who has the biggest base on empires smp? (as of july 1st, 2021)

a somewhat in-depth mathematical deep dive into empire smp’s bases

THE CONTEXT.

for the past two weeks or so, scott (also known as: scott smajor, smajor, smajor1995, dangthatsalongname, and branding nightmare) has been building up his second base, effectively taking down his starter house.

most of this building occured during his streams, where he often proclaimed that he thought he was building the “biggest base on the server.” when his third empires smp video came out on june 26, 2021, his titled said “The Biggest Base on the Server! - Minecraft Empires SMP - Ep.03.”

however, the day after, joel (aka smallishbeans) uploaded his fourth episode of empires smp, titled “Building My House! | Empires SMP | Ep.4 (1.17 Survival).” within this video, he claimed that he had the biggest house on the empires smp server. he even went as far as to trap an afk scott in a cage of stone, and writing out three signs asking scott to change the title of his recent video.

so, that begs the question: who has the biggest base on the empires smp out of scott and joel?

THE SEMANTICS.

now, for the purposes of today’s adventure, we’re only going to be counting the volume within the base. this does not include windows, outside accents, bridges, gardens, walls, doorways, or anything else that is not within the confines of the base itself. floors and/or divides do not count towards the total, as they take up space and are not “easily moved.”

the only exception is balconies--the space on a balcony counts towards the total, though that space is counted differently. on enclosed balcony, i.e. a balcony that is surrounded by fences and has a roof-like structure that blocks out rain, all the space that fits between the fences, the roof, and the floor count.

on an open balcony, i.e. a balcony that only has fences and a floor, with no roof, only the two blocks of air on top of the floor and in between the fences count.

similarly, both of their bases are defined by their respective houses that they built during the episode. their farms, tents, bridges, and any other structure that they have built previous do not count towards the total.

i will be only using screenshots from their own videos, e.g., i will use scott’s video (published june 26, 2021) to find the volume of his base, and use joel’s video (published june 27, 2021) to find the volume of his base. anything that scott has added between his video and joel’s will not be counted, neither will anything that either of them created after the fact.

i will not be counting joel’s most recent video, titled “Pranking Lizzie, Interiors & Windmills! | Empires SMP | Ep.5 (1.17 Survival)”, because that was uploaded when i was writing this analysis. like, after i finished all my counting, but when i was writing this post. so, uh-

also, i am not counting anyone else’s bases within this experiment, though i do believe others have similarly sized bases. the other creators not a part of this post until they officially get involved in the ‘rivalry’

THE METHOD.

first of all, volume is calculated in minecraft blocks cubed. a typical ‘minecraft block’ is just a full block, like planks, logs, or stone. i’m not going to calculate this accurately (i.e. counting the space that the glass panes leave behind), mostly because i cannot be assed.

SMAJOR’S BASE.

the volume of smajor’s house, in theory, is relatively easy to find. because his house is just a right pentagonal prism, we can use the formula B*h to find the volume. B is the area of the ‘base’ (which, in this case, is the front/back of his house), and h is the depth of his house.

there are two parts that add up to B: the rectangular bit, and the roof. in these two screenshots, i’m finding the area of the rectangular bit.

the second part is the roof. the roof goes outwards for two blocks, and then goes back inwards. using this reference for the roof, the previous two screenshots for the bit underneath, and cross referencing them to find out where they meet, i created a to-scale model of it!

i found the area of the to-scale model, and B = 254 mb^2

next, i used this screenshot to find the h of scott’s base! this was a bit harder because scott doesn’t show the bottom of his base until he’s already detailed it, but with the precise use of my Big Brain (and my wacom tablet), i counted that it was 24 pixels deep.

so, B * h = V = 254 * 24 = 6096 mc^3

but we AREN’T DONE YET

see, scot also has two main doorways: one at the entrance and one on the right side. i used the first screenshot to find the volume of the side doorway, and the next two screenshots to find the volume of the front doorway.

(this is the part where i might be wrong--i couldn’t find a reliable reference for the the front doorway, so i had to use an extremely zoomed out version. the stripped spruce log section underneath the window is either 2 or 3 blocks tall. i assumed 3 based on the bottom most screenshot but like. i could be wrong)

anyway, the first doorway is 18 mb^3, and the second is 39 mc^3. so, the total final volume for scott’s base is 6039 mb^3.

JOEL’S BASE.

joel’s base, on the other hand, is genuinely fucking insane. like, seriously. what the fuck, joel. you couldn’t have made it harder for me to do my job (it does look amazing though and i love it so much)

so, instead of taking screenshots and calculating the volume of his base through those references, i decided to build a replica of joel’s base in my own creative world, and after fill it with sand. i could then count all the sand from his base and add it up to achieve a (somewhat accurate) volume for his base

anyway, most of his base is relatively easy to copy. my replica is pictured above. there are two time lapses within his video that show his process of building his base. the first timelapse (4:59-5:54) is shot from the front of his base, and angled slightly downwards, and is where i got most of my references from. the second timelapse (9:48-9:55) is shot from the diagonally back left of his base, and is what i referenced for the back of my replica.

the roofs themselves are symmetrical: barring the roofs’ intersection, the blue and red roofs are the same the entire way around. this is why, even though i technically didn’t see the back of joel’s base, i knew what it looked like and could get an accurate replica of it.

the only problem is that he never showcases the base from the left. this means that the red and blue roof intersection on the left could be very wrong. the only reference i got for this part was a screenshot at 6:12 (pictured below). this only showcases the inside of the roof, and from bad lighting, but it’s better than nothing.

other than that, though, i’m. pretty sure my replica is accurate!

next, i filled his entire base with sand. this was the most tedious part--never have i ever placed so much goddamn sand in minecraft. do not recommend, 0/10

i made sure that i filled the entire base by going into spectator mode! (i can’t fit the pics in here because, well, image limit. but i promise the entire build is full)

and, after 2 diamond shovels, two stacks of torches, a handful of night vision potions, here is how much sand i have:

THE CONCLUSION + TL;DR.

scott smajor’s title was not a lie, or at least not at the time. he had the biggest base on the server as of that upload. but soon after, joel created a base that was nearly two times scott’s, creating the bigger base out of the two of them.

so, yeah! joel has a bigger base than scott as of july 1st, 2021

this is because 11,712 mb^3 > 6039 mb^3

A3! Flower Meanings: Natsugumi

Hello Everyone! Here is part 2 of this A3! Flower meaning series.

Part 1: Harugumi

Natsugumi’s flowers were a bit harder to write about since Muku’s flower had two different types of bellflowers tied to it, and Kazunari’s flower had a bunch of weird kanji that I wasn’t sure how to gracefully (?) translate (since the literal translation sounded a bit weird... 🙃)

Warning: Long Post Ahead!

1. Tenma - Sunflower

Sunflowers are a happy spring/summer flower!

Sunflowers represent, love, worship, and saying to someone “I am only looking at you” (since sunflowers turn to face towards the sun!)

I feel like this is a pretty suitable flower for Tenma? since he is a celebrity and has a lot of fans, and wants to be a worldwide known actor.

Fun Fact - Sunflowers are the birthday flower for July 20th, aka Kumon’s birthday!

2. Yuki - Lily

Lilies have several meanings since they come in several different colors!

I went through his cards and it seems white lilies are his official flower, but i’m going to throw in red and pink as well since they also pop every now and then.

Lilies general meaning: Purity, dignity, chastity. White lilies represent dignity and chastity. Red and pink lilies both represent vanity.

Lilies are a very iconic summer flower which is why I think Yuki got assigned this flower, but I feel like this fits him a bit? Since Yuki dresses differently from his peers I would say he has a lot of dignity since he always stays true to himself, and the vanity could play in with how he cares a lot about his clothes, appearance, and the costumes he makes.

3. Muku- Chinese Bellflower (?)

Muku’s flower is listed as “Chinese bellflower” but I couldn’t find anything for that specific flower name??? Of what I have researched, bellflowers are native to Asia which is why here in America they are called “Chinese bellflowers”, but I guess in Asia they are just “Bellflowers”?...

But then one of Muku’s cards had “桔梗” in it as his flower, which seems to be called then “balloon flower” here in America and not really the “Chinese Bellflower”????

Since I am kinda confused what version of the flower Liber is trying to associate with Muku, I will be including the definitions for both types of bellflowers just to be safe.

Definition 1. The “Kikyo” bellflower (桔梗)

This was the flower kanji I found this in his premonition of blooming card so I am going to assume this is the flower they want to associate for him?... This flower also is noted to have both purple and white color variations and Muku is holding purple and white flowers in his card. This flower is a type of bellflower, but seems to be more commonly listed as the “balloon flower”?

In both Japanese and Western flower language this flower represents honesty and eternal love. Japanese flower language also adds in the additional meanings of “neatness” and “obedience”

Coincidentally, this flower and morning glories (Kumon’s flower) seem to be related/variations of each other! (Just like how Muku and Kumon are cousins! Idk if this was intentional by Liber but I thought this was such a cute touch 😭💕)

Definition 1. General (?) bellflower - (ベルフラワー)

Bellflowers represent honesty, gratitude, and when given as a present saying “thank you”. It can also mean “lighthearted/fun conversation” which came from the fact that the flowers face each other when blooming (?...)

4. Misumi - Dahlia

(Fun fact: I have been playing A3! for over 456 days and I still have yet to unlock this misumi card 😭 Misumi never wants to come home.)

Dahlia’s have a lot of definitions! They mean both “brilliant and elegant” but also “constantly moving and unstable”.

In my personal opinion I feel like dahlia’s don’t really suit him? I really think they could have picked a better flower for him...

I guess I could see how they reference his personality though? On stage he is a very brilliant and talented actor, and off stage I feel like the constantly moving and unstable part could be referencing his personality and how he is always looking for triangles and parkour-ing everywhere? So it ties in to both sides of his personality.

Fun fact: Dahlia is the birthday flower for June 5th and Misumi’s birthday is June 6th. Kind of a funny coincidence 🙃

5. Kazunari - Hibiscus

This flower had a lot of weird kanji for its definitions, so I tried my best to make sense of it 🙃

The general meaning of hibiscus is new love and delicate beauty.

Red hibiscus, which is what Kazu is usually seen with represents bravery and another word that I am interpreting as “everyday/endless new beauty” (常に新しい美. 🙃) . White hibiscus i am interpreting to mean shining beauty? (it gave me 艶美, 艶 = glossy?? /美 = beauty.)

If there are any translators or people who know Japanese reading this and have a better translation for these kanji please feel free to leave a comment. I am kind of stumped with how to translate this... 🙃

Hibiscus is another iconic summer flower which is probably why Liber wanted at least one of the summer troupe members to have this, but I feel like this suits Kazu really well!!!! Kazu wants to be a master of many different art forms/things and is always willing to start something new, so I think the “new love” and “endless new beauty” tie into this!

6. Kumon - Morning Glory

Morning glories stand for Ephemeral/fleeting love, Love in general, and when given to someone it represents having a tight-bond!

I feel like the definition for this flower kinda contradicts itself since it represents a short-lived love but also having a close bond 😅

None the less, I feel like the “tight-bond” aspect of it fits him since he is close with both his family (Juza and Muku) and his troupe mates!

As a said before, it seems morning glories and bellflowers (Muku’s flower) are related to each other! Just like how both of them are related.

Fun Fact: morning glories is one of the birthday flowers for August 1st, which is Kazunari’s birthday! (Usually a birthday will have 2-3 flowers associated with it.)

(Echee post) Did Emma Watson actually graduate from Brown University? Special treatment at college?

