How I get so deeply tangled with Bancoran and Maraich

Well this is gonna be a long post about my personal feelings toward Bancoran and Maraich's relationship. English is not my native language so pardon me for the mistake I make.

I first knew of them thank to a tweet that mentioned them as the founding fathers of Yaoi and Mpreg lol. I got interested so I looked for their information on gg and this was what I was introduced to:

Back then I thought their relationship was some kind of quirky and it was there for comedic purpose only. I honestly had no hope for the relationship to actually be fun and serious. Like, a cheater seme and jealousy uke, totally not my cup of tea. Yet I went in anyways, just to see how it goes.

I started reading the first few chapters and actively looked out for Maraich, I though Jada was Maraich, Bjorn was Maraich, every bishounen with curly, light color hair was Maraich lol, the manga's style didn't help much either. I continued read the Eng scan and thought the manga was fun, but still, I was only there for Bancoran and Maraich's relationship, I didn't really care about Patalliro and other characters lol. My mistake.

Then gradually, the relationship that I thought was just for comedic purpose turns out to have a whole subplot that developed their complex characters and relationship! They did not just meet and fell in love for the sake of it, even though their meeting was a fated one and not a very good first impression but still! They properly went through enemies to friends, then through dating stage before living together, then the whole Foggy London Airport arc, vs Keen, Figaro arc! Throughout the stories, their relationship develops so much. And the tiny, little details here and there from the mangaka can actually help us readers imagine how they live together offscreen. Man, I didn't even know since when I got emotionally attached to them. They are not just there; I actually feel like they are living out their life!

Maraich went from someone who became an assassin just so he can survive to someone who is readily to die for Ban, follow him to even hell and afterlife. He started off kinda insecure in his relationship with ban, afraid that he might become a burden to Ban or being thrown away. When he got jealous in the first few volumes, you can see that the most he did was crying and throwing small things at Ban. After he knew that Ban would not abandon him, he became more confident in his beating lol. Now he won't even be afraid to throw Ban out of their home or beat him severely for cheating. I see that as a development lol.

And Bancoran? He remains a playboy but up to vol 17 he actually did try to stay faithful, though it ends up not as we hope. He sees playing with beautiful boys as entertainment just like cigar or drinking wine. If you look at the details, you would think his character is going nowhere. But look at the big picture, you can see how more and more he became homely (?), especially after Figaro was born. I cannot describe how I feel about his development, it is something you recognize when reading the manga. I just really love how possessive he is with his poker face, how he instantly recognizes a fake Maraich by smell (Maraich is always smelled flowery and fresh according to him lol), how despite the tattoo on Maraich's neck, he loves everything about him. You would think Maraich is the more jealousy in this relationship, but Ban is even more possessive and jealousy, he mostly expresses it though actions.

After the Eng scan, I read the RAW with my broken Japanese knowledge and boy, I was so invested and hungry for more that I went to pixiv to read the fanfics written by Japanese fans there (they are really good btw, Godly level even).

True that their relationship is toxic and problematic but that is for another post, another day. I just wanna guss about them now. I just love how they complete each other, how devoted Maraich to Bancoran and how despite being a playboy, to Bancoran, Maraich is special and his only companion.

I only hate how in the later stage of the manga, the mangaka uses the cheating-jealousy gag too much, it is honestly unnecessary.

I have a lot of things to say about them but I guess I should divide them into parts so it could be easier for me to write lol.

Sonadow: I should like it. I know I should. It's a very typical rival ship, and a relatively civil one too. But I just find it so boring, sorry 😭 I can't get invested in their relationship at all, let alone see the spark of attraction. I think the issue is that I see Shadow as his own character first, and Sonic's rival as... fifth? I don't like him as Sonic's mirror at all, I prefer other rivals. <- result of playing ShTH before SA2, probably

Another nitpick I have is that usually this kind of shonen rival ship hinges on some kind of obsession, or seeing the other one as special in some way - something like "only I can defeat you". Sonadow... really doesn't have this. Shadow is just one of Sonic's allies. Shadow was mildly intrigued by Sonic in SA2 and Heroes but then he got used to him. I'm really not sure what they're supposed to see in each other.

Fandom behavior, of course, doesn't help - Sonadow is immensely popular, inescapable, and extremely prone to fanonization. Ever since I was a kid I hated how Sonadow almost always meant "seme Shadow/uke Sonic", and from what I've seen, the terminology has changed but the "interpretation" hardly did.

