In order for Derek to have a teenaged son, he also had to have been the father of a toddler at one point.

This means when it's time to roll out to disband a rogue hunter ring, and they get into Derek's newest, badass muscle car with the tinted windows, and Derek dons his sunglasses and says gruffly "They don't know who they're dealing with", that the moment he turns on his car, the Paw Patrol soundtrack immediately blasts from the speakers at full volume.

Or that, once in a while, the pack will hear Derek mindlessly humming a song that's gotten stuck in his head from countless repetitions every single day (because "Again, 'gen, 'gen, Dada! P'ay 'gen!"). And at some point Stiles, being fluent in memes and internet culture, is the only one to recognize the tune and ask "Wait, are you humming Baby Shark?"

And if you think Derek's control was solid before, that's NOTHING compared to the zen master level of composure he has now. When the hunters manage to capture Derek and Stiles and attempt to make Derek turn, they don't realize that, yeah, those sticks with the sonic pinging sound are loud and annoying, but have you ever had to deal with the demonic bat screeches of a 2-year-old for 4 hours that first night after he's not allowed to sleep with his pacifier anymore?

And, sure, being electrocuted loosens a werewolf's grasp on the shift a little bit, but have you ever had to hold back a shift because your child is having a complete meltdown in the middle of a Costco because his sock feels a little funny, and even though you fixed the problem, the ordeal happening at all was traumatic enough for him that it required rolling around on the ground, an additional 7 minutes of screaming, and an attempt to throw eggs out of the cart?

And the "torture" is laughable. Okay, wolfsbane makes you weak and lethargic and makes your skin burn and makes it hard to breathe and makes you throw up black goo, BUT have you ever had a random little girl throw sand in your kid's face, making him cry, and then, after telling her "No! We don't throw sand!", have to deal with an indignant mother yelling in your face because "You do NOT tell my daughter what to do! She is NOT your child and should NOT have to grow up in a world where any man can demand things from her!"?

You want to talk about torture, do you have any idea what 2-Year Sleep Regression is? Do you have any idea what it's like to wake up at 3AM to shrieking and then deal with a cranky toddler that refuses to take a nap, all of this FOR 6 WEEKS STRAIGHT?

Or how about when your 3-year-old has a tantrum because he asked for strawberries and when you give him strawberries you find out he actually meant blueberries but when you get him the blueberries, he has an even bigger tantrum because how DARE you put away the strawberries he didn't want in the first place?

There is a visible moment in which the hunters question whether or not they've made a mistake and accidentally captured two humans.

And after the two of them manage to get out of that mess and back to relative safety, Derek notices a cut on Stiles arm.

Stiles has to bite back a laugh when Derek, without even realizing he's doing it, sticks a Lightning McQueen bandaid on Stiles' cut before kissing his boo-boo better.

Thank you for the ask, friend! (from this post!) These are really helping me think about writing and getting me unstuck! I appreciate it!

I have many WIPs, but the one I am currently focusing (and stuck) on is United, my BNHA Hogwarts AU fic. I recently got a motivation boost from a lovely comment left by @oaken-dick and so I've been revamping the plot for the remaining chapters and working it to be more cohesive, and then writing, hopeful to post the next chapter when I can.

5. what is the next moment you need to write that’s interesting to you?

I would say the very next part that I have to write is Tenya's Ultimate Betrayal. Not to give too much away, but if anyone has read the fic they know that I took Tenya's canon spiral from when his brother is injured and made it worse. I made it so much worse. My poor Tenya, I am not giving him a chance to easily redeem himself...oops. Basically, every time you would think he's Past the Point of No Return, he does something that leads him further and further away from his friends and any shot at redemption.

At this point, no one is safe no matter how long they've been friends or what they've promised in the past. Tenya is working with Shigaraki, and murder is on his mind.

