so this year I ~challenged myself to post a gifset once a week, because making gifsets is something I enjoy very much and can always improve in but literally cannot do for money or lbr meaningful validation and I am historically bad at doing things that fit those categories!

I ended up posting 54 gifsets in 2023, one a week plus a few extras lol. A few stats behind the cut just for fun!

Most popular overall: "I'm so glad I met you" with 1,738 as of this morning. Objectively correct. The nicest-looking gifs I maybe made all year and an all-time scene. Made it my pinned post recently.

Least popular overall: A Community set of Jeff making a Dane Cook joke, coming in at a grand total of 39 notes. This was actually a remake of a set I made YEARS ago because I think it's a great joke lmao. A set doomed imo by the youths on my lawn not knowing who Dane Cook is and also tbf Jeff as the only featured study group character.

Honorable mention to the Rangers World Series set I made, but I'm actually floored and delighted that it got 43 notes. There are dozens of us!!

Most popular fandom: Leverage with an average of 837 notes across 2 posts, both of which were Hardison/Parker, so...

Most popular fandom not inflated by Hardison/Parker: Doctor Who by a mile with an average of 775 notes per post. Feels good. Feels right. We're back baybee

Interesting split of 18 shippy sets and 36 non-shippy. Including "outliers," shippy sets averaged 621 notes compared to an average of 332 for gen sets. Throwing out the two lowest note-getting posts from each set, the averages jump to 680 and 350. Also not a surprise; fandom loves a ship lol.

Some one-off fandom set thoughts:

The Dr. Cox set was a mostly-for-me fave. The Always Sunny set happened because I thought the Aaron Paul/Bryan Cranston episode was one of the funniest the show has had in years; that episode was also what finally pushed me into watching Breaking Bad this year, which I mostly really enjoyed lol.

The set I made from the finale of The Bear s2 ended up the sixth most popular set of the year with 1k+ notes and it's probably the set I most notice on my activity page every week. It does look really nice but also, I see you, Syd/Richie fandom, and I hear your siren song. Maybe in 2024...

So OK! Hey! I set a meaningless fun goal and accomplished it!! I'm not setting another specific gif goal for 2024 so will probably be a lot more sporadic. Or not! Who knows!

4. a creation that took you forever this lonely st han animation i did for ale's bday took a while to draw all the frames (but sooooo worth it ofc 💖🌷) ...and i also tend to put a lot of effort into my 1-gif posts like this the boyz gif (mostly spent cutting colors to get the file size down while keeping so many frames) and this mingyu gif (literally spliced ✂️ images from a screenshot of his photo gallery and turned them into animation frames) and this jeno gif (manually blurred the bg of each frame to fake looking HD bc i didnt have the ts file 😭) and this dojaewoo gif (erased the caption from each frame but if u look closely above their heads u will see the books are shimmering like a mirage bc they ARE a mirage LOL)

Hi, I really love your andor gifset from September 28 2022 (idk if I can post a link so... but it's from the first episode) and I was wondering if you could maybe give me some tips on how to make it so clear and vibrant even when the picture is big? I have just started gif-making a few days ago and I definitely want to aspire to make such great gifs.

Hi there!!!! Firstly tysmmm 🥺 i really had a fun time making those big gif andor episode sets i think they all turned out great!

I did make a tutorial a while back mostly focusing on how I sharpen my gifs. My steps mostly the same as they were here except I now export gifs using "adaptive & diffusion"

The Andor gifsets you called out I did use 4K SDR videos. But I don't always think 4K is necessary (especially where r we gunna get them now rip rarbg), 1080p is always preferred and if you're d*wnl*ding / t*rr*nting i would recommend trying to pick the larger file size, for example choosing a movie thats 5GB over 1.5GB.

In my last tutorial I didn't really go into how I colour my gifs but that's where the biggest changes come into place. I don't use a set preset/psd, I colour each gifset uniquely but I do have the same order of steps generally. My order of adjustment layers tends to be: Levels, Curves, Selective Colour, Vibrancy. I also frequently use Channel Mixer and Hue/Saturation when needed. Below the cut I'll share my "starting" settings for some of the adjustments layers but these often change as the gif needs.

