Sengoku Babysitting
I used a wheel to determine which guys I'd write for~
Tumblr media
Intro:
"So…Why do you have a stranger's kid?…" (Y/n)'s lover stared blankly at her; a singular eyebrow quirked as he watched how she cradled a sleeping child to her chest. "One of my friends amongst the seamstresses is having to babysit her nephew because her sister is ill, since I've already finished all my commissions I offered to watch him for her." She giggled, gently brushing her fingers over the child's chubby cheeks. Her lover seemed skeptical about toting a kid around the castle, but because of how much fun she seemed to be having he had been willing to just let it happen.

Shingen
The large male chuckled from where he sat next to (Y/n), sipping his tea as he watched his lover settle the baby in her lap so that he was sitting up with his back against her torso. She was currently entertaining the baby with a puppet his aunt had brought from home for him, she was so focused on the giggling baby that she hadn't noticed Shingen's loving stare. At first, he wasn't sure about having an infant in the castle, but (Y/n) had handled every moment like a champ. Even the infant's cries hadn't been enough to frazzle her, instead she went about soothing him with a smile. The scene was enough to make him think, he had been with (Y/n) for some time now and since they were officially married the next logical step was a family. It wasn't something he had put much thought into previously, but seeing his wife playing with and taking care of this baby was enough to have him confronting himself over his own thoughts and feelings of the future. Shingen didn't come out of these thoughts until (Y/n) moved to sit beside him, the little baby giggling happily as its tiny hand grabbed hold of his sleeve. With a warm smile and large gentle hands, Shingen lifted the baby up to his level. "Not even 3 years old and you're a lady killer, what are you parents gonna do with you?" The baby giggled loudly as Shingen gently bounced him up and down, (Y/n) taking the moment of freedom to snag a skewer of mochi and begin digging into her own snack. "He really is adorable; his parents must have amazing genetics." (Y/n) giggled, watching her husband play with the baby boy was she ate her snack. She couldn't help but focus on her lover's grinning face, she took a good hard look at his features as she did her best to imagine him as a baby. She'd be lying if she claimed to have never thought about having a family with him, many early mornings were spent getting ready together and wondering how things would change when they had a child of their own. She couldn't help but gaze at the love of her life, wondering what he had looked like as a baby. Given how big Shingen was, she was confident he was the chubbiest of babies. A thought that made her cheeks flush as she smiled, the thought of having a chubby baby just made her happy.
Of course, Shingen had similar thoughts, especially when they walked through the Castel town and the children would recognize his goddess. The way they get so excited, wanting nothing more than to play and talk with the woman he loved. Sometimes he found himself daydreaming, wondering when the day would come that he'd be looking up from his desk to find his dear wife nurse the fruit of their labors. He's already worked out a few designs for some baby furniture, wanting to make it himself so he knew it was made right. He and his wife had discussed the baby furniture of the future before, the things she described gave him a lot of inspiration. "He's quite small, I was almost afraid to hold him at first." Shingen chuckled, resting the little boy on his leg and gently bouncing him. The large man couldn't help but chuckle as the little boy squealed happily, tiny hands gripping Shingen's sleeves as he bounced comfortably. "i know, it's been so long since I last babysat. When I first saw him, I was almost surprised he wasn't smaller, I forget sometimes they aren't as small as dolls." She giggled, reaching over to gently brush her hand against the thin layer of hair on the little boy's head affectionately. "Perhaps it's my height, but all babies seem absolutely tiny to me." Shingen chuckled, watching her give the boy some affection as she ate. "Probably, you are bigger than most other grown men so I can only imagine how little he must look to you." She giggled, putting down her skewer as she moved closer to Shingen and leaned into his side. She wrapped her arms around one of his, her head resting on his shoulder as she closed her eyes with a soft smile. Shingen could only chuckle, the little boy leaning back against his chest as he seemed to finally tucker himself out. "Now that's a good idea…" Shingen's low voice rumbled in his chest as he spoke softly, gently shifting the little boy to rest in his arm. "Since you finished your snack, why not come here and join me for a nap. The weather is wonderful." Shingen opened his arm, leaning back against the wall as his dear wife smiled at him and shook her head in mock-shame. "I suppose a nap won't hurt." She moved closer to him, slipping under his arm now and snuggled into him as she rested her head on his chest. Shingen had the boy cradled on his lap, leaning against his torso comfortably. It didn't take long for (Y/n) to sleep, Shingen had stayed awake a bit longer though. He wanted to enjoy the sight of holding his lover like this, looking down on the boy and that was how he KNEW it was about damn time he spoke to his wife about starting their family.

Kanetsugu
Kanetsugu stood speaking before a crowd of other vassals, it was a pretty standard meeting so why were these men staring at the man of the house? Because sat on his hip as he spoke was a 3-year-old girl, she was awake but quite content with the gentle bouncing and the sound of Kanetsugu's voice. His wife had to run into town to buy some stuff, so he had offered to watch the little girl since he had nothing to do after this meeting was over with. The little girl had been absolutely smitten with Kanetsugu, lighting up every time she saw him in a way similar to how his wife seemed to brighten whenever he'd come home at the end of the day. It made Kanetsugu chuckle whenever he saw it, this little girl reminded him of both his wife and his younger siblings. He took great part in raising his siblings, he remembered when they were all little like this and those memories were quite dear to him. At the end of the meeting Kanetsugu made his way to the kitchen, paying no mind to the odd stares he got and the whispers that followed him down the hall. He wanted to get the little girl a snack, so he planned to fix her some peaches since they were soft and easy to eat. On his way there he noticed his lover on her way down the hall. She was coming from the direction of their room, meaning she had dropped off her shopping. The young woman's face lit up; he couldn't help but give a slight smile at how she rushed up to him with her own wide grin. "I take it the meeting is over? Thanks for watching her while I ran into town." (y/n) smiled, reaching out to playfully poke the little girl's side and listen to her giggle. They exchanged the little girl, who had smuggled into (Y/n)'s chest. No doubt the woman was a bit more comfortable to lay on, for obvious reasons. "I was on my way to the kitchen to get her a snack, so it's perfect timing on your part. It'll be easier than cutting a peach one handed." He gently took her hand, since getting married, he had begun doing this any time they were together. She was his wife, something he was proud of and more than willing to display. "Food sounds good, lunch should be coming round soon. So hopefully she'll be done eating before then and we can eat without too much trouble." (Y/n) smiled up at Kanetsugu, the little girl resting on her arm and curled against her chest. She was sucking on her thumb, content with the steady sway of the woman's walk cycle.
"Maybe if we're lucky we can put her down for a nap after her snack, she hasn't had one today yet so it's about that time anyways." Kanetsugu lead his lover to the kitchen, his free hand running through his own hair as he found his gaze wandering away from the sky as he took in the sight of his lover with her friend's baby. It was such a domestic sight, something that made an odd feeling stir in him. He had never actually thought about it in depth, he knew he wanted a family, but he had never put a whole lot of thought into it. But confronted with the glimpse before him, it was like something was stirring awake. He no longer just wanted a family with her, he needed one. The thought of having evidence of their love made his heart speed up, a sort of primal shift growing inside of him at the thought of her having his child. It wasn't just animalistic desire though; his protective instinct was starting to twitch awake. To have a family with his wife, that would truly be his peace. It was like a new goal came into focus; one he couldn't wait to discuss with her later once the little girl had gone home with her mother for the night. So, for now he had to settle for gently squeezing her hand, giving her a fond gaze as he watched her talk about her experience at the market. When her gaze suddenly caught his, he leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to her lips. Leaving her flustered as he released her hand and stepped through the threshold and into the kitchen. She stood at the doorway, watching him with curiosity as she failed to fight the love-struck smile that crossed her face when watching the man, she loved prepare food for the little girl in their care.

Motonari
Motonari watched his wife with a grumpy pout, on her lap was a 4-year-old that had proven to be the bane of this man's existence. This little boy would not accept anyone but her, and God forbid Motonari be allowed to hug or touch his wife. The boy didn't throw a hissy fit, oh no, worse yet the little boy would hold his palm out to Motonari with a firm but docile "No." With the most expressionless stare Motonari has seen in his life, he hadn't been able to so much as hug his wife with this little boy around. The kid refused to be held by anyone else, he was always giving Motonari such a blank faced stare and it never failed to make the man laugh out of mild frustration. The more he thought about it, the more ridiculous he felt. He was competing with a kid for his wife, and it wasn't even his kid. At the end of the day, this kid goes home with someone else, so there is NO competition. Each time Motonari reminded himself of this, rolling his eyes at the jealous side that was near desperate to hold her hand. Though there was some odd part of him that was satisfied with watching his wife interact with this little boy, even when he was fussy, she was calm as can be when handling him. Plus, there was the pride he took in having a wife so loved by so many people, she was the prize jewel out of all his treasures. Currently the two were waiting for the little boy's aunt, (Y/n)'s friend, to come and pick up the little boy for the night. The sun was an hour or two from setting, and he was doing his best to be patient as he had a staring contest with the little boy. At least until the child reached out to him, making a grabby motion that had (Y/n) lighting up. "Aw, he wants you to hold him!" She was excited, moving closer to Motonari, who for just a moment was panicking, he did not have a plan for this particular option. So he had let his wife lead him into holding the little boy on his lap, the boy sat with his back to Motonari's chest. His little head was leaned back on Motonari's collarbone, he still had one hand holding onto (Y/n)'s finger so she had to sit against Motonari's side. Seizing his chance, he slid his free arm around her waist as his other was draped over the boy's stomach to keep him steady.
"I guess you respecting his boundaries earned his trust, that's so sweet." She smiled brightly, nuzzling Motonari's shoulder in a way that never ceased to make him melt inside. This was a situation he had never imagined in his life, the male having never actually thought about having kids of his own. Sure, he knew kids existed, but he never thought about HIS kids existing. This whole situation felt so surreal, looking down at his lover and this child no longer felt real. All of a sudden it felt dreamlike, as if he was discovering something for the first time. A wide array of emotions overwhelmed him, from a strange anxiety to what could only be described as an intense contentment. He had come a long way from the person he was when he and his wife first met, but even still to have such a large discovery out of nowhere was almost startling. He hadn't felt like this since he first realized he truly loved his wife; it was a feeling that could be described with the word emotion. It was so much at once, and yet he felt calm in an odd way. His face was flaming, silently staring at his lover as he processed everything. Of course she had noticed his stare, she had trying speaking to him, but he never responded and now she was simply flustered by the look he was giving her. It was almost innocent, the flustered look mixed with confusion and surprise. Leaning forward she placed a gentle kiss to the tip of his nose, suddenly bursting the bubble he had previously been absorbed in. It took every ounce of self-control in him not to jump, he had already embarrassed himself enough today. The hand that had been around her waist came up, pulling her close and tucking her head into the crook of his neck as he tried to hide his flustered state. These new realizations had him feeling energized in an odd way, he simply had to have her close right now. He knew the look on his face was probably quite out of character for him, and he was embarrassed to admit how little control he actually had over his current behavior. He wanted to hide his emotional state, and what better way to do that then basking in the affection and the touch of his wife that he had wanted all day. Once the boy was returned, he planned to spend the rest of the day and night with his wife in their room. He wanted only her presence, only her voice and scent. Only her.

