Something common in both mapsets and gameplay mods is replacing the SS guards and Keen.
It's how you get custom enemies in certain maps or mods with extra/secret enemies.
Of course, if you mix a mod and map that do both, they tend to clash.
But regardless, it's a fun thing so i thought of making a list of some examples.
And specifically about the Wolfenstein enemy and hanging Keen, so Romero's head or the "dead Lost Soul" thing aren't in it.
(Note: feel free to mention some because this list could have more examples)
In case this is long:
The Rebirth: SS guards are replaced with a snowman that can shoot you while Keen is replaced with an hanging Mario in a secret Mario themed area.
Ancient Aliens: SS guards are replaced by armored alien troopers (?) that shoot plasma and turn almost invisible to move around and Keen is replaced by floating skull things that shoot homing rockets (They have the same graphics as the spawn cube in FreeDoom).
Scythe 2: SS guards turns into that one red Doomguy with a Plasma Rifle and Keen becomes the Afrit, flying upper halves of red Barons that throw multiple fire balls.
TNT Revilution: I know the SS become a plasma turret but not sure about the Keens, are they the ones that shoot rockets?
Doom Zero: SS become the "alpha" Lost Soul (That originally had the hitscan attack but ever since the Unity add-on, it now shoots a Caco projectile) and Keen becomes a Dopefish.
Eviternity: Has more custom enemies but the SS replacement is the Former Captain (Who despite being a dual wielding chaingunner, actually shoots projectiles) and Keen becomes the Astral Cacodemon who shoots multiple fireballs.
Doom 2 The Way id Did: Because the secret levels are themed after Commander Keen, both Keen and the SS are replaced with characters from that series (SS becomes the Dopefish and Keen becomes a Yorp).
Epic 2: SS become some invisibility/camouflage alien-like guys that predate the ones we see in Ancient Aliens. Keen has his sound changes because of how he's used in some level.
Jenesis: SS becomes a zombie UAC marine and Keen becomes a fleshy monstrosity with twisted faces that shoots rockets and is the final boss.
Moonblood: SS becomes the Mother Demon from D64, who shoots Manc fireballs, Rev missiles and even a generic rocket.
50 Monsters: SS becomes a Chaingunner that drops an ammo clip, which is something i've seen other mapsets do. Keen becomes the Afrit.
Obituary: Keen becomes a dead player while SS becomes the "high tech guy" who's semi-invisible and has 2 guns.
Hacx: The Roaming Mine replaces the SS it seems.
FreeDoom: Why didn't i add this? SS become French sailors i think? They don't even have a dedicated level, really. And Keen becomes an alien inside a jar you can break, which is treated as a level prop.
4 Seasons of Doom: SS become a zombie with a BFG-kinda that shotos Manc flames (They also explode when they die) and Keen becomes an Imp hiding in a trash can.
Space Hunter: The SS are changed visually/mechanically to reference the Wizzrobes from Zelda (Called the Nazrobes here) and killing them grants access to a magical rod with new attacks. Keen is replaced with Mario stuck on a vine and you can hurt him to change to small Mario before dying in typical Mario fashion.
GMOTA: The SS are skeleton copies of the playable characters who are weak and laughable, sometimes a Revenant appears.
Hard Doom: It brings back other Wolf 3D enemies like the officer with the pistol and the silent mutant. Keen is replaced with a hanging torso-like creature that shoots projectiles so it's a basic threat.
Complex Doom: It gets crazy with the SS because it brings the dog enemies, mutants, some other soldiers and Mecha-Hitler. Keen is replaced with DarkSydePhil.
Demonsteele: SS are some armed Yakuza guys i guess, because they might be based off those Shadow Warrior guys. and Keen becomes an anime girl bodypillow.
MetaDoom: The SS represent soldiers from some ports of Wolf 3D, one of the Mac stealth games and RPG as if Wolfenstein was "Metafied" too. Keen resembles characters from other id titles like Dangerous Dave or Hovertank 3-D.
Doom Delta: The SS are replaced with the more basic Wolf 3D guard/soldier enemy.
Legion of Bones: The SS are replaced with those red skeletons with swords that used to be on FreeDoom and they shoot those firey skulls from Heretic i think.

Elden Ring just beat me...and it's a bummer because I REALLY wanted to like this game. It has all the ingredients to make up a killer game. An open world with crazy art direction. Plenty of challenging options to keep you playing. But what went wrong? Why do I hate this game so much? I'm getting angry just trying to think about it, so let's try to make this quick...
In a nutshell: The setting seems to involve a fantasy setting where you are a fallen soldier. Getting involved in a brief skirmish with a giant spider demon. Then waking up in some sort of medeval hellish landscape with giant gold trees? There seems to be a detailed backstory written by George RR Martin (Game of Thrones). Although I wouldn't know because I'm too busy getting gangraped by skeleton warriors every step of the way to take notice. It's a "souls" game. So these games are annoying by design. But the broken game mechanics and tedious grinding make this game unplayable. Let me break it down like this...
The Good: The graphics are visually stunning, let's be honest. The environments and character designs are insane! Every enemy you encounter is menacing and emit pure nightmare fuel. Which is exciting to say the least. Elden Ring offers one of the best character creators in modern gaming. You can get really detailed adjusting the most minor facial features. Multiple character disciplines that greatly affect your gameplay experience. Diverse skin and body types. You can be really creative, which I adore! And then you put on some in-game armor that covers up the details you spent hours building. Cool! But let's appreciate the good elements because there's a whole lot of bad. Where do I begin...
The Bad: My first attempt playing this, I noticed these glowing rocks scattered around the floor. Apparently they were messages from other players across the Playstation network. Messages like "hidden treasure behind boulder" was pretty neat and helpful. But then you see more and more of these glowing messages. With a lot of not-so-useful messages like "is this dog?" and "finger in ur but". But what crossed the line was "boss up ahead" and you know what? There was a fucking boss ahead! What kind of troll shit allows spoilers mid-game? Can you imagine playing Resident Evil. Right before opening the door of that iconic dog chase scene, you read a community message saying "bow wow ahead lol" Like, way to ruin the immersion asshole! At that moment, I hated the game and pretty much gave up. But after discovering you can disable online messages, I tried it again. Which made a huge difference. I was starting to enjoy the game at first. But once you leave that cave, it was a pure shitshow from there. But let's start with the name "Elden Ring". This would imply upon a grandiose adventure involving a magical ring of some sort. But I would have appreciated it more if they were honest and called the game "YOU DIED" Because that's pretty much what you experience throughout the entire game. Every enemy you encounter was a pain in the ass with little relief in between. Please don't misunderstand, I'm not complaining about the challenge level. I appreciate a good challenging game. I hate to compare, but you have hard ass games like Cuphead, Doom Eternal and Battle Toads that are fantastic, despite their difficulty. There's a balance to their difficulty. Plus their controls are tight and responsive. But when you have to try and maneuver through shitty mechanics, you're not playing a fair game. I recall one instance where I was running around a stone wall to avoid an enemy. But I can't explain why the enemy's spear could clip through this stone wall for a one-shot kill? And what good is perfecting the timing of a defensive parry if a giant boss can just one-hit stomp you like a cockroach? And you get paid in turds so the risk/reward balance is off. I'd rather work a sweatshop, hand-sewing Lulu Lemon leggings than to grind hours for one stamina point. At least you'll get paid at the sweatshop. But if you play Elden Ring long enough, and memorize the patterns and "git gud" you'll eventually beat one of the bosses and get a weapon you can't use, because your charisma stats or whatever is too low. LOL! This game blows.
Overall: Video Games are supposed to be fun. But Elden Ring was a burden to get through. It felt like work after a while. Like an abusive unpaid intership in hell. You can hire a dominatrix if you enjoy the abuse. It won't take up as much of your time and it's better support for your local economy. LOL! Fuck Elden Ring.
(Edited: Just remembered more things I hated about this game, but adjusted the score to something more reasonable. This game is obviously not shit and had me hooked for a while. It just wasn't fun for me. Plus it's not cool to shit on a particular fanbase. Play whatever you want. Don't let my opinion take a shit on your cereal. This is just a place to vent since it would be super weird to scream about Elden Ring out in the real world, with real life problems. But the game still sucks in my point of view so whatever. LOL!)

