The Man with the Twisted Lip
There were probably a couple of opium dens in London, but they were far common in France or the western United States.
London Bridge was the easternmost fixed crossing a vehicle could use in 1889. Tower Bridge was under construction and the Thames Tunnel was used by trains by this point. The latter still is, part of the London Overground. So, it was ferries east of that.
The wharves and docks stretched (mostly) on the north of the river east of London Bridge to Beckton. There were some smaller older quays to the west, like the now Hays Galleria shopping area. The docks at Tilbury also existed and they would take over as ships got bigger, leading to the gradual closure of the old docks, deprivation and then gentrification.
London's Chinatown consisted of less than a thousand residents and was in Limehouse. It is now in Soho, an area that was historically a red-light district but is mostly gentrified now, with a somewhat larger population due to immigration from Hong Kong.
The East End had a reputation as "a wretched hive of scum and villainy" fuelled by stories like this (also the Ripper murders of 1888), but was mainly just very poor. Slum clearance efforts were beginning, but not in any coordinated or effective manner at this point.
Threadneedle Street, in the City of London, is best known as the location of the Bank of England.
Lee was a middle-class suburb that sat on the edge of London in 1889; it had just been taken from Kent and incorporated into the new County of London. But suburban residents in London will still frequently identify with traditional counties.
However, the massive expansion of the city in the first half of the 20th century put Lee in inner London and it today sits in Zone 3 for public transport fares. Indeed, the opening of the railway station in 1866 is what made Lee a desirable area and it still is.
Bow Street police station was a famous police station in London, sharing the building with an equally famous magistrate's court - the building was pretty new, finished in 1881, but the Bow Street Runners before that (set up in 1749 by judge and author of Tom Jones Henry Fielding) were the first effective law enforcement force in London. The former closed in 1992, the latter in 2006 and there is now a museum on site.
"Hugh Boone" would have been charged and fined for breaking the Vagrancy Act of 1824, a piece of Georgian-era legislation enacted because the British government decided that the best way to deal with a surge in poverty and homelessness after the Napoleonic Wars, along with a massive internal influx of economic migrants, was to make rough sleeping and begging illegal, with a maximum sentence of a month's hard labour. This act also covered prostitution, but was in practice mostly used against gay men.
The act remains on the statute books, albeit heavily amended - and somtimes used against homeless people; with 114 people charged in Greater London in 2019-2020. The currently Tory government has pledged to repeal the act and passed legislation in 2022 that will allow for that once a replacement act is enacted to cover some of the other offences in the still-extant text, like hiring children as beggars.

President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the slum priest who became his country's first democratically elected president, resigned today under intense pressure from the United States and the threat of an invasion of the capital by armed insurgents[...]
President Bush ordered the deployment of the Marines to Haiti as part of an "interim international force" to restore order. Both France and Canada have agreed to send troops, too. The United Nations Security Council met in emergency session to consider a resolution for a multinational force.
Mr. Aristide was once hailed as the man who could deliver peace and freedom to his nation, a slave nation that liberated itself 200 years ago from its imperial oppressor only to stifle under a blanket of strife and poverty. But his presidency crumbled as he violently cracked down on political dissent and armed rebels seized Haiti's north this month. The Bush administration, which had earlier been reluctant to suggest that an elected president step down, has shifted its stance over the past several days, increasing the pressure and finally strongly urging him to step down.[...]
James Foley, the United States ambassador to Haiti, said that an international force consisting of security, aid and administrative personnel "will rapidly be in Haiti" to help stabilize the country. Violent clashes between government supporters and armed militants have left as many as 100 people dead since early this month[...]
In sending the Marines to Haiti, Mr. Bush said: "The government believes it is essential that Haiti have a hopeful future. This is the beginning of a new chapter."
About 50 Canadian soldiers provided security at the airport in Port-au-Prince today, assisting a Hercules transport to fly Canadians out of the country to the Dominican Republic. Canadian officials promised today that they would provide further military assistance as part of an international force.
In Paris, French government officials said tonight that France, the first country to demand Mr. Aristide's resignation, was ready to participate in an international peace force in Haiti, but would await definition of the force's mandate by the United Nations Security Council. France also said it would send aid.[...]
American policy toward Mr. Aristide shifted swiftly. In July, Brian Dean Curran, then the United States ambassador here, said, "The United States accepts President Aristide as the constitutional president of Haiti for his term of office ending in 2006."
But the Bush administration decided in the past three days, as a senior administration official said Saturday, that "Aristide must go."

