who can move all over the scale but still feel totally in character. He can be a petty fool at times arguing with other characters over something ridiculous, then at other times take over many galaxies in the Mario Universe building his very own Galaxy to be the base of his Galactic Empire and still not really betray the character he is. It helps that over the years he has been shown to be very temperamental, with his temper getting the better of him at times leading him to become a weak tutorial boss Mario takes down with ease at the start of the story to being later the final boss of the game on many other occasions. My main point here is that Bowser in my opinion is capable of being an actual intimidating threat and also being a source of comic relief without it not feeling like him. He can never reach the level of a villain like Ganondorf or Sephiroth in seriousness, however he always manages to provide a big threat when he needs to. As he puts it himself, he’s “grade-A, 100% prime-cut final boss!” material. Finally, one important thing to note, is the majority of the time, I find Bowser a really funny character, especially in the RPG series. Over the years he’s had some great scenes and lines and, without going into a tangent, it’s probably one of the biggest reasons I dislike Paper Mario Sticker Star so much, since him being the main villain again for the first time in that series could have been amazing if he’d said a single word. Still, that’s a whole other topic I’d rather not get into now.
Now, I realise that’s my opinion on him, not an objective fact, still it’s an important one for me personally when it comes to my history with Bowser and Bowser’s Inside Story. Before the game came out, there had been a few times Bowser had been playable, with Super Mario RPG and Super Paper Mario both having him be part of the party, being usually the power based slower team member. Bowser’s Inside Story immediately got my interest though, not only because Bowser was playable, but because he was essentially the star of the game. Mario & Luigi were still the main characters as with all the other games in the series, however whilst their gameplay seemed somewhat the same as the previous games in the series, Bowser looked to be totally unique in how he worked, with his punches and fire breath being the main tools he would use to get around the world as opposed to the Mario Bros jumping abilities. This differed from Bowser’s previous playable appearances as they would often still be more done in the style of Mario and the other playable characters, usually being just bulkier and having fire breath as an option. The Bowser in this game is based much more on him acting like how he does as a boss in games rather than emulating Mario, using his strength to get around and fight.
When I got the game, I remember loving it and playing through to the end, something I’d not managed with the previous Mario & Luigi games (usually because I’d have a specific boss I’d get stuck on and give up) so whilst it’s far too long ago now to give specific details, I feel overall I really enjoyed the game. I know I enjoyed it more than I had Partners in Time, but overall Superstar Saga still holds the fondest memories for me. As a game however Bowser’s Inside Story I could definitely see being argued as being the best of the series and I definitely consider to be as good a game overall as Superstar Saga. It also can be just as funny, especially in how Bowser himself acts and reacts to the events that take place, something that I felt could be lacking at times in Partners in Time after the hilarious Superstar Saga.

My Smash Playthrough.
So this is the first game on my list that’s a Mario RPG game, which includes a few series I’m a big fan of. I don’t really want to focus on the situation with those as a whole at this point, but I just want to stress that I really love the classic Mario RPG titles and of the Mario & Luigi series specifically, this was one of the best (arguably the best but personally I rate Superstar Saga higher). I was pretty excited to go back to this game, especially as I hadn’t played through it for some time unlike other Mario RPGs I like. When it comes to the way the game plays, a hallmark of all the Mario RPGs there’ve been so far is that there are turn based battles, but attacks often involve timing button presses in order to pull off more powerful attacks, something the Mario and Luigi arguably is the most complex example of. Outside of battles, jumping is a key part of the standard Mario RPG gameplay with the games still including many platforming elements despite being RPGs. One thing I always liked with the Mario & Luigi series was how they’d often do interesting ideas with the buttons. A would be Mario’s button which he jumps with and B would be Luigi’s button. With the DS and the addition of an X and Y button, this was used for the Baby Mario Bros in the second game, Partners in Time and for this game Bowser would use both buttons for different abilities he can use. Bowser is a big part of the game, but the game still also stars Mario & Luigi, their role this time however involves them spending a lot of the time in a somewhat unusual location, given the title you might have guessed, but that is inside Bowser’s body. Following Bowser being tricked into eating a special mushroom, he inhales the Mario Bros, Princess Peach, Starlow, Toadsworth and a group of Toads and many other objects in Princess Peach’s Castle.
