Best Books Read in July 2023
A recap of the best books I read each month in 2023.
The Mirror Season by Anna-Marie McLemore
I read this to fulfill a requirement for class and it was so intense. Magical Realism is slowly growing on me and McLemore is an author who has really helped me appreciate the genre. This is a very loose retelling The Snow Queen but it is primarily about a girl coping with the aftermath of being sexually assaulted. Probably my favorite of their books I've read so far!
The River of Silver by SA Chakraborty
A collection of short stories related to The Daevabad Trilogy from a variety of perspectives over time. It was very enjoyable and a lighter than the original trilogy overall. Highly recommended to fans of the series!!
Honorable mention
That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming
Such a fun book!! Essentially, this is a romance, but the fantasy aspects are a lot of fun and I love the themes of consent that are very present. I love the sense of humor in Lemming's writing and look forward to more of her work in the future!

“Every moment of our life, it goes with us. It lives forever. And a lot of those moments you don't have much say over. So the ones you do, you've got to do everything with them. So that what lives forever is something you want to live with.”

I know it isn’t only Daniel José Older who we need to thank for the cultural shift from italicizing non-English words in novels to not, but thanks dude. It’s one of those things that I forget about until I see it again. Or see the lack of it, the lack of othering it does to the text. It’s really that profound.
And obviously this is my personal bias but it’s especially important for those of us in the diaspora who use non-English words sprinkled throughout our mostly-English speaking lives. Like my abuelita was never & could never be grandma. My family was as assimilationist as they come but that didn’t stop her from refusing to answer to anything but abuelita (no abuela wouldn’t do & she’d be pissed if I tried it lol.)
This post has been brought to you by my new read for today, The Mirror Season. I’ve only just started it but I needed to get this out.
Also if you haven’t seen this qué dramático video from DJO, it’s a classic & you should.

Everyone's always going on about Crowley/David Tennant being the slutty one with his slutty little walk and his slutty and unusual little relationship with furniture but no one talks about slutty Aziraphale/Michael Sheen and his slutty little expressions every time he looks at Crowley, the harlot

Michael Sheen is a master of micro-expressions and knew what he was doing.

ill post my review for the mirror season after i finish my class cause i will be using my assignment for the review and dont want to get caught for plagiarizing myself lol
that being said, its a fantastic novel and i highly recommend it for those who want a beautiful but incredibly intense novel. it is about sexual assault so trigger warning for those going into it

sure steddie dating pre-season 4 is great and all, steve rushing to eddie to check up on him instead of eddie attack him in the werehouse is nice
BUT
steddie hooking up pre season 4, then sorta-almost-dating but they have a big falling out and they dont see eachother until the werehouse IS JUST SO JUICY
even better if they had the argument bcs steve wasnt telling eddie something to protect him from the upside down fuckery. and in the werehouse they lock eyes as eddie realizes what steve has been lying about, and steve (who just realized he was in love with eddie) realizes he failed and eddie is now in the middle of this crazy dangerous shit and he blames himself ofc
and give me robin who knew steve had someone, but he didnt tell her it was eddie. and she connects the dots and looks at steve and they have a little silent conversation bcs holy shit i knew u were a boy kisser but an eddie kisser?!?!

Sometimes, I carry my secrets around, and I barely feel them. Sometimes, I can hold them, like the secret forest taking all of Lock's forgotten trees. Other times, I feel nothing but how that night broke me into pieces, like glass cutting light into different colors. How it made me a girl whose heart is silvered with ice and glass. How it made me a liar. How it made me both more afraid and more reckless.

so……. guess whos back 😀
i have taken a long break from reading because of college apps. my storygraph is plotting revenge. but today for the first time in forever i read something!!! only…. 48 books left to go for my 100 book goal of 2022 😐
the book i read was “the mirror season” by anna marie mclenore. its beautiful. it explores its themes perfectly and brings color to its prose, and im telling you, if i hadn’t read it all during a school day, i would’ve sobbed. moreover, this is probably my first experience with an unreliable narrator, which added so much to the story. it was an easy 5 stars from me, and i’m glad i read it. it does tackle the hard topic of sexual assault and homophobia, but it’s a must-read for all!
