Buddie 616 meta
Tumblr media
Maybe I’ll start with Eddie confirming something I’d already discussed in my meta posts more than once before, most recently in my 614 meta, which is that he married Shannon because she got pregnant. He heavily insinuated this to Bobby back in 217, but now he said it explicitly, to everyone, and without the same kind of weight which we saw from him in the past. I think this change is indicative of how he IS healing from the trauma of how badly his marriage failed and how guilty he’s felt over it, now that he’s capable of talking about it more lightly than he did before. I love that for our boy. ~~
Tumblr media
Speaking of these men actually being boys, moron husbands, partners in dumbness, we got Buck and Eddie sharing one brain cell and NOT putting it to good use. Even though in the overall scheme of 911 things, that might not seem that significant, I have to say I just love seeing them like that. It’s FUN seeing them being morons who support each other in the way they try to deal with Chim thinking that just popping the question to Maddie is enough, or in Eddie supporting Buck’s dumbass suggestion of a flash mob, or just being pressed together in the fire truck ‘coz they never have any personal boundaries with each other and they don’t understand why those would even be needed (seriously, don’t think too long about how all of a sudden five people had to squeeze in the back instead of four, and OF COURSE it would be Buck and Eddie rubbing thighs together, because no other pair out of the whole team is as comfortable with each other’s bodies). This may not be the deepest part of their bond, but it IS a part of it, a consistent one, the daily partnership that’s the foundation for the big, important, profound parts. ~~
Tumblr media
Once again, we get a demonstration of how the way Buck and Eddie are with each other is different to how they act with their other friends. Even when Eddie is exasperated with Buck, he never actually gets upset, he just tries to get Buck to focus, like we saw him in 516. But with Ravi, Eddie does kinda snap.
Tumblr media
Buck as well, when he hears some unpleasant truths about Madney from Hen, there’s no fondness underlining their talk, as much as we know that they DO love each other and have a sibling-like relationship. But compare that to how insufferably affectionate the glances that Buddie exchanged in 504 were as Eddie did essentially the same thing for Buck. ~~
Tumblr media
And then of course, we see how Hen has Chimney’s back in this ep, putting his well being first, but she does end up hurting him. They talk it over, and within the same ep she apologizes, he forgives her, everything is resolved, and they move. It’s lovely, but think about the difference in intensity between this and what Buddie went through back in s3. Buck files the lawsuit that would stop him from seeing Eddie in 304. Then the very reserved Eddie has a public meltdown, in the middle of a store, and right in front of his colleagues, because he can’t deal with Buck not being in his life. In fact, that’s the final straw that makes Eddie turn to street fighting. Not only that, because the intensity of his feelings overwhelms him, he doesn’t even directly express his hurt, he uses Chris to convey how much Eddie himself is missing Buck. When Buck realizes just how much pain he unintentionally caused, he wants to apologize, but Eddie is too hurt to be able to hear him out right away. It’s only in 306 that they finally talk, Eddie forgives Buck and then we get the beauty of their hug. But this is STILL not the final piece, no. The show will get back to this in the kitchen scene in 309, where Buck shows Eddie he’s worth apologizing to a second time (even though he’s not even asking Buck to), and the final shot of this is the domestic image of Buddifer on the couch, playing video games together. This is when we know that all is TRULY forgiven, when we get to see them once more as a family unit. Because that’s what they are on top of being best friends, like Hen and Chimney. ~~
Tumblr media
I’ll point out that Madney and Buddie paralleling is not new. This has been an ongoing theme since Buck and Chim’s new love interests were both introduced in 201, and since Madney got their onset in 206. The very fact that Maddie thinking Chim’s cute is revealed through a dialogue between the Buckley siblings that also indicates Buck sees Eddie in the same light says it all. I have also gone on about how Buck and Maddie served as truth tellers, voicing their sibling’s crush back to them, I have talked about how Madney were friends first, incredibly domestic friends with their own intertwined routine, before they became explicitly romantic, I wrote a whole meta post about the parallels between Madney and Buddie in 512, and now I can add to this. Because Madney easily fell into the comfort of domestic life, Chim told us this week that got in the way of them stopping to make their commitment official. That’s in a sense Buddie’s story, too. They’ve been building their lives and family unit together without even clocking that they can and should stop to figure out what this thing between them is, and commit to it.
~~ (my weekly meta posts) (my Buddie gifs) (all of my content)
~~ ~~ My tag list will follow in the reblog, please let me know if you wanna be added/removed here.
~~ I’m so thankful to the amazing @whosoldherout for the meta gifs she does each week! They’re always challenging, and you always manage to knock it out of the park!
~~ Thank you to anyone supporting these meta posts. I could never express enough how grateful I am and that they continue to exist thanks to you!

Buck & Eddie: 5 unresolved items from season 6
Tumblr media
There were several things in season 6 that were left unresolved including some that happened between Buck and Eddie.  These are items they never discussed and IMO, it’s possible they might resurface in season 7 and present the small amount of angst that’s been mentioned by OS and RG during their recent interviews.
Full Disclosure:  When season 6 ended, I like many other viewers, absolutely LOATHED the way Buck’s and Eddie’s endings were handled since they were both shoehorned into relationships with one-dimensional love interests the same way they had been at the end of season 4.  The constant delays of Buddie going CANON was just 🙄 and at the time, I took a step back because it felt like all the metaphors, callbacks, foreshadowing and hindsight that happened during the first 13 episodes were replaced with a forced narrative.  Characters were retconned too so they could fit into some “metaphorical FOX procedural drama box” and it frustrated me.  After 6x18 aired, I took a couple of weeks to formulate my overall thoughts on the season and I completed 15 Constructive Criticisms posts to move past my frustrations. Additionally, I started writing a massive multi-chapter fanfic to unravel the mess that was season 6 and I must admit, doing so helped because I was able to put some of the messy pieces to that unfinished puzzle of a season together.
Now... back to the regularly scheduled programming…
This post highlights the 5 things IMO that are still in play that didn’t get resolved last season and I’ve included details about them below.  Since season 7 is shortened and only has 10 episodes, it’s possible none of the things listed will be revisited but it’s also possible they will.
Before I get started, here’s a quick reminder, Buck and Eddie didn’t discuss any of the things listed in CANON.
1. The Donation
Tumblr media
Other than 6x7 when Eddie heard about Buck’s sperm donation for the first time at the firehouse, in 6x9 when they were on the four-way call when he responded to Chimney and said, “I don’t know… it kind of feels weird to congratulate him” and in 6x10 when he replied to Buck and said, “Sounds like your family had your back on the whole donation thing. That’s definitely progress” (notice he NEVER said he had Buck’s back on it and also his facial expressions in 6x9 after Buck’s announcement showed he wasn’t too thrilled about it) Buck and Eddie never discussed it.  Therefore, it is possible there could be some angst coming from it when the Buckley family’s other “deep dark family secret” (related post linked here) is revealed during or after Madney’s wedding.
Furthermore, Maddie’s NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT BUCK’S SPERM DONATION in CANON and every time it was mentioned in 6x10, it happened right after she left the room to check on Jee-Yun.  It’s obvious she knows about it since Chimney spoke up and said something to rebut Sang’s comment regarding a man raising another man’s child.  Another point to make about the whole “Meet the Parents” saga in 6x10 is the audience never saw Maddie converse with Sang and based on BTS information for season 7, it appears Sang, Albert nor Albert’s mom will be in attendance at the wedding. 👀
[FTR, I still don’t believe Connor and Kameron’s baby is biologically Buck's and I will stand on this hill, even if I have to stand alone, until there’s a blood test proving he is related to the baby (post linked here).]
2. The Onesie
Tumblr media
At the end of 6x9, Buck was asleep and he left the LAFD onesie he purchased sitting on top of his nightstand and it was right after the “Santa Ana Winds” ended.  However, there are two important things that should be remembered.
First, it has an LAFD logo on it which means it’s important to Buck because as he told Maddie in 2x18, "Being a firefighter is MY LIFE!  It’s the only thing I’ve ever done that was important and that mattered, ok?"
Why is this important?
It’s important because BUCK IDENTIFIES HIMSELF AS A FIREFIGHTER and after all these years he still hasn’t figured out firefighting is what he does. Eddie knows Buck’s more than a firefighter especially since he knows and loves him to his CORE!  Also, if Buck believed the biological relation wasn't important, then he could have just bought a regular onesie from Target or Wal-Mart, right?  Yes!
Second, in 6x17, Kameron stayed with Buck for several days which means if he wanted to, he could have given it to her as a gift but he didn’t.  Therefore, it’s possible it might come back into play after 7x5 when Connor and Kameron are supposed to show up again (OS mentioned Buck being a sperm donor for his friends won’t resurface until after the first five episodes).  Additionally, after 6A, the narrative could have changed since the onesie wasn’t seen again and that could be due to all the audience backlash that happened after it was over.
Viewers didn’t like the jokes about Buck’s "swimmers" or the lack of his "alone time" and all the other ways the storyline was fumbled. By the start of 6B, the show tried to make the audience believe Buck understood he was the "donor not the dad" 👀.
If the actual onesie doesn’t make a reappearance, then I believe the ramifications associated with the way Buck identifies himself will and it could be a point of contention between him and Eddie since Eddie was the one who told him in 4x14, “You act like you’re expendable... but you’re wrong”.
3. Buck’s Death
Tumblr media
At the end of 6x18, it appeared as if Buck still hadn’t dealt with the fact that he DIED and it’s possible nobody else has either, especially Eddie, Maddie, Bobby and their found family. Reminder, Maddie and Bobby both said, “Buck, you died!” and when they said it, Buck became frustrated.
However, when Eddie said, “You died Buck!”, he stopped and listened but the way Eddie said it was different for A LOT OF REASONS (post linked here).  After Eddie asked if he was allowed to ask how he was, Buck replied, “Honestly Eddie… I don’t know” but they have yet to have a full CANON conversation about the effects of it the same way they haven’t discussed any of their other shared traumas.
Additionally, during that conversation, they briefly discussed the shooting but they didn't fully talk about it other than Buck asking Eddie what he remembered. It’s another important and shared traumatic event that’s happened between them but like the well, the hostage situation and Eddie's breakdown, they still have yet to discuss it. Buck seemed to be a little upset by the fact that Eddie “said” he didn’t remember anything other than the searing pain he felt in his shoulder (I believe he remembers more than he said he does).
Buck's response was, “Is that it?” as if to say, “You don’t remember me crawling underneath a firetruck, pulling you out, picking you up and putting you inside of the truck? You don't remember me holding a gauze to your wound and asking you to stay with me? You don't remember asking me if I was hurt? Because I WAS!”  Also, it was kind of like Buck’s heart broke because Eddie “said” he doesn’t "really" remember it while Buck can’t forget the way his heart fell out of his chest that day when he saw the love of his life bleeding out in the middle of the street.
Also, Eddie’s still waiting for Buck to talk about the fact that he died. Reminder, Eddie's heart fell out of his chest too and he yelled at the hospital staff and told them to "Do More!" Even though they briefly discussed it while they were in the cemetery in 6x15, BUCK STILL HASN’T DEALT WITH IT YET!  If he would have gone to therapy instead of whatever he was doing with the DeAtH dOuLa, then maybe he would have dealt with it by now.
4. Buck’s Couch
Tumblr media
Full Disclosure:  Like so many viewers, I was pissed at the end of the season when Buck asked N to help him pick out a new couch because it didn’t make any sense and the truth is IT STILL DOESN’T but hindsight is 20/20 and I do believe the couch was still there for a reason.  IMO, it has everything to do with what could happen between Buck and Eddie in season 7.
Please note, these are my observations and interpretations about what I believe the destruction of Buck’s couch represented.
After Margaret bought Buck a new couch at the end of 6x11, beginning in 6x12, the show spent a lot of time showing how uncomfortable it was for Buck whenever he tried to rest on it.  Also, they AVOIDED showing it in a lot of other scenes even though Buck’s previous couch (the black leather one), when he still had it, could always be seen in the frame (post linked here).  However, the orange couch wasn’t fully seen until 6x18 before Kameron gave birth on it.
