That 90s Show

I enjoyed the show, but there was an element missing. Red and Kitty were perfect! However, some of the new characters were not fleshed out as they could’ve been, which made it hard to connect to them. I didn’t like the storyline with Ozzie’s boyfriend being in Canada. If the show continues, it would be great to see him have an onscreen relationship. Some of the characters had great onscreen chemistry, while others did not. That might’ve been the missing element for me, but it shows promise.

The cameos were fun. The second they mentioned the landlord, I was hoping it would be Fenton and it was! I wasn’t a big fan of Jackie and Kelso still being on-again off again. Also, there was no mention of Hyde. I understand that the actor is a huge problem; however, the character is like a son to Kitty and Red. It would’ve been nice to hear that he was still running the record store or was on a business trip or something. I know a lot of people would not have been okay with a recast, but I would’ve been.

I like how That 90s Show kept a lot of the same elements: transitions, Red’s sayings, the way the new kids interacted with each other, and some similar plot lines to That 70s Show episodes.

I’m also interested to see where Sherri and Fez’s relationship will lead.

I loved the flashback at the end along with Jay’s “BURN!”

As someone who’s adored Jackie and Hyde together since the 4th grade, it’s super weird to me that people are even surprised, let alone angry, that Jackie and Kelso are together in That 90s Show and not Jackie and Hyde? Take out Ashton and Mila being married in real life. Y’all know Danny is literally a rapist? I know sometimes it’s good to just ignore the actor’s actions and separate them from their character but that only works imo when it’s a show or series that isn’t being redone in any fashion. Like yeah, for T7S, Jackie and Hyde are the superior ship, by far. But the moment T9S was mentioned I instantly knew it would be wrong to even have Jackie and Hyde get an off screen endgame, because of who Danny turned out to be.

Sometimes the actor really does ruin the character unfortunately.

I finally finished that 90s show since I had to take 10 minute breaks throughout the duration of the show bc it was just too much to handle so here are my final thoughts (warning: it's mostly not positive)

it was just too disney channel for my taste. so many lines and their deliveries made me cringe, the whole thing was just a ball of second hand embarrassment (this is in no way meant to be a diss to the cast or anything, they're obviously great at their jobs but none of it felt natural at all)

adding to that I think that they casted leia really well, she looks so much like eric and does a good job at emulating his character

I really hate that jackie and kelso ended up together. it just comes off as lazy writing. and I know for a fact that if danny masterson wasn't an absolute cunt then jackie would've ended up with hyde. it's still better than her ending up with fez though, so it's passable

speaking of jackie, they completely reversed almost all of her character development from the later t7s seasons. they put her right back at square one in terms of her personality and just made her kind of annoying

I love that they brought back characters like leo and bob, that was probably the most nostalgic part of the whole show for me (they also should have brought back buddy morgan so they could confirm eric as bisexual and maybe have a flashback of them dating at some point)

that's it for now probably bc I just don't want to think about it anymore ngl. I'll end it by saying that I just don't think this should have been made, that 70s show was amazing as it was. sometimes it's just better to let things die and leave the ending up to interpretation. anyway that's just my opinion and I felt the need to share it

okay i tried really hard to be ‘cautiously optimistic’ about that 90s show, and i held my tongue regarding most of the worries i had about the show until i saw it with my own eyes. but four episodes in and it’s such a disappointment. that 70s show is one of my favorite shows, and while i’m maybe not as big of a fan as some of the other people complaining about this reboot (i’m not as heavily involved in the fandom itself), i did grow up watching it and i do know the show and the characters practically like the back of my hand. there are so many flaws with the continuity and characterization of the og characters and plot. i could maybe forgive that if the new group of kids were entertaining (they’re not) or had even a smidge of the same chemistry and magic that the original cast had (they don’t). a lot of the jokes fall flat, things feel shoehorned in, there’s little to no substance, plots are being reused, and it’s nearly impossible to connect the reboot to t7s with how much cherry picking the writers did concerning what they considered canon. overall, it feels like more of a cheap cash grab than anything else, which is really sad to me

that 90s show thoughts (SPOILERS)

what i liked about that 90s show

• ozzie

• leia being extremely awkward and naive… girl i understand you that is/was me.

• the show does make use of the ‘hey! remember this?’ a little too much, but i smiled every time they mentioned something from t7s. the vista cruiser reveal? i teared up!

• jay & nates friendship was enjoyable

• i liked how they did the ‘bits’ like they did in t7s, such as the 90210 one, the talk show with ozzie, and fez’s hair commercial. i don't think they were done as well on t9s, but i can applaud them for committing to the bits the way t7s did

• obviously it was fun catching up with the returning characters post t7s, especially seeing the dynamic switch of eric and donna being parents now or the ‘upstairs people’ (as in not hanging out in the basement)

what i didn’t like about that 90s show

they ruined jackie’s character again lol. fez mentions to kitty how he and jackie broke up- they went on vacation and fez finds her talking on the phone with kelso in their hotel room (implying she cheated). not only is that ooc for jackie, it was a little crazy to me especially considering the ending to s7 with kelso in the hotel room.

i don’t even wanna get started on jackie/kelso being together but know i didn’t like it. they really regressed jackie to her like… pre s5 self. she wanted to leave point place and make a name for herself, and instead she’s remarrying kelso for the 3rd time.

the show was a little too fast paced to me, but maybe it’s because it’s 5am. leia arrives in point place on july 3, and i’m assuming she leaves in late august cause of school. so it’s only 2 months of in show time, yet i kinda feel that the episodes were a lil rushed, but also it may be because there were only 10 episodes in t9s when t7s had 20+ per season.

in t7s pilot, the gangs group dynamic is really easy to pick up on. but in t9s has leia start as an outsider and then joins the friend group in the pilot. the gang in t9s doesn’t have a clear dynamic to me, and i don't really see how the friend group fits together. while in t7s, some characters werent as close as others (jackie & eric for example), their friendship still felt realistic and believable. the characters in t9s seem like they don’t hang out outside of the group dynamic, but they clearly do because we’re shown they do. scenes where it was just two or three felt weird, but so did the full group scenes? the only friendship i bought was jay & nate's friendship (they kinda had kelso/fez friendship vibes lol)

i didn’t really like jay and leia’s relationship, but i think it's just due to the pacing. the writers did a better job of setting up eric & donna’s relationship in just the pilot of t7s than the writers did in t9s over 10 episodes with jay & leia.

extremely minor thing: was anyone else shocked to find out donna’s room was on the ground floor the whole time? i’ve thought it was on the second floor since i first watched t7s as a teenager

also i’m sorry they should’ve made fez not straight he is too queer coded to not be

Leia should've had an established friendship with maybe Gwen & Nate already (they live next door to her grandparents after all, not crazy to say she could’ve met them at Thanksgiving or Christmas). It would’ve made her decision to stay in Point Place for the summer a little more motivated, instead of wanting to stay to hang out with 5 people she met 4 hours ago.

that 90’s show was really fun! yeah, it was a lot cheesy but it was interesting and i loved leia. the cameo’s were just an arrow straight to the heart with nostalgia and fun. and kitty and red were just perfection. i loved how you could see how much fun the actors were having together and how they did stay so in love as the years passed. and sure, if life was a lot different… i would have liked to see different things. but, it’s what it is and i really did like this show more than i thought!