Back in the day I liked He Is My Master a lot, though. Hugely recommend it to modern audiences. It helps that it was a deliberate parody and breaking of the stereotypes of the time :P

Sonamy: I have a bit of a Wildly Inconsistent™ relationship with this one lol. I went from loving it as a kid, to distancing myself by the time Generations rolled in, to accepting it in a different form. I think it has the potential to either be a very interesting take on such a basic premise, or recipe for utter mangling of characterization to fit the characters into prepackaged molds. Solution: I don't engage with the fandom :P

The only version of Sonamy I like is one where the two are very close friends, engage in well meaning banter, and travel and fight together. The relationship should all be about fun, and trust, and appreciating how far they've come together. Despite how basic it looks, I reject the "settling down and having kids" scenario.

Perhaps I'm cheating :P but I think Sonamy can be cute without sacrificing their personalities that have IMO interesting similarities and parallels.

Whispangle: at its core, it's a very cliché "shy girl/bubbly girl" ship, not my thing but it could have worked out nicely. The scene where Whisper opened up about her past with Tangle and she offered her support, showing emotional intelligence despite her antics, is honestly nice.

It could have worked out nicely. Then IDW proceeded to shit on Whisper at every moment, turning Tangle into an utter insensitive dumbass who blurted out the name of her bestie's dead comrades for literal cool points and she got away with a "oopsie daisy" while Whisper had to profusely apologize for daring to still have PTSD over it. And I didn't forget how then the Duo fiasco ended with Whisper being artificially humiliated just so that Tangle could hug her, give me a break. Terrible. Whisper deserves a better friend.

I have no issue with the concept of Tangled OCs (god knows I've made my fair share of fandom OCs in my day), but I admittedly don't pay attention to most of them, primarily because the vast majority of them were created to ship with characters (usually Varian), and I'm just not interested in that.

My favorite OCs belong to people who are no longer on Tumblr, so this goes out to them and everyone who remembers them:

His Favorite - a comedic story of the popular high schooler dating the least popular high schooler. The popular guy is pretty arrogant and the less popular guy is pretty sassy. Tropey at times, contains tsunderes but enjoyable. TW: Sexual harassment outside the main couple

Simplified Perverted Romance - A story about a masochistic delinquent and the guy he ropes into his sex stuff.  To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of this story.  While the seme is petty, jealous, and shallow the bottom is straight up abusive.  He rapes him and then manipulates and blames him into staying with him. TW: Violence, rape, abusive behavior

I Shall Never Return - This is a bit of melodramatic early 90s cheese. I will say MAYBE A STRETCH to consider this asshole/asshole.  However one is clearly a self-interested asshole at the beginning. The other isn’t so much as a straight-forward asshole, but he doesn’t communicate, copes poorly, and cheats.  So it’s a bit less of asshole/wilting flower but more like asshole/self-pitying, self-interested jack-off? IDK TW: Gang-rape, rape, abuse, suicide, dub-con, slut-shaming

Samejima and Sasahara-kun - I wouldn't call this asshole/asshole. But it is extremely dumbass/dumbass which I think is a related and beloved genre. Two co-workers very awkwardly stumble through a relationship.

It is (to date) the only Thai BL (of c.300 watched) that I’ve rated 10/10 predominantly on the basis of its story structure. That said it is also very well cast (and it’s a BIG cast), with solid production values, beautiful food, powerful themes, and enduring pair branding.

A Tale of Thousand Stars

With great casting and cinematography this drama nods at BL tropes but manages to elevate them (and itself) with a strong mature story concept about a spoiled rich kid who gets a heart transplant and becomes a teacher it order to pay out survivor’s guilt. On the way he falls in love with a local park ranger and contends with his own classism and escapist tendencies. Everyone seemed to perfectly suit their roles and GMMTV made the most out of its stable. Combined with excellent production (and post production) values, 1000 Stars is without question GMMTV’s most mature, charming, and smart BL series. I think it should go down as one of the top BLs of all time. I feel safe recommending this one to friends and non BL watchers.

My School President

Thai 2023

GMMTV gave us a classic high school set Thai BL with tropes like messy boys singing their feelings that made this one Love Sick for the modern age with all the gentle sweetness and pining ache, but none of the dated damaging tropes or issues. Yes, we’ve seen it all before, but I still ADORED this. And there is a lot to be said for the classics being re-executed perfectly. Who let my BL be this wholesome and funny? This show was fantastic, it’s only flaw was the singing (and that’s my baggage). My favourite GMMTV BL offering to date. And yes, I've watched them ALL.

The Sign

Thai 2024

This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, PNR, fated mates, police procedural, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and slasher. It’s the king of genre mash-up chaos. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it. Was it a crazy unhinged mess +1 roll for damage? Yes. Yes it was. Did it manage to hold all those tangled threads together? No it did not. Was it also a charming, sexy, engaging, non-stop piece of entertainment? Sure thing. I think this show is basically my KinnPorsche, and frankly I’ve been chasing that dragon naga since KP aired. Is it perfect? No. But it is balls to the wall FUN.

