collider OFMD article
My comment on the article
Lack of communication is the hallmark and fulcrum of all sitcoms and romcoms. While this show breaks out of any neat category, even defying the round holes of “comedy” or “drama”, it still uses many of the tropes. Like many romcoms, the issues arise from lack of communication. If they were able to just “talk it through, as a crew” so much would be solved, the show would be 2 episodes, and we could all go home.
As it stands, this is one of the best shows that television has to offer. I experience every emotion all at once. The performances by Rhys Darby, Taika Waititi, and Con O’Neill as well as every supporting cast member and even extras, are stellar. It’s one of the shows one can watch repeatedly and see new things every time. There are so many parallels and contrasts, contradictions and conundrums, it becomes an exciting Easter egg hunt.
David Jenkins and his writing team expertly weave in many historical elements, but play fast and loose with them.
While there are many flaws to season 2, they still pulled off a great feat.
I’ll definitely be enjoying this show for years to come.
I doubt it will be renewed, but I can hope. Shows this good seem to puzzle tv execs and they can’t wait to sabotage them no matter how popular they are.
As far as Stede and Ed being meant for each other…
Did you really write that title un-ironically?
In real life, Stede and Blackbeard fell out after a puzzling alliance, and things didn’t end well for them. If Jenkins follows that, ultimately the series would end on a downbeat instead of having the couple run off to Vermont and start a B&B.

dp x dc prompt #32!
Danny moves to Gotham, but instead of his ghostliness unsettling people and drawing attention to him, it’s the fact that he’s so openly nice to people.
He’s helping people in a way that most people have been too scared to do for a very long time, and people definitely take notice when nothing immediately bad happens, and he keeps up the same as he always has with no foul schemes in sight.
Danny’s handed out food to people that needed it, stepped into disputes before they even got violent, picked up strays off the streets and taken them to places they could live better, stopped various muggings single handedly, and even assisted the paramedics and evac teams during large scale disasters.
While the bats didn’t have a real reason to investigate this force of uncontained kindness, they did strike up conversations when they happened across the same trouble, and were very fond of the teenager that seemed to wander the streets at all hours.
So of course everyone notices when the unconventionally friendly kid disappears, with the evidence linking him to a shadowy branch of the government.

I’m more than happy to treat/categorise alcohol as a drug, but whenever I talk about addiction I have to explicitly say “drugs, including alcohol” or “alcohol and other drugs” because most people don’t implicitly include it + language is about communication etc. but lord. I feel like the line that is drawn between “alcohol” and “drug” does not help the “addiction hierarchy” situation
anyway this is my regular reminder to my fellow alcoholics that we are in fact drug addicts and we are not fundamentally any better than any other addict just because our substance is legal and slightly more normalised. this is also my regular reminder to people without substance abuse disorders that alcohol being a drug does not justify treating alcoholics like shit, because all addicts are human beings and you should treat us as such. peace and love

Dc x dp idea 18
Ghost are the embodiment of what they represent. An example skulker is the embodiment of hunting. Without skulker no one could hunt. It just doesn’t exist anymore.
In this a dc villain captures amorpho in order to find out hero’s identities. The villain has to figure out how to utilize amorpho. He’s only managed to trap him using tech from the fentons.
Danny cannot find him amorpho in time. The villain manages to take away disguise from everyone but himself. For Danny it’s not as big of a problem as it is for every other hero.
Danny has two whole separate identities not so much a disguise. (He transforms not just throws on a mask. Same would apply to captain marvel)
This leads to a pre teen and a teenager both pretending to be mature trying to find amorpho. They both have no idea what there doing.
After a bunch of nonsense they free amorpho. Disguises now exist again.

