Something we don’t talk enough about is the fact that the folklaw of the paopu fruit isn’t inherently romantic (And before I go any further I want to make clear that this is not trying to discredit ships or claim kairi and sora are not in love. You ship what you ship and I’ll ship what I ship and never the two shall interfere.).

The fact of the matter is, that what we hear about the folk law of the fruit is this:

“If two people share one, their destinies become intertwined. They’ll remain a part of each others lives no matter what.” - Riku, KH1

NOW! I am aware that within the context of the scene rRku is teasing sora over his crush on Kairi - anyone with eyes could see that. However, despite the obvious romantic ideal of having a shared destiny, it is not a wholly romance based idea.

You could share the fruit with just about anyone you knew if you wanted to be in their lives forever. Say, a best friend or a family member, or a particularly precious family pet.

Anyone you wanted to stay with, you could share one with.

Which raises a question about this mystical fruit. Is it’s sharing symbolic in KH law or is Namora really out here basing the entirety of sora’s connection to his friends on the basis of -what essentially boils down to- a magical star shaped mango?

The way I see it is that Sora’s intention to share the Paopu with Kairi can absolutely be read as romantic. The narrative clues are there, we can see them. However, arguably Sora has just as much reason to share the paopu with all of his friends as he does with her.

His fate is so intrinsically intertwined with that of ventus, Roxas and Xion, That he could share one with them. He has deep connections with Donald and Goofy, that he holds incredibly dear to him. After all his friends are his power, his strength to carry on. So he could share one with them.

He spent so long looking for, finding, loosing, and looking all over again for Riku, that he has every reason to share one with his best friend, even if it simply means never loosing sight of him again.

Sora’s motivations to share one with kairi may stem from romance, but that doesn’t make the law of the fruit specifically romantic.

In a way the paopu fruit is a bit like a pinky swear. It’s a promise to never loose sight of the other person and to share their destiny with the other person.

Perhaps the magic goes simply as deep as the intention of sharing one or the visualisation. Perhaps in simply handing a person the fruit with the intent to share is enough to bind one another.

The only three people that we ever see holding the fruit are Kairi, Sora and Riku. Perhaps that is where the bond starts.

In KH 1 Riku throws the fruit to Sora, who catches it. That is, in itself an act of sharing. In the cave sora draws himself feeding kairi and she then draws herself feeding him. That is an intent to share.

Therefore, by this logic, Sora is inextricably linked to both of them. Because they, all three, passed the fruit/ visualised passing the fruit to another.

And I can hear you say, ah yes, but flo, Riku and Kairi never shared a paopu in any capacity. And, dear reader you’d be right. However, they both shared one in different capacities with Sora, and thus are both linked to him, and by extension each other.

Now, Riku and Kairi are a odd little conundrum that has often bothered me. They are friends, they obviously care for one and other. And in KH1 it’s clear that there’s a little bit of show boating going on between the boys as to who can impress Kairi more.

Its something Naminé plays on in CoM, and it’s obvious that at one point or another, Riku’s priorities were the same as Sora’s. Protect Kairi. Yet, there is an extremely noticeable point at which that changes.

That place being Rikus journey in CoM. It is here that Riku shifts his focus from protecting Kairi to protecting Sora.

There are many reasons and possible theories for this. If your are on this app as frequently as I think you are then you probably know about most of them. So I’m not going to delve too deep into that one.

The point remains though, that Kairi and Riku’s destinies both diverge/ and converge at the same time. On the one hand, they diverge as Riku moves his focus from protecting her and making up for his actions as Ansam’s puppet; while simultaneously converging on one single fixed point that is their only meaningful connection to each other for the entire story.

Sora.

He is what binds them together, he is their destiny and he is what intertwined their destiny’s with each other.

Sora -as mushy as it sounds- is their star shaped fruit. They chose to share the paopu with him and thus inadvertently shared him between them. They both hold a piece of his destiny and his heart. Regardless of what you ship that can’t be denied.

Because the folk law of the paopu fruit is not an inherently romantic.

THE NAME

Why sokai??? Sorkai sounds 10 times better. Sokai reminds me of Ahsoka from Star Wars and ahsokai sounds like a much better ship then sokai in all honesty. Note I don't know dick about Star Wars but I did look it up and in Clone Wars she's like 17 so I mean if Star Wars gets confirmed for KH4 depending on the time it takes place I might hop on that shit. I think in the current Star Wars time (aka the Ahsoka TV show) she's like 47 or something so not then but who knows.

Again, don't know dick about Star Wars so all this imformation could very well be wrong but who knows

Appearance Headcanons:

⚝ The boy has gotten tall. He had quite the growth spurt, so he's shot up from his KH3 height of 5'10 to a quite lofty 6'3". ⚝ He's also put on quite a bit of muscle. He's spent a lot of time training in the past two years, so his arms are quite beefy and his stomach is noticeably cut. ⚝ He hasn't cut his hair in the past two years, so it's gotten very long, all the way down to mid back. He's only cut his bangs when needed to keep seeing, so they're also rather long and not quite even. ⚝ Riku has a noticeable scar on the outside of his left wrist where his barrier broke and he took most of the damage from Roxas's keyblade. ⚝ He also has a quite noticeable scar on the left side of his midback going around his left hip from where Xemnas hit him so hard with a laser sword he bent into a c shape. ⚝ Riku does have a slightly stiff way of walking due to the above injury, but finds it easier to move if he just takes the time to do stretches and warmups before he heads out.