This was GMMTV’s flagship BL and it started 2022 on a BANG (okay no actual banging but you know what I mean), starring heavy hitters Ohm & Nanon in a pitch perfect university Romeo & Romeo masterpiece that will give you domesticity meets pain whiplash throughout and jet lag at the end. Some of the friendship and family dynamics are overworked, but it has great production values, killer acting, and some conscious effort to correct for half a decade of Thai BL’s anti-queer mistakes. I did a watch along for this one.

Oxygen

Thai 2020

Softest seme in the universe sings his affection to the older boy at the cafe. Let the slow burn courting commence. Oxygen uses every BL trope in the playbook for one of the gentlest lowest angst BLs ever made. It’s a hyung romance (younger boy courts older boy) but very very earnest about it. Am I biased? Sure. This is probably one of my biggest comfort watches.

Lovely Writer

Thai 2021

Thailand criticizes itself and the BL industry while simultaneously giving us classic seme/uke with great chemistry in a one-two punch of “we love it, but are we supposed to? and must we think this hard, yet enjoy it SO MUCH?” This show won’t appeal or make sense to those who don’t already have at least some Thai BL watching experience. What Lovely Writer does, at heart, is reexamine Thai BL has done to queerness, but in a very gentle way that has more to do with Thai BL growing up than any actual queer authenticity. It’s not parody or pastiche, but it is self reflective and trying to correct for some chronic mistakes. Whether it is ultimately successful in this matter is going to depend on the watcher’s relationship to BL and queer identity. But that’s what makes this show beautiful, interesting, and thought provoking. And I, for one, applaud the effort even if I didn’t personally connect to all the characters.

Not Me

How do you say antidisestablishmentarianism in Thai? + hot boys kissing who probably shouldn't be and convoluted soap opera identical twins plot... someone at GMMTV thought it made sense, we just here for the tattoos and the the Pride scene.

Okay so, GMMTV gave us a dark disestablishment narrative (in a time of civil unrest) with established queer award-winning director Anucha and starring the biggest guns of BL, OffGun and THIS WAS AN AMAZING THING to get to experience at the time - nerve racking but remarkable. But was it ACTUALLY BL? It certainly has a lot of BL elements, but in the end romance was not what this show was about, or even what it was genuinely trying to be as a performance piece. Still a remarkable moment in Thai cinema, certainly worth your time. Don’t worry, it all ends happily.

My Day

Pinoy 2020

The set up on this one is enemies (also boss/employee) and they don’t like each other to start. But that gets resolved pretty quickly. And then they are some of the cutest, hottest, and best boyfriends ever. This is an under-appreciated BL, IMHO.

Strongberry are true masters of their craft and yet A First Love Story is still one of the best things they have ever produced. It’s the only microfilm every to make one of my year end top ten list. It’s two episodes of about 8 minutes each that manage to perfectly portray the sweetest friends-to-lovers confession ever. It’s joyful, and gentle with its characters, and a little hot. How on earth do they manage to leave us yearning for more yet completely satisfied at the same time? It’s like the perfect amuse-bouche, that one finger food at that one cocktail party that you will never forget. You are a ridiculous human if you haven’t spent 16 minutes with these two boys. Go watch it now. Or go watch it again. It’s time VERY well spent.

How about a soft, holiday related drabble?👀 I was thinking the scenario could be, Dabi's s/o really wants to go see the Christmas light displays. Dabi has never really caring to celebrate such holidays, since he finds them trivial, but he gives into his s/o's wishes because he loves them. They go out together as a date night, hand in hand, passing by the Christmas lights display. While dabi is unimpressed/indifferent by the lights display, he looks over at his s/o, who seems to really be enjoying themselves. The yellow lights filled the place, almost as if they were trying to warm up the cold night. It was weird, to be walking hand in hand with a villain through a park, however no one semeed to notice. Maybe it was because it was pretty late, or maybe because he was wearing a hoodie that helped covering the scars on his face. Or maybe, people were to deep into their own thoughts as to notice some random couple walking.

Dabi's hand felt warm agasint yours, and his staples were not cold anymore, it was the first time someone was holding his hand and he was lowkey enjoying it.

A sided smile appeared on his face when he looked at you. You couldn't even notice him, because you were to busy looking at the lights displays, smiling wide at the pretty image that they offered.

"You look like a fuckin five years old" Dabi mocked and let out a low chuckle.

"And you look like a grumpy old man, all serious and indiferent. They are pretty! I feel happy while watching them, don't you?" You asked, this time turning your face towards him.