I haven't played the game but I've read spoilers for tlou2. Will the next season of tlou HBO even be worth it? I know Joel dies but are there any other characters that become lovable or is this Abby person at least a little likable? Asking you because I agree with all your takes on the show. Ty!
abby is a tumblr darling even tho she is a fascist and her section of the game is 12 hours of fetching things in a way that’s completely pointless to the plot, she barely shows remorse ever for her actions, she thinks ellie should b grateful to her she let her live after destroying her life, she’s the top soldier for her militia and is sad when she doesn’t have time to torture more ppl after she’s done with joel, she sleeps with her pregnant friends bf, doesn’t blink after slaughtering so many of the people in her militia she was loyal to the day before bcus of a kid who is meant to provide some sort of parallel to ellie/joel for her but is actually just rushed and can’t hit the same emotional beats whatsoever cus it’s been like… a day lmao… the narrative falls foul of telling us instead of showing us having abby say ‘you’re my people now’ which is hard 2 believe when a day previous she was making plans 2 destroy their home and loved 2 kill them. but she has muscles so a lot of ppl love her lol even tho she’s extremely bland, her gameplay is boring in the context of the plot and adds nothing to it (might have been more fun as its own game rather than coming after we’ve already played 12 hours and built up to a massive climax before suddenly being dropped back down to find ppl we know are dead and collect things… it’s a serious structural failure), and she’s barely remorseful and doesn’t really earn the redemption arc she’s given, especially not when the narrative tells us joel was too doomed to be redeemed when he’s been minding his business making guitars and wood whittling for five years in jackson and she at the end of 3 days with her when she’s meant to have evolved and realised violence is bad and her revenge didn’t achieve anything (except it does for her lol just not villain ellie!) and is meant 2 teach us all these lessons still just straight up murders ppl with glee, bonus points if they’re pregnant, beats the shit out of ellie without a slither of sympathy that she had ellie held down and heard her screaming and screaming for abby to stop hurting joel but carried on anyway even tho just finding her dad’s body is traumatising for her. ‘we let you live and you wasted it’ god i wanted to fucking shoot her myself cus she destroyed ellie’s life, took the person she loves the most brutally away in front of her, and it wasn’t a waste of abby’s life when she travelled 14 believable days across a dangerous post apocalyptic country for her revenge, and we are supposed to find empathy for her whilst she can’t find any of it for ellie lmao. the narrative props her up any chance it can whilst demonising joel and ellie, the characters we already love, trying to force you to like her in the most heavy handed and ham fisted way possible. oh she plays with dogs whilst ellie kills them!! good she’s still a torture loving fascist. but apparently she can be redeemed in 3 utterly unremorseful days and joel can go through the journey he does but is completely Hopeless and ellie is now the terrible villain of the tale. there’s a whole section that parallels the diner fight with david, this time positing ellie as the david villain to abby which is gross enough cus he was her tormenter and assaulter when she was 14, but also abby can kill who she likes and act like she likes and do torturing and murdering and the narrative never gives her this treatment or condemns her actions at all. anyway that’s a long way to say no she’s not likeable. yeah yeah the muscles, but again, she’s a fucking fascist.
honestly the other characters are fine, but they suffer in a plot in which the plot drives the characters rather than the characters driving the plot. they aren’t there for any other purpose than to move the plot and they can be a little bland for it. yeah dina is fine but she’s lumbered with this pregnancy plot so there can be some weird parallel to mel and largely doesn’t do much once you get to seattle and thus is very underdeveloped. jessie is also fine but underdeveloped too for the same reasons and he falls victim to neil ‘watch be me so diverse but poc are gonna die more than anyone else’ druckmann. all of them, new characters and old ones, continually make decisions that make you scratch your head and want to throw the controller away, again bcus plot > characters. it’s a poor way to tell a story. the characters should always drive the plot, never the other way around. it gets to the point when none of it justifies itself at all. but neil was so determined to tell his grimdark violent murderous hatred is as universal as love story that he was going to make it all fit no matter what and his characters and their motivations and characterisations fall to the wayside for it. it’s hard to find the ellie we fell in love with in part 1, let alone muster up enough energy to care about the side characters.
(as an aside neil is wrong about hatred being that universal and he thinks he’s right bcus he is a west bank settler and that alone should make you wary about season 2… the conflict in seattle is a mirror of the palestinian/israeli one and the narrative pushes on you this idea neil has that there are no wrong sides… but there is (half get to go home after a fight to a wealth of resources and land which they are trying to get more of and the other half has much less and can’t travel around the city unless they use secret bridges… idk if that sounds familiar to you) and you should all question why neil is pushing that. makes it even more hideous that he spent 25 hours propping up his wlf top soldier fascist and so many ppl lapped it up…)
maybe craig can fix some of these issues but im not holding out for it lol. some of the ways he’s talked about joel and ellie and the changes he made to the show are incredibly iffy. some of the ideas he has show he shouldn’t be allowed to talk about girls and their trauma ever again and he also thinks love can be as bad as it can be good which is such an ugly and stupid idea, especially when the whole point of part 1 is that love is what we have to hold onto when everything else is terrible. and no one come at me abt them being neil’s characters and his story cus BRUCE was there he co-created it and was the lead for the game lol.
anyway this got long im sorry no i don’t think it will be worth it.

cuno for character asks!
YESSS
Send me a character and I will tell you my:
First impression: kind of hard to explain bc I did know a bit about the game going into it, having seen lots of fanart and watched some gameplay clips. I think I didn’t initially realize Cuno was a twelve year old LOL I wanna say the first thing I ever saw of him was a redraw of that mp100 meme where he asks Kim “why does Cuno’s pig call you babygirl” and I think I thought he was a fellow cop…? I saw his portrait a few times too and thought he was some kind of loose cannon character. 😭 by the time I actually played the game I actually mostly knew abt what Cuno’s home life was like so I never really had that moment of going from “what’s the deal w these annoying kids” to “oh I care them,” he and C were actually a big reason I was interested in playing the game to begin with bc what I knew about them made me like 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭
Impression now: my horrible son who has every disease and calls me slurs. One of the best characters in the game, genuinely. Every single line of dialogue from him is either gut bustingly funny or devastating. He and C are the center of the whole story and the idea of a revolution to me bc they are the kids who will inherit the world that Harry and all the other political characters build. Girl child revolution and boy child freedom…
Favorite moment: it’s impossible to pick but one of the moments that stood out most to me was when I made Harry make some self deprecating joke comparing himself to the severed pig’s head in Cuno’s shack bc I thought Cuno would join in on bullying the cop, but instead got a serious shock when Cuno told me frankly that that was super dark and Cuno isn’t about that self-deprecation shit. I love that Cuno and Kim are both voices of reason for Harry, just coming from opposite personalities/POVs, and so Cuno has a lot of moments of saying things that just catch you totally off guard with how insightful he really is. In some ways I have even more respect for him and his opinion of me than I do Kim LOL
Idea for a story: I had this idea for a fic of post-game Cuno living with Harry in Jamrock and befriending a sickly stray dog, something about the way that Harry’s always compared to dogs and how Cuno is so similar to Harry when he was a kid and the 15th indotribe thought mentioning how they used to run from wild dogs in the valley… and about Cuno wondering whether loving someone who’s doomed matters in the end 😔
Unpopular opinion: idk if this is actually an unpopular opinion (I think probably not) but I think content of Harry and Kim adopting him together is so fucking funny bc Kim hates his little ass so much. Which is not to say that I dislike it, on the contrary, I think Kim is in dire need of more Cuno in his life
Favorite relationship: Cuno and Cunoesse… 😢 they are SO important to me
Favorite headcanon: Cuno’s graffito around Martinaise plus his artistic sensibilities™️ made me think it would be cute if he admired Cindy and often hoped she would notice his work and say smth about it. She seems to be everything Cuno wants to be tbh, a skull and an artist…

Games Like Sinister | Gameplay
youtube
The only reason I picked Doom 2 over Ultimate Doom is that I prefer it; better level design, more enemies, generally more fun. The link here is obvious; you move through levels trying to reach the end, fighting off demons as you do so. The game is 2.5D, which may seem confusing, and it is. Essentially, there's no up - floors can't be placed on top of each other, but it gives the illusion of height. The basic idea of exploring an abstract underworld filled with two-dimensional monsters is what Sinister is entirely based on, and I'll probably add limited combat, but not on the gratuitous level of Doom.
youtube
Pathways Into Darkness is a classic 90s dungeon crawler akin to Ultima Underworld, but slightly more obscure as it was released for the Mac and the Mac only. The story is bizarre; a gigantic god-like entity is asleep under the earth, and its dreams are causing a massive temple to manifest in the jungle. You're part of a spec ops team sent into the temple, to drop a nuke in its lowest chamber and pacify the being before it wakes up - as this would cause the end of days. It connects to the Marathon series as well, but that's not important right now. Having a game focused on exploration and combat, but also being set within a dead god's dream is very in line with my idea for Sinister. The game is also quite surreal with its enemies; from lumbering blob-men with mouths in their chests to goofy walrus-like floating creatures to reanimated skeletons, who throw bones at you.
youtube
Penumbra was essentially a tech demo for Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It follows Philip, a physicist who enters a desolate bunker in Greenland to find his father. Inside, you must solve puzzles using the proprietary physics engine, and occasionally avoid enemies; namely, rabid dogs. There is combat in Penumbra, but it is discouraged, and there are many ways of getting around enemies. You could sneak by them, you could run, you could bait them with meat or distract them with a flare. You could throw explosives (a quick but costly kill) or use physics objects to slow their pursuit. You could even lure them into an enclosed area and trap them, or use environmental obstacles to kill them without your input. It's an interesting angle of immersion that I haven't seen much; so many immersive sims will give you all sorts of weapons and gizmos and character upgrades for dealing with enemies in unique ways, but these usually boil down to a fancy way of killing them that isn't just shooting them in the face. This idea of discouraged but viable combat is what I want to replicate.
youtube
Prey 2006 is pretty obscure (mostly due to Prey 2017 making it impossible to search for, and it's removed from Steam) but quite interesting. You play as a Native American guy named Tommy, who gets abducted by aliens, and has to fight through their massive bio-organic ship to save his girlfriend Jen. The game uses seamless portals, one year before Portal, as well as loads of interesting tricks like non-Euclidian level geometry and alterable gravity (such as walking on walls and ceilings). It's really cool. The relevant thing for my game is that Tommy canonically dies within the first hour. After this, he's taken to a spirit world by his grandfather, where he gains spirit-walking powers and a ghost of his childhood pet, a hawk named Talon. When you die again in-game, you're taken back to the spirit world, to battle the "dishonored dead" and regain your health and spirit power. I really like games that deal with death in a canon sense - instead of restarting at a checkpoint, your character has legitimately died and returned to life. I want to explain respawning in Sinister in a similar way; you're in the afterlife, so technically, you're already dead.
youtube
Pathologic is a game I can't say enough good things about. It's a mega-obscure Russian game, about (in simple terms) a strange town, a string of murders, and a plague. You have twelve days to explore the town, uncover its mysteries, save your Bound (a group of people who are connected by fate) and save yourself. You'll have to make tough decisions, scavenge for supplies, learn the town's esoteric customs, and all while discovering the secrets of the Sand Plague. When I was first deciding what I wanted the project to be about, Pathologic was my main inspiration for the key themes: "Exploration in an unfamiliar world". The gameplay is primarily walking about, but you will occasionally get into combat. Stakes are very high in the game, and so you are encouraged to run and hide in buildings just as much as you are encouraged to fight. This more visceral and realistic approach to combat rather than just "shoot the bad men" is another thing I want to replicate in Sinister.