IMO, her giving birth on the couch Buck's mother purchased represented a lot of things including Buck’s idea of the life he always believed he was supposed to have.  Reminder, he gave his sperm (I don’t think the baby is his but let’s roll with this idea for a moment) to Connor (a former roommate) so him and his wife could have a baby even though Connor and Buck hadn’t seen each other in years.
He met him while they were in Peru and the only reason Buck ended up in L.A. was because Connor suggested he move with him and his friends because they were “kind of like a family”.  Also, he said Buck has a good heart and that was the reason why he wanted him to be their donor but reminder, the reasons why he said he chose him aren’t hereditary.
It appears the way Connor presented himself in 6x4, with a wife and in search of that "missing" piece (a baby) is exactly what Buck’s always wanted and that’s what his couch represented.  Let's be real, Connor manipulated Buck and they aren’t friends because if they were, wouldn’t he have invited Buck to the wedding or kept in contact with him over those three years? It kind of seemed like he wanted to rub his nose in the fact that he finally settled down while Buck was still living the bachelor life (not really because he already has his own family with Eddie and Chris, he just hasn't realized it yet).
The issue with Buck’s couches was he’s wanted his own family for years but the way his life has been presented, it appears he believes no one wants to build a life or a family with him and that's why he gave away a piece of himself. In doing so, he was trying to fix the issues he may have seen in Connor's and Kameron's marriage since it was barely hanging on by a thread.  Reminder, Connor let his pregnant wife leave and he didn’t try to reconcile with her.  Also, Buck never said why he didn’t want to turn them down when he was talking to Hen even though he should have.
I believe the destruction of Buck’s couch with the birth of the baby on it was about more than the couch itself.  It was destroyed and unsalvageable because THE DREAM OR IDEA Buck’s always believed he was supposed to have got destroyed when he gave his sperm away.  Also, the couch was his MOTHER’S idea of the life she wants him to have instead of the life he wants to have for himself, hence the reason why he told her he would get a couch when he was ready but she ignored him and bought him one anyway.
His "destroyed couch" illustrated the image Buck’s had in his mind of the life and the family he thought he was supposed to want for years, (i.e., a wife and a child) is no longer applicable because his family will include a husband, EDDIE and their son, CHRIS.
Reminder, there was a lot of talk about the types of family in 6B and they all related to Buck's idea of a family.  In 6x10, Buck told Bobby and Eddie, “It kind of felt like we were an actual family” but then Eddie replied, “You are an actual family”.  Also, in 6x13 when they went to play poker, Eddie responded to Buck while they were walking through the kitchen and said, “It’s a different kind of family” and later in the same episode, Chimney said to Maddie, Athena and Bobby, “Every family is different” but they were talking about Buck because Maddie said she would be furious with Buck if he did what Rhonda Fitzsimmons did when she used her nephew to gain access to Maddie's and Chimney's home.
5. Eddie’s Couch
Tumblr media
Eddie’s blue couch has always been Buck’s couch too and if it wasn’t going to be Buck's anymore, then something would have happened to it or Eddie would have bought a new one like he did at the end of season 2.  But Eddie didn’t and only Buck’s couch got DESTROYED at the end of season 6👀.
Reminder, in 6x9 Eddie was shown sleeping on it, in 6x12 Buck was shown sleeping on it and Chris was shown sleeping on it in 6x15.
Eddie didn’t get the blue couch until season 3 and the couch he had in season 2 was gray (post linked here).  It’s evident Buck still hasn’t figured out Eddie’s couch is also his even though he does know he’s not a guest there.
Therefore, Eddie’s couch and everything it represents for Buck, i.e., a romantic relationship, family and fatherhood will be in play until Buck realizes it or until Eddie explains it to him.
Will the small amount of angst Buck and Eddie experience in season 7 revolve around these 5 unresolved items or others? Only the showrunner, writers and producers know the answer to that question.

Weekly Recap | January 22nd-28th 2024
Tumblr media
First experiment to try and fix my ao3 history page has been a fail. Will have to delete another userscript to see if it fixes the problem 🙄
On another note, I've made a post but in case you haven't seen it: if I've ever reblogged one of your WIP fics, consider this my permission to tag me in them (not so I'll participate of course, but to increase the chance I'll see them 😆)
Complete
let's fast forward to three hundred awkward blind dates later by heartbeatdiaz/ @loserdiaz (Canon Divergent, Chef Buck | 7K | Teen): Eddie figures if he's going to go on bad dates, he might as well go to Buck and Bobby's restaurant so Buck can save him from them. Buck suffers and pines like the idiot he is, and feelings are blurted out over dinner and fancy wine.
the more we move ahead the more we're stuck in rewind by trysetmeonfire/ @try-set-me-on-fire (S4E5: Buck Begins | 4K | Teen): After the factory fire, Buck’s parents show up at the station. It goes poorly. Written for the bad things happen bingo prompt: backhand slap.
And When You Speak, Angels Sing From Above by callmenewbie/ @callmenewbie (Established Buddie, Proposal | 3K | General): Buck pops the question but before saying yes, Eddie needs to ask someone else first.
we didn't happen the way we were supposed to (where do we go now?) by Iover_of_mine (I_almost_do) / @lover-of-mine (Post-S6 | 4K | Teen): Buck and Eddie start fighting over things left unsaid or just misunderstood.
only the best will do by trysetmeonfire/ @try-set-me-on-fire (Madney Wedding | <1K | General): Buck gets a little intense about wedding planning. Chimney hides in the kitchen. Eddie is a man in love.
through bloodshot eyes the sky is falling (it kills me when i try to push you away) by screamingcolours/ @vampbuckley (Post-S6 | 6K | Teen): Buck and Eddie have a fight, get in a car accident, and confess their feelings. Not exactly in that order.
Partnership: Finding the Right Scent by faradheia/ @faradheia, RhystaRose (Sentinels&Guides AU | 7K | Explicit): Guide Evan Buckley and Sentinel Eddie Diaz navigate through their life as firefighters and a mostly bonded pair. If only Buck could solve his Sentinel's last sense issue there might be the sweet smell of success...
my heart is trying to crawl out of my chest to get to you by bucksclipboard (S6E12: Recovery | 2K | General): Buck is released from the hospital and while the rest of his family is understandably on edge about his recovery, Eddie throws himself back into work. He refuses to be a part of Maddie’s “operation buck up buttercup” and Hen grows suspicious. Listen, it’s not like Eddie isn’t worried, quite the opposite actually. He just found a better way to watch over Buck, without having to spill any of his secrets. Unless technology plays a trick on him, as it usually does, and his foolproof plan goes wrong. But Buck might just surprise him.
forever is in your eyes by appleoctopie/ @appleoctopie (Getting Together | 3K | Teen): or the one where eddie needed his son to help him realize he's dating his best friend (it's okay because buck didn't realize it either)
You don't have to be related to relate by Polish_Amber (David POV, Buck&Bobby | 10K | General): The one where David is determined to prove that he’s in it with Michael for the long-haul, and that includes accepting and caring about the children of the Grant-Nash household. All 3 of them. (And Athena and Michael laugh more than they have in months, Bobby is sheepish, and David learns a bit about chosen families).
this is (not) a puppy love by asteriasera/ @asteriasera (Post-S6, Getting Together | 7K | General): Five times their family realizes Buck and Eddie are in love and the one time Buck and Eddie realize they’re in love
In a drought I'll give you water by JamesPearce911/ @diazsdimples (PWP, Established Buddie | 8K | Explicit): Or: Eddie finds come on Buck's underwear and panics
🔥 the answer to it all (is in the back of my mind and on the tip of my tongue) by waferkya/ @oursisthewinter (Canon Divergent, Cop Eddie | 17K | Teen): AU in which Eddie is a cop who just moved to LA; Buck has zero self-esteem, a praise kink the size of the desert and no clue on how to pick a decent Dom; and eventually love conquers all.
it was your heart on the line (I really fucked it up this time, didn't I, my dear?) by smilingbuckley/ @smilingbuckley (Post-S6 | 4K | Teen): Buck gets called to the station to bail Eddie out of jail, but Eddie refuses to tell him what happened and why he punched Phillip Buckley.
Eddie Diaz Is NOT a Birthday Person by Daisies_and_Briars / @cal-daisies-and-briars (Fluff | 4K | Teen): Eddie doesn't put much stock into celebrating his birthday, as an adult. But for the first time since moving to Los Angeles, it happens to fall right in the middle of a four-off. Buck schemes. Romance ensues rather accidentally.
sleep safe and warm by allisonRW96/ @homerforsure (Established Buddie | 2K | Teen): A few months into their relationship, Buck and Eddie finally share a bed.
WIP
🔥 A Minor Delay by rainbow_nerds/ @rainbow-nerdss (Post-S6/S7 Spec | 3/11 | 10K | Mature): Almost a year after the bridge collapse, a lot has changed. The team are scattered—Bobby and Athena on their Honeymoon, Hen on adoptive parent's leave, and Buck and Eddie... They may still work together, still have movie nights with Chris whenever they can, but things have changed. With Maddie and Chimney's wedding around the corner, Buck tries to make it perfect. And maybe, along the way, he might figure out why everything still feels... wrong.
🔥 Winter Prayer by Daisies_and_Briars/ @cal-daisies-and-briars (Road Trip, Buck&Bobby&May | 2/3 | 12K | General): When a work conflict prevents Athena from accompanying Bobby to Minnesota for the ten year anniversary of his family dying, Buck and May offer to go instead. Over the course of the trip, they all learn more about each other, and Bobby faces his grief.
🔥 Things We're All Too Young to Know by @cal-daisies-and-briars (Canon, S1 through S6 | 108/? | 303K | Mature): This is a love story. Even if it doesn’t always look like it. Even if it doesn’t always feel like it. A look back on Eddie and Buck's lives up to now, and what led them to each other, interpreted from the current 9-1-1 canon.
Fractals from the Lightning Bolt by letmetellyouaboutmyfeels/ @letmetellyouaboutmyfeels (One Shots Collection | 41/54 | 78K | Not Rated): A collection of oneshots, some originally posted on tumblr. Each chapter is individually rated.
46. My Words Might Stumble but Not My Heart :  Just another cute "what if" getting together fic.
Kiss Me Once Cause You Know I Had A Long Night by I_still_dont_understand_13 / @sherlockcrossing (Prompt collection | 21/? | 14K | Teen): 100 kiss prompts.