"They're just lights, doll." You make me happy, he wanted to say. "It's not a big deal" Dabi shrugged his shoulders.

"It's not a big deal" you tried to imitate him with an awful low voice, making him laugh again. "Enjoy a little!"

"I am enjoying it. Don't let my ugly face tell you otherwise" and with that statement, you stopped right in your tracks.

"You're not ugly, Dabi" Now you were facing him, slowly caressing his cheek. "But if you smiled more often you'd look prettier" you laughed after pressing a short kiss on his lips.

He lifted an eyebrow, looking down at you with a bored expression just to replace it with a huff. Dabi was about to say something back when the color of the lights changed. Now they were blue. Was it a coincidece? It looked like one, to be honest. He looked at you, when you turn around to get a better view of the lights, smiling big and with a surprised expression at the beautiful color. And he was right, you were looking like an excited five year old. And he loved it, the way you could felt happy over simple things, the way your smile somehow made his heart warm, and then... A smile was on his face.

"Dabi look! They're blue like your-" you interrupted yourself. "You're smiling" the words came out almost in a whisper, making him fall to earth again.

"What? No, I'm not" he furrowed his eyebrows as he kept walking.

I doubt we will ever get to yaoi-level of NSFW, but shounen-ai - which is 19 Days’ genre - can very well have NSFW content, too. Albeit it’s usually less graphic and the story’s overall focus is different. 19 Days’ illustrations especially contain NSFW-level of nudity, and some of them are at the very least suggestive in a sexual way: 

I don’t think the comic itself is completely SFW, either. I doubt we will ever see the characters fully naked or yaoi-level of sexual content because of censorship-related issues. But some chapters already have nudity. I mean, I think have lost count how many times I’ve seen He Tian’s abs by now. Or would you like to get caught looking at these panels at work or school (ch. 1, 130, 144, 199, 203, 226, 251, 276, 282, and 291):

At this point, some of you might come at me for sexualizing 15-year-old boys. Before anyone gets that far, let me save your breath. I know they are teenagers, but whether people want to acknowledge it or not 19 Days is also a work of boys love (BL). Just as the name suggests, BL stories are about male-on-male love, romance, and sex. Their main target audience is also girls and women which means their content (stories, themes, character designs, and art in general) is meant to attract and please the females. This doesn’t, of course, mean other people can’t enjoy BL stories, too. I actually think 19 Days is an excellent example of a shounen-ai that has attracted all kinds of folks.

But let’s face it, OldXian didn’t have to include shirtless male torsos. They didn’t really contribute to the story at any point. Instead, they did offer some occasional eye candy. And I never see people complaining about seeing hot shirtless guys until someone talks about sex and sexual content out loud like this. That’s when people seem to become appalled by the idea of someone thinking He Tian shirtless or Mo Guan Shan’s buble butt are sexy.

Okay, end of rant. And nothing of that was aimed at you, dear anon-san. I was just talking about it in a general sense. Now, back to your question!

There have also been countless genitalia-related panels, but for obvious reasons, they have been censored in different ways. Jian Yi especially seems to be a walking NSFW warning. (ch. 37-39, 47, 77, 88, 89, 110, 206, 275.5)

Also, there have been a couple of panels with skinship that isn’t exactly platonic. Often these moments are meant as setups for comic relief and can’t really be seen as NSFW. However, I think they still are sexually charged when put in the context that these boys have romantic feelings for each other. And again, Jian Yi especially seems to be quite forward in making his advances. (ch. 92, 98, 191, 213, 236, 253, 303, and 306)

There is actually one chapter I would like to talk about more. I think it’s different in nature when it comes to these kinds of sexual moments mentioned above. The chapter in question took place after JY accidentally got drunk at a restaurant and Zhan Zheng Xi had to carry him home. Due to an unfortunately tangled backpack strap, ZZX found himself on top of JY (ch. 165):

A couple of chapters earlier, JY had been called a disgusting gay, and he was clearly struggling with that. Perhaps being drunk brought it to the surface. He started crying and asked ZZX if he truly was abnormal. ZZX, of course, tried to comfort his friend, but soon the situation escalated in the wrong direction. JY touched ZZX in ways that ZZX wasn’t comfortable with which resulted in ZZX freaking out and pushing him away.

I’ve always found that moment both dark and sad. JY was obviously in a bad mental place and was probably looking for some sort of reassurance and comfort. XXZ had been supportive of JY coming out to him, but JY didn’t seem to be convinced he wasn’t disgusted by him after all. ZZX was the one person JY didn’t want to reject him in that sense. The thing was, though, ZZX wasn’t rejecting JY liking men (or him) but was far from being ready for JY coming on to him like that.