Thoughts on the last of us part 2?
Omg… you have no idea what you’re walking into anon…
Tumblr media
It is far and wide the most impactful game I’ve ever played.
There is a lot of criteria in which I could judge it and you asked and I have the day off so…
Firstly, the gameplay!
In my opinion, the gameplay in this is some of the smoothest, most fun of any game. Just like the first game, the transition from cutscene to gameplay is so fucking seamless I was sometimes taking a minute to realize I was in control again. The vast map and wide variety of controls you have over the character to me is incredible! Playing as Ellie is my favorite, she moves so fluidly and the jumping, climbing, ducking, crawling all of it feels so natural and immerses you so much. The highest difficulty I’ve beaten it on is hard so I can’t speak to the grounded or survivor challenge, but for me hard was perfect balance of challenge while still being fun and not too frustrating. The fight near the end with Ellie as the boss was the hardest one for me. And the rat king was a good chase scene/fight too.
Secondly, the visuals.
Naughty Dog never disappoints me with how fucking stunning their games look. The map of Seattle is seriously an amazing feat. Even during gameplay I’m struck by the beauty of the surrounding world, just like tlou1(esp after the remaster). I play on PS5, and so the graphics are just fucking phenomenal imo. My normal gaming experience is decent quality visuals in a cutscene and then clear jumps to gameplay more focused on function. TLOU2 (and 1) doesn’t make you choose. I seriously want to shake the creatives at Naughty Dog and just thank them for all the late nights and missed family dinners they must’ve had to create such intricate and well made visuals.
Some examples of shots I just think are neat:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thirdly, the story/character arc.
I’ll admit it. The first time I played through this game I was miserable. Joel’s death was a nightmare come true, for Ellie and me. The scene was so well crafted, the dread building up to it, everything. Joel finally settling in and opening himself up to kindness and even heroism (in saving Abby) was his fucking demise. I don’t know what that says but… well, that’s what happened.
I was able to shelve my grief and enjoy the Seattle bits with Ellie and Dina because like her, I wanted those fuckers dead. The drama between Ellie, Dina and Jesse somewhat mirroring Mel Owen and Abby was interesting, but I felt our Jackson trio was much kinder to each other and healthier and would have worked it out a lot better. Jesse dying was so unfair.
The flashback scenes with Joel broke me. The entire museum arc… god. I’ve never played a video game that devotes an entire chapter to gameplay of something mundane and fun, no threats, no fights, the only interaction is climbing a big t-Rex or spinning a planet diagram. The dialogue is amazing, shows how comfortable they are with one another and that they’re really operating like a father and daughter. Things weren’t all doom and gloom. Joel getting her the tape, encouraging her to wear the helmet and close her eyes and Ellie being fully immersed into this fantasy (similar to what Riley does for her in the DLC with the arcade game!) I just love that the people who love Ellie foster and groom her creativity and imagination.
Ellie was trying so hard to ignore the lie between them, to pretend things were okay, and sometimes she could. Sometimes she forgot that this horrible thing existed underneath the surface.
But of course, it festers and rots when it’s untouched. The finding strings portion was amazing. Joel was OP as hell and I like that the game really shows how nothing will stop him from keeping his girl safe. He fucking kills a bloater with a machete and doesn’t get hit once. Unheard of?! The ending sequence where she confronts him was hard to watch. You feel what both of them are feeling and are somehow rooting for both of them to not have to address this pain.
Ellie returning to the firefly hospital… Joel racing after her, pulling her in for this hug like they’ve done it plenty before, you talk to me…
The devastation in both of their faces when the truth does come out. They both want so badly for this thing not to be here. For everything to be okay.
Then, you get to the theater. Abby is there. I’m thinking: I’ve reached the end! Let’s fucking kill her.
And then….3 years earlier.
I was angry, actually. I did not want to redo these three days as this character I despise! Even though Abby had great gameplay and some awesome fights that were really fun, I found myself just waiting for it to end. I was like game, this bitch killed Joel, sorry but I don’t care about her or her people.
The Tommy sniper bits were amazing and made that all feel worthwhile. Seeing him on the warpath to avenge his brother, and seeing his real darkness through all the evidence he left behind was amazing.
I liked the storyline with Lev and Yara, didn’t like the Owen/Abby abrupt back shots scene. Felt like a very NSFW siblings or dating moment. Not an Owen fan one bit! Felt bad for Mel, even though I didn’t like her as a person. Felt worse for Ellie when she realized what she’d done to her.
Then, finally got back to Ellie at the farm. I was pleading right alongside Dina for her not to go. Joel would have wanted this for her, this safe quiet life with her family. Everything would still be worth it to him if she stayed. He would have fulfilled his purpose. To give Ellie a life.
And then she fucking leaves…even though I knew she would, I was devastated for my Ellie. All I’ve ever wanted since I saw that lil switchblade-wielding lunatic is for her to be safe and happy. But it is in character for her to get in her own way.
Santa Barbara was fun, the Rattlers made me full of rage bc they were so difficult lol but a super unique concept and I enjoyed the play through of those parts a lot.
Ellie being the one to save Abby’s life. I love this. I am biting this I am chewing it I am swallowing it whole. I have so many thoughts on this one choice that I could write another way too long post about it.
Ellie and Abby finally have a fair fight. Even ground, both wounded and weak, both tired of all of this.
I wanted her to kill Abby. Still do, actually. I personally think… you’ve already killed hundreds of people who weren’t even the ones who directly killed Joel lol… but ok. I get what the game was trying to do. I just didn’t roll with it. That’s really my only story critique. And it’s barely a critique cause I like the ending as it is too.
Especially because, after my 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc play through, I grew to like Abby. I enjoyed her scenes and gameplay much more the second go through when I knew what to expect and where it was all going. I always thought her revenge on Joel was fair bc an eye for an eye, he’d do the same thing and Ellie did worse. But looking at her differently helped me enjoy the story more.
It would have hurt a lot more I think, to watch Ellie murder this girl I liked, and in doing so doom the little boy she’d sought to protect. Abby and Lev at the end as a mirror for Joel and Ellie in tlou1 was just… how can I make out with a concept? So. Good.
Ellie’s ending is so gut-wretching and sad I can barely even talk about it.
She lost everything. Her biggest fear was ending up alone. Joel died before she could make things right with him, she lost Dina and Jesse and JJ and Tommy.
The flashback with Joel to the night before he died did provide me a little solace. Merely in the fact that Ellie was able to come out to him, something she was scared to do, and knew that he loved and accepted her as she was. (Honestly how could she ever doubt that?) and that he died knowing she still cared for him and wanted him in her life. I just know he must’ve spent that whole night feeling hopeful and anticipatory for the future. Fucking crushing.
When she picks up that guitar, a gift from Joel, the first bridge he rebuilt after their tenuous return to Jackson, the connection he forged between them when something unspoken was trying to pull them apart, the only way he could truly express to her how much she meant to him, and obviously a way Ellie reciprocated that…
Gone. She can no longer do the one good thing that threaded between them even after his death. And she abandons it.
She leaves the guitar there. The guitar she loved so fucking much she got the moth from it tattooed on herself forever.
I don’t know where she’s going. I’ve seen some say maybe she’s going back to Jackson to try and make things right. Unfortunately… that isn’t the interpretation I had.
I do know that this game made me feel things a video game never has. Living with these characters for so long. I felt Joel’s pain when Sarah died in the first one, and that was a sorrow that carried over into every scene of every game. I felt -viscerally- the horror and agony and pure unbridled rage at Joel’s death. I felt each misstep, each loss, each success and each surprise. These characters are not avatars to be played, they are people, and it’s fucking incredible. This story is complex and huge and sometimes really frustrating and unpleasant, and sometimes you hate it and sometimes you love it.
Neil Druckman said that whether people like his stories or hate them, as long as they’re not ambivalent, he’s done his job.
To me, Neil has done his job tenfold.