*PS this is a work in progress, will take a few days to get it in order...so apologies if it is incomplete Intro Emma has been talking about how important education is to her since she was 10. Even during the first interviews for Harry Potter promotion, back in 2001 for Philosopher's Stone, she was adamant about going to college. She's continuously said how important college/education is throughout the Harry Potter promotion years, but does what she say match up with what she actually did? She was playing along with that bullshit "Classy, educated" image she and her PR team (like her publicist Luke) have crafted for her, the one where she claims she is exactly the same as Hermione, the beloved character from the Harry Potter franchise. Course though, she's contradicted herself on that multiple, multiple times - sometimes saying she's exactly like Hermione, and other times claiming they're extremely different. There was some extremely strange stuff going down with Emma's Brown University Education though....as will be revealed below. And you'll have to start wondering if she actually did graduate or how much, how extensive and enormous, was the amount of special, unequal treatment she got for being a celebrity and a feminist (College campuses love pandering to social justice warriors/feminists - part of it is a natural love for them and another part is Obama forcing them to through the OCR and Title IX) Emma's Education Emma entered Brown University the Fall of 2009. Brown is a private, 4 year university/college in America. Emma entered Brown as an international student studying on an F-1 Visa. Okay Emma didn't do much BS during her first 3 semester (Fall 2009, Spring 2010, Fall 2010) at Brown and seemed to study there like most normal students, but it's after the first three semesters that things started getting extremely strange and Emma started telling a whole bunch of lies. Emma constantly raved about how awesome college is and gave every single impression she was going back to Brown in Spring 2011. getSurrey November 2010: getSurrey: Will you carry on acting? Emma: I will keep on acting. I’ve just been in a film called My Week With Marilyn. I’ve just finished shooting that. But finishing university is a priority. But I hope I do lots more things. I don’t really want to be put in a box – just yet. I’m not exactly sure. University Magazine Interview by Colin Turner (November 2010?): (Okay just note that this interview came out in June/July 2011 for Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 2 Promotion, but Emma mentions in the interview she just finished filming My Week with Marilyn, which happened in November 2010. Uni magazine is this student run magazine, so I'm assuming they don't do monthly issues (don't have the money/people for that) so it takes them several months to release an issue.) Colin Turner: You’ve gone to university, obviously, do you imagine taking up acting in the future or are you just seeing what happens? Emma: I just did a movie, finished something last week, “My week with Marilyn”, which is exciting. No, I think I’ll just keep doing things. But my education is my number one priority at the moment and everything else comes around that really. Parade Magazine Interview November 2010 (Emma Watson's Campus Confidential, interviewed by Jeanne Wolf): "I get some amazing offers to act, and sometimes it’s hard to say, “No, I’m going to stay here and do my homework.” People are like, “What do you mean she’s not available?” I may do some theater next summer, but this college experience is really important to me, and I won’t give it up for anything. I’m not going to school just for the academics–I wanted to share ideas, to be around people who are passionate about learning."

Echee says: Okay, notice how in November 2010 and even right up until January 17, Emma claims/gives the strong impression she's definitely going back to Brown University for the Spring 2011 semester. Big lol at the "this college experience is really important to me, and I won’t give it up for anything" two months before she did. By the way I have to mention the whole "Sorry for long absence from here - so much to do and so little time to do it in before I go back to school! Hope you're all ok x" was originally a tweet from Emma's @EmWatson twitter account but after she left university she deleted it lol. The picture I posted is from the official (that's why there's the blue check mark) Emma Watson Facebook page run by both Emma and her team. I guess she forgot to delete the facebook post after she deleted her tweet. For Spring 2011, the first day of classes was January 26 (per the academic calendar). Yet even at January 17, Emma stated she was getting ready to go back to school, hence her "so little time to do it in before I go back to school!" How the fuck can she be confused 1 week before classes start whether she's taking a personal leave of absence or not? Brown University Personal Leave of Absence Deadline

Brown University 3 types of leaves of absence

Okay, so of Brown University's three types of leaves of absence, Emma took personal. The deadline to declare you're taking next semester off is December 1, hence the Brown policy "If you are planning to take leave for the spring semester (Semester 2), you must declare by Dec. 1st." Either Emma was lying and trying to delay revealing she was taking time off to do her Perks of Being a Wallflower filming and BS Lancôme makeup and perfume work (very possible since she lies so much), or she was honestly undecided until right before, and thus requested special, unequal treatment that despite her missing the deadline, she should be allowed to take a leave of absence. Anyway I think it was special treatment from Brown allowing their publicity cow to get what she wanted. That means she was clearly lying in her January 17 tweet about going back to school.

This from Amanda Foreman, Emma's interviewer, for Emma's Vogue Magazine July 2011 interview: Emma struggled valiantly to fit everything into her life, becoming increasingly exhausted, until over Christmas advisors at Brown suggested that she take a leave of absence, a turn of events Yates was not surprised by. Notice how the Vogue article says it was "over Christmas"....Christmas Break for Brown starts after December 1, the deadline. First off, unless Emma's doctor signed off on it, then it was NOT a medical leave of absence, and her advisors gave her special treatment since she missed the personal leave of absence deadline already. And You know December 25 is over 3 weeks after the December 1st deadline, so that's an amazingly long extension despite the severe, absolute terms of "You must declare by December 1". Anyway, wowza, off to a bad start....getting special treatment when you're quitting school temporarily. Well, whatever, it's equality feminist Emma Watson that we are talking about here. She runs her mouth off talking about feminism and equality and whatever but like most Western (usually Caucasian) privileged feminists, have no idea what she's talking about. Despite Brown's Spring 2011 semester starting at the end of January, Emma kept quiet about all this until March 7, 2011. She announced it on her website EmmaWatson.com (which is now defunct and shut down): Here's her statement on March 7, 2011: As you know, I love Brown and I love studying pretty much more than anything. But recently I've had so much to juggle that being a student AND fulfilling my other commitments has become a little impossible. I've decided to take a bit of time off to completely finish my work on Harry Potter (the last one comes out this summer) and to focus on my other professional and acting projects. I will still be working towards my degree … it's just going to take me a semester or two longer than I thought : ) Hope you are all well! Thank you for all your continuing support. Emma xx.

On February 10, 2011 (well after the Brown semester had started), Emma confirms on twitter that she will be filming Perks of Being a Wallflower, which interfered with Brown (Brown school date ends May 20, Perks started filming May 9) and she had also already had various talks and was close to finalizing a deal with Lancôme. And she knew she would have to do some filming work for Lancôme commercials in the coming months. At this point clearly she was taking the semester off and yet she didn't announce it until March 7, 2011. Why'd she wait an entire month??? Why be so secretive of it? Just like how a week before classes started she was claiming she was getting ready to go back to school. And then why wait another month before she and Harry Potter publicist Vanessa Davies, release more details of this leave of absence? April 23, 2011 Press Release to Associated Press: LONDON (AP) — A spokeswoman for Harry Potter star Emma Watson says she will be transferring from Brown University to another university in the autumn. Vanessa Davies denied reports that the 21-year-old actress was "bullied out" of the Rhode Island university, saying there was no truth in reports by a number of online publications who cited classmates and "insiders". Davies said Saturday that Watson, who plays Hermione in the wizard movie series, has decided to pursue a different course not offered at Brown. She added that the star "has absolutely loved her time at Brown" and made many good friends there. Watson has recently taken time out of her studies to focus on her movie career. She has said that her first days in college were difficult. Davies did not identify the university Watson will be transferring to. Emma releases a statement April 30, 2011 on her website EmmaWatson.com (now defunct): I felt the need to let you all know the reason I took a semester off from Brown had nothing to do with bullying as the media have been suggesting recently. I have never been bullied in my life and certainly never at Brown. This "10 points to Gryffindor" incident never even happened. I feel the need to say this because accusing Brown students of something as serious as bullying and this causing me to leave seems beyond unfair. Please don't try and speculate about what I might do in September - no one can possibly know because I don't even know yet! Like my other fellow Brown students I am trying to figure out my third year and whether or not I will spend it abroad (this is common).

If you wondered why Emma let Vanessa Davies announce the transferring information, instead of Emma just announcing it on her website a week later, it's because Davies is head of publicity at Harry Potter, so they were working out how best to frame the narrative that Emma is still a hardworking student. Don't forget, ~200 million is spent on Harry Potter marketing for HP Deathly Hallows and Davies is part of that team and one of the heads. Warner Brothers had to protect their little cash cow until the movies were over and Emma couldn't damage their profits. Also, the Harry Potter spokesperson, Vanessa Davies, says Emma will be "transferring" but from Emma's own message (and it's later revealed), she was actually only just studying abroad, not transferring. Weird. April 2011 Associated Press Interview: I just knew I was going to be beating myself up because I wasn't going to be able to be doing the best that I knew that I could at school or in my job. If I'd been getting B's or C's I would've been really upset. Wonderland Magazine February 2014: You realize you can't do everything. I really did think I could do it all - commute back to the UK for Potter filming and press, then go to Brown for finals, and keep up with my friends and family. You can't do it by the way. You do have to take breaks. It's how I became interested in meditation and yoga. I developed bedtime rituals. Elle Magazine UK November 2011: Of course Harry Potter got in the way, with its relentless round of reshoots and promotion, meaning that Emma had to temporarily halt her studies at the start of this year. "I was basically commuting across the Atlantic. Taking a semester out wasn't what I wanted to do, but I am still enrolled at Brown." Notice how in Wonderland Emma claims she was busy filming for Harry Potter and her Elle Magazine interviewer claims the same. Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2 filming ended in June 2010, and then for less than a week they had to reshoot the epilogue in December 2010 (they reshot around Christmas time, so Emma had already finished her Brown Semester). They re-shot the epilogue because the makeup/CGI made the actors look elderly instead of middle aged. Also, HP and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiere was July 15, 2011. Generally press begins one month in advance (though you might do some magazine interviews 3-4 months in advance). Emma was not seen at any events/doing press until beginning of July 2011. She was stuck in Pittsburgh doing Perks of Being a Wallflower filming (which took place from May 9 to June 29, 2011) Emma was also filming for and doing work on her Lancôme stuff in March/April. How can she claim she was too busy during the Spring 2011 school year (which was from January 26 - May 20) with Potter filming and promotion? She did none of that. The overlap she had with school and non-school stuff was Perks filming and Lancôme filming/promotion. It had NOTHING to do with taking time off for Potter. Plus she was negotiating those deals for Perks in January 2011 and for Lancôme in December-ish. There was ZERO reason for her to take time off from school, but she did, because she was desperate for fame/money, and she blamed it on Potter to hide the truth. So jealous that you get to play Sam. If I was ever going to be in a movie, if I was ever going to play any character ever, it would be Sam. Notice how Emma mentions going back to Brown and asking her Brown roommates (Scout Willis, Madison Utendahl, etc.) about the book. So even during the Fall 2010 Semester, she was secretly thinking of filming Perks next year. And remember the interviews I posted above (from November 2010) where she claimed education and university came first? BS. She was already planning back in September 2010 (when she went back to Brown) about leaving next year. Also, remember this. Emma is claiming she was overworked with Brown and Potter stuff.....why in September 2010 was she looking at possible filming projects that would coincide with Spring 2011 Semester and Summer? If you claim you are overworked, why are you looking to add on more, extra, unnecessary work. She was also negotiating her Lancôme deal in December 2010 as well. Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 2 New York City Press Conference July 2011 (Listen at 17:30): "I'm going to Oxford, in the fall, to study English for a year. Just to explain, I haven't left Brown. I'm still enrolled at Brown, but I'm doing my third year abroad. Studying at home, abroad, for me. So I'll go back to the States to do my last year. I took a semester off but my A-Level credits actually count as an advance-place-me-out-a-semester so I'm no further behind, I'm still technically going into my third year. So, yeah, that's that." Something to remember is how Vanessa Davies (when the Harry Potter spokeswoman announced Emma was transferring from Brown in April)says "Watson, who plays Hermione in the wizard movie series, has decided to pursue a different course not offered at Brown". On Emma's EmmaWatson.com website in the FAQ section (undated), she says this: I was seriously torn as to whether to stay in the UK or go to the States as let's face it the UK has some of the best universities in the world. But, ultimately, I loved the course at Brown and really liked the idea of experiencing a different country and culture - and I must say I've never been happier, I absolutely love Brown. So strange how Emma + her Harry Potter spokesperson contradict each other. Emma claims she purposefully chose Brown (instead of staying in the UK for university) because she loved Brown's course, but then the spokesperson said the reason Emma is transferring is because Emma was sad that Brown didn't have the course she wanted to take. Emma reveals in the press conference that she will be studying English a Oxford. The thing is, Emma was and did graduate as an English Literature major. So Brown did have the course she wanted to take (which is what she earlier said). Okay so Watson claims here that despite taking an entire semester (3-5 classes) off, she's no further behind than the rest of her classmates. Damn, this girl must be such a hard worker to not fall behind. Still, is she telling the truth, lying as usual, or begging/threatening Brown University to give her special, unequal treatment? Anyway, there's a lot of information and I only parsed out a bit of it, but here's a quick summary. Basically, to graduate from Brown University, you need to take a minimum of 30 classes during your college years (can be at Brown or other approved colleges) and also a minimum of 8 semesters. Just to mention, A-Levels are the UK equivalent of American Advanced Placement (A.P.) courses or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. Also, when Brown says "credits" they mean courses/classes. So, yes, Emma told the truth in that her semester standing is no further behind because her A-Levels counted as an extra semester. However! Emma is still behind in total number of classes taken because A-Levels do not count towards your degree requirement of 30 classes/courses. So she needs to take more classes per semester than the average person since she's behind.