9. what do each of the relevant characters currently want?

oooooh, this is such a good question. This is actually one of my favourite questions to ask myself, and I'm so so so happy to answer. It will make my answer long as there are several relevant characters, but I will try to summarize as best I can and I will only focus on the major characters of the fic for this one:

Izuku - Izuku wants to stop Shigaraki for a couple reasons: 1. He wants his mother, a muggle, to be safe; 2. He wants his friend Tenya to stop heading down the dark path he's on; 3. He does not like the sound of a once-powerful dark wizard coming back to kill people; and 4. he wants to prove to everyone that being a Slytherin does not automatically make someone evil or beyond saving.

Katsuki - He just wants himself and Izuku to be happy together. And for Izuku to be SAFE.

Hitoshi - My poor son just wants some happiness. He has been hit hard at every turn and he's reaching for anything he can to save himself. He would also like to not be heartbroken *looks at Dabi and coughs*

Dabi - Initially, Dabi wanted to rebel against his father. Now, he just wants to find a way to stop Shigaraki and survive the process. He has an added desire to watch out for Tenya, because he's Hitoshi and Shouto's friend. And if he and Hitoshi could figure some stuff out...that would be nice too lol.

Tenya - I don't think Tenya really knows what he actually wants at this point, but I know the fact of the matter is that he's seeking an outlet for his grief and he wants others to hurt the way he is hurting.

Shigaraki - He wants the extermination of muggles for a few reasons. It's not explicitly stated (yet) but uh...his situation was very similar to Hitoshi's once (see fic for details? it's complicated...), and All for One is the wizard who saved him.

Ochaco - Ochaco wants the boy she loves *looks pointedly at Tenya* to stop being an idiot and for things to go back to how they were when everyone was getting along.

All for One - Believes muggles are beneath wizards and witches, and so he wants to get rid of them.

14. what do you like about this WIP?

This was my first ever fanfic, and I've been working on it for a little over three years now(started posting in October 2019). I have a strong attachment to it because I've been working so hard on it for so long.

I really like the Dabi/Shinsou in the fic. Initially, this ship was meant to be more background, with the main focus of Shinsou's character being his escape from the abusive foster home he lives in...but I really liked the way the two students were drawn to each other and the way they interacted when I wrote them, so the ship kind of grew from there.

I also liked playing around with character assignments. When I first told my brother that Izuku was going to be in Slytherin, he nearly jumped out of his seat going "what?! How does that work?!!!!" lol. But I think my reasoning is logical. Izuku has ambition, maybe even more than Katsuki. Slytherin highly values ambition. I also really like drawing out the plotting side to Izuku, which is a bit of what happens with him being in Slytherin. And honestly, the fact that Izuku in the original source material takes the hair from All Might and agrees to be his successor in order to be a hero screams to me "I will do anything to meet my goal". On the other side of it, Katsuki is a Gryffindor. Yes, he has ambition, but he won't do 'by any means necessary'. He actually has his own guidelines for himself (evidenced by the Sports Festival where he is angry and refusing to accept first place because he knows Todoroki didn't give their fight his all and feels that means he hasn't actually earned the first place title). Honour and Bravery are Katsuki's thing. I did a lot of thinking for every character I assigned a house in this fic, so it took a long time to actually plan it all out.

I took liberties with ages and de-aged a lot of characters to have several of them all be students together, which was also fun because it allowed for more interactions between the antagonists and protagonists to happen organically in the fic.

I also really love how Inko in this fic finds her spine far sooner and is not afraid to speak her mind from the get-go. In the very first chapter, she is traumatized along with Izuku and Katsuki. And at that moment, she decides to do what she can to make sure they're safe. This led to a very interesting interaction between her, Aizawa, and All Might when the boys initially get invited to Hogwarts. I based a lot of it on the part in the anime where teachers are going around apologizing to parents and explaining the dormitories and asking permission for students to live on-grounds. She really stood her ground there and I loved how strong she was even as she had tears in her eyes. Inko is a Queen.

3. What person impacted them the most?

If he had to pick anyone, he'd probably say Pheazza. While she was bitterly angry at him when he left the krewe to join the Inquest, she was also the one person the most willing to understand why he might've done that to begin with.

When he did finally leave and bring her daughter Kinna home to her after she'd been kidnapped, it was Pheazza who recognized he was in a terrifying spot, standing on the precipice.

And she gave him the arrowhead her mentor had her make when she was young.