I hope this is somewhat helpful!! I think with practice and more gifing you'll find your own style and process. I look back at gifs I made a year ago and think oooof haha what was I doing back then. constant improvements & always finding new tricks♥️ I would also recommend following some gif resources blogs like @usergif or @pscentral they often post really helpful tutorials & tricks to help make your gifmaking the best it can be!

Levels - I tend to start with the default "Increase Contrast 1" or "Increase Contrast 2" depending on how dark the intial scene is. When making aditional adjustments I focus on the end sliders - the dark & light, and barely ever touch the midtones adjustment, if i do use it I go very subtly so 1.05 or 0.95. Our goal in the end is to make the darkest parts of the gif black & the lightest parts almost white.

Curves - imo curves makes the biggest adjustment for the gif colouring. shes my best friend! So again I focus on the dark/light eye droppers. I start with the white eyedropper and select something white or the lightest part of the gif, then go to the black eye dropper selecting a very dark portion of the gif. Then in the middle section I adjust the curves line (white line) to meet the needs of the gif for proper contrast / brightness. If needed Ill open the RGB drop down (red arrow) and adjust specific colours. I use the Blue the most as i often see alot of yellow tint in movies (which i hate lol) so ill bring the top end of the blue line closer to the centre of the grid to reduce the yellowness. Sometimes ill make a second curves layer, set the preset to "linear contrast" then adjust the sliders as needed, this often gives additional contrast & brightness.

Selective Colour - my second best friend! this is where you can make little adjustments to the hues of the gif, then fine tweak the darkness/brightness in the gif. So below i have my "starting points" in the white, natural & black colours. Often the white ends up being a much lower number (-40 or less) and in the neutrals area i can fine tune the overall hue of the gif - reduce the yellows or increase the reds etc. This tool is alot of playing around with and just seeing what looks good!

Vibrance - this is normally the last layer ill add. I barely change the settings I tend to go with 20-30 Vibrance and then 2-5 on Saturation. Just gives add extra vibrancy and colour pop. Saturation stays a bit on the lower side as often bringing it makes peoples skin tone too orange/red/yellow etc. But if I want over saturation increase on particular colours I'll make those adjustments with a Hue/Saturation layer.

3. Do you anticipate writing for a new fandom this year? Which one?

No, I don't think so. Unless I find another open world/ sandbox game to get attached to... I find it quite difficult to write for properties where the story is already all laid out and there's no 'gaps' to exploit.

8. Is there a story idea in your mental vault that you’ve never been brave enough to try writing? Is this the year? Can you tell us about it?

I don't know about 'not brave enough' - more like 'never gotten around to it', so perhaps this is the year. In The Ruby Falls, the Modern AU of TES: Oblivion, the Hero of Kvatch gets a massive slash on her back which scars and she hates. The fic would revolve around her going to some shindig, only the high-backed dress she planned has somehow been swapped for a low-back dress. There's panic, there's tears, there's a fix and all is well and the shindig continues, possibly with her acceptance of the scar.

11. Would you like to try any new fanfic genres or tropes this year?

I keep thinking it would be funny to isekai one OC into a different universe I already write for, ie Mio (fish alien) from Starbound into the TES universe.

I'd also like to try a proper songfic.

13. Aside from fanfic, are there any other fan works you’d like to try creating? Fanart, or fanvids, gifsets, or podfic?

I need to get back to recording my podfics. I might also offer/ ask to podfic some others' works.

Sadly I'm not really good at visual arts - the most I can manage are moodboards. I have been tempted to do a stick-figure outline for a comic script I wrote, but I need to finish it first 😅

18. Do you typically post multi-chapters as you write, or finish it all and then start posting? Would you like to change your posting method?

I have tried posting multi-chapters as I go, and discovered that's a bad flow for me - I often want to go back and edit previous chapters, but I feel that's unfair to anyone who's already read it. So now I prefer making sure I'm happy with a work as a whole and then posting in one go. (Although, for The Ruby Falls, it's been suggested that I post on a schedule once the whole thing has been finished - apparently that's reader-preferred for works over 150k?)

24. By the end of this year, you want your fandom to think of you as “that author who _______.”

Bonus 1: what's your favorite thing about the Starbound and Elder Scrolls universes?