In my opinion, JY’s kiss and advances were borderline NSFW but more importantly, I think that moment was a good example of NSFW content being utilized to build the overall theme. It wasn’t about two cute guys getting physical but rather about JY’s insecurities, need for acceptance, and longterm unrequited feelings for ZZX that had only very recently come to light. Just because something is NSFW in the sexual sense, it shouldn’t mean we can overlook or forget the other story elements those moments include.

To me, it seems that talking about the NSFW aspect of 19 Days is somewhat frowned upon in the fandom Discourse™. Kind of in the same way as talking about the characters’ potential sexual orientations or ukes and semes. People tend to get annoyed and say it doesn’t matter. I relate with the annoyance somewhat. Because often it seems the theme and significance of the moment at hand are being ignored when readers only focus on wondering “so when are they gonna fuck?”. I’ve found that a bit frustrating, to be honest.

But overall, I don’t agree with the mentality of brushing some questions off because “they don’t matter”. I have found that people tend to say that when they don’t like others talking/debating about something and wish the topic wasn’t brought up anymore. It might not matter to all readers, but shutting down conversation and discouraging others from sharing their interpretations is never okay in my books. It’s fine if you don’t want to talk about something but I don’t think you should go around complaining about others talking about it. Especially in their own posts, and especially if you don’t have anything else to say other than “it doesn’t matter”.

I firmly believe sexualities and sex are most definitely relevant themes in 19 Days. It’s a story about teenagers discovering themselves and falling in love, after all. Among other themes as well, of course.

To answer your question, dear anon-san, I think 19 Days is already somewhat NSFW. The official illustrations especially seem to be quite..revealing at times. I doubt it will get much more graphic, though, because of OX having to struggle with the censorship as is. And to have actual yaoi-level NSFW content in the comic in its current timeline wouldn’t fit the pacing. However, I’m interested in seeing will the future-related chapters ever give us more sexual content when the boys are older and their respective relationships have developed more.

I never thought I would write this long of an answer to your question. Turns out I feel surprisingly passionate about this. So, thank you very much for this, dear anon-san! I’m going to check how many people have unfollowed me now after this post.

Lords and their Knights: When FE Chivalry Goes Gay

@mwritesink prompted me to write about my favorite tropes in FE and how they evolved over the course of the series. I already crossed a few others off in an earlier post, but this one is a particular favorite of mine where M/M romance in this series is concerned and one I felt had enough examples to constitute a piece of its own. Let it not be said that this is merely the gay variation on the well-worn heterosexual romance trope of a lady and her knight (ex. Eirika/Seth), because negotiating the fundamental power imbalance in this type of relationship takes on different dimensions when both parties are male. I draw a closer comparison to courtly love, which in the traditional sense is also socially transgressive (being adulterous) and not consummated via marriage or other public means...which in FE terms means an S support and possibly a eugenics baby. A vassal in love with his lord rather than his lord’s wife is not only cutting the female intermediary out of what can already be a very homoromatic scenario, but it’s directly tangling together a kind of martial romantic love and ideas about what knighthood/vassalage even is or ought to be - two topics FE loves to explore. I’ve therefore compiled a few of the most notable examples of this trope across the series to talk about in more detail, because if one is willing to be liberal with subtext there’s surprisingly quite a few to pick from.

(And yeah, this is also in part because I like hot rich men who take orders, and this series already has plenty of gay or otherwise ambiguously non-straight mages, thieves, archers, and their ilk without my help.)

The Sad Gay Knight: Quan/Finn

This one I’ve talked about before in a fair amount of depth, from my hopes for how a Genealogy remake will treat Finn to speculation on just what Quan got out of this relationship besides a devoted retainer and (we may assume) a nice piece of ass. The summary here is that Finn’s love for Quan supersedes anything he’s shown to feel for any of the various women he can hook up with and quite frankly astonishes in its ramifications for the future of Leonster and Thracia as a whole. It’s poignant, adulterous (but Ethlyn’s probably ok with it?), and messy as all hell once you factor in whatever’s up with Glade and whatever Lachesis wasn’t feeling about the whole situation. It is also, naturally, very sad; Finn loses his lord when he’s only around eighteen, and with their kingdom collapsing around him and the entire continent consumed by war he dedicates the next twenty years of his life to raising Quan’s son to be the king Quan himself had wanted to be. And for all his labor he apparently derives no lasting satisfaction, spending his epilogue wandering around the Yied desert and at last returning only to (possibly) pen the history he’s helped to make. 