The Legacy Of J. Dilla Streaming On FX & Unheard Music Released Via Kano
youtube
The Legacy of J. Dilla is making its debut on the FX network tonight. The New York Times documentary about the late hip-hop producer explores Dilla's ingenuity as a beatmaker, the history of his Conant Gardens neighborhood and the various conflicts over his estate. Dilla died in 2006 at age 32 after battling a rare blood disease. At the time he was a budding underground legend having worked with Erykah Badu, Busta Rhymes, The Roots, D'Angelo and Common. He also founded his own group Slum Village and used his beats to elevate several local rappers from Detroit including Phat Kat, Frank-N-Dank and others.  The producer's career took a different turn after R&B veteran Amp Fiddler introduced him to Q-Tip after a fated interaction during a Lollapalooza tour. Since his passing, he's been talked about heavily among rap connoisseurs, beat junkies and producers. The general public is still unaware of his contributions and the documentary is a way to commemorate his work and introduce him to those who still don't connect the sounds to his name. DJ Jazzy Jeff is in the film deconstructing Dilla's methodology that still mystifies the most initiated beatsmiths to this day.
The James Yancy estate has made a deal with Kano, the company responsible for the STEM player to release unheard music from Dilla over the next 10 years. The 20 songs are being released alongside the film. Fans can listen to the music on the STEM player which allows the songs to be remixed and the mixes can be shared online. The STEM player costs $200 and a monthly subscription is $1.94. The Legacy of J. Dilla will debut on FX and can be watched later on Hulu.

J Dilla: Lo-Fi Godfather
Tumblr media
J Dilla started his career in the early 1990s as a member of the group Slum Village. He quickly established himself as a talented producer and rapper, and soon became one of the most sought-after producers in the hip hop community. J Dilla's unique sound was characterized by his innovative use of samples, his intricate drum patterns, and his ability to seamlessly blend elements of soul, jazz, and funk into his beats. He was also known for his creative use of sound effects, such as tape hiss and crackling samples, which gave his music a raw, unpolished feel that was both nostalgic and futuristic.
J Dilla's influence on modern day beatmaking can be seen in the way that he transformed hip hop production. He was a pioneer in the use of sampling and layering, which he combined with his technical skills to produce beats that were ahead of their time. J Dilla's innovative approach to music production inspired countless musicians and producers to push the boundaries of what was possible in hip hop production. Many of today's top hip hop producers, including Madlib, Jazzy Jeff, and 9th Wonder, cite J Dilla as a major influence on their work.
J Dilla's impact on modern day beatmaking can also be seen in the way that he blended old and new elements in his music. He was known for his use of soul and jazz samples, which he expertly blended with his beats to create a sound that was both nostalgic and futuristic. This fusion of old and new elements, along with his signature sound, made J Dilla a cult figure in the hip hop community, who have continued to pay homage to his legacy through their music.
In addition to his impact on hip hop production, J Dilla was also a pioneering figure in the lo-fi musical genre. Lo-fi, which stands for low-fidelity, refers to a style of music production that emphasizes a raw, unpolished sound. J Dilla's use of tape hiss, crackling samples, and other elements of vintage recording techniques gave his music a unique and intimate feel that inspired a generation of lo-fi artists. Today, the lo-fi genre has become one of the most popular and influential musical styles, and J Dilla is remembered as one of its pioneers.
J Dilla's impact on modern day beatmaking and music production cannot be overstated. He was a visionary who pushed the boundaries of hip hop production and created a sound that was both innovative and timeless. Through his music, he left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire musicians and producers around the world, cementing his place as one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time.
Despite his untimely death in 2006, J Dilla's legacy continues to live on. His music has been re-released and remastered, and new generations of hip hop fans are discovering his work for the first time. J Dilla's influence can also be seen in the way that hip hop production has evolved over the years, with many of today's top producers drawing on his innovations and incorporating his signature.

SO BASICALLY Bombay Dreams is an Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced musical that first opened in the West End and then on Broadway a few years later (early 2000s, this all happens 2002-2006). He got some solid South Asian folks to work on it, like AR Rahman, Farah Khan, and Meera Syal (but it did not have a wholly South Asian creative team). Chaiyya Chaiyya from Dil Se is a part of the show (so is Ishq Bina, Rangeela Re, Manna Madurai, Shakalaka Baby, Sona Nahi Na Sahi, and Nahin Samne... all from their respective movies). It also went through changes as it crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Up until Shoba Narayan was in Great Comet, Bombay Dreams was the only time there had been a South Asian lead actress on Broadway.
As for the plot, it was changed multiple times, but part of the plot at one point was that it deals with the changing of Bombay to Mumbai, and a poor guy that lives in a slum who falls in love with a rich girl (who! is! engaged!) whose father is a Bollywood director.
It's half jukebox musical, half original songs.
I recall finding a source that mentioned how Farah did not feel like Bombay Dreams was very representative of South Asian identities and experiences, and thus, on a piece of Andrew Lloyd Webber's letterhead, Om Shanti Om was born :)
This is so fucking funny I love this. Farah Khan was so pissed off about the shitty musical she had to do she decided to just write a better one. Queen behavior.