Vanity Fair May 2010 Interview: After shopping classes, she settled on European women's history, Ovid's Metamorphoses, and acting. “I think actually I'm the worst person in the class,” says Watson cheerily. So in Emma's first semester (that's the time period they're talking about), Emma took 3 classes - women's history (lol at this feminist class), Ovid, and acting. Brown requires students to take 3-5 classes a semester and so Emma took the bare minimum....kind of super lazy for someone so excited to get to college and start learning and whatever else she's been spouting for years. Okay, Brown's most basic, elementary requirement that ALL students have to fulfill to graduate is to take 30 classes. Since Emma only took 3 classes her first semester, that means 30 - 3 = 27 classes left to take over 7 semesters. Since Emma took a semester off but claims advanced standing, meaning she wants to graduate in May 2013 (September 2009 - May 2013), that means...... 27 classes over 6 total semesters. 27 / 6 = 4.5 classes per semester This I will go into detail in below, later, but just a heads up, Emma also took the Fall 2012 Semester off in order to film Noah. Because Emma had enough A-Levels, she did indeed get 2 semesters of advanced standing, but to graduate in 6 semesters means...... 30 minimum classes to graduate / 6 semesters = 5 classes a semester every semester Brown only allows you to take a max of 5 classes a semester and since Emma only took 3 classes her very first semester at Brown, it means it's impossible for Emma to graduate by May 2013 without special, unequal treatment....special treatment being either lowering the required 30 classes or allowing her to take 6 classes a semester, but come on, Emma is super lazy and unprofessional. Can you honestly see this girl doing 6 classes a semester when she lazily only took 3 classes her first semester? Freshman year is the easiest you know.... And their 30 classes requirement is their most basic requirement - to let her worm her way out of it would be absolutely disgusting.

Byron Wagner’s Route Episode 03 Part 01/05

Byron: “What is it...?”

I presented a chic dark blue vial in front of Byron-san.

Byron: “Is that perfume?”

MC: “Yes. It's from the commercial you shot the other day.”

MC: “It seems that they are distributing it to the people who come to the new perfume presentation that Byron-san will be attending next time.”

MC: “The company sent it to the office as a thank you in advance for your appearance.”

Byron: “...I see.”

(Actually, I should have given it to Byron-san when he came to the office earlier...)

(But I just wanted an excuse for us to meet alone.)

MC: “If you would like, please, have it.”

Byron: “No…”

Byron-san shook his head slightly.

Byron: “It doesn't make sense for me to have the perfume.”

MC: “What do you mean...?”

Byron: “Isn’t it supposed to be a ‘scent that attracts the man you love’?”

Byron: “You should have it.”

(I mean... It is a perfume for women to attract men, but I wonder if I should really accept his words.)

MC: “...Then, I’ll keep it. Thank you.”

Byron: “You’re welcome. But…”

Byron: “I want you to wear this perfume only in front of me.” *Top Left Picture*

MC: “...”

As Byron-san gently smiled, my heart began beating fast in my chest.

(I wish I could really attract Byron-san with this perfume…)

As I thought that, Byron-san picked up the perfume bottle.

MC: “Byron-san…?”

Byron: “Sorry, may I put it on you?” *Top Right Picture*

He opened the lid of the bottle and the calm sweet scent tickled my nose.

Byron: “MC, hands.”

MC: “...Please.”

As I extended my right hand out to him, Byron-san sprinkled the perfume on my wrists.

A soft and elegant fragrance surrounded me.

(It’s a very nice scent…)

Byron: “...I understand what they mean now.”

Byron Wagner’s Route Episode 03 Part 02/05

Byron: “...I understand what they mean now.”

MC: “...?”

When I tilted my head to Byron-san’s mumble, my hand was gently lifted.

Byron: “It’s definitely an attractive scent.”

Byron: “But I feel more attracted to you than the perfume’s scent.” *1st Middle Left Picture*

MC: “...”

He kissed the inside of my wrist and my body got hot all at once.

MC: “Byron-san…do you like this scent?”

Byron: “Yes.”

(If that’s what Byron-san says…)

MC: “In that case, I will always wear it when we see each other.”

As I said that, Byron-san suddenly smiled.

Byron: “Then I’ll have to be careful.”

MC: “Huh…?”

Byron: “I don’t want to let myself lose control and cause us a scandal.” *1st Middle Right Picture*

Byron-san hugged my waist, smiling with mischief in his eyes.

MC: “...”

When I placed my hands on his chest to steady myself and raised my head, our eyes met.

Byron: “...MC.”

(Ah…)

As I closed my eyes with sweet premonition, I heard a knock.

(...Someone is here.)

Byron: “...We will continue this next time.”

MC: “Y-yes.”

Right when he released my body, a member of the staff for the program entered the dressing room.

Crew Member: “Excuse me, is it okay for you to come on set now?”

Byron: “Yes, I’ll head there right away.”

(I’ll go back to the office so I do not disturb him anymore.)

MC: “Byron-san, I'm going back to the office. Please do your best today.”

Byron: “Yes. You too.”

MC left the dressing room.

When Byron looked at the table, he noticed that she left her cell phone behind.

Byron: “Is this…”

MC left the dressing room.

When Byron looked at the table, he noticed that she left her cell phone behind.

Byron: “Is this…MC’s?”

—...That night.

(Where did I put my phone?)

My shoulders slumped over when I discovered that my cell phone had somehow disappeared, and I walked home without it...

Byron: “—MC.”

MC: “Huh?”

Byron-san was waiting in front of my house.

(Why is he here…?)

Byron: “I’m sorry for being unable to come to you sooner.”

MC: “That’s fine, but…what happened?”

Byron: “I had come here so I could give this back to you.” *2nd Middle Left Picture*

When Byron-san pulled out my phone from his pocket, my breath stopped.

MC: “You have it…!”

MC: “I was so afraid that I had lost it.”

MC: “Thank you for giving it back to me.”

Byron: “You’re welcome.”

(I must have forgotten it back in the dressing room, and Byron-san found it so he came to return it.)

(It’s kind of him to come all this way to give it to me...)

When I took my cell phone, something cold touched my cheek.

MC: “Huh… it’s raining?”

Byron: “That’s right, I heard it was supposed to rain tonight.” *2nd Middle Right Picture*

(Right now, the sky is still clear and it’s only drizzling…)

But I saw thick clouds approaching from the distance, and I knew it was only time before it started to pour.

MC: “Byron-san, you didn’t come here with a car, right?”

Byron: “Yes. My house isn’t far away, though.”

(Although he lives close by, he shouldn’t have to go back like this.)

MC: “Ah… if you don’t mind, how about you come inside for a bit?”

Byron Wagner’s Route Episode 03 Part 04/05

MC: “Ah… if you don’t mind, how about you come inside for a bit?”

Byron: “Is that okay with you?”

MC: “Of course. I will give you my umbrella.” *3rd Middle Left Picture*

MC: “Please go inside before the rain gets heavy.”

Byron: “Sorry for the trouble.”

I started walking toward my house with Byron-san.

At that moment, I thought I heard a mechanical noise from a distance.

(...Huh? Just now…)

Byron-san tilted his head at me when I stopped walking and looked back.

Byron: “What’s wrong?”

MC: “It’s nothing…”

(Was it just my imagination...?)

I squinted my eyes, but I couldn't see anything there.

—...Next afternoon.

MC: “Excuse me.”

When I headed to the conference room after being called down by the president,

Byron-san was also there.

MC: “Huh, Byron-san was called down, too?”

Byron: “Yes, it appears we were both wanted.”

MC: “Both wanted…?”

President: “MC-kun, look at this.” (TN: Young women are sometimes called “-kun” by their superiors in a business setting, even though it’s usually used for males.)

I took the weekly magazine offered by the president and looked down on the cover.

I followed the characters with my eyes, my eyes widening.

MC: “...! Th-this…”

(A report about Byron-san’s passionate lover…!?)

Looking at the cover, there was a clear photo of me and Byron-san entering my house.

(This photo was from yesterday, right?)

(The sound I had heard back then must have been the sound of a camera...)

Reporters had recently been spying on Byron-san to get a scoop on him.

(I had even been aware of that…)

(I messed up by inviting him over…)

President: “I called you guys down here to confirm the truth.”

Byron: “Are you asking if MC and I…are in love?” *3rd Middle Right Picture*

Byron Wagner Episode 03 Part 05/05

Byron: “Are you asking if MC and I…are in love?”

President: “That’s correct.”

Byron-san raised his head as if he hadn’t done anything wrong.

Byron: “We are not in love.” *Bottom Left Picture*

Byron: “Yesterday I just visited her house to return something MC had forgotten.”

President: “Is that all?”

He directed his quiet gaze at me, trying to see if there was any truth to what Byron-san had claimed.

(It wasn’t a total lie.)

MC: “Yes, I lost my phone yesterday...”

MC: “Byron-san brought it to me in person because we couldn't get in touch otherwise.”

President: “Then that means this report is a false alarm?”

As the two of us remained firm in our claims, the president exhaled as if he were relieved.

President: “Still, no matter what the circumstances were, this report has caused us a lot of trouble.”

President: “It's not only weekly magazines, morning news shows are also talking about the report.”

(...I was so busy this morning that I didn't have time to watch any TV, but I know he must be right.)

Byron: “It’s because of my careless behavior. I’ll take responsibility.”

MC: “...No, Byron-san did nothing wrong. I am the one who should be held accountable...”

President: “Who is and isn’t responsible doesn’t matter now. Is there any plan at all to manage the situation?”

(Manage the situation… If that’s all...)

MC: “Ah, we can do something at the upcoming new perfume presentation.”

MC: “How about denying the claims officially to the press?”

President: “You’re right. That will be a good time to do it.”

Byron: “Yes. I'm sure they will be asking questions about this as soon as they see me.”

MC: “Yes. The photos taken by the weekly magazine don’t mean we are in love...”

MC: “If we deny it publicly, the rumors will go away.”

President: “Okay, I ask you to settle this at that time.”

Byron: “Alright.”

That was all the president had left to say, and he walked out of the conference room like nothing happened.

Now alone with Byron-san, silence fell.

MC: “Oh, Byron-san…”

miss A (미쓰에이) - Good-bye Baby

This week’s recommendation is Good-bye Baby by miss A!

Good-bye Baby is a song by miss A, released July 18th 2011. It is the lead single on their debut studio album A Class, released the same day, and was produced by Park Jinyoung (or as he’s credited on the album, J.Y. Park “TheAsiansoul”).