6. Chompy mage
5. Fiesta
4. Black out
3. Kaos
2. Chain reaction
1. Bouncer
THE WORST: buckshot
PART 13: thoughts over all
So..after ranking every skylander, no I will not do enemies or trapped bosses, I can kinda get a method with them
Magic are based on religions and the arcane
Undead are often dead or malicious
Life are based on flora and fauna
Fire are based on fire, magma, and explosives
Water are based on ice and marine life
Earth are based on rocks and Crystal's with a few rough boys
Air is based on flight, avians or weather
Tech is based on machinery, metal and demolition and man made things
Light is based on holy and benevolent forces
Dark is based conversely on lovecraftian and malicious things
I originally intended on looking at all scrapped skylanders too but I realized there were too many so I only covered the one that was most well known scrapped skylanders
I also noticed some of the sensei's in imaginators were really independent of their element
And another thing was that some skylanders were dropped. In the original generation they had 4 skylanders and then replaced one for giants then again for swap force but the ones they keeped were given ultimate versions that sometimes looked wholly different and then in superchargers some where brought back again ang given new armor.
Anyway I hope you enjoyed this look into skylanders history thank you and have a nice day

15 mutuals*, 15 questions
*if I can come up with that many mutuals' handles when my brain is doing like. dial-up noises rn. can I even answer the questions? let's find out!
thanks to @vcaudley for the tag!
there are (as you have probably noticed) more than 15 questions, so feel free to pick and choose (or just not play, because a tag is not an obligation)
I did 15 plus a bonus question about whales
Are you named after anyone?
my maternal great-grandmother on my grandma's side, who lived to be a hundred
2. When was the last time you cried?
oops, at the end of my yoga class this morning, for no discernible reason :,) just suddenly got the Big Sad and had to go stand in the bathroom for a couple minutes until I calmed down
3. What’s your eye color?
hazel
4. Scary movies or happy endings?
happy endings, we are too soft for scary things in this household
5. Any special talents?
6. Where were you born?
7. What are your hobbies?
8. Have you any pets?
halloween the cat, who enjoys a basket of warm laundry fresh from the dryer and wants to know why you're looking at him all funny when he is simply making use of what is currently the coziest place in the house
Tumblr media
9. What sports do you play/have played?
lol under duress, basketball and track. under my own steam, archery.
10. How tall are you?
shorter than the internet thinks I am, apparently
11. Favourite subject in school?
art
12. Dream job?
gonna echo @vcaudley's "the honest dream is to have enough money to not need to work"
like I don't have a dream job really? obviously I want to have a career as a writer, but...I would rather not depend on it for my income, given how fickle the industry is even IF you manage to sell multiple books, which at this point in my career is no guarantee
so for a day job I'm doing admin work. after a decade of working in grocery stores, I'm happy just to have a full-time job that pays sort of halfway decently, actually has benefits, and doesn't leave me exhausted or keep me constantly working outside my scheduled hours. the millennial dream lolsob
13. Do you prefer owls, capybaras, or flamingos?
(d) all of the above
14. What is your favourite soup?
a tomato-basil soup that in the family we just call winter soup. it's like an extra-hearty tomato-basil soup with carrots and onions and a roux, and you eat it with croutons and sour cream and parmesan
15. What is your favourite…rock (idfk)?
16. Choose a familiar: 1) very dumb, very loving disobedient dog. He loves you but will never listen to you ever 2) a raven that speaks but it only ever shrieks the name of various fast food restaurants 3) a toad that screams like a teenage boy instead of croaks
I will take the dog and simply always tell him to do bad things so he never does bad things because he disobeys my every word. if he loves me I will get cuddles and also I will not have to deal with shrieking.
17. Which planet do you feel like would be kind of an asshole if you met them?
uranus, obviously
actually that was mean
sorry, uranus
18. if you were a worm would you love me? this worm question courtesy of ✨ @/legiomiam✨
no bc I don't know you but I'm sure you're a lovely person
19. Least favourite type of clothing?
20. You are now in a horror movie—so sorry. Chance of survival?
probably zero since I'm very soft and also have to investigate every noise bc it's better to get up and find out what's making it than lie in bed being scared of an unknown noise 😅
21. Would you rather: the ability to instantly grow a perfect mustache, or ability to talk to vegetables?
22. What do you think of whales?
I think they're neat
tagging for optional gameplay: @victoriacbooks, @mslanna, @erinfulmerwrites, @avery-ames-personal, @amarajlynn, @wordsofrablack, @chatterboxprotocol, @danaiwrites, @doom-inique-writes, @gryffindorkswin, @luv3horse, @lucymason217, I think this is less than 15 but oops I'm also tagging you, if you're reading this and waiting for someone to tag you so you can play