In TES, it's the scenery. All the (modernish) TES games are just so, so pretty 😊 My housemate likes to call Oblivion 'horse-riding simulator', because I do have a habit of just trotting around, exploring.

In Starbound, it's actually a game mechanic that I like best. If you build a house and put a deed down, it'll spawn in a tenant. If you build lots of houses, the tenants interact with each other, making little emotes. I just think it's really cute 😄 (and fun to write about).

Bonus 2: what's a favorite lore tidbit from both universes?

In TES, it's that the world is effectively one big lucid dream.

In Starbound, it's that the Glitch (robot people) were created as a simulation and were intended to progress through various stages of industrialization, but the creator left? died? and the Glitch got stuck in a pseudo-medieval state and have never progressed beyond that.

scotland and brazil sound amazing! one of my friends went to study in scotland and after she graduated from college, she decided to stay and work there instead of coming back to my hometown. i have always dreamed about traveling all over the world. the most recent destination i put on my wish list is madeira island. 🦋

i’m glad you’re better but just in case, pls know that you always come first.

mind you, i haven’t watched a lot, i have just started so i don’t have favourites yet. but i’ll mention the last ones i watched and maybe they seem of interest to you: “american nightmare”, “keep sweet”, and “escaping twin flames”. check out the warnings though, they deal with heavy topics.

i completely understand you bc it’s how i always feel when writing a fic, i want everything to be perfect, but we’re humans and we’re not perfect. the best thing we can do is just enjoy the process. i know you can’t tell me too much 🤭 but ask yourself what are you most excited to write abt and then write it (a first kiss? a conflict? the end?). it may help you to see with clarity where your story is going. like, i stopped working on my wip for several days bc i can’t seem to write any descriptions but yesterday i was like “what if i just write the dialogues and leave the rest for later?” and that’s what i did, so now i’m excited to keep working on the dialogues and i can add the descriptions later, or change them as the story goes idk. and maybe i’m just biased but to me you’re amazing, and i’m sure your story will be too bc you’re the one writing it. <3

as for the “check-in”, i think they just want to make sure that the person is working on the gift bc if i remember correctly, the creation period marks until february 13th which means you have until pretty much the very last minute to finish everything. i’m so nervous abt it bc it seems so close now but i’m sure we both can do it! 😁

seeing louis was everything i needed and more tbh! i feel that’s why i was extra motivated yesterday. just seeing him makes me extremely happy 🤧

madeira island sounds amazing! i just googled it and it looks like a great place to visit. i hope you get the chance to do it!

ooooof, i hope i don’t bore you with this lol. when i first joined the fandom, i met a person (i won’t name them out of respect bc it’s a unique name and maybe they don’t want ppl to know, they’re not in the fandom anymore) who knew how to make gifs and graphics. i felt like i wasn’t contributing to fandom anything bc the only thing i did was reblogging (which btw that’s already doing so much in this era where no one wants to reblog anything), so i asked this person if they could teach me how to make them. i started with graphics bc it was easier for me to work with pictures and stuff, and once i get the hang of it, i started with gifs. the first ones i made were of louis saying “soccer” for the usaians benefit 🤧 but anyway, even before starting making gifs, i was in a gc with a lot of gifmakers and they were very welcoming but i felt alien being the only one who didn’t know what they were talking abt when they were complaining abt frames, and quality, and colouring 🫠 i have to thank A LOT of ppl in the fandom who used to make tutorials, share their colouring tips, and just in general were very supportive. none of them is in the fandom anymore but you can still see their gifs around heheh. i know i’m not the fastest one making them, but i still feel proud of the quality and the colouring in my gifs <3

i have a question for you! if louis was an actor, what kind of movie would you like him to be in? 🤩

i have only been to london once but i was 5 and all i remember is visiting the london eye and getting stuck on it but my mum always talks about how you can go to london and spend your entire wage in one day no matter how much you make 😂😂 bc it's THAT expensive

i've never really been that much into shinee, i got into kpop in 2010 so i was only ever listening to beast and girls generation at the time. i liked shinee's songs but i never got to know them until 2017 and when he passed away, it broke me </3 i miss him every day :(

iz*one were a girl group who were on a reality show called produce 48, they disbanded last year and then a few girls were put into other groups. wonyoung in ive, and i think two of them are in le sserafim, and a few went solo. their discography was amazing :((( would recommend songs; secret story of the swan, up and panorama 💞💞💞

oof reminds me of the time i went to nyc back in 2019. literally had to call my parents for extra money (which they thankfully gave) in the end since the money i saved from work wasn't enough. admittedly, i also used that money for food while i was living on campus (dining hall was fine actually, but i liked ordering chinese takeout when i needed it since it'd last me a few days). everythings so expensive in nyc i sob. the bagels were banger tho and every day i think abt the breakfast bagel my friend and i had...

