—What I will write:
most genres at any given time- angst, fluff, smut. I do accept requests and will write anything ranging from drabbles and Headcanons to longer fics (+2k words); I do age up all my characters (given I mostly write for adults anyways) even if there’s no smut; I am fine with most kinks too, just check what I don’t write for a heads up.
It may that you sent a request and I never worked on it or maybe even said I would and then nothing ever happened, I’m sorry but sometimes that’s how it is. Often I don’t have enough motivation and I’m an ask-hoarder so even as I write, I have month old asks stored in—it’s nothing personal at all in fact I may just corporate your ask/request/thirst in a longer fic as I please (sorry not sorry my love)
I’m fine with writing angsty stuff too, blood and gore, character deaths, polyamory, character x reader x character or character x reader; I usually write Fem! Reader unless requested otherwise (I’m not experienced much with Male! Reader though);
my reader inserts are always fem! Bodied and devoid of any other particular physical features (may sometimes be defined as chubby but yes); dub-con; concept of physical/mental abuse (works will be properly tagged or trigger warned)
—What I won’t write: water sports; monster fucking(may hold exceptions); omegaverse; indulgence in bodily fluids (except blood and cum); rape; non-con; pedophilia; incest, any kind of discrimination; scat; lolli-con
—What fandoms I work on: Shinjeki no Kyojin; Boku no hero piko; Jujutsu kaisen; Haikyuu!!; Tokyo Revengers; Bungo Stray Dogs
“Rules”:
i love terms of endearment and use them indiscriminately so if there’s an issue, do lemme know and I do talk a lot in general but don’t barge into my inbox with slurs or “bitch/slut/whore” when and if we don’t know each other)
Do not, I repeat, do NOT bring discourse to my blog <3 about other writers, my mutuals or anything
It may be that I make you uncomfortable or vice versa, in which case I do encourage talking it out and voicing your issue but if you’re not big on that, soft-block and hard-blocks are ok with no hard feelings because I’m huge on curating your own experience
If you wanting to hard-block/soft-block me, it’s ok but please by all accords don’t leave me following you because that’s just weird
don’t send hate because 1. It doesn’t matter to me 2. I’ve better things to deal with and you look stupid

ACOTAR Vs. Racialize Stereotypes
I am not going to speak on TOG because I have not read it and have no plans to read it; I do not care. At all. However, some things in this series kind of...turn my stomach around and I really need to let them out before I spiral.
I understand that Prythan is located in what would be the UK, so I am not mad about the number of white people displayed, especially since this is a traditionally published (1) fantasy (2) female-lead (3) young adult (4) turned to adult (5) novel written by a white woman (6) from upstate New York (7) who has never seen poverty a day in her life (8, and I read her biography, so I know that for a fact.) I'm not mad about that, because in my own story, despite it being very diverse (and I mean very diverse), the majority of people are black or half black, with there being some Indigenous people and South and Eastern Asian people (and very little white people.) However, while I am not mad at what is being portrayed, Im annoyed about how it is being portrayed.
In this series, we meet our first person of color in the form of Alis, the maidservant. At the time, we didn't know she was black or black-coded. Still, we quickly find out because, for some fucking reason, the glamor Tamlin gave his people also changed the color of Alis's skin, and this was because he didn't want Feyre to freak out... so, either Tamlin is a racist or Feyre is (this is a joke, please laugh.) However, what is not a joke is that Alis is depicted as the magical negro-troupe, where she gives sage advice and aids our disastrous main character. This being one-off , would not have been an issue, but for some reason...it is not. Within the same book, we meet the shadow twins who are still coded as people of color with tan skin despite being underground for fucking 50 years. If Rhysand, for some reason, is pale as a fucking ghost, everyone really should be pale, but the maids were people of color. In the first book, all the Help were people of color.
This, combined with the depictions of the Ilyrans, who are pretty much thought to be middle eastern men, as aggressive, backward people, is CRAZY. It is INSANE that the mostly white, NC is the progressive court of all the fucking land, but they refuse to do anything about the situation literally within their borders. They do a lot of grandstanding when it comes to feminism (which is another topic) but...do nothing to stop it. Instead, they just shit on the Ilyrans and call them backward and aggressive, and it is not lost on me that the two full-blooded Ilyrians who escape, shit on their ethnic group whenever they get a chance, and the one who is even remotely proud to be a bat-thing, is also depicted as aggressive and cocky and so very much obnoxious. It is also not lost on me that the three bat-dudes who escaped, all found their sanctuaries in the arms of white women. Of the women in the IC, none of them are people of color (I thought Amren was Asian and Morr was biracial, but that wasn't the case, in fact, she wasn't even related to Rhys on his mom's side.) And it is also not lost on me that the "objectively good" and feminist bat-boy of the trio is also half-white.
We have two POC High Lords in the series (good, I guess) and both of them get a raw deal from the author. Helion is a man who does not know he has a son (I also don't understand why Feyre is the one to figure this out when she has only been in this realm for, at most, a year and had literally just met Helion three days prior. Lucien has been alive for almost 500 years, and NO ONE, not even Helion, figured it out? They half to look a lot alike for her to put it together that easily.) Helion (also the bisexual High Lord) is a fucking hoe who has a child he does not know about in a completely different zip code. No one else has that issue, which would you think would be the case since some of these have been alive for...almost a thousand you.
And now we have my darling Tarquin. He is the youngest of the High Lords at 86. It is known that he would have given the literal shirt off his back if he could be friends with ANYONE, and he wanted to be friends with Rhysand because he saw something in that guy that he liked. And instead of asking "Hey, can we...can we see your book" and then, if Tarquin said no, they steal it, they just steal the shit. Then they had the audacity to consider sicking Amren on them because Tarquin, who was betrayed, gave them blood diamonds, but they never have this energy when it comes to their white counterparts.
Here is what gets my goat--there is something so insidious about a white-coded woman telling a black-coded man what to do in his own house. Tarquin had every right to want to kick Feyre and Rhysand in the teeth and throw them out, but instead, he calmly bitches for a few seconds and then tells Feyre to leave. Upon this, Feyre refuses to exit this man's house, while choosing to approach knowing damn well that his entire life is destroyed because of the butterfly affect her shitty (war criminal) actions in the Spring Court had on his court. And when he looks at the man who he wanted to be friends with and says, "take your mate and leave," Rhysand says "She is the High Lady of the Night Court; she can do whatever she wants..." the amount of entitlement that seeps through those pages made me sick and made me look up a few of SJM's controversial takes. The real-life implication of this entire scene is...crazy. Not to mention that it makes it seem that being the High Lady of the Night Court was more important than being the actual ruler of the current kingdom they are standing in.
What made me even more upset was that...even after all that, Tarquin steal forgave them and helped...
I don't think I need to explain why that is problematic. We are all smart here.

I trigger tag as “tw x” and I'm happy to add any triggers I may have missed - just shoot me an ask!
DNI pertains mostly to terfs, transphobes and others of the ilk.
Please refrain from seeking me out for writing advice with regards to representation of poc/south asian people and instead approach blogs specifically geared towards offering such advice. Also note that context, execution and sensitivity readers matter a lot more than just avoiding certain stereotypes - a lot of blogs offering advice on representation would have you believe otherwise.

5 minute read
On 1st May this year, Johanita Dogbey, a 31-year-old Ghanaian British woman, was killed in broad daylight in Brixton, London. The man accused of attacking her, Mohamed Nur, a 33-year-old Somali British man, is currently in police custody and awaiting trial. Her death adds to a long list of Black women who have been found dead due to or under the suspicion of foul play in recent years: Darrell Buchanan, Blessing Olusegun and Valerie Forde, to name a few. With growing discourse surrounding the prevalence of Black femicide in the United States, following shocking revelations like the fact that Black women are four times as likely as white or Hispanic women to die a violent death, it’s time Britain recognised its own epidemic. On the surface, the data indicate no apparent racial disparities but a deeper look into the context of how these figures are produced points to a more complex and even dangerous reality for Black women in the UK.
Understanding Black femicide
The World Health Organization (WHO) generally defines femicide as the “intentional murder of women and girls because they are women” but allows for broader definitions encompassing any killings of women and girls. The vast majority of women’s murderers are men, with ‘intimate femicide’ (i.e. intimate partner violence) being the most typical form. Worldwide, over 35% of all women’s murders are reported to have been committed by a former or current husband or boyfriend. Conversely, just 5% of male homicides are committed by a current or former intimate partner (this includes gay and bisexual men). Other common types of femicide comprise honour killings (occurring mainly in the Middle East, South Asia and their respective diasporas), dowry deaths (most prevalent in India) and non-intimate femicide — often with a sexual motivation. Accordingly, Black femicide can be understood as the intentional killing of Black women and girls on the basis of their race, gender or both; it can also include any Black female homicide victims.
Looking at the global stats, we can see that in the US, Black women’s risk of homicide rivals that of Black men, with one dying on average every six hours in 2020. In South Africa, an average of nine women are killed every day, making it one of the most dangerous places in the world to live as a woman, particularly a Black woman. Predominantly Black Caribbean countries Antigua & Barbuda and Jamaica have the second and third highest femicide rates in the world, respectively, with El Salvador topping the list.
I n the UK, we know that a woman is killed on average every three days but the frequency of said violence happening to Black women is unclear, given a dearth of intersectional reporting on the issue. For example, the 2020 Femicide Census, an archive of the “women who have been killed by men in the UK and the men who have killed them”, records the ethnicity of just 22 out of 110 victims. Of this figure, 16 were white and six were Asian. Without further context, the takeaway here would be that no Black women (or at least a much smaller proportion) were killed by men within this dataset, which could then be extrapolated to apply to Britain’s population as a whole. When speaking about this to a representative of nia, the anti-violence against women and girls (VAWG) charity that oversees The Femicide Census, they acknowledged this is a problematic conclusion: “The lack of meaningful, verified (i.e. official public record material) data on ethnicity is an ongoing problem. Data on race and ethnicity is drawn from police responses to Freedom of Information requests (FoIs). Ethnicity was provided in only one-fifth of police FoIs, and even then, the terms used are inconsistent, arbitrary, sometimes meaningless, archaic or downright offensive, for example, ‘Dark European’ or ‘Oriental’.”
‘Global majority’ is used as a collective term to describe those racialised as non-white, who make up approximately 85% of the world’s population. Anecdotal evidence and interpersonal experiences from anti-VAWG service providers and service users alike suggest femicide disproportionately impacts global majority women in the UK, including Black women, according to nia. However, without more precise figures to back up these ideas, the ability to identify culture-specific risk factors, barriers to access and best methods of providing support is limited. “Without such data, there will be no evidence base for the need for specialist by and for organisations, additional targeted resources and overhauling practice and policy which may reflect racist and sexist attitudes or institutional racism and sexism,” nia concludes.
Inter-community issues present overlooked risk factors
Like other forms of violence against socially minoritised people, the line between what is and what isn’t an act of discrimination is often ambiguous. Dogbey’s death, for instance, has been framed as a completely “random attack” by media reports. Perhaps it simply was a case of wrong place, wrong time; perhaps not. Latoya Dennis, the founder of Black Femicide UK, thinks not, believing Dogbey’s killing to have been influenced by an underground culture of online inceldom and inter-community tensions between Somali and non-Somali Black groups. “I think there’s a strong incel community and I believe that a lot of Somali men are a part of that, from what I’ve seen online. I wouldn’t be surprised if the man who killed Johanita was a part of that community,” she tells us. Nur is reported to have (non-fatally) assaulted two other women and a man on 29th April, showing a gender bias in his crimes. When asked to expand, Dennis references hostile online encounters with Somali men on her platform after profiling the story of a Somali Bolt driver allegedly attempting to abduct a young, non-Somali Black woman. “That was the most backlash I’ve received through my work. I received a lot of threats and harassment, and I was also doxxed,” she explains.