My Top Games of All Time List
This is my Top Games Experiences of All Time List. The rating of this is based on memories. I know some of these were in different orders on my lists for the previous years, but this list is based on how I feel about them today, which may change again in the future.
I've put a "thought" next to each. Some of these you can click on. Some of these you could play someday. I'd recommend trying any!
The Tops
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
My best game experience. I live in Michigan, so the waters of the Greek Isles? Like nothing I've experienced, but this game helps me imagine it. Then, place a great game in this world? Like, So Much game too? Great. Just great.
Saints Row the Third
My original experience with is what I chase in every video game I played. It was just… fun. Stupid, but exciting fun. It's wacky in story and style, you collect stuff, and you the skill tree is addicting. All about this.
Read Dead Redemption
This game impressed the heck out of me on first playthrough. It was so epic. The different biomes and acts to the game and different cities. It was not only sprawling in space, but in story and scope.
Control
To me, this game was all about the details. In the effects, in the environment, in the lore. Also, gameplay was slick and mood was awesome.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Nothing like this story. It felt like a prestige TV series, but not a boring something to watch but an exciting thing to play.
Batman: Arkham Knight
This is my pick to represent the entire series. This is not everyone's favorite, but it really grabbed me some reason. I love the city, the shooting, the "refresh" of the action gameplay, and it was one of the first Photo Modes I played with - which blew my mind.
Far Cry 6
Not only best of the series, but best FPS-Open-World period.
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Thick with style, short, impactful.
Bioshock
Great graphics, style, and in-game storytelling.
Fallout 3
My intro to open world games. Massive game.
Duke Nukem 3D
My intro to what FPSs could do.
Doom II
My intro to FPSs.
Sonic 2
Perhaps the first full game I beat. I was really proud. Replaying enough to get this one "programed" this soundtrack into my head…
Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube)
Playing back in the day at a friends was just simply a good time.
Resident Evil Village VR
Wacky, weird, and great in VR.
Tomb Raider (1)
Formative.
Sam & Max Hit The Road
Formative.
Tom Clancy's The Division
One of the best open-world (modern-city) games in my opinion. This one in a quarantined New York City. No cars, so all walking on foot. The cover based shooting felt really "professional." Super slick.
Dead Rising 2: Off The Record
The benefits of the sequel tech, but also an unprecedently "redo" with a redirection to wild fun. Super great.
Watch Dogs 2
The best open-world (modern-city) games in my opinion. A solid story with great style and so much to see. Lots of great touches and unique things to the series. Far better than the original. Just try it!
The Evil Within 2
This was the only game that made me feel kind of sick in my throat from some of the horror elements. So, definitely impactful to me.
Dragon Quest Builders 2
I thought this series was great. Some parts felt too long, but that's what also gave it the feel of accomplishment after you spent so much time in a world and completed it. The best "building" game in my mind.
Ultimate Spider-man
The first of the Spider-man games that really clicked for me. This was a great experience for me at the time. I played several times. I loved the style.
Resident Evil 2 (remake)
The best remake of anything I played. Genius.
Super
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Best in this series so far. Flawed, yes, but the experience at the time was unparalleled.
Prey
It takes a lot from other games, but it does it well!
Akiba's Trip
I like the cut of this games' gib.
Marvel's Midnight Suns
By far the best of the "series" of isometric Marvel strategy games.
Star Trek: Resurgence
Best Star Trek game, and one of the best sci-fi Adventure Games I've played.
Bully: Scholarship Edition
I loved the world and how it opened up, the seasons, the stories, the "classes minigames," etc. It didn't have the "highs" of some other games, but there really weren't any "lows" in this game in my memory!
TRON 2.0
Better than the movies to me. It just made a lot of sense, and also played darn well.
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts
The best vehicle builder game in my opinion.
Metal Gear Solid V
Other than Death Stranding, this is the only Kojima game I've played all the way through. And I’m putting this one on the list instead just because it got me just as much or more weirdness, but faster.
Tomb Raider (reboot)
This really shocked me in how "cool" a reboot could be. Many things from this game I won't forget. Best in this series in my mind.
Astro's Playroom
Slick as heck.
Luigi's Mansion 3
The only one of the series I've played, but I'm guessing the best. This is just really great.
Freedom Fighters
I've been playing recently even.
GTA San Andreas
The best one in my mind. There was nothing like the Act change where you had to go into exile. It made you do new gameplay, explore new areas, all these things in the same game.
The Crew
Some people rip on this game as not being exactly a street to street rebuild of the United States, but that would be terrible. THIS is the best version of a real coast-to-coast driving game thus far. Technically, The Crew 2 has better graphics, but that's not even a game. THIS is a game. It's not just a tech demo like the sequel.
Super Mario Odyssey
Perfect game.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
See our podcast episode about this: link
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2
The best LEGO game in my mind. Fully of characters and places and styles and jokes and it's completely beatable.
Zombie Army 4: Dead War
This series is wild. This is the most advanced in this series thus far.
Hitman: Absolution
The best in the series in my mind. This was the last before a reboot.
Katamari
Of course.
No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way
Back in the day, this was packed full of gameplay and style.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Back in the day, this was slick.
Ratchet & Clank - A Rift Apart
The best of this series. Looks like a Pixar movie and plays great too.
Rocksmith
I learned some bass using this.
Blood and Truth
The first VR game I played that was a "real game." Not to mention, unique in being a fast paced shooter.
Sniper Elite 5
I liked this entire series, so this is the most advanced version thus far.
South Park: The Fractured but Whole
This game literally surprised me in how actually funny it was. Best South Park thing, better than the show.
Sunset Overdrive
Some people rip on this one online, but I love the weird and wacky style, and the gameplay is fast and unique.
Sacred 3
A game I played long after its release, but it was just a fun and fast paced game.
The Godfather: The Game
A strange game I played on PC. Some pretty unique ideas, lol
Uncharted 2
One of the best in the series in my mind.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
It was the best game I played that summer, when I was really lonely at my internship in Ohio.
Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance
The best of the series in my mind. I really liked how slow the story started, from your family owned business to being part of the Rebels.
Resident Evil Revelations 2
This game was a weird one, but when I played the collection of the episodes - it was a like playing a "hidden" game no one knew about. Oddly, one of my top RE games.
Guacamelee 2
One of the few "hard" games I've played all the way through. But, it was all doable!
Void Bastards
A viable rougelike. And now that I think back, a Boomer Shooter too?
Dead or Alive 4
What can I say? Good gameplay, wacky style, and the FPS on Dreamcast was wild.
Great
Ghostwire: Tokyo
Great style. Nothing like it in an FPS.
HUNTDOWN
Unique retro style game with slick, die and repeat gameplay.
The Medium
One of the few "real horror" games I've played. But it got me really engaged and I enjoyed from start to finish.
Prototype 2
Best of this series. This game is extremely playable.
Dance Central 2
I first played this series at a friend's, then I bought the whole setup. I don't know where my Kinect got to…
Shovel Knight
This one really surprised me. I hadn't played a lot of "hard" games like this one, but it played SO well.
Fallout 2
I played a lot.
Bulletstorm
'tude
FEAR 2
A good one in the series. Story is all out of whack, but allows for a great game "world."
Titan Quest
I never did the Diablo thing, but this one grabbed me for some reason. I played through several times.
Alien: Isolation
Superb style and pacing.
Alien Shooter: Vengeance
I played back on PC in the old days. I really never played anything like it before, or since.
Crackdown 3
I liked the series, and this one is the most polished.
da blob 2
I don't think about often, but I remember fondly.
Dishonored 2
The best of the series for me. Like the original, but amped up.
Star Wars: Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight
The best star Wars game I played for a long time. A great mix of the FPS, the lightsaber, characters, and even FMV stuff!
Star Wars: Tie Fighter
I still remember flying with Vader, and really hoping he would approve of me.
Trover Saves the Universe
A groundbreaking VR game, but also game. It was subversive to what a game "should be" like. This game usually goes left when it's supposed to go right.
The Talos Principle: Deluxe Edition
One of the few puzzle games I completed. The style and world was trippy/cool.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
The best of the series in my memory.
Dying Light
Not a lot from this games sister series grabbed me really, but this one did. I felt like it just all came together "right."
Freedom Force
One of the first games with a deep style I played. Then I found out who John Kirby was later.
Hitman (1)
I had some good memories with this one.
The Witcher 3
Iconic.
Sackboy Adventures
The only Playstation platformer that rivals Nintendo ones.
Assassin's Creed Syndicate
I loved the style on this one. I think I near 100%'d it.
Mirror's Edge Catalyst
I liked the original, and this one made it playable. No other gameplay like it that I know of.
Portal 2
The original is slick, but this one is a full game.
Red Faction: Armageddon
In this game, you really can destroy everything in it. Even walkways you need to continue on. Thus, they have a "nanotech" tool to rebuild stuff. It's the only way a game can really let you destroy everything in the space.
Remember Me
A unique sci-fi game with super cool ideas. Great style too.
Life is Strange
I never got much into sequels or other "emo" games, but this one hit me at the right time. Love the soundtrack.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas: 2
I played this one way back. Best of the series in my memory.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
The best of the series for me. It uses the top tech, and it's short.
Titanfall 2
Best pilot/mech gameplay I've had.
Outlast II
Some scary memories from this one. Very dark, as in almost no light in some scenes. It's an experience.
Steam World Dig 2
All these Steam World games are quality, but this one grabbed me and was easy and short enough to finish.
Detroit: Become Human
This game seems to be made fun of by a lot of people online, but I started, was engaged, and finished. The best David Cage game I've played.
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
The only fighter jet game I've ever started and finished. So, in my mind, the best one.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood
Gameplay wise, my favorite of the new series.
Cat Quest
A unique hack and slash game where you mostly play on the "map" screen. Good sense of humor and fun.
Journey to the Savage Planet
FPS Roguelike with a great sense of humor.
Honorable Mentions
Mass Effect 2
Best in the series.
The Saboteur
One of the first games I felt like I wanted to "get everything on the map."
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The entire series was interesting, but this was the best playing for me.
Dead Space 2
The better of the two
Monkey Island 3: The Curse of Monkey Island
Encapsulates a certain sense of humor. Made me wish for warm climates.
Majin and the Forbidden Kingdom
Interesting puzzle game.
FF9
The first half was solid.
50 Cent: Blood on the Sand
Actually… a good Cover-Based-Shooter for the time.
Alice: The Madness Returns
Took the idea of the original, but made it look and play good!
Shadow Complex
A PS Now discovery. Quite fun.
Slayers X
A perfect homage.
Amped 3
I remember using my digital camera to take some videos of my screen of replays of my best runs.
SSX (reboot)
Introduced me to some great music.
Bayonetta
You can't deny the style, but I never got into the gameplay.
Beyond Good & Evil
Could have been greater, if they were only a bit more focused.
Binary Domain
Uniquely experimental. I enjoyed playing with friends.
Nights of Azure
Unapologetically alternative
Black & White
Interesting attempt, if nothing else.
James Bond 007: Blood Stone
I didn't like this series of the movies, but I liked this.
Captain America: Super Soldier
At the time, this was alright.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Not many of these grabbed me, but this one did perfectly.
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Had a lot of fun sci fi ideas. A good looking game for it's time.
Conan
Okay. It looked good. It had topless women in it on PS3.
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Dark game with mix of investigation and grimy violence.
Dark Void
The best "jet pack" game I've played. Activating it indoors had a 90% chance to kill you, just like you'd expect!
Dante's Inferno
The goth, metal, emo, dark, in your face style was unique and not really done to this extent again. It went all in on style, with only tolerable gameplay.
The Darkness II
I was considering putting the first one on here because of its innovations, but this one was better to play.
Deadpool
One of the most humor based games I've played. And gameplay is o.k.
Fable
Great sense of humor and style. Better than all the sequels in my mind.
Far Cry 2
I just remember having to keep getting these very hard to find malaria pills to stay alive. Not many games have your character just die if they can't find an actually tough to find item.
Folklore
Felt like an indie comic somehow. Odd style.
Freelancer
Early "open world" stuff.
Tearaway: Unfolded
Full of gimmicks and weirdness. Hard to forget some of the strange things they tried.
Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes
Simple and unique gameplay. Would make a good, modern mobile app.
Lollipop Chainsaw
Trash. But, like, as in "Trash Cinema." As in, good.
Lost Planet 3
I'll never forget the feeling of being a lone contractor on this hostile ice planet. It was one of the first games with a "vibe" I remember
Metro Exodus
I always wanted to like this series, and the is the one that allowed me
Murdered Soul Suspect
Never seen an adventure game with this kind of plot before, or since
Oni
Very unique, experimental gameplay. No one did this control scheme again, but it was a unique idea for the time.
Overlord
Great sense of humor and unique (gameplay)
Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain
I remember trying to wrap my head around the plot/mechanics of this. Both might have been beyond me at the time
Splatterhouse (PS3)
Tough to play now, but parts were striking upon release
Gal*Gun 2
Nothing like it (except for Gal Gun 1)
School Girl Zombie Hunter
Very unique
Thank you for reading. I love you.