Chapter 25. 3. Kisses that travel from your lover's nose to their lips
search history by forgottenwords (Getting Together | 9/10 | 11K | Explicit): Eddie opened the Safari app to find a specific recipe Buck was looking for, but something was already typed in the search box. ok i’m talk about hen because god, i love her.
henrietta wilson and her character and storyline is very personal to me. without giving too much away about my personal life, she is very very similar to my sister. so its safe to say, she has my whole heart.
a lot of the talk (on my feed) lately around 7x04 and 7x05 has been about buck, which is fair, and you create your own feed yada yada. but i wanna talk about hen and her storyline(s) this season.
i will preface this by once again saying that hen’s character means a lot to me because she reminds me so much of my sister, so i’m going to have bias, and my view is going to be different and probably very opinionated and i’m aware of that.
we’re gonna start with the things i’m loving so far this season:
the first being that i love captain hen. it makes so much sense to me that hen would be the one to fill in for bobby (i can elaborate on that if y’all want just scream at me in my asks).
i love that we are seeing more interactions between hen and maddie. i think it’s really important that we see their relationship not only because maddie is chimney’s wife, but also because she’s buck’s sister. and hen obviously cares about the both of them so much, so to see hen interacting with the people that love the people she loves is mwuah so good!
the current henren storyline is so important. i love love love their growth as foster parents and i think mara’s story is going to be equally heartbreaking and heartwarming. i’m just excited to see how she fits into the wilson family.
now the things i’m not loving:
the fact that maddie was the one to call everyone in instead of hen. i feel like hen has never been wrong when it comes to her gut?? i can understand the fact that if she was going to get in trouble, she was just going to get herself alone in trouble, but have we not learned by now that there is strength in numbers?
the henren and mara storyline being put in 7x05. i’ve said before that 7x05 felt very rushed and i don’t like that there were three major storylines packed into one episode on top of the calls that the team goes on. in general i would’ve liked to see all the storylines in 7x05 be in their own episode with the calls instead of the chaos and the rush that is the 7x05. but the mara storyline is definitely one i’m invested in and i would love to see it handled with care and not rushed like the entirety of the latest episode was.
finally what i would like to see for hen, henren, and the wilson family in general:
i want to see more maddie and hen scenes. and more henren and madney scenes. we get a lot of emotional and hilarious screen time with chimney and hen but we don’t really see them interact with each other’s families outside of the 118. i would just love to see more of that. especially since both henren and madney have kids and i just want to see something that shows the parents of show interacting.
and to piggyback off of that, i want to see more eddie and hen!!! we don’t see much of their relationship but i think it makes sense the two would be close and hang out outside of work especially because denny and chris are close in age. once again, i just want to see the parents of the show interact more outside of calls.
now i’m gonna bring buck into this. i would love to see a scene between buck and hen regarding buck coming out. i just know would be so nurturing and supportive but also ready to tease the hell out of him especially after hearing how the first bucktommy date went.
lastly, i want to see how mara’s story plays out more than anything. it’s not going to be easy and i am so looking forward to the angst of it all but also the fluff and growth of hen’s character and the entire wilson family.
that’s majority of it (i have so many thoughts about hen, but they’re personal since she does remind me of my sister) but please feel free to come scream with me in my asks!!

Costume Meta 6x16
Thank you costume department for giving me an easy ride this week after a couple of weeks of epics!!!!
So there aren’t a lot of costumes to talk about this week (only 9) and only for 4 characters - Jee-Yun, Maddie, Chimney and Hen. Everyone else was in uniform the entire time. There wasn’t even all that much going on with the uniforms to talk about either - they didn’t single anyone character out as separate from the rest!
In more general terms we got to see check and stripe theory at play again on the characters in peril or trouble. We continue to get children in peril foreshadowing going on and I was obsessed with the choice to put Jayden in an army green zip up top an a tee with hand prints all over the front. It wasn’t only a nod towards the many voices making light work of locating him when he snuck off, but it also would appear to be foreshadowing for the idea that it will take many hands to rescue Chim (and whomever else needs saving) in the finale.
As always its below the cut to save your dash!
Jee-Yun
Baby Jee why you have to be so cute? Ok so other than the adorable way she kept staring at Bobby in the scene in his office her little denim jacket was very cute. I’m intrigued by the fact that we had Chris in a denim jacket last week and we’ve got Jee in one this week, I think I’ve talked about it in one of my previous costume meta’s, but Denim jackets are a symbol of rebellion, freedom, change and comfort. To me the use of these denim jackets (and we can include the sort of one Maddie wore in this as well) are a form of foreshadowing - telling us that change is coming/happening. For Chris last week it could be symbolic of the Diaz boys moving on from Shannon and while still honouring her and including her in their lives, they are in a place to make change and move forward. While For Jee it is being connected in with the engagement ring and so represents the change in family dynamic that is upcoming reenforcing the engagement (and subsequent marriage) of Madney. In both cases the suggestion is that the change will be a comfortable one.
Tumblr media
these pyjamas are just so lovely - I want grown up sized ones please!! They do however have some super interesting potential meanings attached to them. Firstly I would not be surprised if the choice of floral pyjamas (again attached to the ring) are foreshadowing Jee-Yun flower girl duties at the Madney wedding. Secondly the choice to have ones that are only partly coloured in is interesting - it suggests there is still ongoing work and that things aren’t finished yet - its a work in progress - here telling us the engagement isn’t a foregone conclusion in the way we perhaps think - there are lots of ways this could be read - Maddie proposing before Chim, Jee handing the ring over, the ring being found, them both proposing to each other - lots of possibilities - the unfinished nature of the pyjama print is likely telling us things are not going to go as we expect them to! then there is the types of flowers on the pyjamas and wha they mean in relation to the arc of this episode, but also more widely with Maddie. There are two main flowers on these pyjamas - gerbera daisies and sunflowers. Gerbera’s mean cheerfulness and loyal love, while the sunflowers represent happiness, loyalty, resilience, hope, endurance and enduring love and if you are not seeing how those meanings perfectly describe Madney then I don’t know what to tell you! Sunflowers are also closely connected with hidden disabilities and especially with mental health, this is where the resilience and endurance comes from - I think they are supposed to further highlight Maddie’s mental health struggles which were discussed in the episode, but their appearance on Jee show us the bright side - the hope that comes from fighting on and coming out the other side - it ultimately connects into the ‘I got out of the ocean for you, for both of you’ of it all - the idea of following your own personal sun!
Tumblr media
Maddie
Fascinated by the choice to have Madde in black and purple for both her costumes this week. The first is a black top under a black jacket with a yellow and purple check pattern as well as a cat, skull and wing logo dotted across the jacket. Black is a power colour, but it is also about concealing vulnerabilities, while purple can be a colour that encourages self knowledge and deepens our understanding of our innermost self. I think their use in both costumes here is not so much about Maddie in the scenes we see her in, as much as it is reflecting on the amount of growth and work she has done on herself to get to where she is right now - how she concealed how vulnerable she was from everyone including Chimney back in season 5 when she was at her lowest with PPD. Then the presence of purple shows us how much Maddie has learnt and how far she has come - it is an indicator of her current state - she is in a good place and has a good understanding of both herself and of her relationship with Chimney. That isn’t to say that Maddie isn’t still concealing vulnerability - we have seen her talk with Josh about not wanting to change the status quo because they are in a good place so there is still an element of underlying tension etc which will need to be resolved before the engagement can become a reality.
Tumblr media
Then we get this black shirt worn with bright purple sweats. The two heart necklaces are worn in both scenes this episode, the smaller heart necklace is a new one, the larger one has been around all season and has seemingly been used interchangeably to represent different characters at different times. What I find interesting about Maddie now having two hearts rathe than one is that idea that the large heart was much more about family - this included Buck. It still does mean family, but now with the smaller heart it suggests there is a division between familial love and a different type of love - romantic love. To me this diviion at this moment is important. it tells us that Maddie has previously kept Chimney in the box of family - so while she loves him and is in love with him and fully committed to the relationship they have, it has always been a whole - a part of her familial love. This has been a self preservation tactic for her - she still bears the scars of her marriage to Doug and keeping Chimney in the box alongside family is a way of her protecting herself. Now though, now we have it separated - it is smaller, not because it is lesser, but because it is a tentative step - testing the waters as it were - a representation of Maddie deciding that it is safe enough to set that love free properly, that she is ready to take that leap again and have a marriage not just a family.
Tumblr media
Chim
Chim being almost entirely in grey this week (with a blue marl tee under the grey zip front hoodie) started wit the grey shirt we see him in at the jewellery store. this shirt is a cleaver piece of costuming because it has both a horizontal stripe and a check pattern on it. the white horizontal stripes play in to stripe theory - change is coming for Chim, while the darker grey vertical lines help to create a check pattern which continues the Chim in check theme we’ve seen all series and is very much foreshadowing his being in danger and impending injury.
Tumblr media
Chim’s grey zip front hoodie is a waffle knit which gives it a subtle check pattern, so here again we have more check on Chimney - all building up to whatever peril he is going to be in in the season finale. Grey is a conservative colour and is associated with being unemotional but also compromise. It is also a colour of  stability and control, so I found it especially fascinating for him to be wearing it throughout this episode where he appears to be anything but unemotional, stable and in control!
I do however thing the grey is an intentional call back to his father - who we saw in a lot of grey. It makes me think of the conversation Chim had abut his father with Myung-Soon about him not being able to make his first relationship work, or his business, however his relationship with Myung-Soon has workd - well as has his business - when he was in the right place.
With their being a loud call back to Tatiana and Chim not being able to make that relationship work because ultimately they wanted different things, whereas his relationship with Maddie has worked despite all of the obstacles they have faced and Chimney is successful in his career (hello very pointed visual of Chim in the captains chair and office!). I’m also amused at the choice to have him wearing a head torch - a nod to the ring box having a little light in it and it being empty - in the same way that Chim’s search for the ring in the garbage heap is also coming up empty.
Tumblr media
Hen
This Celtic knot jumper is my favourite outfit of the episode. the red white and blue hints at patriotism, but in this case I think the patriotism is code for being supportive towards your friends and family - as we see Hen doing here - supporting Chim even though she has reservations about him proposing to Maddie.
The use of Celtic knots - specifically the Solomons Knot is a really cool choice. Celtic knots in a general sense mean infinity or eternity - and can be attached to various concepts such as faith, friendship or romantic love. The Solomons knot specifically has connections to wisdom and knowledge as well as having a connection to the endless cycle of time and the concept of setting things in motion. These are all meanings that connect with this scene so well, the other thing to consider though is that these knots aren’t just found in western culture. they are commonly found in African culture - the knot is often found on the clothing of the Yoruba people where it denotes royal status, and on the people of the Kuba, it has a very different meaning, it is known as the Kramo bone symbol and means "one being bad makes all appear to be bad"
The duality of meanings is fascinating to me - I think the jumper is signalling Hens unending love for Chimney as her friend, but also hints at her reservations about Maddie - that idea of one being bad makes all bad is pretty interesting in the context - the idea that Hen isn't convinced about Maddie because she 'abandoned' Chimney and Jee once. It hints at Hen making sweeping decisions or forming an opinion based on one thing rather than seeing the whole picture - its about Hen not being in the relationship and therefore not seeing all the parts of it - its a direct call to The speech Eddie made on Bucks balcony in season 5 about Buck not being in Maddie and Chim’s relationship and Buck loving Maddie in a different way to the way Chim loves her because he knows her in a different context.
Tumblr media
Yellow hoodied Hen my beloved! Its just such a good colour on her! It does of course (as always) represent communication - and in this instance, a representation of the fact that Hen and Chimney are communicating properly once more - they had their talk and are now back on the same page and back to getting themselves into trouble together! The white trousers we definitely a choice! Although I think what the costume department were trying to do here was show Hen getting her hands dirty in a physical way - in a visual representation of penance - undertaking a mucky and unpleasant task asa way of making up for her not talking openly with Chim about her concerns.
Tumblr media
“Oh what a tangled webs we weave when first we practice to deceive!” The Walter Scott quote appears apt on the surface for this hoodie Hen wears at the end of the episode, as it looks to be a web like design. I however didn’t think the web metaphor fit here - if we’d seen her in it at the beginning of the episode, it absolutely would as she tangled herself up in a web throughout the episode.
To me it looks more like shattered glass or broken ice (interestingly enough the pattern is described as sea ice on the designers website!) both are perfect analogies for Hen at this moment - her preconceived notions and her illusions and worries have been shattered. The broken glass could represent the image she saw of how things were in Madney’s relationship have been shattered - it can represent her dismantling the image she saw - the reflection (which is never the actual reality) and recognising it as false enabling her to move on and forward. The broken ice metaphor is both playing into the concept of ‘breaking the ice’ like those silly office team building games etc that get played - Hen breaking the ice post her and Chim’s big conversation from earlier. But the broken ice metaphor can also be about being trapped in a way of thinking and without obvious escape without help. It’s a nod to the fact that Chimney offering his forgiveness to Hen is an act of breaking the ice that had covered their relationship - Hen being the one wearing it is a representation of the person who created the ice in the first place.

I didn’t manage to get this out as quickly as I’d hoped this week, real life decided it wanted me to be very busy!! But I go there in the end! hope you enjoyed reading it and let’s see what next week brings us (I think it might be a case of normal service resuming and there being a million costumes to talk about!!