Sistah space
W hether or not this sentiment is correct, it highlights a valid sense of intra-racial rift within Black Britain that the media and institutions alike fail to interrogate in depth, leaving Black women at risk. Unbothered Editor L’Oréal Blackett speaks to an overreliance on the UK’s few Black journalists to cover Black stories as a partial factor in these gaps in mainstream coverage: “When I’ve worked at major publications, these kinds of stories are looked at as an inter-community issue. There’s a sense of ‘we can’t touch that’ within these white (and male)-dominated newsrooms.” She continues: “UK media is relying on a handful of Black journalists to cover everything that goes on in our communities.”
Sistah Space, a domestic violence charity advocating and campaigning for Black and mixed-race British women of African and Caribbean descent, also cites racial and cultural prejudices as major reasons why Black British women’s deaths don’t receive as much attention as the deaths of white British women: “The media categorically does not give Black women and domestic abuse enough attention. For example, media coverage of the Sarah Everard case was on every news source for a period of time. Can you name any Black women who have had the same amount of coverage or outcry?”
It’s not just the media at fault here. As detailed above, there is an oversight when it comes to the interrogation and provision of race and ethnicity-specific insights from the government and police that potentially reflects apathetic and even racist (and sexist) attitudes towards female global majority concerns in this country. In March 2014, Valerie Forde, 45, and her 22-month-old baby were brutally murdered by Valerie’s ex-partner after her cries for help had been either downplayed or ignored by the authorities, exemplifying such failings. Six weeks prior to her death, Forde had told police that the then 53-year-old Roland McKoy had threatened to burn down her house with her and her baby inside. Instead of Forde’s warning being recorded as a threat to life, which would have required much closer monitoring, it was deemed a threat to property — a serious but far less urgent risk. Furthermore, BBC News reports that a civilian call handler failed to fully record and communicate critical information in the 999 call from one of Forde’s daughters on the day of the crime. Were it not for the “inaction” of authorities, Forde may have been alive today.
Sistah Space believes this to be the case and is advocating for Valerie’s Law, a proposal which would implement “mandatory cultural competency training that accounts for the cultural nuances and barriers, colloquialisms, languages and customs that make up the diverse Black community”. In 2021, the organisation launched a video campaign to illustrate the unequal treatment of Black and white female domestic abuse victims by law enforcement. Research conducted by Sistah Space reveals that in the UK, 86% of women of African and/or Caribbean heritage have either been a victim of domestic abuse or know a family member who has been assaulted. Only 57% of victims, however, said they would report the abuse to the police, likely due to a historic lack of confidence in law enforcement among Black Britons. Meanwhile, March 2020 to June 2021 figures from Refuge, the country’s largest specialist domestic abuse organisation, show that Black women were 14% less likely than white survivors of domestic abuse to be referred to Refuge for support.
Implementing meaningful change
The man accused of killing Johanita Dogbey will not be standing trial until 29th April 2024, joining tens of thousands of backlogged cases in London alone that will not be fully reviewed for an average of over a year. With Dogbey’s story falling out of the mainstream news cycle just over a week after her death, it’s hard to imagine a society where Black femicide is given the consideration it deserves. As things stand, we rely on specialist media platforms like Unbothered to do the work in platforming these narratives and organisations like nia and Sistah Space to push for more comprehensive statistics and cultural awareness among governing bodies. A greater emphasis on Afrofeminist data will ultimately be the building block for more informed insights into the realities and concerns of Black women in the UK. We must continue striving to make this issue a top priority, not just for us but for everyone.

I'm Indian and I feel like Illyrian culture is portrayed so similar to South Asian and Middle Eastern culture...and with all that when SJM portrays them as 'savages' it feels so....stereotypical and racist to me like-
The only POC subgroup within the NC and they are called 'savages' and all live in poverty and cannot be changed like-that just screams racism to me but sometimes I feel like I'm exaggerating or am looking too deeply into it.Like I was wondering what everyone else's opinion is on this.
I truly feel like some of SJM's portrayals are so- stereotyped.Like she pulls cultures from the actual world-puts them into her fantasy novel in such a way that it looks awfully racist.
But then it might just be me :/
Please don't feel as if your opinion is invalid; your opinion is always valued. Many people have expressed similar views. If you check the anti sjm tag, you can see a lot of people are not happy with her works, not just for the representation of POC, but LGBT representation, treatment of mentally ill characters, treatment of women - the list goes on.
Illyrians have brown skin and are savages. They're almost primitive with little magic and live in tents. The two most powerful Illyrians aren't like the rest - they're good and don't hold any of the values of the others. Mutilating a female's wings so she can't leave when wings are meant to be valued at all costs is an allegory to FGM. They won't change. They're just there to die in wars. Yeah, it's a pretty disgusting creation from SJM.
"The gift of a violent, warmongering people."
Obviously, that's all they are with no variance. The only two that are different are the most powerful two who are the good guys. There's no difference between how they celebrate Winter Solstice, any holy days, their food/culture etc.
Mor in ACOMAF says the whole place should be burnt to the ground - and then people ship her and Emerie together. I've seen a post that said Emorie would just be Pocahontas/John Smith.
When Feyre first goes to Velaris, she's given "Night Court attire" which is then never really seen again (except Amren wears a similar style but nobody else does).
My high-waisted peach pants were loose and billowing, gathered at the ankles with velvet cuffs of bright gold. The long sleeves of the matching top were made of gossamer, also gathered at the wrists, and the top itself hung just to my navel, revealing a sliver of skin as I walked. Comfortable, easy to move in—to run. Feminine. Exotic.
Which to me is as if she just wanted the aesthetic of an "exotic" culture then forgot about it/didn't bother actually developing it.
Tumblr media
There's lots to be said about her various characterisations - and lots has been said. For example Helion being canonically bisexual but also falling into the bisexuals want to sleep with everyone trope. Or how Tarquin, a young black man, is treated as a stepping stone for Feyre to train; she flirts with him to get what she wants and steals the Book of Breathing from his court.
Another thing, is when they're discussing Rhys being high king
Azriel stepped forward, shadows trailing from his shoulders. “Kallias, Tarquin, and Helion might be willing to kneel. Thesan will kneel if the others do.”
3 out of 4 of those names who would be willing to kneel to supreme overlord Rhys are MOC which makes me feel very icky. Tarquin and Helion are both black and Thesan's mother is from Xian (which is likely another place that she's taken snippets from other cultures to suit the aesthetic she wants then will promptly forget about) and is brown skinned with "up-tilted eyes".
It's all very, very gross and there are definitely elements of racism ingrained to it. Other people have delved into it in a lot more detail - and have explained it far more eloquently than I can. Please know that your opinion is valid. If you are made uncomfortable and upset from the portrayals, do not push them aside. There is a reason why it is making you uncomfortable and that is because they are racist stereotypes.

I'M JUST A HAPPY GUY
Dude dead end: paranormal park brings me so much joy. Like there's just casual representation that's still part of the plot and matters.
Like Barney being a canon Jewish, trans, gay man who is also fat/plus sized (and him being plus sized be genetic too), his boyfriend being Vietnamese, and talking about how hard it is for him to tell his family that he's gay. THE FUCKING MAIN LIKE ANTAGONIST FOR SEASON 1 WAS A GIRL BOSS AND BEING VOICED BY A DRAG QUEEN. on top of it barney talking about binding and how awkward it feels being fat and at the gym.
not to mention Norma. I see so much of myself in Norma, like soo much. She's canonically autistic on top of being a woman of color, and bisexual. that's fucking huge representation. also, Ms. Khan(Swati) being supportive of Norma is just so amazing. you don't understand how much I cried because of that. I'm genuinely so happy we got of representation of a super supportive south Asian parent. I don't even have that. and then her having a crush on Badyah and experiencing that rejection (as much as I'd absolutely love being able to see a sapphic Hajabi because we never get this). How every relationship is handled so healthily or reaching a healthy compromise. Barney and Logs having a super healthy relationship, Norma communicating that she needs space after getting rejected by Badyah.
ALSO BARNEY AND LOGS BEING AN INTERRACIAL GAY COUPLE JUST PURE JOY FROM ME.
Basically, just all the representation we get from it brings me so much joy. I've never in my life gotten to see characters like me. Characters scared to come out to families who are Asian, characters who are south Asian women and love other women, characters who are plus-sized and ok with it, characters who wear a hijab and still just do the same things everyone else does. I just love Dead End and i always will. its representation made for the people it's representing and not representation made for our oppressors.
OH AND FINAL NOTE: barney being open about having a therapist and making jokes about needing to call his therapist after scary shit happening to him

Yuletide 2023
Tumblr media
Hey, Subzero Ice Skater here, thanks for reading this and considering writing for me. It’s my second time doing Yuletide but first time doing a letter. I am still feeling my way back through fanfiction; right now I feel I could be up to just about anything, if written with love, confidence, and good will. However, it’s probably more difficult to write without some idea of who you’re writing for. It’s easier to edit down a mountain of words than coming in fresh at a white blank page.
I know Yuletide is the small fandom exchange but I’ve never really been part of an overly huge fandom, especially one that had me wanting to read its fic or having a huge amount of fic at all. I felt like I never got to experience through beginners’ fanfic tropes that I read other fans all the time. Mostly the fluffy stuff: the five things plus one, the fake dating, the coffee/bookshop/library AUs, sickfic, whatever a wingfic is–the tried, true and usually shippy–it’d be fun to finally get to read that. I think that’s what I’m mostly looking for–something really fun, probably fluffy. That kind of fic is probably more fitting if keeping to the lower, relaxing end of Yuletide.
But on the flipside, I love the more serious kind of fics: character studies, stories with a touch of wistfulness, maybe horror; where characters learn fundamental truths about life and are forever changed, or something is slowly revealed about the world around them. Atmospheric pieces. I’m a big fan of those English Western literary short stories–stories with a twist, either happy or not.
I think if unsure, it’s probably best to go with a happy or hopeful ending. Or if it’s that puts the character(s) through the wringer, something that ends with powerful catharsis. I think if you hit on a hit on an idea and you’re confident with your skill, I’d say go for it.
Stuff I like:
Women being cool
World History
 the Arctic
Acknowledgement/presence of Indigenous people/history/practices especially in spaces usually believed to be the province of Western/white people (eg in the history of the Arctic)
Astronomy
unusual formats (example: epistolary format)
unusual POVs (stories told from an outsider’s or an NPC’s experience)
connecting themes like flower or plant or animal symbolism, flower languages or objects that can reveal something their character
passages of time (a day-in-the-life, four seasons in a year, birth to death, first and last times)
literary AUs (one time I saw somebody request a Gawain and the Green Knight AU for Mega Man and I just fell so in love with doing something like that) (even cooler if it’s something that’s not from the familiar Western literary canons, say Latin American, South East Asian, Arctic literature, as long as you’re up for it.)
Bisexual characters
Gender non-conforming characters
Time travel/Time loops/Temporal Fish Out of Water/ Time Travel shenanigans in general.
If you’re really confident, playing with meta, like a self-aware narrator or the narrative coming alive.