Bowser starts off the game lacking many of his abilities beyond his strong punch which makes up his basic attack in the game. Mario & Luigi as the story goes on must help Bowser by solving problems in his body in order to power him up, such as getting rid of a pest he inhaled which is blocking his fire pipe which allows him to breath fire. The Mario Bros also often have to go to specific parts of Bowser’s body and stimulate specific areas in order to do things such as make Bowser strong enough to lift heavy objects, or as time goes on grow giant in order to take on giant enemies in special boss battles. These often involve minigames such as the Mario Bros having to hit balls of energy at muscle with their hammers in order to give Bowser more power. Personally, whilst I get how gross the idea is to some, I’ve always found the concept of characters inside of a living person and having to navigate their way around interesting, granted I prefer it when it’s more cartoon logic than going for the realism of how disgusting that would likely be to experience. It’s due to this, despite often finding cavern type environments fairly dull, I actually really like the locations visited within Bowser and I found it a cool concept to play through. The location is on a 2D plain rather than the 3D environments Bowser travels through in the game, so it makes them unique and often I wouldn’t say they’re particularly confusing. Returning to areas in Bowser’s Body is really simple too as the Mario Bros can just select an area they’ve already visited to return there on the map. The Mario Bros don’t spend the whole game in Bowser’s body, in fact there are pipes they find which allow them to travel back to the overworld, often being able to do things and visit locations Bowser cannot, a key one being Toad Town which features various stores and NPCs to speak with. One final cool thing I’d like to mention regarding the Mario Bros and Bowser is that there are small enemies in the overworld that the Mario Bros have to fight as well as the bigger ones that wander around, however Bowser can often just take out the small ones by walking into them due to his size and power, with only the big ones initiate battles with him. It was in my opinion a nice touch which made each area feel different depending on whether it was Bowser or the Mario Bros you were playing as.
When this game came out, I remember one aspect which I was personally excited about, was that this was the first RPG game since the first Paper Mario to have the Mushroom Kingdom as the setting, with the aforementioned Toad Town being a returning location which specifically first appeared in that game. Partners in Time was also set in the Mushroom Kingdom, however that was specifically the past version of the place, with a lot of it destroyed. One of my major criticisms of that game was how the areas weren’t connected, only being visited by going through specific portals. The Mushroom Kingdom in Bowser’s Inside Story on the other hand has a connected world map. There’s a nice variety of locations although I could see some calling it somewhat bland, still I personally quite enjoyed it, with two of my favourite locations being Toad Town and Bowser’s Castle. Nowadays I realise the Mushroom Kingdom possibly appears too often, but still at the time I was glad to see it, and it still has some interesting unique locations, such as Plack Beach which features odd teeth formations. Bowser’s Castle is a highlight to me also, although thanks to the main villain of the game it’s been remodelled and a lot of Bowser’s minions inside there will attack him on sight due to brainwashing.
Another somewhat unique aspect to this game for Mario RPGs is that the main villain, Fawful is actually a character from the very first Mario & Luigi game, being the lackey of that game’s main antagonist Cackletta. Fawful puts various plans in motion, starting with beginning an outbreak of a disease known as the Blorbs, which causes Toads to swell like balloons becoming immobile balls essentially. His second plan is disguising himself as a merchant and selling Bowser the disguised Vacuum Shroom, which allows him to use Bowser to inhale everyone inside Princess Peach’s castle, trapping them all and simultaneously taking out Bowser due to his exhaustion. Seizing on this opportunity, Fawful takes over Bowser’s Castle, hypnotising his minions and invading the Mushroom Kingdom in order to take over Peach’s now vacant Castle. Fawful’s main goal it turns out is to uncover a power hidden away long ago under the Mushroom Kingdom, known as the Dark Star which Fawful seeks to take for himself. Fawful was a fan favourite from the first Mario & Luigi game, with his speech in the English versions of the game being similar to bad translations from old videogames as well as just odd nonsensical metaphors, with phrases such as “I have fury!” and “This battle shall be the delicious mustard on that bread! The mustard of your doom!” so him returning was good to see, especially as he had a small cameo in the second game Partners in Time, which helps make all three feel connected.