Masamune
(Y/n) currently sat at a banquet between her boss Nobunaga and her lover Masamune, across from her was Mitsuhide and Hideyoshi. Meanwhile in her lap was a 1-one-year old little girl, the niece of a friend that was taking care of her sister until the woman's husband got home from work. Because of that (Y/n) had brought the baby to the banquet, it was fairly late, and the baby was full from where (Y/n) had taken the baby home long enough to eat and give the mom a chance to see her. The little girl had been quite content after eating, and so now she was happily babbling away at Keiji while Masamune fed his wife a bit of rice. "I shouldn't be surprised you volunteered for such a task; you always do manage to find the most amusing situations." Mitsuhide chuckled from across the woman, drinking some sake and letting a servant refill it. "She was a little fussy at first, but once she got comfortable with us it got a bit easier. Her aunt should be back to get her soon. She's just waiting for the woman's husband to come home to take care of his wife." Masamune chuckled, sitting close to his lover's side as he'd raise bites for her to take and fed her her meal before he had even touched his. He had spent most the day doing paperwork, which left (Y/n) to bear the brunt of the child's care. He wanted to give her a small break and help out now that he wasn't busy, plus he had been wanting to give her some love all day. She was just too cute, playing with and fawning over the baby girl currently in her arms. Looking at the little girl he could admit she was cute, but he just knew their baby would be even cuter. If he had a little girl that looked just like his wife, he'd be over the moon. In truth he wanted a larger family, something he and his lover had discussed many times. They want quite a few children; they hadn't really been trying for kids as of late but also hadn't been avoiding it either. But today made him feel it was time, seeing the way she cared for the little girl, even when she screamed and cried, had reaffirmed in him that they could do this, and it was about time to take the first steps officially.
Once his wife had finished her food he had set the chopsticks down, using one hand to hold one of her own as the other brought his cup of tea up to his lips so he could take a sip. "It seems so natural; I was worried you'd struggle with her when I first saw you in the halls this morning. But you seem to have everything under control." Hideyoshi smiled, taking a bite of some roasted vegetables while observing the baby girl in his friend's lap. Despite all the noise she almost seemed ready to fall asleep, the group laughing at how her tiny head bobbed before she finally gave up and completely rested across the woman's lap as her haori functioned as a makeshift cover. "I won't lie it was hard to be calm sometimes, but I eventually found a good rhythm for cycling through what she wanted or needed until I could find what I needed. Then it just kinda got easier to tell what she was wanting, plus after visiting her mom to drink her fill she's been quite content and a lot less fussy." (Y/n) giggled, gently rubbing the baby's stomach with her free hand. She watched the baby sleep with a fond gaze, her mind wandering to places that her observant friends could easily predict. For Nobunaga, Mitsuhide, and Hideyoshi; it was the same look Masamune got any time they noticed him watching her interact with the little girl. Oh yes, they knew it was only a matter of time before they had children running about the castle whenever the pair would come to visit from Aoba. "Well, at least you'll have practice for when you and Lord Masamune have a child. It'll be quite the sight to see." Mitsunari spoke openly with a fond smile on his face, and as flustered as it made her, (Y/n) couldn't fight the smile she felt forming on her face. She'd be lying if she said taking care of the little girl made her wonder how things would be when they DID have their own child, she'd love to have a little boy that looked just like her husband. Though she had known for a while she wants more than one child, as aware as she is of what childbirth is like in this era she wouldn't miss the chance to have the family she desires with the man she loves. "You guys will be the first we tell when I fall pregnant, I promise Mitsunari." She giggled some, at least until she felt Masamune's arm wrap around her waist. "It'll be more than that, we'll be staying here during your pregnancy that way I can be sure of your safety. Plus, Ieyasu will be a boon to have on standby." The blonde let out an indignant snort but said nothing back. The fussy blonde being surprisingly quiet about Masamune's desire to have him care for Hime in such a state, and none of the other warlords seemed bothered at the idea of a pregnant woman waddling around the castle. Something that both embarrassed (Y/n) and made her feel overjoyed, as she knew she had everyone's support when it came time for this new step in her life.

Kenshin
Everyone stared intently at the trio during a war council, sitting in his usual place was Kenshin. And as per usual, he was the one making a scene. In his lap sat his wife, odd but not entirely unexpected. And then on her lap was a little boy, a 4-year-old she had volunteered to watch during the day for her friend who was caring for an ill family member. The group had been stuck at the hip since the little boy's arrival, though at first Kenshin had been a little jealous and that had been why he was being more openly affectionate than usual. But it was less than 2 hours before his reasoning shifted, some part of him deeply enjoyed watching his wife happily interact with the child. He had thought about having a family with her for many years, even before they had married. Though he had yet to put his desires into words, he didn't want to pressure her and had originally decided he'd just wait for her to approach him when she was ready. But now, while Kanetsugu went over his report for his recent observation mission, Kenshin wanted nothing more than a way to bring up his desires without pressuring his love. Starting a family was a big deal after all, he didn't want her to force herself into something she isn't ready for just to try and please him. Kenshin was staring off into the distance, his chin resting on the top of his lover's head while the little boy in her lap played with a stuffed animal. His vassals watched, absolutely astonished. Even Shingen was quite intrigued with his friend's behavior, meanwhile Kanetsugu could feel his eye twitching as he figured out long ago his Lord was barely listening, and they'd probably have to talk about this again later. Of course (Y/n) wasn't dumb, she could tell what everyone was thinking, and she did kind of feel bad for Kanetsugu. Before Kanetsugu left for his mission Kenshin had the Fearsome God of war, when he returned however he was Kenshin Lord of the bunnies. Sure, he still went to war, but he had changed in many ways. Kanetsugu could recognize the good, but he often found himself surprised at how (Y/n) brought out a childlike behavior in Kenshin.
Sometimes it made Kanetsugu want to laugh, but when his Lord is just blank face no thought staring at him in the middle of a war council, he wanted to throw something. Not that he actually would. He tried to soothe himself by observing his Lord's situation while he spoke, knowing that at least Shingen, Yukimura and Sasuke were listening. From the outside, you'd almost think they were a family. A thought that did calm the white-haired male's irritation, his Lord seemed so content. Kenshin was always quite happy when he had (Y/n) in his lap, but the addition of the child seemed to bring something out of the male. Kanetsugu didn't miss how his lord had gently pulled his wife closer, the blonde man's hand occasionally coming up to pet the little boy on the head absent mindedly. It only further reassured Kanetsugu's expectation that this is likely going to be the future, he wasn't quite sure how he was gonna handle this, but he was sure it was going to involve late night drinks with a recap of the war council. By the time Kanetsugu had come to this conclusion he had finished his explanation of the survey he had been sent on, and as he stepped back to return to his previous seat Kenshin seemed to realize that everything was over. On the outside Kenshin seemed somewhat normal, but Kanetsugu could see the slight surprise in his lord's features upon realizing he had missed the entire council. "I see, I do have a few questions, but we can discuss those later. Is there anything else that needs to be discussed?" Kenshin gazed around the room, wanting to make sure there wasn't anything left to discuss before he dismissed the meeting. When it was concluded that there was nothing else to talk about, Kenshin released everyone to go back to their daily duties. "It's almost time for lunch Kenshin, did you want to go out to eat? The weather has been nice the past few days." (Y/n) smiled, leaning back so that she rested against his chest. Her head leaned back against his shoulder, and she pressed a kiss to his cheek with a warm smile. After the door had been closed and everyone left, she let the little boy up so that he could explore the room a bit. Where the two adults sat, they could see every corner of the room and could easily monitor him. "Sure, we can make a date of it. The little one won't notice, and we can stop by a tea house for dessert after if you want." Though Kenshin didn't really like sweets, he still enjoyed the tea house atmosphere while he watched her enjoy her desserts. "You know me too well." She giggled, pressing another kiss to his cheek as they spent a few quiet moments in each other's arms. Watching over the little boy in front of them, both having only the thought of discussing family with each other at the end of the night.

