Starting here with Moiraine in her lovely blue dress, still wearing her Great Serpent ring. It seems even unable to channel (still debated as to whether she is stilled or just permanently shielded), she isn’t letting on and is still presenting herself as Aes Sedai.

Rand with his shaved head still wields his heron-marked blade. Come to think of it, we really haven’t seen him use it in the show hitherto, and there’s certainly opportunity for him to in S2.

Perrin doesn’t look so very Way of the Leaf-y here. Definitely seen some action. Golden eyes—surely a bad sign, per the Children of the Light! Not sure the context here, but he looks older and more experienced than in the photo drop with Aviendha. Except he seems to be wearing the same clothes? And the lighting is the same? Different point in the same sequence?

Mat and his trusty quarterstaff. The Two Rivers had competitions of staff(?) and bow, and Mat has enough practice there that he’s no pushover. Come to think of it, we also didn’t see Mat in action in S1, more just … running.

Notably, he seems to be in the same place as Perrin, based on the lighting and coloring of the building. Is he following them? Traveling with them, even?

Not really much to add here. It’s Lan. Could be the White Tower … or anywhere else. Nothing really revealed here. But it is an opportunity to look at Daniel Henney, and that’s never a waste of time.

Finally, The Wonder Girls! Egwene and Nynaeve team up with fellow Tower initiate Elayne Trakand, the Daughter Heir of Andor, which is technically the kingdom the Two Rivers is situated in, but an Andoran tax collector hasn’t been seen in Two Rivers memory, and most Two Rivers folk would be surprised to learn they have a queen. Isn’t the White Tower a marvelous place, where princesses and rural tavern owners’ daughters are equal in station? I’m pretty skeptical of Nynaeve’s story about the old Wisdom being turned from the Tower because of her rags—I would bet she wasn’t strong enough in the Power for consideration. Some people can barely channel a trickle of the Power, others vast rivers.

Anyway, they sure do seem to be going somewhere in the dark, and packed for travel!

yooooo WoT show didn't stop filming due to the SAG AFTRA strike! because the actors are Equity, not SAG for this production.

WoTseries revealed in April 2023 that production had already begun for Season 3 in Prague. The outlet then reported that filming had to take a pre-scheduled break in August 2023 before going back to work in the Czech Republic in September 2023.  Meanwhile, some fans are confused as to why work for The Wheel of Time was not disrupted by the Hollywood writers' and actors' strikes as has been the case for many other major movies and series. Judkins clarified, via IGN, during the show's New York Comic-Con panel that the scripts for all eight episodes of Season 3 had already been written before the WGA strike started in May.  As for the cast, the showrunner pointed out that "they're on Equity (the British actors' union) contracts, not SAG contracts:"

“We were very lucky that we had eight scripts before we started so we were able to keep going,” Kehoe said. “And the production team were unbelievable. Cast-wise, they’re on Equity contracts, not SAG contracts, so they were contracted and able to work. We’re one of very few shows, I think, that was able to keep going. We really were lucky, and I’m just very grateful for the huge team of people, the crew, because it’s been so tough for everybody.” In June 2023, Daniel Henney, who portrays Lan, told Techradar that they were able "to get a good chunk of [Season 3] done: "Filming has begun. We had the scripts done [before the writers strike], so we were one of the lucky shows that had them locked. As of right now, we're still shooting and we were able to get a good chunk of it done. But we'll have to see what happens down the road."

Alright so, I reached the end of the Wheel of Time last night, and it's honestly making me wonder why this series was eight episodes instead, I dunno, 13 or 22?

Looking back, if this was a mere miniseries, I could understand the truncated, "let's get to Point A to Point B" number of episodes. I mean, eight (as I remember) was the hardline definition of a miniseries if it wasn't six, five, four, three, or two.

The show spends a lot of time introducing new ideas, flashbacks, and whatnot. Some of it gets paid off alright, but the rest feels more like a "please renew us" ploy than anything beneficial to the story. I like the idea that this isn't just a basic generic fantasy world. That, at some point, the world reached a "Society If [Blank] Happened" type of reality, then I guess, did a whole walk backward into the Renaissance Fair. That's cool, I wanna see more of that idea explored in the story.