When it comes to the bosses in the game, there’s quite a variety because of the different forms of battles in the game. There are many bosses that are specifically fought by the Mario Bros within Bowser’s body, such as the cell-like Kretin boss, Durmite a wiggler sort of enemy and probably my favourite which is Bowser Memory ML, which are blocky sort of caricatures of Mario and Luigi that seem to be based on how Bowser thinks of the two. Mario & Luigi do fight some bosses outside of Bowser’s body, but only a couple, still probably the coolest to me in this case is Bowser himself. The reason for this, is it happens after you’ve played as and unlocked various abilities for Bowser such as his fire breath, so the fight with him is facing off against all the moves you’ve been using whilst playing as Bowser. Speaking of the prime final boss material himself, Bowser has two different sorts of boss battles. The regular boss battles are just like any other battle Bowser does, although one cool aspect to them is when Bowser unlocks his inhale ability, he can inhale certain enemies or parts of big enemies which then the Mario Bros can fight inside Bowser’s body. This isn’t just a standard Mario Bros battle however as sometimes these enemies have a move which can harm Bowser, such as digging into the er, ‘ground’ on the inside of Bowser’s body that damages him. This ability plays a key role in the final battle, but I’ll get onto that later. Of the other bosses Bowser fights, probably the most notable one is Midbus, a weird sort of pig-armadillo hybrid who ironically plays the second in command role to Fawful that he played to Cackletta in the first game. Midbus is a pretty good foil for Bowser, with him similarly being a big strong brute character, but being a different type to Bowser. Whereas Bowser is a sort of Ox-Turtle King, Midbus is a Boar-Armadillo, where Bowser will retract into his shell for some attacks, Midbus will roll like an Armadillo to attack, where Bowser uses fire breath, Midbus’s final form is ice based. Overall, he provides a good sort of rival character for Bowser to fight seeing as Fawful isn’t really power focused.
The second and far more unique form of boss battles in the game are the giant Bowser battles, where Bowser will take on other giant enemies. These battles are unique as they require the DS (or 3DS) to be played on its side, with the touch screen on the left. The stylus is used on the touch screen in order to initiate attacks, such as sliding the stylus across the screen to perform a punch, or (probably one of my least favourite DS features) blowing into the mic to do a fire attack. The bosses you fight more often than not are vehicles or buildings with the first being Bowser’s own castle and the last being the Fawful controlled Princess Peach’s Castle. I enjoy these battles and they’re not too common so they don’t outstay their welcome, although the train battle where you have to keep knocking down mountains to catch up to the train I feel was probably the one I had the most trouble with. The final battle is not with Fawful, who is one of the penultimate bosses, but with the Dark Star, who takes on a form similar to Bowser, known as Dark Bowser and absorbs the remains of what seems to be Fawful’s spirit. This leads to an epic confrontation between Bowser and Dark Bowser on the roof of Peach’s Castle, with Bowser being the only one left who can directly fight the powerful being. The boss battle is probably one of my favourites in the series, it’s not easy (although nowhere near as hard as others in the series) but has an amazing theme, Dark Bowser has some impressive looking attacks and Bowser’s counter attacks make the whole thing even more spectacular. Dark Bowser is essentially invincible, but the remains of Fawful, that when he’s hit hard enough he’ll cough up can be inhaled by Bowser, providing the actual vulnerable piece of the Dark Star’s lifeforce. When the Mario Bros defeat the Dark Star, Dark Bowser being just an empty shell collapses and is also defeated by Bowser’s final powerful punches. Fawful’s remains, in one last attempt at revenge self-destruct, planning on taking the Mario Bros and Bowser with him, however instead his attempt causes Bowser to expel everyone who is inside him.
Planning on taking over the Mushroom Kingdom himself with the Dark Star gone, seeing the Mario Bros reappear and finding out they were inside him all this time throws the Koopa King into a rage and he fights (and is once again defeated by) the Mario Bros during the credits. Despite this, some time later when Bowser is recovering from his defeat back home, he receives a present, a cake from Princess Peach to thank him for everything he did in stopping the Dark Star. It’s a nice ending and I like how it’s clear Bowser hasn’t necessarily changed but still has his good points to the degree Peach of all people can stand sending him a thank you gift. I want to make special mention of the music in this game, with it being fantastic, the standout track most people know of is the final boss theme with Dark Bowser (which was included in Smash Bros) however there are many other great tunes in the game. The thing with this game, is there’s so many things I feel I could go over that I’ve not gotten to, things such as how Bowser gradually frees different minions that he can summon in battle to help him such as Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Magikoopas etc and going over the various characters that appear in the story such as Broque Monsieur, Starlow, the three minions and many others (many of whom made their first appearances here but would go on to appear a lot more in the series and even in side modes in later remakes of the original games) and just how funny the game is overall, but I feel to list all these things would just go on for far too long, so all I want to say at the end of the day, is this is a fantastic game, and definitely deserves its reputation as one of if not the best of the Mario & Luigi series (maybe even one of the best Mario RPGs overall).
Specific aspects about the game relating to Bowser in Smash.