Witch of Penchant
Prologue: Part 2/4
Shingen x MC (Mai)
Previous
Logline - A women in nuns clothes, with an unsettling resemblance to a fox, the witch of Honno-ji, has traveled back in time to an era she has already lived through. She accidentally saved the life of Nobunaga Oda, but now she wonders how else the past has changed.
2330 words
A tall (Big, Giant, full head Taller than the one she held hands with) man in a brown haori and dull red kimono, with a massive sword bound in red, looked to them, “What’s this Yuki? We’ve been here ten minutes and you’ve already found yourself a woman?” He grinned as he approached ‘Yuki’ at the edge of the unforested path.
“Don’t tease me, Shingen-sama. She was about to dive off the cliff.” ‘Yuki’ responded, pushing Mai into the clearing.
Mai stumbled, “I knew where I was going much better than you bumbling fool.“
“Yeah? At night in the woods, you mean? What for?” ‘Yuki’ asked.
Mai sighed, “I was looking for a shortcut to my happy place…” (my cave, I just want to be in my cave!)
‘Shingen’ looked at her, “Hmm… Smoke from Honno-ji and a woman all alone at night. Perhaps you’re a ghost? Though you’re the most beautiful ghost I’ve ever seen.”
“Thanks,” Mai pulled a vine from her leg, ”A ghost would be an accurate description for me.”
A flash of white appeared then quickly vanished from view. The shrubbery rustled as animals made their way to safety from the smoke muddying the air. If one listened closely, some creature wasn’t fleeing, but circling the clearing, the sound then suddenly plummeted into the forest. Mai Scanned the edge of the clearing where the sound disappeared.
There! A path! Darting out from between the tents, she rushed to the footpath.
“Mizusaki-san! Mizusa—–-” Toyotomi-san and Akechi-san called after her. Walking along the path until the camp fell from view, and the noise of bustling soldiers faded, Mai searched for the white flash of fur (Searched—searched is the wrong word;) once certain of her solitude, Mai stood in the path, waiting. A fox appeared. White, with a striking grey mask, and a black cowl. The fox stood on its hind legs, it was unusually large, coming up to Mai’s chest.
It held out a torch to the witch, “You and the rift are safe, I assume?”
“Yes? Why do you have a torch?” Mai grabbed the torch.
“Have you seen the fire?”
“I was in the fire.” Mai held the
“How unfortunate for you.”
“Bearsace, What did you do?” Mai gestured back at the temple to her fox familiar.
Bearsace sneered at the witch, “There was an army surrounding the temple, they were coming for people in the temple. What's more urgent, a fire or a girl with her fox?”
“Fine, fine. Head to the cave.” Mai said, continuing to walk along the path. “I will catch up to you later, I am going to search the area.”
“So brave of you. When you get to the cave, we will have to hide until the army departs.” Bearsace said before once again fading into the wood.
Just then, the soft chiming of bells and dry leaves being crushed under someone’s foot could be heard.
“Ojou-san, what are you doing in the woods this late at night?” said a weathered looking man with a chiseled looking face, smiling as he walked towards the woman—a fact made more intimidating by the scar slashing across his face. Was he a Buddhist monk from Honno-ji? The man in yellow and purple robes did not bring to mind any monks Mai knew from Honno-ji the first time it burned. His shakujo, a prayer staff with rings, shook with every step.
The Monk said, “I am called Kennyo and I am a traveling monk. Perhaps I can be of assistance to you?”
Mai’s attention flitted to him, "A kind offer, but I know these woods quite well.” Rings, RINGS! He fits the silhouette of the man I saw attack Oda-sama. Mai’s eyes narrowed as he took a long stride towards her only to put a hand softly on my shoulder.
Kennyo, squeezing her shoulder, said, “You should return home quickly; demons lurk in the woods at night.” His eyes - they were so strange and I chilled, his smile seemed friendly but cruel.
Mai responded, “No worries, I am going that way,” He smelled of soot. She wrinkled her nose before melting into the brush like she was made for the shadows.
Mai raced through the woods. Her path was as familiar as a fondly remembered dream, but she was as sure footed as she was fast. Quickly the sound of the windy cliff face reached her ears. So close to her second home. So close to the fox, she so recently could only speak in alleyways under the cover of dark. Then…
SLAM! “Watch it!”
Out of nowhere, a man grabbed her by the arm, yanking her backward. “Whoa!” She fell backwards onto the man, sending them both to the ground.
“Ouch!”
“Sorry!” A well built man with a handsome face was lying below like an unhappy cushion. Mai scooted off, kneeling at his side.
The man, dressed in red, looked startled, “Whoa, are you crazy? Don’t move!”
As she stood up, he did too, grabbing her from behind and pulling her against him. Wind came from a great depth and tugged at her hair. The cliff stretched downward as the endless sky overhead sparkled with the stars.
The man in red smiled in relief, “That was close.”
Mai stared into the vast night, stars were so much brighter here and now, she sighed out a “Gratefully, and what are you doing so close to a cliff?” She turned in his arms, the question was blunt as her gaze mere inches from his face.
The man’s face turned almost as red as his haori, “Uh…”
“Um?” Mai said.
The man in red began to reel back, away from the cliff “I don’t need thanks. Just give me some space, would you!”
“Right!,” Mai said, she would have continued to the cliff, but the man caught her arm once more.
“Not that way.” He pleaded with her.
“I’m just giving you some space.”
The man pulled closer to her, stabilizing on a young tree, “Well watch it. that rock is loose. Can’t you see that for yourself?”
Down the cliff is the quickest way to bearsace, Mai scoffed, knowing the route well, even if the path wasn’t clear to mortal eyes. “Look I understand your concern, alright? But I’m perfectly sure footed here.” She kicked the rock, it pinged off the rocks and tumbled down below. She took his hand before pushing through the brush to walk a narrow path between the drop and trees.
“Hey!,” the man let himself be pulled along, “I’m not mad at you, okay?“ He was smiling now, their hands interlocked.
"Good” Mai smirked at the awkward man. He was quite boyish in attitude as they walked together. They came upon a wider stretch of clearing with several people gathered.
The second person in the clearing made themself known, “Your ability to spew cheap pick up lines never ceases to amaze me.”
Shingen laughed, “I just call it like I see it, Uesugi.”
(Shingen and Uesugi. Weren’t they rivals?)
A masked man appeared beside Uesugi, “My lords, I have returned. Oda’s forces have extinguished the fires at Honno-ji.”
He seemed to have come through the surrounding thickets. Strangely his footsteps didn’t make a sound. (Dressed for camouflage and ease of movement with a close fitting layer that won’t rustle. It's been so long since I've been in a world with shinobi.)
“Thank you for your investigation, Sasuke. So, I presume Oda is still alive then?” Uesugi asked.
Sasuke answered solemnly, “Yes.”
(They are not exactly celebrating that fact are they?)
Shingen responded grimly, “He’s got the devil’s luck.”
“Or he’s the devil.” Yuki added.
The group gathered closer, their tones were hush and serious. It was clear that they don’t like Nobunaga, but they do take him seriously. Suddenly, the shinobi looked at Mai.
“You - ”
"Me?“
Uesugi looked over, “Yuki brought her. Do you know this woman?”
Sasuke blinked, no other emotions were readable on his face, “No. I was mistaken. Though I spotted a village on the way here. She must be from there. I’ll escort her home.”
“Moving quick aren’t you, Sasuke-kun?” Shingen moved towards Mai, ”Give the rest of us a chance, will you?”
Sasuke had already started encouraging her towards a break in the thicket, “Takeda-sama, please. You and the others should return to the city.“ Excusing himself, the shinobi took her hand as the two disappeared into the woods.
"Hold on, you’ve got it wrong. I’m not from a village or anywhere near here, I was going to hide in my cave for the time being- ”
Sasuke stopped to lean against a fallen tree, “I know. I’ve been expecting you. Wait, Cave?”
(What does he mean by that?)(What does she mean by that?)
(He’s been expecting me?) “Wait, wait,” He turned, ensuring they were deep enough in the dark woods. The shinobi then lowered his mask, “Do you recognize me now?”
“Uh, oh hey! You’re the med-school student at the Honno-ji monument!” Mai saw the resemblance to the med school student in green with the watch! The cloud burst, the lightning bolt, the shattering stone…  His watch, lab coat, and green shirt were gone, replaced by his shinobi attire.
Sasuke pulled a microfiber cloth from his person, cleaning his glasses absentmindedly, “Post graduate in physics not medicine. But I’m glad you remember me. That makes things easier. “
“I’m so glad I found you” Mai sat beside him, relieved,”…Why are you a shinobi?” Relief–gone.
“It’s easiest if I start from the beginning.” Sasuke put his glasses on, “I go by Sasuke Sarutobi and just like you I come from the present, or the future, rather.”
Sasuke slowly began to explain what had happened since the encounter at the stone monument.
“So your explanation,” Mai stumbled through the complicated physics, “is that lightning strikes cause spacetime to warp around us and sent us into the past?” It was… close to the rifts reality.
Sasuke responded, “Yes, that is a very simplified and condensed version of my theory. We entered the wormhole at the same time. However, I arrived four years prior to you. In that time I’ve learned that this Sengoku period, Japan’s civil war is different than the one we’re familiar with.”
Mai carefully listened to Sarutobi-san’s explanation. According to him—just like what had happened to Nobunaga and Mai, Sarutobi-san had arrived at the date of Uesugi Kenshin’s historical death. But Sarutobi-san’s quick thinking and knowledge of modern medicine had ensured Uesugi-sama’s survival.
Now he—like Oda-sama—was alive but they weren’t the only ones. Takeda Shingen (the tall flirt) on the cliffs was supposed to have died by this time too. In this strange place and time, he too was alive when he shouldn’t be.
What would Mai tell Bearsace, that she hadn’t protected the rift? That she might not be the witch he knew a day ago? Where was her present (past self)? “I can’t believe it. What am I going to do? What’s happening next?”
Sasuke didn’t seem to react to Mai panicking other than stroking her back, “To a degree. We’re in an alternate Sengoku period, not the one we know from school. Because of fluctuations in spacetime we’re in a divergent time - one in which history will take a different course.”
Mai slumped further. (He knows about the rifts, he knows about the rifts, he knows about the rifts, he knows far too much about the rifts!!!!!)
Sasuke continued, “I major in theoretical astrophysics at Kyoto University, specializing in wormholes and their potential for time travel. I’d conceived of a method for predicting the conditions for and patterns by which traversable wormholes manifested. That’s why I was at the stone monument that day. To verify my method.”
Sasuke had a smile in his voice, “I’ve been looking for you here, expecting you must have traveled back in time as I did. I hadn’t conceived of the possibility that you would arrive four years later.”
“Has it been hard?” It was surprising to Mai how emotionless he sounded. She remembered how Japan used to be, war-hardened, next to the kawaii scenic tourist location foreigners so romanticized in the twenty-first century. Mai quietly said, ”This is a war hell compared to the Japan you grew up in.”
Sasuke finally smiled, “I suppose you could say it’s a dream for me.  I get to see famous men and women of the Sengoku Period with my own eyes.”
“You’re strangely chipper about this.” Mai needs to get him home, probably now, and this was taking priority over discussing the properties of the rift with Bearsace after hearing how much history has changed.
Sasuke was happily talking now, “My parents were huge history buffs. I got my name from Sarutobi Sasuke-”
“Sarutobi Sasuke doesn’t exist. And I know that because I—hmm—Because I’m an actual historian.” He already knows about the rift—time travel—Mai considered just telling him about her being a witch.
Sasuke's face twitched, or lit up, “The legendary shinobi who served Sanada Yukimura. Because that Sasuke is fictional, I’ve taken his 'place’ in this time. That will let me keep my historical impact low.“
Mai fake laughed, ”Saving a dead man’s life isn’t low. And since when were you a shinobi, boy?” I was half joking. “Or is that something you picked up while you were here, Sarutobi-san?”
"I studied that here. It seemed useful to pick up a marketable vocation. Oh, please call me Sasuke.”
"Oh! I’m Mizusaki Mai. Mai is fine.” (We were each other’s only connection to home after all. From astrophysicist to shinobi. He’s frighteningly quick at adapting. I shook off my shock.)
Sasuke put out his hand. “Right now I’m employed with the men you saw earlier. Come with me. I promise I’ll find a way to return us both to the present.”
(Now would be the time to tell him I’m a witch.)
Mai was ready to take his hand when the sound of horses' hooves interrupted the silence.