i get that! i think i've mentioned it before that i used to be into shinee (primarily--altho i did listen to some girls generation at the time) back in like... 2014 since i found sherlock, but dropped my interest in kpop entirely because people in my life were shitty. i didn't find out about him until last year, and i think i decided to commit myself harder to loving shinee to like... make up for the lost time and because i feel like i owe it to jonghyun to appreciate his music now and to love all of shinee (including him).

I do plan to at some point go back and finish the sets, but there's a large amount of reasons why I am taking a break from them.

I'm burnt out on NoPixel rn. Most days lately, I just watch Toretti and that's it. I'll turn Siz on for background noise/chat points too since I'm more than halfway to the Inner Circle perk, and I have a p large watch streak with Nova.

Work is fucking me up. Back at the start of July, the other lady who worked in my section at work retired, and the one they replaced her with doesn't do jack shit, so I've been having to take the extra work and responsibilities on. My section deals with like back to school shit too, so it's been really hectic rn.

I fucked my ankle up again. Last May, I had an accident at work which resulted in me almost breaking my ankle, and I wish it would have just broke so I wouldn't be in pain all the time. Oddly enough, this injury is what led to me finding NoPixel, but that's for another ask. Anyway, I reinjured that same ankle at the end of July, and I've been dealing with that.

I have people claiming I hate women because the only woman I've done so far is Hooker Block, who is played by a man. I had a pretty bulky list of women I wanted to make gifsets for, but a large number of them are either on hiatus themselves and have no vods for me to pull decent clips from, or have quit NoPixel all together for one reason or another. Some of the reasons are pretty oof like one leaving because she was sexually harassed by a user and nothing happened to them after she reported him.

The Penta stuff soured me on NoPixel as a whole. The behavior of some of the players and admins with the whole Penta debacle really just soured me in general. The way the general fanbase and players treated LuckyxMoon, who had a character who I was going to make a set of before she left the server, was absolutely disgusting.

The general bias toward certain players. The overall bias the admins and server owner has for certain groups is absolutely disgusting as well. You had a player who admitted to watching someone else's stream to find them in the server, yet nothing happens to him because the server owner is in his gang. This gang has constant rule breaks that would get anyone else a 30 day/perma by now, but the most they get is 7 days. The only reason why one of the members of their street team got a perma is because someone went to reddit with a full list of receipts and put them on blast for the world to see.

The fanbase is toxic as fuck. This is rich coming from me, I know, but a lot of my toxicity is me just making memes and being stupid in chat which if asked, I do stop. People like Occams' chat for example, are openly toxic. The amount of toxic comments about Metzger, Max, and Bloom during the investigation where TJ shot Bloom for Bundy was disgusting. You had people in Tommy Tinker's chat recently openly calling Vale/Cath a bitch, and the mods were ehhh about it. It's to a point where I don't want to be in the community anymore if this is the standard for chats. I don't feel welcome, and if the hate some of these chats spew out is too much for me, I can only imagine how bad it is for the streamers themselves.

Like I said at the start, I do plan to eventually go back and finish them so I can move on to something else, but I'm just bleh right now when it comes to NoPixel.

Last year, I did a post looking back at some of the j2 moments 2019 and the 2010’s decade had given us, this year with it being so shit and so many of us needing some cheering up I thought I’d do a 2020 version.

So before we say fuck off to 2020 here are some of the j2 moments this year has given us:

SM isn’t everything but it’s still cute when the boys interact with each other online and the year actually started with it, with both boys liking each other’s New Year’s pictures with their kiddos:

When I add that plotline was only in fan fiction, Ackles retorts, "Or was it?" Padalecki erupts in laughter. "There it goes the internet."