The producer behind this song uploaded a video of himself recording the song with Manny Marroquin, a Grammy-winning mixing engineer who has worked alongside powerhouses like Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Kanye West and Bruno Mars.

Good-bye Baby is a dance-pop, pop song which details how a girl has confidently dumped her ‘playboy’ boyfriend who likes to cheat. The lyrics in the first verse reference one of the members, reading: “I figured it out when you called me Suzy by accident, when my name isn’t Suzy. I don’t know why I tried so hard to trust you (I knew what kind of guy you were). Don’t cry in vain. (I took out all of your things). The acting stops now.” and this garnered a lot of attention for their impactful statement, despite their playful nature.

The song is described as having a strong hip-hop rhythm, with acoustic shuffle elements.

This song peaked at number 1 on the Gaon Digital Chart in 2011.

A Class was miss A’s debut studio album, released July 18th 2011. It featured six singles, one being the award winning Bad Girl, Good Girl.

There’s quite a bit of background this album, so bear with me for a second. July 1 2010, miss A released a four-song EP Bad But Good, which included Love Again (다시 사랑) and Bad Girl Good Girl, which were their first and second singles, released June 30th and July 1st respectively. These two tracks, plus their album track Break It were later included on A Class.

Their second four-song EP Step Up was released 27th September 2010 and its song Breathe was used as the promotional single. All other tracks were later included on A Class.

The lead single for A Class was Good-bye Baby, but their next single from this album Love Alone was specially created for Kim Yuna’s Ice Show; she is South Korea’s figure skating champion. The group performed the song as special guests on her show as Yuna and other figure skaters danced to the song. This song was also their first song sung in English, and was released May 2011.

A Class reached number 9 on the Gaon Weekly Album Chart, but finished at number 5 for the month, and 44 for the year of 2011. Their other single, Love Alone, reached number 6 on Gaon’s Digital Charts.

miss A was a South Korean-Chinese girl group under JYP Entertainment. They debuted in 2010 with their song Bad Girl Good Girl as a four member group, made up of Fei, Jia, Min and Suzy. Their debut song reached number 1 on the Gaon Digital Charts, making them the first to ever have a debut song reach the top of the chart. It also went on to become the best-performing single of 2010. Originally, miss A consisted of five trainees formed in 2010. Three of them appeared on Chinese variety shows performing dance routines and songs as “The Chinese Wonder Girls”, with Woo Hyerim as a member, who eventually was placed in Wonder Girls soon before miss A’s debut in order to replace Sunmi (ex-member of Wonder Girls).

March 2010, Suzy Bae (15 at the time) joined the group, which then became a trio known as miss A. They signed with the Samsung Electronics in China and released a song used for the commercial called Love Again for the Samsung Beat Fetsival. Lee Min Young, a solo artist and a long time trainee in America, made a cameo appearance in the MV. She later joined the group for their South Korean debut in April 2010.

A Class (2011) produced two more number 1 songs, and their follow-up EPs Touch and Independent Women Part III (both released 2012) proved more success. Their second studio album Hush (2013) was well-received by critics and its title track has been covered numerous times by girl groups and on survival shows.

After this, there was a year long hiatus, until they released their 3rd EP Colors (2015), which was their last release before disbandment.

In 2017, Billboard ranked miss A at number 10 on their “Top 10 K-pop Girl Groups of the Decade” list.

Jia left the group in May 2016, where management said that the group was working on individual activities and focusing on their solo careers. In November 2017, Min left the group after her contract expired with the company. Cue December 2017, where JYP officially announced that the group had disbanded.

Currently only Suzy and Fei remain in the company from miss A.

Their fandom name was Say A, but they never had an official fandom colour.

Trump began the day with a call to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Shortly after, he called American state governors. In the 55-minute call, he told them, “You have to dominate, if you don’t dominate you’re wasting your time. They’re going to run over you, you’re going to look like a bunch of jerks. You have to dominate.” He told the governors, “You’ve got to arrest people, you have to track people, you have to put them in jail for 10 years and you’ll never see this stuff again.” “You know when other country’s watch this, they’re watching this, the next day wow, they’re really a push over. And we can’t be a push over. And we have all the resources—it’s not like we don’t have the resources. So, I don’t know what you’re doing.” “It’s a movement, if you don’t put it down it will get worse and worse…. The only time its successful is when you’re weak and most of you are weak.”

He said: “We will activate Bill Barr and activate him very strongly.” He said: “Washington [D.C.] was under very good control, but we’re going to have it under much more control. We’re going to pull in thousands of people.” Barr later directed the FBI to send riot teams to Miami and Washington.

Also on the call were Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper and General Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Esper echoed Trump, telling the governors in a discussion of American protesters in American cities: “we need to dominate the battle space.”

On the call, Trump said he had put Milley in charge of managing the protests. Since by law Milley is an advisor, rather than part of the military chain of command, the Pentagon clarified that he could not lead any military response to the crisis. White House Press Secretary later said he would lead a “central command center in conjunction with the state and local governments.”

This call was recorded and leaked to the press almost immediately.

Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, a former Army captain who now sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, was on board with the sentiments in it. He called for Trump to invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act, which permits the president to override the restriction against using the military in domestic situations in extreme situations. Cotton tweeted: “Anarchy, rioting, and looting needs to end tonight. If local law enforcement is overwhelmed and needs backup, let’s see how tough these Antifa terrorists are when they’re facing off with the 101st Airborne Division. We need to have zero tolerance for this destruction…. And, if necessary, the 10th Mountain, 82nd Airborne, 1st Cav, 3rd Infantry—whatever it takes to restore order. No quarter for insurrectionists, anarchists, rioters, and looters.”

Readers pointed out that the concept of “no quarter,” that is, killing those who surrender in a battle, is a war crime. Trump tweeted that Cotton was “100% correct.” Cotton later tried to walk back the comments by resorting to a dictionary definition, but David A. French, a lawyer, military officer, Iraq veteran, and journalist, pointed out that Cotton graduated from Harvard Law School, and certainly knew that military ops defines “no quarter” very clearly, and prohibits it.

Florida Representative Matt Gaetz—the man who wore a gas mask on the floor of Congress to downplay the dangers of coronavirus—tweeted “Now that we clearly see Antifa as terrorists, can we hunt them down like we do in the Middle East?” Twitter hid the tweet—a tweet from a sitting congressman—as glorifying violence.

A reminder: we do not yet know who is behind the looting and violence, although a number of videos have shown white instigators. The political affiliation of those rioters is not clear, despite the statements of Trump and Attorney General Barr that they are “radical leftists.”

When a journalist today asked a senior White House official what Trump was doing, the official responded: “He’s not handling anything, just typing a bunch of shit on Twitter.” But things took an ominous turn later in the day.

Twenty-nine states have activated about 70,000 National Guard troops but have not deployed more than a few hundred of them, and no state governor has asked for federal intervention. Nonethless, Trump, who refused to help the states respond to the coronavirus pandemic, now wants federal troops in those same states. In the Rose Garden this afternoon, he said that if mayors and governors didn’t increase their troop presence, he would send in federal troops. He announced he was deploying “thousands and thousands of heavily armed soldiers, military personnel and law enforcement officers” to stop the protests in Washington, D.C. and “to protect the rights of law-abiding Americans, including your Second Amendment rights.”

While he was talking, a massive police presence, including officers from the Customs and Border Protection, were clearing peaceful protesters from Lafayette Square with tear gas and flash-bang explosions.

The president concluded his remarks by saying “Now, I’m going to pay my respects to a very, very special place.” He walked out of the White House to the north side of it, into Lafayette Square, where the protests have been, along with Esper, Attorney General William Barr, Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, and other White House officials, including Hope Hicks, who apparently hatched the plan to calm Trump's anger at being made fun of for his stay in the White House bunker. They crossed the park to St. John’s Episcopal Church, a historic site that had briefly been set on fire last night. There, Trump held up a Bible and said: “We have a great country, that’s my thoughts, the greatest country in the world. We will make it even greater, it won’t take long. It’s coming back strong and it will be greater than ever before.”

Democratic Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania tweeted: “I want to be super clear about what happened tonight in Washington: The President of the United States deployed tear-gas, rubber bullets and military personnel on peaceful protesters so that he could cross the street for a photo op. There is no excuse.” Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon straight up said “the fascist speech Donald Trump just delivered verged on a declaration of war against American citizens. I fear for our country tonight and will not stop defending America against Trump’s assault.”

Esquire writer Charles Pierce notes that since 9-11, the federal government has equipped local police with $4.3 billion in military gear and prepared them for an all-out war on terrorists. In 2014, President Barack Obama tried to stop the transfer of military weapons and equipment to civilian police departments with an executive order, but Trump reversed it. This militarization of the police has created in America’s streets what a government commission in 1968 defined as a “police riot,” in which officers themselves instigate, escalate, or sustain violent confrontations. In addition to attacking protesters, today’s police are singling out journalists for attack. This development is significant because it is a key sign of authoritarian regimes, which try to silence journalists to silence information about their actions.

Tonight General Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff, talked to reporters from the streets of Washington. National security specialist Tom Nichols noted: “There is absolutely no reason for the Chairman to be walking the streets right now. This is not even remotely in the tradition of U.S. civil-military relations.”

EVIDENCE AND LOGIC BEHIND THE CANON DIVERGENCES

below the cut where i explain shit that i changed or tweaked. also where i logic my way through a lot of the inconsistencies of canon since rick’s said three different years for when nico is born, etc., so i basically yeet myself into a history lesson on ww2 ( which is why there are the triggers there are listed below ) to make sense of nico’s history and timeline.

trigger warnings : fascism tw / nazis tw / nazism tw / death tw

nico’s birth year : we’re given nico’s birth year as being 1924, 1932, and 1933 in various official sources, but these would’ve ended up having nico be 19, 13, and 12 years old respectively when his mother dies in 1946 ( see below ). nico is supposed to be a really little kid when he goes into the lotus casino, but there’s other events in his life that make him HAVE to be born a certain year, etc. in order to keep as close to canon as possible, i’ve settled on 1934, since it means he’s 11 years old when his mother dies. not perfect, but having nico be born any later than that and it’s pushing at the beginning of ww2 at a close enough proximity that nico would most likely have not been a) old enough in general but also b) old enough to remember details of his life that he needs to remember / does remember in the books. not that he should be able to remember any of that shit since he got dunked in the river lethe, but i’m doing the best i can with what i’ve got here, so 1934 it is.

di angelo family’s departure from italy : ( nazism tw / facism tw ) why did the di angelo family wait to leave italy ( a warzone ) in the middle of WW2 and not when it started? the simple and shitty answer-- they didn’t feel like they had the need to. even though maria is the child of an american diplomat, hades is able to keep them safe in italy because it’s his children that are the dominant power there, so they’re ( supposedly ) safe where they are. the di angelos finally decide to leave italy when mussolini is removed from power in 1943 and an armistice is called between italy and the allied forces. i chose to have them wait this long to leave rather than following the vague af implications of canon because a) it makes more sense and b) nico has a distinct memory of his neighbor pietro, who was a veteran of mussolini’s african campaign. that campaign ended in 1943, so nico would’ve met pietro and been somewhat familiar with him and his experiences on the campaign ( which is what nico remembers about him in his conversation with reyna ) before leaving italy later that year.

pact of the big three : ( nazism tw / nazis tw ) the pact of the big three was set up after the end of WW2 in 1945. it was set in place for two reasons-- one, the oracle of delphi delivered the great prophecy stating that the next child of the big three to reach sixteen years old would either save or destroy olympus, and two, the world had jUST been nearly destroyed by demigod children already ( canon says that WW2 was the children of zeus and poseidon on the allied forces side versus hades’ children, who were nazis. yikes. ). sO zeus, poseidon, and hades all agreed to not have mortal kids ( in some parts of canon, it says ever again, in others it says the next seventy years. it should probably be noted that hades is the only one that actually upheld the pact regardless of what the rules were ). given that hades is only permitted in olympus once a year on the winter solstice, it makes sense that the date of them making the pact official would be on the day he’s allowed to be there.