I wanted to be special so I ALSO did the tier lists
I definitely have a bias towards IkéSen, and I bear zero shame in admitting that. I’ve quite literally written an ENTIRE book about them and would die for all of them (it’s basically a poly AU between Kenshin x OC x Shingen where they adopt all the other characters as children and also everyone’s shapeshifters)
Comte, Seth, and Kicho are intentionally at the very, VERY bottom <3 hate them.

Chapter 34: Turn the Page. An impatient Katsu discovers that Yoshimoto travels at his own pace - but maybe he has the correct idea?
Mitsuhide x OC; Hideyoshi x MC (Mai)
All Chapters Archived on Ao3
Logline - With Mai, Hideyoshi, and Aki missing, Mitsuhide and Katsuko reluctantly team up. Disguised as a merchant and his concubine, can they outsmart the man known as the God of Deceit?
Travel with Yoshimoto? I could probably get anywhere faster and less conspicuously without an escort, but in spite of his ambivalent manner, his knowledge of the politics involved would be worth having. Not to mention there was always the possibility that Yoshimoto wouldn’t give up the location of Yoshiaki’s hideout unless I agreed to go with him. “Thank you.”
He cast a critical eye over my clothes. He didn’t visibily flinch at my ‘Katsu’ drag, but he was clearly unimpressed. “Dare I hope that you still have the clothing Mitsuhide provided?"
"No." I didn’t mention the turquoise yukata. That wasn’t what I imagined Yoshimoto meant. "I've abandoned the Kaya identity completely."
"Pity. It would be most believable to Yoshiaki if I brought along a concubine." He tapped his fingers on the table. "Stand up, if you will."
Wondering what he had in mind, I obeyed the polite request. Yoshimoto got to his feet as well, and stood next to me, "You'll travel as my page, although I'll have to procure a suitable outfit. My own clothes would be far too long for you."
Had it been Mitsuhide who made such a statement, I would have protested that I wasn't too small, it was he who was too tall, but Yoshimoto had a way of making everything seem like a compliment. He thought a moment longer then added, "I have a relative whose castle will be on our route. I imagine we might find something suitable there, for you will certainly need warmer outfits for the mountains. Her son’s clothes will likely fit you."
Right. If Yoshiaki was in mining country, as the context of Iekane’s letter suggested, it would be colder there. Maybe not as cold as the Togakushi area where I was from, but cold enough to need heavy outerwear. "Thank you. My winter gear is back at my master’s home."
When Aki had first disappeared, it had been the last of summer. I had never expected the search to take me into late autumn. And yet… here I was, following a path that hopefully would not be another dead end. That morbid thought reminded me that I needed to make arrangements for Hiko tonight too.
Yoshimoto reached out and tested the thickness of my kimono. "Perhaps we'll encounter traders on the route. They might have some pelts they are taking to the export merchants." Huh. That suggested it was really cold where we were going (or that Yoshimoto just wanted an excuse to go for shopping). He knelt at his writing desk and jotted down a few notes. "Do you also need a horse?"
"No. Mine is already stabled in town and she's a surefooted mountain pony." A bad tempered one, true, but we'd be more likely to see snow instead of rain, so hopefully she'd cope.
“Ah, you might be better situated in that regard than I am.” Yoshimoto folded up the letter, and set it aside. “I’ll have one of Shingen’s spies take this to my cousin tomorrow.”
Hm – I hadn’t realized that the Takeda spy network reached as far south as Sakai. But that did present a solution to one of my other problems. “Do you have easy access to the mitsumono then? Because Sho’s younger brother is in danger, and it would be a good idea to have someone watching over him.”
“How much danger?” He looked at me steadily, perhaps reassessing what he’d just gotten himself into.
“Life threatening.” While I didn’t think Iekane was currently in Sakai (because if he were, why would he send a message to de Sousa instead of just talking face to face) he probably had access to assassins.
Yoshomoto reopened the letter and scrawled a few more lines. “To be safe, I can have him taken to Kasugayama until he’s out of danger.” He muttered something about Kenshin needing a hobby.
“If you could make that happen, that’s probably the best possible solution.” Iekane would have to be crazy to attack Kasugayama. Kenshin’s reputation as a fighter was infamous.
“A good idea will waft through my mind on occasion.” He hesitated a moment, then added, “Very rare occasions.” Before I could dispute that, he continued. “Right then. Another good idea is that we should sleep. You shall take my bed.”
"I can't kick you out of your bed." I’d broken into his room – it would be impolite to also steal his bed. For that matter, I couldn't imagine him sleeping on the floor.
"If you're that concerned for my comfort, we could share." The look he gave me was enough to convince me that a) it would not be platonic, b) he was not teasing, and c) he expected me to turn him down anyway.
"I'm actually used to roughing it. Don't forget that before I was p-p-pretending to be Mitsuhide's concubine,” Let’s just ignore the fact that for one night, it had not exactly been a pretense. “I was delivering messages all over the country. My tent and bedroll are with my horse, and it’s not as if I wouldn’t be using those the next few nights anyway."
If Yoshimoto noticed my hesitation in describing my relationship to Mitshide, he was kind enough not to mention it. "Tent. Bedroll. No that won't do. There are enough inns on the route to suit."
Ah. We were going glamping. Well, it was his money. The Imagawa were land poor, but Yoshimoto at least seemed to have unlimited wealth. I supposed that now I had liberated my, for want of a better description, trust fund, from Francisco's desk, I could afford to stay at an inn as well.
But for this night, I pointed to his bed. "You, futon. Me, floor." Without giving him a chance to argue, I simply stretched out in the corner, using my pack as a pillow.
The lantern light was suddenly shadowed by his figure, standing over me. “I don’t care that you are used to, as you say, ‘roughing it.’ I will not be able to sleep if I know that you are on the floor. Take my bed please. I have other options.”
… I ended up sleeping in his bed. Yoshimoto found an accommodating tea maid (perhaps the same one as before) and spent the night elsewhere.
Tumblr media
The following morning we were off, far later than I would have preferred, but Yoshimoto is not a morning person. In fact, by the time we had left the inn, taken care of half a dozen little tasks that Yoshimoto had insisted were important, it was long past dawn and I was already feeling impatient.
Luckily, getting in touch with one of Shingen’s spies took very little time – in fact as quickly as Yoshimoto made contact, one would think that she’d been watching for him. Or maybe even me, as it turned out that I knew her, for she was the kuinochi who had clued me in on the existence of the contraceptive tea. Sute, who didn’t appear to have a verbal ‘off’ button, had flitted around Yoshimoto, boldly flirting with him, before agreeing that bodyguarding a small boy to Kasugayama sounded like a fun new mission.
Her attention span seemed to jump from topic to topic so quickly that I was dizzy trying to keep up with her. “I love children, I would have a dozen of my own, but Chiyome thinks I would get bored with babies, so she reminds me to drink the – oh, Katsu, are you still drinking the tea?” She twined her arms around Yoshimoto for a moment. “You will need to if you will be travelling with this one. His skin is so very soft, do you not agree?” Then before I could respond to that (although what, really could I say?) she suddenly changed moods completely. “If someone is trying to kill a small boy, don’t worry, I will gut him like a fish.” She gestured to the arsenal of weapons and tools she had with her.
To add reassurance, Yoshimoto nodded. “All of Shingen’s mitsumono are brutal in a fight if necessary. Shingen won’t send anyone out who can’t protect themselves and others. Let us retrieve this child now.” It was said with a slight impatience … as if I hadn’t been agitating to get this show on the road hours ago.
I had a general idea where Hiko and his family lived, and well, Sho’s looks made it easy to track them all down. All I’d had to say was ‘green eyed beauty’ and her neighbors pointed me to their house.
Once Hiko had been guaranteed that his mother and sisters would be taken care of in a safe house arranged by Yoshimoto, he treated the idea of traveling to Kasugayama as a great adventure. In fact the biggest resistence to the plan came from Sho. Though she didn’t blink at my transformation from Kaya to Katsu, the news that Hiko was in danger was another issue altogether. In a show of defiance, my former maid not only refused to go with her mother and sisters to the safe haven, but also insisted upon accompanying her brother as an additional bodyguard. “I’m not helpless. And you’ll need another pair of eyes to keep watch on him. Hiko gets into everything.”
Sute had given her a long measuring look, then surprisingly agreed to another travelling companion.
In fact, Sute and Sho seemed to take an instant liking to each other, and as they got on the road, I could hear them chattering about everything under the sun.
Finally, Yoshimoto and I were able to leave Sakai too. I was happy to have the city in my so called rearview mirror. Moonlight also was glad to be on the road, especially after being stuck in a stable for weeks. I felt the same. Playing house, so to speak, with Mitsuhide would always have been a chore for me because I just didn’t like being inside. Getting back on the road was such a blessed relief....
And maybe if you keep telling yourself that, you will eventually come to believe it.
The only person who didn’t seem relieved to leave the city was Yoshimoto himself. With a figurative dark cloud looming over his head, his frown and drooping posture suggested some private misery. I suspected it had to do with his rebellious vassals, but I hesitated to question him because I didn’t want to make matters worse.
Thankfully, once we were well out of town, and the humid sea air gave way to a cooler crisp weather, he shook himself out of the mood and began peppering me with questions about the future, or, more specifically about the art and culture of the future. “You’ve never talked about this stuff with Sasuke?”
Yoshimoto’s shoulder lifted in a graceful shrug. “I have tried sometimes, but it was clear that his tastes and mine do not converge and I find it frustrating to hear about adventure stories when I prefer to learn about theater, art and dance.”
“Um, you’re probably going to find my conversation just as bothersome then.” Sports were always my interest, and I knew nothing about painting or sculpture.
He turned a dazzling smile to me. “Not at all. Conversation with a lovely young woman is never a bother.” Whoa. I had forgotten that Yoshimoto could turn on the charm when he wished to.
Huh. Hm. I didn’t want to disappoint him after that, so after thinking for a moment, I decided I could manage to speak somewhat authoritatively about film. I took him through the plots of Ran and Throne of Blood, giving him a brief run down of Kurosawa which then detoured to Shakespeare (at least what I could recall of both – which wasn’t a lot in regard to Shakespeare, given my habit of skipping school). And then I remembered that Ran had been inspired by Motonari, or at least the version of him from my own timeline, which made everything weird for me all over again.
Over the past seven years, I had gotten used to living in the same era as the historical figures I had grown up learning about in school. I'd rarely encountered them though, so it had been easy to pretend that they were still characters in a film. Now, I'd just spent the bulk of autumn with Mitsuhide, taken part in a rescue of Hideyoshi, and was travelling with Yoshimoto. I was feeling a bit of surrealistic alienation.
"Katsuko, what happened next?" I realized that Yoshimoto was waiting for me to continue telling him the plot of Ran. "How do they get all of these battles on the stage? Or are your theaters bigger?"
Whoops, I had skipped over the technology involved, "It's not live, we have a different, or well another medium to stage visual stories." As best I could, I tried to explain how movies were made, and how they were available to be viewed at the push of a button.
He got very quiet for a while before saying, "I can't decide if the idea of holding a play in the palm of my hand whenever I want is wonderful or terrible. I'm afraid it would make it all less special."
Hm. He had a point, I supposed. "I've never known any other way. We still have live theater, and dance. It didn’t go away. It's just... really expensive. At least with streaming, more people can enjoy it. Even in my time, people with unlimited funds are the exception, not the rule."
He turned to look at me, and there was pity in that glance. "Is that how you grew up? Were you poor?"
Yoshimoto might consider it so, but he was coming from a life where he’d at least monetarily had everything he wanted and never had to make decisions about whether or not he could afford something. “No. We always had enough to eat, shelter, warm clothes. Just not much extra."
I'd worked in a coffee shop for three years to save up for my snowboard. I didn’t really want to explain further. Though Yoshimoto (when he was in the mood) was an interesting conversationalist, talking about my childhood wasn't something I enjoyed doing, and he didn’t have Mitsuhide's ability to take with facts I gave him and accurately understand the conflicting emotions attached to them. So instead of revealing more of myself, I diverted Yoshimoto's attention back to the movies.
Unfortunately Yoshimoto proved to be distractible in every area of his life, and rather than making good time and traveling directly to our destination, he would often stop, even in the smallest villages, and visit with craftsmen and artisans.
I found it frustrating, and, I’m sure the hulking spy (Mitsuhide’s man – I recognized him from Sakai), who had been patiently following us for several days felt the same. When we stopped to visit what seemed like the tenth artisan in three days, I finally had to protest. “It seems like we’re not making very good time. I could have gotten there already.”
"Would you have pushed yourself and your horse to exhaustion?” Yoshimoto held a ceramic bowl up to the light. It was so shiny, his reflection was visible in it. “By traveling in this manner, you can go faster in short bursts. I would wager we're covering nearly the same territory in the amount of time it would take you to travel the other way. And this way, we learn whether or not Yoshiaki is massing an army because these villagers take note of everything."
Hm. Ok. He was right… and I should have thought of that myself. In my impatience over our lack of speed, I'd stopped paying attention to Yoshimoto’s conversations with the innkeepers and artisans. My bad. "Is he?"
"Not as of yet. I believe he's still in the process of getting promises of support from anti-Oda clans. Small ones." Yoshimoto reluctantly gave the bowl back to the artisan. It was too big to take with us (not that it had stopped his other purchases). "With winter setting in, he'll wait to attack in spring. No one wants to march an army through the mountains in a blizzard."
He turned back to the artisan and purchased the bowl anyway. "I can gift it to my cousin. We're almost to their castle."
Yoshimoto apparently had relatives all over Japan although the exact lines of ancestry I was never clear on. This particular cousin Ohana was married to a daimyo who was currently an ally of Kenshin, or at least that was the apparent relationship. It didn’t seem like much of a connection, especially not when we were basically dropping by with very little warning.
However, when we arrived at a small castle in Takayama, Ohana's husband Susumu welcomed us warmly. Then he immediately bore Yoshimoto off for a long war conversation, leaving Ohana to outfit me with clothing belonging to her youngest son. Besides a warm fur cloak, there were kimonos and hakamas in rich heat-absorbent shades of blue and black. I felt terrible taking her kid's wardrobe, but she waved off my protests.
"In truth, if Genmaro is anything like his father and brothers, I expect he will be half a head taller and more before the new year. And with no other children behind him, I would have sent these on to another cousin anyway." She threw a sturdy dark wine colored kimono on the pile.
I supposed that due to the fact I needed to look the part of an Imagawa page, it was in a sense a uniform. Armor. At least it was physical armor. It seemed that I would need some mental armor as well - both Ohana and Susumu had reacted with identical expressions of horror when Yoshimoto said he was planning to visit Yoshiaki. I imagined that a large portion the conversation between Susumu and Yoshimoto included the Sengoku versions of the expression, ‘are you nuts?’
Yeah, Yoshiaki was beginning to sound like the monster under the bed.
I half expected Yoshimoto’s cousins to lock him in a room and perform an intervention, but all that they managed to do was convince him to spend the night with them, so that we would be awake and alert when we arrived at Yoshiaki’s hideout. We would take with us not only warmer clothing, but also a couple additional servants, as both Yoshimoto and Susumu agreed that in the case of the Shogun, “more is more.”
And ‘more is more’ as in this is beginning to feel like more and more of serious production. As in, if you screw this up, it is more and more likely that you and Yoshimoto will die. It was at that moment that I realized I didn’t actually know what a page did. It was not in my repertoire of disguises, so as we were preparing for the visit, I asked, "Do you have any particular instructions? I've never been a page before."
This request was at least partially prompted by my worry for his mental state. He hadn’t slept at all the night before, for every time I woke up, I saw him standing by the window, staring out at the moon. Indeed, that was where he was when I got up. The moon had set, but Yoshimoto was clinging to that window as if it were a portal to another land. If the wormhole were to appear, I suspect he would leap right into it, not caring about where it led (him, I should at least warn him about the dinosaur possibility). I tried again to get his attention. “Yoshimoto? What does your page do? Carry your luggage?”
With an attitude of reluctance, Yoshimoto finally turned his attention to me. "Stand behind me, in my shadow if possible, bow as low as you can manage, and keep facing down. Don't look at him."
Well, that's ominous. "And if, when I find Iekane?" Accusing the man in front of the Shogun would apparently be an enormous breach of protocol. Probably even considered treason.
"Do you think he will recognize you?" He set out little ceramic pots of make-up… hopefully not for me.
"Well... probably, yes. He knew me as both housemaid Kaya and courier Katsu, so whichever way I’m dressed, he’ll be familiar." Plus, he had, I was sure now, been in Sakai right before my accident, so he'd seen me recently.
He was quiet a moment. "Bow to the floor as soon as you enter, and don't rise unless I give you a direct order. Yoshiaki will think it’s his due anyway."
He sounds like a real charmer. He and Iekane probably deserved each other. Hopefully the floor wouldn’t be too cold there at. Hm. “And what is the name of this place?”
“Genba.” Yoshimoto bit off the word as if it tasted terrible.
Genba.
It was the first I had heard of it. So why was I suddenly feeling claustrophobic while my mind presented me images of a labarinthine path, dark corridors, and the smell of poison? I knew I had never been there before. The word, the place name, totally unfamiliar.
But… something…?
Genba.
Tumblr media
Note: "Genba" will sound familiar to anyone who's read "A Mitsunari Night's Dream" as most of the action took place there. Katsu is just getting a deja vu from that other timeline. But the people who live in this Genba aren't exactly the same characters who lived in that other timeline, so it's not necessary to have read Mitsunari's story ... you haven't missed any vital information.