In an interview with Chelsea Davis Jensen once again brought up that him and Jared will be contacting each other from their new shows

“Jared said it, he’s like I don’t think it’s really gonna set in until we walk unto the set of some other show. But that’s fine cause then we’ll just turn around and call each other and be like ‘what’s your show like?’”

The last virtual panel of the year was Jared’s and it was full of love for Jensen; Jared mentioned him often, unprompted he shared the story of when the twins were born and how hectic it was for him and Jensen to return to Austin in time for their birth honestly hearing him talk about it it’s clear how important that day was for him too and it’s just so sweet, he said him and Jensen will definitely work together again and he hopes it’ll be sooner rather than later, also said Jensen has a standing invitation to do whatever he wants on Walker, and implied he’s already looked at his schedule to see if he could make it up to Toronto where Jensen will be working in 2021.

And these are just some moments; I know that with everything going on and time losing all meaning it might have seemed like we had a j2-less year but as you can see that’s not true cause not even a pandemic or this hellish year were able to stop or dim the beauty that is j2 and their relationship.

This men make me so ridiculously happy, and with this being such a hard year for all of us, for some more than others, it makes me all that extra grateful for them and to them for bringing a smile to my face. I hope that with this post they will bring a smile to yours. I personally am looking forward to seeing what j2 goodies 2021 gives us, I’m hopeful there’ll be plenty, our boys have new projects coming out, God willing cons will be able to pick up again in a safe way, and there’ll be even more j2 content to enjoy.

A quick Logyn fic I whipped up for @someillplanetreigns xoxox

Fair warning I haven’t watch the Loki tv show, just absorbed it through tumblr gifsets and additional context given by @ladyaudiophile when needed, so I may have gotten a few of the details wrong... but oh well.

Being detained by the TVA was… a lot.

It was difficult to watch his life-that-should-have-been flash before his eyes. So much death and destruction and loss. Was it possible to feel regret over things that hadn’t happened to him yet?

But it had also introduced him to the concepts of Variants; versions of himself from parallel universes. And if there were multiple versions of himself out there in the multiverse, then it would stand to reason that there must be multiple versions of… someone else out there as well. Someone who didn’t feature in Mobius’ little show and tell because she had been taken from him many years ago.

So Loki watched and waited, and when the opportunity presented itself he stole a TemPad and escaped through a time door. He found himself in an unfamiliar place, but one that was thankfully free of TVA agents, so he quickly figured out how to properly use the TemPad and was able to find his way to times and places he hoped he might find… the person he had lost.

The first version of her he found was standing steadfast in a dark cave, holding a bowl over his other self’s head to help bear a punishment that wasn’t hers.

The second he found in a rather similar version of Asgard, stoically suffering through his other self’s repeated infidelities and cruel taunts.

The third was a half-mad sorceress ruling over the ruins of some form of Midgard beside his mad king self.

He should have tried to save one of them, but knowing her as he did, she wouldn’t have left her lover’s side. Goddess of Fidelity indeed.

What he needed was to find a version of her that had lost, or would never meet, that universe’s version of Loki. He tried twice more with no luck, and the next door after that was a long shot. He found himself on a version of Midgard, some thousand years before his last visit. He quickly changed his appearance to better fit in with the local populace. His TVA issued shirt, pants, and tie were replaced with trousers of some undyed local woven material and a dark green woolen tunic. There was a chill in the air so he threw a wolf pelt around his shoulders for some extra warmth and drama.

As he wandered through the large fishing village in search of her he was still getting too many stares, and as he glanced around he figured it must have been because of his hair - he saw not one person with hair as dark as his. He slipped behind the nearest hut and with a shake of his head his dark hair turned a fiery red (something he’d seen on one of his alternate selves) and continued through the village with only the normal amount of stares one would expect of a newcomer in their midst.

Half an hour of trudging later he had yet to catch sight of the woman he sought. He had hoped to keep a low profile, but he was also impatient and a tad desperate, so asked the next person he came across if they knew of her.

“You mean the healer?” they replied and Loki breathed a sigh of relief. They gave him vague directions to a hut on the outskirts of the village, where the sea met the forests, and it took all of Loki’s self restraint not to race there.