But, what was the point of that false dragon narrative outside of setting up the dynamics of the white tower (specifically, giving a lot of face time to the one Team Red character who's apparently supposed to represent Misandry (????), until Moraine threatens to snitch about her male side piece, which made me cackle)?

That's not a bad thing, but with the way the character got a whole intro, I would've assumed he would've got a lot more than "Mini-Boss demoted to Jobber".

They really dragged out the whole "Who is the Dragon Reborn" nonsense until the second to last episode, then revealed it with what feels like the intention to do a speedrun of a Souls Boss Battle, right down to the "Big Fight Separates the Group" bit.

I'm not really understanding the whole Nynaeve/Lan subplot. One character says, "She likes you", and there's almost zero interaction between these characters outside of homegirl's contempt and mistrust of him and Moraine. Maybe some fireside time with the other Warders. I viewed the latter as Nynaeave becoming a little less distrustful of people, but not a foundation for a romance.

I had half a suspicion they were gonna try to pair her off with Stephin (the white guy who lost his Channeler) before I even considered Lan was a potential love interest?

But now the last couple of episodes are like, "Welp, let's run with this" and on top of the doldrums that is Moraine's #1 Stan and Angry Ginger's drama (plus the guy who gutted his wife), I'm just not here for this nonsense. (Understandably, I know that moment was just friends slinging mud at each other, but they really went Felicity with the whole thing.)

Like, when the hell in the last six episodes before that comment was the audience supposed to pick on "Tsundre Nynaeve Has a Crush on Stoic Bodyguard and Edward Cullen Stalks Him Everywhere"?

(Makes no damn sense. It displeases me.)

On the other end of things, I kinda like how Moraine's story arc ended (as far as season one goes). Like, I didn't want her to lose her connection to the one power, but it also kinda felt like a consequence of every choice she's made in the show (so far). And, ironic (I guess????). Rosamund Pike really sold the loss, and Danie Henney made it worse with the "Can you unmute me, please?" And she's all ;_;

Throughout the show, she's had great chemistry with the five Ronin Warriors she picked up. The show certainly squandered the dynamic between Moraine and Angry Ginger (I wanna call him Josh, but that's the actor's name). That whole "Last Stand" against the Dark One would've been way more compelling if, again, the show's first season chose length over expediency.

(The Dark One could be an interesting character since Ginger didn't kill him but released him. But I get the feeling he's just gonna be a pretentious version of HEROES's Sylar, who was already up-his-own-ass to begin with if you get me.)

The show tries to incorporate that into the story. Moraine's general lack of interest in anyone except that one woman who trusts her immediately after learning about the One Power. How that sends her up Shit Creek when she realizes the Dragon is that one dude she ignored. To some degree, it works, but it also just feels like them covering their asses.

Ultimately, the end of the season felt, not like the end of a story chapter, but very television-y. Moraine saying, "This wasn't the last battle. This was just the beginning", threw me into a Dragon Ball Z flashback. Specifically, the one where Gohan hits SS2 and Dale Kelly (the OG DBZ narrator) is selling the "tune in next time!" moment.

I'll probably wait until the second season's done airing to watch all of it. Overall, Wheel of Time is a decent show. Not at all like Game of Thrones outside of how the writing seems to be taking visual cues from explicitly not white cultures and framing them in questionably malicious ways in contrast to the Eurocentric White Tower girlies.

Evolution

HOLY HECK.

Criminal Minds: Evolution (aka Season 16) is off to an incredible start. Spoilers and pics below the cut. Messer and the team have pulled off the tricky balance between taking us back to familiar places and faces, and finding new energy as well as new problems to contend with in new ways.

Below be spoilers.

Firstly, this is a welcome-back to the characters, not a plot analysis. I’m intrigued by the idea of a season-long arc, and I think it’s an interesting concept: how pandemic life may have altered crimes that depend on predator access to people out in public.

One comment I’ve seen online, about the psychological game the killers are playing, is: “Isn’t it horribly ableist to show the choice between permanent disability and death this way?” And this is my response, as a non-disabled person: I think the point was to make the viewer think that. I think the point was to make people think, hang on, would I actually pick death over permanent paralysis? Wouldn’t there be plenty to fight for and ways to live? But this is just me.