It was the evening of the feast, a lavish banquet was held to celebrate … she did not even know what, but somehow anyone gathered in the hall of Kasugayama castle appreciated the idea, music could be heard from a distance as the men inside drank the night away, loud chers and metallic clangor of katana and swords could be heard from time to time, making her chuckle softly certainly Kenshin would have never learnt the art of quietness and a side of her was happy that way, after all it would have been so boring otherwise, and judging by the overly mirthful voice of Shingen he too would have not stopped pestering his friend either, she turned to get a peek at it in time to see Yukimura making a flee from the door away from his boss followed closely by Yoshimoto, her giggles resonated in the still air of the night carried over by the frizzy breeze along the suffused melody of the nocturnal animals.
She was sat on the patio looking over at the moon, letting the chill air of the night refresh her mind, smiling at herself at the sight of someone sitting next to her, his musky and woody scent she would have recognized among thousand invading her nostrils making her heart leap up at the sound of his deep husky voice, ever able to make her sigh dreamily
“I was looking for you.” a shy smile danced on her lips as she tuned to look at him, the warm light of the lanterns reflected in his chocolate eyes crinkled with affection
“Sorry for the bother.”
“Please don't even mention it, however I think you may need some.”
“You are wonderful, you know ?” she took the glass of water he offered her gulping it down, before looking gratefully at him
“Thank you. The meals were delicious but it seems the cook has not paid for the salt he used.” a throaty chuckle slipped past his lips she gazed at him fondly, giggling softly feeling her heart melt by the sheer idea she was able to make him happy as he made her, desiring nothing more than to shower him in the love he deserved of, as he so generously did to her, grateful for that feelings that linked their hearts together against all odds.
The frizzy air of the evening getting colder by the minute, but she did not felt anything of it warmed up by the shawl he so generously leaned over her shoulder, his scent invading her nostrils making her dizzy noticing he had stood up only when he offered her his hands, she promptly took raising to her feet ready to follow him inside, when a playful idea flickered in her mind, she took both his hands in hers, she smiled at the thought she really had him wrapped around her fingers seeing his eagerness to follow her movements as she begin to spin around the garden, feeling him doing his best to follow her lead before switching up the roles, she eagerly gave up to lost in the admiration of his handsome features gawking in awe at the smoldering passion glimmering in his eyes, such shade of dark brown chocolate like piping hot cocoa in winter keeping her warm whenever he set his gaze on her, making her happy wherever they went, showing his love with both words and actions enough to melt her heart at the deep affection he held for her.
They were dancing under the moonlight, bathing them in its light looking at that peculiar show of love along the curious stars peeking from their castles in the sky, immersed in their own world deaf and dumb to the outside as they waltzed around the grass, before coming to a stop, their eyes locked together caught amidst the blaze of a burning passion impossible to tame he melted his lips on hers, her fingers gripping the front of his kimono to stead herself from his passionate kiss she so eagerly reciprocated, moaning at the sensation of his tongue leading her in a slow sweet dance of their own, unaware of the amber gaze of his friend looking at them with a knowing smile on his lips, chuckling softly before slipping inside once more, reluctantly he pulled away only when breathless leaning his forehead to hers, his hot breath fanning over her lips at his heartfelt confession she did not shied away to reciprocate.
“I love you more than anything in the world my angel .”
“I love you too, my tanuki, more than I can say.”
His eyes speaking of promises and secrets as he took her hand in his, leaving a soft kiss on her knuckles
“Come with me.” this words alone had her hooked to follow him everywhere, curious to know more about his surprise but even simply delighted at the thought of spending some time alone with him, she squeezed lightly his hand revelling in the warmth of his fingers entwined with hers
“There is something I want to show you.” he did not needed to add anything else to convince her but he did, desiring to egg her on her own curiosity, his kindness melted her heart she did her best to sync her movements with his, smiling at herself noticing how he had slowed down his own to match hers.
They dived in the forest surrounding the castle for a bit, it was dark all around only the moon showing them the way but she was not afraid, she had full trust in him and she knew that he would protected her anywhere, plus she couldn't help but ignore all her doubts pushed to follow him further into the vegetation by curiosity alone, his presence alone made her feel safe despite their surrounding, she managed only to caught glimpse of through their walk.
They arrived in an empty field, alike the others they had walked through, when suddenly he turned to her, a bright smile curling his lips lightning up his gruff handsome features as he looked down at her, his onyx eyes crinkled with affection he encouraged her to get closer to him an invite she had no intention to refuse, huddled in his arms with his shawl covering her shoulder she felt safe and happy to simply bask in the moment with him, away from the noisy feast.
Foretelling her impatience he wrapped his arm tighter around her hips as they sit side by side on the soft grass, murmuring
“Be patient my love.” a sheepish smile curled on her lips, it was embarrassing and yet the thought he was so in tune and thoughtful of her make her heart swell with love, she shifted closer to him smiling at the tender expression glimmering in his moonless eyes as he caressed the flowers all around him, before picking one that had fallen from the stem bringing it to lips, brushing his lips on it before leaning over her, she was so taken aback by his sudden gestures and mesmerised by the love lighting his features she was pulled away from her awe only by his husky deep voice
“It looks even more beautiful on you.” gently she touched next to her ear, where she had felt his fingers brush on her curls, a smile brighter than thousand sun curled on her lips as she looked up at him managing to murmur
“Thank you, so much.” an heart melting smile curled his lips as he leaned over to brush his lips on her forehead
“Thank you for staying.” a sweet kiss suggelling their love, making her forget all about the reason that brought them there, basking in the happiness of being together.
Reluctantly he pulled away, carefully wrapping his shawl tighter around her shoulder as the breeze grew frizzier by the minute, murmuring softly in her ear
“Look around you.” she promptly obeyed, taking in the wonderful sight before her eyes,
“It is wonderful.” she looked at him, blushing softly at his answer, compliments that never failed to fill her heart with affection for him
“Indeed.” the gentle frizzy breeze treasuring his words as he looked at her, she turned around smiling at him taking his hand in hers, admiring fireflies lighting the path around them, the grain field lightened by the moonlight as they stayed there looking at that spectacle, flowers blooming all around them, their colors brightened by the visit of the fireflies buzzing here and there in search of a lover to share a precious night with, travelling far and wide only for love, it was such a dreamy naive thought and yet she could not help but sigh softly thinking of it, smiling to herself at the warmth of his hand engulfing her entwining their fingers together, heat rising to her cheeks at the intimacy of his touch, she meet his gaze briefly enough to see a light blush veiling on his cheeks.
She smiled as one landed on her hand she promptly raised to show him, admiring the gentleness of his calloused fingers on her skin as the little bug slide on his, mesmerized by the light reflecting in his soft gaze admiring the little firefly travel on his bigger hand before fling away a tender smile curling his lips as he gazed off in the distance almost as to follow it
“I thought you may have liked it.” his voice husky and low, only sound to break the still air of the night,
“You know me so well it is not fair.” she giggled hiding her blush in her sleeves, squeezing softly his hand in hers, her eyes locked with his as he cupped her face in his hand
“Please do not cover yourself from me my angel I want to see all of you.” an heart melting smile curled her lips she raised her hand brushing her fingers on his cheeks revelling in the tender smile curling his usually stern lips, their eyes glimmering with all the love they felt for one another, she did her best to convey standing on her tiptoes  to plant a soft kiss on his cheek
“Thank you for the wonderful spectacle my tanuki.” her soft nicknames melting his heart he wrapped his arms around her bringing her closer to his chest, cupping her face with one hand melting his lips on her forehead, revelling in her tingling giggle filling his heart with happiness he did not know to be worthy of.
Gently she kissed his scar before brushing her lips on his nose, affection swelling in his chocolate eyes as he looked at her, leaning closer to brush a feather light kiss on the tip of her nose before sliding down to melt his lips on her in a sweet soft kiss they wanted to last forever, conveying all the deep love hold in their heart only for one another, her fingers gripping his kimono to steady herself from his passion, moaning at the feeling of his tongue waltzing with hers, reluctantly pulling away only when breathless, he leaned his forehead to hers brushing his fingers on her cheeks looking straight into her colorful eyes he would have recognized among thousand, reflecting her unstoppable curiosity
“I love you more than anyone in the whole world.” a smile so bright to put the sun itself to shame danced on her lips, warming his heart with the warmth of thousand suns
“I love you so much, words are not enough to say.” he hugged her closer to his chest leaving a reverent kiss full of devotion on her soft curls basking in her soft giggles, melting at the soft brushing of her lips over his heart, making it burst and swell with all the deep sealed feeling he held only for her, doing his best to keep his composure when he heard her sensual murmur in his ear, a glimpse of passion flickering in her eyes as she looked straight into his deep onyx eyes, smiling at the soft caress of her fingers on his cheek trailing softly on his lips
“Please my tanuki do not hold anything back with me. I want you as you are.”
her words brushing away the little self control he had, reassuring him the desire of deepening their intimacy was mutual, far from his mind was left her dissatisfied and so not wasting a second he took her in his arms, revelling in the amazed expression glimmer in her eyes as she giggled happily al the way back home, bashfully hiding her face in his neck as they entered in the castle, not meeting anyone, not even servants, things that lead them to believe Shingen had them retire early to give them enough privacy, request he was exempted from following as he looked at them from the patio in front of his room smiling at the curious sight of her laughing all the way held in his arms while a bright smile curled his usually stern lips and gruff features, his heart bursting with happiness for them both as resumed his moon watching with a malicious smirk dancing on his lips  as he saw them slip inside their room, ready for the continuation of a magical night in which they would have not shied away from showing off their love to one another with all themselves until dawn.