Her words to him that night, "you don't have to fly straight; you only need to fly true," stuck with him the entire time he was moving further from the Inquest and finding himself becoming a leader, within the Pact and then simply as the Commander.

He feels if it hadn't been for her, he may not have tried.

4. Assuming they're a commander, how close were they really to Destiny's Edge? To Trahearne?

Okay so I have some hcs about him and Zojja's past that I'll talk about in a different post if I remember (I know I keep saying this), but for the rest of Destiny's Edge at large, he gets along with them well enough. He and Rytlock have a sort of strange understanding, and he likes Eir.

Logan bothers him. Gets under his ears in a way he can't figure out how to explain to anyone.

Caithe reminds him a lot of his own guildmate Rhoslinn, so he's surprisingly sympathetic towards her. They've had a lot of heart to hearts since they met.

But when it comes to Trahearne, he was someone who surprisingly seemed to get Vezz's unease and hesitation towards a lot of things. The two became close friends, and unlike his quiet conversations with Caithe, he and Trahearne would often have long talks about philosophy, the nature of the world around them, and how one's past determined one's future. He has not stopped blaming himself for his death.

7. Do they have any skills or abilities that their class wouldn't normally have/just go about their class differently in some kind of way?

Vezz actually had the chance to train his necromancy in a very bizarre way. In his early days with the Inquest, he lost his left leg below the knee in a lab explosion, and as he was in shock, he didn't think to yell for help.

He healed as best he could, then used his necromancy to drain the life from some nearby rats, creating a prosthesis out of the leg itself. He had to hone the ability over time, and it did wither quite a bit from its initial state (with bone showing in spots due to the force of the explosion).

That leg was his prosthesis for a pretty long time, and he only stopped using it after Balthazar killed him. The loss of his flow of magic caused the thing to crumble beyond recovery.

He's got a forgemetal prosthetic now, but he's wondering if he can't teach other necromancers the same trick.

8. How willing are they to bend/break the rules for their cause (be it selfless or otherwise)?

He's an asura, and spent several years with the Inquest. Digging up loopholes and finding ways to bend the rules to the breaking point without letting them snap is basically a necessity in both places, and he's gotten very very good at it.

It absolutely pisses off the Arcane Council, since he's not particularly popular (as a former member of the Inquest, he's quite fond of talking about the atrocities behind the curtain, especially after he's distanced himself enough from it), but his position as the Commander not only gives him the leeway to do that, but with the Pact and the guild behind him, he's much harder to hit.

Besides, it's not like it's illegal to talk about the Inquest's horrors, right? He's only doing the right thing!

Beyond that, he's definitely used loopholes for a lot of other things to get around bureaucracy when needed. It's probably a good thing he didn't go to Cantha; they would've hated him.

28. Who is the most delightful character you’ve ever written? Why?

I'm stuck between Cyno from Genshin and Ryuunosuke from DGS. They both have such interesting personalities, stuck between a rich inner world and a very odd way of interacting with the world around them. In general, I enjoy writing characters who are very observant because then I get to make the prose even more descriptive than I already do. So those two were a ton of fun to write (and coincidentally, they're from my longer fics, so they've stuck with me the most too). Scara is also hilarious to write and think about, so that's a different kind of delightful.

31. Write a short love letter to your readers.

To you (yes, you) reading this, thank you for taking time out of your busy day, when you could have been doing anything at all, in all the vastness the online world and the real world offer us these days. Thank you for taking the time to look at humble offerings, which I create for my personal delight and for the hopes that you (yes, you!) might also share in the delight of the creative process. Oh man, I feel awful about this one, because I've been promising @susiecarter I would finish it for...Idk, 3 years? 4 years? now - I'm an awful friend. :D

But, well, I'll just put the my initial word vomit to Susie here to explain the idea behind it:

Bruce would make a great Hephaestus (SUPER smart and misunderstood and thinks he's flawed!) and just picture Clark as Aphrodite (as this symbol of hope and love and beauty and making people believe in themselves and be BETTER)

and there's no way a god like that would be interested in anyone like Bruce - i mean, who would stick a creature of light and beauty in a literal CAVE

so, start like the OG myth and they're already married, either for political reasons or Zeus was just being a dick - but they've never met because Bruce doesn't leave his cave ever since The Tragedy

