One of the things I promised my children when we have our own place was that they were going to get a bunk bed. Well, when you got two young kids, they are going to fight over who gets to sleep on top. Then I found this bad boy on Amazon.
Tumblr media
Only problem is that I am just one person with not the strongest hands due to ligament damage. But today, some of my friends showed up, fed me and my children lunch and then built the bed frame for me. Then they said they would build my bed frame too. The first bed that is just mine in almost 4 years. A bed instead of a 2 inch foam camper mat on the floor in the baby's room. A bed where I no longer have to fear for my bodily autonomy.
And I'm just...you gotta understand. These are friends I barely got to see in the last three years because of the pandemic or just life. Or due to my own depression and fear that had been driven into me. But the moment I told them I was leaving my abusive husband and taking the kids and the dog, it was fucking All Hands On Deck.
In the last 2+ months, most of which my children and I were technically homeless and living out of a safehouse, they've been there for me. When we finally got an apartment of our own through housing assistance, they showed up with towels, kitchen stuff and...it's been so overwhelming in the best way possible.
And today I was looking up inspirational quotes about friendship and this one really resonated with me.
“A strong friendship doesn’t need daily conversation, doesn’t always need togetherness, as long as the relationship lives in the heart, true friends will never part.” – Unknown
Because we were apart not just physically but in mind. There was barely even texting. But the love and faith we had for each other never lapsed. For me, and for them, the love never faded because it never came with a price or obligation. We simply cared for each other and there was no expiration date on that.
Everyday is a challenge but we're making progress. Yesterday I got to organize my kitchen cupboards with food and snacks that my kids love. Today we have beds with real bed frames. What will tomorrow bring? It's terrifying but so incredibly exciting.
And I wouldn't be here if not for my friends, my found family. Because my biological family are 4 time zones away in another country and although we love each other, they can't be here right now. But that's okay. Because I'm blessed with wonderful friends here and also online. Ironically, these "in real life" friends started off as online friends.
So I say to everyone, if you've actually read this far, please cherish your friends. But most importantly, know that distance, time, and the lack of words are nothing in the face of deep seated love and devotion. When the time comes, when you need them, they will be there in your hearts.

My Doodle Director took this WIP photo of my next wimmelbilder! You can see my ink outline to the right, first depth pass on the chimney, and the left is how I plan for all of it to look with the shading and texture.
I love the tiny owls I did.

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."
Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.
These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!
Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!
Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.
So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.

In light of increasing anti-trans and anti-abortion laws in the United States, I am once again humbly requesting you inform yourself about jury nullification, your ability as a juror to vote against convicting people being prosecuted under unjust laws. Nullification was instrumental in legalizing abortion in Canada - it informed jurors can use it to help protect healthcare workers and protesters in the US, too.

"But if college was free, then people would abuse that and get useless degrees" hell yeah I would! If I could go to college without debt I would make it my job to get a degree in every little thing that interested me. I'd get a doctorate in film studies. I'd have a bachelor's degree for every science I like. I'd try to learn at least 5 languages with varying results. I would learn something "useful" like coding and then follow it up with a ""useless"" degree like art history. I'd be the world record speed run holder for getting every degree possible.
But I can't afford college without going into massive debt, so instead I spent the last 5 years trying to figure out what I am passionate enough about to consider going into debt over, because unfortunately being passionate about everything is extremely expensive to pursue.