Finn is the embodiment of knighthood loyal unto and beyond death, and that paired with all the romantic and erotic subtext surrounding the two of them - Finn as Quan’s treasured favorite, his catatonia after Yied, the obsessive polishing of the brave lance that Quan gave to him, his inability to satisfy women in some vague way - makes them the defining example of this trope in Fire Emblem. I look forward to seeing how remakes will handle them; Finn’s presentation in Heroes is definitely cause for hope there. As for the issue of yet another story in media of gay men beset by tragedy and death, I did draw up a long headcanon on the technically crack pairing of Diarmuid/Tristan that specifically plays into the lord and knight trope while also allowing Finn a chance to pass his experiences on to a later, happier generation. IS is free to take notes, just saying.

Pretty Blond Twinks and the Men Who Love Them: Perceval/Elffin and their lasting influence

Moving on from Jugdral, I’ve got to say that I’ve really been sleeping on the original gay Elibean duo. Before Raven and Lucius (but chronologically after, because these games are out of order) there was another feminine young man with long blond hair beloved of a severe-looking warrior. Binding Blade gives us the bard Elffin, who in another life was Etruria’s Prince Mildain and Perceval’s liege. The Knight General takes Mildain’s alleged accidental death about as well as Finn takes the death of his lord and lady; he turns grim and humorless, and without a dying dream to guide him he follows the command of the corrupt revolutionary faction of Etruria with little protest. It takes learning that Mildain is alive and in Roy’s army for Perceval to drop the halfhearted Camus routine and switch sides, and the strength of his fealty not to his nation or even to his king but to the prince he’d thought dead is absolutely touching in the moment not to mention incredibly useful since the guy is one of FE6′s best units. 

Binding Blade doesn’t give anyone but Roy and his harem paired endings, but there’s still a fair bit to be gleaned from their support lines, both what is in them and what isn’t. Perceval and Elffin each have supports with women, but nothing remotely romantic - Perceval’s support with Larum is particularly amusing since he clarifies that her, ahem, dancing does nothing for him. Also worth noting is that neither of them can support with Clarine, even though one would think they’d make fine romantic choices for her given their statuses and physical resemblances to her beloved brother. Their own support line is quietly intimate. Elffin has changed since his near-death experience, and Perceval is still struggling to accept that their relationship can’t be as it was, that in fact for the time being they can’t now be a knight and his prince. Perceval also frets over Elffin’s refusal to see his father the king, and he later extracts a promise from Elffin to come home to Etruria after he’s done traveling the world as a bard, in one of the series’s several instances of writing what sounds like a marriage proposal in ambiguous terms. Per Elffin’s ending, he’s only gone for a few months after the war, so their promised reunion isn’t long delayed. I’m interested to see what a remake would add to their relationship, because as it stands Perceval/Elffin has an established romance arc that deserves a paired ending or at the very least more suggestive epilogues.

Further compounding their underrated signficance, it’s not too difficult to trace a line from Perceval/Elffin to a number of other M/M pairings in the two later GBA games and in Tellius that present some variation on this theme:

As mentioned above, Raven/Lucius is physically similar and performs a nearly identical gameplay function, with the pretty blond waif again responsible for recruiting his surly but protective boyfriend from the ranks of the enemy. 

Gerik/Joshua meanwhile borrows the character of the end of their support line and turns it into a genuine paired ending, with a prince incognito recruiting a swordsman to come work for him. They being who they are however, it’s all handled a bit rougher, with Gerik being impressed by Joshua’s “swagger.” Take that as you will.

Ike/Soren may be the defining seme/uke dynamic in Tellius’s overflowing fount of queer subtext, but Tibarn/Reyson smashes that trope together with this one and FE’s power couple unit archetype plus a dash of whatever the avian equivalent of furries is for wholly unique results. Although both of them are technically royalty, only Reyson is a prince by heredity whereas Tibarn presumably became king of Phoenicis by beating the crap out of any rival contenders as most laguz prefer to do. One can therefore read shades of a courtly relationship in Tibarn’s decision to zealously take up the cause of justice for the Serenes massacre in Reyson’s place. Combine this with Reyson’s characteristic edge that even Tibarn is forced to rein in at times and their relationship comes off as surprisingly more egalitarian than the sum of its parts. Oh yeah, and blond waif dancer + premade OP unit with ludicrous physical stats and movement again.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the conflict of the Tellius games Zelgius -> Sephiran explores what would happen if a gay Camus archetype chose instead to dedicate himself to an antagonistic lord. Sure, you can still recruit Sephiran via a convoluted and unintuitive process, but Zelgius is doomed no matter what.   

They Can Say It, But They Can’t Do It: Awakening and Fates

Ugh. If I must....