Demon ideas that (Kinda) exist in both/either fan projects and/or the series
Tumblr media
(This comparison image is made by Shadesmaster, who also made a lot of mod/map works for Doom, Heretic and Quake)
Some interesting observations to have is comparing some mods/wads/assets to the games and see certain ideas exist in both areas, in some way or another.
Sometimes it's by coincidence or fans "backporting" elements from the series to a mod.
Other times, it's theories on whether or not id is influenced by someone's fan project.
Or it's just how so much is done with Doom that some people end up having similar ideas.
It's also a way to think of whether or not a certain concept is "canon" if it exists in any official capacity.
Because there will be differences.
Basic zombie melee fodder
Most zombies ever since D3, because even D2RPG had non-soldier zombies, so it's a very basic idea.
D3 even had zombies with a monkey wrench, which might've inspired fan ideas like scientist zombies with axes.
Sometimes in the series, they can be creative like 2016's cyclop looking possessed.
Hellhound/dog enemy
D1RPG and the Marauder's wolf, along with maybe the unused 2 headed dog for D64.
Worm demon
FreeDoom's Pinky replacement is obvious.
D2016 did had a worm demon but you only fought it when it was piloting a biomechanical "mech", so it barely counts.
Exploding enemies
In mods, it could be anything ranging from a red mean Imp simply exploding upon death or even that one Realm667 "cyber-imp" like demon whose death summons an exploding orb that shoots fireballs in all directions.
Or even a walking barrel with legs.
In the official games, you get the possessed engineers/Cueballs, modern Lost Souls and D1RPG's Revenants.
Gargoyle/flying imp-like demon with wings
A basic idea, partially because of things like Heretic/Hexen's winged imp-like enemies and Wolfenstein SoD's Angel of Death.
Doom Eternal gave us the Gargoyle but even D64 had statues of gargoyles.
Plasma rifle zombie
In mods, it's a basic "expansion" to Zombiemen carrying the same weapons as Doomguy and dropping them upon death.
Since 2016, it's a sort of "yes but no" situation because the possessed soldiers are somewhat "reinventions" of the Zombiemen in terms of style and gameplay.
Even then, it's still canon that Elite and ARC soldiers carry Plasma Guns.
But would fans accept enemies with access to not only the same weapons but even the weapon mods as well?
Plasma Revenant
A very specific idea but some mods do it. Officially, imagine if the Plasma Powered Revenant skin was an actual new enemy.
A new "demonic head" type
After the Cacodemon and Pain Elemental, id still hasn't given us a new member of this family.
With mods, you have some demons like these that aren't just mere sprite edits and can be more unique in terms of visuals and gameplay.
Some are even too unique that they don't seem related to Cacos or PE's at all (Or at least use a different base like the Iron Lich from Heretic).
Poison enemy
In mods' case, it's probably inspired by Hexen and the idea is a basic health drain attack.
D2RPG had an Imp variant with a burning fire attack that shorted for some time.
In the main series, there's Cybermancubi (If creating hazardous floors counts) and Cursed Prowlers (A more complex idea, let's say).
Grenades or flamethrowers
In mods, i specifically recall cyber-Barons shooting grenades and Zombiemen with flamethrowers.
For grenades, we had D2016's SMM, Eternal's Arachnotron and maybe some other example like Davoth.
Flamethrowers are obvious: Mancs and Mecha Zombies.
Teleporting enemy
Wraiths and Prowlers.
Though it also depends if people expect "instant" teleportation and not "enemy becomes invisible/non-solid for a while" in case developers want to avoid potential game breaking issues.
Multiple projectiles at once
Doom 2 already started this with the Mancubus but mods explore this with stuff like "what if a Cacodemon shot 3 projectiles at once?".
D64 has the Arachnotron shoot 2 plasma balls at once, the Mother Demon's attacks, even D3 had some example like the Hell Guardian shooting multiple fireballs, 2016 had a tri-projectile attack from the Hell Guard, then there's the Prowler's tri-shot, i guess Samur and Blood Maykrs etc.
I expect Mighty Doom to have a lot of examples of this.
Ranged attacks on melee enemies
Like when a Lost Soul variation can shoot projectiles or that one cyber Pinky edit with a chaingun on its mouth.
Officially, D2016 did an opposite thing where Hellknights became melee focused and no longer throw fireballs.
Laser attack
D2016 had the Hell-razer and maybe the SMM with laser beam attacks, while Eternal had a laser beam attack from the IOS.
(And how could i forget the Harvester? Also had a 5 projectile attack too)
Both Tyrants and 2016 Cyberdemons have quick railgun lasers.
In mods, there are some examples of laser beams (Sometimes being just very close projectiles if some modders couldn't figure out proper laser attacks) and Zombiemen with Rail guns (Partially because of that one popular Rail gun for the player which i think comes from Skulltag).
Another fan example being Revenants with Rail guns.
Upper half design
Everyone already knows that one red Baron edit with no legs but instead it has flames and it floats in the air.
D3 RoE has the Helltime Hunter which is close to that concept, whereas phase 2 DHunter uses rockets to float.
Cyber minotaur that isn't a Cyberdemon
Some mods make cyber variations of Barons.
Officially, i guess there's RoE's Bruiser, DHunter and the original box art showing a red demon design that's not ingame.
Lion
That one stone face texture probably inspired that lion Baron enemy with the shield (Said shield also resembling the Evil Eye prop).
But it's an idea that was never done officially.
Centaur
Also not a thing officially. Whatever mods did this, it's probably because of the centaur enemies from Hexen.
"medieval fantasy" enemies
Obviously some Doom mods would borrow elements from the likes of Quake and Heretic etc.
In some contexts, it could be Hell aborbing Earth's medieval elements, corrupting souls of medieval knights or demons just having medieval-like elements.
D2016 came up with the Sentinels, which are fantasy/sci-fi knights and their own setting.
This obviously leads to the Marauder.
But the lion enemy i mentioned also predates the Gladiator, the idea of demons using weapons and shields like warriors.
2016's Hell Guards have concept art where they look different and wore armor and carry hammers or something.
Hooded enemy
Like a demonic wizard or one of those Dark Bishop/Disciples enemies from Heretic/Hexen.
D2RPG had the Watcher/Brier design.
But some mods also have Zombies with hoodies or gun carrying "cultists", as if Doom had its version of Blood's cultist.
"Armored" demons
Some mods have the "Terminator" which is like a demon that looks like a robot and has like a machinegun/grenades etc.
I guess Doom's official equivalent is TAG2's armored Baron unless i'm forgetting something.
Fire Baron
A very basic Realm667 concept.
Eternal's take on it has fire blades, so it's a bit different.
Stone Imp.
Funny enough, a reverse to above because the Realm667/mod version has a more unique design (Like a classic Imp with no neck because it has like an hunchback thing connecting their shoulders to the neck or whatever) while TAG2's Stone Imp is a recolor.
Black helmet Chaingunner
To be fair, whoever made that black helmet Chaingunner in some mods was probably inspired by D3's Z-Sec.
BFG enemy.
In mods, it's usually that one Commando Zombie with a BFG.
In D3, your own boss becomes a tank monster and uses the gun against you.
Chainsaw enemy.
Like the Plasma and BFG stuff mentioned above, also extending on enemies having access to the player's arsenal.
D3 has the Sawyer who i think uses the same attacks of it on the player and even drops a chainsaw after death, so it's an extention to that system.
D2RPG had the Sawcubi monsters.
DHunter comes packed with a nice D64 homage and considering how the player's chainsaw in Eternal works, it may be expected that DHunter's chainsaw works the way it does.
Female enemies
Doom technically has female demons (SMM, Mother Demon, Vagary, Summoner, Whiplash and the unused D64 HR Giger lady) and outside of that, there's the Khan Maykr.
But some mods also tackle on female scientists/zombies which tries to extend on the setting.
Though stuff like succubi or very humanoid demons may feel out of place (Depending on how its done that is).
Jetpacks
Some mods did tackle on this idea, like Zombies with jetpecks or even stuff like Mancubi with jet rockets replacing their legs.
Modern Doom's most obvious example is the Revenant and maybe Eternal's Soldiers having jet boosters on their back.
Even D3's Lost Soul sort of counts.
"Demonic" tech on demons
There are popular versions of Mancs/Revs/Arachnos with "tech" that looks more Hellish and Hell-Forged is an obvious example.
Eternal introduced Cultist tech but you also had Immora (Which fans may be split on) and i guess the Hell Guards in 2016 being "mech suits".
Because the idea of Hell controlling/using tech was present in the originals obviously.
"Demonic" guns on soldiers
There's that one red armored Former Human carrying the Unmaker (Fanmade version based off Doom Bible, not exactly the D64 one).
I guess the official equivalent is Immora soldiers with the Reaper (Or at least someone in 2016's MP using a more demonic looking armor and using the real Reaper).
Hell "turret"
Some mods use the Evil Eye prop as a turret.
Eternal has its eye turrets too.
Tentacle
An idea that existed in some mods but was probably rare, even if it predates Eternal's official inclusion.
Tentacles on enemies
There were those Arachno/Mastermind edits with tentacles or even floating Mancubi with tentacles
Officially, there's the D3 Caco and i guess Maykrs as a whole.
Smoke-like enemies
Actually, this one might not exist at all in the series unless i'm forgetting.
At least we had TAG1's spirit as far as ghostly enemies can go.
Slime enemies
Also probably not a thing. Most mods who did this were probably inspired by Quake's Spawns or even the Flemoids from Chex Quest.
(I mean, it's also a popular fantasy concept too)
Gold enemies
You know when a Complex Doom addon has those "gold tier" overpowered enemies? I guess in the series, you'd imagine if the Empowered Demon system actually applied some gold aesthetic/skin on an enemy.
Floating cube enemies
Some mods use the IOS' spawn cube as an enemy.
TAG1 had the trial of Maligog, which may not be close.
Wait, what about Eternal's floating skull thingies that drop lava on SGN?
Pig enemy
There's a custom enemy in Realm667 that's like a pig with a gun attached.
Closest to this might be D3's Pinky design and D2RPG's Pinkynator.
Dragons
Even if they're borrowed from sources like Hexen or comparable to the winged Imps i mentioned before.
Anyway, D3's Maleditch and Eternal's Wintherins.
Scorpion
You know how Eternal's Arachnotron looks kinda like a scorpion? Just discovered a similar "Arachnotron looking like a scorpion" design in a mod called "Hellspawn" and the "scorpion mastermind" from 2004's Monster Resource WAD
Alternatively, some mods probably used scorpion enemies from other games.
SSG Zombie
Well, the Marauder has an SSG.
Some mods like to give Zombies a Quad SSG (Worse, i once played a Complex Doom addon where a Zombie had a SIX BARRELED SHOTGUN).
Spider enemies
Some mods borrow them from Blood but then there's the stuff in a (Dead) mod like Doom X which might've been inspired by D3's Trite.
Tank
Some mods imagine the UAC having an extended military and make Zombiemen ride military vehicles that may be taken from Duke Nukem 3D's Pig Cops.
D3 had an half man half tank (Sabaoth) and Eternal had ARC tanks as part of the scenery.
Snake enemy
There's that fanmade Imp variation with a snake tail (Probably taken from Heretic's Ophidian) and FreeDoom's Imp replacement.
Eternal gave us a cybernetic snake-like demon (Whiplash).
"Double" Cyberdemon
When some mods have a Cyberdemon with both cannons/cyberlegs, chances are they thought of it without knowing of D64's unused design.
Techless cybernetic demons
Maybe Wolfenstein's Harbinger of Doom came first before fan takes on the idea (Depending on how difficult sprite editting can be).
But fans did came up with Revenants, Mancubi, Spiderdemons without the tech elements, with a popular example being Arachnotrons in Valiant losing their techlegs and becoming flying enemies with tentacles.
D2016 had a "techless" Mancubus but it was a very different design in general.
Meanwhile, D3 made the Pinky and Lost Soul cybernetic but again, different designs in general too.
Giant Icon of Sin with a body
Everyone will bring up Brutal Doom but i know of Zen Dynamics and maybe that one project by Craneo that also tackle on that idea.
But then there's the stuff of "what if the IOS is his own character AND the leader of Hell" vs Eternal making him as a "weapon" with the soul of Valen's son and under Maykr tech armor.
Or whether or not the IOS could have had a different body.
Meanwhile, D2RPG had a "virtual" IOS and it predates TNT Revilution's design of the IOS.
In a way, what mods/wads can do with the IOS can be interesting because not everyone is a fan of the traditional format.
What else
There's probably some stuff i could've mentioned.
When D2016 was revealed, people theorized if id were taking influence from Brutal Doom, which i think even led to SgtMarkIV being somewhat displeased.
And there were still arguements about the game's melee system (Development of D4 already having said system, taking influence from Serious Sam 3's melee grab maybe, other elements related to the Slayer like the Doom comic, Death Battle, imageboard copypastas etc).
But the Fire Baron in Eternal is when i actually thought "wait, is someone at id taking inspiration from mods?".
Because Bethesda was once accused of copying a quest from the NV mod "Autumn Leaves" in Fallout 4: Far Harbor.
And i've already talked about how Doom fans influenced the actual series or at least its image in people's mind (Even made a post about the Cosplay Slayer skin incident).
The idea of a game taking ideas from mods or fangames seems weird, specially if no actual credit is given to the creators and they get nothing in return.
(Even worse if it affects people's access to playing/making mods or fangames but at least Doom modding seem to be somewhat safe, even if John Romero still can't share Doom related assets due to ZeniMax being stingy)
But then you have the add-ons for the Unity Doom 1/2 ports and maybe other examples like the D64 EX dev being one of the people involved in the official D64 modern release.
So if id Software collaborated with fans in certain projects like spin-offs or stuff, would that make it less bad?
At least in a way that respects not just those modders/creators/etc but even fans/players: Specially if you want to give fans the impression that a certain product is still good on its own and isn't a rip-off just because free mods exist.
Because when you think about it: Most of Doom modding/mapping/fan creations/etc is essentially a fan saying "this is cool and i like to see it in Doom" as if they're an advanced form of fanfiction.
Specially mods with concepts like crossovers such as Samsara or "modernizing" the game like those Smooth/Beautiful Doom mods.
When a mod isn't based off a different series, original characters or memes, it's essentially Doom fans doing their own fanservice and almost acting like they own the series.
You could think of Doom modding like an alternate timeline where Doom had more games but never had any modding scene, "reboots"/changes of art style/direction or even "familiar" games like Quake if they were literally part of the Doom brand. (Specially since Doom is a gaming "titan" like Mario, Street Fighter, Pacman, Final Fantasy etc yet it doesn't have as many games/releases/material, so the "expansion" of this series really is the fanbase)
Some specific mods even exist to answer certain questions, like Final Doomer is the answer to "what if Final Doom had its own weapons for both episodes?".
So perhaps, there are things that id could learn from fans but in a way that doesn't feel bad.
In general, Doom is a series that a lot could be done with: So i guess with how much id can borrow from mods or other games, they could have a lot of ideas to justify a new game or two.
They could even be creative to make things different as in, who knows if the Gauss Cannon and Ballista weren't created because of Rail guns in FPS games and that one from Skulltag.
At the same time, even the character of the Doomslayer has some fan related origins.
And i guess copying something from the area of "mods and wads" has its differences from including memes and jokes (Specially if a meme like "DOOT" is referenced too many times but id Software isn't obligated to reference FIREBLU related jokes).
And speaking of Doom's versatility: The existence of some features in the series being comparable to mods could mean that some concepts are "canon": Like how some mods have exploding mines as items and D2016's multiplayer has the Kinetic Mine.
Or even how D3 had its own version of Half-Life's Gravity Gun: You just think of features that exist in the series and assume "it's canon" when a mod has it too.
Obviously why some mods like MetaDoom are interesting (They make the "Doom universe" feel bigger) but also puts into thought ideas like "what if Doomguy was a playable fighter in Smash and we were to explore the series?".
Maybe people like when Doom technically gets "new features" but what if that makes people think how much is done with the official games has an impact with how fans implement ideas?
Not like it'd prevent people coming up with ideas for mods just because some would exist in an official game.
I bet some people have that "fanboy" part in them that goes "man i wish this thing would be canon" even if it clashes with the other side being "this doesn't seem ethical".
Another thing is the "canonicity" of ideas and the difference between "canon" and "official", when it comes to companies owning/controlling properties and so on.
It's why Final Doom, even if NOT CANON, is secretly "more canon" than John Romero's SIGIL because id Software technically owns Final Doom while SIGIL just happens to come from Romero and then made as one of the first add-ons in the Unity ports.
It made me think of "what if Doom was public domain or had a Touhou situation where people could make fangames (With some rules) and make money from them?": Because if it's not under the property owner, it may not be "canon" unless there's some exceptions to the rules (But it can also depend on how picky some nerds are).
When i made that "meytr" Rentry post, a lot of ideas are obviously copied from other people's works (And the bottom section of that file even has names of creators and projects from the fanbase or related to it).
So i guess when i write this, i'm not jut opening a can of worms but also showing conflicting ideas as if different parts disagree with each other.
Now i wonder: Do people think a new Quake game would take influence from Arcane Dimensions? And does a guilty part of them even wants too? That sort of "it'd be wrong but..." feeling.
This also reminds me of when people said D2016 "confirmed" that "every WAD is canon" because of some lore quote about "time and dimension": It might be taken out of context (Like a lot of things) but even if it's true, it's not like id Software could easily lift designs from fan mods and put them in official games or promo material.
(And also if people don't just bring up this "fact" just to make memes about HDoom or Simpsons Doom being canon, as opposed to someone thinking about other kinds of mods)
(AND also how much of the new Doom universe appeals to newer fans, even if some elements are fanservice to older fans etc)
Something else i could bring up is how modding itself is a form of game development or even "practive" and the examples of game devs that used to be modders (Or even mods that became/inspired actual games).