maria di angelo’s death year : okay so according to maria’s wiki, she died at the beginning of WW2, which if i’m being honest isn’t possible. let me tell you why. the reason maria was killed was because zeus was attempting to kill bianca and nico. after the pact of the big three was made, zeus demanded that hades send bianca and nico ( who were already born at this point ) to camp halfblood. hades and maria ( justifiably ) don’t believe zeus’ intentions are good, so hades offers maria and his children a place in the underworld ( which is why persephone hates nico so much, like imagine your husband announced he was gonna move his mistress and kids into your home ), which maria declines since she doesn’t want her kids raised in that environment. long story short, they were right about zeus, and he blows up the hotel they were staying at. maria is killed in the accident but hades is able to save his children from zeus’ attack ( which is what has them being sent to the lotus casino, it’s the only place he can think of to keep them safe and out of zeus’ gaze ). hades says in a flashback scene that they’ve already gone over the deadline for when the kids have to be sent away by one week. if we assume that the pact was made official on the winter solstice, as i do, the first day of the new year seems like a logical deadline to have. add a week to that, and it’s january 7th, 1946. this is honestly the closest i can get to a reasonable death year for maria, as it follows after the formation of the pact, which is the reason for her death in the first place, and establishes a reasonable timeline of events leading up to her dying that fits with canon.

why the gap year after the lotus casino? : canon. nico excitedly tells percy and the gang about all the monsters that have been following after them for the last year or so, and grover’s been tracking them down for awhile by the time titan’s curse rolls around. so yea, that happens, and while it gives nico a bit more time to grow and puts him out of step with how old he’s supposed to be ( grover claims that nico is ten years old; my canon has him as being twelve in titan’s curse ), it sticks as close to canon as possible and ends up with nico being almost the same age. he’s slightly older in the end, but sometimes it be like that.

nico’s time in tartarus : canon says he’s in there about eleven days, and he just about loses his gd mind. annabeth and percy are in tartarus for eighteen days and come out traumatized but they haven’t gone totally crazy. part of this is due to the fact that they have each other, but it’s canon that nico as a child of hades would have more resilience to the effects of tartarus. i have him being in tartarus for closer to a month because i think it would take longer to mentally break him to the extent he is than it would for annabeth and percy, and we know from things like nico meeting akherys ( who says that she can’t do much to him because he’s already so miserable ) that he’s not as strongly affected by tartarus as others are. so based on what we know of nico’s resilience levels and his time in tartarus, and what we learn from annabeth and percy’s trip, i think making the time that nico spends in tartarus last longer makes the most sense.

What’s In a Book? Part 28

On The Bonus Day Of Fun I present... a book review! It’s hard to believe that my last review was also done last year! This year I’ve really set my sights on buying a few books that my collection dearly needs, so this will (hopefully) not be the last review you’ll see in 2019!

Book’s cover courtesy of Amazon Japan. 京都五花街 - 祇園甲部 - 宮川町 - 先斗町 - 上七軒 - 祇園東 - The Kyoto Gokagai by Hiroshi Mizobuchi 溝縁ひろし (ISBN 978-4-8381-0432-1) Date of Publication: 2010 Language: Dual Japanese and English (Mostly) Format: Softcover Availability: Still being printed and easily found online Price: $15 Errors: 1 As can be guessed by the look of the cover, this book came between Kyoto Hanamachi and The Kagai In Kyoto. Already with the title and introduction we can see how the author is now using the more correct term of “Kagai” instead of “Hanamachi” as that is the term used in Kyoto. It’s also nice to note that if you look at the English page with the publishing information you’ll notice some Japanese text and numbers at the bottom. These are actually the statistics for how many maiko and geiko were active at the time! I’m not too sure why they were kinda hidden there, but it seems like a fun easter egg for people who are paying attention. As of September 2009 there were 194 geiko and 89 maiko, which isn’t too far off of the current count of 188 geiko and 74 maiko. One of my only qualms is how the book begins. Even though pretty much every event has the information written in Japanese and English the entire index is written in Japanese only. This would be remedied in his next book, but it seems like a bit of an oversight that should have been corrected for this book. Overall, the book is split into three separate parts: The Calendar of Events, The Miscellaneous Maiko and Geiko Information, and The Gokagai Directory. Part 1: The Calendar of Events We’ve seen this before numerous times, so I’ll quickly list off each event covered, along with a small blurb. Each event name is as it appears in the book: Shinen New Year’s Day - Details the kadomatsu ornaments outside of businesses. Shigyōshiki Year Opening Ceremony - Ceremony to officially open the kagai. There’s a few pages of photographs showing the ceremonies in each kagai along with descriptions, but they’re only written in Japanese. Hatsuyori New Year Greeting - Gion Kobu’s special rounds. Setsubun Seasonal Division Ritual and Obake Disguise - Ceremonial dances performed at various shrines along with bean tossing and dressing up in costumes for ozashiki. Baika(sai) Plum Blossom Festival - Outdoor tea ceremony at Kitano Tenmangu hosted by the maiko and geiko of Kamishichiken. Oishi Ki Memorial Service - Special memorial service for Kuranosuke Oishi, leader of the 47 Ronin, held at the Ichiriki. Miyako Odori Dance Performance - Gion Kobu’s annual spring dances. Kyō Odori Dance Performance - Miyagawa Cho’s annual spring dances. Kitano Odori Dance Performance - Kamishichiken’s annual spring dances. It’s placed after the other two as the Kitano Odori used to take place at the end of April; it now takes place during the last week of March and the first week of April. Takasegawa Canal Sakura Cherry Blossom Festival - Held by the maiko and geiko of Pontocho each April. Dance Dedication For Annual Festival of Heian Shrine - The spectacular dedication dances of the four kagai associated with the Heian Shrine. You may know it better from its Japanese name as the Heian Jingu Reitaisai Hono Būyo Matsuri. Kamogawa Dance Performance - Pontocho’s annual spring dances. End of Miyako Odori Rituals - The Gion Kobu maiko and geiko praying together with their Inoue teachers for a successful Miyako Odori. It used to take place each year on May 1st as the odori ran from April 1st to the 30th at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, but since it’s been moved to various locations for the past three years while the kaburenjo is undergoing retrofitting the dates have changed. In 2019 it will take place on April 28th. Kanki Inari Shrine Festival - Gion Higashi’s big event for the spring where they celebrate the ongoing success of the shrine with an outdoor tea ceremony. Fumi No Kai Singing Performance - A nagauta festival hosted by Miyagawa Cho in the early summer. Kyoto Gokagai Traditional Dance Performance Miyako No Nigiwai - The annual combined dances of the five kagai on the third weekend in June. There’s seven pages of images dedicated to this event! Beer Garden - Various outdoor beer gardens hosted by Kamishichiken. Since theirs has proven to be very popular Miyagawa Cho and Pontocho have also followed suit in recent years. Osendo Thousand Time Shrine Visit - The gathering of all maiko and geiko of Gion Kobu together with their dance teachers to pray for success on July 7th in specially made yukata. It’s better known by it’s other name of Miyabi Kai Osendo. Sannin No Kai Performance - An event held only a few times from what I can find. It featured the best dancers from Gion Kobu, Pontocho, and Miyagawa Cho and ended with a dance by Yachiyo Inoue and Mitsugoro Bando, the heads of the Inoue and Onoe Schools. Gion Festival - The massive festival that takes place for the majority of July and is one of Japan’s Big Three festivals. It also details the Hanagasa Junko and the Dedication Dances by the maiko and geiko who are selected to perform each year. Yukata Kai Summer Music Learning - Annual event held by Miyagawa Cho in which the performers all wear yukata. Since this book was written Kamishichiken and Gion Higashi have also began their own Yukata Kai. Hassaku Summer Greeting - The annual rounds of thanks on August 1st each year. Autumn Dance Performance Practice - Beginning in September the gokagai each get ready to host their annual fall dances. Zuiki Festival - Annual event in Kamishichiken that celebrates the harvest. Onshū-kai Dance Performance - Gion Kobu’s annual autumn dances. Mizue-kai Dance Performance - Miyagawa Cho’s annual autumn dances. Kotobuki-kai Dance Performance - Kamishichiken’s annual autumn dances. Suimei-kai Dance Performance - Pontocho’s annual autumn dances. Jidai Festival - The annual procession that celebrates over 1,200 years of Kyoto history with participants dressed in period accurate clothing. Fire Drill - Annual demonstration of how to put out fires by maiko of each district. Gion Odori Dance Performance - Gion Higashi’s annual dances. Chion-In Gion Odori Presentation Dance (知恩院祇園をどり奉納舞) - This part was in Japanese only, and it appears as though after the Gion Odori the maiko and geiko of Gion Higashi did a dedication dance at Chion-In following the Gion Odori. I am not aware of this event still existing though. Ohitaki Fire Festival - Annual event held at all shrines where wishes written on paper are ceremoniously burned. Kanikakuni Festival - Annual dedication of flowers at Osamu Yoshii’s monument that features his famous poem Kanikakuni. Ichi-go Ichi-e (Treasure Every Encounter For It Will Never Recur) Autumn Tea Ceremony Party - An event held by the maiko and geiko of Gion Kobu in which they perform a tea ceremony and dances. I do not recall this event happening within the past few years. Gion Kouta Festival - Two maiko from each kagai read the lyrics of the famous Gion Kouta in front of a monument in Maruyama Park. Each kagai takes part on a rotating basis. Kaomise Soken Kabuki Watching - Annual viewing of the first kabuki performances of the year by each kagai. Kitano Kencha Tea Dedication Festival - Annual tea ceremony hosted by the maiko and geiko of Kamishichiken that celebrates the tea festival held by Toyotomi Hideyoshi that lead to the establishment of Kamishichiken. Kotohajime New Year Preparation - Visit to the head of each dance school where maiko and geiko give a gift of pounded rice cakes and receive a new fan to use in the new year. Okotosan Year End Greeting and Okera-bi Fire Offering - The annual year end greetings where maiko and geiko receive fukudama and the shrine fire ceremony where maiko and geiko light a special rope that is then used to light the oven for the new year. Part 2: The Miscellaneous Maiko and Geiko Information A short section that features an interview with a maiko (Japanese only), the misedashi process (Japanese only), a section about various maiko accessories, such as hair ornaments, hanameishi, dance fans, pocchiri, and kago (Japanese only), maiko hairstyles (Japanese only), the erikae process (Japanese only), the hiki iwai retirement process (Japanese Only), and ozashiki asobi practices (Japanese only). This is then followed by a two page blurb about Shimabara, which is written in Japanese and English. Part 3: The Gokagai Directory This may seem a bit odd to English speakers, but listed within are the history of each kagai, maps of the kagai, where all ochaya are located on said maps, and even the phone numbers for each ochaya. Obviously you can’t just call up these places as you need an introduction, but it’s not uncommon for Japanese publications to print phone numbers for businesses. This is still practiced with odori program books too! Like his other books, this section is entirely in Japanese. Like all of his other books, the real charm here is from his absolutely GORGEOUS images. This book is loaded with images for each event and even some random outdoor images that mark the changing of each season. It’s a feast for the eyes that makes this book worth the (very affordable) price alone! During the entire book I found one error, and it’s an English issue. In the introduction the English part states that a shikomi period can also be known as a minarai period, but it’s correct on the Japanese side of the text in that it states that the minarai period comes after the shikomi period. For those of you who are looking for an affordable book that details the events of the gokagai along with stunning images then this is the book for you! Rating: ✪✪✪✪✪ (out of 5)

Elizabeth in Mary’s reign

There’s a wide assumption that the two Tudor sisters hated each other. It’s well known Elizabeth was imprisoned in the Tower during Mary’s reign... and that’s about it for their whereabouts and relationship until the former becomes Queen in 1558. I was curious to see how much time the two sisters actually spent together during Mary’s 5 year rule; here’s what I discovered.