Why do you think Natalia is unlikely to be back? From past experience (looking at Taykay), I thought any LI of Buck would be a sure thing to return, no matter how shitty it’s written. As for Marisol, if she’s not fired for her transphobic speech, we are looking at Ana 2.0…
Before the strike, I thought Natalia could be back to at least test the waters re: audience reception. Fandom may not have found her engaging, but (IMO) the GA's opinion could have been swayed had they seen her some more (and assuming Tim & Kristen put actual thought into giving her a personality and a purpose). Buck and a pretty lady? Particularly a pretty lady that comes off nicer than the last? Not a hard sell.
But the more I thought about it, the more I started wondering how a death doula is going to fit into Buck's life now that we've seen him work through his feelings about the possibility of dying on the job, and regardless of how people felt, story-wise, her career matched up with where he was (mentally) at in 6B. We just didn't see any of that connection. (More off screen development at the hands of Kristen...let's hope that gets better next year.) If Natalia were to come back, she'd be getting the Ali and Ana treatment, I think - an appearance every few weeks so you remember she's there - because there's truly nothing for her and Buck to do together that matches the other pairings. No kids right now. That makes her different from Michael and Karen, the two longtime non-first responder spouses. And Shannon. And even Ana, who Eddie first became interested in at a parent-teacher conference. No history of reporting or crime solving. They're no Bathena. Or even BT. She's not a firefighter. They won't be BL. She's not a dispatcher. There goes the Madney angle. (Natalia getting close to her boyfriend's sister, having double dates). And there *also* goes the potential for communication over radio or one showing concern over the other's safety (y'no, the thing we assume should be happening more with Madney). So much of Buck's story line has been about his personal relationships and desire for love/a family of his own. A girlfriend that he interacts with two times in half a season (all things being equal aka not 5A) doesn't seem like the way this is gonna go considering how his previous two "relationships" (counting Lucy) were with women who had a reason to regularly interact with him. The effort IS being made now, but it's not enough to win the audience over because of choices that were made early on. (The Lucy intro was just. Completely avoidable. Cheating is not how you get the moms on board, duh.) I expect that to change with Tim in the driver's seat critiquing more closely than before.
& regarding Marisol, yeah, the Ana detail is why I'm not as sure of or concerned with the character's status. The show has yet to write a LI for Eddie that has a presence. (I know people have their feelings about Shannon, but strictly speaking appearances, her first two set up her arrival and stay in LA and then the next "big" episode didn't come until she was supposed to die.) I don't know that I'll believe that's a priority in the writers' room until I actually see it for myself. :/ (And as for the transphobia...the ones in charge stayed silent and so much of the GA must not have a clue it happened, so I wouldn't even count on *that* being a deciding factor. If it's anything, it's her delivery and lack of chemistry with Ryan. So basically, Gabrielle 2.0.)

I too still want to know Eddie's thoughts about Buck donating sperm. We only got Hen's advice for Buck, but I don't remember anything/anyone else? The only thing we can glean from Eddie's "Idk, it feels weird to congratulate him" and his facial expressions, is... he possibly didn't fully approve. I always felt that storyline was weird for not having Buck talk to more of his family, including Eddie.
yeah it's really strange. like i get him talking to hen about it since she's been the person on the other side with fostering and adopting and i loved their conversation. but for him to not discuss it with eddie at all when eddie is a father and buck's relationship with chris being what it is, it really felt like an elephant in the room that they never acknowledged.
however having rewatched s6 just before s7 aired, i really do think the sperm donor arc was the main one they dropped when things started shifting over the fear of cancellation etc. because up until about 'in another life' the groundwork is absolutely there to dig into it. everything is set up!!!
but then it just doesn't get brought up again until 6x17 when kameron crashes his date with natalia and there isn't really much time then to delve into how buck is dealing with it all
(in contrast i would say the other big storylines of the season - hen and karen's story with denny's bio dad, bobby's arc with wendall, madney proposal - all have very clear and satisfying resolutions)
@mellaithwen and i were discussing it and bc it was mentioned in a s7 promo vid as one of the things to 'remember' from s6, we were saying it's possible they'll bring it all up retrospectively now like they did with eddie's 5b storyline
so if they do i'd really love to see him talk to eddie about it and, in turn, actually see what eddie thought of it all, y'know??
but i suppose we'll just have to wait and see!!

Hahahahahahaha. And here we go again, clowning for another year! LOL.
Is it weird that what I’m maddest about at the episode was that they hit EVERY.SINGLE.HOLLYWOOD.CLICHE on the birth scene and then had the gal to give Buck that line about how he’s a professional.
HOT WATER AND TOWELS BOY? (And not even boiled water too, I mean wtf, LOLOL)
(and I am also looking at you Howard Han, but I’m leaving that down to general befuddlement because an ambulance just fell on you)
Anyway. I can’t believe this is the moment they finally got me with the sperm donor storyline. Because to me, it’s not about Buck not getting the family he so badly wants anymore (look right next to you, buddie, I beg of you, but I digress) or choosing a healthy place for himself to keep the kid in his mind (dad vis a vis donor) - I finally understood the assignment.
Buck has had to face the fact that he was chosen to be made, not to be loved, but for a purpose. A purpose that he couldn’t fullfil through no fault of his own, but that has haunted his life forever before he even knew why.
Now he CHOSE a son to be MADE for LOVE.
That’s it.
That’s what it was all about it. It doesn’t matter that he had to give him up (and he’ll get to be in his life for sure one way or the other, so I’m not actually worried about that anymore). The legacy he’s leaving to that little boy that is part of him is getting to grow up being loved the way Buck should have and deserved to grow up being loved.
And now he can let go of that trauma.
He doesn’t have to be anything for anybody.
He can go figure out who he is now without that expectation. He got to say goodbye to the spectre of Daniel and he got to say goodbye to the couch that was chosen for him. And yes, even though he’s still stumbling into a relationship again without really being ready (in the sense that he still hasn’t figured out how he feels about his death) at least he’s actively asking for help choosing for himself. And hell, maybe that’s not too bad a thing. Cause that’s what Natalia does right? Helps people choose how to live their life purposefully and meaningfully and offer companionship along the way. (And maybe she learned something too of the experience?) So Buck can grow a little more, gain the confidence to figure out what it actually is that he wants and then ask for it. CHOOSE life.
Maybe Eddie actually choosing to do the dating thing, to LEARN how to do it, properly, in a way that doesn’t put pressure on him, that’s just figuring out, is a good thing too?
People, hell the show itself, has been talking about how he’s had to mature too fast. Grow up skipping past a lot of milestones, hell his OWN SON is roasting him for his game like a peer instead of an adult. Maybe Eddie has to take that step first to play, to experiment, to just be - in order to also figure out what he wants. When you first start dating things are very serious (Shannon), sometimes you mess up because you haven’t figured yourself out yet (Ana), then you just try to find your footing and have fun with each other and learn (I can see that happening with Marisol) and when you’ve learned your lessons, made your mistakes, had your fun... you’ve matured enough to find what you’ve been making for a long, long time (Buck).
So yeah... typing up all this stream of consciousness I seem to have talked myself out of being mad at were our boys ended up? Funny how that goes.
And yes, this had the feel of a possible series finale that they pulled up very well and that tied up a lot of things (I’m looking at you beautiful beautiful people, Bathena, getting your cruise, dreadful hawaii print and all, and Madney continuing to build the life they choose, growing healthy together which is so fun to watch and Henren finally with a dream they’d all but given up in reach) - but a show does only keep our attention if it leaves its characters some road to go (room to grow or rope to hang themselves, your pick, lol). So since we are actually getting another shot to see them back, I am hopeful now.
So... tldr, I actually want to thank the fandom community here, all the smart, witty, compassionate people digging for the deeper meaning way past what the writers probably intended or even knew was there themselves. Y’all spread your takes and I know whenever I’ve finished watching I’ll go here and find something to explain to me why I shouldn’t be mad about stuff or how I missed that hidden parallel or how someone agrees with my view and I always come away in awe of all the thoughtfulness that goes into all of it.
My little pocket friends, we live to clown another day, here’s to a summer of meta, fix it fic, season 7 spec - this has been my first season in real time, it was an honor and a privilege.

My biggest question is: how are they going to wrap all the stories in 40 minutes!?!!??
There’s a lot to tell: Madney, the bridge thing, the sperm donor story, Natalia/Marisol, hopefully some Buddie…
I’m really intrigued about how they’re gonna play it all!
It's a LOT for 40 minutes, I am not completely sure that they can wrap all of it up in one episode.
I have a feeling that for all of KR love for wrapping up stories for the season, this one has the potential to end on a cliffhanger.
I believe that the Madney situation may only be resolved next season, the bridge thing is totally dependent on when in the episode it happens, if it is at the end of 6x17, like 4x13 when Eddie was shot? Or maybe a cliffhanger where we're left to wonder if one of our favorite firefighters live through this disaster.
Buck's talk with Connor told me two things, one Connor is not entirely sure he wants a baby or ready to have one, now that it's a reality, and something is waiting just around the corner for Buck.
Now the clown in me says that all the references from both Buck and Eddie to the future and things becoming very real very soon have a hidden, or maybe not so hidden, message that buddie canon is very near. I'm optimistic that way.
So Buck, imo, came to terms with the sperm donor thing, but I don't think the couple itself has their story resolved. I'm semi hoping they ask Buck to be godfather, or for Connor to get cold feet and for Cameron to come to Buck for help with her birth and later with the baby.
But those are all fanfics materials lol, we'll see.
The Cameron thing, imo, will probably happen in the beginning of the episode, thus leaving the firefam to maybe discuss it as the universe screams at them again, that life is short and they're wasting time.
I'm thinking maybe Natalia helps Buck come to terms with something, and they separate as friends or whatever, because dating Natalia will be pretty much dating Taylor under another profession, but same attitude.
Natalia is an interesting character, but she doesn't feel concrete enough to stick around, I think she's just a way for Buck to move past his ordeal and come to terms with whatever is holding him back now.
In my experience, those that find death fascinating were either touched by it (family members or trauma of some sort) or are facing the possibility of their own mortality, Natalia's motives to why she chose to be a death doula may shed light on what her function in this story is. -So if the disaster doesn't happen at the beginning of the episode, Natalia may show up to wrap up her appearance in this show at the beginning of 6x18.
Marisol, I'm pretty sure, is one if the victims most probably, in the bridge crash, I can't see any reason as to why she would suddenly show up, unless it's another one of Pepa's attempts at matchmaking lol.
If they do manage, by some miracle, to shove all of those things into one episode, it will probably end up being hurried and leave us with the same unsatisfied feeling we all experienced at the end of 3x18. (At least for me and my mutuals.) The train wreck resolution felt very anticlimactic, so I'm hoping 6x18 doesn't suffer the same fate.
As I've said before, this whole season we've been counting down to some bonus, as far as I'm concerned, it's time to put up or shut up, because we can't have so much character developments on all levels with all the characters only to be fated to watch them making the same mistakes all over again.
I do hope that we get a Bobby sending Buck away, while he and Ravi try to get to Eddie. While Buck, worried about Eddie, is making his way to save his older sister Hen and his future brother in law.
It's known from one of the bts pic that Chimney will be hurt badly, so I'm expecting something, emotional and heart-wrenching and frantic maybe, and maybe a little crazy Buck stunt 👀
Tumblr media
I'm hoping, that once Eddie and Buck reunite we'll finally get a hug or better yet, a desperate 'you're a sight for sore eyes, I fucking love you' kiss.