General Headcanons:

⚝ Riku has a small bit of dysmorphia from having been Ansem for a bit. His body just doesn't quite feel right, like it doesn't fully belong to him. This has lessened as he's gotten older and taller, but it's brought with it new issues. He doesn't like that there's a resemblance between himself and Ansem, or at least he feels that there is. ⚝ His favourite food of all time is fish. Any kind of fish. Baked fish, fried fish, fish roasted on a stick over a bonfire at the beach... He could eat his body weight in fish and still find room for more. ⚝ He has a bit of a sweet tooth, but when he was younger he tried to act cooler and more mature than he was, leading to him claiming that he hated anything sweet. He's too embarrassed now to say he lied, so he still tries to hide his sweet tooth from others. ⚝ A lot of people think he likes spicy food, but his tolerance for spice is lower than you would think. He just suffered through it because he needed to seem tough. ⚝ His father was a fisherman who was lost at sea when he was young, before the events of Birth By Sleep, leaving himself and his mother behind. This is why it's Sora's dad who rows him and Sora out to the play island and not his own dad. ⚝ On the same note of parents, his mother became emotionally distant and even neglectful at times, focusing all of herself into her work as a ballet instructor. The only time she seemed to really pay Riku attention was when teaching, so he did several years of ballet training under her. ⚝ This is why he latched onto Maleficent as a mother figure and trusted her so much, and this is also why he later latched onto King Mickey as a father figure. ⚝ Not so much a headcanon as actual canon, but Riku is immune to the corrupting power of darkness now. ⚝ He taught himself to cook and is pretty good at the basics, though don't expect anything too fancy.

Relationship Headcanons:

⚝ Riku grew very protective of Sora as a child after losing his father and having his mother begin to grow distant, as Sora was his "last important person left". ⚝ This bloomed into a crush, though he wasn't sure what it was. When Kairi arrived on the islands he began to have similar feelings for her, which just confused Riku all the more. ⚝ He grew jealous of both Sora and Kairi for the same reasons, that he felt both were taking the other away from him, that he was somehow being pushed out. It hurt him far more that it felt like he was losing Sora, however, so he got a lot more upset and violent when anything had to do with Sora. ⚝ During his time in the old mansion while wearing Ansem's face Riku decided to take on a more supportive role from the background, and essentially became the biggest Sorkai shipper as a result. He was going to be a supportive big brother, dammit! ⚝ His feelings for Sora began growing stronger, while his ones for Kairi faded to more sibling-like thoughts, but the boy is in deep denial at the moment. ⚝ He went just a little overboard trying to protect Kairi and Naminé while Sora was missing. He couldn't lose anyone else important after all, and he had made the other him a promise.

Favorite character: Xemnas and Axel are my top 2, but Xemnas is my fave. Least Favorite character: I never liked Yen Sid.

Character I find most attractive: Ansem SoD was built attractive, especially in KH1.

a random thought: What if Sora cound use Final Fantasy summons?

An unpopular opinion: Master Xehanort as a whole isn’t a bad villain, but he did get messed up by some of the writing in later games.

My Canon OTP: I am a Xehaqus believer, but only because of drama and the fact that it seems like something Nomura would make canon if he had the chance.

My Non-canon OTP: Idk cause I don’t do ships like that.

Most Badass Character: Axel. Without a doubt.

Most Epic Villain: Xemnas, no question.

Pairing I am not a fan of: literally any of the ships that straight up make no sense AT ALL or are just plain… weird.

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Kairi after KH1 deserved better.

Favourite Friendship: I like the Sea Salt Trio’s dynamic a lot, but the Destiny Trio have the best friendship in the series.

Character I most identify with: Apprentice Xehanort/Terranort for reasons that are unrelated to mad science.

My kingdom hearts ships really just have become yes.

I straight up made this list because at somepoint imma draw these ships whether it's aus or not.

I like Sornami this I don't know why but I always felt Sora have more chemistry with Namine even if it's based off fake memories for the first half. But also I'm still slightly prefer them with others as well.

Love soriku there's no question their I reblog it like alot the ship has stuck with me sense kh2. And hasn't ever left. But other than that I'm a sucker for friends to lovers troop and this was the first friends to rivals to enemies to friends to loves. I'm not one who normally like rivals to lovers or enemies to lovers but this ship opened that up for me especially with how Riku tries so hard to redeem himself for Sora when he doesn't even have to.

