THE DEVONSVILLE TERROR (1983)
There are countless sub-genres when it comes to horror films, but none are quite as reliable as those that fall within the Donald Pleasence Plays a Weird Doctor category. By my unreliable count, I've already watched three movies that aren't HALLOWEEN in which Pleasence plays a Loomis-adjacent wackadoo—including PHENOMENA and BURIED ALIVE—and the latest to be blasted into my brain at an ungodly hour was 1983's THE DEVONSVILLE TERROR.
As should come as no surprise, this effort from director Uli Lommel (THE BOOGEYMAN) was given the luxurious Blu-ray treatment thanks to Vinegar Syndrome, and it fits in well with their very specific brand. We start our tale 300 years ago in the humble town of Devonsville, where a trio of women are being mercilessly tortured and killed under suspicion of being some bitchin' witches. The methods of torture are worth noting, because when Mary is placed upon the breaking wheel and set ablaze, we get to watch this wooden wheel go tumbling down a hill with a rubber doll attached to it in all its burning glory. Flash forward to the present and the town is just as humble, only it's about to welcome three women who bring with them echoes of the past and the potential for glorious retribution upon the descendants of those hateful, ignorant townsfolk.
Or hell, maybe they really were witches the whole time. Donald Pleasence's Dr. Warley is directly related to one of the main instigators of the inquisition, and as such he is cursed to constantly pull writhing worms from his flesh, one little grub at a time. He's got worms, folks! Before we get a chance to see Donald Pleasance yank more bugs out of his wrist, Jenny Scanlon (Suzanna Love) moves into town along with two other women who are way too liberated for the locals. Jenny is a teacher who dares to casually insinuate that god might be a woman while teaching a bunch of little kids about mushrooms. Chris is an environmental scientist investigating potential contaminants and Monica is a DJ who everyone seems to listen to but no one seems to like, mostly because she gives the women who call in advice on getting out of their toxic relationships.
No one digs these progressive ideas, especially residents like Walter Gibbs (Paul Willson), the store owner who got so tired of having to wait on his ill wife that he smothered her with a pillow. This combined with our newcomers serves as the catalyst for a real rural reckoning, with a resurgence of potential witchery giving Dr. Warley the long-awaited opportunity to right some of the wrongs of the past.
THE DEVONSVILLE TERROR has major TV movie vibes, and that's certainly not a dig. It goes well beyond what you could get away with on TV at the time, though, and culminates in some grisly final moments that serve as a nice cherry on top of the brisk 82 minute runtime. On the Loomis scale it doesn't quite hit the "Hey Lonnie, get yo ass away from there" mark, but it's safe to call it a literal 5am face-melter.

In Ulli Lommel’s Devonsville Terror (1983) three career women arrive in a small New England town that has a witch-killing history and, as a result, is cursed.
Devonsville Terror uses the accused woman construction in a feminist-inspired horror film. Due to the fact it was released early in the period, it still retains many common narrative elements and plot structures found within the witch films of the 1970s. (Greene 2018.)
Like the 🇫🇮film Noita palaa elämään & The Woman who came back, The Undead, Daughters of Satan (see my previous posts); this too is a movie where there is a “resurrection of the witch” -theme, sins of our ancestors, curse and the revenge.
Like a envious child who would rather destroy something that isn’t theirs, a harsh superego can make it feel like there is an internal someone or something that is intent on destruction.
Actually this is also very christian-theme, if you think Eve, snake and the 🍎 The theme of inherited sickness is psychologically interesting in this movie - Marks of shame in men🐛
There are elements of ”Trash” in the film, and the low budget is obvious. But it will give you surprising insights.
😅Personal favorites: Jenny in the doctors office explaining only in her bra, how she have had trouble sleeping. Walter playing Adagio to Jenny, who feels his murderous nature.
Once again, the American witch movie with The Salem story in the background. But the brutality and sadism of this Film made me think that maybe the US is dealing with its own traumas through this. And I don't mean The Salem story now, but more recent times, like the atrocities associated with slavery and like Billie Holiday puts it: ”Southern trees bear a strange fruit, blood on the leaves and blood at the root.” Return of the repressed - folk horror.
Philosophically the theme of responsibility of actions is always relevant. However sexual sadism is also a way to sell movies.
“filmic New England can be understood in audiovisual media as a type of imagined community that can stand as an analogue for the idea of a nation. (Sayers 2018.)”
