I know Palpatine controlled the courts and all that, but I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if Mace Windu had been about 20% less done and ready to go through one more circus to take down the Sith Lord:

Anakin: He must stand trial!

Mace: He has control of the Senate and the courts. He's too dangerous to be left alive!

Palpatine: I'm too weak. Oh, don't kill me. Please!

Anakin: It's not the Jedi way. He must live!

Mace, having just woken up from the most refreshing nap of his life before Anakin barged in to tell him about the Sith Lord, looking at Anakin, who clearly hasn’t slept in three days and is running off caf and stims; looking back at Palpatine (clearly playing some sort of game), apparently confident Anakin will help him.

Mace: Ugh, fine. Cut his hands off, we’ll take him into Jedi custody.

Anakin: …His hands?

Mace: He killed three Council members in like two seconds! Did you not notice the bodies? We can’t afford him trying to escape at full power! It’s his hands or his head, Skywalker!

(Anakin had not, in fact, noticed the bodies.)

Palpatine: Please! I need my hands to save your wife!

Anakin: !!

Mace: ??

Mace: Your- never mind that! What did he promise you?

Anakin: Padme’s dying! I have to save her!

Mace: Amidala? Why isn’t she with the Healers, then??

Anakin, not listening: I’ve been having these terrible visions! She’s going to die in childbirth!

Mace “I don’t have time to unpack all this”: Anakin! Focus! Help me bring the Sith into custody; then we can get Amidala to the Healers, and whatever Dark influence he had over her will be broken!

Palpatine, who hasn’t actually done anything to Padme, just Anakin, but knows exactly how this looks: Shit.

Anakin, who is a good Jedi outside of Palpatine’s influence, wants nothing more than to end the war so he can sort his personal problems out, and whose only hesitation was over Padme: Palpatine = Sith = Dark --> Dark visions?? = OH

Anakin, happily cutting off Palpatine’s hands: Yes, Master! :D

Promptly runs off to go find Padme.

Palpatine: SHIT

Mace, staring after Anakin in exasperation as he’s left alone in a room with a Sith Lord: Well, I made a promise. Come along, Mister Sith, we’ve got some nice padded Force-proof cells for you. Please try to escape so I can kill you before we get there, it’ll make all our lives much easier.

Dooku leaves High Council, in what may be the shortest tenure anyone has achieved, at least until 19BBY and Anakin Skywalker lasts a whole thirty-three or so hours.

Jocasta takes his seat as a temporary measure, given implications that she 'traded the High Council seat for the Archives' back when she was ~ 42.

High Council agrees (except Yoda) to offer Qui-Gon the chair. Jocasta wants to go back to her Archives, she cannot have her attention split. Yesterday, she caught a title that had a semi-colon instead of a colon on its database entry. This cannot be tolerated!

Qui-Gon declines.

High Council offers Sifo-Dyas the chair. He probably does a 'who, me?' little bit of mime before letting out a little cackle in the library break room when telling Jocasta.

Sifo-Dyas accepts, joins High Council, rubs his little hands together in glee.

The war would be over very quickly in a republic commando/Coruscant guard crossover because the second he heard about the corries being mistreated by Palpatine, Ordo would have just straight up killed the chancellor with Jusik as his getaway driver. The next thing a very confused Fox knows is that he and his men have all been adopted by a very angry mando called Skirata. He doesn't know what happened but his evil boss is dead and he can now get more than 3 hours sleep a night so he's cool with it.

He spread his hands as though offering a hug. “Share with me the truth. Your absolute truth. Let yourself out, Anakin.”

“I--” Anakin shook his head. How many times had he dreamed of not having to pretend to be the perfect Jedi? But what else could he be? “I wouldn’t even know how to begin.”

“It’s quite simple, in the end: tell me what you want.”

Anakin squinted up at him. “I don’t understand.”

“Of course you don’t.” The last of the sunset haloed his ice-white hair and threw his face into shadow. “You’ve been trained to never think about that. The Jedi never ask what you want. They simply tell you what you’re supposed to want. They never give you a choice at all. That’s why they take their students--their victims--at an age so young that choice is meaningless. By the time a Padawan is old enough to choose, he has been so indoctrinated--so brainwashed--that he is incapable of even considering the question. But you’re different, Anakin. You had a real life, outside the Jedi Temple. You can break through the fog of lies the Jedi have pumped into your brain. I ask you again: what do you want?”

“I still don’t understand.”

“I am offering you . . . anything,” Palpatine said. “Ask, and it is yours. A glass of water? Yours. A bag full of Corusca gems? Yours. Look out the window behind me, Anakin. Pick something, and it’s yours.” [. . .]

“You can’t just--”

“Yes, I can. It’s yours. [. . .]”

Anakin gazed blankly out into the gathering darkness. Star began to shimmer through the haze of twilight. A constellation he recognized hung above the spires of the Jedi Temple.

“All right,” Anakin said softly. “Corellia. I’ll take Corellia.” “The planet, or the whole system?”

Anakin stared.

“Anakin?”

“I just--” He shook his head blankly. “I can’t figure out if you’re kidding, or completely insane.”

“I am neither, Anakin. I am trying to impress upon you a fundamental truth of our relationship. A fundamental truth of yourself.

The concept left his dizzy, What if, what if I went along with Padmé and her friends? what if I want the war to end?

