All I hear about it’s corporations “losing billions” and “gaining billions” but where is all this fucking money. Thousands of people are losing their jobs for ai, and everyone I know seems to want to kill themselves than work. New big store manager now and my coworker told me the last store manager apparently had a budget for employees bonus gift cards and no one saw a cent of that. We get a block of chocolate at Christmas as thanks as the higher ups get thousands in bonuses bc of profits and the profit come from us working our asses off so they can cut hours and add work. People spend more an purses than I make in a year and we’re the people that NEED the actual money to live. I can barely afford to feed myself while ceos make more money than they can dream of spending. They fucking invent new ways to blow the cash they have for funnies while still having enough to give their great grandchildren. IM SICK OF THE WORLD GETTING WORSE EVERYDAY. Everywhere I turn I see new articles about laws getting repealed, actively making shit worse! Years of hard fought progress thrown in the trash by the most greedy bigots, voted in by the most anti intellectual manipulated bigots. I hate this. I try to keep my fucking head down and do the work to survive but I’m furious!! And helpless to make any change. There are millions of people that share my view but even they can barely make a dent in it all. Why why why why why can’t things just be fair. And even if there is rich people why does it have to come at the cost of common people having to decide if they’ll eat or go to the doctors.

“Climate scientists have blocked private jet terminals around the world [for Valentine’s Day] in protest of ‘luxury emissions.’
London Luton Airport, Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam and Bromma Airport in Stockholm are among those being disrupted by activists from Scientist Rebellion, Extinction Rebellion (XR) and Stay Grounded.
It follows actions against private jets in Brussels and Seville yesterday, and one in Los Angeles on 11 February, with more protests expected in the coming months.
“It is time to ban private jets and tax frequent flyers to the ground,” says NASA climate scientist Dr Peter Kalmus from Scientist Rebellion.
“We cannot allow the rich to sacrifice our present and future in the pursuit of their luxury lifestyles."
The protesters aren’t just blocking entrances to private jet terminals; some are also stopping trains loaded with airplane fuel from reaching the exclusive aircraft.
A number of climate activists and scientists also crashed AIR OPS 2023, a business aviation conference in Brussels this morning, bringing a ‘Make Them Pay’ banner onto the stage.
Where are the private jet protests?
Shortly after 7am [on Feburary 14], Scientist Rebellion announced on Twitter that it was blocking the Harrods Aviation private terminal at Luton Airport on the outskirts of London.
“Valentine’s Day shouldn’t cost the earth,” added Extinction Rebellion UK.
Another XR group representing Farnborough in Hampshire, England claimed to have disrupted airports in the South East. They targeted a private jet base used by COP26 delegates in 2021.
Protests also took place at Milan Malpensa Prime Airport, Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, Sweden’s Bromma Airport and in Lisbon.
Activists in New Zealand and Australia also took part in the global day of action.

Why are private jets so bad?
Simply put, their exclusivity makes them a hugely inefficient way to blow the world’s remaining carbon budget.
Private jets are on average 10 times more ‘carbon intensive’ per passenger than commercial planes and 50 times more polluting than trains, research by the European Federation for Transport & Environment (T&E) shows.
“Burning tons of fuel for luxury flights is incredibly unfair during a cost-of-living crisis, and criminal within the context of an intensifying climate crisis”, says Inês Teles from Stay Grounded.
What does the Make Them Pay campaign propose?
Banning private jets is one of the demands of the ‘Make Them Pay’ campaign group, made up of citizens and scientists from Extinction Rebellion, Scientist Rebellion and Stay Grounded.
But aviation at large is a huge part of the climate problem, contributing around 3 per cent of all human-induced carbon emissions.
Taxing frequent fliers is the next step to creating more equitable airspace and a habitable planet, the campaigners say.
Sara Campbell from Extinction Rebellion Aotearoa/New Zealand argues that aviation fuel and frequent flyers should be taxed.
“The proceeds from this tax should be used to finance affordable public transport for all and climate reparations to those most affected by the climate crisis, who are also the least responsible.”
Tumblr media
This isn’t a new call to action. At the COP27 climate summit last year, the Least Developed Countries (LDC) group (representing the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries) also proposed a global aviation tax in order to help pay for climate 'loss and damage' funds.
Studies show that we could raise in excess of $100 billion (€92.8 billion) a year this way.
“I'm an aviation worker,” says Finlay Asher, an aerospace engineer taking part in today’s actions.
“But feel that I can't stand-by watching the emissions from my industry continue to grow and contribute so heavily to the climate carnage wreaking havoc around the world.””

“The privileged individuals and families who comprise the global elite will happily bankrupt their own countrymen, decimate their own community and evict their neighbors from houses in their desperate bid to increase their wealth.”

Read your post on "disruptors", loved it, and made me wonder why so many have a cult of personality spring up around them. Were there similar cults of personality for the mega wealthy in the past; like was Rockefeller worshiped the way so many worship Musk? Or is it a more modern trend fuelled by our constant connectivity and consumption of media? Thanks!
You raise an interesting question.
It was certainly true that the robber barons of the 19th century - Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Carnegie, Morgan, Gould, Frick, etc. - were larger-than-life figures in the media (especially the part of the media that covered high society). It is also true that with a lot of these figures, there was this popular myth of the self-made man that sought to turn them into quintessential rags-to-riches, up-by-your-bootstraps American sucess stories.
Tumblr media
But for the most part, the robber barons of the Gilded Age were hated for their monopolistic behavior and their use of violence to suppress the working class - and these magnates often had to go to great lengths to repair their reputations. Andre Carnegie's library-building campaign, for example, was very much a PR move meant to soften his image after the Homestead Strike. In fact, my great-grandfather Humphrey Attewell helped to organize opposition to the construction of a Carnegie library in Northampton, because he and other working-class people felt that the funds for the library were blood money distributed by a murderer. Likewise, it's not an accident that John D. Rockefeller founded the Rockefeller Foundation right around the same time that the Ludlow Massacre turned him into a monster in the eyes of the American public.
I would argue that we start to see more of a cult of personality around the mega-wealthy a bit later - say, 1900s-1930s - and the major turning point was the career of Thomas Edison. While Edison was every bit as ruthless and grasping as the robber barons before him - hence the war of the currents, his penchant for patent theft and/or stealing credit for inventions, the very existence of Hollywood - the fact that he was an inventor with so many world-changing patents to his name made Edison into a very different kind of media figure. Thomas Edison became a star of pulp fiction and dime novels, a sort of proto-superhero Science Hero - in addition to Edison's Conquest of Mars (an unauthorized sequel to the War of the Worlds in which Thomas Edison gets revenge for the Martian invasion of Earth by launching a counter-invasion of the red planet with his superior technology), there was a whole genre of Edisonades all about young inventor geniuses who use their inventions to save the day and/or explore the "savage frontier."
Tumblr media
I think you can draw a line from the cult of personality around Edison to the cult of personality that formed around Henry Ford in the 20s and 30s as not just a car manufacturer but a visionary who had created a new age of modernity, and from there to the legend of the Packard garage, and from there to contemporary Silicon Valley.

I really feel like we're in an economic depression. I know very few people who are making enough to live comfortably. And it's mostly because of wealth hoarding and exploitation of the working class. No one is having a good time right now except for the 1%, who are just rolling in dough while they call the working class "lazy" to try to make us do more for less. They say no one wants to work, but I haven't heard back from hardly any of the places I've applied to. This shit isn't right. I'm getting really fucking pissed off, and I think you should be too. Something needs to change and soon.