As he approached the small hut a woman stepped outside to pick herbs from her garden and he knew it was her. Her clothes were simple and unadorned, and her long hair was pulled back in a knot of braids, but it was her.

“Sigyn.”

The lost love of his life turned, not believing her eyes. But then her surprise turned to fear.

“Loki!” she hissed, pulling him into her house, away from prying eyes. “What are you doing here? If Odin finds you here he’ll kill me and punish you!”

Loki could have wept with joy regardless. “You know me?”

“What? Of course I know you, even with that strange disguise,” she snapped, waving a hand at his red hair.

Loki shook it out with a smile, returning it to its usual black.

“But you know me? You grew up in Asgard? ...You love me?”

Sigyn blinked her beautiful eyes, eyes so similar to the ones he missed, and regarded him curiously.

“Yes, I know you, and of course I love you,” she replied slowly, pulling away from him. “ But you speak as though you don’t know me.”

“I do not know this version of you,” he answered honestly. “What do you know of a multiverse? Other worlds where things may only be slightly different to what you know, or vary wildly?”

“As much as you, I suppose. We read the same books after all. At least my version of Loki and I did. You are truly not the Loki I knew?”

Loki shook his head sadly. “In my world, the Sigyn I knew… the Sigyn I loved… When Odin discovered our relationship he all but forced her to marry another. It was not a happy marriage, nor a long one. In my world you have been dead for many, many years.”

“It was Theoric wasn’t it?” she asked with wet eyes. Loki nodded. “My mother always did like him,” she huffed.

“What happened to you in this universe? Did Odin banish you here?”

Sigyn nodded. “It’s been a hundred years now.”

“And your Loki… he never came for you?”

“No,” she sighed. “He stood by while Odin made his decree. He spouted a lot of rot about the duties as a prince of Asgard, and my Loki craved his father’s approval so badly… You know something about his inner conflict?” she guessed from the guilty look on his face.

“I should have fought harder for my Sigyn. But I’m here now, and we are both without our other halves… and I have this handy little device with just enough power left to transport us to some other place and time,” he added with a mischievous smile, magically manifesting the stolen TemPad. “Wherever we go we will be stuck there, for better or worse. And the people I stole this from may still be hunting me down.”

“Sounds like an adventure,” Sigyn replied with a smile. “And if you’re anything like the Loki I knew, you should know exactly where I want to go,” she teased.

Loki played along, humming as he pulled up a location on the TemPad. “If you’re anything like the Sigyn I knew, the one place you would want to go… would be to the northern plateaus of the Valdemarsta Mountains on Alfheim, just in time for the Stjarna Festival, where we can drink and dance all night long… and come dawn be handfasted as violet meteorites streak across the sky.”

Sigyn fell into his arms and kissed him. Loki kissed her back like he’d missed her every day for a thousand years.

“You’ll do,” she sighed happily.

“I would hope so. We’re both quite lucky to have found each other; there are some strange versions of us out there in the multiverse. In one, you were this great, hulking beast of a warrior and I was your rather scrawny but very willing love slave. And in another… I was an alligator. I have no idea what became of you in that particular universe, I was rather too afraid to ask.”

Sigyn laughed and let Loki hold her close as he called up one last time door.

“Once we step through there’s no turning back. Are you sure you wish to come with me?”

“Given a choice I would stay by your side. Surely that is the same across the multiverse, even the one with the alligators.”

Loki smiled and took her hand. “Together then?”

“Always.”

Content warning: Ana and Taylor are in this fic, but as friends. They are not dating buddie

The Other Two Halves of My Heart

“So, a skateboard was a hard no, but surfing is a yes?” Ana remarked to Eddie from her spot next to him on the sand, a teasing twinkle in her eye.

Eddie smiled, eyes not moving from the two distant figures revolving in each other’s orbit as they slowly wove their way toward them through the water. “Buck said he’d find a way. And he did.” The look on his face was impossibly fond.

“He does that.” Taylor observed from Ana’s other side with a smile. She was sitting on her own towel, wearing the world’s largest sun hat and an emerald green bathing suit that did wonders for her figure and offset her firey red hair.

The last date Eddie and Ana had gone on before breaking up had been a double date with Buck and Taylor--though Buck and Taylor had attended as friends--and the two sharp and accomplished women had glomped onto each other almost as soon as their eyes met. It began the first of many Friend Double Dates between the four, with Christopher coming along as the world’s best fifth wheel--including today’s outing to the beach.