On the 3rd of August, a triumphant Mary rode into London. By this time her sister Elizabeth and her household had joined her, though how many days the pair had been reunited is unknown.

Elizabeth had sent a letter to Mary c.22nd of July to “congratulate her on her accession, and to beg her to let her know in what dress she desires to see her when she goes to salute her: whether her garb shall be mourning or not.”

It is clear she had arrived at least a day before the 3rd, as the Spanish ambassador Simon Renard notes “Her estate has been increased since the Queen's accession.”

On the 19th October Renard writes “Elizabeth is soon leaving Court, as she told me herself last Tuesday.”.

On the 28th, it is confirmed “The Lady Elizabeth has left Court.”, but despite officially leaving the court, Elizabeth still appears to be frequently around Mary.

She is recorded on the 4th of November as being in “the house in town that the Queen gave her (Somerset Place); [and] not gone into the country as I [Renard] had been told”.

It seems that while Elizabeth wasn’t living at court at the time, she spent most of her time there; almost a month later on the 3rd of December, Renard writes that “The Queen told me that Elizabeth had asked leave to depart for her house next Wednesday.”

In the same dispatch he mentions of an incidence on the 30th of November involving Elizabeth on the way to Mass, indicating Elizabeth was virtually a courtier but living in her own, separate household nearby at Somerset Place. As mentioned earlier her household/estate was increased upon Mary becoming Queen (likely to emphasise her new position as heir) so this makes logical sense to avoid overcrowding.

By the 8th of December, Elizabeth had left for Ashridge, “a place thirty miles away on the road to Scotland. She very courteously took leave of the Queen, who also dissembled well and gave her sister a rich coif of sable.”

In the beginning of 1554 Wyatt’s rebellion broke out with serious consequences for Elizabeth. Suspected to be working with the rebels, the relationship between the two sisters soured and Mary immediately summoned Elizabeth back to court.

The first mention of Elizabeth returning is on the 23rd of February. She is recorded as being “dressed all in white and followed by a great company of the Queen's people and her own."

Despite ordering Elizabeth to come, “the Queen would not see her and had her lodged in a part of her house out of which neither she nor any of her suite can pass without crossing the guard.”

The situation quickly became worse for Elizabeth. In March it was decided she would be moved to the Tower of London, and 2 months later, on the 20th of May, “the Lady Elizabeth was taken out of the Tower and conducted to Richmond. Thence she has been conveyed to Woodstock, there to be kept.”

Elizabeth would be kept on virtual house arrest for the remainder of the year.

While Elizabeth remained at Woodstock, Mary married Philip II of Spain and believed herself to be pregnant. As the suspected due date for the new heir to England approached, around the 25th of April “it was decided to bring Elizabeth here to Court in a few days, before the Queen's confinement takes place”.

By the 6th of May Elizabeth was at court. She had arrived “very privately, accompanied by three or four of her women, and as many more [male] servants, but was neither met nor received by any one, and was placed in the apartment of the Duke of Alva, where she lives in retirement, not having been seen by any one save once or twice by their Majesties, by private stairs.”

On the 25th, James Basset wrote to Edward Courtenay that “My Lady Elizabeth is at her full liberty, yet she remaineth still at the court. She hath seen the Queen's highness twice.”

At the beginning of August, Mary retired to Oatlands Palace, and “leave was given to “Miladi” Elizabeth to withdraw with all her attendants to a house distant three miles from her Majesty's; and on the Queen's expected return to Hampton Court in eight or ten days, it is supposed that said “Miladi” will not come back again, but either remain where she is, or go to another of her palaces, as she is completely free.”

On the 27th, Mary and Philip went to Greenwich “where the Queen will remain during the whole time of the King's stay beyond sea.”

Mary and Elizabeth’s relationship, severely damaged from the last year and a half, seems to improve over this summer. Perhaps Mary wanted comfort after her false pregnancy and Philip’s departure, and genuinely missed her little sister. Perhaps she was once again showing England that for now Elizabeth remained her heir. Whatever the reason, the two sisters were now enjoying a close, if not entirely comfortable, relationship again.

Though not stated at the time, we know Elizabeth stayed with Mary for the next 2 months.

On the 21st of October, Mary opened Parliament after “coming from St. James', whither she retired on her return from Greenwich. The Lady Elizabeth, who resided permanently with the Queen at Greenwich, has had permission to proceed to a house of her own 17 miles hence.”

The first half of 1556 was dominated by the Dudley conspiracy, where suspicion was once again cast on Elizabeth. Though not meeting physically, the sisters sent letters to each other. In June:

“the Queen was induced to send to her [Elizabeth] in the country [at Hatfield] yesterday, Sir Edward Hastings, Master of the Horse, and Sir H. Englefield, one of the Lords of the Royal Council, to console and comfort her on behalf of her Majesty, knowing, as may well be supposed, that this circumstance had distressed and dejected her; and to present her, as a token of loving salutation, and of a message of good will, according to the custom here, with a ring worth 400 ducats [...] using in short loving and gracious expressions, to show her that she is neither neglected nor hated, but loved and esteemed by her Majesty.”

The sisters reunited in person later in the year; on the 23rd of November it is reported that “The Lady Elizabeth is expected here in four days from the country, nor is it yet known whether she will lodge in the palace with the most Serene Queen, or in her own house [Somerset Place], with her attendants”.

On the 1st of December, the Venetian ambassador Giovanni Michiel writes that

“Three days ago Miladi Elizabeth arrived from the country, 15 miles off, with a handsome retinue, having with her, including lords and gentlemen, upwards of 200 horsemen clad in her own livery, and dismounted at her own house [Somerset Place], where she has remained ever since, to the infinite pleasure of this entire population, though she was not met by any of the lords or gentlemen of the court, but many visited her subsequently. Three days afterwards she went to the Queen, and according to report was received very graciously and familiarly. [...] It cannot yet be ascertained whether she came for any other purpose than that of visiting the Queen, she having with great earnestness solicited to come, and not having been called.”

A week later on the 7th, he is disappointed that “The Lady Elizabeth departed so suddenly that I had not time to pay her my visit, which will be reserved for another occasion.”

It is unknown whether Elizabeth had planned to have such a short visit, or left after an argument with Mary, though it is worth noting that the French King heard:

“that the Queen sent for the Lady Elizabeth to the Court, and proposed to her to marry her to the Duke of Savoy, to which she replied that the afflictions suffered by her were such that they had not only ridded her of any wish for a husband, but that they had induced her to desire nothing but death, and then by a flood of tears she brought them also to the eyes of the Queen, who seeing that she still persisted in this opinion of not choosing to marry, dismissed her from the Court, and purposed assembling Parliament to have her declared illegitimate and consequently incapable of succeeding to the Crown.”

Though this report contradicts Michiel’s account of Elizabeth being the one to initiate a visit, it is well known Philip urged Mary to marry Elizabeth to the Duke.

Whatever the reason, the sisters were in each others company for around a week before separating once more.

At the time of writing this post I’ve found no evidence that Elizabeth visited Mary throughout 1557. On the 13th of May the Venetian ambassador Michiel wrote his infamous report about the two sisters, stating:

“It cannot be denied that she [Queen Mary] displays in many ways the scorn and ill will she bears her [Elizabeth]; the Queen, whenever she sees her, fancying herself in the presence of the affronts and ignominious treatment to which she was subjected on account of her mother, from whom in great part the divorce from Queen Katherine originated.

[...]

Having no suitable cause to proceed against her she dissembles her hatred and anger as much as she can, and endeavours when they are together in public to receive her with every sort of graciousness and honour, nor does she ever converse with her about any but agreeable subjects.”

Henry Machyn writes in his diary that “The xxv [25th] of February came riding to London my lady Elizabeth the queens sister with a great company of lords and noble men and women, to her place called Somerset Place.”

Elizabeth stayed for around a week, with Machyn later writing “the 3rd day of March a’for-non my lady Elizabeth’s grace took her horses and rode to her place at [?] With many lords, knights and ladies, and gentlewoman, with a goodly company of horses.”

This is the last recorded meeting of Mary and Elizabeth seeing each other in person. Though I have yet to find a source detailing a visit to court during this time, it is easy to assume that like previous occasions Elizabeth visited Mary whilst staying at Somerset Place.

The sisters continued to correspond through letters throughout the year until Mary’s death, and in the last days of Mary’s life the two sisters seemed to have finally made peace with each other.

“She [Mary] was moved to send two gentlemen to that lady [Elizabeth], to let her know that, as it had pleased the Lord God to end her days, she was content that she as her sister should become Queen, and prayed her to maintain the kingdom and the Catholic religion, in words replete with much affection; to which she [Elizabeth] sent a most gracious reply by two of her attendants, who visited the Queen in her name, condoling with her on her malady.”

Over a month ago, I was talking about Onyx Path‘s sales venues and things like that. Just kind of getting folks caught up on where they could find our stuff and which projects you could find there.

A different, but similar, thing that I wanted to touch on today is some of the other sorts of projects we have to offer beyond book-shaped things. Specifically, because Mighty Matt McElroy sent me some pics of the proofs for a couple of card projects, I’m going to touch on those today.

(Never mind that I haven’t received my card proof samples yet…sob.)

There are two types of card-based projects that we have been creating. The first, are card games. We don’t do a lot of them, as we need to see a clear connection to whatever TTRPG they are derived from or it’s tough to put effort towards them when there are books to be created.

Right now, we have Justin Achilli’s Prince’s Gambit for Vampire: The Masquerade, which we saw as a fun political machinations game that is waaay shorter than a VTES match. Something to play while waiting for your RPG or LARP session to start up.

And Fetch Quest for Realms of Pugmire, which has shipped to Kickstarter backers, should be available to order and in stores in May, and which we are waiting for the PoD proofs for. This is a cooperative card game set in the wilds around Pugmire that complements the TTRPG.

In fact, we’re looking to have the option for folks to make their own cards via DriveThruCards, so folks can play their TTRPG characters.

You might have noticed that the part of DriveThru that deals with these sorts of things is DriveThru Cards, which is a different Print on Demand company than the one who does our books. Everything still all goes through DTRPG, or OBS as it’s corporately known, but the card guys have their own little differences in how they proof, etc.

We’ve been really happy with the quality of their cards, and that’s one of the reasons we have made both the games, and the second type of card projects we put together: roleplaying aids. These can be the extensive selection of Charm Cards for Exalted 3rd, or Condition Cards for our CofD games, or Trick Cards for Pugmire, and more.

Pugmire also has Spell Cards, and right now we are proofing Spell Cards for the Scarred Lands that can be used for a SL campaign, or worked into any 5e fantasy roleplaying session.

If you’re saying, “Hey, what is this here Scarred Lands you keep going on about, Mr. Rich?“, then you should give a listen to last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast where our terrific trio take a Deep Dive into the Scarred Lands setting, and highlight the things that they think really work. They do a fantastic job of conveying what they love and are intrigued by in Scarred Lands, which is actually really interesting to me, as a guy who helped create it way back in the crazy d20 Rush days. None of our Trio were around then, so to hear them go over the parts that compel them about our new edition and the first one, is kind of like hearing a whole new generation finding it.

Makes me feel both old and proud, by crackee!

Finally, to wrap up the Scion Errata situation I touched on the last couple of weeks, Neall, in his non-real-world-job time, was able to assemble and create a list of the corrections that he had made but which hadn’t stuck. We turned that into a downloadable PDF (in both full-color and easy to print versions) for any and all to get ahold of, and input the corrections and the backer credits into the PDF and the upcoming PoD files.

When all was said and done, there is a page of Scion: Origin errata, a page of Scion: Hero errata, a page for a FAQ Neall put together, and ten updated pre-generated character sheets. For perspective, Neall’s original list derived from backer input from all over the internet was well over 300 entries (many of them duplicates) across the two books so the vast majority of the fixes worked – except for a page per book’s worth.