Crossovers with stuff I like! I think I’m supposed to say I’m opting-in. If you’re familiar with more than one of my fandoms, especially the ones requested here, and somehow work out a way where my favorite characters meet/interact/even just help each other from the sidelines, I bet that could be very cool.
For the robot characters, going “let us contemplate our humanity”
Happy/ fun/ awkward sex with lots of laughter.
Parallel plots that combine at the end.
Vignettes.
Culture/personality crashes
Crack treated seriously
Puns
Holiday/Christmas fic (doesn’t have to be, obviously)
My tolerance for violence is fairly high, but I’m going to stick to Violence-For-Rule-Of-Cool-Sexy-or-Funny. If they get permanently injured or just for the duration of the story, I want stuff that makes them look hot or cool, like scars or eye patches or crutches. I’m also more than okay with topics like suicidal thoughts or ideation. I’d actually welcome it especially if it’s in service of catharsis. Whatever their bodies can stay broken but their spirit don’t, at least, not at the very end.
DO NOT WANTS: Scat Watersports Omegaverse Readerfic (First or second person POV is okay if playing around with unusual or unreliable narrators)
Art and treats are welcomed. If you give any art based on any characters requested here, I’m probably going to cry. ;___; If you’re a visual artist, I’d love to see you use new techniques or whatever you’ve always to do as practice. Use me as your guinea pig!
Rockman | Mega Man Classic
Tundra Man, Bounce Man, Block Man, Impact Man
Tundra Man as the fic focus–the story is about him, features him in a major way, or about somebody/something else but from his POV. Bounce Man, Block Man, Impact Man could appear as POV/major/supporting/background/mentioned characters.
I’m completely normal about Tundra Man. He’s my favorite Mega Man character and I fell in love with him at first sight and I’m absolutely pretty much always ravenous for anything more about him. I’m not weird. I think he’s gorgeous and his backstory is cool and moved me. Imagine being built for one thing, completely falling in love with another, and giving absolutely everything about yourself to your chosen art?
Tundra’s past– I’d love to see exploration of his past life: his daily and implied solitary life and work as an arctic robot, how or when exactly he was inspired by figure skating on television, or how he balanced his work and his newfound passion for skating before the events of the game. All the decisions he had to make when he was modifying himself. As a polar exploration robot, where did he go? As land development robot, what did he do? The fact that he could even decide to modify himself, when apparently, all the robots don’t have true free will, is so endlessly fascinating to me–what does that imply about Mega Man’s world and its robots? And it’s never revealed how he looked with tougher-exterior, so what did he look like? Does it matter to him? Does miss being stronger? Was the price worth it?
Tundra’s future– Or maybe skip a bit to his future–Tundra  gets rebuilt after the events of Mega Man 11, and he decides to pursue a career in figure skating. What’s that like? I’ve seen a (way too) few interpretations of how Tundra would tackle that and I’d just love more. What is competitive figure skating like for robots? Would somebody like him be able to just do that? Does he face any obstacles or objections from his creators? Does he face any backlash from what he did to the city and city museum? Did you know in his original Japanese profile, it’s said he was inspired specifically by ice dancing? A sport that is a totally different beast than singles ice skating? What if he originally did want to do ice dancing? What other challenges or opportunities or culture clashes would a solitary ice robot who spent years in the Arctic encounter when thrusted into a highly competitive, highly publicized, seemingly glamorous world of competitive ice skating? How would someone like him, a robot who had to do self-modifications, actually compete against actual sports robots simply built for skating and nothing else? Is he unique or severely underqualified? Are there even such a thing as professional robot ice skaters or was he watching a human ice skating competition? Does he get support from Cossack Labs or Dr. Light or does he get punished for going against his original design. And another thing, what is up with him being built by Cossack Labs but him showing up with Dr. Light’s lab at the beginning of Mega Man 11–what is the story there, is he a reverse Beat–
Tundra and the Arctic – Sorry, I’m but I’m totally normal about Tundra. This one is about a tundra AU–despite being called Tundra Man, neither his stage (which mostly takes place in a museum), nor his current passions (figure skating) nor his original purpose (polar exploration or development) seem to reflect the tundra much. I think it’d be easy to write Tundra as completely abandoning his original purpose for skating but I’d like to headcanon where he still cares a lot for the tundra and the welfare of the Arctic as a whole. There are a lot of assumptions and misconceptions about the Arctic and I’d love to see that as a reflection of the man himself. It’s not always eternal ice–the tundra is a biome that supports life and people all year around, and have for thousands of years. There’s spring, summer, fall, and winter in the Arctic tundra. Maybe something like a fisher king situation where the landscape reflects his state of mind or where he is in life, maybe it’s just symbolic. Maybe it’s literal since he’s a powerful robot made for land development. Maybe it’s magic realism. His purpose being about land development in Arctic brings up interesting implications but it’s really addressed in canon. There was even a joke about how people never getting to see his performance as bad global warming. Climate change is still a thing in their world when Chill Man is described to be made to stop the glaciers from melting. How does Tundra himself deal with climate change in his world when land development in the Arctic usually mean using up its resources and hastening global warming. Does he feel guilty? Does he ignore it? Does he work with anti-global warming robots like Chill Man or does he clash against them? Is pursuing his passions selfish in light of this?
Tundra people & animals! –I understand if topics like global warming and climate change can get too depressing so if you can just focus on Tundra loving and caring about the tundra. I’d love to see Tundra being cute with tundra animals, whether robots like his stage’s Ice Swans or biological like the huskies, seals and bears mentioned in his profile. Maybe he got so good with modifying robots because he was in charge of repairs for the animal ones. Maybe the living animals ended up watching him because he was in charge of tracking them first. If there are any original human characters featured, I’d love there to be Indigenous Arctic people. I really dislike the story and perception of the Arctic being so overwhelmingly white and mostly about Western colonization, with little thought of the Indigenous people who lived there for thousands of years, seeing them as nothing more than ancient history. Again, I understand that topics could be depressing, and maybe rather be avoided, but there’s no need to get heavy on it, either. I'd just like to see Indigenous people being presented in Mega Man’s world just as much as any other nation. Like, if there’s scientist, citizens, travelers, entrepreneurs, or what have you, and it takes place in the Arctic (or even not), it’d be cool if background characters could be native or at the very least, not overwhelmingly white.
Bounce Man – Bouncy is adorable and cute; thinking about him makes me want to cry. He has my favorite stage music of the game! If I could request longfic of my faves I would. I’m mostly interested in a Tundra-focused fic so for any appearance by Bouncy, I’d like it to be on support for him. It’s easy to dismiss such a happy-go-lucky character described as having childlike innocence as having no depth or unable to feel any “real” emotions but I’d love a serious take on him, while still keeping his upbeat attitude. A sort of “crack taken seriously” but robot bouncing form. I wanna see him seriously played against Tundra, they’ve got some good parallels going on.
Bounce was also transformed from his original purpose, but unlike Tundra, it wasn’t his choice. Also unlike Tundra, who WANTS people to know who he is and what he does,  Bounce is already established as a household name (with his own brand of exercise–Hopxercise) and beloved by people (well, kids). Bounce Man was transformed from something with underground utility (crash test dummies aren’t known for public appeal) to something that brings a lot of people joy (an adorable, probably profitable, athletic mascot). I’ve always felt there was some horror to make something self-aware crash test dummy that’s made just for the sole purpose of dying over and over again. And then he gets turned into a funny clown fitness instructor. There’s definitely a story there, feel–a horror, maybe the consequences of capitalism and fitness culture or something.
Is Tundra jealous of Bounce’s appeal?  Does he try to leverage his relationship with Bounce Man somehow? How do they react to each other? Does Bounce not notice since he’s too happy-go-lucky? Or he does notice but he just does not care? Bounce is basically a fitness coach so does Bounce use his expertise to help out Tundra achieve his figure skating dreams? How would robot-to-robot exercise work anyway?
Ship/Sexfic: Sex with Mega Man robots! How does it go down?
Tumblr media
I don’t have a favorite Tundra ship but I’d love to see a take on a Tundra x Bounce pairing. It doesn’t have to involve sex, since I’m more than happy with them as friends or lovers but non-humanoid robots don’t get as much play with the fandom, especially not with sex, and I’d love for someone else to try it with Bounce. Bounce is a big moving weight ball with long stretchy arms and more than thick enough fingers. Plus, Bounce is basically a clown robot in charge of a gym with lots of access to exercise equipment and utilities. Plenty of opportunity to stretch all kinds of things. Considering Bounce’s personality, I’m looking for something funny than straight up hot, but I’m sure there’s plenty of opportunities for funny and/or heartwarming sex.
Block Man and Impact Man – I nominated them because I’d nominate all the MM11 robot masters if I could. I love them all but Block and Impact are slightly less popular since they’re more of the less humanoid of the robots and they’re my favorites after Tundra and Bounce. I adore that Block’s a huge history nerd with an ambitious heart to build like ancients and that Impact’s basically four people (he’s three robots who consider himself brothers and could change control or split depending on the situation, that’s so cool and how does that work? How does he feel?) I especially love that they’re canonically drinking buddies and I headcanon them as ride and die brothers-in-arms. You don’t have to include them fic but it’d be nice if they could be supporting characters, can make a background appearance, mentioned somewhere, or help influence the plot in some way. Some ideas: they have to help fix or build something for Tundra and/or Bounce. Maybe something goes wrong with Boing-Boing Park. Maybe there’s a secret plan to help build a training ice rink for Tundra. Maybe the two invite Bounce and Tundra on their drinking trips and they talk about love, life and ancient history (both personal and real world). Maybe it’s just as cute as the four robots just hanging out in the Arctic and building snowmen, snow pyramids and enjoying each other’s company.
Other Mega Man 11 Robot Masters are more than welcome to show up. As is pretty much any associated characters like Rock and Roll and Dr. Light and Dr. Wily. If you can throw in the Cossacks somewhere and explore their dynamics somewhere, I would immediately meet my expiration date out of happiness.
Fandom DNW:
Bounce having a childish and naive means he’s treated as a literal child. If Tundra, Impact and Block are considered adults in robot years then should Bounce. Please treat Bounce as an adult that happens to act childish and not a literal kid.
Tundra being dismissive or not caring about the Arctic.
Advance Wars
Jess, Jake, Colin, Worldbuilding
Jess x Jake as a ship, Colin as a major/supporting/background/mentioned character, Worldbuilding that features all three or any of Advance Wars characters.
There’s Advance Wars Re-Boot Camp out there but I’d like to stick with the canon of the original three games (Olaf’s defected from Orange Star, Eagle being surprised at being beaten by a girl, Cosmo/Macro/Omega Land existing as separate continents, their appearances (not a fan of Jess’s redesign specifically) etc). It might be a mess, canon-wise, but it was the mess I fell in love with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m starving for Jess x Jake. Just give me something anything, I’ll be so grateful aaaah. From the fluffiest fluff to heaviest military fic! I’m also very normal about Jess x Jake. I love them both individually and together; Jess GreenEarth is my everything and I think Jake’s so fun, but for this, I’d  like them to be treated as a set and shipped, shipped, shipped together like an overnight package. For something that has some canonical basis (they have a Tag Power in Advance Wars: Dual Strike), there’s absolutely nothing for them. I’m a multishipper and also like them with other people but, in my heart of hearts, they’re the OTP. I think for most people, they don’t ping off with shippy vibes, especially compared with their possible tags or interactions in the games – Javier is outwardly romantic towards Jess, it’s very hard to not see Sasha’s interactions as romance and Jake is clearly devoted to Rachel. I’ve heard that a relationship is more like mentorship than romantic and I agree–and that’s why I think they’re so good together. The relationship that’s sweet, solid, dependable, sweet, and maybe more than a little silliness.