Let me just get the predictable out of the way: everyone is back, if only name-dropped a couple of times, and they look amazeballs. Age and experience are cool, network people. So far there’s no word on whether Gubler and Henney will sign on for future episodes, but they are clearly missed and not forgotten, while on supposed secret assignments.

Prentiss is the new Strauss, dealing with the budget-bleating Dep Dir Bailey, a spindly, grinning 30-year-old with his eye on a top job. He probably hasn’t been in the field since Academy, has no respect for Prentiss and has no idea what hell he is in for.

Lewis is her usual powerhouse self, still relatively fresh in her mental outlook compared to the long-time agents who have gone though bitterness and back together. She’s also dating a lady powerhouse at DoJ, thereby becoming CM’s first canonically queer BAU agent. The world does not end, and Prentiss’ response is that it’s nice to have someone so happy in the office - and that Tara’s going to get so much shit from the team - simply for making such a catch, and dating someone over at DoJ.

(Note: thanks to the eagle-eyed forum spotters who noted Tara’s plaid jacket and closeup of her nice short manicure as a little extra bi-coding. Whether it was intentional or not, you’re right, that’s hilarious!)

Which brings me to the next point: there is cussing! A lot of it! Because this is on streaming, not cable! Rossi and Prentiss, predictably, get to drop all the bombs, some of them fairly large. Not only is it disarmingly natural, but it feels like a relief. Of course these two have been cussing all the way through - we’re just now getting to sit at the big kids’ table and hear it.

Here’s hoping we get to hear Prentiss cussing in multiple languages.

Rossi is having a Truly Awful Year. Having re-married his third wife at the end of S 15, he’s been grieving (or trying not to) since her death from an undisclosed illness a year ago. He’s living in a basic commuter hotel to avoid rattling around his mansion alone, living on room service, a landslide of case notes, a couple changes of clothes, Alka-Seltzer and eyedrops and microwaved pasta (!) He’s abrasive and snappish and obsessed with the case, and the higher-ups are noticing.

Each member of the BAU tries to reach him, clearly not for the first time.

Prentiss’ intervention scene just slew me. She threw everything she had into it, all her affection and hard-earned wisdom and shared grief, and he quietly handed it all back with “You’re a better person than me, Emily. And I’m okay with that.”

(Confession: even with Rossi in the depths of grief, Shipper!Me is still jumping around going is it finally time for these two?? I have headcanoned them as being friends with extended benefits for years, whenever both are fancy-free and in the same city. They get each other on a very deep level and they’re friends, first and foremost. They could light a fire and yammer about old-school sci-fi writers all night, or shut up and hit the sheets together to forget a bad case.

The last scene in which they’re obviously and appreciatively checking each other out and cracking jokes about not getting laid is not helping.)

Alvez is doing his best largely a solo agent, since the team have been split up into single SSA units rather than partners. He consults with JJ regularly, and she backs him up in dealing with Rossi’s outbursts. We get less insight into his inner life than the others, but it’s clear he’s concerned about the team, and is trying to bring in enough solves to prove their worth.

Penelope! Is! Back! She’s living her best damn life, and has new firm boundary skills. As always, she has a lot going on - her Anglophile Baking Club, and mentoring small genius security network coders on the super-secure young adult chat site she developed, for starters. The look on her face when Alvez knocks on her door is priceless, as is their banter, picked up without a pause from S15. (I may have replayed, “Take your carbs and exit, sir”, a few times.)

Garcia’s turn at Getting Through to Rossi is magic. Whether she had the right words or whether it was just the right time makes no difference - it was a gorgeous scene. The power of Garcia is highest when she is just herself, not trying to offer well-known words of advice. She manages to deliver a sound waking-up as well as a shift in perspective. And clearly he hadn’t let anyone hug him in a long time. Clingy Rossi is rather sweet, but don’t tell him that.

In contrast, the lighting as Rossi leads Garcia back to her old lair is like returning to Kansas before the tornado. I hoped for a moment that her decorations would still be up, but as we enter, we see tidy piles of boxes, a rank of dark monitors on the grey walls, and a starkly clean desk. But as she logs in, each monitor pops awake in determined pastels, and we see her retrieve the pink post-it note that she’d left for the next incumbent of the room - not knowing it would be her. We don’t see what she wrote, and we never will, and that’s as it should be. It’s a wrench seeing her step back into the darkness of her old life, but it’s also a triumph. She’s still got it, and it’s on her terms now.