Tomorrow would be too soon?

How can you do that?

Right now, we are discussing what, How is a different issue; we will come to that presently.

Anakin sank into his chair, if only his head would stop spinning, why did Palpatine had to start all of this now? This would be easier to understand if the nightmare of Padme didn´t keep screaming in his head?

And in exchange? he asked, what do I have to do?

You have dreamed of leaving the Jedi Order, having a family of your own, one that´s based on love, not on enforced rules of self denial

Without understanding how he had moved, without even intending to move, without any transition of realization or dawning understanding, Anakin found himself on his feet. A blue bar of sizzling energy terminated a centimeter from Palpatine’s chin, its glow casting red-edged shadows up his face and across the ceiling.

Only gradually did Anakin come to understand that this was his lightsaber, and that it was in his hand.

“You,” he said. Suddenly he was neither dizzy nor tired.

Suddenly everything made sense.

“It’s you. It’s been you all along!”

In the clean blue light of his blade he stared into the face of a man whose features were as familiar to him as his own, but now seemed as alien as an extragalactic comet--because now he finally understood that those familiar features were only a mask.

He had never seen this man’s true face.

“I should kill you,” he said. “I will kill you!”

Palpatine gave him that wise, kindly-uncle smile Anakin had been seeing since the age of nine. “For what?”

“You’re a Sith Lord!”

“I am,” he said simply. “I am also your friend.”

The blue bar of energy wavered, just a bit. [. . .]

“When I die,” Palpatine said with the air of a main reminding a child of something he ought to already know, “my knowledge dies with me.”

The sizzling blade trembled.

“Unless, that is, I have the opportunity to teach it . . . to my apprentice.”

His vision swam.

“I . . .” A whisper of naked pain, and despair. “I don’t know what to do . . .”

Palpatine gazed upon him, loving and gentle as he had ever been, though only a whisker shy of a lightsaber’s terminal curve.

And what if this face was not a mask? What if the true face of the Sith was exactly what he saw before him: a man who had cared for him, had helped him, had been his loyal friend when he’d thought he had no other?

What then?

“Anakin,” Palpatine said kindly, “let’s talk.”

Everyone wonders why Anakin didn’t think it was weird that Palpatine knew so much about the Sith, but it’s quite possible he just never realized it was a subject that almost all of the galaxy didn’t know about. Ever since they met, Palps was always telling him little bits of knowledge about the Sith & he just assumed that Sith stories were somewhat common knowledge that most people weren’t interested in or just weren’t comfortable talking about.

let's face it, Obi-Wan is only a stickler for the rules in comparison to Anakin. this guy thought lightsaber nunchucks were cool as a teenager and jumping out of politicians windows was cool as an adult. he regularly sasses the chancellor of the republic. he saw Anakin and Padmé being super obvious and decided it was none of his business. he sits pussy facing the world in important meetings. hes's a lonely single in your area. he won one (1) fight against a sith lord and decided they were his speciality despite getting his ass handed to him by Dooku multiple times. he's annoying on purpose as a battle strategy. every man he meets desires him carnally and he doesn't notice. he puts one foot on Han Solos ship and is like "damn bitch you live like this" despite having spent 20 years in a desert hole. he gets himself killed to one-up Vader one last time. he's winning the idgaf war

Jedi culture & community fics, my beloved! They're a bit of a rare breed for what you're specifically looking for, specifically focusing on positive Jedi worldbuilding, so if anyone has genfic recs outside of the ones I know, please feel free to add them! But these should help scratch that itch for you, each of them has at least some focus on Jedi philosophy or how Jedi interact with each other or the lessons they teach! It's been awhile since I've read some of them, so there might be some that aren't quite as in-line with how I see the Jedi these days, but they're all ones I felt portrayed them pretty positively and they're all genfic (except one that I made an exception for) and all really lovely fics I remember enjoying for the Jedi worldbuilding aspects! Mace Windu said fuck the rules fuck the law fuck tradition the Chancellor is a Sith Lord and has made himself an emperor and I’m not going to sit by and let it happen.

Mace Windu said if I do nothing I’d be betraying the democracy I thought I was fighting for this whole time, which means more than the crimes I’ll be charged with when this is over.

And yet people try to praise Anakin or Dooku for “leaving a corrupt system”. As if that was why Anakin left. As if Dooku did anything but make it worse. People praise the Mandalorians for only following their own rules. As if we’ve ever seen the Mandalorians truly stand for anything.

As if we don’t already have the most metal anti-authoritarian, badass character for people to praise.

And yet these parts of the fandom hate him. I wonder why 🤔

Type A:

What do you mean Dooku turned to the dark side? Maul, a sith lord? No, the Jedi found him before Sidious did. Wait, who's Sidious? Palpatine, a sith? Everybody lives happily ever after

Type B:

Revenge of the Sith never happened.

Palpatine choked on a bagel.

Palpatine died in mysterious speeder accident, some say Quinlan Vos was involved.

Fives and Rex beat up Palpatine.

Palpatine was found dead, Fox has disappeared.

Commander Cody finds out and personally confronts the Chancellor, "the senate will decide your fate" Anakin comes along and helps Cody. (Obi wan is dueling Grievous)

Padme single handedly defeats Palpatine in mortal combat, she becomes chancellor.