Colin - Colin’s actually my favorite male character. He’s just this proper little gentleman who shows hints of inexperience.  He’s very booksmart with military tactics but still so very impressionable, especially to those he admires, and I don’t think that would change when he grows up. He’s just so mature in some ways and totally inexperienced in others. I’d like him to make an appearance somehow and help the couple along–maybe he’d like some lessons from Jess, maybe he’s curious why his sister Sasha is so taken with Jake; maybe his Power of Money could help kickstart whatever scenarios happen with Jake and Jess.
Or you could flip my last request–Colin as the possible focus or POV of the story while JakexJess happens in the background. Maybe Colin doesn’t quite recognize what’s happening, or maybe he does and he somehow helps them get together in his own quiet Colin way. Jess mentoring Colin as well–they’re both from so different social backgrounds but they also both have this studious, honor student approach to the military.  How much are they different, how much are they alike? A Jess and Colin friendship would be precious to me.
I’d love it if all three of them are featured equally somehow (anthology??? Baton pass story telling?) but I don’t mind if the focus is not equal, because I do love all of them so much.
I’ve been into flower languages lately and Jess’s favorite thing is apparently dandelions. What could Jake’s and Colin’s favorite flowers be? What does this say about their characters? Is it meaningful to their life or does it remind them of a certain period of time in their life? A person maybe. Maybe their home countries.
Jake and Jess geeking about tanks and machinery would be so good.
So in the game, they don’t really do well in snow. Maybe they get stuck in a blizzard and get snowed in some place and very sexy, sexy shenanigans happen. I’m all in for Jake x Jess smut. My only preference would be Jess femdom. Maybe Jess could be a mentor for Jake in more ways than one.
Jake and Jess are ride-and-die for each other. By this I mean, literally. Maybe not sexually, but that could be funny, too. In a similar idea, they use their Tag Power together but it somehow translates to them actually playing “heavy metal”. Full on ridiculous, unleashing their full potential means re-enacting the scenes from Mad Max Fury Road, Flame Guitar style.
They keep spending all their time working, fighting and unconsciously finding all the reasons to spend time with each other, completely unaware they’re already in love with each other.
For something a little more serious and realistic, they’re in an established relationship but having some trouble navigating a long distance relationship between Green Earth and Orange Star. They’re also from totally different countries and upbringing (roughly speaking Germany and the USA). They might get a little strained but they’re still determined to work it out and have their happy ending together.
Colin, for some reason, buys out an amusement park and for some reason, Jess and Jake decided they HAVE to test out all the rides–no one asked them to, but they just felt it was their duty, you know. What no, it wasn’t an excuse to act out a date. There’a war going on and they’re two very serious, very adult, military personnel; not two teenagers in love. Now watch them break the speed limit on these bumper cars.
Actually, Colin buys/does something and Jess/Jake deals with it in their own way.
They all end up in Blue Moon’s equivalent of the Arctic Russia somehow, say on a mission, and they experience what the Arctic have to offer (northern lights, harsh winters, polar bears???)
Jake is taken aback by Jess even bringing up hot springs. Maybe he was just way too distracted by the image of her + hot springs. How distracted could he get when those hot springs joke become real.
Missing scenes between or during one of the game's missions. A take on their final convo before the last battle.
I also adore the Allied Nations a lot and I’d really love it if they could show up. Not necessary but it’d be so good to have fic with screen time for Sasha, Grimm, Sensei, Javier and my beautiful sweet girl, Rachel, especially the old timers. They’re not very popular but I love them so much. I also love the Bolt Guard so if you need some villains for your story for any reason, I’d love to see them.
Advance Wars (Worldbuilding)
If you could feature female infantry soldiers or officers as being a normal part of the military that’d make me so happy. I don’t mind appropriate enough sexism since that was a part of the original games (or even some racism as a result of historical fighting between countries) but Wars World is mostly chill so I’d like to keep the representation positive and progressive level. This is a world where female COs are the norm so it’d be nice if the rest of its military mostly reflect this. If you want to tackle a more realistic then, especially in service of a more serious fic take, then okay, but it's more fluffy and lighthearted then let the world reflect this, too.
Maybe you want to take on a particular worldbuilding, well, fine, I wanna read your meta, but there seems to be this desire to make Advance Wars gritty and realistic and “make it make sense!” when I really do prefer the cartoon wars world. Yes, this is a world where children, teens and grandpas fight in the army with superpowers, but don’t try to justify with realism, just go with it! I don’t mind poking fun with the silliness of the world but at the end of the day, I just want any roasting and exploring to be done with genuine love, and not embarrassment.
Fandom DNW: I love memes and stupid jokes but please, no “What’s an airport again” gag or any references to it. Nothing else in Advance Wars fanfic will immediately and negatively take me out than that.
Please don’t overly feminize Jess especially in some attempt to correct her gender expression or shove into traditional strict gender roles. She’s fairly in butch and gender non-comforming in appearance and in character. But please don’t go the other way and make her into an unemotional, unsmiling, uncaring men or people hater. I’m really not fond of the Re-Boot Camp redesign. It’s implied she worked her way up against sexism, I’m okay with some of that being present or getting believably sick of it. She’s been described in her Japanese profile as an otokomasari, but while she doesn’t get along with Eagle and she says she doesn’t quite “get” people like with battles, she shown also very kind and friendly towards Jake, Javier and Drake, and she’s mentioned to be popular with her troops which definitely has men it, too. Please think of her with a strong, knowing, gentle smile.
Another Eden
Riica, Zilva, Toova, Another Eden Worldbuilding
Gen fic focusing Zilva and Riica, not necessarily together; optional Toova appearing as a major/supporting/background/mentioned character, Worldbuilding is optional
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She’s a work android who’s a little WHACKy*, he’s a gentleman soldier who loves writing letters to his wife–together they fight crime! Well, not exactly. There are dozens of dozens of characters in Another Eden, and so many times, places, stories that I honestly don’t know where to begin. However, these two are my favorite characters and while they didn’t have direct interactions, I’d love fic or art about them. Maybe they go on a time travel adventure together, solving problems like delivering lost letters, or finding lost cats. Maybe one of them gets in trouble and the other helps them out like Riica breaks down and only Zilva is around to help or Zilva seems really sad one day and Riica misunderstands the situation but ends up cheering him out anyway.  They don’t even have to be together or at all; I’d be happy with a split up story or scenes that may or may not be connected at the end.
*her weapon type is hammer
I really like them because they’re both odd ducks in their way even in their own team/game–even as a pretty adorable gothic lolita character, Riica’s the only visibly “robot” like playable character–almost all non-human like girls look more like conventional humans. Zilva is the only visibly old man playable in the game. They’re both cool but I like how they stand out from the other playable characters.
Zilva is one of the few characters with the art personality. Along with the letter writing, I think it'd be wonderful to see him make art and use that to help people in some way. Art probably meant visual art but what if he’s particularly well-versed in the art of writing? Calligraphy and the like. If you want to speculate what exactly happened to his wife and how this still exactly drives him, please do.
I just think Riica is adorable and very funny. Her off-kilter personality and robotic manner could make for some fun situations and interactions.
We’ve got a character from the present times, a character from the far future, and bringing up a character from antiquity, here's Toova.
Tumblr media
By the time Aldo and the gang meet her, she’s already about three thousand years old; she’s implied she might be able to survive way into Riica’s time, over twenty thousand years, easy. Even though Zilva looks older and Riica’s a machine, she’s probably the most mature and “together” of the three. It might be hard to juggle between three viewpoints, I’m okay with her being a supporting character or even just a cameo. She could be one asking help or the one they turn for advice. She might never show up at all but her presence can be felt in the background or through letters. I want to imagine all of Aldo’s traveling companions end up as friends. Maybe Toova and Zilva could end up talking about Toova’s Orphia and Zilva’s wife.
Worldbuilding: Again, the settings of Another Eden encompassed so many eras, places and even timelines, it’d be hard to pick to focus on. If you’ve got any ideas for something to focus on, I’d love to read it. I’ll be honest, I’ve probably forgotten a huge chunk of background lore since there’s so much of it and I play every so often but if you want to write something particular, go for it.
I think since AE is so big on time travel, I’d like to see it treated as a theme in general. Like, a story that’s about the past, present and future. Maybe it’s literal as them hopping from era to era in an attempt to right something that was wrong. Maybe it’s as low stakes as finding a lost cat or delivering a forgotten letter. They must be aware of Aldo’s time traveling adventures so it’d be possible if the story could incorporate stuff like time loops or playing with time travel tropes in general. It could be present in the story itself like presenting a non-linear narrative or a story going backwards, or sidewards.
If possible I want the focus split between Riica and Zilva, and a huge side helping of Toova, but I don’t mind the rest of the cast or even original characters making an appearance and helping out with the story.
Fandom-specific DNW:
I know it’s something that happens in canon but please no jokes about how Toova is self-conscious about how old she is. The whole “haha obviously beautiful women are still so superficial about their ages and looks” joke is so tiresome to me. I don’t imagine Zilva could ever be that rude but I don’t like Riica or any other character commenting and Toova overreacting. Discussions or comments about aging, growing, or mortality are fine. Even other jokes or gags about it are fine, just no “it’s rude to ask a woman her real age” gags.
No smut or ship requests for this fandom. Background couples/shipping are okay if you wanna bring in other characters and their relationships. Non-canon ships are okay to appear if you have them.
Thanks for getting this far. I’m looking forward to reading the story that only you can tell.

Rules: List 8 tv shows for your followers to get to know you!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In no particular order, with explanations:
Harlots on Hulu (2017 - 2019): a colourful, well-acted, diverse period drama set in middle 18th century London, featuring prominently a canonical bi lead character -> Charlotte Wells (it’s confirmed in the written script of the show and Jessica said so in multiple interviews). I watched this show perhaps a bit too young given that the subject matter is… 18th century sex workers. But, Charlotte Wells was one of my early “she’s so me” characters and she was played wonderfully by Jessica Brown Findlay, also, Charlotte Wells at least her outward demeanour and appearance inspired my original character, Audrey.
AMC’s IWTV (2022 - ongoing): I am the target audience for this show, enough said.
WWDITS (2019 - ongoing): it’s about that messed up vampire found family/polycule the comedy edition. Also props to Taika Waititi and the writers for knowing pop cultural vampires.
TURN: Washington’s Spies (2014 - 2017): it is about that messed up found family/polycule — cause I said so, and, they’re spies and it’s the 18th century and American revolution this time. A new-ish edition to this list, I blame @musicboxmemories (affectionate).
Bridgerton (2020 - ongoing): I watched season 1 during the pandemic out of sheer boredom, I wasn’t terribly into it until season 2. It is of course, not perfect, but I love seeing South Asian women stay employed, also I love the aesthetics and soundtrack even if it’s not remotely accurate. It’s fun escapism and not as hefty as the other tv on this list, and that’s okay.
Hannibal (2013 - 2015): a new edition to this list, but, predictable, given how much I like horror and Anne Rice’s work. I fell down a tumblr rabbit hole and now Alana Bloom is another character on my “she’s so me” list. A win for the bisexuals.
Good Omens (2019 - ongoing): I read the book first, purely because I wanted to. Then I watched the show for David Tennant, then I related too hard to Anathema Device and Crowley, also… as a bi, I’m holding them both very gently.