That first double date had changed a lot between the four. In addition to Eddie and Ana deciding to be just friends, Ana and Taylor had exchanged phone numbers and had started messaging back and forth almost as soon as the party had stepped out of the restaurant. In each other the women found fast companionship, someone else who understood what it was like to aim for the stars instead of building a family in your twenties. Taylor loved Ana’s gentle approach, her patience, and her wise council that came as an advantage of being a few years older than Taylor. Ana loved Taylor’s wit, her sharp eye, and the way she wasn’t afraid to say what she was thinking. Late nights of red wine, tacos, and reruns of Project Runway had solidified a strong, supportive friendship that they were both quickly forgetting how to live without.

They had also taken to talking about the two beautiful men who had brought them together. Comparing just a few notes brought Ana and Taylor into complete agreement:

Eddie and Buck were downright stupid for each other.

It was the way Eddie ordered a meal that Buck enjoyed and split plates with him so Buck wouldn’t have to decide between two of his favorite entrees at the Chinese place they’d all eaten at last weekend. It was in the way Buck showed up without question on the tail end of a 48 hour shift to take care of Christopher and Eddie when Eddie caught a bad cold a few weeks ago. (He’d called Taylor in a panic, asking her if she could run to the pharmacy for a few items. Taylor had asked Ana to step in since she was busy covering a story downtown.)

And it was here, in the way Eddie looked at Buck like Buck hung the moon and all the stars, in the way Buck had sat Eddie down in a comfortable spot in the sand (”God knows you don’t need the extra tan, you’re gorgeous, but relax for a minute while us professionals do the surfing, ‘kay?”) and pulled Christopher and their surfboards toward the water for some fun.

Ana and Taylor exchanged glances, then Ana nodded and Taylor whipped out her phone to get a shot of Buck and Christopher hitting the waves with Eddie in the foreground looking utterly whipped. It would be hard to get all three in the photo and camera angles were definitely Taylor’s expertise.

Taylor had barely gotten the shot in when Eddie rose suddenly. “Do you mind if I...?” He gestured vaguely toward the beach where the sounds of Buck’s rich laughter and Christopher’s sunny giggles reached them on the wind.

“You go right ahead, Edmundo.” Ana said with a chuckle.

Eddie was already walking, but he nodded distractedly and picked up his pace, feet bearing through the sand to reach where his heart was already standing.

“Dad! Dad, did you see that?! That wave was huge!” Christopher yelled excitedly as Eddie approached. Next to Chris, Buck chuckled. After almost an hour on the water, Chris was starting to tire, and was holding onto Buck for support.

“You killed it, Chris! Man, I’ve gotten rusty since my time in Peru, you were basically holding us together there.”

Christopher laughed again and leaned harder into Buck, throwing an arm around his waist where he could reach. “You were okay, kid.”

This set off Buck, who started to giggle as well, wiping his wet hair out of his eyes. Eddie could only stand in front of the two and watch. He couldn’t completely parse out what he was feeling, but he was full of it, and it was warm and soft, but also deep and intense and--

“Eddie, you alright?” Suddenly Buck was right in front of him. He reached out and laid a hand gently on Eddie’s forehead. “You look kind of out of it. Too much sun?”

“No.” Eddie’s voice wobbled, and he cleared his throat. “No, I’m--I’m good. Hell, I’m great.” He suddenly couldn’t keep the smile off his face, felt light and drunk with it. “You guys are staying hydrated, right?” He raised his own hand to Buck, but somehow it found it’s way to the side of Buck’s face, cupping his damp cheek. Buck’s smile widened and he leaned into it with a happy sigh as Eddie’s thumb stroked softly over the light stubble that had grown over the course of the day.

“Yeah, we’re good.” Buck’s smile grew shy and he ducked his head down, focusing on Chris. “Hey, buddy, what say you take a quick break and I try to get your dad out there, huh? Show him how the professionals do it?”

Chris’ eyes lit up and a mischevous smile spread slowly over his face. “You want to try, Dad?”

