Tbh biggest continuity oopsie of aos is that they blew up Vulcan. We have no clue how that would effect pon farr and every reason to assume every single vulcan who enters pon farr after the destruction would simply die because they cant return to old vulcan
Big oops

On today's wonderings about Vulcan biology:
Since Vulcans live about twice as long as humans, does that mean they take longer to become adults? As in are they children for longer or are they considered adults at around 18 as well? If not, then are they elderly for longer?
Basically, do they age at the same rate as humans and just live longer? Or do they age slower than us?

The question is not "why do Vulcans kiss with their fingers?"
The question is, why do humans NOT?
The human fingertip—EACH fingertip—has over three thousand nerve endings. It has more touch receptors per millimeter than any other part of the body, including lips, tongue, and genitals.
Obviously the type of sensation we get from our fingers isn't typically a sexual one. But this is also true of lips and tongues. We just think of our lips as romantic and sexual but we don't put finger touching into the same context. We probably could though.
The real reason Vulcans kiss with their hands? It's because they don't touch with their hands very often. Something you don't do with everyone becomes significant and intimate. Like (switching universes for a minute) when the Radchaai take off their gloves. You wear gloves 24/7 around everyone you know, pretty soon taking them off will feel like stripping. Same concept.
Context is everything. Sure, it's no big deal for Vulcans to type with their fingers, just like it's no big deal for you to put chapstick on or lick an ice cream cone. But when a person you've never touched before very carefully brushes your pinkie with their pinkie while your hands are under the table.....you gonna tell me that's not first base? It could be.

Welcome to the Zine O’Biology
A multi-fandom Star Trek Zine.
Do you have strong opinions on Vulcan fra’als, Cardassian tails, or how the heck Trill symbionts reproduce? We want to hear from you!
The Zine O’Biology is a fictional comparative xenobiology academic journal set in the Star Trek universe. If you’ve always wanted to wax eloquent for up to 3000 words about your theories on alien biology, welcome to your new home!
We want all your theories about all your favorite aliens! This is a friendly but competitive academic journal where the content of every paper is a little bit suspicious (is this paper based on rumor or fact? What is the methodology?) and some competing authors leave snarky comments on one another’s work. So just like a real academic journal, except ours features the Great Green Anthurium.
We welcome xenobiology articles on all Star Trek aliens from all series!
The final format will be a PDF that you can scroll at your leisure or print at home in order to have a physical copy of the Zine. (This way there is no money involved.)
--SEEKING SUBMISSIONS FOR--
Alien biology articles
Alien biology artwork

ALIEN BIOLOGY ARTICLES
How do Andorian genders work? Are Cardassians actually lizards? Why do Klingons have so many redundant organs? What’s the biological purpose of Bajoran nose ridges? What’s the best cement mix for emergency surgery on a Horta?
You’ve been pondering alien biology for years. This is your chance to infodump all your favorite theories to an eager audience of your fellow nerds!
Articles will be separated into two categories: reproductive biology or general biology. Yes, we also want all your theories on what every species is packing downstairs…and how they use it.
Journal articles should be fun and engaging, but also written in your interpretation of a pseudo-academic style, since this is a highly respected Federation xenobiology journal. If you want to keep things more lighthearted and less academic, check out the section on Letters to the Editor.
ALIEN BIOLOGY ARTWORK
If you have independent illustrations about alien biology we would love to see them! If you would like to provide illustrations for one of our journal articles, tell us what species you want to illustrate and we’ll do our best to match you up!
Art should be in a square, scaleable format, printable at high resolution at 4x4 inches.
JOURNAL ADVERTISEMENTS
Even in a post-need future, academic journals will need a little extra funding. Submit your ads for Ferengi Oomox Creme, Self Sealing Stem Bolts, Gently Used Federation Technology, and, of course, “reproductive aids.” The weirder the better! Have fun with it!
All art needs to be printable at high resolution
Ad Sizes:
1 column (vertical) 3.5 x 7
half page (horizontal) 8 x 5
banner (narrow horizontal) 8 x 2
in-text (square) 3.5 x 3.5 scaleable
in-text (half-square) 3.5 x 1.75
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Do you have a great idea, but it’s not enough to fill out a 3000 word article? Submit it as a “reaction” to a previous journal article. Feel free to lay into a mythical researcher who does NOT understand why their biological theory is wrong and yours is right!
Max length 800 words. Enjoy making these plenty frothy!
WE NEED SUB-EDITORS!
The creators of this Zine are all notorious Vulcan Fuckers. Since we want the Zine O’Biology to be open to all alien species, it is only logical that we seek your expertise.
We’re seeking fans from all over the Star Trek universe to spread the word that yes, it’s time for us to all come together in the spirit of explaining how our favorite aliens come together.
Sub-Editors will be in charge of helping us solicit articles and art for their specific race of aliens and editing those articles in order to fit into the Zine. If we don’t have a sub editor for a species, we’ll do our best, but the chapter on that species won’t be as good as it would be if folks with real fanon knowledge were involved.
WANT TO GET INVOLVED, BUT YOU’RE NOT A WRITER OR ARTIST?
WE NEED:
Graphic designers to help with Zine layout
Social media promoters
Alien art and article wranglers (ie: get your fannish friends involved!)
--HOW TO GET INVOLVED--
Fill out the Art or Writing Google Form letting us know your interests or reach out to the Editor in Chief at [email protected]
DEADLINES:
August 1, 2024: Last date for everyone seeking an art or writing partner to submit their request. We don’t guarantee you’ll be partnered up. It depends on how many people are interested and what aliens they want to draw/write.
August 18, 2024: Art/Writing partners notified. NOTE: it’s both fine and encouraged if you want to submit as a team from the start! This is for people who do not have a partner and would like us to find them one.
August 30, 2024: Final call for all journal authors, artists, and advertisers to let us know what species they’re working with, how many submissions they plan to send, and whether their submission will be general or reproductive biology.
October 20, 2024: All art, advertising, and journal submissions are due
We hope to have the Zine O’Biology ready for your enjoyment by New Year’s Eve 2024. We all have full time jobs and lives, so that date may change depending on the volume of submissions.
FAQ
What if my biological theories are totally different from another author’s?
Yes. Perfect. We love it.
We want to see everyone’s theories! Canon gave us scraps, but together we will make a meal! Expect to see many mutually contradictory articles. That’s part of the fun!
What about Smut?
Yes, we are accepting E rated submissions! The journal will be separated into two sections:
General Biology
Reproductive Biology
General Biology is everything but the genitals
Reproductive Biology should include actual descriptions of the mechanics and biology. Think of it as creating reference material for smut writers and artists.