Blood (1997)
Tumblr media
Blood is a 1997 first-person shooter developed by Monolith Productions. It’s built in the Build engine, like Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior, and Blood is regarded with them as one of the three most important games made in that engine. And of the three, Blood is the least popular, but also the best.
This has much to do with the superior characters, theme and atmosphere of Blood. Blood aims for a gothic horror mood, and nails it in the level and character design. Not that Blood takes itself seriouslyby any means, this is a dark horror comedy. The game takes great fun in its use of horror clichés, the zombies have the battle cry moan of “brains”, there are evil cultists who speak a made-up language in silly voices, it’s so fun. And it takes a certain glee in just how over-the-top its violence is, similar to the Evil Dead movies, which are referenced extensively. This kind of humor is right up my alley, and has aged a lot better than the misogynist and racist stereotyping of Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior.
All of these shooters used the capabilities of the Build engine to have their main characters talk and make situation-appropriate comments and Caleb in Blood is by far the most appealing of the three. Duke Nukem is a childish misogynist, Lo Wang is that and a racist caricature, my boy Caleb is a genuinely fun amoral and violent badass. And I do mean amoral, he is fighting the demonic forces of Tschernobog in this game for personal revenge and was once part of his cult, and he doesn’t care for the innocents tortured and murdered by the cult. The game is very explicit about this and it’s part of its dark tone. Not that Caleb isn’t funny. His one-liners, many of them movie quotes like Duke, are rather fun, and Stephan Weyte’s vocal performance is excellent. He laughs maniacally when blowing things up too sometimes, which is great. Caleb’s one morally redeeming trait is his love for his girlfriend Ophelia who promptly gets fridged (the one major note of misogyny in this game, minor compared to Duke Nukem 3D or Shadow Warrior).
This game is just not a triumph of atmosphere, but it has excellent FPS gameplay. Blood does similar interesting things with the Build engine as Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior did, the convincing faking of room-over-room, destructible and interactive environments and even secondary fire for weapons.
Tumblr media
Caleb has one of the more interesting arsenals of a shooter game protagonists. You get a flare gun that sets enemies on fire, dynamite to throw and blow things up with, a napalm launcher that is basically an RPG whose explosions also sets things on fire, a spraycan and lighter combo that acts as an improvised flame-thrower (there is a setting enemies on fire theme here), a tesla gun that throws balls of electricity, a life leech which is a skull on a stick that can use your health as ammo and a voodoo doll that hurts everything in front on you when you stab it with a pin. The most normal weapons are the Thompson submachine gun and the double-barrel shotgun, clearly inspired by the super shotgun in Doom II. But the shotgun is so fun to use, since it’s a good shotgun, devastating at close range and useful at medium distances. And the thompson is a good FPS SMG too, with a fun alt-fire where it sprays bullets left and right for dealing with crowds.
And this works in conjunction with an interesting enemy roster. You have zombies who can only melee you and are fairly weak, but are fast and unless you use overwhelming firepower (like blowing them up with dynamite) will fake death and get up again. There are bulky fat zombies who can tank a lot of damage but vulnerable to fire. There are human cultists who are fairly easy to shoot down, but dangerous due to their long-range hitscan guns. Demon dogs that spew fire but are weak to electricity from the tesla gun. And several more, including living flying gargoyles. The variety of enemies and weapons create interesting combat scenarios where you have to keep moving to dodge attacks and switch weapons on the fly.
The level design can be a bit too maze-like at times, but it takes great advantage of the enemies and weapons. And the gothic-themed art design is great.
All this, the engaging action gameplay, with the convincing gothic horror atmosphere and the game’s dark humor makes Blood such a great game, and the best game on its engine. There is a 2019 remaster/recreation of the game and its expansions for modern versions of Windows by Nightdive Studios called Blood: Fresh Supply that can be bought on Gog.com. The GOG release also includes digital versions of the original DOS release of the collection One Unit Whole Blood I wanted to run the game natively on Linux, so I used that version, plus the sourceport Nblood. I had to build the port from source and also the instructions to get the cutscenes out of the GOG Version’s bin/cue files are a bit misleading*, but it was worth it. Running this game natively and with proper mouse aim is great. And Blood is a great shooter, one of the best in the era before Half-life, a game that holds up today.
*(the “game.gog” and “game.ins” files Gog gives you if you install their version are actually .bin and .cue files respectively (probably made from the original game disc), copy them, rename the file extensions to game.bin and game.cue., and then mount the .bin file as virtual CD and then copy the “movies” folder out of the virtual cd. I don’t think you would have much luck with game.ins/game.cue file alone as the instructions suggest)