Been pestering a friend with thoughts while I’m watching Star Wars in sequential order (at his request) so I figured it’d be fun to pester all of y’all too!
For starters, Phantom Menace!
Can’t skip the opening crawl!
👁️👄👁️ “are you an angel?”
pov u are the queen of Naboo dealing with a planetary crisis slumming it on some nowhere planet while your people are dying cuz the trade federations are legally culling your people and the space knights in charge of you and your lookalikes need to stop cuz the ship ur in is damaged cuz u need to get to the senate to endure endless debates about basic fucking decency and this is the first person willing to help with NO preamble, NO understanding of your rank, just a kind little slave boy and his kind mother on this nowhere planet filled with bounty hunters and slaves and space mafia
If I was Padme I would’ve bonded with him too honestly
Love the complete tone shift we’re getting right near the start
Wonder why they went with “Anakin has no dad” concept.
Why is mauls voice so damn SMOOTH??? Like sir said “𝐼𝓉 𝓌𝒾𝓁𝓁 𝒷𝑒 𝒹𝑜𝓃𝑒 𝓂𝓎 𝓁𝑜𝓇𝒹.”
Oh you thought this was a space opera? NAW BITCH ITS CARS (2006)
God no matter how I look at it the CG doesn’t get any better hhhhngh

Pretty good tactic to have Actual Queen not dressed in garb while Fake Queen is. Good tactic Amidala!
FUCK
Hey, episode 4 callback!
“Hey obi wan I know I’m dying n all, but could you take care of that kid we both just met? Yea he’s the chosen one btw”
God no wonder anakin fell; I couldn’t imagine people only keeping me around cuz I’m the chosen one

A standoff between a powerful gang federation and Haiti’s government is testing how much power both sides wield and threatens to further derail a paralyzed country where millions of people are struggling to find fuel and water.
A former police officer who leads a gang alliance known as “G9 and Family” has proposed his own plan for Haiti’s future — even seeking seats in the Cabinet — while demanding that the administration of Prime Minister Ariel Henry grant amnesty and void arrest warrants against the group’s members, a demand that so far has gone unanswered.
In mid-September, the gang surrounded a key fuel terminal to demand Henry’s resignation and to protest a spike in petroleum prices after the prime minister announced that his administration could no longer afford to subsidize fuel.
That move, coupled with thousands of protesters who have blocked streets in the capital of Port-au-Prince and other major cities, has caused major shortages [...]
In a recent video posted on Facebook, G9 and Family leader Jimmy Cherizier, who goes by the nickname “Barbecue,” read a proposed plan to stabilize Haiti that includes the creation of a “Council of Sages” with one representative from each of Haiti’s 10 departments.[...]
Henry and 18 members of his Cabinet appealed nearly a week ago for the deployment of foreign troops to quell violence and end the fuel blockade, a proposal that has yet to be formally discussed by the United Nations Security Council, which meets on Monday.
The gang, which has overpowered an understaffed and under-resourced police department, is likely wary of the potential deployment of specialized armed troops, Fatton said. [...]
Gang demands are nothing new in Haiti, and they have grown more powerful since the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.
But such threats were quickly quelled in the past with the help of U.N. peacekeeping forces, Fatton said.
In the aftermath of a rebellion that ousted former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, then-President Réné Préval ordered gangs to lay down their weapons. He did it peacefully at first, but upon receiving no results, he threatened them.[...]
He said special forces used drones and invaded slums, which gangs have long controlled.
But gangs have played major political roles before: The leader of one gang helped launch the revolt that removed Aristide, who refused to resign before the end of his term in 2006. That leader, Butteur Metayer, had been an Aristide supporter, but turned against him after his brother, also a gang leader, was killed in 2003.[...]
Haitian officials have warned the international community that the situation is dire, noting that a recent cholera outbreak could also worsen due to the limited availability of water and other basic supplies.
On Friday, UNICEF warned that nearly 100,000 children younger than 5 are already suffering from severe acute malnutrition and are vulnerable to cholera[...]

Every week in June, CBS News Detroit is highlighting a different part of Detroit's Black music scene and showcasing the role that Detroit played in shaping generations of performers and its impact on broader American culture.
This week, Amyre Makupson, our Executive Producer Impacting Communities, sits down with Detroit hip-hop pioneers Slum Village.
Slum Village is known for their lyricism and underground sound. Today, the group is all about keeping their legacy alive.
T3 is the sole remaining original member.
Slum Village has had many members throughout its 20 years. Before it was Slum Village, it was known as Ssenepod - dopeness spelled backward - and the group consisted of Dilla, T3, Que D, Baatin and Wajeed. After Ssenepod broke up, then came Slum Village in 1996, formed by J Dilla, Baatin and T3.
In 1998, they landed their first record deal with Barak/AM Records. From there, they released albums such as "Fan-Tas-Tic (Vol. 1)" and "Fantastic (Vol. 2)."
When J Dilla left the group in 2001 to focus on his solo career, Elzhi stepped in and became a part of popular albums such as "Trinity (Past, Present and Future)" and "Detroit Dell (A Taste of Detroit)," which included the hit single "Selfish" and featured Kanye West and John Legend.
Today, T3 is joined by producer Young RJ., who joined the lineup in 2012 after producing for the group since 2001. J Dilla died in 2006 of cardiac arrest, and Baatin, who left in 2003 and rejoined in 2008, died in 2009.
With two decades' worth of music behind them, Slum Village considers its albums influential to the younger generation today.
The group was recently named one of Billboard's 50 Greatest Rap Groups of All Time. Slum Village is releasing a new shoe collaboration with Puma in summer 2023 and is currently shooting a self-produced docuseries.