Jhansi Ki Rani (2009 - 2011): I learned most of my early Hindi through this show! A Hindi tv show covering the life of anti British imperialist Rani (Queen) Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, from cradle to funeral pyre. It makes this list purely based on the mental nostalgia I have hearing the theme song and because I wanted to be gender norm breaking sword wielding, Calvary bound, badass anti imperialist Rani Lakshmi Bai so bad when I was younger. It is half the reason I initially did horseback riding and spent a decade fencing.
tagged by: myself.
tagging: @iamthemaestro, @grymoria, @selkiewife & @musicboxmemories (if you want). 💕

Sandra Oh the Homophobe? Yea or Nay: A Discussion (with Teeth!).
Tumblr media
This entire debate spun out several essays from @anevolutionarynecessity's page where she makes her case that Sandra Oh is a homophobe. Some of her posts can be found here, here, and here. Anybody who's read this blog knows already this is a Sandra Oh safe space. I freely admit my bias toward her., but I'm not put off by having a tough discussion with someone who puts as much thought into their position as @anevolutionarynecessity has in her assessment that Sandra is indeed homophobic. I contend that the assessment is incorrect. And away we go. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve With all of this firmly in mind, it is literally only possible to deny that Sandra Oh is homophobic, and that this is a problem, if you’re wholly willfully blind to it. Or if you disingenuously choose to shut down this viewpoint by dismissing it or excluding it by narrowly focusing on Sandra Oh’s race. Again, Sandra Oh is both Asian and homophobic. And her race isn’t the point here, her disappointing and hurtful homophobia is. She’s complicit in Killing Eve’s homophobia.
That’s an accusation, but an accusation is not evidence.  I am not trying to “shut down this viewpoint by dismissing it.”  I disagree with it.   That’s not the same thing.   Nor am I excluding the viewpoint “by narrowly focusing on Sandra Oh’s race.”  I’m expanding the discussion into an area you haven’t bothered to consider except to use Oh’s Korean heritage against her because South Korea’s culture is homophobic in your opinion. Sandra’s parents were born in South Korea.  She was born in Canada, but if you want to use her parents’ birthplace to indict their daughter, I certainly can’t stop you.  I agree that Sandra Oh is Asian.  Whether she is homophobic depends on whether or not I accept your insistence that she is.  I don’t.  My belief is you built the roof first and then set forth to construct a house under it.   The conclusion had been reached before you made a substantive case of Oh’s supposed homophobia.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve We know that Eve’s lover Villanelle is shot in the arms of the woman she loves, shortly after their passionate kiss and (implied) consummation of their same-sex romantic relationship. Sandra Oh even confirms Laura Neal’s disturbing viewpoint that Eve experienced a “rebirth”, as her comments in that awful recent Deadline interview identify her soul destroying scream as a “life cry.” Among Sandra’s many other shitty homophobic comments and her concerning roles over the years. I'm still waiting for the confirmation of what those "many other shitty homophobic comments" are. Do you have a quote where Sandra Oh says, "I hate doing these gay parts" or "Does anybody with half a brain really believe two women can have a happy relationship together?" That would really add some meat to this bone. What I've heard over the years is Oh casting doubt on the idea that there could be a happy ending for Eve and Villanelle. She disagrees with fans who crave just that, but what does she know? She's only played Eve Polastri over four seasons and 31 episodes. If Oh is guilty of anything it is not feeding into some in the fandom's desire for the Villaneve Endgame. Neither Oh nor Jodie Comer has gone all-in for such a thing, but only one of them has been put on blast for it.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve Sandra Oh has a proven track record of being a straight woman playing explicitly same sex roles and on top of that problematic roles. The same sex relationship in Catfight is fraught with hostility and violence and raw emotion in a way that so obviously draws comparisons to Eve and Villanelle in Killing Eve. We all know how Sandra Oh’s bisexual role in that turned out, don’t we?
Actually, we don’t because Sandra Oh is not bisexual in Catfight.
The same-sex relationship in Catfight is between Anne Heche and Alicia Silverstone, not Sandra Oh.  She plays the ex-friend of Heche’s character.  The synopsis for Catfight reads as follows:  Two former college friends, who now find themselves in very different walks of life, meet up at a fancy cocktail party: Veronica has become the entitled, wine-loving wife of a rich businessman, while Ashley, along with her lover Lisa, struggles to make ends meet as an artist. As the two women reconnect, long-buried hostilities, jealousy, and anger explode into a vicious, bloody fight that leaves both of them battered and bruised.
So this is not the example of Sandra’s “problematic roles.”  But I’m curious, if you have a problem with straight women playing same-sex roles, why is Jodie Comer’s name conspicuously absent in your damning of Sandra Oh playing these sort of parts?   Is there a double standard at work here?
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve (cont) Catfight (2017) Sandra Oh plays a bisexual woman who runs into her ex girlfriend one night a social function and because of their unresolved romance and bitterness, they get into increasingly brutal fights that puts each of them in a coma. The violence and resentment escalates until they both have nothing left to lose but their lives. And they do. The movie ends with them literally beating each other to death.
Yeah, I saw the movie.  Her co-star was Ann Heche, the former girlfriend of Ellen DeGeneres.   It’s a black comedy that is brutally funny.  I liked it.  Sorry you didn’t, but the brutality is the point of the film.  There have been literally hundred of films of men beating the snot out of each other for various reasons, but when it is two women squaring off and going toe-to-toe, blow-for-blow, it’s jarring as Oh and Heche discussed in an interview:
Tumblr media
When you hear the title Catfight, you're expecting maybe a slap or some hair pulling. But you two full-on brawl in this. Why do you think that title was chosen?
Oh: I think that's one of the great things about the actual film. One of the things that I also liked about it is the actual title. Because it's exactly that -- you have an image of what a catfight is, and this film really upends it. Those images of what you might think a catfight is is not what these two characters do. At all.
Heche: It's also the depth of feeling that women have and how we express it. Like, women and our behavior, we're supposed to behave. But if we would let out our anger toward another girl, we wouldn't be violent. We'd just smack each other and pull each other's hair a little. Even "catfight" in its essence of fighting doesn't allow women to be powerful in the depth of emotion. I think that's one of the things that we liked exploring.
Like, if we can take all of this life that these two -- for lack of a more complicated term -- flawed women [have], who are so angry at themselves or the world or anybody else that they can blame, when you dig down as deep as you can possibly go to get yourself to the place that would make that fight happen, that starts to encompass what we think complicated women are about. And how it's expressed is through the fighting, and we loved that metaphor, obviously. I think, really, women are hungry to express themselves as we see men express themselves. But we've learned different ways to do it.
Having sat with you for about 15 minutes, you seem to get along really great. But you hear stories about how Hollywood and this industry can pit women against each other. Is that something you feel you've experienced?
Heche: You mean women who don't like women? Yeah, all the time. We're not those kind of women.
Oh:I haaate you. I know that you have expressed that before. I will say, for me, of course there is that, but [in] my experience, just the work that I've done over the past year -- all women, mostly women of color, directing and writing for me -- it's also my choice, to veer toward working with those people.
The blazing anger you have against Oh and seeming contempt for her has obscured the reality of how Oh purposefully seeks out projects with women to act with, women to be directed by, and to play the characters as they are written by women.   This includes queer and bisexual women.   But you are erasing all that because Oh has not articulated an unambiguous pro-gay, anti-homophobia position with the fervor and passion that you have for this issue.   I contend no one is in a position of such purity to demand anyone else fight as hard for an issue as you are fighting it yourself.

anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve And because you mentioned Sandra Oh’s prominent same-sex roles, I’m going to point out a disturbing pattern in all of them: they’re tragedies where the lesbian couple is punished via the BYG trope (literal death) or a break up. Every. Single. One. Here’s specific examples: Under The Tuscan Sun (2003): Sandra Oh plays a pregnant lesbian whose partner breaks up with her. 3 Needles (2005): Sandra Oh plays a lesbian nun on a mission in Africa battling AIDS. Lots of death and tragedy.
It's great that you did the work to do a deep dive into Sandra’s same-sex roles, but this is a case of being edgy without having a point.  Not one of those films was written or directed by Sandra. .  She was hired to be an actor and that's her job.  She may have some thoughts as to what her character might say or how she would respond, but she has no more power to change it on her own than a house painter can decide the owner’s home would look better in firetruck red than the light blue that was chosen.
Why is it Oh’s fault if these roles have tragic ends?  The answer is it is not.  By the way, you left out Tammy (2014) where Sandra plays the love interest of Kathy Bates.  It’s a Melissa McCarthy comedy and I haven’t seen it, but if anyone has please let me know if Kathy and Sandra get run out of the neighborhood by vicious homophobes or hold hands and bravely, but tragically drive off a cliff together.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve Nor does an affluent celebrity ever deserve my defence, especially not when their success is earned on the backs of LGBTQ folks’ passion, dedication, and money. Not when that same celebrity is complicit in homophobia and BYG. I don’t care about awards, race, talent, industry, eloquence, education, culture, religion, gender, age, or even sexuality–homophobia is homophobia in all its vile forms. And I’m going to spend my time fighting it, instead of propping up homophobes.
As well you should.   That’s your issue and you can fight for it as hard as you want and against anyone you want to fight with. That part about Sandra being an "affluent celebrity" whose success is earned on the backs of LGBTQ folks' passion, dedication, and money? That comes as a hyperbolic rant. Sandra Oh is not exploiting the LGBTQ community, but even if she was, why is she the ONLY person among the Killing Eve crew to receive ALL the blame?
You have singled out one person for all your righteous rage.  You are blaming Sandra Oh in a way you are not blaming Jodie Comer, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Emerald Fennell, Suzanne Heathcote, Laura Neal, and Sally Woodward Gentle who by your broad brush should be equally culpable in conspiring to bring Killing Eve to fruition and pushing an anti-gay agenda under the deception of a women-led production.
Tumblr media
Your absence of anger against those heterosexual White women illustrates how the selectivity of your rage is allocated.  You have all this bile to spill on Sandra Oh’s head, but not once do you condemn Comer for passing herself off as a queer woman for four seasons.   Not once do you condemn Fiona Shaw, an open and married lesbian for accepting the role of Carolyn Martens, the woman so desperate to return to the MI6 patriarchy that she orders the assassination of Villanelle, the most prominent queer character on Killing Eve. Selective outrage is the worst kind of outrage and you have carved out exemptions for Killing Eve’s White actors, writers, and producers while absolutely shredding the Asian actress as a malicious homophobe.
This selectivity does your argument no favors.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve As with any actress taking on a major role, Sandra has furthered her career and made heaps of money because she played Eve, a bisexual character. Her success was fuelled by a fandom with over 80% queer people, and her contemptuous, condescending, and callous homophobic remarks that dismiss Eve’s sexuality and Villaneve are not something I will ever defend. Yes, you’ve made that clear, but where does your figure of the Killing Eve fandom being 80 percent queer people come from?  That number seems high and arbitrary.    What's the source for that percentage?

anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve Aside of the government policies, Sandra Oh has spoken candidly about being raised by her Korean parents, and in strict Christian household. She’s very much a contemporary woman but she’s also had to grapple with her upbringing just like everyone else. You can’t ignore that aspect of her culture and race either. Finally, I love that Sandra brought her Korean culture to Eve’s character. It’s enriching. But in real world terms, Sandra’s homophobia does real harm.
What does Sandra being raised by religious parents have to do with your conclusion that she is homophobic?   You seem to be implying being religious equates to hostility toward gay people. What do her Korean parents have to do with this? Are they homophobic? How do you know that?   Do you know if part of her “grappling with her upbringing” was throwing off the shackles of her homophobic religious indoctrination?
