In Moscow you can sit in an enormous restaurant where you don’t know anybody and where nobody knows you, and you don’t feel all the same that you’re a stranger. And here you know everybody and everybody knows you, and you’re a stranger... and a lonely stranger.
Anton Chekhov, The Three Sisters, 31 January 1901

(note: on the pic on the right, Tuzenbach is the man)
Pooka was submitted without propaganda.
Tuzenbach:
One beautiful quote spoken by him: "Well? When we’re gone, men will fly in balloons, change the style of their coats, discover a six sense, perhaps, and develop it, but life will remain just the same–difficult, full of mysteries, and happy. A thousand years from now man will still be sighing: ‘Ah, how hard life is!’--yet he will fear death, exactly as he does now, and be unwilling to die.” I've never seen the acceptance and enjoyment of life, all of it, better expressed.

ok i get why they say scotlan forever now
steeple of an old church in edinburgh. many of the buildings there are made of sandstone so they get darker as they age, but this one stood out to me bc it was considerably darker
the three sisters of glencoe; we were lucky to spot snow on one of the peaks that day
the fairy pools on the isle of skye (definitely the real thing and not another stream you could find just down the road. certainly not lacking in foot traffic)
the ruins of duntulm castle, which are supposedly haunted. at least the lower levels are, seeing as they've been fenced off and you could walk around freely on the cliff
the isle is crawling with sheep and these two were conveniently posed for a photo off the side of the road
eilean donan castle, which was one of the biggest and most well-preserved castles we went in
car bridge we saw on a walk somewhere near the river moriston (i'm assuming). photo was taken on a footbridge right across from it
driving thru farmland during the last morning of the tour ;v;

the three sisters bellatrix black & andromeda black & narcissa black gen | 7k words
but cygnus merely laughed. ‘i have no need of a gift from you, my lord. i have three priceless jewels waiting for me in my house. they are my three daughters, and they are already the most beautiful women in the land. and they shall grow up to be rich and powerful, and their vaults will overflow with gold.’
once upon a time, there were three sisters. and death.
this piece was written for @womenofthehouseofblack, [you can find the other fics in the collection here].
it was the result of an extremely exciting prompt by @broomsticks on the relationship between the black sisters and the deathly hallows, which, naturally, inspired the part of me which loves a good fairytale. [the three sisters is the latest in cautionary tales for young witches, my series of folktale and fairytale retellings in the harry potter universe.]
author's notes under the cut
Tumblr media
the idea of the black sisters as the equivalent of the three brothers from the tales of beedle the bard makes perfect sense to me. they map perfectly onto the brothers of the story: bellatrix, the warrior, who would wish for an unbeatable wand; andromeda, the wanderer, whose loved ones are taken from her and would wish for a way of getting them back; narcissa, the dreamer, who wishes to protect her family from harm.
and, lurking over everything, lord voldemort as death.
this piece has much in common with two others i've written for this fest - nor all that glisters gold and other women and of purer blood [author's notes here and here] - not least in the characterisations of the three girls, with bellatrix chafing against gendered expectations, andromeda being brave and cheeky and striking out on her own, and narcissa finding herself under pressure to conform all the more when her sisters refuse to.
but also in the description of the blacks' house, with its garden full of elders [unlucky], hawthorns [a harbinger of death], and guelder roses [which line the bridge which connects the living and the dead]. the house is - in fact - a reference to a real place: dunluce castle [which is indeed on the road between portballintrae and portrush] in county antrim. the castle, which hangs right on the edge of the sea, looks like a ruin to muggles, but that's just due to its clever enchantments...

Note
Considering noblewomen aren’t expected to cook in Westerosi society, is it therefore implied it would be embarrassing for Lord Borrell to brag about his granddaughter being a great cook if he were talking to a proper lordly lord, and not Davos of House Seaworth? Like, the equivalent of bragging that she really knows how to dig a ditch or something?
Its more of a sign that House Borrell is pretty far down the pecking order and thus closer to smallfolk than your traditional mainland lord. Also, keep in mind, the Borrells are Sistermen. They probably don't give two f*cks what some snotty-nosed blueblood from the Vale or savage northron thinks.
Edit: Can you blame him for being proud though? Sister's stew sounds utterly delicious.
Thanks for the question, anon