Sorkai in kh 1 is great but shaky about it later on especially with reading the novels and looking at the translation of kh 3 also cause I think Kairi deserves better than how Sora treats her sometimes. It's like she's an after thought sometimes and it sucks.

Now Kairi with anyone else is higher then sorkai like roxiri, vankai, venkai, namikai, xion x kairi and sometimes and this is really just sometimes Odette x Kairi. I love all the ships and how their concepts could be.

I love namixi, rokunami, rokunamixi (ot3 like I think it'd be wholesome if they all were together and caring for eachother), rokushi these just are wholesome regardless of how you look at them.

Repliku and Namine I don't really ship Riku in Namine because I think Nomura shot that down instantly by changing the cutscene but also I liked the idea of Riku treating Namine, Kairi and Xion all similar sense he tends to interact slightly similar with each of them. But Repliku and Namine is both sad and wholesome it's probably due to the biased I have for liking the fan made trio with her the lost trio.

Vanami and Vankai so I got a reason for liking these two ships one the concept of Vanitas probably seeing Kairi as weak (in his eyes) or something but growing and interested in her for standing up and facing him despite that. Maybe they'd start off at odds not liking eachother or Vanitas being interesting while Kairi just sees him as a threat. The difference with Namine is I think he'd slightly mellow out not to much but find the fact she can manipulate memories fascinating. Maybe she reaches out wanting to help him even if he's full on darkness she probably would want to help like with Repliku but this time she feels she can is in more control to.

Okay okay the ships Namikai so I liked the aspect of how when they connected they have a light connection not to say that means anything but when Kairi needed someone Namine came in kh 2 and understood her like no one else even if she is technically a form of her Namine develops into her own person outside of Kairi and I just think it's wholesome which ever way you see it platonic or romantic.

Xion and Kairi I think in Xions case this ship is interesting to say the least not that it's bad just sense Xion in that weird grey area, she's Kairi, Sora and Riku at the sametime she develops on her own but still was the memories of Sora of Kairi and possibly Riku as well (cause why else did she experience a memorie only Riku has) so I guess she could have feelings for Kairi off Sora's memories of her but then again as she developed and Kairi slowly grow feelings over her seeing Xion becoming stronger despite her struggles.

I weirdly like Kairi and Strelitzia as a concept it's cute and I feel like wholesome from most comics or people who've talked about it. They tend to have wholesome ideas.

Venkai okay this one is just yes for me while her time away from Sora and training with Aqua she could get to learn not only combat but that she doesn't have to mimic others. From Kairi in Melody of memories in the Japanese translation she seems to blame herself slightly about Sora's death but not only that but from her combat in kh 3 it mimics mainly Sora's but with some of Riku. With Kairi's character constantly trying to catch up to both I feel like with time she lost a bit of herself due to that. From not finding her own way to train or fight that's why I think not only with the training from Aqua could she have time to reflect and think but get advice as well. In that time whether romantic or platonic I think Kairi and Ven would interact alot getting to know eachother and it being healthy to see the Wayfinder trios interactions. It might make her miss her friends but also might make her resolve to grow stronger that much firm. Now to the way I see Venkai sense Ventus is treated as the kid within the Wayfinder trio having someone around his age or also treated could lead to interesting bonding or Ventus mentioning how after all they been through Aqua and Terra still treat him like a kid. Kairi who probably doesn't really mind bring treated like she's younger much but might open up a bit more. Maybe over time they both talk about their worries or the events that happen to find some sort of closure. I think even if Ventus and her I think would he cute I also know full well it can be platonic as well.

Roxiri I will die on this rarepair ship. Okay actual reason I just love the concept the struggle with Roxas not knowing if she likes him for technically being a part of him or if his feelings are his own or Sora's (yes Xion probably go through that struggle to) while Kairi might end up hanging around him for see that he feels left behind to. I know Nomura doesn't address it much but from days and both Xion and him wanting to see where Alex went to when Xion forced a fight on him I do think Roxas should have a bit more struggle with those two events especially with them coming back not saying they wouldn't be friends again I just think they should talk about it maybe there's a stiffness in the air till they interact and in this time Kairi who also feels left behind alot probably talk about it growing a slow bond. From Kairi giving suggestions like Roxas talking it out especially sense thats how her and Axel worked it out. And Roxas letting her know that she doesn't have to face things along or feel left behind and to go at her pace. Maybe they could start having small bit training like he did with Xion in-between her training with Aqua. I feel like Roxas though would probably start off a little bit distant when she approaches probably dealing with the fact now that he's out only to find out Ventus is there and he looks like him exactly. Roxas struggles didn't really get addressed much but I do think if they were Kairi might help him out a bit even if it's just advice. The concept just intrigues me and I love it so dear.

Lastly RokuNamiXi I like Xion and Roxas I personally prefer rokunami a bit more but I also love the concept that they would just date together from me shipping all three pairs of Namine and Xion, Roxas and Xion and Roxas and Namine. I didn't wanna just let any of them be a third wheel. I think it'd be wholesome and sweet to see them all dating eachother from having feelings for eachother.