Unless you have proof of this, you’re throwing out bait of implied religious bigotry into the waters and hoping a shark swims by for a bite.  This is just wild speculation on your part. You can't fight religious intolerance by the religious with secular intolerance.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve All this brings me to my final point, and it’s one I really cannot emphasize enough: Sandra Oh being Asian and Sandra Oh being homophobic are not mutually exclusive. It’s well documented that in particular, South Korea is still homophobic in its society, culture, and economic policies. Feminists and LGBTQ activists in particular have struggled since 2007 to implement anti discrimination laws that have yet to pass. If you want to talk about race, then you have to acknowledge that.
No, not really, because that's a cultural issue, not a racial issue. South Koreans are not a race. This entire line you're pursuing hinges on the condemnation of an entire country. This attempt to make Sandra Oh a proxy for South Korea’s homophobic culture might work if she was a native South Korean, but she wasn’t even born there.  Sandra’s parents were.  She was born in Canada, but if you want to use her parents’ birthplace to suggest their supposed sins were passed onto their daughter, I certainly can’t stop you, but I won't entertain this sort of character assassination either.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve Sandra Oh is also straight. And so is Jodie Comer, and Camille Cottin, although in Camille’s interview with The Guardian she at least had the integrity to freely admit she was bisexual and tackle the burning question of if it was for her as a straight actress to play Hélène, an unapologetically same sex attracted woman. I critique Sandra on the basis of her sexuality too, because her remarks harm queer representation. I find it hard to believe you can’t see that as a dire issue. Okay, so which is it? Is Camille Cottin straight or is she bisexual, because you just described her as both, so I'm a bit confused here?
By the way, when did Sandra Oh declare she was straight? I missed that announcement. How do you know which direction her sexual orientation compass points and what is your point if she is straight? Surely you are not suggesting straight women should not play queer characters, because if you are I cannot wait to see how you rewrite your rules for Jodie Comer.
Tumblr media
Or maybe you already have?
I've never understood why you exempt Jodie Comer from the stinging criticism you blast out at Sandra Oh.   Comer gets a total pass from you despite playing the character who was presented early as coded bisexual and then as the show went on became exclusively focused on same-sex encounters.  Wasn’t Comer the one who said in a post-Season 3 interview that Villanelle and Eve walk away from each other on the bridge?  That might be where Laura Neal got her stupid idea to open Season Four with the two of them split apart for seven to eight months and at odds with each other again.
That also gets a pass from you.  The lengths you are going to blame Oh while absolve Comer is transparent.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve And here are my closing points for you to consider, if you can: 4) Sandra Oh does not represent or speak for all Asian women, and she certainly is not representative of their typical struggles because she’s an affluent actress with tremendous, enduring popularity. I critique her along the lines of her privileged status that affords her the ability to overcome the hardship of racism comparatively easily to others groups. Her wealth and status eases many of her struggles.
It took me a few cracks at this to dial this down, but let me be direct with you @anevolutionarynecessity As a White woman, you are not remotely qualified to critique how Sandra Oh does or does not represent Asian women.   You have not spent one second of your life as an Asian woman. You know nothing of what their typical struggles are. The sheer audacity takes to even suggest you possess more insight into the Asian condition in America than Oh does is infuriating in its audacity and its arrogance.
Sandra Oh is iconic in the Asian community.   She is a beloved role model who gives back to and stands up for the Asian community.   I know after a mass shooting of Asians in Atlanta I saw an impassioned Oh stand on a street in Pittsburgh yelling into a bullhorn to assert her right as an Asian person to simply live and be here in the U.S.   She didn't HAVE to be there. She didn't take a public stand to defend Asians who don't have as much money as she has or isn't as "popular" as she is. She did it despite the fact there was nothing of direct benefit to her. She wasn't promoting a movie or a TV show and she wasn't doing it for clicks, lives, retweets, or to trend on Twitter.
She did it because people who look like HER were being gunned down and she was PISSED THE FUCK OFF about it!  Sandra Oh’s “privileged status” didn’t get her the role of Eve Polastri.   After reading the script, she didn’t even know what role she was playing on the show.  She said she had been so brainwashed by the racism she had experienced that she couldn’t even imagine herself as the lead role in a television series.  And here you come along saying because she’s made some money and has a little popularity, she’s been insulated from the bigotry Asian people face every damn day in this country.
How absurd.  How wrong you are to try to diminish and erase the woman who said, “It’s an honor just to be Asian.” and "Stop Asian Hate."
What even qualifies you to go at her in such a way?
Tumblr media
Nobody speaks for all Black people.   Nobody speaks for all gays.  Nobody speaks for all lesbians.  Nobody speaks for all bisexuals.   Nobody even speaks for the entire Killing Eve fandom.    Nobody speaks for everyone in any group.
But one thing is certain.   Nobody OUTSIDE of a historically oppressed and discriminated group gets to speak whether someone INSIDE the group belongs there and definitely not a Caucasian woman declaring an Asian woman who has some money and achieved a degree of success and fame has forgotten the prejudice and discrimination she faced (and still faces). That is an appalling display of smug hubris and this is the part of this entire discussion that actually made me angry. It is so unfair and untrue.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve If Sandra was a man or if she was white or in any other industry this would be textbook toxic workplace abuse. It’s the same thing with Sandra’s homophobic remarks–which by the way, I am not “reading into” with I’ll intent or hanging onto her words, I am literally QUOTING the woman’s words herself. Sandra is literally expressing herself and her own mind, and you are one of the loudest people falling over yourselves to defend her at all costs. Sorry, but I don’t do that.
Sandra is not a man.  Sandra is not White, but you are and so is Jodie who is for reasons unexplained totally immunized from any criticism.
What you call a toxic workplace sounds to me like honest disagreements on Grey’s Anatomy that occurred between an actress (Sandra Oh) and the showrunner (Shonda Rhimes).    If Oh were that toxic on the show they would have simply fired her ass the way they did Isiah Washington who DID make homophobic remarks about another actor on the show.  There have been ZERO reports of Sandra engaging in “textbook toxic workplace abuse” on the set of Killing Eve.   But by all means let’s dredge up some rumors about her interaction with Rhimes on the set of a show she left over a decade ago.   Apparently, there’s no statute of limitations on Oh’s bad behavior.  Behavior that was so egregious when Sandra made the TIME 100 list in 2019, Rhimes wrote this about her:.
One of the greatest gifts of my creative life has been the opportunity to write words to be spoken by Sandra Oh. The reason is simple: Sandra Oh is a virtuoso. She treats dialogue like notes of music—every word must be played, every syllable correctly toned. She’s always been an extraordinary actor. Her body of work makes that clear. Ten years of playing Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy made her place in the acting landscape undeniable. Her award-winning turn as Killing Eve’s Eve Polastri makes her legendary.
Her comic timing is priceless. Her dramatic well is endless. Her talent is a song to be heard. With her nuanced characters, Sandra Oh has chosen to fearlessly take up space in a universe that has not always made space for her. Now, the power of her talented presence makes space for others. And that is a gift to every artist of color who follows in her footsteps.
Tumblr media
Wow.  Such glowing praise from Rhimes for such a terrible human being.  It’s SO bizarre.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve Sandra herself mentions race wasn’t even a factor of concern at the beginning, until Sandra herself became more demanding as she approached her departure from the show. Instead of showing solidarity with Shonda, Sandra threw temper tantrums and abused her influence as an actress for a beloved character to pressure her conworkers into giving her the story lines she demanded. Again, all as reported by Glamour and Variety. Sorry, but until you produce the evidence of these alleged “temper tantrums” and how Sandra “abused her influence as an actress” allegations are all they are.  If Glamour and Variety reported this obnoxious behavior it shouldn’t be hard to find the link to those stories, please provide a link.   Otherwise, I can’t accept the veracity of these allegations simply on your say-so.  Sandra has described the sudden rise to fame on Grey’s Anatomy as “traumatic” and harmful to her mental health, but I suppose that is irrelevant to casting her in the part of a shit-stirring prima donna.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve You also mention SO and Grey’s Anatomy, but neglect to mention that she constantly pressured and fought with Shonda Rhimes, a black woman, the show runner, head writer, and executive producer. Glamour and Variety articles report that Sandra bullied the writers and Shonda into changing Christina Yang’s entire character arc to suit Sandra’s every whim. She was literally gloating about fighting every day with them. And the strangest part? It wasn’t about Sandra Oh’s race.
See above.  Proof, or it didn’t happen.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve You can’t be angry about the obstacles racism poses for SO and then reduce everyone else down to their own race, which they never chose, especially if they’re white. But once again, with utmost feeling, this isn’t about Sandra Oh’s struggles with the racism she’s over come or about her race. This is about her homophobia, and my reply to Anon was a case in point.
I disagree.   This IS about Sandra Oh’s struggles with the racism she’s overcome and her race.  I understand why you don’t want it to be about that because it undercuts your argument, but the unhappy fact is race does matter and it is relevant to this discussion.   You made it that way when you singled Sandra Oh out for your righteous rage but carved out an exemption for Jodie Comer who played the openly queer role of Villanelle.
The KE fandom has always had a marked preference for Comer over Oh, and I totally get it.   There are a lot of young White women in the fandom and naturally they gravitate to the character who looks like them and is closer to their age and racial demographic.
But if you want to tell me the obstacles Oh has faced to stay relevant and, in the picture, when Suzanne Heathcote deliberately reduced her to near-supporting cast status and sidelined her from an entire episode aren’t part of this discussion, then I don’t see what we are discussing has any merit to it.
Race does matter.  Race always matters.  You put an Asian woman in a role where even the original author didn’t make space for her, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge had to fight for Oh as her Eve Polastri and race matters.   You put an Asian woman who is older than the White woman she’s playing off against and race matters.   You put an Asian woman as the only person of color on the set of a television show and race sure as hell matters.
It only does not matter if you purposefully remove race from the equation because that doesn’t suit the agenda of scourging Sandra Oh for not speaking out against the rampant homophobia on Killing Eve that you have perceived as being present from the first minute of the first episode.
However, it begs the question of WHY is it only Sandra Oh that gets all this negative energy from you and everybody else evolved in the show gets NONE.  It also makes one wonder why you have largely chosen to hold your fire until the show concluded.
It looks like the blame has fallen upon the Asian woman because her face and name is well known and she was the most prominent person in the production.  By going scorched earth on Sandra Oh and nobody else that lends to the perception her race factors into why she and only she, is being singled out for this vitriolic attack.
Sandra Oh is being scapegoated.

anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve I was born during the Balkan wars. I almost died as a child from the bombings. I come from a homophobic culture, one that still hasn’t gotten any better. It is ridiculous and hurtful and again disingenuous for you to accuse every single white person as not speaking out enough about the racism SO faces because you see’ to have an axe to grind. I am not a typical North American Caucasian woman and it’s bold of you to assume other people are as well.
While I can and do respect the difficult circumstances you survived, you are still a White woman, I am still a Black man and Sandra is an Asian woman.  We all live different lives and how we appear impacts how we move through this world.    There is no hiding my Black face just as there is no hiding Sandra Oh’s Asian face and as Americans, we both have to deal with a racist culture.  You are not viewed the same way.  There are advantages to being White that people of color do not have, but this isn’t a “who’s got it worse” contest.   Not being a typical North American Caucasian woman does not mean you can’t participate in the benefits of being White in a predominantly White world.   Benefits that people of color like Sandra and myself cannot access with the same degree of ease that you do.  It is simply a fact that race and gender stand out in a way that sexual orientation does not.   I’m not here to tell you your concerns are invalid, but neither are you here to tell me mine are.   I DO have “an axe to grind” in regard to race, but I make no apologies for that. Your axe is just as sharp when it comes to homophobia and you aren't making any apologies for it either.