So, this game does have equipment, although none of it changes Bowser’s appearance, still as always with these things, I like to pick out equipment in the game that I feel fits closest to what might be a ‘canon’ setup for Bowser. For this game, I went with the King Shell, (he is the Koopa King afterall) Power Band+ and Intruder Fangs (which allows Bowser to perform two actions consecutively per turn). Two of these have some fairly steep requirements, with the Fangs requiring you to reach ‘Final Boss Rank (level 40)’ and the King Shell requiring you to get all A Ranks at Broque Madame’s challenges, however to me they’re the most fitting equipment for Bowser. Bowser’s not really known for wearing rings so I didn’t have any specific choice for this when it comes down to it. When it comes to moves, Bowser’s basic punch is similar to some of his attacks in Super Smash Bros, and his fire breath is obvious. One of the other overworld abilities is a body slam, which doesn’t have an exact equivalent in Smash Bros, but involves Bowser jumping, going into his shell and slamming down on the ground, with many moves in Smash involving Bowser retracting into his shell (and his down arial does involve him doing a ground pound in his shell, but with the spikes going down rather than his body slamming into the ground.) In battle, Bowser’s counter-attacks involve either punching or him leaning down so attacks from above land on his spiky shell, which interestingly is similar in my opinion to Bowser’s up-smash with him using the spikes on his shell to hit foes above him.  Finally, regarding Bowser’s final smash, Giga Bowser is unique to Super Smash Bros, however Bowser growing giant is something that’s happened many times in the series. Bowser does grow giant in this game, but later down the line I have another game on my list specifically regarding giant Bowser.

The screenshots in this post are taken by me from gameplay videos on youtube by other people a few years ago. I was hoping for a release on the Wii U virtual console to replace them, but sadly that never happened so this is all I have of Bowser in the game. If someone recognises these screenshots from their video specifically and can provide me a link to the original I will give credit.

Part 2
Super Mario Disaster Master Page
──────────────────────────
- Mario Bombs Away
Mario Sr.’s wartime adventures before he enters the Mushroom World.
Mario Sr. immigrated to the US from Italy as a young adult, where he lived a normal life as a workman. I’m not sure if he was drafted or if he volunteered, but he ended up as a soldier about midway through the Vietnam War. He picked up the skills to navigate the Mushroom World there, from his experiences with jungle warfare.
(I don’t plan to write this, but it provides valuable background information.)
- Donkey Kong
Later in life, Mario Sr. stumbles into the Mushroom World, where he meets his future wife (who doesn’t have a name yet).
DK (a young Cranky Kong) saved her from an arranged marriage and a horrible political situation. However, she doesn’t know that was DK’s intention and neither does Mario. Mario happens to spot them and chases the two around for a while until the misunderstanding clears up. They leave DK on good terms and Mario escorts her to the Mushroom Kingdom (the closest group of humans not caught up in her homeland’s mess) to seek asylum, and Peach’s family welcomes them warmly.
She adores Mario, and eventually they get married.
(Mario Sr. and his wife end up playing a significant role in the Mushroom Kingdom after their arrival. The bro's mom is a powerful star sage, and becomes something of a mentor for Peach’s mother. Peach’s dad takes Mario Sr. on as a sort of bodyguard, and they become fast friends.)
- Yoshi Island
Some years later, Mario Sr. and his wife have twins. Things go well for a while, but when the boys are around two, word gets out about some particularly potent prophecies concerning them. Bowser’s dad sends Kamek to kidnap the boys; he gets Luigi but loses Mario along the way.
Mario Sr. attempts to get them back, but sustains a serious injury in the process. He walks with a cane for the rest of his life. The Yoshis save the day and everything turns out alright, but Mario Sr. no longer feels capable of protecting his kids. He moves his family back to the US—to his old home in Brooklyn.
(Between the kidnapping and his time in Darkland, Luigi develops some childhood trauma from this incident. This plays a big role in his young life.)
(Despite these events, Mario Sr. doesn’t leave the mushroom world until the boys are about five. Not long after Yoshi’s Island, Bowser’s father dies at the hands of Cackletta, making Mario Sr. think the boys are safe. But yet another incident occurs a year or two later. I don’t know the details—it’s a stand-in for Partners in Time, but I know it doesn’t play out the same way. This is the last straw and Mario Sr. moves his family to Brooklyn.)
(I’m pretty sure Peach’s dad and Mario Sr. have a falling out as well, over the Surassaland-backed pilfering of Darkland after King Koopa’s death. Mario Sr.’s injuries save him from having to get involved, but I don't think the concept sits well with him. It caused a rift between them—nothing nasty, but enough to prevent any burning desire to return to the Mushroom World soon.)
- “Origins”
The bro’s mom dies in an accident when they’re 15 or 16, removing any lingering desire Mario Sr. has to return to the Mushroom Kingdom. He lives the remainder of his life with his boys, running “Mario and Sons Plumbing” and eventually dies of a stroke. The boys are probably 22.
