Whumptober day 12- insomnia
This one is more of a wholesome one :) OK SO! Anyone remember Flower? A different Link oc? I talked about it a little bit ago, but you can go to his tag and see details about him and his Zelda there (there’s a lot more details than with Real). The jist of it is, that Flower was taken from his family when he was a baby since it was discovered that he was the hero. He was raised by the sages who all were either terrible or great. When Zelda’s parents died, Kaeru, the Sage of light, took control until Zelda was old enough. Kaeru is the main villain and he is the worst :) This was fun cuz I haven’t thought about his Zelda’s personality, so that was fun to explore. Anyways hope you enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Zelda rubbed her tired eyes as she skimmed through the magic books. The candle she had next to her was not emitting enough light for her to comfortably read without straining her eyes, and it hurt. Though it could possibly be from her being so tired that her eyes just naturally strained to read the small letters in front of her. She rubbed her eyes again and gave a sigh, the words not comprehending in her tired mind. She really should be sleeping, it was in the middle of the night, and she knew that if Impa caught her she would be in big trouble. But for some reason, instead of peaceful rest whenever she tried to lay down to sleep, she was met with tossing and turning, unable to shut her brain off to allow blissful dreaming. So instead of laying around in her bed, she decided to do something with her time. Kaeru was disappointed in her magical development so she figured she could try to study magic more. She groaned again and laid her head on the book she was reading, allowing her eyes to close and hoping that it meant that she was finally going to sleep. But once again, restlessness overcame her, and her body was refusing rest. Frustration caused tears to prick at her eyes as she wished so desperately to stop being awake. She almost started weeping right there when she suddenly heard a purr. She lifted her head and saw a cat staring at her on the table.
“Where– where did you come from?” She wondered out loud as the cat stretched across her books. She reached out timidly to pet the feline, but pulled back. She needed to focus.
“She loves pets, you know.”
Zelda spun around and saw a sleepy looking Link, with his little flower tangled up in his curls.
“Link! What are you doing in the library at this hour?”
“I should ask you the same thing, Zelda,” Link tilted his head and wandered over to where Zelda was sitting. “Are you reading?”
“I’m studying about magic.”
“Why?”
Zelda gave Link an annoyed look. “Because I need to get stronger.”
Link titled his head as he gave the cat head pats. “But you’re already strong.”
“No I’m not.”
“Yes you are! I’ve seen the way you trained with your magic. It’s amazing.”
Zelda pursed her lips, trying to keep the frustrated tears from forming in her eyes again. “Kaeru doesn’t think so.”
Link didn’t respond this time. A heaviness entered the air, and Zelda struggled to breathe from it. She stared hard at the pages, desperately trying to distract herself from the heavy silence. Suddenly, she felt a hand rest on hers, and she flinched away.
“S-sorry! I’m so sorry,” Link said quickly, withdrawing his own hand. “I shouldn’t have done that.”
“No, Link it’s alright I’m just… tired…”
“Then you should go to bed, Zelda.”
“I… I can’t, ok? I can’t sleep.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know! Insomnia or… something.”
Link sat up straight, realization on his face. “Oh. I thought you were forcing yourself to stay up late. I’m sorry Zelda.”
The princess looked down. “It’s alright. You didn’t know. Honestly if anyone saw me down here, they’d be worried about the same thing.”
Link gave a sad smile as he pet the cat. “Well, at least you’ll have Biscuit here to keep you company.”
“Biscuit?”
“That’s her name,” Link nodded his head towards the cat on the table. “I named her that.”
“Why—why did you name her Biscuit?” Zelda couldn’t hide the humor in her voice, why must Link always come up with cute names?
“Oh! Well it’s kind of a funny story,” Link bumped his head against Biscuit’s and looked at Zelda with a playful expression. “When she was a kitten, I watched her eat a full biscuit, all by herself! She left no crumbs!”
Zelda frowned. “Was she a small kitten? I don’t think that eating biscuits would be possible.”
“She wasn’t a tiny kitten, but she was still a kitten, much smaller than how she was now.”
Zelda hummed in a skeptical tone. “Are you sure she ate the whole thing?”
“Yes I’m sure! I saw it with my own eyes,” Link pointed at his bright blue eyes that were hiding behind his round glasses. “Do you doubt my eyes?” Zelda smirked and stole his glasses, putting them on herself.
“Yeah, I kind of do. Your eyesight is terrible.”
Link made an offended gasp, looking away dramatically.
“How could you, my trusted friend?” He exclaimed, waving his hands over his head as Biscuit watched them intently. Zelda giggled and took his glasses off, setting them down on the table.