Manifest with me 🙏✨️✨️✨️
Ps. Also manifest Buck's couch catching fire and Buck moving to the Diaz household where his favorite and chosen couch resides. 😌✨️🙏

The ep kicks off with the blimp call, and what I liked about it is that while Buck and Eddie weren’t initially paired up with each other, it quickly became clear that this was done so that at the peak of this emergency, after someone had to already go down with one of the pilots, the person who’ll be left up there with Eddie would be Buck. Battlefield boyfriends ride again!  ~~
Tumblr media
I love how Eddie right away realized that Buck is feeling off about Lucy having been offered the role of interim captain, and how he and Chim try to ease the tension by joking around. It’s a part of Eddie’s love language when it comes to Buck, because we saw him using this strategy in other situations in the past as well, like in 405. Eddie’s also so in tune with Buck, he’s clearly the first to get what Buck is trying to do during the golf course call. They’re not married, but they’re married.
Tumblr media
So it’s a beautiful and rightful extension of that when Buck turns naturally to Eddie with his displeasure over Bobby’s choice of interim captain, and Eddie of course right away guesses the part that Buck was having trouble vocalizing. Get yourself a partner like that. This is true love and intimacy at its finest. ~~
Tumblr media
Holy shit, the absolute mad levels of domesticity in the Buddifer scene! I mean, I’ve said before that 911 somehow keeps making these guys impossibly closer, and this scene is no exception. We’ve seen them having dinners together before. But we’ve not yet seen Eddie and Chris being there while Buck cooks. And I have to say, I love it. Because it’s one thing to invite someone over for a meal you’ve cooked, it’s another to invite them or allow them to be there while you prepare it, that’s inviting them into your mess. Just like in 513, when Buck stepped into Eddie’s mess with him and 518 when Eddie had Buck over to help him clean his mess. And yeah, this time it’s not the emotional mess of a breakdown, it’s the beautiful, daily mess of living, but that in a sense makes it even better? After all, this isn’t Buck letting someone else in on his mess 'coz things are dire and he has to. It’s him choosing to share the behind the scenes of his life with Eddie and Chris, mess and all. This is the most domestic Buddifer scene, when we already had so many amazing domestic scenes with them, and I am this close to proposing to it, because I love it that much! ~~
Tumblr media
If that’s not enough, this ep used meals as a theme for different relationships. We have Hen and Athena who are good friends, but nothing more. No underlying romantic tensions. So they were going to enjoy a meal together outside. When Hen didn’t show up, Athena grabbed some food prepared by others and brought it over. Because they ARE good friends and care about each other, and want to catch up, offering each other support. But they’re not life partners or a family unit. They’re not a part of the “behind the scenes” of each other’s life. At the same time, Madney are having a meal at home. So out of the two non-Buddie pairs, the platonic friends and the romantic couple, Buddie are shown to be more similar to the romantic couple (the one that needs to wake up, own their feelings and get together already. The one that will by the end of this ep). Who would have thunk it? ~~
Tumblr media
Which brings me to the transitions used in this ep. We have the Buddifer scene transitioning into the Madney one, meaning 911 is choosing to show us these two family units one after the other (in fact, the Madney one is specifically about declaring that they’re still a family even when it might appear like they’re not). Then we have the montage at the end of the ep giving us closure for the characters who have been going through changes. TBH, nothing much happened with Eddie and Chris in this ep that would require them to be a part of this montage. And yet, they are there, and specifically, their short scene is a nod at the Buddifer one (it didn’t have to be. For example, since Eddie talked about Shannon in this ep, we could have had him looking at her old pics, yet that’s not the choice 911 made here), and that transitions to Buck in his apartment, making his choice of not getting a new couch (i.e girlfriend). There are CHOICES, my friends. ~~
Tumblr media
Speaking of Madney and Buddie parallels in this ep, can we talk for a second about how Chim told Maddie she didn’t have to keep apologizing, and she agreed they were beyond apologies at this point? Anyone else had flashbacks right away to Buck and Eddie in the infamous kitchen scene in 309? These are both pairs of life partners, where each person is the most significant one in the other’s life emotionally, to the point where they’ll have this kind of exchange, because of how important they are to each other. Are we really supposed to believe only one is destined to be partnered up romantically? Not in this house, good sir. ~~
Tumblr media
One more point regarding the Madney / Buddie parallels, this time from the Buckley siblings perspective. Maddie and Buck had a talk in s5 where they admitted that she’s always running and he’s always clinging. In this ep, Maddie got to say she’s done running. And we know that with 518’s break up, Buck was done clinging to Taylor specifically, but in this ep, he was also done clinging to the idea that he HAD to have a girlfriend to be somehow worthy. And, of course, he understood back then that the clinging was tied to settling. So now we know, with his hesitancy about getting a new couch, he’s done settling, too. Maddie got to declare her breakthrough to her romantic partner who she knows is the right person for her, enabling this progress. I can’t wait until Buck can do the same, when he gets to look his own partner in the eyes and, knowing this is the right person, say he’s done settling… ~~
Speaking of that couch, I love Chris roasting one of his dads yet again (like in 312 and 511 when he’s sassy with Eddie or 414 with Buck), but the second he brought the couch into it, well... Buck was actually right, it did come out of left field, so it was evident that the couch would be metaphorical even before Buddie’s discussion of how it’s tied to Buck’s ex girlfriends. When at the end of the ep, he chooses not to buy a new one, and instead he’s moving the armchair around, that’s the moment when he chooses not to cling or settle anymore. The couch is for two people. The armchair is for one. He’s choosing himself. He’s choosing to be happy in his own skin, even if he’s single. I love that for him. But I couldn’t help noticing that we didn’t simply get him choosing the armchair by sitting down in it, looking comfy and happy, nodding in satisfaction. Nope, he also had to move it around a bit. Something he already had could make him really happy, but it had to be moved to its rightful place first. I couldn’t help thinking that this might be a metaphor for how happy Eddie can make Buck, once he takes his rightful place in Buck’s life, both of them finally recognizing they’re truly each other’s life partners, and when considering the feelings behind that, why. ~~
Tumblr media
Lastly, it’s just a small note, but I wanna mention, once more, what a good dad Eddie is. He doesn’t purposely lose his game against Chris. It can be so tempting for adults to do that, just like it was a very natural instinct for Eddie to first rush in and wanna help Chris with getting dressed in 204. But Eddie gets that in order to feel truly empowered by his accomplishments, Chris has to try and tackle challenges on his own, without being pampered. No wonder Buck is head over heels in love with this man. ~~
Thank you so much for reading and for any and all support! Thank you also for the great gifs to the beautiful @whosoldherout, who’s a true gem. You can find more of my Buddie fics and meta, if you’re interested. Thank you again! xoxox

9-1-1 Season 6 - Constructive Criticisms #12
Madney: Maddie & Chimney
Madney is the “ship” name for Maddie Buckley’s and Chimney Han’s relationship.  It’s a portmanteau or a combination of their first names as it combines the first three letters from Maddie of ‘Mad’ with the last three letters of ‘ney’ from Chimney or Mad + ney = Madney.  They’re both main characters while their daughter Jee-Yun is a recurring character.  Maddie and Chimney were friends first before they entered their romantic relationship towards the end of season 2 and they’ve been together for almost four years.  They broke up after Chimney found Maddie in Boston during season 5 and they remained separated until the beginning of season 6.
Madney met in 2x6 when Chimney installed Maddie’s security system in her new apartment.  They began as friends who spent a lot of time together on “Buff-Fridays” but they didn’t officially start dating until months later.  They experienced several traumas as a couple over the years and the first one involved Maddie’s estranged husband Doug stabbing Chimney in 2x12 and capturing her.  It was the first of many but they stayed together and overcame a lot of other traumas both individually and jointly including Maddie being accused of stalking a 9-1-1 caller, the arrival of Chimney’s half-brother Albert, Chimney’s fear of going home after the lockdown ended in 2020, Maddie’s worry regarding whether she would be a good mother to their daughter, Maddie’s PPD, Chimney leaving to find her and their breakup.
Chimney told Hen that he and Maddie had forgiven each other for all the things they endured which is great but the issue is they still haven’t talked about all the invisible elephants that are standing inside of the rooms in their house.  Issues with money, marriage, their future and most importantly them being afraid the other one is going to leave are still festering and have been for a while.  All of these are red flags that happen in the majority of marriages but they don’t just work themselves out unless the two people involved in a relationship take time to discuss them.
In previous seasons, their storylines had depth and meaning but in season 6, they didn’t and it was very noticeable.  Them deciding to buy a house came out of nowhere when there was an easier solution and the marriage proposal dragged on for way too long.  As individuals, other than Maddie’s encounters with Noah, the foreshadowing of Chimney becoming a captain and the storylines that included their toxic parents, neither one of them had a significant storyline that stood out from the rest of the ensemble cast.  They’re both main cast members which means the opposite should have been true.
The Madney ship and the characters of Maddie and Chimney weren’t given the attention they deserve the same way Bathena and Henren weren’t and it’s ridiculous because Madney’s relationship has always been one of the highlights of the show.  In the past, their relationship was showcased as two people who were good friends who enjoyed spending time together but it eventually grew into something romantic that was filled with undying love.  In season 6, their relationship was overshadowed by distractions, houses, money and toxic parents.
Full Disclosure: IMO, in 6x1, after Jee-Yun said, “Mama leave?”, it was foreshadowed that either Maddie or Chimney is going to leave the relationship and the foreshadowing continued throughout the season with both of them running away and avoiding the difficult discussions they needed to have.  I didn’t post any blogs about it then because I wanted to see if the narrative would change in 6B but it didn’t.  Also, I wanted to see how their actions would play out for the remainder of the season so that I could provide an objective analysis of their relationship.
My twelfth set of “constructive criticisms” regarding the Madney ship and the individual characters included in the Buckley-Han families in season 6 are included below the cut.  Please note criticizing a TV show is NOT a bad thing especially since TV critics have been doing it for decades.  Constructive criticisms are designed to help make something better and they are VERY different from negativity.  A person can offer criticisms about a form of entertainment they spend their time watching and not be negative about it the same way two people can agree to disagree on a topic. Just because one person liked the season, they shouldn’t expect others to feel the way they do because everyone has their own opinions.  Simply put, two people can have different opinions about 9-1-1 and those opinions can COEXIST since they are not mutually exclusive.
If reading criticisms about the TV show 9-1-1 upsets you, then don’t read below the cut.
                  Warning! ⚠️“Constructive Criticisms” Ahead!⚠️
Disclaimer:  Even though time constraints and the presence of an ensemble cast usually dictate how things are presented on-screen, it’s important to note, in the past Madney’s conversations were included in CANON so the narrative could be followed and so that it made sense.  But in season 6 there were HUGE issues with continuity for all the main characters but especially for Madney because they were GLARINGLY OBVIOUS since they weren’t allowed to have important conversations on-screen.
Madney’s Relationship
As mentioned above, Maddie and Chimney have been in a romantic relationship for more than four years, it could have been five but they were friends first and they broke up for a few months after they returned from Boston in 5B.  They began dating in season 2 but when Chimney was on his way to take Maddie out on their first date, her estranged husband Doug stabbed Chimney and abducted her but they stayed together and continued to build a solid foundation for their relationship.
Maddie took a pregnancy test in 3x18, it was positive and their daughter Jee-Yun Buckley-Han was born in 4x9.  They had been living in Chimney’s apartment until Maddie got her own place after they returned from Boston in 5x13 but she moved back into his apartment in 6x1 and they bought a house together at the end of 6x9.
Prior to season 6, Maddie and Chimney had a lot of conversations some of which were difficult including Maddie being accused of stalking a 9-1-1 caller, Chimney telling her he was in love with her, Maddie’s fear of whether she would be a good mother along with the conversation they had while they were in Boston.  But the issue in season 6 was they weren’t allowed to talk to each other on-screen.  They haven’t had an open and honest TWO-WAY conversation about their relationship since 5x12.  She proposed to him in 6x17 but they still didn’t talk about their issues and she did all the talking during the proposal.  When he tried to explain that he was in a different place, she told him to “Stop” and they didn’t discuss either of their fears about getting married.
Instead of talking to each other, they spent the entire season talking to everyone else about their issues and other people talked about them too.