In a Bit of a Pickle...d Plum
Kenshin x Pickled Plums (wow this is such a shocking pair); A crack fic (a woefully uninspired fic)
Kasugayama runs out of pickles and Kenshin gets extra stabby when he doesn't have his beloved plums to enjoy with his drink.
Word Count: 917 @drewadoodle
Tumblr media
Kasugayama was bustling with energy as the warlords and vassals celebrated with a banquet. Shingen was enjoying his drink with Yukimura and Yoshimoto while Kanetsugu kept Kenshin company and Sasuke tried to go unnoticed.
But Kenshin wouldn’t let Sasuke escape. Kenshin’s stash of pickled plums were running low so he asked Sasuke to get him more.
“My lord, I regret to inform you that there are no more pickled plums available,” Sasuke told him. Everyone in attendance went silent when the news reached their ears. It was so quiet that the crickets outside were the loudest things in the area.
“What do you mean there’s no more pickled plums?” Kenshin narrowed his eyes.
“There are no pickled plums ready for consumption,” Sasuke told him. Kenshin’s hand went to his sword.
“I will get some for you, my lord,” Kanetsugu spoke up. He stood up, bowed and left the room. Kenshin’s hand moved away from his sword.
By the time Kanetsugu got back, it was late into the night and most of the vessels and warlords had already gone home. Kenshin was still sitting there, sipping sake, moping. Sasuke’s expressionless face looked more traumatized than usual. Yukimura looked sick while Yoshimoto seemed interested in something else and Shingen was sitting there dozing off.
“These are the last batch of pickled plums,” Kanetsugu said as he presented it to Kenshin.
Kenshin looked very pleased. “Perfect. I can enjoy my last cup of sake.”
The next day, Kenshin called an emergency meeting. Yukimura, Shingen, Yoshimoto, Sasuke, and Kanetsugu gathered around when Kenshin announced, “We will get pickled plums from somewhere else.”
Kanetsugu volunteered himself without hesitation. Yukimura complained, and Shingen was rambling about how he could get his spies to acquire pickled plums. Yoshimoto didn’t seem to be too interested in the pickled plum operation as he was distracted by something else. “Sasuke, go with him,” Kenshin commanded. Sasuke obeyed, bowing his head without protest.
And so, Kanetsugu and Sasuke set out for Azuchi; they agreed on going to Azuchi because they could gather information while getting pickled plums.
“Should we split up the work?” Sasuke asked. “You get the plums and I’ll get some info?” Kanetsugu agreed and the two went their separate ways.
Kanetsugu wandered around the streets of Azuchi, on the lookout for pickled plums. Instead of finding pickled plums, he bumped into a pig on the street. The pig had a little passion fruit in its mouth and Kanetsugu knew exactly who the pig belonged to. And there was the pig’s owner, running to catch up. “Yo Kanetsugu, fancy meeting you here,” Keiji greeted him. His smile was big and bright as he scooped up the pig into his arms.
“Keep your voice down,” he told Keiji. “I’m here to collect merchandise.”
“What kind of merchandise?” Keiji raised a brow.
“Pickled plums,” he answered.
Keiji burst into boisterous laughter, “I thought it was more serious than that.”
“It’s very serious. My lord requires a wealthy supply of pickled plums.”
“Come, I’ll show you a good place for those plums,” Keiji said.
Meanwhile in Echigo, in the depths of Kasugayama castle, Kenshin visited his personal stash of pickled plums. They were still in the process of fermentation, so they quietly sat, untouched and undisturbed. Kenshin’s lips spread into a smile that was full of endearment. “Ferment well, my little plums,” he told them as if he was tucking his children in. He closed the door and left them alone. His face immediately fell into a frown when he was reminded of the fact that they still had a few months left before they could be enjoyed.
Everyone made sure to stay out of Kenshin’s broody mood. However, Yukimura unfortunately couldn’t escape it.
He was dodging attacks left and right while Kenshin never broke a sweat. Shingen was watching the whole thing unfold in front of him. He shook his head and sighed, “Kenshin, I think he’s had enough.”
“But we just got started,” Kenshin replied.
“We started an hour ago?!” Yukimura shouted.
“That was just the warm up,” Kenshin said.
Yukimura groaned as he defended himself. “I hope they come back soon with those plums because I can’t do this every single day!”
Kanetsugu was hoarding plums. He and Sasuke met up and Keiji sent them back on their way to Echigo.
“Did you buy their entire stock?” Sasuke asked.
“Yes,” Kanetsugu responded.
“Oh.” Sasuke went quiet as he made some mental calculations. “We’ll have to stop frequently to let the horses rest from all that weight.” Kanetsugu just grunted in understanding and silence fell upon them.
When they reached Kasugayama Castle, the two dismounted and immediately took the horses to rest before reporting back to Kenshin. Kanetsugu showed Kenshin the goods and a genuine expression of happiness graced his face. “Well done,” Kenshin praised. “We shall have a banquet to celebrate.”
“Oh dear,” Sasuke mumbled.
That night, Kenshin enjoyed his sake with his beloved plums; he was surrounded by jars of plums. The smile on his face was so bright that it was almost creepy. Simply going near the plums would earn a death glare from Kenshin too. But even though Kenshin was feeling extra possessive over his plums, the night ended without incident.
“Sasuke,” he called out, “help me take these plums to my room.” He was slightly tipsy as he transported his plums. Sasuke sighed and assisted him. When they finished, Sasuke tucked Kenshin into bed and bid him and his plums good night.