Giving my opinion on every Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon ships I could find because I’m bored asf
Sneaker x Greenie: Probably the most popular one, or at least the one I saw most fan arts of. They’re pretty much the cunning trickster and the happy-go-lucky goofball. I get why people like their dynamic so much because I headcanon these two as best friends lmao, but as a couple I’m just "ok"
Slammer x Hider: Brawn and brain, pretty much. I mean, why not? Plus I like the complimentary physical differences, Slammer is your typical muscular bully looking guy, and Hider is the as thin as a matchstick guy. So why not?
Sneaker x Hider: Sneaker would win Hider’s hide-and-seek game by scaring the death out of him. Otherwise, I think it’s because of their pointy head? Okay ship
Greenie x Hider: So, the ship itself isn’t bad, but. I saw things.
Greenie x Golden Greenie: Uhh…
Poltergeist x Hider: I get that people ships them because if their similarities, they both can throw objects(with the exact same sound), they both have artistic abilities, and they’re both pretty thin. Sure why not
Poltergeist x Ancient Poltergeist: Uhh…
Sneaker x Golden Greenie: I mean, it’s pretty much the same as Sneaker x Greenie, but with a greedy Greenie. Okay
Luigi x Greenie: So apparently this ship is a thing. No comment.
Hider x Creeper: Both are sneaky lil goofs that hides somehow. Creeper would canonically cuddle Hider to death. (What do you mean my puns sucks?)
Greenie x Hider x Slammer x Sneaker x Gober: …Well that’s one odd polyship. I won’t comment.
Belinda x Luigi: That’s just because Belinda gave him a flying kiss as a flirt/taunt, can’t blame it though.
Lucinda x Greenie: Oh yeah that’s my otp of LM. Could make an entire essay on why and how I ship them but all I will say is that I love their dynamic of little pranksters that looks like that one cartoon couple with the main boy and the girly girl. I ship it so much
Belinda x Poltergeist: The know-it-all guy with the pretty lady, aka the yassified version of nerd and popular girl. Yeah, I can see why they would fall for each other, and man that actually sound really cute. Great ship
Lucinda x Belinda: …SWEET MANSION ALABAMA
Herlinda x Gobber: Haha get it because they’re fa- More seriously, this ship could work, not my cup of tea though
Lucinda x Leonardo(TMNT): …What
Hider x Belinda: Both are slim and tall, and both have cold colors. I feel like Hider would be the one who flee away after giving her a flower bouquet and Belinda would be the one flirting. Really love this ship actually
Sneaker x Belinda: Belinda really is a dude magnet huh. Much like Hider, I have the feeling Sneaker would be get suddenly awkward and shy around his crush. Like this ship a bit less than with Hider or Poltergeist though
Slammer x Herlinda: I like how it completes the "main ghost trio get shipped with the three girls of the game". I really love their dynamic though, it’s really cute actually. Very nice
The Three Sisters x Dr. Potter: If anything, Potter would prefer Belinda out of the three. Y’know, birds of a feather
The Three Sisters x E. Gadd: I mean, it’s implied E. Gadd has a thing for them, given that he gave them a flower in the credits, but yeah, okay, I approve
Herlinda x E. Gadd: If E. Gadd was giving his flower to Herlinda specifically, sure, I wouldn’t be surprised E. Gadd would date a ghost lady
Grouchy Possessor x Tough Possessor: I really dunno, really, no opinion
Poltergeist x Tough Possessor: Sure? I don’t see any chemistry to be honest. Okay ship
Any ghost x another ghost from the same species(like Hider x Hider): I mean, that sounds kinda weird to me? Like they look related and all but they’re not so it’s okay but it’s still weird? Oh gosh
OC x OC/ OC x Canon: Approved ships, little gems that deserves love as long it’s not illegal
I think that’s everything I could find and man how many little gems of ships I found
EDIT: GUESS WHO FORGOT TWO SHIPS? ME

🌱Root of the Month for July 2023: Squash Leaf 🌱
Tumblr media
Squash Leaf: Squash is one of The Three Sisters (the others being, corn & beans) to us indigenous folks native to this sacred land. The Three Sisters serve as the culinary centerpiece in indigenous cultures across Turtle Island for thousands of years. Waste not, want not; flesh, seeds, leaves - every part of each plant is used in one form or another.  Though Winter Squash comes to mind the most here in the Eastern Woodlands region, Summer Squash is also of use - particularly in warmer climates.
Of the Three, Squash is the Eldest Sister and is planted last among the three in a method presently called, companion planting. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Squash leaves serve a purpose in traditional rootwork/medicine work. While there is little to no information broadcasting the spiritual uses of this flora, we can look to the ancestral practicies as well as the physical & behavior prosperities of the plant to intuitively understand their mystical aspects.
Taxa: Cucurbitaceae/Cucurbita/Moscato, maxima, mixta, or pepo
Folk Nomenclature: Eldest Sister (of Three Sisters)
Native Locality: North & Central America
Phenotypic Traits: Squash leaves are medium to large in size and are broad and kidney bean-shaped. Bright green, roughly-textured leaves feature 5-7 lobes and grow on thick, hairy stems with curling tendrils. Grows as a trailing vine, either on the ground or on trellises and has vibrant yellow flowers when in bloom.
Parts Used: Leaf, Seed
Gender: Unknown
Planetary Ruler: Unknown
Elemental Ruler: Unknown; likely Earth
Traditional Usage in Rootwork: Given as offerings to First Nations ancestors, and certain deified spirits; particularly those outside of the Hoodoo Paradigm, before given back to the Earth. Keep in a bowl in home to draw an abundance of resources & prosperity.
Traditional Medicinal Usage: Leaves are a powerful source of Fe (Iron), K (Potassium), Mg (Magnesium), and Ca (Calcium) as well as Vitamins A-C; with immune boosting benefits. When cooked, Squash leaves have a toothsome texture and a mild, green, spinach-like flavor. THE LEAVES ARE TO NEVER TO BE CONSUMED RAW.

The Isles of Mull, Iona, and Staffa
A long day lay ahead of me on the weekend I decided to go see the Islands of Mull and Iona.  For one thing, the tour left from Glasgow, so I had to take an impossibly early train, which meant I’d have to leave even earlier to walk the mile to the train station.  And when I got there, the ticket machine couldn’t locate my e-ticket, and the ticket counter was dark and closed.  So I wound up having…

A Game of Thrones, Catelyn IV
Captain Moreo Tumitis spoke the Common Tongue fluently, with only the slightest hint of a Tyroshi accent.
He’d been plying the narrow sea for thirty years, he’d told her, as oarman, quartermaster, and finally captain of his own trading galley. The Storm Dancer was his fourth ship, and his fastest, a two-masted galley of sixty oars.
She had certainly been the fastest of the ships available in White Harbor when Catelyn and Ser Rodrik Cassel had arrived after their headlong gallop downriver.
The Tyroshi were notorious for their avarice, and Ser Rodrik had argued for hiring a fishing sloop out of the Three Sisters, but Catelyn had insisted on the galley. It was good that she had.
The winds had been against them much of the voyage, and without the galley’s oars they’d still be beating their way past the Fingers, instead of skimming toward King’s Landing and journey’s end.
So close, she thought.