Chimney had a conversation with Eddie and Bobby in 6x1 when he ran away the morning after their one-night stand.
Maddie talked to Josh in 6x1 before she promised Chimney she wasn’t going to leave.
Maddie talked with Josh in 6x15 the morning after the accountant told her and Chimney, they should get married to save money on their income taxes.
Chimney and Hen had several conversations in 6x16 about Chimney proposing which is not unusual since they’re best friends but he didn’t even know if Maddie wanted to get married.
Buck and Hen argued about it in 6x16 because Buck felt like they should have pushed Chimney to propose while Hen suggested they let him figure it out on his own. (This conversation shouldn’t have happened because the proposal wasn’t about either of them.  Possible reasons for their conversation were included in “Constructive Criticisms #11”).
Maddie talked with Buck, who is her brother about the engagement ring in 6x17 and he said something about his conversation with Hen from 6x16 that prompted her to go talk to Hen.
Chimney asked Gina, the insurance representative if he should propose in 6x17 while he was filing the insurance claim.
Maddie went to Hen’s house in 6x17 and invited herself in without a greeting followed by them discussing the proposal among other things.
Money & Marriage
Money and marriage were two huge themes within their relationship throughout season 6.
Maddie mentioned how combining their incomes helped them to be able to afford a nanny in 6x5.
Every house Maddie said they viewed in 6x8 was either not right or out of their price range.
In 6x10, Maddie asked Chimney if he was still bothered about having to borrow the downpayment for their house from her parents.
In 6x15, Maddie insinuated Chimney wasted money on ice cream, she told him in front of the IRS representative that she pays more than 50% of their household expenses and the accountant suggested they get married to save 14K in income taxes.
They couldn’t afford the downpayment on their house BUT CHIMNEY SPENT thousands of dollars on her engagement ring in 6x16.  The prices of the engagement rings he looked at on his phone ranged from $7,000 to $15,000 USD but they had to borrow money from the Buckley parents to purchase their home.  None of this made any narrative sense at all.
In 6B, it was consistently implied that Chimney is frivolous with money when he was never shown to be like that in previous seasons. Chimney’s fictitious salary is more than 100K annually while Maddie’s is closer to 60K, therefore the implications of him mismanaging money didn’t make sense especially since she earns WAY LESS than he does.  Also, the more than 400K she received from Doug’s estate is gone because she said she spent it when she went to Boston in season 5.  So, WTF was the goal here?
What was the show trying to insinuate?  It appears they were attempting to show Chimney doesn’t contribute his fair share to their household expenses which was absolutely ridiculous when prior to season 6, NEITHER OF THEM WERE SHOWN TO BE BAD WITH MONEY AND THEY DIDN'T MISMANAGE THEIR FINANCES. Chimney had his own apartment that he paid for all on his own, way before Maddie moved in and reminder, Buck had to move in with him after he left Abby’s apartment in 2x8.  In season 5, he spent all of his savings chasing Maddie and she spent all of hers too, so what were they trying to accomplish with this asinine storyline/arc for Chimney because he’s not frivolous with his finances?
The proposal
Chimney’s decision to propose was dragged out for far too long and even though he didn’t propose to her because she proposed to him in 6x17 and he said yes, they still didn’t talk about any of the issues surrounding their relationship.  Chimney talked to Hen about his fears in 6x16 and he talked to the insurance representative too in 6x17 but he NEVER TALKED TO MADDIE about them (see all the people he did talk to above).  Maddie talked to Buck and Hen about her fears but she NEVER TALKED TO CHIMNEY.  Therefore, they both have fears that have yet to be addressed.
There were TOO MANY people involved in the proposal that shouldn’t have been, i.e. the entire 118, with Bobby offering to officiate when Chimney tried to explain he and Maddie probably wanted something small.  Buck saying he needed to do a grand gesture, Ravi suggesting Chimney’s idea was kind of lame while Eddie was the only one who told him it was his choice.  Everyone offered their two cents while they were in the firehouse but HEN WAS THE ONLY ONE who kept it real with Chimney when they were in private, even though he didn’t want to hear it.  Before Maddie proposed, Chimney was still wishy washy about it because he wasn’t sure.  Did he say yes?  He did but the foreshadowing and the narrative were clearly telling a different story.
Just like in real life, almost everyone wanted Maddie and Chimney to get engaged because they like to see weddings and people get married but as mentioned earlier, they weren’t TALKING TO EACH OTHER ABOUT THE IMPORTANT THINGS that still plague their relationship. The question is, do they really want to get married or were they both being shown to be in love with “the idea of marriage”?   It’s always been clear that they are in love with each other but being in love and being ready to get married are two different things.
One of the few things season 6 did well was illustrate how MADDIE AND CHIMNEY AREN’T READY TO GET MARRIED.  Once Maddie proposed in 6x17, it was like everything else that led up to it DIDN’T HAPPEN.  Chimney told Hen in 6x16 they forgave each other for the hurt they caused and experienced but it doesn’t erase the palpable fear they have that one of them is going to leave the relationship (see below).
If the narrative continues, it’s unlikely a wedding will happen at the beginning of season 7 for them unless it’s forced because there were still too many things left unsaid between them.  Did they get engaged, YES!  But they still haven’t had an on-screen conversation about the DIFFICULT topics they refuse to discuss and they represent the red flags that were waving inside of their relationship throughout the season.
Here’s evidence to prove a wedding might not happen between them anytime soon.  In 5x13, after they returned to L.A., Chimney told Hen, “All those other times we were apart, it always felt like it was outside forces, ex-husbands, pandemics… this time it feels like the call was coming from inside the house”.  Then he told Hen in 6x16, “The universe is trying to tell me something.  Every time me and Maddie, try to make something real and concrete… it falls away like sand.  Maybe it's time I start paying attention to that”.  He made those comments one year apart so it’s possible they won’t be getting married until they deal with their past.
Madney’s pasts
When Chimney found Maddie in 5x12, they agreed they were going to keep communicating about the difficult things but they stopped in 6A and it continued through the end of 6B.  Even though they had an off-screen conversation before 5x13, while they were driving back to L.A., they’ve rarely been shown talking about anything important.  They talked in 6x1 after Maddie’s apartment flooded, they hooked up but he ran then she talked to Josh and he told her maybe she needed to talk to Chimney instead of waiting for him to talk to her.  They talked about Magda in 6x5 but they didn’t talk about Maddie’s fear at the end of 6x4 after she helped Lourdes and Claribel.  This is important because Maddie will probably always struggle with the fact that she was in a domestic abuse situation but her and Chimney haven’t discussed it on-screen which means they’re afraid to approach the subject.  Chimney told Eddie in 3x4 that he wanted to tell her that he wasn't anything like her psycho deceased husband while she was shown to still clearly be traumatized by it.
In 6x4, they didn’t talk about Chimney being trapped in the car with that drunk driver and they weren’t shown discussing Noah’s arrest in 6x5 since he was the one who stole Maddie’s password.  Also, other than the money Margaret and Phillip lent them, they haven’t been shown discussing their toxic parents even though there are CLEARLY ISSUES especially since in 6x10, Chimney told Buck that the Buckley parents were on their best behavior but he didn’t know why and it was something new for him to worry about.
Couples Therapy
While Maddie and Chimney have been to therapy individually, they’ve never gone to therapy together.  In 3x9, Chimney told the 118, he went to therapy after the stabbing and in that same episode, Maddie was in therapy again after Sue ordered her to go.  She checked herself into a clinic after she tried to commit suicide following 5x3 but Chimney hasn’t been shown going to deal with the paralyzing fear he felt after she left.
They’ve experienced some very traumatic events that might only be resolved in therapy.  The synopsis for 6x1 stated they were going to couples therapy but it NEVER happened.  Maddie made a promise to Chimney that she was there for their family but that’s not the same thing as talking through their issues and facing their shared traumas. They’ve forgiven each other but they still haven’t talked about Chimney’s fear associated with Maddie leaving and they haven’t talked about Maddie’s fear of leaving Jee-Yun for six months.  She talked to Buck about it in 5x15 but she hasn’t been shown talking to Chimney.  He talked with Bobby and Hen in 5x13 about his fear of leaving Jee-Yun with Maddie and he was scared to death when he got home and saw the light in the bathroom on but they haven’t discussed it.
Red Flags
Their relationship was plagued with red flags throughout season 6 including the house they purchased combined with the crippling fear they both have that involves the other one leaving.
The house
There was an abundance of red flags associated with their new home.  First, Josh said it was a “murder house” in 6x9 but after Chimney did some research, he learned the owner ABANDONED it after her husband and three daughters died in a car accident.  They didn’t have the money for a down payment and based on their actions in 6x8, they only bought it so Jee-Yun would have her own bedroom.  They could have moved into a two-bedroom apartment and it would have solved all their problems but for whatever reason, they chose the more difficult option.
They couldn’t afford any of the homes they looked at and they couldn’t afford the down payment on the house they ended up buying so they had to borrow the money from Maddie’s parents.  Maddie told Josh the house wasn’t finished which means even though everyone wanted to see it, no one could stay with them.  The renovations were timely and costly but Chimney was trying to make it work.  Before and after the Buckleys arrived, Chimney planned to give the seat at the head of the dining room table to Phillip. Seriously, WTF was that even supposed to be? (See Chimney’s section for more info on this topic.)
Then Albert showed up in 6x10 with not one but TWO UNANNOUNCED guests, Sang and Albert’s mother without even talking to Chimney before they arrived.  In 6x11, Margaret wanted to buy some plants to decorate the place the same way she bought Buck a couch which wasn’t necessary.  The illusion Buck and Albert had of them being the perfect family during the dry lightning storm in 6x10 was another issue.  In 6x13 Rhonda Fitzsimmons, the coupon forger, barged her way in without being invited and Jee-Yun hid Maddie’s engagement ring in her plastic doll house in 6x16 which is where Maddie found it in 6x17 and then Maddie proposed to Chimney with a big and flashy fake ring.
Reminder, 9-1-1 doesn’t do coincidences and everything that HAPPENS IN CANON, HAPPENS FOR A REASON.  Therefore, the issues associated with their storylines of ABANDONMENT, UNNANOUCNED AND UNIVITIED GUESTS, THE PLASTIC DOLL HOUSE, THE FAKE RING, HOME OWNERSHIP, HEAD OF THE HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY were all highlighted for a reason.  The reason wasn’t revealed, so hopefully it will be in season 7.
Being afraid the other one will leave
It’s clear Chimney is still afraid that Maddie’s going to leave and it’s been foreshadowed several times.  In 4x1, after Eddie and Hen moved out of Buck’s loft, Chimney was too scared to go back home even though the lockdown had been lifted.  In 5x3 after Maddie left, he was terrified something happened to her or someone forced her to leave even though Buck told him sometimes she just leaves.  Then he told Buck he didn’t want to think badly of her.  In 5x18, he thought she wanted to start seeing someone else and in 6x1 he left after they hooked up because he was afraid that she was going to leave him again.  Also, his face wasn’t shown when Jee-Yun said, “Mama leave”, which could mean he’s still afraid of it.
He was the one who suggested they buy the “murder house” in 6x9 even though Maddie was clearly not too excited about it.  He admitted in 6x10 that the renovation was taking its toll on them and that it was mainly spearheaded by him and in 6x16 he told Hen marrying Maddie was what he wanted but he hadn’t talked to her to see how she felt about it.
The conversations he had with Hen in 6x16 were very telling and illustrated how he’s not ready.  He said, “This is not about the money Hen.  It’s a sign!” but she responded, “It’s a ring, an object. You can get another one.”  He shook his head no and replied, “The universe is trying to tell me something.  Every time me and Maddie, try to make something real and concrete… it falls away like sand.  Maybe it's time I start paying attention to that”.
