Can you share some of your favorite bat facts? I wanna add more to my lil arsenal of cool random facts. :]

Of course! Apologies for the late response, I saw this at like 1am four days ago, forgot everything I knew about bats, and then fell asleep and only remembered I even got this ask today. Anyways! Some bat facts :)

Common Vampire bats are some of my absolute favourites, mostly because of their ability to run on the ground! They can gallop with their forelimbs and take off from the ground by leaping into the air and catapulting themselves with their wings, which is speculated to be how Pterodactyls took off as well! Most bats cannot take off from the ground, and must be elevated to take flight, so this is pretty cool. Makes sense too, since they mostly feed from the ankles of large mammals and so need ground maneuverability!

Here's a video of a vamp taking off, and here's a video of one walking around! I think their skittery movements and lil' faces are just the CUTEST, but I know I'm probably in the minority there. Also there's a large dish of blood in the second video, so fair warning there!

All three true Vampire bats have evolved special grooves in their mouths in order to act as a gutter of sorts to funnel the blood into their mouths, but the exact arrangement differs between them. The Hairy-Legged Vampire bat has a groove along the roof of the mouth, whereas the White-Winged and Common Vampire bats have lingual grooves under the tounge! Speaking of White-Winged Vampire bats, they're the only bats in the world with 22 teeth, for some reason (likely no reason since the molars are vestigial), AND they have scent glands in their mouths that might be used to deter predators. Pretty cool stuff!

Finally, all three species of true Vampire Bats are cute as hell. Look at these lil' guys!!

@makototeruhashihater That's a good question! I don't think there are really any answers in canon.

Toritsuka says that killing the human doesn't affect the guardian spirit, but he's also trying to convince Saiki to not kill him at the time.

There are a lot of open questions about ghosts in general, like what's the criteria for making ghosts, and what's the criteria for making guardian spirits?

It seems that most guardian spirits are elderly folk, so you'd maybe think they're people who passed of old age, but we also see a relatively young athlete, a youngish detective, a dog, etc. But we never see a child guardian spirit, so maybe age does have something to do with it.

Normal ghosts seem to come in all ages, and we know they can pass on under certain circumstances like the piano ghost girl. So if guardian spirits are a subclass of ghost, then it would make sense if they could move on under certain conditions too, and the death of their charge makes sense as a condition.

This is one of those things where you can basically pick and choose whatever makes for an interesting story for you.

But a fun theory I just came up with is that maybe guardian spirits can only move on if their charge dies of old age. If they fuck up and their human is killed or falls to their death or gets run over, they have to do the whole gig again.

And that could be a good reason why Hii's guardian spirit is so depressed and alcoholic, because he's kept fucking up and getting his charges killed and has just given up on ever moving on. Though you could just as easily say that killing the person lets the guardian spirit move on and Hii's guardian wanted to finally leave this wretched earth.

Gideon The Ninth Liveread, Ch. 2

Enter Harrowhark. We’ve got some extremely tragicomic visuals on the social dynamics of this place. Harrowhark with her herd of geriatric, wailing nuns following her around, tripping underfoot, constantly stopping to pray and exult her, a greek chorus adjacent to her loony-toons bit against Gideon's escape attempts A veritable flock of Penguins. But the absurdity of the image is undercut by the facts implied by it. Harrow is actually a big deal. Actually one of the last of the three humans-with-potential on the rock. Step outside Gideon’s wrathful POV for two seconds and it’s not hard to understand the provenance of the deluge of wet-rat meow meow Harrowhark art saturating this site; she’s got gifted kid burnout AND religious trauma AND near-complete social isolation from the word go.

Also fuck me I keep typing her name Harrowhawk. Like the bird. Hark makes more sense. religious connotations. Fuck

So Harrow apparently dug all night in order to execute her dragons-teeth trap. Mean, forward-thinking, meticulous, absurd willpower. Question for the class, though- Gideon (and with her the audience) realize her gambit a split-second before she springs it because she takes her gloves off and her hands are split and dirty from working. Did she deliberately abrade and dirty her hands, just to create that moment of dawning horror? Or did they just wipe out their shovel supply digging the big hole.