HC: Warlords having “THE Talk”
x fem!Reader Crack NSFW Premise: It just so happens that you realise your beloved may be lacking in regards to certain knowledge, and decide to talk with him about it. Suitors: Nobunaga, Mitsuhide, Hideyoshi, Mitsunari, Masamune, Ieyasu, Kenshin, Shingen, Sasuke, Yukimura, Kennyo Content Warnings: none*
*- mind the other labels + topic
Nobunaga
He takes it just plain wrong. Not that he is angry, but he certainly is moody, assuming - for whatever reason - that you consider him irresponsible. How dare.
Would having his child be so bad a fate? After all, he’ll need a heir just regardless!... Does this mean you DO NOT want to ever have children?? That could prove to be problematic! What if land fell back into chaos after he’s gone? HE NEEDS TO PREPARE FOR THAT. Why are you telling him only now???
Oh. He misunderstood. He listens to you, but he feels compelled to add you’re not getting any younger.
Still grumpy. He knows how to make children and you should be aware of that. Details? Unimportant. (He will ask about them more after he degrumpifies himself. He isn’t too proud about jumping to conclusions).
Mitsuhide
He listens in carefully and nods along the explanations, stays otherwise silent until you’re done with your lecture.
He points our it’s all future knowledge, and that none of the contraception methods you’ve listed have been invented yet. It’s... a good point. He also adds that the rest is but theory.
He ends up lecturing you on period appropriate (or well, available) methods of contraception. He can’t give much details on some of them, though... Not that you’d wish to know about those particular ones.
You’re lost, confused and less enlightened than you thought you were. Now, how are you supposed to have sex with your lover again? S. O. S., where’s the “FAQ by Time-Travellers for Time-Travellers” when you need it...
Hideyoshi
Focuses on periods. A lot. He wants to know everything about them, and grows a little pale upon realising you’re quite literally shedding tissue during menstruation.
What do you mean future people can have sex without worrying about the pregnancy? He always assumed one only did it when accepting it as a possibility. He misunderstood???
Great. Now he’s terrified of making love to you, because WHAT IF - what if - you get pregnant with his child and don’t want to be in that position?? What next??? He is not ready to become a single dad! (Although... He may have some experience... And his fatherhood may not be the only issue there...)
He copes by asking some of the married maids for advice. He doesn’t like what he hears. He... He needs a moment to process it all, okay?
Mitsunari
Oh, he’s curious. From strictly theoretical standpoint, but he is enthusiastic to learn more about the topic.
He asks questions. A lot of questions. You aren’t necessarily sure how to answer some of them.
He’s a strategist and this clearly is a war against sperm. You will find him scavenging for books on the medicine (merchants - mildly bothered, to say the least). It may last weeks. He NEEDS to invent a strategy. Duh.
Luckily, he forgets about it all when it comes to the actual love-making. You’re honestly very relieved... He... Got TOO enthusiastic with his fool-proofing...
Ieyasu
It’s just a casual conversation. He’s mostly interested in how the modern contraception methods work (as in, the mechanisms of them).
He reckons none of them are quite replicable as things are, though. Regrettably so.
He also asks about deliveries, infant mortality, what do people do in case of lactation problems, etc. Overall, all things early human development and delivery, although you don’t necessarily have much experience with either of those.
He asks if you’re willing to make this risk, since he can’t guarantee you safety as things are. He seems sad about it.
Masamune
Another terrified one, but for different reasons.
Listen, he knows he can pull out just fine (Masamune, no, that’s exactly the point...), and he has one eye, which is plenty enough to understand what needs to be understood about periods. But STDs and STIs?! He knows he slept with his fair share of people, what if he transmitted some??!
It honestly scares you too, so you both go over all the symptoms you are aware of. Seems he’s all right. Once again, your lover is luckier than smarter (at least when it comes to taking very risky risks).
All in all, he actually puts effort into understanding this everything, even with the surrounding theory. He drops being serious eventually, though, and requests a presentation. Hands on.
Kenshin
He both misunderstands you and ends up being terrified.
Misunderstands, because he knows how many times he came inside of you and now he believes you hated it. You must have, right? He NEVER asked! He didn’t know it could get you pregnant!
Terrified, because WHAT IF he for you pregnant?? Against your will?! Deliveries are risky too?? Are you going to die??
Honestly, he avoided women, so he knows next to nothing about any of that. He’s overwhelmed with data and you end up needing several more talks.
Shingen
At first, he mistakes it for a flirting attempts and tries to flirt back at you. After he realises that you’re serious, he listens carefully.
He actually asks whether you’d even want to have children.
Too many sex related stale jokes and puns follow in the next few days... Weeks... Each time he uses a future word, he asks you whether he did so correctly.
He ends up thinking he should give the talk to Yukimura. He goes forward with that. Shingen, no! You’re not his real dad!
Sasuke
[Soon after returning from the future]
He gives YOU a lecture. On historical methods... But also biology, chemistry and physics of sperm. All at once. Sasuke, HOW exactly does your web search history look?
He jumps to kink. Again, Sasuke, was browsing this your hobby? Not that you don’t want the information, BUT YOU DIDN’T EXPECT ACADEMIA STYLE LECTURE ON THE HISTORY OF BONDAGE. (With useful knots for tying down enemies as appending A).
He asks you all about your cycle and vaginal discharge. You don’t know why, but apparently, it allows him to put together a prototype of a fertility calendar.
At the end of the day, NONE OF THIS MATTERS (at least not much), as it turns out he stocked up on condoms and emergency contraception during your last stay in the future. (Honestly, why didn’t you think about it too? ; Yes, he thought you just wanted to talk about the topic for the joy of it).
Yukimura
Gets embarrassed when you bring up the topic. At first he listens to you carefully.
He looses it at the mention of fetishes, ‘outdoor sex’ in particular.
Why do you have to bring up the forest incident?
Ticks can do what??
Embarrassed. Didn’t get any of the theory. He understood some of the practical implications, though. Or so he thinks.
‘Uterus’ = womb = evil organ that he doesn’t have and is happy about it
Kennyo
He tries to understand every word, although it’s somewhat hard at him when you use modern vocabulary. It’s just that... Hormones, the names of them, it’s a lot to take in.
He doesn’t make any scene, but he is a little quiet afterwards. It follows him through the next few days, so you end up asking what’s the matter.
Turns out he misunderstood the point of the talk, but didn’t want to bother you with it or to impose on you.
The truth is... He secretly hoped that maybe one day you’d have a child together. Again, he never voiced this, as he didn’t want to impose anything on you.
He look a tiny bit like a puppy when admitting that.

Epilogue: Sky Clad Promise -Shingen fulfills a promise that he made months ago in the cave.
Shingen x OC; Kenshin x MC (Mai)
Previous Chapter: Here
Logline - Disguised as a boy, Katsuko finds herself working for Shingen, but her dangerous masquerade becomes difficult to sustain when she falls for the man with a fatal secret.
The letter sat innocently on Shingen’s desk – all three of our names were written across it. For a moment, none of us made a move to open it, although I did pick it up and shake it. No telltale rattle of shogi tiles. I supposed that was a message in and of itself. “Did you see who delivered it?”
“Reddish hair, big ears,” Sasuke said. He took the packet and turned it over and back, then set it on the desk again. “I questioned him, but he was insistent that he didn’t have any additional knowledge.
“That’s Takauji. He probably doesn’t know where Aki is now, but he usually delivers through the San’ido circuit, that might be where Aki last was – or he may have picked up the message directly from the Mountain.” The latter was less likely as Shingen’s mitsumono had been pretty closely watching for him there. Also, Taka was the least naturally inquisitive of Aki’s messengers so it would have been useless to press him for more knowledge… a fact that Aki was well aware of.
Finally, Shingen took the initiative of unfolding the letter and reading it to all of us.
By this time, all three of you have realized that I spend a considerable amount of my life travelling between and amongst various timelines-
“Skipped the greeting.” Sasuke helped himself to some tea.
“Aki is only warm in small doses.” You’d think after seven years, though, he would have offered at least a ‘best regards’ to me, instead of what amounted to a generic, ‘to whom it may concern.’ Then again, who was I to complain – I’d been guilty of skipping a greeting often enough.
Lord Shingen, while I appreciate the amount of work you have done to create your mitsumono network, it is not the best use of resources to send them all after me.
“Noticed that, did he?” Shingen flexed his wrist in memory of the hours he and I had spent writing instructions to his spies.
I would not like to interrupt my work to have to fish one of them out of a timeline.
“That would be bad.” Sasuke settled down at the desk with his tea. “Although Sute would probably get a kick out of it.”
I took a moment to envision the chaos that Sute could cause in a timeline. “She might, but Sasuke Mach 2 might not.”
“Oh… I might.” Sasuke was typically blank faced, but Shingen shot him a look. Hm. There was something here I was missing. I’d have to get it out of Shingen later.
Katsuko, I apologize for not telling you that I knew you were from the future, and that I was a traveler as well. It was my belief that you would adjust faster and more easily that way. There was a rather specific task that I needed you to perform – and rest assured you have completed it. I was unsure when and how this situation would present in this timeline. Readying you for that was essential.
“Do you think it was related to…?” Sasuke inclined his head in Shingen’s direction.
“I am sitting right here.” Despite the sarcasm, Shingen gave Sasuke a look of affectionate patience.
I shook my head. “No. I think it must be the boy. Hikosane. I ran into Aki in Kasugayama a few weeks before you and Shingen went to the future, and he said something to the effect that I had done whatever it was he wanted me to do.”
“You never mentioned that to me.” Shingen flicked my forehead, but too gently to sting.
“I had other things on my mind.” I probably wouldn’t have mentioned it in any case, but I truly had forgotten.
This timeline has stabilized, and I am addressing this comment directly to Mr. Mikumo--
Sasuke tapped his chest. “He sounds so professor-like there.”
It would be best if you traveled to the future as infrequently as possible. I realize that forbidding such excursions would be futile, but please treat this as a serious request.
Sasuke shrugged. “So there goes Mai’s request that I make occasional chocolate runs.”
“She likely wouldn’t have needed to ask if someone hadn’t raided her stash.” I eyed Shingen and contemplated a forehead flick of my own.
He winked at me then gave me that wicked smile. “I thought it was for all of us.”
Sure you did.
Katsuko, while I wish I could say that you are released from any additional obligations to me, and I’m sure you would argue that these obligations are on my side, the future is fluid. If I call on you, it will be because the matter is urgent. There are circumstances unfolding which may affect multiple timelines. As the three of you are self-aware to the multiverse, you may be needed at some point.
“Well… that’s not ominous at all.” Although deep down… deep deep down… I was intrigued by the possibility of performing an interesting timeline mission – as long as Shingen was with me. But I would never willing go into a wormhole alone again.
Although you may not believe me, I truly wish for your happiness. Yamaoka Akihira
Shingen tossed the message back on his desk. “This… didn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know, or at least, suspect.”
“Likely why he wrote the letter instead of allowing us to question him in person.” There were a lot of things I wanted to know. I also wanted to go out to the archery course and shoot arrows at targets with Aki’s face on them.
“It sounded like he’s abandoned this timeline, doesn’t it?” Sasuke got up and began pacing, the way he did when he had the tendrils of a theory but nothing to grasp onto. “The question is whether or not there are other versions of Professor Yamaoka in the other timelines too, or if he has figured out how to avoid duplicating himself.”
“I know you want to locate him and question him further – and I do as well – however…” Shingen paused. I could see he was trying to figure out an easy way to tell me that he had other priorities. He was right. He did have more important things to do. If he put all of his resources and energy toward finding Aki, it could be at the expense of this timeline’s history.
“But there’s too much going on in the here and now – you’re right.” We’d just been talking about some of those priorities before Sasuke came in. “Use your mitsumono for the purpose that you built them. If they happen to run across Aki, then they can bring him in, but until then, I guess we have to let it go.”
Of course, I did intend to take a trip up to Aki’s manor at The Mountain and see if there was any useful information to be found there. Shingen might not love that idea, but I was sure I could talk him into it. I slanted a quick glance at him – and was rewarded with a suspicious stare.
Alright… I could possibly talk him into it.
But for the moment – the mystery of Aki would have to keep; I was happy enough to live in the present.