Welcome to me totally overthinking the logistics behind a Star Trek episode!
We know there are literally billions of Vulcans on the homeworld alone. Purely from a scheduling perspective, they can’t all get married on the specific super isolated patch of Sacred Sands(™) from Amok Time.
Plus, Spock said that this is HIS FAMILY’S patch of Sacred Sand(™).  You know, Spock, son of Ambassador Sarek, great-grandson of T’Pau, direct descendant of Surak himself. He’s basically Vulcan Royalty. His Kalifee probably took place at the Vulcan equivalent of Westminster Abbey.
So where do working class Vulcans have their first Pon Farr bonding ritual?
I can’t help picturing every city and rural county on Vulcan having their own Fuck Or Die Event Arena. In between weddings they hold concerts, lirpa battles, and fiercely competitive elementary school science fairs.

Another speculation post on Vulcan biology and social interactions
You know that emotions are actually vital for animals(with nervous system)? It's a way your body let's you know that there's something wrong or good going on with you. Although the popular belief is that emotions are *illogical* I view them as a very logical thing, it's that sometimes it can be too complicated to see the reason right away. Even when you have for example ptsd and you *overreact* to a certain trigger it's not illogical - your body have been in a lot of stress and/or danger and it knows that you're weary of this so it makes sure you're dealing with the situation as soon as possible (even though your reaction to trigger might be tears or panic attack your body actually tries to save you it's just it's the only way it knows how to save you - that's why you might need therapy - to learn new ways of carring about yourself)
Another great function of emotions is to show other people what is going on with you. Like animals show their teeth to warn other animals - they don't have language and they can't explain that they're going to attack. And for people it's also true and it takes less energy to smile rather then to explain that you're actually happy etc.
And then there's vulcans. And a great difference between humans and vulcans - they have telepathy. And just imagine - you don't need language and you also don't need to flex your muscles in order to translate your inner state. And as far as biology goes the actions that take less energy get more advanced.
I think vulcans have emotions, as much as humans do, but they're experiencing them differently. For reference humans can't actually feel wetness we just don't have receptors for this. Frogs do have such receptors, we don't. But we still know when we're wet because of the temperature and pressure.
So vulcans have emotions but they don't show them much because they don't have a need to show them with a body language they can do it with telepathy. On top of that, thanks to their culture and meditation, they're hyper aware of what's going on in their bodies and they're in much lesser need for emotions as a way of letting you there's something wrong. So they do have emotions, I am certain of that, but they're experiencing them so differently from how the other species experience them that vulcans won't even call them "emotions"

i know that there’s been many blue eyed actors who have played vulcans, but i’d like to think that the blue eye mutation just doesn’t exist for them. there are no blue eyed vulcans. all brown, actually. maybe a little hazel as a treat.
when they first saw zefram cochrane they said fascinating with .2% more vigor than the standard intonation

