genuinely it's crazy how you can tell that ushijima's mother's family and their influence on him is like a fucking leash. like a goddamned dog collar. like something he was trained to wear. like, we see him with utsui before utsui leaves and utsui tells him good things!! important things!! things that wouldn't have made ushijima an asshole!! he tells ushijima that a strong team is one that has interesting people!! he tells ushijima that he'll combat all sorts of types!! strong types!! strange types!! new types!! he tells ushijima that these encounters will make him STRONGER!! the implication is that ushijima shouldn't believe he's the end-all-be-all because he doesn't get stronger that way!! he's meant to grow from acknowledging the strength of others!!

but then utsui takes off to the other side of the fucking world and ushijima is left with family who don't quite know what to do with him and don't quite understand him but still try to drill every bit of whatever they didn't promise utsui into his head, and the only space he feels safe in is where he meets someone who tells him that being strong is the only way to survive and it's the only out ushijima has, and so he grows up believing he cannot be anything else and that nobody should be anything else with his memories of utsui buried beneath a grave . . .

. . . until he's up against a boy who beat the odds he never could, a boy who helps him realize that there's more than one way to be strong, a boy who helps him remember his father, helps him remember no matter what you choose, wakatoshi, i hope you'll come to like volleyball, and ushijima thinks that, maybe, he's always had what he's been missing this whole time.

Takashi Shiina Blog Translation - Comicalization of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon

Takashi Shiina's new work is unexpectedly a work by Rumiko Takahashi (lol)!

It all started a bit before “Yashahime” started being broadcasted. I was working on finishing Zettai Karen Children, and it went like “There’s no manga version? If no one is going to do it, I will after "Zettai Karen Children”, “Joking again lol”. Finally, I was really given permission to do it. In other words, I was the person who came up with the idea of the project, but in the end I made sure of it many times with the editor in charge like “Well then, I’m going to take this to Takahashi-sensei and Sunrise. "Is it ok? I-is it really ok to talk to them about it?”. Something like “Oh.. oh…? Well… more or less, we have nothing to lose…?”.

Takahashi-sensei's first reaction was, "Shiina-san? Are you serious?" (laughs). When I started Zettai Karen Children, Rumiko Takahashi consulted with me about this and that, and she was very kind to me. So the manga is a way of repaying the favor . . . . and a lie, I just wanted to do it. I'm sorry. Because it's a spin-off of "InuYasha," right?　What kind of manga artist wouldn't want to draw it? (lol)

However, if I were to actually do it, "Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon" would be based on "InuYasha", so first of all, Takahashi-sensei would have to give her blessing. And since it is an original work by Sunrise, it is also a world created by series composition writer Katsuyuki Sumisawa under the direction of director Teruo Sato, with various restrictions, so they too have their own ideas and concerns about the work. I wondered if I would be able to bring something new to it, something that would make sense for me as an artist to be involved in it. Even if I could, I wondered how far I would be allowed to go by the rights holders. However, my fears were unfounded, and when I told them about the arrangement I had come up with, they readily agreed to allow me to proceed with the work as is, almost as freely as if it were Shiina's. How did the resulting work turn out?

I can only leave it up to the readers to decide what they think of the resulting work, and I can only hope that the people involved with "InuYasha" and "Yashahime" and the fans will like it. I'm doing my best, and I think it's not bad so far…but…I've made a mistake before…no, no, no…well, I guess it's no use now that I've come this far (that happens every time before a new series is published).