The kicker happened in 6x17 when he asked Gina, the insurance representative if he should propose or not and he pleaded with her for her opinion.  She responded, “I think people look for signs when they’re afraid of making a choice.  Afraid to make the wrong one.”  Chimney responded, “Ouch! Brutal but probably accurate.”  When he asked her if she was married, she replied she’d been divorced twice and he asked if she regretted it, then she responded that she regretted the results not the attempts.  He was still unsure but when he finally went home and Maddie proposed, she didn’t let him finish what he was going to say.  She proposed and he said yes but they didn’t talk about either of their fears.
“Something stinks”
The theme of 6x16 was “something stinks” and every emergency the 118 was dispatched to involved something that was foul and odorous.  The first emergency was the woman with the tonsil stones and the next one was at the dump.  Chimney and Hen spent two hours searching for the engagement ring in that same dump until Athena arrived.  Therefore, could the theme of the episode be alluding to Maddie and Chimney’s relationship since they keep allowing things to pile up without discussing them?
Howard “Chimney” Han
Chimney barely had two solid storylines in season 6 and neither of them were given the attention they deserved.
He was completely under-utilized in 6A and he was treated like a recurring character until 6x9 when he and Hen went to the murder house.  Also, he really didn’t have any important conversations with anyone this season until the latter half of 6B.  He had one with Hen in 6x16 after he lost the engagement ring and he had one with Ravi in 6x14 about Ravi returning to the 118.  The flashback conversations he had with Hen and Karen in 6x6 don’t count because they happened years ago.
Some of the decisions he made were contradictory and out of character.  In 4x6 he said he believed in jinxes and in 6x7 he said the same thing about curses but in 6x9, he not only researched a “murder house”; he bought it.  Therefore it didn’t make any narrative sense for him to be the one to find the house but it was probably set up that way so they could bring in the Buckley parents.
Chimney’s interactions with Sang Han, his biological father were atrocious and were treated like an afterthought especially since Hen told him in 6x10 he needed to tell his father how much he hurt him by not being there and for abandoning him.  He didn’t have the conversation on-screen with Sang and in 6x13, he told Denny he let it go even after Albert’s mother guilt tripped him into believing he was prideful like Sang which is NOT TRUE.
Man of the house
In 6x10, Chimney was WILLINGLY going to give the seat at the head of the table in HIS OWN HOME to Phillip Buckley simply because the Buckley parents gave them the money for the downpayment.  If Phillip would have sat in that chair, it would have been a MISTAKE!  That’s his and Maddie’s home so they shouldn’t be relinquishing authority and the decision making to anyone because they’re the decision makers.  The gesture was nonsensical because Chimney wouldn’t have done that if they borrowed the money from someone else.  If they had borrowed the money from a bank, he wouldn’t have offered the chair at the head of the table to the bank’s CEO. So, WTH was that even supposed to be?
This instance relates back to the money issues that plagued their relationship all season and it’s not fair to his character.  He’s been on the show since season 1 but he’s been sidelined a lot and has been shown to play a background role to Maddie even though she didn’t arrive on the show until season 2.  Also, when she left in 5x3, he was sent off to find her even though he had a FULL SUPPORT SYSTEM IN L.A.  Buck and Albert were there and so were the Lees, therefore he could have stayed and let them help him raise Jee-Yun while Maddie could have gone to a facility in northern California (detailed posts that include this topic linked here and here).
For the entirety of season 6, Chimney was made to look like a guy who was prideful (comment made by Albert’s mother), irresponsible with money (Maddie’s comments about him buying ice cream and her paying more than 50% of their household expenses) along with the lost engagement ring and he was made to seem like a man who couldn’t adequately provide for his family (he couldn’t afford the downpayment but he could buy an engagement ring).  These were assassinations to his character and they weren’t fair, therefore, it begs the questions of why was his character handled in this manner?  Was it done on purpose?  If so, then it’s unclear since he’s a main character.
Captain
Chimney was a great captain in 2x17, 2x18 and 4x14 (he stepped up while Bobby was trapped in the warehouse with Ethan Copeland) when he wasn’t trying to emulate Bobby.  After season 2, he was never shown having any interest in being interim captain or a captain at all again and he’s mentioned he didn’t want it several times.  He said it in 6x1 and he said it again during his performance review in 6x14.
The way Bobby handled telling Chimney he’s a good leader was ridiculous.  First, they should have had the conversation they had at the end of 6x14 in 2x18 when Bobby returned after his suspension but since they didn’t, it should have happened in 6x1.  If Chimney is supposed to be the next captain of the 118, it doesn’t follow the narrative or the foreshadowing that’s been done over the last six seasons. It’s possible Chimney may become a captain at another firehouse instead of the 118. In 6B, it was hinted at when Chimney went to the academy and when he sat in Bobby’s chair in 6x16 that he "could" become the next captain of the 118 but the narrative has always shown Buck as Bobby’s mentee which means if it continues, it’s very likely Buck will be the next captain of the 118 not Chimney (more on this topic in next Monday’s post).  Ravi (mentee) is to Chimney (mentor) who Buck (former mentee) was to Bobby (former mentor) (post regarding this topic linked here).
On the job injury
Chimney being hurt was continuously foreshadowed throughout the season.  He was trapped in the car with that drunk driver in 6x4, in 6x10 he was supposed to be the one on the aerial but Buck went up instead and in 6x18 he got impaled with that piece of metal from the gurney after the bridge collapse.  These were all instances where he was either in danger or could have been seriously injured but like everything else, the finale was rushed and he was on the mend and back at work quickly.  In 6x14 he told Hen, Eddie and Buck that he would be there when they’re all gone but the question is, will he?  Who knows but if they keep foreshadowing his death or him experiencing a permanent injury, it’s possible it could be related to whether he becomes a captain someday.
Maddie Buckley
Maddie also had a limited number of storylines in season 6 and she was treated like a background character for most of the season too.  Aside from Noah trying to frame her in 6x5 when he stole her password because he thought she wouldn’t get in trouble and the coupon forger in 6x13, the rest of her on-screen time was the result of something else that happened, i.e. the proposal and Buck getting struck by lightning.  Chimney found the house and suggested they buy it in 6x9 and he was the one who was going to propose but she found the ring in 6x17.  Other than that, there weren’t too many storylines for her as a main character.  The prank her and Linda played on Josh in 6x9 was unnecessary.
Fear and uncertainty
Maddie’s still unsure of a lot of things and even though she said she was done running in 6x1, her reactions and responses to a lot of situations and emergencies were very LOUD.  In 6x9 she wasn’t comfortable with the house Chimney found but she went along with it because it’s what Chimney wanted.  In 6x10 she admitted she didn’t always have it right before her parents arrived.  She told Athena, Chimney and Bobby in 6x13 that she didn’t like feeling uncomfortable in her own home after the situation with Rhonda Fitzsimmons.  She told Hen in 6x17 that the people at the treatment center didn’t teach them how to reacclimate themselves back in with the people they know.  Furthermore, Maddie was always OUT OF THE ROOM whenever the difficult topics were being discussed.  When Chimney’s argument with his dad during dinner happened along with Buck’s sperm donation conversation took place, she went to check on Jee-Yun instead of staying for the discussion.  There aren’t any coincidences on the show which means these things were intentionally done but the reason was never provided.
Flashbacks of her life with Doug
In 6x4, the call she took from Claribel rattled her and she may have been having flashbacks to her time with Doug.  She was paralyzed with fear which is understandable so it begs the question as to why she and Chimney weren’t shown discussing it.  Also, in 6x13, Rhonda Fitzsimmons barging into their home made her feel unsafe and rightfully so but they didn’t talk about it after everything was over.  She was shown to be “going with the flow” again with regards to the house purchase.  She was unsure about it and it kind of seemed like she was doing it to make Chimney happy the same way she went along with the renovations.  Also, she told Josh at the end of 6x15 that she thought she’d never get married again but she and Chimney never discussed it since they were committed to each other and raising their daughter together.  Prior to the accountant mentioning it, had she ever thought about it?  Viewers don’t know and probably never will because she was barely on-screen in season 6 even though she returned to L.A. after 5x12.
Still absent from 118 gatherings
She wasn’t present with the 118 this season and her interactions with the three people she was allowed to talk to, i.e., Hen, Athena and Bobby all seemed contrived and weird especially since she’s interacted with all of them in the past.  Buck is her brother and Chimney’s now her fiancé but the saga of Eddie and Maddie not talking to each other in CANON continues (detailed post regarding why they haven’t or won’t until something happens linked here). She was absent from Hen’s medical school party in 6x5 but she didn’t have any problems walking into Hen’s house unannounced in 6x17 when she wanted to confront her about the things Buck said Hen mentioned regarding Chimney proposing to her.
Relationship with her parents
It’s unclear where Maddie stands with her parents because in 4x4 she told Buck she wanted her daughter to have a normal family and Buck told her she should have gotten knocked up by a guy who had one of those.  But in 5x12, she told the doctor at the hospital in Boston that she didn’t discuss her medical history with her mother.  The Buckley parents weren’t mentioned in season 4 or 5 after Jee-Yun was born and in 6x10 through 6x11 while they were there, the only real conversation she had with them was about Buck’s care.  Does she want to have a relationship with them or not?  Or maybe she wants to have one with them for Buck’s and Jee-Yun’s sakes which she said in 4x4 but that’s difficult to assess too since no one including her has said anything about it in more than two years.
Jee-Yun Buckley-Han
Jee-Yun is only two years old which means she may not get her own storylines for a while but her holding on to the engagement ring in 6x16 for safekeeping was great.  Hopefully, her character will become a main character soon since she’s the daughter of two first responders.
Madney’s Future
Based on the way season 6 ended for them, it appears a wedding is on the horizon but it’s possible it could be delayed for a while.  Even though the marriage proposal turned out great and it was awesome that Maddie was the one to do it, the season ended and THEY STILL HADN’T TALKED ABOUT THEIR ISSUES which is a problem all on its own.  There were also an abundance of unanswered questions for the Madney ship in season 6 including:
Where does Maddie stand with her parents?
Where does Chimney stand with his father?
How do they really feel about getting married?
Are they going to discuss their differences or just keep going with what everyone else expects or believes they should do?
Will they ever go to couples therapy?
Will they approach the topic of how fearful they both are of losing each other?
Season 6 didn’t do the Madney ship any justice because they deserved so much better than what they got.  A long-drawn-out marriage proposal without them talking about everything else was very LOUD.  They were shown to be two people who didn’t know each other but that’s so far from the truth because they were friends first and they clearly know each other but their relationship wasn’t handled properly for the duration of 6A and 6B.  It could have been better if the show would have allowed them to have their HAPPILY EVER AFTER instead of throwing all the foreshadowing into the mix.
Will the show address their problems in season 7?  Hopefully or otherwise they won’t be doing Madney justice because they deserve a HAPPY ENDING that’s not faked or forced.  How will things happen for them in season 7?  Will they get married early on or will it be delayed until who knows when like everything else was in season 6?  Only time will tell but hopefully, the Madney ship and Maddie, Chimney and Jee-Yun will get the attention they deserve.
These are my criticisms regarding the Madney ship and the individual characters included in the Buckley-Han family and “Constructive Criticisms” #13 will be posted on Monday, August 14, 2023.
I have a total of 15 CANON “Constructive Criticisms” (3 remaining) and my goal is to have all of them posted by Monday, August 28, 2023.  The topics are being posted in a specific order that begins with the overall issues for season 6 so they can be referenced within the posts about individual characters and ships that will follow them.

I’ve seen a lot of posts about Eddie in 6x11 and I also wanna share my take on his absence 🥺
Eddie fought tooth and nail to keep Christopher. Hen called it a “nasty custody battle,” meaning Eddie used up all his time, energy, and resources on the case.
Without Carla (“red tape’s worst nightmare”) Eddie struggled through all the paperwork and “bureaucratic mess” and failed to get the government assistance he needed.
