March 2023 Update

Spring is in the air... (and hey, the Steam Spring Sale will start March 16).

Dredge is an adventure game where you play a fisherman in a moody, dark world. I played the demo and it was quite fun, so I'm looking forward to it! Releases on March 30.

Melon Journey - Bitersweet Memories comes out March 7, the sequel to an RPGMaker game from 2012. 🐇

The Wreck

The Wreck is a 3D visual novel that tells the story of Junon, a woman who survived a serious accident that cost her dearly. By manipulating time and her memories, we can learn more about her life and relationships, and help Junon to move forward.

❤ A powerful story with mature themes (depression, toxic relationships, grief, etc.) approached in an intimate way without being too melodramatic. ❤ The dubbing was top-notch, and I found the emotions conveyed very accurate and never overdone. The dubbing of Junon in particular makes the character really endearing (especially with her great French accent xD). ❤ The menu interface is very well thought out and is part of the game itself - a great idea!

+/- I found the principle of "rewinding" memories very interesting, the fact that revisiting it several times leads to a more in-depth analysis of the memory, it conveys the fact that the character is in the process of looking back on her life and giving it more meaning, it's really done in a subtle way. On the other hand, the same mechanics become a little too repetitive after a while. +/- There's no real replayability other than choosing different dialogues during conversations to perhaps discover different anecdotes, but this won't influence the story in any way. +/- I like the clean design but I'm not a fan of the jerky animation.

✖ Selecting the "flying" texts wasn't easy with the joystick (my pointer refused to go all the way…). ✖ The final scene is a little disappointing, and the choices offered are not very clear in my opinion.

Once again, The Pixel Hunt studio has succeeded in drawing me into an emotionally-charged story, with its fine writing. On the other hand, as with their previous game Inua, I find that the player is still a little too passive in the events and that the gameplay ideas could be pushed a little further. But in spite of everything, I left it positive and moved, and I'm still curious to discover the future creations of this French studio!

I think one of the biggest tragedies of Laios & Falin and their relationship is how much his actions impact her life. But like. Specifically how much they WOULDN’T impact her life as much if they weren’t both stuck in such a shitty abusive situation.

This part of the Falin-tries-makeup daydream hour comic is what got me thinking about it again because truly it just... it seems like such a like an offhand comment that I'm sure Laios didn't mean to be cruel or anything. That's just like. A little kid not thinking about what they are saying. ESPECIALLY when the kid in question is Laios.

But man they depended on each other SO much as kids. Too much. It really feels like they didn't have any other source of positive reinforcement, or anyone else to share themselves with. So of course an offhand comment like that has a huge impact on Falin.

Or this little bit from one of the flashbacks:

This tears me apart. Do you think it tears him apart to think about? I think it does. I think Laios holds every small failure to care for Falin against himself.

And then there's the Bigger stuff. The way that him coping with his own trauma ended up impacting her.

Like his interest in monsters. Like him going to find a ghost, and accidentally revealing Falin's magic to the whole village in the process.

Like him needing to leave. And leaving her behind.

He shaped her life so much, and he carries so much guilt for it. And again, there should have been other people there to help. The same things that made Laios need to leave home are the things that made his leaving so hard on Falin. She ate alone after that. She shouldn't have had to eat alone just because Laios wasn't there.

She was 9 when he left for school, and he was 11.

Nine. And Laios feels like he failed her because he didn't stand by her through this better. As an eleven year old.

Both of these kids deserved so much better from the world.

Something I love about confronting Cazador is how he obviously never processes that Astarion has friends until it's too late.

Petras and Dalyria must have mentioned that Astarion wasn't alone when they met him, but when you read Cazador's journal? He's 100% fixated on Astarion. How Astarion stood in the sun, how Astarion was willing and able to disobey him. And when Astarion shows up, Cazador barely acknowledges the party at all - and sure, that's partly because this is Astarion's moment in the narrative, but Cazador doesn't so much as ask why these random strangers are there! They're not part of his plans, so they don't exist.

And then they immediately save his errant spawn from the ritual and start beating his ass.

Just. What must have been going through Cazador's head when that fight starting turning against him? 'Is that... the Blade of Frontiers? Why is a monster hunter - and is that a cleric? - helping a vampire spawn? An undead? Ah, but they must be treating it as a necessary evil to have a chance to slay me, of course - hold on, why is the cleric healing Astarion? Why does that wizard keep Counterspelling everything I'm casting at Astarion, why waste the spells when I'm not even targeting him? Did... did that druid just cast Daylight on Astarion's weapons? And that brute of a tiefling - that's not just disgust in her eye when she looks at me, it's fury - and she keeps putting herself in front of Astarion, why in the hells would she - she's running right at me- '

I hope that one of the last things Cazador ever knew was the choking realisation that Astarion didn't just come back strong, or free. Astarion came back loved.