The blade does not discriminate whose flesh it cuts and if my remarks in defense of Sandra Oh have been overly strident or accusatory or seemed like a personal attack, I sincerely apologize.
However, I will never apologize for standing up for women of color when they are being unjustly attacked.  I've done this within the Black community and I have no reluctance to do the same when the attack comes from without by another community.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve 3) Your own lived experiences and your identity as a POC inform your perspective. I am not a POC, which is why I have also not seen it as my place to write 10,000 word essays about this topic. There’s no reason to take that maliciously. More to the point, even thought I’m not POC, I’m a Slavic lesbian woman. I was born in a multi-ethnic state that has its own complex, violent, harrowing struggles with racism and ethnocentrism and religion. It’s so delicate and complicated.
That which divides human beings is always so delicate and complicated.   But what unites human beings are we all have the same basic needs.  The reasons we shouldn’t be friends are many.   The reasons we are comes down to we both dug the hell out of a silly television show and a bond was forged.  Killing Eve was the place of confluence where all these disparate streams from around the world came together.   All our differences became secondary to our commonalities.  Now that the show is over the streams are diverging again and our differences are being pushed back to the forefront. We are not going to agree here.   Not this time on this subject. That’s okay.  I don't agree with your central argument or with some of the ways you are presenting it, but I won't say you are ALL wrong, because you aren't. We disagree, and we aren't going to reach a happy medium here.  I fundamentally do not believe Sandra Oh is a homophobe. You do. Two different things can both be true.  This is not a zero-sum game. Nobody has to “win” this.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve So please don’t be disingenuous. Especially when 2) Nothing in my particular answer to Anon even mentions Sandra’s race. This is not about Sandra being Asian. This is not about the obstacles she’s overcome. This is about her homophobic remarks, since 2019 and throughout the years. YOU explicitly chose to make this about Sandra Oh’s race. And that brings me to my next points. I made it about race only because you don’t believe it is relevant.   On the contrary, it is very relevant and the targeting of the only prominent woman of color while taking pains to exclude EVERY White person who might be equally or even more justifiably accused of homophobia can’t be waved away as irrelevant.  Why is Jodie Comer exempt from your critique?  Why are the White writers and showrunners and producers and executives exempt from your critique?   Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer have both only spoken once or twice publicly since the finale.   Jodie takes no questions about Killing Eve focusing instead on her one-woman play.   Sandra takes a question about Eve being straight and replies “No” and you say it doesn’t matter. Jodie’s silence is protecting her, but one day some interviewer who actually has some journalistic credentials will ask her about the finale and she will either have to lie, say “no comment” or give an honest answer.   When she does, let’s meet back up here and see how many words her response prompts you to compose, because right now the number is ZERO.
It is my position that a bigot does not go out of their way to be around or exposed to groups they hate.  IF I were to grant your point that Sandra Oh is homophobic, she’s a pretty contradictory one because she is constantly saying things no straight woman says and constantly taking parts where she is loving on women (usually White) instead of telling her agents, “Nah, I don’t want to kiss on any more girls.”
That’s not a defense.   She’s an award-winning actress who could just be running an elaborate scam on the gays, but why and why for so long?   Sandra is going to be 51 years old this year and she’s been in acting since her teens.   Why gaslight the gays so long if she really hates them so much?
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve 1) You and I have been good friends for years. You very well know that I write whole ass dissertations about Killing Eve. And so do you 😉 And you reblogged this directly from me, too. So why don’t you call me out directly? Why take cheap shots and imply that a discussion of Sandra Oh facing racism is somehow not on my radar? You know it is. I was right there with you calling out the all-white writers room. And yet, when they added more POC it didn’t fix the story problems or BYG.
After Sandra called out Killing Eve’s lack of diversity on-set (and by default in the writer’s room as well), Sally Gentle added a Black woman, Isis Davis as a staff writer.  She already had Kayleigh Llewellyn, among the openly queer writers, but that didn’t stop the show from killing gay characters (Villanelle, Helene, Fernanda, Carolyn’s father) left, right and center and it didn’t get us any more people of color beyond Yusuf, Pam and the return of Martin.  There hasn’t been a prominent Asian character on Killing Eve since The Ghost two seasons ago.
This shows it isn’t enough to bring in a Black woman or a lesbian when straight White women are calling the shots and making the final decision.  I just posted where Llewellyn said how she had to fight to get her story ideas in a room with nine writers and answering to three producers.
We’ll never know if Llewellyn would have given us all the Villanelle content we craved in a fifth season, but if people of color or gay people are always going to have to run a gauntlet of heterosexual gatekeepers to get their ideas taken seriously, there’s never going to be real substantive change taking place.
I reiterate that racism within the KE fandom is not the same priority for most Whites as it is for non-Whites.    I know you’ve written about this on your own blog, but it’s not as nearly important to you as calling out homophobia and queerbaiting when you see it.   It’s not a “cheap shot” to say Sandra Oh facing racism is not on your radar when it isn’t as important or relevant to you as it is for me.
anevolutionarynecessity said: @wearevillaneve You bring up so many good points here, including the misogyny and bigotry Sandra Oh has faced throughout her career. And especially the point that we all bring so many perspectives to discussions, including this one. There’s a few things I’d like to point out though, and I hope you’ll answer honestly.
When have I not?
There’s a Sandra Oh interview for Variety, post The Chair and pre-Killing Eve’s fourth season from February 2022 where she said, “The social media… It’s hard to gauge when it’s going to bite you. It doesn’t matter what your intention is, or what your reality is for you. When it gets out there, it doesn’t belong to you anymore… and I find that dangerous.”
This entire discussion, this entire debate we’re engaged demonstrates how terribly right Sandra is.  It IS dangerous.
Someone can take one sentence from one interview in one sketchy publication, and it is hung around that entertainer’s neck like an anchor.   I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer haven’t done any more interviews with Gay Times since 2018.    Even then there were two points of view whether or not Killing Eve and Oh were queerbaiting the audience, but the other side never got as much play as the initial comment.
I am a published writer with years and years of writings behind me.  It wouldn’t be difficult for someone to go back and find something I wrote that makes me look like the biggest asshole in the world.   Most interviews are not the complete record of what was said between the interviewer and subject.   I have no idea what the content was of Sandra Oh’s “you guys are tricky” comment to Gay Times, but I’m doubtful she was trying to gaslight the fans and bullshit the writer.
I try to assume good intentions until I have reason to no longer assume.   You believe Sandra Oh is a homophobe.   I do not, and that is where I'm going to leave this. There's no absolute wrong here and no right here. Just an honest difference of opinion without a middle ground in between the opposing viewpoints.

I love being called things like a bigot/ignorant/white feminist, when I’m legitimately a bisexual South-East Asian woman with a Masters degree. LMFAOOOOO. Sorry Opa, just venting in your inbox. It absolutely does my head in. Radical feminism is the prevailing feminism in non-white countries. It really confuses me when people call me a white feminist.
feel free to rant! TRAs need to hear from the women they're called "white feminists". they need to know what bullshit that is.

Velma Review
Tumblr media
Velma is a mature animated series which mixes the genres of mystery, comedy horror, and thriller. It is based on characters from the Scooby-Doo franchise and is an origin story, of sorts, for Velma Dinkley, before the formation of Mystery Incorporated. The series was developed by Charles Grandy. He previously created Guys with Kids, produced episodes of The Office, and has been a creative collaborator with Mindy Kaling, the voice of Velma, since 2013. This review will have spoilers.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the twenty-fifth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on February 17, 2023.
The plot of Velma primarily centers around the story of Velma Dinkley. She attempts to uncover the perpetrator who murdered two local teenage girls, Brenda and Krista, and circumstances behind the her mother's disappearance.
She is soon joined by school news reporter Norville Rogers (voiced by Sam Richardson). Her former best friend, and popular girl, Daphne Blake (voiced by Constance Wu) also helps her, since her quest to find her biological parents, draws her closer to Velma.
Unlike previous depictions, Velma is South Asian American, while Daphne is East Asian American, and Norville, often named "Shaggy" in previous Scooby-Doo iterations, is a Black man. This representation is reflected in the voice actors: Kaling is of Indian descent, Wu is of Taiwanese descent, and Richardson is a Black man of Ghanaian descent.
The only one of the original Mystery, Inc. crew who is portrayed as White is Fred Jones. He is a popular 16-year-old rich kid, heir of a fashion line for men, and said to be a "late bloomer". Despite these negatives, Velma still has a crush on him. Voiced by Glenn Howerton, known for his role as Charlie Day in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Fred is accused as the murder suspect of Brenda and Krista, despite lack of evidence which ties him to the crime.
Velma is differs from previous Scooby-Doo series by not featuring Scooby-Doo as a character. Grandy, one of the show's executive producers, said that the show's staff struggled to find a take on this beloved dog. This coincided with Warner Bros. Animation telling them "Hey, you can’t use the dog", as Grandy recalled.
Apart from Kaling, Wu, and Richardson, the cast is relatively diverse, more than other Scooby-Doo series, including Black men, Black women, and actresses of Cuban, Chinese, Filipino, Malaysian, and Indian descent. This aligns with the focus of Kaling's small-but-powerful production company, Kaling International, which founded in 2012 and described by Time magazine as telling stories about "inner lives of women of color" and stories of underdogs.
youtube
While in previous iterations, Velma has been in romantic relationships with men, her romantic attraction to women was hinted in episodes of Mystery Incorporated and in 2022 animated film, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! In contrast, Velma depicts her as bisexual, as she has a crush on Fred, and accepts Daphne's feelings toward her. Like other versions, Norville has a crush on her, but it is not received by Velma, as it appears. This leads him, to later, date a cool girl named Gigi (voiced by Yvonne Orji).
Daphne has a crush on Velma, kissing her at the end of the second episode (as shown in the video above), causing her to go into a bit of a panic. She has crushes on men as well. Her actions are partially affected by her two incompetent police detective mothers: Donna and Linda. Both are voiced by lesbian actresses: Wanda Sykes and Jane Marie Lynch. Lynch previously voiced a lesbian character, Mrs. Roop, in The Ghost and Molly McGee, while Sykes voiced a lesbian character Deb, in Q-Force.
This representation is not limited to Daphne, Velma, Donna, and Linda. Cherry Jones, who voices the mother of Fred, Victoria, is a lesbian actress, as is Fortune Feminister, voice of popular girl Olive. Others are unambiguously queer, such as Nicole Byer, the voice of Crystal Cove High principal (and mother of Norville) Blythe Rogers, and Shay Mitchell, the voice of Brenda. This series appears to be the first voice acting role of Mitchell.
Despite this, the characters of Donna and Linda appear to reinforce the lesbian cop trope, which depicts adult lesbian characters as cops. This trope is said to make such characters more palatable to so-called "average people" in the U.S., if these women, mainly women of color, are "helping to uphold the systems that oppress them".
These characters seem to fall into the has two moms / two dads trope, although such a trope ignores "traditional" views of family life necessitating a mother and father. In this case, Donna and Linda are the same gender as their parents, just as Barry and Randall Leibowitz-Jenkins are in The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. In fact, Sykes had personally served as a former NSA contracting specialist for five years, something which could have influenced her role as a police detective in Velma.