Without Bobby there to nurture a family environment, Eddie didn’t have any support system in place. Captain Righetti forbade Eddie from bringing Christopher to the station and both Chimney and Hen referred to him as “Diaz” showing that their relationship was strictly professional. (Cue Buck’s insistence on using nicknames!)
Financially, Eddie was, without a doubt, at a disadvantage. The salary of a firefighter is lower than that of a petroleum engineer, and the cost of living in LA is much higher than in El Paso.
Here’s what I think could’ve made the custody battle go from bad to worse:
One way we’ve seen Eddie make money is through underground fighting. It wouldn’t be hard to believe that he might’ve joined a fight club to earn money quickly and “blow off steam.” Following a similar storyline to 3x08 where Bobby finds out Eddie’s been fighting, Captain Righetti also finds out. But unlike Bobby who directs him to therapy, Righetti takes disciplinary action, possibly leading the court to believe he’s mentally unfit to parent Christopher.
Now to tie this into Buck’s coma dream:
Everything Buck experiences in his dream is something he has either imagined, envisioned, or experienced before. After waking up from his coma, Buck tells Bobby about his dream. Everyone was different except for Hen. His brother was alive and his parents showered him with love—things Buck has imagined/envisioned before. The others were things he has experienced—Chimney pre-Madney, Maddie’s marriage to Doug, and Bobby’s life during his relapse.
What we, and Buck, have never seen/experienced is Eddie’s life pre-Christopher. Ever since Buck learned in 2x02 that Eddie is a dad, it’s been Eddie AND Chris. A package deal. Eddie Begins 3x15 starts off with Christopher’s birth and really drives home the fact that Chris is Eddie’s life. The Eddie we all know began with Christopher.
Earlier in Buck’s dream, he asks Daniel if coma dreams are possible. Daniel’s response is that he doesn’t know—because Daniel is actually just Buck’s subconscious. Buck doesn’t know the answer, therefore Daniel doesn’t know either.
To me, Eddie’s complete absence in Buck’s dream is due to the fact that Buck cannot imagine Eddie without Christopher. He can’t even begin to fathom the thought of it, so it’s easier to just not think about it.
The first memory to physically manifest itself (Ferris wheel) was that of Buck protecting Christopher during the tsunami. At the back of his mind, he still thinks about Eddie and Chris relatively unprompted.
Buck seeing dream Christopher ask for help finding his dad was Buck’s subconscious trying to fix things. Same with Chimney inviting him to help convince Maddie to leave Doug. Buck really only stops to talk to his parents because that’s not something he can fix. He’s making peace with it now that he’s come to the realization that Bobby is his true parent.
So what happened to dream Eddie? My absolute downer of a take is that Eddie, after eventually having lost hope of ever getting Christopher back, suffered a breakdown like in 5b but this time, he was alone and without anyone to break the door down.
Thanks for reading! 🥺💖
repost since tumblr finally fixed my account 😭

A sequence that shows the literal Buddie pieces on the board: Sleep vs The Controller and The Onesie
First we get:
Tumblr media
And we know that the video game Eddie was playing was one that he, Buck, and Christopher have played together before. It's also the same one that Buck and Christopher were playing that Eddie turned off. Before this scene, we have the conference call of Buck telling the 118 about his big news. We also have Eddie getting off the call after a while, saying that he was going to try to take a nap since Chris would be up in an hour. (and he's sleeping on his couch)
Tumblr media
The very next shot:
Tumblr media
This is also after the conference call where Buck tells Hen he thinks he'll be able to sleep now that he knows the insemination was successful. And after we see Buck sleeping, we get:
Tumblr media
We already saw the onesie in the Buck shot, but they make sure to show up this up close...to rival the controller shot.
Both props are used to show us what part of the future both guys are focused on. Eddie = completing that family; Buck = being a dad/parent. Even though this child won't be his technically (and we've yet to see how things will play out on that front which I'm assuming will happen in 6B especially with the Buckley parents coming back into play plus Denny looking up his bio dad in this episode is no coincidence or that Eddie was the one that Hen spoke to about it first), it will still have him thinking about something similar to what Eddie's thinking: family. These two props are showing what's next in their journey for this season, so it's beyond fitting that they used these two props.
Then the next shot is Madney sleeping:
Tumblr media
(also notice how Maddie's position is similar to Eddie's while Chim's hand is out like Eddie's & Eddie was presumably holding onto the controller like Chim is holding onto the papers; and notice Chim's position is sort of similar to Buck's)
And the prop we get:
Tumblr media
They're attempting to buy the house where Maddie stated it looked like a family had lived there, and Chim thought a family could live there again.
And then:
Tumblr media
There was zero reason to show Karen here because she didn't need to sleep. Maddie being a first responder and her and Chim filling out papers could explain her presence away logistically, but no logistical reason for Karen in this shot. But they did it to show the couples, Hen being the 118 member who couldn't sleep before due to her worry about Denny, just like Chim with his obsession over the house. So they purposely put Karen in here to keep the couples theme going, and the undercurrent of this episode is family. Notice how both of them are on their side and Karen is spooning Hen.
So we have:
Eddie asleep, alone on the couch, on his side, he presumably drops the controller & is snoring; prop: controller; voiceover: "The city rests. A familiar cycle--"
Buck asleep, alone in his bed on his back; prop: onesie; voiceover: "--starts again." (voiceover for onesie: "The rain comes, no less every year now.")
Maddie and Chim asleep, in bed, Maddie on her side facing Chim, Chim on his back & he moves in his sleep for a moment; prop: papers; voiceover: "We wait for the jacarandas to bloom and curse their flowers when they fall."
Hen and Karen asleep, in bed, both on their sides with Karen spooning Hen; prop: none; voiceover: "Knowing that every passing day brings us closer to the return of those winds."
Not only did they make sure to keep the couples going for Henren following Madney but they also made sure to have Chim and Eddie both moving in their sleep, both having something in their hands, both with one hand extended out. And you have at least one person in both couples in the fetal position, one couple even featuring spooning. And they made sure to show us all of this in a sequence.
Eddie didn't have to fall asleep on the couch. He didn't have to have the controller in his hands. He could have been reading when Buck called. He didn't have to mention Christopher. That particular part of the voiceover didn't have to happen then.
All of it is being done for a reason. And seeing what they're showing us plain as day in episodes like this, there is no separation going on. None. The video game/controller confirms it as does the mirroring of the prop shots when it wasn't needed from a logistical stand point since the onesie was already in the shot with Buck. It's also confirmed by them choosing to put the Buck scene right after Eddie's then followed by Madney and then Henren. -> Blocking of a scene is a thing. Directors and editors make choices. It's pure Brenna Malloy/911 brilliance again, y'all.
We already been knew that the pieces on the board are being moved but man is it fun watching it while it happens. Perfect 6A ending. Now it's going to be hell to wait until the spring for 6B lol.
But regardless, it's coming. And by it's, I mean Buddie.

is it cheating if i say 911 + apocalypse 👀
Tumblr media
ngl. I have in fact been thinking about a 911 love and monsters au. which ik isn't the You Know What that u were probably wanting but uh. I have no control over my brain alas
LET ME SET THE SCENE.
love and monsters takes place about 7 years after nuclear missiles sent to destroy a world destroying asteroid rained debris down on earth and mutated all of the insects, reptiles, and amphibians into massive monsters. around 95% of the human population was wiped out from these monsters, and the survivors formed underground colonies where they could hide and survive. the colonies stayed connected via radio (which is one of my fav tropes in apocalypse media btw <3333) the plot of the movie happens because the main character leaves his colony and travels over 80 miles over monster-infested land to get to his girlfriend's colony, but in this au things would be. a little different <3
buck and maddie are separated when things first went to shit. maddie was with doug, and ofc she tried to find buck but wasn't able to in all the chaos. the buckley parents are killed by a monster (god fucking bless) (right in front of buck tho..alas) and a group of strangers pull a shocked + terrified buck into the back of their truck to get the hell outta dodge (this group of strangers later becomes his colony aka found family. u already know who they are <3) buck's colony consists of bobby + athena (haven't decided if they're together yet or not) + michael + kids, chim, and hen + karen + kids (nia is there <3 her family was killed in the initial monster attacks and henren took her in).
meanwhile, maddie ended up in a colony clear on the other side of the country. she escaped from doug (and a giant slug did everyone a favor and sat on him) and found her way to a colony consisting of the call center!! sue, linda, josh, etc!! they took her in and they're fambly ur honor.
at the 118 colony (what I'm calling it for the sake of telling them apart), buck manages to find maddie's colony on the radio and reconnect with her. his bestfriendbrother chim would sometimes hop on to chat and well. madney fall in love with each other over the radio. btw. just by the sound of each other's voices. if u even care.
and ANYWAY the plot happens when buck, desperate to be reunited w his sister, sneaks out of the colony to cross the country to find her colony. despite ykw. the horrors. (and I'm thinking this is kinda s1 buck where he's more goofy and less responsible and so bobby is sooo against him leaving because there's no way he'd be able to survive out there !?!? with horrific beasts trying to kill him every 5 steps !?!?) and chim catches buck sneaking out and they have the whole "please please don't get me in trouble" "I'm going WITH you lol" convo (and this is early s1/s2 chim as well because he feels out of place with the colony where everyone has someone to take care of (partner or kids) and he's also kind of afraid that even if he lives long enough to get to maddie's colony she won't feel the same way etc etc) BUT REGARDLESS. they both set out for maddie's colony and leave bobby a note that basically says "don't be mad xox" (bobby is, in fact, mad). however before they leave they're also caught by ATHENA. who actually decides to go with them because on god SOMEONE has to make sure they don't die in the first 2 miles. (and also she trusts bobby to protect her family while she's gone. btw. if u even care) so the team consists of chim, buck, and athena !! (I wanted to go for the maddie kidnapping arc kinda vibe....except chim is also there...)
ANYWAY. somewhere along the way they need to split up and so buck ends up on his own (but like they all know where they're going and all that so ykw. it's fine) and he. runs into a kid. off on his own in the middle of the fucking apocalypse. the kid (U KNOW) got separated from his dad and is trying to find him, and they were also traveling to a Safe Place in the mountains where it's too cold for most monsters to go but chris doesn't know which way to go and he wants to find his dad first. now buck realistically thinks that said dad is probably dead. I mean cmon. but he doesn't want to tell the kid that so he decides to bring chris with him (there's a certain point where chris and eddie were planning to turn north to the mountains and buck is taking chris to at least that point) and well. he doesn't really know what he's gonna say to the kid once they get there because he really doesn't think chris should be out by himself but he doesn't know how to tell him that his dad is most likely dead. ykw. angst. meanwhile eddie is traveling w a small group (haven't decided who yet) and DESPERATELY trying to find chris. and also, incidentally, heading to the Point Where He'd Turn North because that was the place they'd agreed to meet if they got separated. meanwhile chim and athena are also trying to find buck. everyone tryna find each other out here istg
ANYWAY chris + buck run into eddie's group and well. gay shenanigans ensue. u already know <3 (lots of similar elements to the existing apocalypse au.....because I care them...) and then they find athena and chim and then they find maddie's colony <3 buckley sibling reunion AND madney. double whammy <3 the colony maddie is at isn't very safe because monsters are getting close, and so they were about to leave to go to the Safe Place In The Mountains. buck chim and athena realize they should probably bring their colony there, too. so they head BACK to their colony (maddie and eddie go with them...chris was supposed to go w maddie's colony to the safe place but he snuck to go w his dad instead)
meanwhile back at the 118 colony, monsters have started breaching the underground bunker and so they were forced to leave and go aboveground to find a new place. the two groups run into each other and have a joyful reunion (buck + chim are now verifiable badasses who have survived for weeks on the surface btw <3) and then they all go to the mountain colony together. and scene <3
some notes: eddie has a sketchbook where he's drawing + cataloging every monster he encounters (sorta like. a How To Survive guidebook vibe) (because artist eddie is soo important to me) (it's for chris in case eddie doesn't make it so chris would still have a chance). also chim gets a dog companion <3
ask game