While we wanted all of the errata we painstakingly gathered and collated to have stuck as we intended, and we’ve changed a couple of processes to try and make sure that when a change is made it by-gum sticks, we’re just glad that none of them were so bad that they wrecked the books and made them impossible to read and play.

As Neall noted in a message to the backers, we’re disappointed that the projects aren’t as polished as we intended, and we apologize to all involved for disappointing you too.

Kimi Raikkonen 2008: Connecting the "dots"

September 10, 2013 UPDATE: Today, Ferrari announced Kimi's re-signing for 2014 F1 season as a SF driver. In many ways this is a confirmation of what we have been saying all along that Kimi's ousting at the end of his first stint took place under a totally unusual circumstances which had nothing to do with his racing and driving abilities.

I'll continue to update this documentary blog as new information becomes available but judging from the visitor traffic to this blog a lot of people are now even more curious as to why would Ferrari re-employ Kimi if in fact all those reasons and justifications to fire him were true... So, my guess is that we'll continue to learn a lot more about the details of 2008 events as the insiders continue to talk (they always do...). We'll keep this documentary blog as an example of a Hall of Shame Piece for Formula One Journalists who have been either sleeping on the job or too scared to expose/talk about what goes on behind close doors...

The period between April-July 2008 is probably one of the worst periods not only for Kimi’s F1 career but probably in his life. All his life he and his family believed in hard work and doing their best to achieve good things on merit. In Kimi’s case this means putting his natural talents to best use in performing, and winning races.

2007 season was a dream come true year for Kimi. He won the closely fought Formula One (F1) World Drivers Championship (WDC) and was ready for defending his title in 2008. From all indications outlook for the 2008 season was pretty good, arguably conditions were even better than the 2007 season for Kimi to defend his title.

Backdrop for 2008:

As of April, Kimi Raikkonen is already leading in WDC points 4 races into the 2008 season. Generally, life is good other than the management changes that took place at Ferrari as

as the head of Scuderia Ferrari the 1st of January 2008. It's no secret that Todt and

Luca di Montezemolo

(LdM)

had a power struggle within Ferrari, something which lead to Todt'd eventual and swift exit. With Todt effectively out of the way from early 2008 and Domenicali, di Montezemolo's protege, in his place it was basically a different Scuderia overnight

(thanks to OSX).

"In 2007, [Todt] prepared the ground for Stefano Domenicali to succeed him as head of the Scuderia as from 1 January 2008. Then, on 18 March 2008, he resigned his position as Special Advisor to the Ferrari board, to be replaced by Amedeo Felisa. He nonetheless remained a member of the board of Ferrari for a further year before resigning all his functions within the Italian firm in March 2009."

“It was a perfect weekend for us in Barcelona,” explained Raikkonen. “We were going really fast all the time and we didn’t have the slightest problem. Many times I have won and afterwards still had the feeling that it could have gone better. This time I did not have that feeling: this was probably the best weekend I’ve ever had in my career.”

: The guy won Spain just several days ago… then, all of a sudden Public Relations (PR) seed planting & “rumors” kick in. It is not clear who started them but the mission was to melt the iceman because it would be terrible PR to get rid of a 2 times WDC, in the event that he managed to win the 2nd one in 2008.

In the following, partially narrated timeline, I tried to put the main news item with the earliest approx. date of first showing up (in google news based on article posting date) out of 100s or 1000s regurgitated ones for each article. – German magazine Sport Bild

According to popular German magazine Sport Bild, it would seem that Spanish bank Santander would be moving from sponsoring McLaren to become one of Ferrari’s top sponsors from 2009 onwards. The big bank would have their adverts on the front and rear wings, alongside lettering on the drivers overalls. Ferrari have been touting for a new top sponsor since cigarette advertisers were not allowed in many countries, Marlboro being the major backer for many years. With a contract with Marlboro still in place, hash markings would still be on the cars. For the Scuderia though, Santander have said the major condition of their deal is that former World Champion Fernando Alonso would drive for the team. He won’t confirm his future, and will not comment until September.

I think that is an accidental slip up by the Spaniard because the September date was significant only to Kimi’s contract. According to Interview with Ferrari team principle Domenicali on December 16 2008, this is the point Kimi lost his front suspension. From all indications this was a surprise to Kimi, given how sensitive he is to changes made on the car.

Question to Domenicali by Autosprint:

Did Kimi share his problems with you? - We always talk with each other and argue about general technical issues. From the technical point of view he was dissatisfied with front suspension, and it didn't work the way he wanted. The front suspension to suit him was a recurrent topic of our discussions. How fast did you discover that? - In midseason. We changed the suspension in Germany and returned it for Kimi in Monza.

In this interview Domenicali misspoke. Kimi got his old suspension back in Singapore, not Monza. This issue is also alluded to by Michael Scumacher who is in charge of car development and updates:

“In a way it is his (Kimi's) strength that he has a very focused vision, and maybe sometimes it doesn't always help him. We could maybe help him more if he would ask for it,”

said Schumacher in an interview for BBC earlier yesterday. The German insisted that part of Kimi's loss in form in the second part of the season was because the Fin failed to adapt to the new developments introduced by Ferrari in the mid-season. “I think I have to protect him in many ways, because in the middle of the season we made some developments to the car but Kimi simply didn't get on with these ones. The moment we went back to those changes, we got him back to competitive lap times," link

Here, if we look at the WDC points table, from mid-July to the end of September Kimi was able to score only 9 points in 6 GPs. Surely, there was some bad luck involved as well...

: Mr. Schumacher definitely knew what was the deal but maybe he did not have a chance to inform Kimi that his front suspension was totally different for the German GP... This also amplifies the communication and turf problems between Domenicali and Schumacher.

Now, imagine or try to visualize what would Schumacher himself (as a driver) or Alonso would have done after learning the fact that their front suspension was replaced without their knowledge or they were not invited to driver debriefs... not a pretty picture huh.

Interestingly, Schumacher made another comment back in early April about Massa with a prediction. At the time, it was not a big deal but hindsight his support for Massa, and willingness to predict his WDC chances, given his 3rd and development driver role for Ferrari, further supports the timeline that he knew a bit more...

"He (Massa) has zero points for the season, so it is not the best of starts ... he has played his jokers so far, and doesn't really have any more jokers to play,"

"But things will turn around very quickly I think in his favour. He is certainly still very capable of winning the championship this year.

Massa: “My win in Valencia moves me ahead of Kimi into second place in the championship. I’ve been asked if I feel Ferrari should favour me for the title since there are just six races remaining. All I can say is that I want to keep winning, to keep beating not just my teammate (Kimi Raikkonen) but others too,” Massa was quoted as saying on the Ferrari website. The Brazilian, who is on 64 points, six behind the leader Lewis Hamilton, further added that he has got nothing to do with such decisions. “I just do the best possible job for the team and leave the rest to the management,” he added.

Raikkonen is third on the table with 57 points. Meanwhile, Kimi has rubbished the claim that he lacks motivation.“Next week, we will go to Spa (venue of the next Grand Prix). I love this track. I will give it all to win again. If someone has doubt as far as my motivation is concerned: go ahead. I want to win. More than ever,” he said on the Ferrari website.

– Ferrari confirm Raikkonen to end of 2010 —

Ferrari have announced an extension to Kimi Raikkonen’s contract for a further two seasons, keeping the world champion with the Italian team until the end of 2010. With Raikkonen’s teammate Felipe Massa also under contract for that period, it means Ferrari’s race line-up will remain unchanged until at least the start of their 2011 campaign. Raikkonen joined Ferrari from McLaren last season, while Massa has been with the team since 2006. The announcement should end media speculation suggesting that Raikkonen may retire at the end of this season.

– Alonso "Kimi deal has no impact"

Fernando Alonso insists that Kimi Raikkonen's extended Ferrari deal has not put a dent in his plans for the future. Ferrari announced on Friday that Raikkonen had extended his contract and would remain with the Scuderia until the end of 2010.

This put an end to reports that Alonso could be heading to Ferrari at the end of 2009.

However, the Spaniard insists those were just rumours and that Raikkonen's deal has not upset his future plans.

"I knew already that they will extend the contract," he told Autosport. "Nothing has changed. "Talking about 2010 and 2011 is way too far for me. I want to win before that! "Always my plans were more focused on 2009 and in 2009 there was no possibility of Ferrari so it was never in my plans." It remains to be seen which team Alonso will race for next season as while Renault are keen to retain their double world champion, Honda are also reportedly on the look-out to sign him.

: Alonso knew Kimi had to exercise the automatic contract renewal option after negotiations with Santander failed... I guess he could not convince Botin to pay up Kimi to walk at the end of 2008, so he could move to Ferrari starting 2009. It is interesting that Kimi's contract renewal announcement date is the same date as Alonso's statement: September 12 2008.

I also think between July and September 2008 Santander explored various possibilities to get McLaren let them off the hook from the exclusivity clause in the old Santander-McLaren sponsorship agreement but their attempts were unsuccessful (probably Ron asked for a lot of money). If that took place Santander could have started their Ferrari sponsorship a year earlier. So, during this period (until September) Kimi was waiting to see if he would be able to end his relationship with Ferrari at the end of 2008.

Even though he is still within the mathematical possibility with 4 races left in the calendar (he is 20 pts behind Massa, and yet that still is better odds than 2007); he is up to his neck in the swamp trying to fight/fend off elegators on multiple fronts:

His relationship with Schumacher. It was never emphasized in 2008 but I think it was a very significant issue. For 2008, Michael’s role was, per LdM: “official 3rd driver, in charge of car development.” See footnote 1 (and check out Michael’s Ferrari and wiki profile for his role in 2008). Kimi did not like this at all because Michael was in charge of something (the car itself) that he had been used to controlling/influencing all his career. Link

Pressure from LdM and Dom to help out Massa because if Massa wins the 2008 WDC, Santander will be thrilled given their upcoming 2009 IPO in Brazil. In my opinion, Dom or LdM never mandated this, but they highly encouraged Kimi to fall back because financial implications for Santander, the future sponsor, was in Billions of $. (not Millions, it is Billions) And because Massa is a native son of Brazil who can mobilize local investors even better than Alonso. here. In the end, Santander’s IPO gains were about $9 Billion. Spanish media is claiming that Ferrari’s recent decision to re-sign Kimi Raikkonen until the end of 2010, is a smokescreen, aimed at putting everyone off the real story, which sees Fernando Alonso heading to Maranello as early as next year. Spanish newspaper Marca claims that Santander, which headed to McLaren with Fernando Alonso in 2007, is behind a move which will see the two-time champion join Felipe Massa. The Spanish banking giant is due to take its account to Ferrari next year, and, having lost out when Alonso quit McLaren after just one season, wants its national hero back on board and in a winning (red) car. It’s claimed that the bank will not only meet Alonso’s financial requirements but will also meet any compensation demanded by Raikkonen.

It is fair to say that the announcement that Raikkonen is to stay with Ferrari for two more years caught many by surprise, especially since the Finn appears to have lost his sparkle in recent months, a situation not helped by the fact that he is now almost certain – barring a miracle recovery – of having to play second fiddle to his Brazilian teammate. While several teams, most notably Honda, have been wooing Alonso, the Spaniard needs to be back in a winning car, and other than BMW – which is backed by Santander’s rival Credit Suisse – Ferrari appears to be the only option.

The only thing they could not foresee was Massa’s accident in 2009. Kimi’s departure was a done deal as early as May, 25 2008, latest Sep 14 2008. They just had to make sure he did not accidently win 2008 WDC as Ferrari would have looked really stupid… Very curious about that pit screw up in Monaco, if it was real or orchestrated because this is where it all started, it is a milestone event for things starting to go wrong for Kimi for the rest of the year, along with some unlucky situations.