And Clark doesn't feel this big need to get to know his spouse, why should he, he's beautiful and young and the god of love and hope, he has better things to do

But say Clark either pisses off Zeus or Hera or Ares or maybe he makes a bet (which was something Aphrodite did) that he could get anyone to fall in love with him

And someone (Diana bc she would want to take Clark down a peg) is all, well, what about your husband, and Clark's all pfft easy peasy he hides in his cave all the time, give me a real challenge

And bc the gods are the gods and are capricious as fuck, they're all, okay, well, what if you didn't have your glimmer and you had to make him fall for you posing as a human

Oh and you only have...let's be generous...six months...and Clark is all, i can do it in 3

And they don't mention (of course) that Clark will be STUCK there the entire time, so no sneaking off to be all beautiful and adored and godlike (because Clark is very good at his job, but he's a little out of touch and in danger of becoming a total asshole, so everyone thinks this will teach him humility)

And of course, Bruce is going to be his usual grumpy and pissed off and brilliant self who suffers no fools, so yeah, and also happens to take his marriage vows seriously (because he takes everything seriously)

Death Takes A Holiday (Steve/Bucky)

I should probably just say this one is abandoned by this point, which is a shame, because I got about 19k written before I stalled out. But it was basically my take on the Hades/Persephone story (Bucky as Hades, Steve in the Persephone role, still male) mixed in with a bit of the plot from the film Heaven Can Wait - ie, Steve gets stuck Hades' realm because his thread was accidentally cut a second too soon, so he's not quite dead, not quite alive, and no one can figure out what to do with him, least of all Bucky :D

The Offer (HangMav & HangRoosMav)

This is straight up a sequel to the end of The Bet where Mav invited Hangman to join him and Rooster in bed - only Hangman decides to make Mav (and Rooster) work for it, and they all make another bet that Mav can get Hangman into their bed within 48 hours (essentially) without either touching Hangman OR doing anything seductive (ie, no dirty talk, no dick pics, no suggestive flirting) :D

EXACTLY THAT. nancy and barb had some troubles and maybe they were actually in love but of course barb would wait, and of course nancy would spend all this time searching and later, avenging. they were the best of friends at the end of it all

everything you're talking about with barb's death completely shattering whatever ideas she'd had about living her smalltown indiana life is so brilliant and it makes so much sense. in her mind, it's like whenever she's pretended that she could simply ignore things if she wanted to, it all blew up in her face. with the halloween party and agreeing to pretend like barb's death wasn't affecting her, with jonathan and the hawkins post internship, being told she was wrong for pursuing a hunch or thinking she could make it as a female journalist, and i haven't quite determined if her relationship with steve was the same leap to fitting in, or rather something she genuinely believed she wanted. so of course she lines up those memories and comes to the conclusion, partially out of fear, that she simply can't stop for anyone else, much less her own issues. and i'm sure nancy doesn't want to stop to confront any of that, either

which is why having vecna choose her was so pivotal. vecna not only being a real threat, but also a mental blockade stopping her from dodging her emotions and everything she's tamped down after the years. a taunt, where he snaps his fingers and can make all of her worst fears and memories bubble to the front of her mind and there's nothing she can do to stop it. and i really, really, hope they lead this into s5 where, just like you said, mike or robin finally makes her stop and start to truly heal. !!! nancy has not slept in 52 hours and is mean to people to keep them out so if she loses them it won't hurt as bad exactly exACTLY

and obviously, not to make this about robin, but they do have it set up well for a robin-nancy-heart-to-heart scene. i’m not sure what exactly it is, but i think a part of robin recognizes that nancy's got a pricky, saccharine-spiked-smile defense mechanism? there’s some part of her that subconsciously tapes a little post-it with the word “friend” to nancy, despite the latter being short with robin. and then that scene in the woods !!! nancy catches the little mention of robin caring, and hides her smile by turning away because she knows it’s not the time to become attached to someone else. but it’s already happened, and now she’s got someone else in her corner. and maybe, this season, nancy doesn't have to lose another person and build her walls even higher

