i think my main problem with marauders meta at the moment is that (and this has always been a problem) a LOT of people underestimate the sheer insanity that was sirius and james' relationship. i think people play it off as like 'aw how cute, best friends! :)' and its like ... I DONT KNOW HOW TO TELL YOU THEYRE SO MUCH WEIRDER THAN THAT. in whatever way you take sirius and james platonic romantic WHATEVER you HAVE to realise they were NOT NORMAL about each other. they were cathy and heathcliff. i think the word that describes james and sirius' relationship to each other is OBSESSION. not like a cutesy best friends forever kind of way i mean talking about how they want to be buried next to each other kind of way. i mean that canonically their relationship exists outside the bounds of morality sirius thinks its FUNNY that james bullies people and vice versa. james only bullies snape because he wanted to amuse sirius. i think sirius LIKES all of james awful qualities (being conceited, arrogant, self-centred) which is a stark contrast to lily who canonically does NOT like the fact that james is a spoilt rich boy strutting around the castle hexing people for fun. i think james wouldnt even ... CARE if sirius HAD ended up killing snape at the whomping willow incident. not really. because it was sirius and every single moral value goes straight out the window when its sirius. do people realise that they were doing the most INSANE acts of magical devotion for each other as TEENAGERS that ADULT WIZARDS couldnt do if they tried for YEARS? why dont people talk enough about the fact that they had such an intense relationship that they excluded everyone else from it? why doesnt anyone talk about the fact that the two way mirrors WERE ONLY FOR THEM. like they didnt give one to remus or peter or lily. it was THEIR thing. sirius went to JAMES' house after he ran away. james made SIRIUS harrys godfather. QUITE THE DOUBLE ACT. NEVER SAW ONE WITHOUT THE OTHER DID YOU? the fact that people from their time MULTIPLE PEOPLE described them as jamesandsirius. .... idk i just think. its a shame people dont really talk very often about how insane and weird and unnormal james and sirius were about each other bc to me its the most fascinating part about the marauders era.

Okay I can't stop thinking about the Barbie ending. Cause like as absolutely hilarious it was (the whole theater howled) it also is the perfect button for the theme of the movie, coming out of girlhood into womanhood. (this is going to be a very cis reading because, well, Greta is cis and was clearly drawing on her own cis experiences - terfs do not interact)

The first thing Barbie experiences in the real world is being catcalled and objectified, which reminds me a lot of a passage from Tina Fey's book. She talks about how she went to this women's conference when she was working on Mean Girls and they were asked how they knew they were becoming a woman. And pretty much every single one said it was when some dude said something gross to them out of a passing car. It's such a universal experience to get catcalled at 13-14-15 year's old, when your body is only just developing. And that's what Barbie also experiences first.

Then there's the scene where the Mattel men (and they're all men of course) try to put her back in the box. The shot of her hands being strapped down was so unsettling to me and I think that was Greta's intention. Maybe this is a huge reach but it almost felt like it was a metaphor for sexual assault. And I don't think it's a universal experience to be sexual assaulted, especially as a teenager, but I do think it's unfortunately still pretty common.

Then she gets back to Barbieland and has to confront the patriarchy head on, has to learn how to deal in this world catered towards men, has to learn how to develop a sense of self even though she's become depressed by the state of things. Depressed by the fact that she's changing and she doesn't know how to stop it. The "I'm not pretty anymore" moment is played for laughs cause the narrator rightfully calls out that this is an insane line to come out of Margot Robbie's mouth. But I think it speaks to going through puberty, to not feeling like you're at home in your own body anymore (hell this is the same scene where we see the Growing Up Skipper doll, a doll who's breasts can grow and shrink at her human's will - talk about body horror).

And because this is a movie centered on the hero's journey, Barbie and friends are able to get the patriarchy out of Barbieland and work towards a more equal future, but the real next step in Barbie's individual journey is seeing her creator (and this is where the gender swapped Adam/Eve myth of creation stuff really comes into full force but that's a whole other post altogether) who in a lot of ways is just Barbie's mother ("mothers stand still so daughters can look back and see how far they come" !!!!!). It's her mother figure that gets Barbie through that transition from girlhood into womanhood, who assures her that while things might not be perfect, it's still worth experiencing. (And of course there's the theme of mortality as well, that what makes the human experience special is that it's not infinite)

So that final button of Barbie going to the gynecologist for the first time is actually just the completion of her arc. I saw some people being like "I thought she was going to a job interview!" and I think that was absolutely an intentional misdirect, but I don't think her going to a job interview would've hit as hard. (For a lot of reasons, but the main one is it's a very capitalistic idea that you become an adult when you start to generate your own wealth) It had to be her going to the gynecologist, something only adults usually experience, not children. She's no longer a girl anymore, she is a woman.

Sorry for talking about it but HL only has 26 spells. yall, Skyrim has 27 shouts in it, and i just checked the wiki- Skyrim has over 100 player-castable spells. I didn't even count the summoning spells, which add probably around another 50. Taken together it's probably nearing 200 different possible spells. Not only does the game about being a wizard and going to magic school have over six times fewer spells available to cast than Todd Howard's Plinko Horse Simulator, it doesn't even have as many spells as skyrim does shouts.

Now bviously what OOP said is stupid, but I think there is something here that they just slightly missed.

Jk Rowling made a tweet and people called her out for it and she thought

“I can’t be wrong. I’m JK Rowling, one of the most famous authors of all time. My series is a bastion of progressiveness, there’s no way I’m wrong.”

So she doubles down. She defends someone who said something similar, and people keep calling her out, and she can’t stand this.

“How dare these people accuse me of all this blatantly false stuff. I need to show that they are the ones in the wrong and I’m right. I’ll make a post showing all the evidence. I’ll prove once and for all that me and my people are right on this!”

And so she doubles down, again, and again, and again, and again. She defends people who she sees getting called out for stuff similar to what she did, but then she sees them getting called out for other more extreme stuff. But she knows they’re in the right, because they agree with her, and she can’t be wrong. Plus she defended them already, they must still be right. So she says they did nothing wrong, and agrees with their stances. Over and over and over getting dragged further and further and further down.

She hears someone say trans people are tied to the nazis, and she knows that person is right, because they agree with her, so that must be the truth, and she posts it herself.

Someone replies to her and talks about how trans people were killed by the nazis, and the burning of the Institute of Sexology. But that can’t be right, because that would make her wrong. So it can’t be true. More evidence is given, but that still can’t be true, she still can’t be wrong, that evidence must be fake, there’s no way that happened, anything that says it did was just created by trans people to try and justify their existence.

And so now she goes from making one poorly thought out tweet to Holocaust denial. It’s the same trend as the alt-right pipeline, just a different target, older adult women who claim to be feminists instead of teenage men.

I know this is what happened because it is the same thing that happened to me when I was falling down the alt right pipeline. Eventually I hit a snag that I already knew about and had beliefs on, but my “recruiters” disagreed with, and I got suspicious and got out, but at this point, when she’s made it all the way to holocaust denial, it’s unlikely she’s gonna make her way back out.