I’ve made no secret of my ambivalence toward FE13 dragging the series into open acknowledgement that same-sex attraction is a thing that exists, handled as it was with a lot of explicit homoerotic denial and an assortment of cheap gay panic jokes and...whatever the hell Victor and Vincent are supposed to be. Chrom/Frederick, hot though it may potentially be in fanon, is one of those jokes, making a parody out of a knight enamored of his lord and leaving it to mean absolutely nothing since Awakening’s relationship endgame is invariably S supports for time traveling eugenics babies. FE has taken cracks at the overly dedicated knight before - see just about everything involving Kieran from Tellius, up to and including his overzealous devotion to his superior officer - but Awakening plumbs the depths of Frederick expecting Chrom’s nude image to raise the army’s morale. Just..what do you even say to that, apart from the awkward sputtering that comprises most of their support line?

FE14, for all its stumbling steps toward something less completely offensive, fares little better in this particular regard. Leo/Niles is a deeply troubled albeit thought-provoking callback to the subtextual lord/knight relationship, one where it’s hard to imagine them finding a healthy way to navigate the power differential. Then there’s Ryoma/Saizo. It’s nothing special in localization, but the never-localized festival DLC involves Saizo’s ardent desire to warm Ryoma’s clothing in his cleavage. That sounds like absolutely normal behavior for a servant and not a rehash of Frederick’s shenanigans, uh huh. Fates may indeed be said to be slightly better about playing palpable homoerotic tension for drama rather than comedy...but only slightly.

Paving the Way for an OT3: The Deliverance

This is, incidentally, yet another reason to appreciate Echoes for doing so much to redeem the 3DS games in the realm of (male) queer content. Yes, there’s a large and unaddressed divide between the openly gay and very modern Leon and the heavily subtextual faux-historical queerness of the Deliverance, but taken independently the two presentations work for what they’re each separately aiming to be. Among Clive’s gay entourage are not one but two men who’d dearly love to be the knight to his lord, and Forsyth’s strong desire to put Clive on a pedestal evokes the earlier spoofs of this kind of relationship precisely because Forsyth is that kind of vassal, the kind that would read Ribald Tales of the Faith War and cry like a heavily erect virgin bottom getting his first taste of dick at the brief interludes of tender manly love between Quan and Finn. He’s played for comedy just as much as Kieran or Frederick are, and yet Echoes comes across as less down on the concept as a whole for several reasons, being that

1) Python’s snark over Forsyth’s attraction to both Clive and Lukas is genuinely funny, much more so than when it’s the object of these affections quietly groaning his way through them,

2) Lukas is also there, and his desire to be Clive’s beloved knight is not played for comedy at all but is allowed to be unrealistic and unsatisfying because Clive will never get it,

3) everyone wants to screw Clive for some reason, not just his subordinates but also his sister and the estranged BFF who dies in his arms...and the guy is shown to be unworthy of all of them, and

4) all the characters involved are allowed other avenues for romantic attraction outside of a lord who’s just not that into them. Forsyth has Python, Lukas has both of them as friends and possibly more later, Clair has Gray (...at least he’s not her brother?), and Fernand has a bad rebound that goes to hell in the manner of Zelgius and Sephiran but at least ends with him getting to reconcile with his former friend before he dies. 

The setup for the Deliverance’s overarching queerness is a bit strange as it rests on all these characters somehow finding Clive attractive, but nonetheless it makes for an unexpected and refreshing critique of the lord and knight trope, given a situation where the lord just isn’t that into it and in fact doesn’t seem to realize that he can be into it. It’s a good reminder that this isn’t a particularly good dynamic for a stable and lasting relationship, and that as hot as it can be it takes more than impassioned one-way devotion to make it work in the long term.

The good news if you’re into this kind of relationship like I am is that it’s a trope with some life in it yet. Echoes came at it strong, and prerelease information on Three Houses suggests a few possibilities for this dynamic in that game. I’m especially keeping my eye on Dimitri and Dedue, whose relationship appears to contain echoes of the original duo of Quan and Finn. I highly doubt there will be anything on the level of S supports acknowledging this type of attraction, but I’ll settle for some suggestive A supports.

and Daniel was sly; he knew your boyfriend liked him a lot, but that didn’t stop him

you knew he was doing these subtle gestures even when you were together with your boyfriend

a hand placed on your thigh when your boyfriend was at the bathroom

his fingers brushing past your cheeks as he fixed your messy hair for you

or his shoulder slightly bumping into yours as he was reaching for the bowl of popcorn

and it all seemed meaningless to anyone but you

because you knew his intentions and even if Daniel was sly and a terrific charmer to everyone else, he was just a lost puppy in love when you were together

Gutter x Whip

“Just what do you think you’re doing?” Gutter asked, his icy blue eyes widening in alarm as the other man crowded him up against the wall.  