The pre-dawn early Spring air had a bite of chill to it, but it felt invigorating as Shingen and I picked our way along a path behind the castle. Our feet were splashed with dew and wet blades of grass clung to my toes. The birds were just awakening, and their nesting songs serenaded our short hike.
Shingen had whispered me into wakefulness less than twenty minutes ago, and without allowing me to do more than throw on an extra robe, had taken me by the hand and led me out here, saying he was fulfilling a promise he’d made to me a long time ago.
He’d refused to give any more details, but since he had my blanket – the one he had stolen from me at the lake – slung across his shoulders, I was pretty certain I knew where we were headed…
The field of spring wildflowers filled the landscape, their ‘faces’ turned toward the horizon, where a pink-purple sky was lightening with the sunrise. It was like walking into an impressionist painting.
After spreading the blanket on the ground, Shingen wrapped his arms around me as he guided me to a seat. “You’re not too cold are you?”
I shook my head. Though the air was a bit chilly, I wasn’t cold sitting close to Shingen. “You’re nice and toasty. It helps.”
I leaned against him, warmed more by his presence than the actual heat of his body. He picked a flower, stuck it randomly in my hair, then grinned and repeated the action a few more times. “My nature Goddess, ready to greet the sunrise.”
“You promoted me from devil?” One of the flowers dislodged and hovered over my eye. I caught it before it fell and tickled his nose with it.
“Devil, Angel, Goddess… it’s all you.” His hands slid inside my robes and eased them down my shoulders. “I love all your identities.”
My brief thought of ‘what if someone comes by and sees us’ was followed by the knowledge that Shingen would have taken that into consideration and planned to avoid that. There were a lot of perks to being involved with a strategist. “All of my identities love you too.”
As he shrugged out of his clothing, a tiny movement at the edge of the blanket caught my attention. It was a caterpillar inching its way across the field. I let it crawl onto my finger then ferried it over to the stem of a nearby flower. Otherwise, it was likely to get squished in a few moments. “There you go,” I told it, though of course, it would have no idea what I said, or perhaps even hear me.
“What’s that, Devil?” Shingen claimed my attention again and drew me to him.
“Pre-butterfly.” Then all thoughts of the caterpillar’s future left my head, as Shingen kissed the hollow of my neck, and I gasped, just as I always did when he kissed me there.
The sun was just barely peeking at us over the horizon when Shingen carefully guided me onto him. “I knew you’d look beautiful clad in the sky, Katsuko.” He wrapped his arms around my waist, and we began to move together into a new day.
Into a future.

CODA: AKI
Not too far outside Kasugayama, Akihira paused when he heard rustling in the trees above. Although he couldn’t see who was up there, he had been expecting this encounter, so he waited patiently until the ninja flipped down into his path and drew his sword.
“No need for that, Mr. Mikumo.” Mentally, Aki sighed. Prior to his relocation into the Sengoku timeline… or timelines, as the case was now, Mikumo Sasuke had been a quiet student, intent on his studies. The Kenshin-trained ninja version of him was somewhat jarring, no matter which timeline Aki encountered him in. “I suspected you’d make an appearance sooner or later.”
“Er. Right then.” Sasuke took off his mask and put away his weapon. “Here I was feeling rather proud of myself for figuring out that you would spend a few days watching over Katsuko before you left.”
“I have the advantage of knowing several versions of yourself,” Akihira pointed out. “Though none of you are completely identical, you’re all intelligent enough to have determined my location.” Then, as Sasuke appeared poised to let loose a torrent of questions, he added, “I am not able to discuss anything specific to the multiverse – some of that is to try to avoid a paradox, and some things I simply do not know.”
Sasuke made an annoyed sound. “That eliminates the majority of my questions.” He pushed his glasses further up his nose. “Katsuko believes that the boy who fell in the river was important – are you able to tell me anything more about him?”
Akihira paused. Discussing Hikosane was a grey area – but the current crisis was nothing like any of them had ever encountered. “He’s not magical. He’s not a future Emperor, or even a future daimyo – at least not in most timelines. He is simply needed to survive his childhood, because for whatever reason, he is, as Katsuko might say, the butterfly.”
“Ugh.” Sasuke shuddered.
Right. Akihira had momentarily forgotten that Sasuke was afraid of butterflies. “Someone doesn’t want him to survive and has been going into various timelines to make sure he doesn’t. Timelines in which Hikosane otherwise would have lived.”
“And my original future was one in which he survived.” It wasn’t posed as a question – Sasuke had grasped the essence of the situation. “How did you-”
Aki held up his hand. “Will you accept that in another timeline there is a version of you that has the answer to these questions?”
“I’m sensing that I don’t have a choice.” Sasuke reached into his kimono, then withdrew a modern envelope. “In that case, I’ll proceed to a non-timeline related question.” He pulled a photo out of the envelope and handed it to Akihira. “Why didn’t you tell her?”
Akihira automatically glanced at the photo, then caught his breath when he saw her face. Sometimes simply seeing an unexpected picture, had that effect on him, even though he had become somewhat used to seeing her face on their children. The picture had been taken at a party – he couldn’t even recall the occasion. In those days, Francisco had regularly thrown parties for the lab staff, to as he said in his broken Japanese, “To blow the steam.”
Although Sasuke’s parents hadn’t officially been part of the project, they’d been extremely helpful in obtaining archival data on the Sengoku period – Francisco must have invited them. Sasuke’s mother had been somewhat of an amateur photographer in those days and lugged a Nikon everywhere. She must have snapped this candid of himself and Mayumi, capturing an intimate moment of a relationship that had lasted less than a year. One year, in the hudreds that he had travelled across. Not much time comparatively. But. Enough.
“Katsuko looks a lot like her mother,” Sasuke commented, breaking a silence that had grown while Akihira gazed at the photo. “Though once I knew to look for it, there is a resemblance to you as well, especially her eyes.”
“When I left your time period,” Akihira said, then cursed his wording because he knew Sasuke would pick up on the phrase ‘your time period.’ “I did not know Mayumi was pregnant.”
“That… is something you ought to discuss with Katsuko. And Toshiie, I imagine. However… why didn’t you… and give her that, um, Cloud City moment?” Sasuke held his glance.
Trust Sasuke to find a mediated reference. “In some of the other timelines, I’ve told her… or she  discovered it through other means. It’s… rarely turned out well. She’s happy here. She’ll be happier not knowing. I’ve run simulations in enough timelines in the multiverse to be certain of that.”
“Timelines… multiverse… simulations?” Sasuke cocked his head. “Less Darth Vader, more Dr. Strange, then.”
“If you persist in these sorts of comparisons, then I suppose that works as well as any other. I really must cut this conversation short, as I have places and times that need my attention.” Then, because it amused him to use Sasuke’s own tools against him, he tossed a few ground spikes and a smoke bomb on the ground. “Ker-vanish.”
By the time the smoke cleared Akihira had slipped into the forest. He planted his walking stick in the ground, and continued on his way, foot kicking a stone out of his path.
The stone bounced a short distance before colliding with another, which, in turn rolled off the path and landed near the base of a tree, disturbing a butterfly which had been resting on the trunk. The butterfly took off, winging its way toward the sky.

Thank you for joining me on the Throwback Thursday Reblog project! I had a lot of fun revisiting Shingen & Katsu's story... but as you can see, it's not quite over. There are two one-shot stories that I can reblog, and I will probably write other shorts with them. Also in this particular timeline, there is still a short story coming about Sute & Sasuke (.... & Yukimura). Plus... what really did happen in the lingerie store when Sasuke and Shingen went shopping... hmm?
Additionally due to the multiverse destabilizing, they do appear in the other Tempest in Time stories (including a yet to be published time jump to 1586), so we'll see them again.
I do plan on doing a Throw Back Thursday for A Mitsunari Night's Dream - but I'm going to wait until I finish posting the first run of Mitsuhide's story. It might be too confusing to see one version of Katsuko ("Okatsu") being romanced by Mitsunari, while another version of her (Kaya) is working with Mitsuhide to rescue Hideyoshi & Mai.
Anyway... wow, this ended up being a ten month project! Again, thank you for joining me on it. I'll miss my Thursday morning reblogs.
