A Shortie vs. Peregrine Falcon! by Debbie Meader
Via Flickr:
As the sun was just dipping below the horizon, there was some action above our heads! I was very surprised to see an incoming Peregrine Falcon attempting to take on a Short-eared Owl. The Shortie flipped upside down and opened his talons to protect himself. Photo taken at Shillapoo Lake, Vancouver, Washington.

Round 1, Poll 1
Pygmy Nuthatch vs Short-eared Owl
sources under cut
Pygmy Nuthatch Propaganda
"cute small"
"Pygmy Nuthatches are cooperative breeders: about one third of breeding pairs get help raising their young from 1–3 male relatives. These are often the breeding pair’s own sons from previous years; they help defend the nest and feed incubating females and chicks."
Their six-letter code is "PYGNUT", which is great to shout when you see them running around in the tree-tops
Short-eared Owl Propaganda
"it looks very Polite"
Prefers prairies and grasslands for habitat, and is typically considered the nighttime counterpart of the Northern Harrier (a type of hawk).
They make their own nest, which is not typical of owls.
"Short-eared Owls are loosely colonial breeders, normally seasonally monogamous. In courtship "sky dances," males perform aerial acrobatics accompanied by singing and wing-clapping."

Short-Eared Owl (asio flammeus)
Despite its name, the small tufts on the top of the Short-Eared Owl's head aren't actual ears. Like other owls, their real ears are located on the sides of their heads. They tend to tuft up these 'ears' when in a defensive position, possibly in an attempt to drive away what's scaring it - however, it just looks tremendously cute.