“Yes.” Eddie knew it was a sucker’s game, letting Buck get him on a board, but at that moment, he didn’t care. He only knew that here was where he felt complete, where that full-of-warmth feeling stayed. They could’ve asked him to follow them into an undertow and he would’ve gone.

Buck held out a hand to him, the shy smile now edged with happiness. And Eddie took it.

“When they finally get a clue, they’re going to thank us for documenting all their most romantic moments for them.” Ana observed as she pulled out a container of fruit and lifted a piece of cantaloupe to Taylor’s mouth.

Taylor chuckled around the fruit, hands busy holding up her phone camera just so. “They’d better. I don’t usually document shit for free.” She snapped a few more shots of Buck and Eddie falling all over each other in the surf before putting her phone down and turning toward Ana. “Now that we have some time to ourselves, tell me more about that incompetent substitute teacher you dealt with on Friday?”

I only realized last week, there’s only 7 episodes this series because the eighth would have been the Asriel centric one. So only two left now after tonight! :(

So Mrs Coulter was denied a doctorate despite being the best in her class because she’s a woman, and they would only have published her papers if they were by a man. I’m starting to see why she got upset when she met Mary, who’s got her own office and a doctorate and is head of the department/project

The way that Lyra saw her mum and immediately tried to run away though, she just keeps trying to yeet herself away from her parents and I honestly don’t blame her at all

Boreal was being truly extra in the way he dropped his snake dæmon out of his sleeve like that whilst advancing on Will

“Why would I trust you?” TRUTH

Coulter saying for Lyra to stay away from Will and getting super teary eyed makes me think she’s worried Lyra will suffer like she did? Like she’s worried that Lyra will suffer at the hands of men and be in the same situation she was I think? And that’s so sad but nuanced

“I am NOTHING like you.”

So Lyra did this little head move like Marisa did in 1x02, when she made the monkey attack Pan to subdue Lyra - AND THEN PAN ATTACKED THE MONKEY JUST LIKE THAT, LITERALLY EXACTLY THE SAME, AND MRS COULTER FALLING TO THE FLOOR AND CLUTCHING THE SOFA LIKE LYRA DID?? AND LYRA WATCHING WITH THIS COLD LOOK ON HER FACE?!

SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE A COMPARISON GIFSET BECAUSE IM CRYING

I love Will getting mad at Boreal taunting him over his mum, and immediately starting to punch him

HE SMASHED THAT COLLECTION PIECE ON BOREAL’S HEAD FUCK YEAH WILL 👏🏻

That was a DAMN close escape, holy fuck, but she’s got the Alethiometer back!

“The man who hurt you, I wanted to kill him” - same Lyra

I was so emotional when she was talking about how Marisa used her dæmon to hurt her and Pan, and Will saying that he’s never worried about his mum hurting him... the comparison is so sad

“I hope I’m not like either of my parents” - I mean I don’t blame her tbh

SHE CONSIDERED MA COSTA AND LEE SCORESBY TO BE BETTER PARENT FIGURES TO BE LIKE I’M CRYING

So Mrs Coulter is definitely planning some shit, like she didn’t seem that concerned when Boreal was talking about the Spectres, and like obviously I know what happens but I’ve always been intrigued as to why the Spectres listen to her instead of just attacking her. Also is it something to do with her dæmon? Like if they ARE separated in some way, maybe the Spectres don’t feed on her because it’s Dust or something? (Idk if that makes any sense)

“Deceive the guardian... okay... okay...” honestly same XD

Mary pretending to be Mrs Coulter to get past the guard is such a brilliant idea, like she just ran with it immediately, we have to stan a Queen who keeps a calm head

SHE WENT THROUGH THE WINDOW AND INTO THE CITY AAAAHHHH

The angels said they’d protect her, right? So she doesn’t need to fear the Spectres I’m assuming (I need to assume or I’ll worry)

The promo for next week was literally half what we saw THIS week and half Lee/John Parry footage I’m assuming is next week... ?

The fact there’s only two episodes left makes me so sad :( I have no idea what I’ll do waiting for the final series - and I’m assuming it’ll be delayed maybe because of Covid. Plus I’m hoping we get the extra episode NEXT series, the one that was Asriel-centred and supposed to be in this one but wasn’t filmed because of Coronavirus, so fingers crossed! 🤞