YOUR LAST POINT AND YOUR TAGS OH MY GOD. nancy having to face the fact that she can't just live the life she was once planning on having and oh !! this also makes the scene with jonathan finally telling her that he never even applied to emerson even more important. because it's this distinct shift in their relationship, where despite the fact that they've been tied together and fighting side-by-side, jonathan has taken a step back and realized that he simply can't leave his loved ones. meanwhile, part of nancy is still striving, still stuck on that push-forward mentality that wants to leave all of this behind. so she's left, standing in the entryway to her college dorm, and like. she's packed a goddamn gun in her suitcase, because you never know and it's like the party all over again. except this time, nancy's the one pretending.

on another note ! your tags are more accurate than nancy wheeler shooting a gun, and i think they deserve to be made into images. that "nancy's got two hands!" meme except it's "one for [robin/mike] to hold as she has a mental breakdown and one for a dsm". anyways!! i hope this is coherent enough </3 but i love talking about nancy with you !!! i typed out some long paragraph about nancy + fandom misogyny but i couldn't figure out where to put it here so it's just floating in the notes app rn lmao

i really think/hope vecna targeting nancy and forcing her to see her losing her loved ones is going to put her in an impossibly even higher gear. i know the word unhinged is overused on here but i really believe we are going to see unhinged nancy!!!! her family is in danger and she's carrying a guilt that it's her fault for not taking him out all the way so she's going to be SO protective and relentless and but she needs to take a break bc she's not thinking clearly. and i totally agree like i want another mike and nancy scene bc i miss their siblings dynamic BUT i think robin being the one to be there for her just makes so much sense!!! like you said, i can totally see robin picking up on nancy's defense mechanism BC SHE DID THE EXACT SAME THING TO STEVE. so i literally need them to have an emotional heart to heart that isn't about dumb boys but about how scared they are, both in terms of supernatural and the real world. they're 2 people who feel lost, who feel fundamentally different from everyone around them even if it seems like they can fit in. and i think robin is so important to her bc there's no history, no judgment, no doubting. robin ADMIRES nancy so much and they understand each other on such a level in such a short time nancy could see that for all of robin's clumsiness and anxiety she is someone that nancy can lean on too <3333

I guess I'm the only person in the world who doesn't listen to the same songs over and over, so I don't really have that many I could list. But nonetheless, here's 5 songs that have been on my mind for various reasons.

1. Honey by AFTERxCLASS

Not super familiar with this artist outside of this one track, which I think is their most popular, but I love it, it's super catchy. Came up again on shuffle recently and I've been thinking about it a lot because I realized the part where they say "you're bitter as shit" is sung to like the exact same tune as the Danny Elfman Batman theme, I'm pretty sure. I almost want to do an edit lining it up to prove it, but it wouldn't be worth the effort just for that. I mean I had a few other ideas that could work to turn it into a YTP or something, but probably not enough.

2. Super Mario Land With Lyrics by brentalfloss ft. Dave Bulmer

I've been playing a lot of Mario games recently, including Super Mario Land for the first time, and I'm embarrassed to say I've listened to Super Mario Land With Lyrics enough times that it's all I can think of when I hear the world 1 music from that game. I'm not even super into brentalfloss or anything, I only know a handful of their tracks, but the few I know I know really well, just because I've had them in my library for so long and they've come up on shuffle so many times. I could probably recite the lyrics to both this and Ocarina of Time With Lyrics all the way through, maybe without even listening to the songs. I don't even like them that much! I think they're neat, but not enough to know them this well! I NEED HELP!!!

I just really like this song, I often find myself muttering the lyrics of this one out loud. Particularly the whole rap verse with the Final Fantasy line, love that. The way the lyrics flow into each other there makes it a big ear worm for me, even without hearing the music. Just really fun to recite.

5. Icy Tower Theme (NES/2A07) by Zlew

Just got done streaming some Icy Tower a little earlier, and damn I could groove to that kazoo menu music for hours. But I especially like this cover I found on Soundcloud. I think the cover art is like the second image search result for Icy Tower which is how I found it like a year ago and also how I rediscovered it earlier today. Just a really stellar chiptune take on Man of Constant Sorrow imo.