The only instances wherein Vulcans having delicate sense of smell was reference was in Star Trek: Enterprise. This made me a smile, made me miss T'Pol.

thinking about body swap fics involving Spock. Thinking about the way they frequently have whoever is in Spock's body emoting in more human ways.
Then thinking about the fact that Vulcans have stronger emotions than humans which is why they have to cultivate such strong emotional control. Then thinking about the fact that emotions are largely biochemical reactions.
Anyways if anyone were to bodyswap with Spock (or any Vulcan) they would immediately go feral, completely incapable of handling emotions that are far more impactful then they are used to. And with 3× their normal amount of strength.

Nobody asked for this but it's time for an essay on Spock's body temperature.
Some people say Spock would have a hot body temperature because he is from a hot planet.
Others say he would have a cold body temperature because he is from a hot planet.
It seemed to me that we could test this thesis! Do animals from hot climates have a hotter or colder body temperature than animals from cold climates?
Humans have a roughly average temperature for mammals, 98.6 F (37 C).
Penguins have a core temperature of 100-102 F. Polar bears have a temperature of 98-99 just like we do. They can maintain this temp even in 40 below zero temps!
What about hot weather animals? The camel can vary from 93-104 F—a huge range, but on average around the same as ours. The elephant also has a large range, 95-99 F.
The coldest-blooded mammal is the echidna, at 89 F. The hottest is the hummingbird, at 107. Neither of these is from an extreme environment. It's more about the metabolism: the echidna's is slow and the hummingbird's is fast.
And yet, you see the range is not very great among mammals. This is because many enzymes work efficiently at these temperatures. Above about 104 F, some start breaking down. By 131 F, there's not much enzyme activity that can happen.
Okay, so: Vulcans. We know that they will not have an especially warm or cool body temperature because of the climate. Since they're warm blooded (an assumption, I admit! But I will defend it later) they will have an ideal core temperature their body will function best at and have features to maintain that despite the heat.
Note: Vulcans can also survive more extreme cold than humans; that's why Spock has to help Bones in a blizzard in All Our Yesterdays. This makes sense to me, because desert climates like Vulcan are prone to extremes. It might get very cold there at night with little moisture to trap the heat. This is one reason I think Vulcans are warm-blooded—a cold-blooded creature would have been useless in a blizzard. The other reason is that cold blooded creatures have a slower metabolism in general, and Spock could not possibly be described as slow moving or slow thinking.
Okay, so what is the Vulcan metabolism? Is it faster or slower than humans? My guess is faster, because of their fast heart rate, strength, and quick thinking. That said, we don't have solid proof either way. It might make sense for them to have a slower metabolism so that their body produces less heat and is less likely to get into the enzyme denaturing zone on a hot Vulcan day.
Which brings us to another question: how do they beat the heat? They seem perfectly comfortable in their climate, they're not using behavioral practices to stay cool as humans from hot climates do. They must have ways to efficiently radiate heat from their core. Those ears, for instance. Remember elephants? Their huge, flappy ears are a major cooling mechanism for them. They are able to push more blood through the small capillaries of their ears in hot weather and restrict it when the temperature drops at night. This is called vasodilation—controlling blood flow to either shed or retain heat. We do it too, though not as much. When you're hot, your ears will be hotter. Out in the cold, your fingers and toes will get much colder than your core.
Like camels, elephants can maintain a larger range of body temperatures than humans can. That's another coping technique they have. Other ways to shed heat include sweat and panting.
I never really imagined Vulcans as very sweaty. In a desert climate, methods of cooling that involve water loss wouldn't be ideal.
Here's my guess: they are extremely efficient at regulating core temperature by controlling blood flow. In hot temperatures, their skin and especially their ears would be hot, but their insides would be maybe 100 degrees. When it cools down, their skin would be very cool to the touch, but they would keep a core temperature in the 90s. They might also be able to speed up and slow down their metabolism somewhat to control their temperature.
So. On the Enterprise, which is kept at a comfortable temperature for humans...I think Spock would be a little chilly to cuddle. If you want a warm cuddle with Spock, go to his quarters, where he keeps it nice and toasty.
This has been my xenobiology deep dive for today.

I love when fanfic describe Vulcan bonds like it’s some sort of infectious disease “Captain im sorry to inform you we are soulmates, we tried masking and social distancing but it didn’t work” “you tested positive for being bonded to me, most unfortunate”. I mean that is totally probably not how it works at all but doesn’t mean I don’t love reading about it.