it’s kinda funny to me how that dumb scene in kiwami 1 of majima getting shot and left for dead in the harbor was basically just added as a half-assed way to explain majima not being around for a bit of the plot, but they accidentally(?) just made it seem like start of a chain reaction where majima ended up feeling slighted and heartbroken after being abandoned like that and then lashed out about it via smashing a big truck into the building kiryu was in. and yeah that isn’t inherently a romantic thing as-is but then they go and add the part where majima grabs a hostess and performatively hits on her as in-kiryu’s-face as possible, she says she’s already in love with someone, and majima lets her go immediately, no questions asked, making a big fucking point of it just to say see THAT kiryu? I appreciate when people are HONEST about their FEELINGS. people who won’t just BACKSTAB someone who CARES about them to save themselves. is that so crazy kiryu?? huh??? anyway make it up to me get down here and fight me right fucking now

I’m normally all for parents giving their kids freedom in their life choices and I’m also all for kids wanting to try and experiment with things to express themselves but if you buy your kid who’s not even 16 expensive beauty products or take them to get waxed before they’re even a fully grown adult I am. side-eyeing you tbh

i am, once again, thinking about someone clearly really enjoying witnessing my attraction to them. we’re sitting at a bar - maybe it’s a bit of a cozy setup, we have to sit close so our knees are nearly touching - and i’m running my fingers around the rim of my drink. i’ve worn something i hope they’ll like, jewelry that accentuates my hands, makeup that accentuates when i make eyes at them. at first they are a little bit tentative, but they relax over time - i see them grow more confident as i laugh at their jokes, as i lean into them. maybe at one point i whisper something to them.
they’re bold when we get back to my place. they let their hands roam - they’re holding my face and their kisses are intense, they’re pulling me onto their lap. i feel them hard. they kiss my neck and when they hear my voice they put their palm on my throat to feel the vibrations and it makes me louder. i start to grind onto them, finding friction through both our clothes, until they bring their hands to my hips to still them — they think it’ll make me whine and they’re right. they feel my breath go shallow under our kisses. they press their palm to my sternum to feel it.

Okay I've talked about the tragedy of Laudna now let's talk about the tragedy of Imogen.
It’s been a while, but her moment in the Feywild truth exercise where she says "I think I’m tainted. I don’t know if I want to save gods that don’t love me" has really stuck in my mind. The thing is, I don’t think she’s specifically talking about the gods here, but rather summing up and projecting her entire experience as a ruidusborn. She isn’t thinking "Why aren’t I the gods' special little princess? Why haven’t they come to save me specifically?? You better love me or I'll let you die" (which we have seen does seem to be a common attitude in the Vanguard) This is her fear of being against her own will tainted by something evil. Her fear that, despite knowing how wrong it is, part of her longs for the power and belonging that comes with giving in to Predathos. It’s knowing that this thing is the antithesis of the gods, and that no matter what she does and how much she opposes it, it is still part of her. And because of that, the world doesn’t love her. Her mother left, her father can barely look at her, her own body will betray her with feelings and powers she doesn't understand, her community ostracized her, her allies view her with suspicion, the gods will not lend a hand in their own rescue when she asks despite Imogen putting herself and her loved ones in danger for their sake.
And Imogen is tired. Tired of being the bigger person, tired of resisting. Logically she knows the gods don’t hate her specifically but it ads up, and as the lure of Predathos does promise love and belonging part of her wants to give in because why should she risk so much to save a world that has never once tried to save her.
And that’s where she, as well as Laudna, get so interesting. They have deeply sympathetic reasons for their doubts and flaws, as well as for why they value each other so much higher than the entirety of Exandria (tl;dr because they have only ever gotten genuine understanding and unconditional love from each other). But that doesn’t mean it isn't flaws. It doesn’t mean Imogen, if she hadn’t met Laudna and the Hells first and realized the harm the Vanguard is causing and that their promises are ultimately lies, couldn’t have been drawn in by the Vanguard's ideas. It doesn’t mean they aren't wrong in blaming gods for bad things in their own lives, or in demanding special treatment. But it’s deeply understandable, which is the very reason they and people like them're such excellent targets for the Vanguard to convert. And once in the Vanguard, it doesn’t matter how tragic and sympathetic you are, you are still doing evil.