I had a weird emotions experience today that i need to just grumble out of my system but i'm in bed on my phone so I can't do a read more whup sorry.. i'll try not to go on tooooo long

So basically I was tagged in a little Meme on twitter today (a welcome and plesant suprise!!!! People were thinking of me?? People think enough of meme to tag me in a meme??! Unheard of! I do not exsist! What!!?!) It was a really simple fun little sharing thing like "list 3 characters that mean the world to you" nothing that requires a lot of thought really...

Except when you're me and everything is Serious and Impactful and needs Due Consideration e-e

So not only did i like.. agon i z e over who the 3rd character was going to be but even before i posted it i was in Defense Mode

I was ready to GO to defend my choices, in particularly Heis, i felt like i was going to put this out on my twitter and people were going to judge me for it and i was going to have to plead my case why.. lets be honest it was Just Karl I was worried about, deserved a Spot on That List.

I felt people were just wa i t i ng on the wings to be like "reallyyy? Means the WORLD to you?? Hasn't he only been around for half a year At Most? Aren't you just in an obssessive phase and he'll go away for the next thing in a few months? He means the w o r l d to you?? Really???" And just general like.. derision and judgement, usually based on the idea that's it's some kinda foolish clouded choice that A) is like.. some way important and serious I guess and B) is Wrong (????)

And ahhh!! It makes me so angry!!!

Because no one was!!! There was no one waiting in the wings to Get Me!! Of /course/ not!!! Half the people in the tag line ahead of me had him on their too!! Why would it suddenly be Not Okay for /me/ to put him on there?? Under what Fucking Circumstances would that make ANY sense???!

The only thing that happened is i got some likes from my mutuals and regulars and the folks i tagged quoted tweeted their own! Just a small!! Pleasant!! Time!!

But I still felt so fucking nervous and slightly ashamed, like part of being ready to defend myself was going "yeah yeah i know it's weird that he's here.." like this shuffling embarassment that I was letting my enjoyment of a thing "cloud my judgement" or something from what I "actually" cared about or was "actually" meaningful to me

And it sucks so much that i can trace this all back to liter a l l y one event in highschool, where my friend at the time questioned me and chidded me for putting a band i had recently gotten into (gazette, the j-rock group, if you were wondering) in a fairly large chunk (size of the chunk represented level of inspiration) on an "artistic inspiration" board, not even for class, but for the Meme on deviantart... She said all those things to me, about how it didn't count because i had just gotten into it, that it Couldn't be that much of an inspiration to my work, that I was just putting it there because it was a fresh new thing i liked and not Actually inspiration.

And that shit's fucking stuck with me So Bad

(And of course there's more than that, definitely a few other relationships that reinforced that mindset of Always Have A Defense Ready, but THAT is where it started)

I've always had trouble sharing my interests due to fear of judgement/general lack of interest, but that kinda ruined my sense of trusting what the things i like Mean to me, even if they've been around for a while.

Cause even with Gazette, even if they didn't stick around as inspiration in the long run.. fucking!!! They were on that day!! For that period!!! I can think of several ideas i had directly inspired by their music, and several more long term concepts that have stuck with me! And guided me in certain directions that track back to it! So like!! They kinda did stick with me!

Things are and should be allowed to shift and change as slowly or rapidly as they please, not only is it not that serious but also it's stupid to think there's a like.. a Valid or Sacred amount of time you have to spend with a thing before it becomes worthy of Influencing or Inspiring you. Or having some level of profound meaning in your life.

Everything we interact with leaves it's mark on us, whether we know to acknowledge that right away or not.

But I always feel so afraid and ready to fucking Fight now whenever I am asked to share what I love when there is absolu t e l y no reason for it! /I/ know what heisenberg means to me, whether he sticks around or not, I know how Gazette inspired me at the time, and I know a silly little share-along meme on twitter isn't the be-all-end-all of personal character analysis.