This breaking of the nuclear family is present in Velma's family, as her original mother, Diya Dinkley (voiced by Sarayu Blue), left. As a result, her father, Aman (voiced by Russell Peters), a lawyer, re-marries to Sophie (voiced by Melissa Fumero), owner of a malt shop in town and a pregnant model. The latter is often belittled by Velma.
While the first season spotlights Velma's long, and strong, friendship with Daphne, with Velma even proposing they become girlfriends in episode 8, it ends with everything up in the air. As a result of the events in the show's season one finale, Velma's personal life is in shambles. This is unfortunate because the writers had a chance to make Velma/Daphne canon, but chose not to. Instead, they went the route of Never Have I Ever, Wednesday, and even Kashimashi Girl Meets Girl by setting the groundwork for a likely love triangle between Daphne, Velma, and Norville, but not Fred. Such a development shows the limitations of Velma.
youtube
Velma has been received by critics, and those on social media, with mixed reviews. Apart from the diverse cast and LGBTQ+ representation, I was drawn into the series as a new fan to the Scooby-Doo franchise. The dialogue can, sometimes, be snappy, funny, and witty, while the plot can move along smoothly. The characters, themselves, can be compelling enough to make viewers sympathize with them, but aren't always this way.
Even though Velma is snarky, one can root for her at times, but not at others. The former is the case when she has horrifying hallucinations as she feels guilt for her mother's disappearance. The only parallel that comes to mind is Julian Chase in gen:LOCK. Although he is only alive as a copy of himself, as his original body barely survived, he faces internal demons, which manifest in his memoryscape, while he faces external demons in the form of the Nemesi, who are "evil" copies of him.
While there is some similarity between both characters, Velma doesn't face trauma akin to the terror Chase experiences. However, she still faces the crushing burdens and oppression of being a person of color, and is in part of some dangerous situations.
Velma sometimes cheapens its own protagonists, even making them unrelatable, at times. For instance, late in the season, Daphne begins a fake relationship with Fred so that both of them can become popular, even if it enrages Velma. Daphne also wants to become part of Jones Gentlemen's Accessories, and is willing to put everything on the line.
On the other hand, Velma acts awful to everyone throughout the series, even acting like she is in a relationship with Norville to fool her mom, Diya, who is recovering her memory. She is probably even worse than the toxicity of Penny Proud's long-time friends in The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.
The series seemed to counter past claims about Norville's supposed drug use, as he says he hates drugs, and is only shown to be a nerd who likes Velma. While he might appear to be a stoner, he is annoyed, in the second episode, when stoners are listening to his online show. Funny enough, his father Lamont (voiced by Gary Cole), has a design similar to what Norville looked like in previous iterations. The season one finale hints that Norville may begin trying drugs, possibly marijuana, at the suggestion from his father.
In addition, there is a focus on beauty norms, shut-shaming, human experimentation, and the over-bearing power of the government (especially the police). In terms of the latter, the town's sheriff (voiced by Stephen Root), declares that they can't catch a serial killer because "it is a ghost", not because they are incompetent.
For example, in the fourth episode, it appears that Fred becomes a better person after reading The Feminine Mystique. Instead, Velma just sees him as problematic and gross, showing he hasn't changed. His character somewhat improves as the series move forward, as he becomes more sure of himself.
youtube
The voice actors of Velma are seasoned, making the series strong in that regard. Many have experience in TV, film, and even theatre roles, or previously played characters on other projects by Kaling, like The Mindy Project and Never Have I Ever.
Furthermore, some voiced characters in Amphibia, Kim Possible, Milo Murphy's Law, Phineas and Ferb, Glitch Techs, and Big City Greens, six all-ages series. Others provided voices in mature animations such as Close Enough, American Dad!, Family Guy, Bojack Horseman, Harley Quinn, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Pantheon, and Bob's Burgers.
I had hoped that characters like Dandruff Tuba, voiced by Weird Al Yankovic, would be more prominent. The name was familar because he voiced Milo Murphy in Milo Murphy's Law, a character with so much extreme misfortune and bad luck that he is prepared for any situation thanks to his handy backpack. Sadly, he was underutilized in the series.
The voice talent of Velma comes through with actors like Richardson, who is best known for voicing Richard Splett in Veep. Also, Wu voiced the Mom in Wish Dragon, Lynch voiced characters in Final Space, Fumero voiced others in Elena of Avalor and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and Peters is a Black comedian. The cast of Velma includes well-known talent like Stephen Root, Ming-Na Wen (voicing Carroll), Debby Ryan (as Krista), and Frank Welker (voicing Fred's father).
Welker has voiced Fred since the character began to be animated in 1969. He previously voiced characters in a variety of series, like Star Wars Resistance, 3Below, Totally Spies!, and Futurama. There is, additionally, Karl-Anthony Towns who voices Jacques Beau (Jock Boy). Towns is a professional basketball player of Dominican descent.
Although Velma is not my favorite series, I somewhat enjoyed watching the episodes. Others may have liked the series as much as I did, or perhaps even more, as Velma broke records for HBO Max in terms of the largest number of people watching an original animated series on its premiere day. In fact, at times, the comedy can be subtle and strong.
The series premiere is a miracle in and of itself, considering the HBO Max content purge championed by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav last year. Two series (Summer Camp Island and Victor and Valentino) were removed from the streaming platform, while Craig of the Creek had its final season order cut in half, and Young Justice was effectively cancelled.
All five of these shows, regardless of other issues, had outward LGBTQ+ representation. Previously, the platform shuttered Final Space, which featured a lesbian protagonist, Ash Graven, voiced by pansexual actress Ashly Burch. The acclaimed Infinity Train, which featured Black and Asian protagonists in the third and fourth seasons.
youtube
The fact that the series survived this purge could be due to the fact that it was produced by Warner Bros. Animation, along with 3 Arts Entertainment, Charlie Grandy Productions, and Kaling International. Not only had Charlie Grandy Productions, the production company of executive producer Grandy, worked on previous projects with Kaling before, but an executive producer, Howard Klein, was one of the heads of 3 Arts Entertainment.
Another executive producer, Sam Register, headed Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe. He had previously produced various Scooby-Doo and Tom & Jerry films, Teen Titans, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Young Justice, Harley Quinn, and many others.
Charlie Grandy Productions was known for producing The Office, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Duncanville. The show's producer, Kandace Reuter, had worked on Scooby-Doo!: The Sword and the Scoob and Thundercats Roar, and the show's editors had worked on assorted series, such as Undone, Bojack Horseman, and Tuca & Bertie.
Despite all of these experienced people, in the entertainment industry, working on Velma, it does not take away from one major flaw: music. Apart from a scene in the show's season one finale, in which Velma listens to old voicemails of Norville, the music is altogether unmemorable, and the theme song is strangely alienating.
This is too bad because a Bronx-born Black man, Craig DeLeon, who composed the score of the series, worked with renowned directors in the past. Perhaps his talent was not used as well as it could have been. There were no amazing songs like those in D4DJ or banger songs like the theme song of recently premiered Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
This credibility of the show's producers may have been a reason that the series moved forward on HBO Max, just as Harley Quinn did. It could have been part of the rationale beyond the renewal of a Season 2 for Velma. Considering that the series became a "lightning rod for controversy" and garnered many hate-watchers, it may garner more of a cult following than anything else.
Although the series has incurred backlash, with Wikipedia claiming that audience response had been "overwhelmingly negative", it did not dissuade me from watching the series, nor even writing about it. Surely some of the criticisms, like the comedic lines which fall flat, or possible stereotypes have merit. But, the show is not the worst thing out there as those review-bombing the series on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, or others complaining about it on social media and YouTube, may lead to you to believe.
youtube
This season had Fred, and his family, as the manifestation of White privilege and wealth. It is on par, in some ways, with the snobbishness and narcissm exemplified by nouveau riche protagonist Kaz Khan in Neo Yokio.
At the same time, the series exemplifies the reality of how easy it easy for someone, especially people of color, to be swept up in the criminal system. After all, Velma herself is almost imprisoned by being at the wrong place at the wrong time, before she falsely implicates Fred in the murder.
Thee show's plot only hints at part of what the Marshall Project noted in their November 2020 post about trials in the U.S.: that many felony convictions on the state and federal levels are often results of plea bargains, and prosecutors are some of the most powerful players in this criminal system, relying on sheriffs and police as key witnesses. In many of the states, the Marshall Project noted, that judges can charge for use of a public defender.
In Velma, the arrest of Fred by Donna and Linda is not questioned, despite Velma's defense of Fred, before his outburst causes the judge to declare him guilty. Velma's father, Aman, takes Fred's case because he wants the money for his girlfriend, Sophie, not because he truly believes in the case.
The series highlights the inadequacy of mental health care in the U.S., therapy, and gender disparity. The latter is exemplified by the school Principal, Blythe, only having 50 dollars in the school budget to counter "centuries of toxic masculinity", which she uses to pay for an all-girls self-defense class, taught by Daphne's moms. The former is shown through Norville and his father.
I thought the story's focus, at first on experiments by Doctor Edna Purdue, the grandmother of Norville, a scientist who found a way to keep the human brain alive outside the body, was intriguing. I would say the same for the series plot about Velma's mom, Diya, her lost memory, and manipulation by a miscreant to commit the murders. However, it felt hollow in the end.
youtube
Velma reveals that Diya had been manipulated to recreate the lab of Dr. Purdue, recruited by Army General Henry Meeting to create the Special Covert Operations Brain Initiative (Scoobi), a reference to the original franchise. This manipulation happened through hypnosis by Fred's mother, Victoria (voiced by Cherry Jones). It is further noted that Velma herself was hypnotized as well.
Victoria states that she wanted to switch Fred's brain with someone more "ambitious", who she believed were "hot girls",  and keep the global brand of Jones Gentleman's Accessories afloat. This absurd plot cheapened the series. It was compounded by Velma's foolhardy attempt to get her mom to remember anything, involving massive lying, which blew up in her face, and her rupturing of friendship with Norville after falsely accusing his father as the serial killer.
While the social commentary on big companies which support politicians who "look the other way", as is the case for Jones Gentleman's Accessories, is apt, as much as the criticism of economic exploitation in My Dad the Bounty Hunter, it is muddled by the rest of the story.
For one, there are callbacks to the first episode of this series, when female characters were showering in the nude together, sexism by the police, and more. In the case of Velma, it is problematic that the villain is a woman in that it could send a bad message about women in positions of power.
Through all of that, the series seems to hint at a possible storyline for another season, as the police officer who received the file from Velma is killed while putting it in a "solved cases" box. Undoubtedly, in the next season, Velma will continue to use her "pretty good" detective skills, the relationship between Velma and Daphne may develop, and a new "conspiracy board"/"murder board" would come about. The series will likely have a love triangle between three of the protagonists: Daphne, Norville, and Velma.
This is because, in the season one finale, Velma inadvertently said she "loves" Norville, so he came to save her from the serial killer who is out to kill her, Daphne, and Fred. If this comes to pass, and the story straddles the home/school lives of the main characters, and doesn't come into more of its own, it will feel more like a stale CW drama. That would be a serious loss of potential in a story which could be stronger if it's plot had better execution.
In the end, I feel this series is not great but not terrible, as hate-watchers have declared. Instead, it is only in the middle. So, I can't fully, and confidently, recommend giving this series a watch.
The first season of Velma is currently streaming on HBO Max.