Origins is several of the side-scrolling games wedged into one.
When the bros go through their parent’s possessions after their father’s death, Mario finds the portal painting their parents kept to get back to the mushroom world (the same deal as the paintings in Mario 64). He jumps through and mucks about for a while, exploring the world and having the strangest sense of dejavu. He winds up in the right place at the right time to save Princess Peach from Bowser. When Mario escorts her back to her castle, Toadsworth recognizes him immediately, because of how much Mario looks like his father. Toadsworth doesn’t say anything, but he encourages Mario’s visits and makes him feel special and welcome. Mario makes a habit of showing up after that, and starts building a reputation for heroics.
(Peach’s parents both died not long after Mario Sr. left. I don’t know the details yet, but I’m pretty sure it was a case of “what goes around comes around.” This left Peach in the care of Toadsworth, who she basically considers her dad now. Despite the sudden loss of the king and queen, with the help of Sarasaland Toadsworth managed to retain most of the Mushroom Kingdom's land and resources, including the territory stolen from a young Prince Bowser.)
- Super Mario Land
Mario and Peach have become good friends by this point. When Peach gets word that her childhood friend Daisy needs help, she goes to Mario, sending him on a wild adventure into the heart of Surassaland. He meets Daisy’s family in this story, and though they keep their feelings veiled, they instantly consider him a threat and a rival for Peach’s hand (despite their falling out with Peach, they still hope she will get over her issues with them and marry Prince Haru, Daisy’s big brother). This incident foreshadows some of the political issues that come into play later in the timeline.
- RPG
Mario is pretty well known across the Mushroom Kingdom, Darkland, and Surassalnd by now. He visits the mushroom world more frequently and stays for longer (leaving Luigi very concerned, but more on that later). Then Smithy shows up, sweeping Mario into one of his biggest adventures yet.
Through this situation, Mario meets Geno, who talks about some of the prophecies that mention the bros. He also introduces Mario to the concept of “star chosen” and “sages.” He heavily implies that the bro’s mother was a very powerful figure in the mushroom world. I don’t know how much of this Mairo swallows, probably not a lot, but it opens the door to that sort of thinking. It also prompts him to talk to Toadsworth, who confirms that Mario Sr. had lived in the mushroom world and met the bro’s mother there.
- Mario Bros
Things stay quiet for a while after RPG. Bowser keeps himself busy rebuilding his castle, and generally being conflicted after fighting alongside Mario and Peach. But when he finally does go after Peach again and Mario stomps him as usual, all his hard feelings come rolling back.
In the meantime, Luigi is becoming seriously concerned. Mario hardly helps with the business anymore—he’s hardly around at all. When he does come back, he brings all sorts of money with him, and more than once he’s been busted up. Luigi's starting to think Mario has gotten tangled into a gang or something.
That is, until Mario takes home a power star and tucks it under the floorboard.
Geno told Mario about the star chosen—told him that only the chosen can hear the glittering sound that stars make. With Bowser obviously growing desperate, Mario tucks a star away in his secret stash just in case, assuming Luigi won’t be able to hear it.
Luigi spends all day looking for whatever’s making that infernal ringing sound, and when he finds it, the star won’t stop following him and flying around his head. When Mario comes back to find a very disgruntled Luigi with questions.
Reluctantly, Mario starts to explain. Luigi is incredulous, that is, until a hoard of massive turtles come flooding after Mario from the sewers.
- Mario 64
When Mario and Luigi become cornered in the apartment above their shop, Mario drags Luigi through the painting. They sprint for the castle to warn Peach, only to find Bowser waiting for them. The situation ends badly.
Luckily, Yoshi manages to free Mario so he can save the day, but it’s a rough first introduction to the mushroom world for Luigi. But once he’s free, he does help Mario gather stars, and as the adventure goes on Luigi gets the same feeling of dejavu for the world that Mario did.
(After 64, utterly exhausted and their home in Brooklyn destroyed, Mario and Luigi accept Toadswroth’s offer to stay at the castle for a while. Mario explains to Luigi in detail his adventures in the mushroom world, and with both brothers finally present, Toadsworth explains the full story of their parents as well. Luigi can’t disbelieve it—not anymore. He can also see that Mario is very taken with the princess.
At the end of their stay, Luigi offers to relocate to the Mushroom Kingdom for good, moving what’s left of the family plumbing business with him.)
Keep in mind that this is an ongoing project, so the timeline may change to suit the story’s needs.
This timeline also CONTAINS SPOILERS as it shares a brief breakdown of all the Super Mario stories I intend to write.
