It begins with a tremor, a realization that love happens in the fragile context of our mortality. That love and life occur just beyond the reach of our control. There is only one letter of difference between love and lose, and somewhere along the way, for me they became synonymous.
I love the concept of sky islands. They mean so much to me. Cool floating rocks, shattered worlds, actually a giant creature. All of them.
and they make for such cool world building. Is it a past or future earth, is the tech level just flying pirates or basically space ships, does magic exist here in some form or is it mostly normal with the sky providing other things to the setting.
I think I have to credit Skylands (not skylanders) for kindling my love. And establishing my thoughts on every setting I’ve seen since.
mostly “where is the water and energy coming from?”
While skylands had a nebulous power system that was basically having people be lucario from Pokémon, but solar powered, Storm hawks on the other hand provided quite a clear power system for most of its run, and also answered the resources question with one word. Crystals.
more recently, the game merchant of the skys lends a low magic setting, focusing on trading.
look. Island are great. They allow for societies to grow and adapt in an isolated pocket, and adding floating to that just make cool visuals and interesting questions.
My second favorite road trip I’ve taken with my family so far is probably the trip we took from Georgia to Maine. Our first stop on the trip was in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I feel like this national park gets overlooked a lot, but if you’ve never been here you definitely should add it to your list because it is absolutely beautiful! We explored the park for a little while before getting…
Aron Cortes, Captain of the Saint Nazaire and the resistance’s leader. Spends more time resisting strangling 16 year old boys who won’t follow orders or display a shred of common sense. Cautious to a fault, he seems more focused on keeping his people safe than mounting anything close to a formidable assault on the Sphere. That being said, if he or his ship ever get boxed into a corner and he’s got no other options look out because he’ll come out swinging.
As I can now draw I’m having a go at some of my fav characters from years ago.
I don’t know how many people remember Skyland. It was very visually pretty, had its moments (much like Cortes) but was overall kind of terribly executed. Characterisation was generally terrible, particularly when they focused on characters that were there for five minutes but the main characters just got almost forgotten. Don’t get me started on Lena. Hinted at what sounded like some really interesting backstory but never fleshed it out which was dumb cause the main story went nowhere.