“So I assume you named the other animals here then?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well,” Zelda brought up her fingers and started to count, “there’s that horse named ‘Pinecone’, the pig named ‘Stir Fry’, there was also a dog named ‘Scissors’, and lastly the blue cucco named ‘Nitrogen’?”
Link snorted. “I was a child when I named most of the animals, besides, you could never come up with something as great as those names.”
“You weren’t a child when you named the cucco. What is nitrogen anyways?”
Link shrugged. “I dunno, but it sounded like a cool name for him.”
Zelda giggled again and rested her head on the table. “How did you come up with the names?”
“You want to know?”
“The full story.”
Link smiled and got more comfortable. He began to tell the tale of Pinecone and Scissors, excitement in his tone whenever he got to the climax of the story. Zelda listened intently, watching his toothy grin whenever he recalled the memories, his blue eyes lighting up once he reached an exciting detail, his hands flying all over the place as he gestured what was happening. Zelda could watch him all night, but drowsiness hit her, and before she knew it, she had fallen asleep on the table.
Zelda woke up in the comfort of her bed. She sat up, confused. Wasn’t she just in the library? Had she fallen asleep? If so, how did she get up in her room? She lived in a tower, it wasn’t easy to get up there when exhausted. She recalled the night before and remembered Link talking to her. Did he… carry her up here? Her face grew hot and she buried her face in her hands. There’s no way that was a dream… oh goddesses.
She heard a meow next to her and she saw Biscuit curled up on the edge of her bed. She stared at Zelda with sleepy eyes, and the princess couldn’t help but give her some pets. Though she didn’t sleep for long, she felt much better than she had before. She didn’t know what it was about Link’s voice, but it put her to sleep. Maybe… she could have him talk to her before bed…?
Zelda shook her head. She couldn’t do that to him, he was busy himself, besides, she shouldn’t ask him to stay up simply because she struggled to sleep. But still…
Biscuit got up and stretched, getting closer to Zelda who was frowning at the blankets. She smiled when Biscuit got closer and she gave her a few more pets. Regardless of how she felt, she was still grateful that Link was there with her last night. And she was grateful that he carried her up to her room. She definitely needed to thank him for that, for everything. Ever since her parents died, it was easy for Zelda to feel alone, especially with Kaeru there, putting unbearable pressure on her shoulders. But whenever Link was there, he made it so much easier.
Goddesses she had so much to thank him for.
"So, I hear you're ......"
It was a thing they started to do
A bit of playful teasing about
Each other's ages
There's a year's difference
It started when one turned 20
The younger one going, "So, I hear you're 20!"
The older one would retort
"So, I hear you're 19!"
It happened again
Five years later
This teasing betwixt sisters
So, I hear you're 25!"
"So I hear you're 24!"
Five years became ten
"So, I hear you're 35!"
"So I hear you're 34!"
And then five again
"So, I hear you're 40!~"
"So I hear you're 39!"
This would continue
Five years more
"So, I hear you're 45!"
"So, I hear you're 44!"
Playful ribbing
As the years passed
As their hair started to gray
So, I hear you're 60!"
"So I hear you're 59!"
Teasing each other
About their respective ages
With only a year's difference
"So, I hear you're 80!"
"So, I hear you're 79!"
Until the very end
"Hey, Sis, so, I hear you're…."
She couldn't bring herself to finish
Not at first, no, but she could bring herself to smile
The memories of their ribbing came back
"Hey, Sis, so, I hear you're 102!"
And she heard her sister's voice go
"And, so, I hear you're 101!"
Xiuxiu pauses at the end of the alleyway, eyeing the man guarding the warehouse door. He doesn't look like he's pulled three all-nighters in a row. Doesn't look like he's fazed at all by the early morning sunlight shining straight into his face.
But that's the thing about him. He's a horrible actor when it came to some things - like pretending to be incompetent. But years of training taught him to hide boredom and loneliness and exhaustion.
He isn't so good about hunger, but he's resolved that with a cup of instant rice porridge. It's probably empty now - he eats fast, like he'll never get more - but he pretends he's casually sipping. Or maybe he just keeps forgetting it's empty?
Really, it's high time Wang Can learns to delegate. She walks forward, Touba behind her shifting nervously, breakfast box in hand. He'll take over guard duty, give the idiot a chance to eat, to sleep and - maybe, just maybe - let that overly tight coil inside him relax for a while.
After all, she couldn't have her Chief of Security collapse from overwork. No matter how dedicated he might be.