Smirking in the most infuriating way, Whip answered, “Whatever the hell I want to.”  He leaned in close, his long silver hair falling around Gutter in a sort of curtain.  They were closed off from the rest of their class.  And he knew he had to be quick before they were discovered.

“The teacher!” gasped Gutter, just as Whip latched onto his neck with hungry lips.  If possible, Gutter felt Whip press him harder against the wall.  He moaned at the contact of their hips slamming together, already so very lost.

Whip trailed bruising kisses along his neck, one of his hands tangling in the other boy’s cropped raven hair.  He gave a rough tug on the locks, pleased to hear a helpless whimper escape from Gutter.  He had him, just where he wanted.

“Miss Thomas!  Miss Perry!”  Immediately the paper that contained the story was stuffed into a backpack and both girls blushed furiously.  Their teacher looked on, clearly not amused by their inattention.  “I know we only have a certain amount of sewing machines, but please pay attention to the instructions.”

“Yes Mrs. Blackmon,” they both replied in unison.  

They were in Home Ec. class.  Honestly, just a free extra credit class.  The room contained a row of sewing machines and even had a connected kitchen.  But the student-to-appliance ratio always seemed to be a problem and it was very common for a group of 5 students to wait their turn.  Instead of watching the cooking show currently playing, they figured that they would make their time more useful.  

Gutter and Whip were original characters created by Rachel Perry.  After a marathon of watching the anime Gravitation at Tara Thomas’s house, she was inspired to make up her own story involving a boy couple.  Rachel was not new to the concept of boys’ love stories, but Gravitation was her first anime that showed that sort of thing.  She rapidly became obsessed, and Tara was the fuel to the fire.  While Rachel was somewhat gifted with the written word, Tara was an artist.  They came together to write and illustrate stories.  And their favorite characters were, by far, Gutter and Whip.  

Gutter was a 16 year old boy, with short black hair and icy blue eyes.  He was what they considered the uke of the relationship.  Which basically meant he was the bottom.  A very flaming bottom.  His name “Gutter” came about simply because his mind was always there.  He was cute and added great comedic value to their stories.

Whip was slightly older, at 18.  He was taller and more fit than Gutter.  But he had long platinum hair and dark crimson eyes.  He was a typical seme (top).  He never bottomed.  A perfect dominant.  Serious, sexy, sensual and totally kinky as well.  It was very common for him to have chains or a whip somewhere within the story.  He really enjoyed tying Gutter up and spanking him.  

The story they were writing today was one of many.  They often took turns playing each character.  The format might change from time to time, either through dialogue only or more story driven.  They’d pass a spiral notebook back and forth as if they were taking notes.  But really they were filling a book of dirty stories.  

The bell rang indicating class was over.  It brought Rachel out of her thoughts and she stood up with the rest of the class.  Swinging her backpack over her shoulder, she looked to her friend.  “We’re still on for this weekend at Christina’s right?” she asked as they made their way to the door.  

Tara nodded, her blonde hair falling briefly over one eye.  “As far as I know, and if your mom is still cool with it.”  

Rachel’s mom really wasn’t cool with it at all.  Christina was a senior, 18.  And both Tara and Rachel were freshmen.  Christina had a large bedroom full of dvds, books, manga, anime, whatever you could possibly want, she had it.  And on the off chance she didn’t have it, she had a great internet connection and Napster.

“I was really hoping we’d get to watch Queer as Folk,” mumbled Rachel as they walked into the cafeteria and were standing in line.

Tara laughed, shaking her head.  “Yeah, we know.”  Her eyes twinkled playfully, nudging her friend by the shoulder.  Both Tara and Christina were more interested in the anime world than Rachel.  And often times when the three got together they would just binge beautifully drawn shows.  And Rachel could appreciate the art and animation involved to make X/1999, but if Kamui and Fuuma were not going to kiss by the end she was going to scream.      

“You’re just a yaoi fangirl,” Tara giggled as they sat down to eat lunch.  And there was that word again.  Yaoi.  Before Rachel even moved to this town she’d never even heard of the term.  She thought it was called slash.  But apparently that was only a term used to refer to fanfiction?  And yaoi was a Japanese word, and thus more associated with anime or manga.  Either way, there were entirely so many words to explain what Rachel liked but then none at all.

“I just really like gay guys.  Or bi guys.  Or questioning guys.  Any guys really, that may like another guy.”  She chewed on her lip thinking, but no one singular word that encompassed all of that could be found.  She knew it was different, perhaps a little weird.  But it brought her joy and the few friends she had seemed to understand and support her.  That was all that mattered, right?