May 25, 2008 FIA post race Monaco — Kimi “A very poor race for me, right from the off. There was a problem with a wheel before the start and we broke the rules, which meant I was given a drive-through penalty. During the race, my main problem was trying to get the tyres to work as well as possible. Then we decided to change the strategy as we expected it to rain again, but it didn’t happen. Twice I had to change the nose after breaking the front wing. So, as you can see, a long run of things going wrong which explains the 0 points. I am sorry for Sutil, who I hit with just a few laps to go. I lost control of the car under braking coming out of the tunnel and I could do nothing to avoid him. It’s a shame how things went today, as we had the potential to do well. It’s true that I’ve lost the championship lead, but I always said the championship would be a very long one. Now we must prepare as well as possible for Canada where we will try to make up for this disappointment.”

That is why, Kimi always said;

“There are many reasons. In F1 there is always a lot of money and there can always be different options. That’s what happened in the end. It’s nothing to do with racing or what I do in the team.”

In short, Kimi was in the wrong team, at the wrong time stuck between Ferrari and future sponsor Santander, because he had the wrong nationality (the Latin lineup), relative to Santander’s business plans, and Ferrari’s role within.

Ferrari has no problem with Kimi Räikkönen contesting Finland's famous Arctic Lapland Rally later this month, team boss Stefano Domenicali has insisted.

Formula one teams often baulk at drivers' requests to engage in dangerous off-season activities, but it emerged last week that Räikkönen, the team's title winner of 2007, has entered himself as the driver of a Fiat Abarth S2000 in the event later this month.

"This is the traditional attitude we take to our drivers," Domenicali said at the launch of the team's new 'F60' single seater for 2009.

"We always try to have a very open attitude to what they do. I see this as an extra two days of testing for Kimi."

Option 1) 2 year full pay (2010+severance) provided he walked away from F1 for 1.5 years.

Option 2) 1 years pay (2010) + some severance + get the McLaren seat.

The following snippets are one of the few direct mentions of Massa's role within the Santander world from Mr. Cendoya, who is the Senior Executive Vice President in charge of Communications, Corporate Marketing and Research for Santander Bank (Mr. Botin's number 2 guy for sponsorship affairs)

... Cendoya is understandably reluctant to place the bank in the pecking order of Ferrari sponsors and says simply: In Ferrari, we are on the podium and the podium is a very good place to be. Ferrari has a process and they are going to announce the car and image later on. We are a main sponsor; we are not a title sponsor. I cannot say more... ... Cendoya rightly points out that Santander is not in charge of driver selection and intriguingly suggests that, for example, the commercial appeal of current Ferrari driver Felipe Massa might be an effective way of growing the brand worldwide the implication being that, even with Alonso on board, the bank's popularity might only increase in Spain by one or two percentage points, whereas the potential gains in other markets are significantly greater. Cendoya says it is all about creating an emotional link between potential new customers and the bank. How many Spanish people, for example, are today very happy because we are with Ferrari? I don't know, but in my opinion a lot because I received more than 700 emails giving felicitations for this agreement. Every employee in our bank can guess a figure but it could be 10 million. In Brazil there are 50 million fans of Formula One, 80 per cent of them are Ferrari fans and they now feel happy and proud of being part of the Santander group (source article:: Sport is playing its part in the Santander story).

This SprortsPro article is very telling about why Kimi had to go without mentioning his name even once. Mr. Cendoya further states;

Cendoya makes clear, a cold, rational business decision, just as was the decision to sponsor McLaren three years ago. We started at the McLaren team, with an English pilot and a Spanish pilot at the beginning. We had a low presence in the team but we paid a lot of attention to every penny, peseta, euro that we were spending. We don't give money away. We have given a lot of attention over the last 100 years to caring for the money of our shareholders.

: This article also sheds light into Massa's continued presence at Ferrari without results (read update on this here). His presence alone is enough to produce the expected

Return On Investment

(ROI) at the levels that are even better than what Alonso is able to generate as a Spaniard. Santader's ROI does not even depend on Alonso or Massa winning races. Given their demographics they have enough appeal in the Latino world to satisfy Santander's financial expectations by just driving the red cars around to boost credit card, insurance, other financial instrument sales as well as merchandising.

What is a bit hard to understand is how the journos/media could not connect these dots to show what really went on in 2008. You do not have to do any major investigation because pretty much everything is in the public domain. While we understand commercial pressures on the racing business, 2008-9 was anything but sporting for Ferrari. They should have just let him go after 2007 instead of playing all kinds of games, and engaging in a PR war to give it an appearance of performance problems.

I suspect, even Massa will not bet against Kimi’s performance this year, or when he appeared to beat him back in 2008-9 as he knows what the deal was relative to his role within the Santander world. I think Kimi understood the business aspect of the issues, and in line with his character never washed any dirty Ferrari laundry in public. Yes, he did have several unlucky situations but his fate was already signed and sealed mid season 2008 purely for business reasons. 2009 was essentially continuation of the 2008 theatrics until Massa’s accident. On another front, almost identical scenario (to Santander-Massa-Brasil situation) is in play for Perez in a Santander sponsored car (Ferrari or McLaren) — Perez-Santander-Mexico, from the same playbook.

I won a title with them and had some good times. I am satisfied with the three years I spent there.

The situation could have been better, but it’s the past and what is done cannot be reversed,” said Raikkonen.

1) As to how things evolved with the car I am not totally sure, but the person who had a front seat was Chris Dyer. In the following quote, he is reflecting on 2008 season.

“We had a tough and hard season but Kimi did exactly the right thing within the team and everyone respected what he did and how he reacted to this situation. We had a fantastic car but unfortunately we made mistakes when thinking about what’s best for our driver (Raikkonen).”

I believe the "situation" he is talking about is the Ferrari corporate decision to support Massa – not exactly sure when, but possibly Sep 24. (Kimi was told that they have to let Massa contest the 2008 championship because they are stuck with this request from Santander).

bit is referring to Michael Schumacher, because Michael wanted Massa to be the official feedback/debrief driver sometime around Monaco. I think all of Michael’s initiatives were well intentioned organizational efficiency related enhancements trying to help Ferrari without favoring any driver but because he was closer to Massa probably Massa benefited more from them.

The other issue was the infamous suspension change that was introduced mid-season, again by Michael's planning and directives. It was a unilateral action by him as he was trying to improve the car.

If you recall, recently Kimi said there was only one person at Ferrari he did not like… he did not name that person but I believe it is Michael, because Michael was officially in charge of the car. I think he was/is on good terms with Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo (LdM) because he understood the Ferrari business situation that he could not control but Michael was in charge of something (the car itself) he has been used to controlling all his career. In any event, this area – Michael’s role — needs more research because it is mostly opinions. I suspect Dyer will talk or imply after his departure mid year.

It is Ahrar al-sham that pundits and observers of the war would primarily point to in highlighting that the revolution was not “moderate”

The sudden influx of rebel factions to the area from other parts of the country has destabilized it greatly (more than it ever was when it was al nusra/jabhat fatah al sham versus the FSA and Ahrar al-sham), where a new “Tahrir” titled faction sprouts up every other month and some even fight over it, as was the case between HTS (Tahrir al-Sham) and JTS (Jabhat Tahrir Suriya) when they began hostilities in February 2018 the day after the formation of JTS, lasting until late April. Al Zenki was especially called out by HTS, saying Zenki a little bitch betrayer of the revolution who wouldnt come to sharia court for a laundry list of shit like sending YPG recruits against HTS and killing HTS leaders. JTS in response produced a slur for the HTS akin to the one produced for the Islamic State, Daesh. The JTS now calls the HTS “Hitish”

The Al Qaeda dominated salafist HTS (Tahrir al-Sham, Syrian/Levant Liberation Front) exerts the most influence in Idlib besides the JTS (Jabhat Tahrir Suriya, Syrian Liberation Front), who are second in power and influence.

Anyway, back to the article topic, this recent announcement of the growth of JTS into a new faction includes FSA factions like Jaish Al-Izzah (Army of Glory) who online mujahideen and rebel fanboys saw as being treacherous for not joining other perpetually disorganized FSA groups in their 11 group merger late last month into Jabhat al-Wataniya lil-Tahrir (National Front for Liberation) aka NFL, lol

This is notable because NFL is squarely a Turkish coordinated effort to bang much of the remaining FSA brigades together into a proxy army. The NFL includes Faylaq al-sham, which is an extremely close proxy of Turkey as it not only participated in the “Euphrates Shield” operation to capture Al Bab from the Islamic State, but also the Turkish invasion of Afrin as one of the frontline FSA proxies in the offensive there to conquer YPG held afrin canton. What’s more, Faylaq al-sham’s leader, Colonel Fadlallah al-Haji, is now the overall commander of the newly formed NFL, meaning that the primary FSA faction in Idlib is squarely in the pocket of Turkey

So with that in mind, here’s the situation in Idlib:

So, if it isn’t clear yet, Turkey is intent on asserting it’s influence over Idlib. Most of these observation posts rest on JTS or FSA/NFL held territory. As the article states, Turkey is entering the next phase of forming the “service reality, civil life and military structure” of Idlib province. Turkey gives support to JTS but NFL is wholly their project as part of a grander vision to coordinate the rebellion akin to how they ran shit in the Euphrates Shield and Afrin operations.

All in all, the absolute state of Idlib is as follows, ranked by strength:

1. Tahrir al-Sham, aka HTS

The independent al qaeda affiliate which is the recent amalgamation with lesser groups from previous iterations such as Jabhat Fateh al-sham, Jabhat al Nusra before it and indeed, al Qaeda in Iraq. Important perennial note: AQI split into al nusra and ISIS, the islamic state, so we can say that HTS is the radical islam faction in Idlib. There is a reason why JTS, an islamist salafist organization in their own right, calls HTS “criminal” and derisively as “HITISH” as Syrian rebels previously called ISIS “DAESH”

2. Jabhat Tahrir Suriya, aka JTS

The gulf state supported JTS is a formation of the successful salafi islamist factions of the revolution who split from the free syrian army early on, like 2013. They include the various forces who were dumped into Idlib over the last year and a half by syrian government green buses after the SAA managed to kick their barrel bomb wounded asses out of urban centres like Aleppo and Damascus. As such, JTS was bolstered with veterans of acute urban warfare against the elite Tiger Forces and Hezbollah. This is partly why JTS made immediate gains against HTS when hostilities erupted last february.

3. Jabhat al-Wataniya lil-Tahrir, aka NFL

This is the most recent merger, third smallest coalition in Idlib and wholly Turkish coordinated Free Syrian Army proxy. There ain’t much left to say besides that they have many conventionally named free syrian army components like 1st Infantry Division, 1st coastal division, 23rd Division and other cutesy AHHH SOUNDS MODERATE ENOUGH TO ME titles to a western listener even though many of them have committed war crimes such as the looting and selling of civliian property to Turkish black markets, the indiscriminate shelling of civilians within Aleppo particularly in Sheikh Maqsoud, an isolated Kurdish suburb of the city under neutral YPG control. In spite of this, many parts of the NFL pledge a moderate form of ideology such as “Islamic Democracy” or even “Syrian nationalism” as is the case with the Free Idlib Army. The 1st coastal division is officially vetted by the United Nations formed “Friends of Syria Group,” so at least within the NFL there are elements that are generally “moderate.”

So in conclusion, Idlib is now shared between the HTS, JTS and NFL with each respectively being radical al qaeda islamism, salafist islamist and moderate islamism to secularism.

But in real terms, that means that Idlib is split between an independent radical islam rebel group known as Al Qaeda in the Levant with hostility for rivals that nobody outside of their group likes and two groups allied with Turkey. With turkish aspirations in the area, it is possible for JTS and NFL to merge, as is likely the goal for Turkey in forming what they have signaled is their personal spit of Syrian land. this will inevitably put Turkey, JTS and NFL on a collision course with HTS to decide who controls Idlib.

There will be blood.