Lastly, but far from least, JJ quietly shines in these opening episodes as a stalwart, seasoned profiler, nearing the top of her current skill set and about ready for a bump up the ladder. She’s been emotionally anchoring the team while trying to work harder than ever to ensure their future as a unit, and it’s telling on her. She and Will hardly see each other, Henry has his first girlfriend, and she’s missing them all. But she’s resourceful as ever, and Will is his rock-solid self. They’ll find ways to make their schedules, um, meld together. On the kitchen counter if need be.

(If Rossi retires and he and Prentiss get together and JJ steps up as the new Hotch and maybe gets to stay in DC more, and if they get the jet back along with Reid and Simmons...)

Pitch for the next Supermassive game:

In contrast to the horror games, a heist thriller centered on seven bank robbers trying to escape the city after their heist goes wrong. Just like “Until Dawn”, “The Quarry”, and “The Dark Pictures Anthology”, the lives of each bank robber depends on the choices the player makes, as well as passing quick-time events. 

Also, it’s not just about keeping your character alive. A character’s storyline can also end if they get arrested. 

(For example, a scenario where you can choose to open fire on the police or hide in a convenience store. If you open fire, then the police kill your character. If you hide in the store, then you have to do a set of QTEs to avoid detection. If you fail your QTEs, your character gets arrested, which also ends their storyline)

2) Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye from the MCU) as Carl, the second-in-command

CRIMINAL MINDS: EVOLUTION - EPISODE 1 & 2 THOUGHTS

SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT!

I should start this off by saying, I was so super duper against this “reboot” because to me personally, it made no sense to do it. You ended the show in a satisfactory enough way (I didn’t love the finale, but it was decent) and it should have stayed like that. That being said, I do love these characters and therefore I wanted to give it a chance.

THE GOOD:

I enjoyed the grittier cases in these first two episodes, though the modus operanti in the second episode is somewhat icky, but I did feel like the last season of CM was way too network friendly when it came to the cases, like it wasn’t that exciting anymore

Queer Tara is grand, I think we can all agree on that

I am enjoying the performance of Sicarius, he’s already miles ahead of Everett Lynch

the performances by everyone, in fact, are great, in my opinion, you can tell every actor from mains to guest stars put in the work and that is great

I so enjoy seeing Henry and Michael and how big they’ve gotten, like it’s nuts that Henry is a teenager now technically

I love seeing Penelope taking agency for herself, and I am so sad she was pulled back into this mess after starting her healing process

THE NOT SO GOOD/DOWNRIGHT BAD:

What was the reason for killing off Krystall? It makes no sense and is just repeating Carolyn’s storyline?

Also, while I love Joe Mantegna and I have always loved his performance as David Rossi, there really is no justifiable reason for Rossi to still be working at the BAU - he’s already come out of retirement once, he’s going on what? his 70s? let the man rest already, I don’t care to see him acting like a dick and treating people he’s worked with for over ten years like dirt, I really hope this changes

I can’t believe Matt isn’t on the show anymore, he was one of my favorite characters, I’m happy for Daniel Henney’s accomplishments post-CM and respect his decision to not return but I am going to miss Matt and his family so much

I do not care for Linda Barnes 2.0 aka Erin Strauss 3.0, this plotline has literally been done before and we all know the BAU won’t acually disband

Same goes for JJ and Will’s marriage troubles, it’s been done to death and I wish the writers would just comitt to a decision, either get them into couples counceling or have them divorce, it cannot be that hard and shouldn’t span over eight seasons IMO

I don’t like how small the team have gotten and how scattershot they are, I know it’s been like that before but it doesn’t feel the same

I know everyone loves the swearing, I don’t care of it, it doesn’t line up with the show I think

Why is Emily being so left out of the plot? I miss the Emily we knew up to season 7, she’s become so one-note now

Danny playing live action Tadashi who never died and is now the CEO of a Hamada Industries

Sam is the lawyer for Hamada Industries who gets kidnapped by Michael and Ryan and is the damsel in distress

Modern day Lan who still dresses like that and has a sword and everyone is just like 😳