So here’s the big takeaway. This sequence, the start-of-book status-quo, feels to me like it’s doing fun things with genre. It feels specifically like a sitcom or a Tom-and-Jerry style of cartoon. I’m getting the increasingly clear picture of the Ninth House as a place that’s fundamentally devoid of stuff to do besides this inane scheme-of-the-week runaround. Gideon tries to escape, Harrow tries to stop her, the humans besides Harrow and Gideon are barely above the necromantic constructs in terms of agency and individuality, bishops instead of pawns, spear carriers and human props. 86 episodes of Harrow’s Zany Schemes. A little over three seasons.

But there’s also something really dark undergirding this; The reference to the mass dieoff of children that resulted in such a manageable main cast and such a paired down, interference-free rivalry; and there’s the allusion to something Gideon knows, some piece of powerful leverage that keeps the cycle relatively light and airy without Harrow ever just truly dropping the hammer on her. This is where we hit the first big point of comparison with Worm; Worm starts with a setting that maps to recognizable superhero genre tropes, and then works backwards to explore the material pressures, culture and incentive that caused those tropes to happen. Gideon feels like it’s doing the same thing; starting with a decent sitcom setup, but simultaneously working backwards to show how the greater context enabling all of this is not, in fact, all that funny. 

(The other point of comparison that jumped to mind- dead-enders on a dead-end planet, wrapped up in a zealotry-tinged, hateful but low-stakes battle forever and ever, which escalates from dumb fun to horror and tragedy as you start to get context for how the current set-up was arrived at- is Red Vs. Blue.)

Ooooh thank you! It’s been years since I’ve read more than a few fics for any other fandom, and I don’t really remember any that stuck out to me by name :( Not that you want to read old Danganronpa fic anyway lolol

However, I DO have a favorite DnDads fic! Which is Mine to Bear by pen_ultimate. Be warned that it’s very NSFW and has a lot of other content warnings. But it also has my favorite Darryl and Henry characterization everrrr. Holding the Line that Holds his Heart by trustycustard is another favorite, mostly because it’s one of the very first DnDads fics I read, and I love rereading it :) My favorite fics are typically long slow-burns lol so sorry about that :P They’re really good, though! Highly recommend.

Apart from that… 😬 I really need to start bookmarking stuff, because I KNOW I have a lot of oneshots and shorter fics that really stuck with me, especially when I first got into the fandom and was binge-reading every fic, but I can’t find them (because I never used to comment on things 😭)

I remember REALLY loving some from travvymybeloved (@officialgleamstar)’s Soulmate September 2023 series. I’ve reread how dare you want more by LordAxxington (@aximili) soooo many times. o_o please don't say you love me by nonbinaryjesse appeals to me VERY specifically lol (OCD Grant fic) and I love it. Come Home by @isadora-greenhall made me think about Nicholas and Jodie for an unhealthy amount of time HAHA

Just slap the Marechaussee Hunter set on her, press E and Q whenever you can, and make sure Furina’s Salon Solitaire is out as much as possible, and you’re golden.

oh noelle works super nicely with furina for sure!! wasnt trying to erase that at all, my bad - ive actually built my own c6 since who knows how long noelle recently with MH and fav for wet rock precisely for that reason too lmao

the reason i dont mention/count noelle in there is because the post was written mostly w my hopes for navias bennettless double geo teams in mind and the deal w noelle is that she has the requirement of constant field time in order to synergize with furina. and yes she has some flexibility with that bc 1.0 units dont lose infusion on swap but she needs that field time nonetheless.

and bc of that and unlike healers like jean, sayu, baizhu, charlotte and mika, noelle to me is less of an universal healer/support flex slot that fits furina teams of various compositions as opposed to an on-field unit whose own teams have excellent synergy with furina (kokomis another one). if you can afford the field time and want to utilize the damage + driving + healing potential they have to offer, its great!!! but limited in application still.

& thats why im still hoping for a proper geo healer to be released whod be more akin to those units i mentioned earlier - less field time needed, more frontloaded healing and preferably some additional buffs/support effects in their kit as well. bc even w noelles post-furina buff geo really doesnt have anyone like that ya know? and getting that mythical geo healer in chiori (since theres rly no other future geo chara leaked anywhere) would enable better furina teams for units like navia and itto who want that field time of their own (even tho navia needs far less of it than him). hell, even ning could get a bit of a glow up out of it lmao id love to use her more

also im just obsessed w chioris leaked design too so like. her being a geo healer that could enable double geo double hydro furina teams for navia would literally just be the dream for me in general JKWDJKDWJWD