Doom WADs’ Roulette (2006): Operation Overlord
You know, after playing through this total conversion, it made me miss WADs filled with slaughter maps, like both Hell Revealed WADs, Alien Vendetta, both Scythe WADs, etc. With these at least I felt like it wasn’t filled with 24/7 bullshit time like this map/WAD.
G5: Operation Overlord
Tumblr media
Main author(s): Nigel Rowand (Enjay)
Release date: August 11th, 2005 (original release)/January 2nd, 2006 (revision b/GZDoom release)
Version played: Revision b
Required port compatibility: GZDoom
Levels: 1 (MAP01 replacement)
Operation Overlord is one of the more unique specimens when it comes to Doom WADs. Its author, Nigel Rowand, created this map for a friend who wanted something that, quoting, [you] could do lots of sniping, hide behind stuff and fight enemies in depth positions where the enemies do not chase you all over the level. Well, looks like the friend got what he wanted. I don’t think most of the WADs enjoyers wanted something like this.
But why is this TC map like this? Don’t worry, I’ll get to it in time.
The basic plot of this map is that there are prisoners held by evil south-Americans. Now go save the prisoners.
...
Still sounds better than CoD: Ghosts.

One thing I can give credit for this map is that it looks rather good. Operation Overlord is based on the WWII operation of the same name, where Allied forces stormed Normandy (including the most notable D-Day in the history of Earth). And let me tell you, this map definitely feels like you are storming the Omaha beach and killing enemy soldiers (even though it’s a more futuristic version of those events).
Shame that it also has these annoying weapon-picking and explosion sound effects from most of the pretentious (G)ZDoom WADs.
The two music tracks that play before and after reaching trenches are also good. They have the warfare vibe that fits with this map.

As I said earlier, your task is to free prisoners. You have to go through the beach where you have to set some charges to blow up barbed wire. Then there is a minefield, trenches with three keys to grab from the guard posts, and finally, the bunker where the prisoners are. It’s a rather simple task and I don’t think you will get lost playing this map.
Like in Heretic/Hexen, you have some inventory items. In case of this total conversion, there is a portable medikit that heals you by 25% and grenades that are rather pathetic if you ask me.
If you actually manage to pass the beach in Operation Overlord, you definitely deserve a title of a Doom God, for this map is way too fucking hard, even on Hurt Me Plenty. I tried to beat it legitimately three times. I failed every time due to Uber Hoovies devouring all of my health in a second. I had to use God mode to actually see what was behind the beach. And that’s only the beach I described to you. There are still three sections that I mentioned above.

I understand that this isn’t the typical Doom gameplay; that you have to duck behind cover and from one to another (the ducking was implemented before it became an official feature in (G)ZDoom), but even while doing that, there are too many goddamn hitscanners everywhere. Where is the fun in a Doom WAD when you are surrounded by these twats? And no, ducking won’t help you for the long term. You step out by just a single pixel and you turn into a Swiss cheese.
It’s kind of hard to talk about new enemies since most of these are hitscanners + some dogs, rocket turrets, and a pig tank from Duke Nukem 3D.
The worst hitscanners are the previously mentioned uber Hoovies (or as the map likes to call them Inca static guns). Shit ton of damage, shit ton of health, little to no attack wind-up. This map would’ve been actually playable without these wankers.
There are also two new weapons added to your armory. One is Thompson which fires faster than the Chaingun (and it might be slightly weaker than that weapon). The other is Railgun. Just a regular railgun. It can kill uber Hoovies in two shots and each shot costs 10 plasma ammo.

Operation Overload is not worth your time. Sure, it looks like something that would be enjoyed by people who like a more tactical approach, but the sheer difficulty will highly make you lose any interest in playing it. You can pass on this map. You won’t miss much.
I’ve heard there is a sequel/spiritual successor to this map that also won one of the Cacowards but I don’t know if I’ll do a proper review of it when we reach Cacowards 2008. I’ll definitely take a look at it and if it won’t be filled with such an amount of bullshit like this map, I’ll do a review of that WAD.

Next WAD on the list belongs to one of the NDCP contributors. So we will see what he has to offer with his solo project.
See you all next time.
Bye.