But it always fucking feels like it is and I hate that my brain Is This Way. I'm sick of it.

to celebrate The Crimson Moon reaching 30k as of this morning, i thought that i would share the progression of the opening lines of the book, and talk a bit about how the book has grown and changed in the last year! on july 27th it will be exactly a year since i first started writing this and wow i’m not getting emotional you are aha whaaaat

draft one: please oh god don't judge me

ok i'm not going to talk negatively about my past writing because it got me to where i am today but. [marge i am looking away meme] if you can't tell, i wrote this when i was going through the existential crisis phase of uni and just wanted to live in the woods, i say like i would not currently move to the woods in a heartbeat asdklfja

at the time that i wrote this i was really happy with it because the writing was fun and, as a result, easy! at this point i was just writing in my down time from uni, and i didn't know what the plot was or what my plans were for the book as a whole. because this was just something i did in my down time, i think my writing took on more of a conversational, stream-of-consciousness tone, and that's part of what made this draft (or start of a draft, i only got like 12k in i think) so easy to write. but eventually, as the plot started to come together and i started to gain more inspiration from sff writers as a whole, i realized that this book wasn't heading in the direction i wanted it to. it wasn't just something to do in my free time at that point, it had taken on a life of it's own. and thus, draft two began.

draft two: electric boogaloo

ngl these lines still slap and i love them. there are definitely things i would change, but these lines will be in the current draft of the book, albeit not in the first chapter and altered slightly. when i started this draft, i didn't have an outline but i had a very clear, cinematic image of how i wanted this chapter to go. i think having that before i started writing helped a looooot, both in terms of prose and just being able to convey aspects of the setting/character in the first paragraph. as i continued writing this draft though, i realized that some of the character arcs didn't make sense or were getting a bit messy, and that, based on the story i wanted to tell, it didn't make sense to start with Xalia. while there are six main pov characters in this book, Vanna really is the main character and i wanted that to be clear.

draft three: this time it's personal actually good

these are the current first lines of the book, and honestly my favorite so far! starting off with Vanna rather than Xalia definitely gives the book a different feel, and it's one that's more true to the vision i have for it. in my opinion, this opening does a much better job of setting up some of the book's themes, which admittedly i'm still figuring out lol. grief and loss are major components of all the character arcs, and are integral to the plot itself. switching to present tense has also been a LIFE CHANGER for me. it's funny because, on the second stab at this book, i kept slipping into present tense, but forcing myself back to past tense because i thought present tense sounded weird. turns out it only sounded weird because it was surrounded by past tense, and now that i've written 3 chapters in present tense i can solidly say that this is the way the book was meant to be written. it just feels like my book now, and i'm so happy with where it's headed!

i also made an outline for this draft of the book, and while i've already deviated from it somewhat to work out plot holes or increase ~foreshadowing~ in certain scenes, getting all of the events out of my head and onto paper has really allowed me to just write because i know that i have a document to refer back to if i get stuck on where the story is headed. making the outline also really pushed me to think about character backstories, most of which i had previously established, but now they've changed a lot to fit together more cohesively and integrate with the plot more clearly. i've also changed a lot of the character designs, and as a result of changing the appearances and backstories of a lot of the characters, i feel a lot closer to them and the story itself. the characters have well and truly taken on a life of their own, and now i'm kind of just along for the ride, telling their stories and loving every second of it!

ALSO!! the last big change with this draft, which i just implemented literally this morning and am so so sooooo excited about, is having first person referral, present tense mini-chapters/interludes! it gives the book a really unique sound and ties into the plot really nicely i think! i feel like the structure and form of the story are finally tying into the story itself and it's driving me insane a little bit askdfjka

as of right now i'm not ready to reveal who the pov and referral characters are in these chapters, because i'm debating between a couple ways of doing things and if i go one way that would end up being a pretty big spoiler! that being said, i got really hyped up about it earlier today and rambled in the spoilers section of my server so if you do want that sweet sweet spoilers content....join my server! ;)

also. i hope u all know that i almost deleted that first snippet about ten different times but transparency in writing and all that, i really do want to show how much this book has grown and changed! even if it's going to cause me immense psychic damage to type up the image description for this but i digress
